Welcome to the February issue We made it….January is done! Always seen as a miserable month in the year, cold, damp days with very little light, as I am writing this it is grey, miserable and the rain is lashing at my window! It’s nice to be looking forward to Spring and what the year ahead has in store. In this issue we are focussing on The Crescent and what it has to offer. We are keen to promote supporting our local shops as they are key to our local economy. As the saying goes ‘use them or lose them’. After tidying up from Christmas it often makes us think of home improvements we can make. This month we look at the kitchen, how to add value if you are thinking of remodelling your cooking space. I know at home I am nagging at my husband on DIY jobs I think need doing, although so far it seems to be falling on deaf ears! February is the month of love, and of course we are talking about Valentines Day but don’t worry if you’re on your own, it’s just one day of the year and why not spend the evening with other single friends? Order a takeaway and relax whilst thinking how much money you’ve saved not having to buy a present! We also catch up with The Chapmans on the last leg of their world trip and Annette from The Village Midwives talks to us about all things Oxytocin, as she calls it ‘The Hormone of Love’. This month Tim is road testing the Range Rover Sport so make sure you flick to the back of the magazine to see what he thought when he put it through it’s paces. As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is roll on Spring and have a great month!

News Healthwatch Lincolnshire wants to hear your experiences of Health and Housing in Lincolnshire

Healthwatch Lincolnshire is one of 152 local Healthwatch groups set up by the Government as part of health reforms set out in the Health and Social Care Act in 2012. Its job is to ensure that the voice of patients, users and the public is at the heart of NHS and care services. Healthwatch Lincolnshire gathers patient views, represents those views to local NHS organisations and makes sure they are taken account of. Does the property you live in affect your physical or mental health and wellbeing? Healthwatch Lincolnshire is investigating if ‘where people live affects their health’. Health related housing issues may include physical health, mental health or just your general wellbeing.

Does living where you do make you happy and content, or does it generate problems and issues that you then struggle with? Problems can include such things as being unable to keep warm because of inadequate heating or poor insulation; mould in one or more rooms; your home being too big or small for your needs but you are unable to move; you have

nuisance neighbours or feel very isolated because of where you live. Take Part and Have Your Say www. surveymonkey.co.uk/r/JVQP2KL

Beech Lodge Care Home Rated ‘Good’ In All Areas By Care Quality Commission Managers and staff at Beech Lodge Care Home in Holbeach are delighted with their overall ‘Good’ rating following a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The report rated the care home good in all areas, highlighting that staff were kind, caring and compassionate and supported

people’s dignity and independence. “We are very pleased with the report findings”, said Alykhan Kachra, Managing Director of Country Court Care. “The staff team here at Beech Lodge Care Home go the extra mile every day to create a welcoming and homely environment for our residents, this is reflected in the positive comments in the report”. The report found the home to be caring and noted how people had built friendships with the staff. One person commented, “We have a lot of fun with the staff. I feel relaxed.” A family member said, “I’ve never seen him laugh so much

since he’s been here. He didn’t laugh much at home.” The report noted several examples of good person-centred care, especially for people living with advanced dementia. Care staff showed that they had a good understanding of the needs of people living with dementia and family members were very happy with the care their loved ones received. A relative commented “He was a farmer so a perfect setting. If he’s in his chair, they will put him so he can see in the fields. The whole process here is about him, they are so lovely with him.” Beech Lodge Care Home is currently home to 36 residents and offers nursing, residential and dementia care in a homely setting.

Record-number of people helped by local charity First responder charity LIVES recorded its busiest month ever in November, with 1972 people in Lincolnshire being helped by a volunteer responder during the 4 week period. Each day, nearly 66 people needed a responder to help with 999 medical emergencies ranging from falls to serious road traffic collisions, chest pains to cardiac arrest. LIVES has also seen an increase in the number of more serious incidents it attends, with its volunteer doctors, nurses and paramedics bringing the hospital to the roadside, performing lifesaving procedures regardless location, day or night. All LIVES responders are volunteers responding to medical emergencies in their own community. This means they are able to get there fast to deliver that immediate care before handing over to the ambulance service. Nikki Silver, CEO of LIVES, said “We’re incredibly proud

and grateful to our fantastic volunteers who give up so much time to be there for their neighbours in time of greatest need whatever time of day and the weather. We’re on target for a record year and that is amazing that we can help so many people in Lincolnshire but equally puts a greater pressure on our charity to raise more funds to keep our responders on the road.” Each year LIVES has to raise just over £1million from public donations to keep its responders on the road. LIVES is on track for helping 21,000 people in Lincolnshire this year, that equates to around £50 per person helped. If you are able to support LIVES, please go to www.lives.org.uk LIVES announced it’s busiest period as part of Local Charities Day (15th December), a national day set up to help highlight and promote support for local charities, such as LIVES.

Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages

Nick’s Notes

or councillors this time of year tends to be dominated by budget setting, which of course determines the level of council tax that you have to pay. In the last few years there have been some massive changes in the way local government receive their funding from central government. In the past Business rates were collected by the District Councils and handed over to the government, who in return gave some of the money back in the form of a grant, which in itself was part of a very complicated formula that clearly favoured urban areas over rural areas. The government has now agreed to look at a fairer funding formula that is more straightforward which should benefit rural areas in particular that have not received its fair share of funding in the past. Change however is on the way and Lincolnshire County Council, NE Lincolnshire Council and all the District Councils in Lincolnshire have been successful in becoming a pilot area for 100% retention of business rates. This will generate an additional £14m across Lincolnshire and will make us more accountable to local businesses. The detail is still to be worked out but no council will lose out as a result. From 2020/21 business rates retention will be set at 75%. The government has

also given the opportunity for County Councils to increase Council Tax by 3% without the need for a referendum on top of the 2% increase to help fund additional costs for adult social care. It is likely that the County Council will recommend this, meaning an increase in County Council tax by 4.95%. This is largely to cover over £10m of additional adult social care costs, £4.2m of additional costs relating to children’s social care and anticipated pay awards of 2.5%. For the District Council who will no longer rely on the main government support grant from 2020/21. It is likely to recommend an increase its Council Tax by £5 and continue to make savings of around £1m a year through efficiencies in asset management and increased income. Finally on a different note altogether, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are looming, but a great chance to support our local flower industry and the many people locally who work in it. Please continue to support them by buying flowers for your partners and mothers! It is all good for the local economy of South Holland.

Advice

Citizens Advice

Claim compensation if an item or product causes damage

...give free, confidential, impartial and independe nt advice to help you solve your problems

If an item causes damage to your property through no fault of your own, you may have a legal right to claim compensation (also known as claiming ‘damages’). For example, you may be able to claim compensation if your washing machine starts leaking and damages your kitchen floor. If an item or product has given you an injury you’ll have to make a personal injury claim. If you have insurance that covers the problem, you could make a claim on your insurance policy. This could be quicker and easier, but it could mean the amount you pay for your insurance will go up. Work out how much compensation you want You’ll need to work out a fair amount of compensation to ask for. You should consider: •how much money you’ve spent fixing the problems, or how much it will cost to fix •how much time you’ve spent and what your time is worth How to claim compensation It’s a good idea to take photos of any damage caused so you can use them as evidence. You should also make note of dates and times when things went wrong. The action you should take depends on

whether or not you bought the item that caused the damage. If you bought the item that caused the damage You should first try to claim compensation from the company you bought the item from. Call or write to them and explain your situation. What to write or say: “The law says I’m entitled to be paid damages when a faulty item causes damage.” You can include the cost of the faulty item in your claim for damages, but not if you’ve already had a refund or been given a replacement. If you write, include copies of photos or any other proof you have of the damage. It’s a good idea to keep the originals in case you need them later. You can send the letter by registered post so you have proof that it was received. If you didn’t buy the item that caused the damage You have the legal right to get compensation from the manufacturer (ie the company that made the product) if all of the following apply: •you’re claiming for more than £275 •the item that caused the damage was unsafe •the damage wasn’t done to something owned by a business You can’t claim the cost of the faulty item only the cost of the damage and distress. Call or write to them and explain your situation. What to write or say: “The product has damaged my personal

property; therefore I’m legally entitled to damages under the Consumer Protection Act 1987.” If your claim is for less than £275 You can make a claim for ‘negligence’ against either the manufacturer or the company you bought the item from. You may have to prove that they were negligent, but it’s worth calling or writing to them first to explain your situation. What to write or say: “The product has damaged my personal property; therefore I believe I’m legally entitled to damages for negligence.” If you’re still not getting anywhere If you’re not offered compensation or you’re unhappy with the offer, you should: 1.Check if the trader’s a member of a trade association. Look on the trader’s website or ask them if you can’t find this information. Contact the trade association and explain the situation. 2.Ask the trader if they’re a member of an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) scheme - it’s a way of solving disagreements without going to court. If they don’t respond or won’t use an ADR scheme, keep a record of the fact that you asked them (and the date). If you bought the item yourself with a credit card, you can contact the bank (or credit card company) and say you want to make a ‘section 75 claim’. If you used a debit card, say you want to make a ‘chargeback’ claim. If you don’t get anywhere, you can complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service. If you’re still not happy, you’ll have to go to court to get compensation. This can be expensive and take a long time.

Another tax year end looms – what a relief!

s the tax year end looms ever closer, have you done everything you can to maximise the tax reliefs available to you and therefore minimise your future tax liabilities. The tax year ends on 5 April so around a month to go, there is still time to take action… Everyone has the Personal Savings Allowance (PSA) allowing interest received up to the value of the Personal Savings Allowance to be received tax free, but the amount you get depends on your marginal rate of tax. Has this been utilised? Spouses should ensure that they each use

their Personal Savings Allowance to the full, where possible. If you own a company have you made full use of your £5,000 dividend allowance, and could a spouse also make use of their allowance? Making pension contributions, especially if you are a higher or additional rate tax payer are a useful tax saving tool too. For people in receipt of Child Benefit, the High Income Child Benefit Charge will apply if either they or their live-in partner has an individual income in excess of £50,000. The payment of pension contributions is

deducted in calculating your annual income for Child Benefit purposes so not only would you receive higher rate tax relief but the payment of pension contributions could also maintain entitlement to receive Child Benefit, a double saving! While the above suggestions may assist in reducing tax liabilities, taxpayers should always take professional advice in order to ensure that there are no unforeseen consequences of their actions. To find out more about these or other tax planning ideas please contact Duncan & Toplis for a free consultation.

The Priory School

Author, Joseph Delaney, visited the school as part of his UK tour. Sam Buckley, from Bookmark, organised this fantastic opportunity for the children in Y5 and Y6. Joseph Delaney spent an hour with the children in which he spoke about his early life, his career and how he became a writer. During the workshop, he read extracts from his series of books called ‘Spooks’. In an inspiring and detailed talk, Joseph Delaney described how he developed and created his characters and he also spoke about how he might write the ending of the story first. Following the workshop, children were able to purchase a signed copy of his book from his new series ‘Arena 13’. School bought copies for the new school library too. As part of schools ‘Reading for Pleasure’ drive, the children were given the opportunity to add more skills to their writing toolkit. This has been

Boston College

We have already achieved so much in this academic year and I am pleased to share two stories with you. Students at The Priory School have been working with young artists ‘Mhythm’ to create content for a festival next year in April 2018. EMERGE is a Workshop to create a festival for the community to allow them to be more culturally engaged. SPIRIT 2012 have funded the project with The Mighty Creatives and students are preparing to bring the National festival to Spalding. We had our first ever student only pantomime at the Priory this year. Maisie McNeill took the role of a particularly sassy Cinderella and Ben Fenwick-French played both The Godfather and the Prince in a last minute cast change due to illness. Every student that chose to participate had something to say in the piece leaving parents and teachers speechless and proud of how much they had achieved. There were lots of laughs and the sense of support from the rest of the school was amazing. Thank you to staff and students for all their hard work.

Ofsted has recognised Boston College’s high standards of provision, performance and quality of teaching during their recent inspection. The inspection team confirmed the College’s “Good” status, making it one of the best performing providers of education in the area. The report concluded that the College, with its Spalding and Boston campuses, has built upon previous inspection performance with aspects of provision described as “life-changing”. There was excellent feedback regarding the College’s Apprenticeship provision, with Ofsted

The PTFA ran a very successful Christmas fete with stalls, a raffle and Santa in attendance to begin the countdown to Christmas. Year 5 visited Burghley House to celebrate a Tudor Christmas whilst Reception children went in to town to entertain with Christmas songs. They also went with Kindergarten pupils and some of the choir to sing at Georgian Court. The Infant productions,’ Wriggly Nativity’ and ‘Lights, Camel, Action’ went very well and were enjoyed by the School, parents and friends, whilst the older children went to the pantomime at the South Holland Centre. We enjoyed a delicious turkey lunch and there

stating “A substantially higher proportion of Apprentices achieve their qualifications than in other providers.” Ofsted praised the College’s strong links with local employers which ensure that students have access to high quality work experience placements and real world projects, whatever their field of study. The inspection results were backed up by the College’s continued success of students progressing into employment and on to higher levels of study. The inspectors made particular reference to the high quality careers service, saying, “learners have access to high quality careers, information, advice and guidance.” Principal and CEO, Jo Maher confirmed “The College is in a strong position looking to the future, with ambitious plans for the further development of its high quality qualifications, including A-levels and technical education. Investment is planned for new facilities with a particular focus on STEM, university level courses and Apprenticeships, particularly at the Spalding Campus, which will allow us to continue to build on this excellent result.”

were the usual Christmas parties with games and Father Christmas for the younger children. The Juniors organised a Games Afternoon with a number of interesting competitions and fun activities for the Infants and each other ( and staff proved pretty good at throwing ‘snowballs ‘ into the mouth of painted snowmen models too!) Term ended with a packed congregation enjoying the traditional Carol Concert at the Methodist Church with poems, songs and readings performed by the whole school. We now look forward to a busy spring term, lighter evenings with lots of sport and new extra curricular activities.

Follow Your Dreams

Nigel, Louise and Kian Chapman are close to the end of their family gap period. The Spalding family put their work and school lives on hold to do volunteer work in the UK last summer before heading abroad in September. After time in America, Japan, New Zealand and Australia, the Chapmans are now in south-east Asia. Nigel tells Simply of their time in Oz:

blankets and coolboxes. It helps when the temperature is about 30 degrees Celsius - and we’re told that was a cooler Christmas Day! Of course, Australia is well known for being a country fond of a barbecue. And, brilliantly, there are barbecue units installed at lots of public spaces, free to use. Isn’t that a great way to encourage people to come together in the fresh air? It was a fantastic atmosphere at City Beach and the festive period was all the better for us as my daughter, Tia, was

y the time you read this Christmas and New Year will be a distant memory for us all. However, the experience of Christmas Day 2017 will stay with us for a very long time. We spent the majority of it on City Beach in Perth with dozens of other families who headed for the seaside armed with gazebos, beach tents, picnic

able to join us for a fortnight in between her university studies. The four of us and Katy - one of Louise’s best friends, who emigrated to Australia from Stickney near Boston four years ago - loved being able to swim in the Indian Ocean on Christmas Day. A little less chilly for us than those who brave the sea on the North Norfolk coast each December 25! The day, which had started with a budget present exchange around the tree at Katy’s, ended perfectly watching the sun dip ‘into’ the sea on the horizon (another similarity with Hunstanton!) It will also go down as the day I tried kangaroo meat for the first

time as we enjoyed our barbie with hundreds of other people at the seaside. I did feel a tinge of uneasiness about tucking into a lump of ‘Skippy’, since we’d had a few nice encounters with the lovable marsupials. We first spotted them on a golf course in Anglesea, during our campervan trip along the Great Ocean Road, west of Melbourne. Just a few days later we got to cuddle a baby roo while we stayed with an Australian family we had met in Japan. Harry had been rescued from his mother’s pouch as she lay dead on the roadside after being hit by a vehicle. With the support and approval of a kangaroo

sanctuary, relatives of our hosts were allowed to care for Harry at their home for a few months. He spent much of the day snuggled up in a blanket which replicated his mum’s pouch. So cute. Tia and Kian got to cuddle a koala at a sanctuary and we’ve all marvelled at the beautiful birds and other wildlife which are a normal part of everyday life, even in the city. We were lucky enough to get to spend seven weeks in Australia, a mammoth country where a four-hour flight only takes you from central south coast to west coast. Although not a cricket fan, I took the opportunity to see England take

on Australia in the Third Test of the Ashes series. Fortunately, that first day of play in Perth was one of the few the Poms played really well during the entire series! We had a fabulous time in Oz, another memorable step on this incredible adventure which we don’t want to end. As I write, there’s much more still to come yet though, including Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. alentine’s Day – love it or loathe it…but there’s no feeling quite like that surge of excitement you get when you find out you have a secret admirer! That feeling? That’s Oxytocin. The Hormone of Love. It really is something special and in basic terms, it rules our life! That moment when your eyes meet across a room and you get that warm and tingly feeling? Oxytocin. When you look at someone and realise you like them a little bit more than friends? Oxytocin. Falling in Love? Oxytocin. That mind-blowing Orgasm? You guessed it! It starts labour, it births your placenta and is integral to breastfeeding. You could say that Oxytocin is responsible for life on earth – without it, there would be no fancying another person enough to have sex and make a baby, never mind birth and growing a tiny human with your milk. It really is incredible stuff. So, what exactly is it? Oxytocin is a neurotransmitter, which is just a big fancy word for something that makes other things possible. It allows our body to feel and do a variety of things. The latest research tells us that babies and children release oxytocin when physically close to their parents; it slows their heart rate and calms them down. It’s an antidote to hunger and scientists are looking at how to use that to aid weight loss! It improves social interaction, nurtures protective instincts, induces sleep and fosters generosity to name but a few. It certainly does seem to be the key to a happy life! So why isn’t everyone constantly walking around on Cloud 9?

Well, the problem is, Oxytocin doesn’t always get produced when you want it to. Adrenaline is released by your body when you are in ‘fight or flight’ mode and stops your body making Oxytocin. Now, adrenaline is a very useful thing if you are running away from a dinosaur, or fighting for your life but unfortunately, it’s also released when we’re over-tired, over worked and stressed out. In our modern, device driven lives this is a common problem and at any one time, a good proportion of the population is fuelled by adrenaline with a side of caffeine. It certainly is a theme around VM HQ from time to time! The answer, I believe, lies in Hugging. Hugging someone for 30 seconds or longer actually stops adrenaline being produced and produces Oxytocin. You switch from ‘fight or flight’ to ‘rest and digest’. If you are lucky enough to have someone in your life that gives excellent hugs (and I do…you know who you are BC!) then take advantage at every opportunity. Reduction in fatigue and depression as well as improved heart health is something we could all do with! Hugging also makes us feel connected and wanted. To stand still for 30 seconds in this crazy world is a luxury and you never know…a hug, a little Oxytocin and who knows where it might lead this Valentines Day?!

Love,

The Village Midwives Xx

Teens, Social Media and Smartphone Addiction So what happens when you take a teen’s phone away for 7 days? Withdrawal symptoms similar to a drug addict. Panic attacks, anxiety, anger, crying, tantrums, screaming, rolling eyes, lies, pouts, disbelief. Parents of teens have it rough these days thanks to a new cocktail: smartphones laced with social media apps. The mix is so potent it can take over your teen’s life and so dangerous it can literally open the door to stalkers.

A

pps like Snapchat, facebook, twitter, instagram are actually designed to be addicting. It’s called brain hacking, and developers are hired to study the brain and the neurological triggers that keep us coming back for more. The problem for parents today is that the apps sprout up so fast it’s hard to keep up with new ones as quickly as they are available for download. Most apps do not come with any age limits, warning labels or ratings that parents can easily screen. Have you checked the children? If you have a teenager you might need to do a check up, there is a social media crisis happening right in front of your screens. There are definitely social media highs and lows influencing circles of friends the past few years as more and more apps appear. One of my parent friends commented; “At age 12, she wanted to join Snapchat, and I resisted for about a year. Finally giving in when she was 13 with the understanding it would only be used with her friends, we joined. Snapchat, once coined for teen sexting in 2012, is now one of the most popular social media networks with all ages hooked.” It soon became clear as time went on I actually knew nothing about teens and social media. A friend recommended I read American Girls: Social Media and the Secret

Lives of Teenagers by Nancy Jo Sales, it really was an eye-opener and the stuff of nightmares to be honest. This is a side you will not be exposed to as a parent no matter how much you know about social media, if you do one thing, try to broaden your knowledge as much as possible.” Thanks to Snapchat and other apps, teens don’t think they need to hang out in person anymore. They don’t talk on the phone either. EVERYTHING happens in private and disappearing messages or live videos. Even when friends are together in the same room or sitting in the back seat riding home from school, there’s a mobile device stillness in the air. It’s Snapchat silence, scrolling, staring, and selfies. Minimal conversation except a few “Did you see that?” “OMG, can you believe she is with him?” And what’s a streak you might ask? I wasn’t aware until researching this article but a Snapchat streak is the number of days in a row that you and another person have mutually sent and opened at least one Snapchat. While they are ~fun~ and all, Snapchat streaks can strain any friendship or relationship. Is it all bad? Of course it’s not all bad. Our grandparents and parents would have let us out for hours on end not knowing where we were or what we were doing. You may get more of an insight into what your children

Top 10 reasons a teenager “could not live” without their phone 1. Friends would be mad 2. Losing streaks (more on this below) 3. FOMO (Fear of missing out) 4. That’s where she hangs out with friends 5. Streaming or catch up on TV 6. “Not fair” 7. No other way to talk to friends 8. Youtube 9. The’yd rather lose their voice calling phone app than Snapchat 10. Boredom

are doing looking at posts from them and their friends. Knowledge is power. So what can you do? In all honesty it is difficult to avoid smart phones and social media but look at yourself, is your phone continually in your hand? Lead by example. Arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible and try to set some rules that everyone is happy to agree to in terms of when phones are appropriate and when they should be kept out of the way.

Health & Beauty

The Power of Positivity Positive thinking can be defined as an optimistic or bright, mental and emotional approach to life. A positive person is more likely to anticipate happiness, health and success, and believe they can overcome obstacles or difficulties in their life. Some say, we are as happy as we choose to be. Whilst many believe adopting a positive mindset is not always an easy choice, it is really one of the most important things you can do to improve your life.

I

t is important to become aware of how our thoughts, feelings, perceptions and desires have a direct impact on our real life outcomes. You may notice how your thoughts effect your decisions, reactions and responses to what is happening in your life and continue to shape your future. It is therefore important to pay close attention to these and how you can best contribute to creating a positive mindset to shape your future.

5 Steps to Positive Thinking: 1. Tell yourself you can change: Believe that you are in control of your thoughts therefore have the power to change your life. Understand the relationship between change and personal growth. Inspire yourself to want to change by reading positive quotes and affirmations. 2. Stop comparing: Search for happiness within, rather than analysing what is going on around you. Ignore what other people say or think about you. Stop worrying what others are up to, or questioning the successes in their lives. We are all living our own journeys. Focus on yourself first, and once you find happiness you naturally won’t worry about what’s going on the outside. 3. Refuel and re-energize: Whilst being tired can lead to physical exhaustion, it can also cause mental fatigue and drain the energy you need to control your thoughts and

think positively. High stress levels and lack of nutrients can effect your nervous system and cloud your judgment. You have the ability to think clearer when you are rested so notice when you need a break, or take part in activities that relax and re-energize you. 4. Identify both the positive and negative: Be aware of your negative thoughts, but know that you have the ability to choose positive thoughts. Be aware of why particular thoughts may exist, and your intention and desire to change them. Understand the

benefits of choosing positive thoughts over negative thoughts. 5. Seek Support: Seek support from people around you who are likely to influence and guide you positively. You may choose to reach out to friends, family or a professional. You’ll be surprised at the amount of help that is around you if you ask for it. (Macdonald, Katie 2014) Taking steps to identify and control your thought patterns can provide you with the tools and foundation you need to transform your life.

Essential Oils: Peppermint Peppermint is cultivated in Europe, Asia and North America due to it needing lots of rainfall. It is a hugely versatile oil in that it can be ingested, inhaled and applied to various areas of the body - peppermint foot lotion is perhaps the most well known application of this oil. Did you know it’s also amazing at helping get rid of headaches? Apply to the temples, above the ears and the back of the neck.

Also by adding one drop to your drinking water you’ll add great flavour and enhance the health benefits of your drink. If you want to find out more about the powerful benefits and ways to use essential oils then visit www.essential-oils.guru. Information is shared for educational purposes only. You are advised to consult your doctor before acting on any content from this article, especially if you are

The cosy cottage built in 1882 sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms (king, double & bunk) plus we have a cot for a baby. We welcome well behaved dogs and have tried to supply everything you will need for babies and pets - travel cot, high chair, baby monitor, dog crate, dog bowls etc. On sunny days the south facing enclosed garden is a great place to relax with table and chairs for 6 as well as a BBQ. All prices include a full clean before and after your visit as well as linen and towels - you will just need your bikini and beach towels!

The Local Area Heacham became popular as a seaside resort with the Victorians due to the opening of the railway between King’s Lynn and Hunstanton in the early 1860s. North Beach has an amusement arcade, a cafe and a fish bar. There are also beach huts available for hire. Both beaches have public toilet facilities. South Beach has its own cafe, which serves meals throughout the year and sells beach goods. The beaches at Heacham are situated on the east banks of The Wash; this means it is one of the few beaches in eastern England where the sun sets over the sea instead of over the land. Many say Heacham village is the largest village in the UK and has all the facilities you would need on your doorstep – Tesco Local, McColls, Indian restaurant, Fish and Chip shop, cycle hire, 3 pubs and the Coasthopper bus route stops just 30 seconds from the front door if you do not wish to travel by car to see all the sights of the coast.

Business Focus

Devonports Kitchens & Bathrooms

E

veryone agrees that the kitchen is the heart of any home and that you can’t beat a relaxing long soak in a luxurious bath to unwind at the end of a hard and tiring working day. Nobody knows that better than Stephen and Sarah Devonport who turned a longterm dream into a reality when they set up their own Devonports kitchen and bathroom design and installation business in Deeping St James. “It all began over 14 years ago with a desire to provide people with beautiful bathrooms and kitchens married up with expert design, advice and customer service,” said Sarah. They worked out of a home office and van in the early days of the business but were so driven with the dream of one day having their own showroom, that it was only a matter of time before the couple realised their ambition.

We are not driven by a team of sales staff, we have no targets or limits to reach or achieve, only the ones that we set ourselves to make our customers’ experiences enjoyable and personal. “We enjoyed many years of continued growth and success and our dream finally became a reality in 2009 when Devonports Kitchens & Bathrooms was born,” said Sarah. “Our initial showroom started out at 45 Bridge Street, Deeping St James and we now occupy the neighbouring two units which has allowed us to expand our existing showroom with further kitchen and bathroom displays.” The Devonports’ kitchens, along with its fitted bathroom furniture, are manufactured in Birmingham by Mereway Limited, which has more than 30 years of continued growth and success. They have three ranges within their kitchen portfolio and expanding into the showroom next door has given the Devonports the opportunity to display even more options. The new kitchen settings have been specifically designed to showcase different door styles and colours and different styles

of worktop. “We have included different ideas for islands that incorporate seating at breakfast bar level height and table height to give numerous options and ideas when planning a kitchen,” said Sarah. “Our existing showroom houses even more kitchen settings with laminate, Granite, Quartz and Corian worktops, all in an array of colours and shapes to show the beauty that can be created from all materials. “Just a change of worktop in your kitchen can often breathe new life and vitality into a room that perhaps felt tired before.” “At Devonports we strive to offer that something extra to the kitchen and bathroom buying experience. “We are not driven by a team of sales staff, we have no targets or limits to reach or achieve, only the ones that we set ourselves

to make our customers’ experiences enjoyable and personal. “We listen, which we believe is quite possibly the most important part of our communication with you, and we offer practical and knowledge-based advice. “We do not take it lightly that we are welcomed into people’s homes and so we always treat them with the utmost respect, keeping our working environment as clean and tidy as possible at all times.” Devonports has its own team of in-house kitchen and bathroom fitters, and uses the services of the same tilers, electricians and plasterers that it has for many years. “Whether you are looking to change your kitchen worktops, replace your bath with a shower or build a brand new extension to incorporate a new kitchen we can take care of it all,” said Sarah.

Feel the Love St Valentine’s Day – the celebration of love and affection - has

been marked on February 14 for centuries in one form or another

T

oday it’s a multi-million pound, global business with millions of cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts exchanged between couples, admirers, family and friends, in countries all over the world. . In celebrating love and romance we send 25 million cards and spend a massive £1.3bn on gifts in the UK alone! But what stands it out as the most romantic of the year? One myth associated with St Valentine is that he was

imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry, and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer and legend has it, that before his execution wrote ‘from your Valentine’ as a farewell to her. Others claim the celebration stems from the Roman’s religious Lupercalia festival, held in mid-February to avert

If you’re looking to avoid the cliche of roses, chocolates and cards, you could always choose an alternative way to mark it , like one of the following ¤ In the original selfless spirit of the Valentine’s story, why not do some charity or community work - this will cost nothing and leave you glowing with the feel-good factor. ¤ Donate the money you would’ve spent on overpriced roses and chocolates, to a charity dear to your loved one’s heart, in their name

¤ Plant or donate a rose bush to a school, public garden or old people’s home to spread some Valentine’s cheer. ¤ Or why not return to the original practices and write your betrothed a love letter and have it delivered? Chocolates are soon eaten, while flowers die but an old-fashioned declaration of love will last forever.

evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility. Its association with romantic love grew during the middle ages, when Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the poem Parlement of Foules, to honour the first anniversary of the engagement of Richard II to Anne of Bohemia. Moving forward The Young Man’s Valentine Writer was issued by a British publisher in 1797; it contained numerous sentimental verses for the young

man unable to compose his own. By this time printers had already begun producing a small number of cards with verses, while a reduction in postal rates in the following century made it easier to mail cards too, and in turn made it possible to exchange them anonymously. In the 19th century paper Valentines became so popular, they were assembled in factories, while fancier versions were made with real lace and ribbons.

Fun facts about Valentine’s Day ¤ Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day in the late 1800s ¤ In medieval times, girls ate bizarre foods on Valentine’s Day to make them dream of their future husband.

¤ The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife. ¤ About 3 percent of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their cats and dogs.

National Pizza Day

February 9th is National Pizza Day. Now here is a day to celebrate. Pizza is a traditional Italian dish consisting of a yeasted flatbread typically topped with tomato sauce and cheese and baked in an oven. It can also be topped with additional vegetables, meats, and condiments. The term pizza was first recorded in the 10th century, in a Latin manuscript from the Southern Italy town of Gaeta in Lazio, on the border with Campania.[1] Modern pizza was invented in Naples, and the dish and its variants have since become popular and common in many areas of the world. In 2009, upon Italy’s request, Neapolitan pizza was registered with the European Union as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed dish. Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (True Neapolitan Pizza Association), a non-profit organization founded in 1984 with headquarters in Naples, aims to “promote and protect... the true Neapolitan pizza”. Pizza is one of the most popular foods in the world and common fast food item in Europe and North America. Many independent or chain restaurants, cafes, and fast food outlets offer pizza. Restaurants or chains specializing in pizza are pizzerias. Pizza delivery is common in some parts of the world.

Real Bread Week The annual celebration of supporting your local, independent Real Bread bakery and baking your own returns from 24 February to 4 March 2018! Launched by the Real Bread Campaign in 2009*, this is the annual, international celebration of Real Bread and people who make it. Each year, the Campaign encourges bakeries and baking schools in its supporter network around the world to organise hold classes, feasts and other events and activities. Meanwhile, everyone else is encouraged to get along to a local, independent Real Bread bakery and support a business that helps to create more jobs per loaf at the heart of your local community and to keep your high street alive. Doughy digits One of the two main aims of the week has always been to encourage more people to bake their own Real Bread. We’re particularly keen to see more children learning to bake it, whether at home, in a bakery, baking school or in the classroom. Not only is this great fun, but it’s a way helping them to avoid all of the artificial additives that turn up in industrial loaves. It can also be a way of steering them towards healthier food - you’d be amazed at the number of children who ‘don’t like wholemeal’ but love it when it was lovingly made by their own mitts.

n e h c Kit Makeover

Home & Property

No matter the state of the housing market, kitchen remodelling remains a good idea. The modernisation of a kitchen will certainly add value to your home and almost every buyer will be attracted to a kitchen that’s updated and move-in ready. Even if you’re planning on staying in your home for a while, few things can reinvigorate your home like a brand new kitchen.

K

itchens are the hardest-working rooms in most homes, and the wear and tear that comes with years of use can leave them looking drab. A remodelling project that makes over your kitchen from floor to ceiling can do more than just improve the aesthetics - it can also be a great way to adapt the room for better functionality to the changing needs of your family. If you’ve put off dreams of a new kitchen because you think it’s unaffordable, you might want to reconsider the changes you can make with your own two hands (and maybe those of some family and friends). When you have the right tools on hand, do-ityourself kitchen projects are more accessible than you might think. By visiting a nearby DIY store to pick up the necessary tools, you can see twice the savings - in addition to the DIY cost savings, you’ll avoid the expenses associated with buying the tools outright. Here are some essential parts of the project and the tools you’ll need to get going:

32 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Floors: There are lots of stylish and functional options for flooring, but the type of saw you’ll need for cutting things down to size will depend on what material you choose. For tile, you’ll need a wet saw, but a cut-off saw for wood and laminate. A table saw can also be helpful for wood flooring. Cabinets: Now more than ever before, homeowners have great options for easy-toinstall cabinetry that don’t require a team of professionals. Make sure that you’ve got the right drill, drill bits, nails, screws, anchors, levels and supports on hand before you get started - that way you’ll be able to work without interruption. Worktops: Again, the tools you need will vary, depending on what material you’re using. If you need to cut a material like laminate to size, a jigsaw will be a convenient tool. Sanders and drills are two more items you’ll want to have nearby. Walls: Whether you’re hanging drywall or simply painting, a ladder will be an essential

tool. If your kitchen has particularly high ceilings or hard-to-reach spots, renting a ladder to fit the task is a good idea.

Appliances: Don’t forget that appliances are sometimes the finishing touches to your kitchen. Think about built in large appliances to create a uniform look and also the image of more space. Small appliances should co-ordinate and try to limit how many you have on display as to not clutter your workspace. A beautiful kitchen will quickly become a focal point in your home, both for your family and for potential buyers. By taking the project into your own hands, you can save a significant amount of money, giving you even better return on your investment. That said, if you are anything like my husband and I, DIY is not our strong point and therefore we tend to use the rule ‘We are saving ourselves time, money and stress by getting the professionals in’. Not only will a professional company be able to advise you on the best gadgets and options for your budget they will be able to draw plans for you so you know exactly what you will be getting for your money. It is always recommended to approach several companies when undertaking any project for advice and quotes to ensure you get exactly what you are looking for as this will possibly be one of the biggest expenditures you make for the home.

Business Focus

S & J Windows & Conservatories S & J Windows are a long established, family run business based in Market Deeping

T

hey pride themselves on their high levels of service, offering windows and doors, composite doors, conservatories, fascias, soffits, guttering and rubberised flat roofs. They are also FENSA registered for your peace of mind. FENSA stands for the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme. Following Government encouragement, FENSA has been set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and other industry bodies in response to Building Regulations for double glazing companies in England and Wales. When replacing windows, doors and roof lights in dwellings in England and Wales, homeowners must comply with current thermal performance and Building Regulation standards and ensure they get a certificate from a Competent Person scheme such as FENSA or Local Authority Building Control. FENSA enables companies that install replacement windows and doors to self-certify compliance under these Building Regulations without the need for a separate assessment from Building Control.

All of S & J’s products are ‘A rated’ so it reduces your heating bills as well as your carbon footprint! If you are considering a change from old windows you will also find that the time you spend on maintenance dramatically decreases! All jobs come with a ten year insurance backed guarantee for your peace of mind. No job is too big or too small and S & J are as happy replacing windows at a huge commercial unit as they are changing a single window at a home. If you are thinking about having some work done then the best place to start is by making the call to discuss

your requirements. S & J offer free surveys and estimates – they are more than happy to come to your home, measure up and give you the benefit of their years of experience to make recommendations to ensure you achieve outstanding results. They have their own, fully qualified fitters so you can be assured of a quality installation. The whole process from start to finish takes very little time – the usual turnaround time can be around four weeks. Finance options available for 2018. Range Rover Sport PROS ‘N’ CONS à Powerful à Spacious à Comfortable à Composed à Expensive

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS (HSE Dynamic)

N

ow, here’s a question that you might not know the answer to but will almost certainly have an opinion on. Is the Range Rover Sport one of the most influential cars of the modern era? A decade or so ago it seemed like all the celebrities were arriving to events in a Range Rover Sport, and since then the SUV market has exploded. Now nearly everybody wants one. Furthermore, almost every manufacturer is now making them. The Sport is not really a full-blown Range Rover. It’s cheaper for a start, and comes with five seats, but it does offer the option of seven. That said, the additional chairs are tiny and aren’t appropriate for fitting kids’ car seats. This is a lower, smaller ‘Rangie’, designed to appeal to a slightly less affluent, but still successful, crowd. And the focus has moved from out-and-out luxury to one that is more about power and pure on-road use. Of course, it’s a Range Rover, so it is well equipped, and the interior is of a high quality. The Windsor leather seats are impeccable - but the Sport is quite different to the full ‘Range Rover’. There are three diesels, two petrols, and even a new hybrid powertrain to

choose from - and all are tuned primarily for clout. Only the entry level TDV6 feels a little lacking, but equally I couldn’t recommend the powerful eight-cylinder petrol engine on offer - unless you own a small oil producing nation. This will really eat away at your cash reserves. Being designed for on-road action, rather than the full-blown Range Rover’s off-road capability, the Sport comes with optional air suspension. This keeps it comfortable and composed, even when cornering hard. The issue with driving it fast is more the size than the capability of the car. Britain’s most enjoyable roads are just a bit too small to be throwing a two-tonne SUV around, however good it might be. The Range Rover Sport is a status symbol, a luxury cruiser, and an enjoyable car to drive hard. But it’s expensive to buy and run - especially with its more commanding engines. And it’s not certain that the new hybrid unit can deliver on the claimed figures. Nevertheless, those who want one won’t be put off by such trivial matters.
