Speak to us about pre-paid Funeral Plans

Welcome to the February issue We made it….January is done! Always seen as a miserable month in the year, cold, damp days with very little light it’s now nice to be looking forward to Spring and what the year ahead has in store. In this issue we are focussing on looking after your feet – they literally carry us everywhere and very often we neglect the care for them. So if you fancy a pedi-pamper check out our guide on footcare. After tidying up from Christmas it often makes us think of home improvements we can make. This month we look at the kitchen, how to add value and the luxury touches you can add in if you are thinking of remodelling your cooking space. I know at home I am nagging at my husband on DIY jobs I think need doing, although so far it seems to be falling on deaf ears! February is the month of love, but don’t panic as we have come up with a list of gift ideas, not all that will break the bank but suggestions that will show our loved one that you care. Don’t worry if you’re on your own, it’s just one day of the year and why not spend the evening with other single friends? Order a takeaway and relax whilst thinking how much money you’ve saved not having to buy a present! As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is to have a great month!

Space 4U - Spalding Listening and Counselling Centre Mental health problems are a common human experience. Most people know someone who has experienced a mental health problem. It can happen to anyone, at any time and it’s likely that, when you find a combination of self-caretreatment and support that works for you, you will get better. Experiencing a mental health problem is often upsetting and frightening, particularly at first, but help is available. Space 4U is a professional counselling service offered by the Spalding Covenant Churches and is based at Broad Street Methodist Church in Spalding. It is open to all from 13 years old upwards, particularly those who could otherwise not access counselling. Counselling gives you a chance to look at

whatever problems or issues are bothering you. There are many reasons why people come for counselling: • because they are having problems with relationships • feel constantly unhappy or anxious • have had a sudden crisis such as somebody dying or losing their job • it may be less clear - a sense that they are often sad, or that life has no purpose. • they may feel everything is spiralling out of control Counselling is confidential, what you say remains private. The cost is agreed according to your ability to pay and is on a donation basis

to help with the cost of running the Centre. No one will judge, advise or criticise you. They will help you find out how you really think or feel about your situation, and how you proceed in a way which works for you. All our counsellors are members of the Spalding British Association for Counselling and Listening Psychotherapy or an equivalent body. This and means they follow their Ethical Framework Counselling and are subject to the Complaint’s procedure. Centre If you would like to know more please ring the centre on 07982 467720 and leave a message with your name, phone number and times it would be convenient to call you back.

Homeless Support Life-changing support will be offered to the most vulnerable and entrenched rough sleepers across Lincolnshire – thanks to a successful county-wide bid for Government funds. The four-year initiative has been given the green light and will see service providers tasked with achieving specific outcomes. These include: • Enabling rough sleepers to become drug and alcohol free • Sustain their own accommodation • Address health and mental health needs • Access education, training and employment A group of councils and agencies from across the county teamed up to bid for Social Impact Bond funding (SIB) totalling around £1.3 Million. This is one of only 8 projects nationally to receive this funding. Michelle Howard, Chairman of the Lincolnshire Homelessness Strategy Group, said: “We are delighted that our bid for funding has been successful and can now focus

on helping some of the most at-risk rough sleepers in the county. “There are a number of rough sleepers in the region who have become entrenched in that lifestyle and need urgent support to get their lives back on track. “We are confident that the SIB funds will result in an effective outcome-focused approach to service delivery which will make a real and positive difference in our communities.” Led by homelessness charity P3, a designated team of specialists, including a drug worker and mental health practitioner will provide intensive support to help 120 of the region’s most vulnerable rough sleepers across the county. They will aim to support rough sleepers off the street, into accommodation, help provide support services for drugs and mental health, with the aim of getting individuals into employment. The scheme is based on similar initiatives in America, which have proved effective at rehabilitating vulnerable rough sleepers.

Street Drinking A new scheme aimed at cracking down on street drinking and other anti-social behaviours in Spalding town centre has been launched. A Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) has been set up by South Holland District Council and this week signs promoting the initiative are going up within the designated area. The order has been introduced to improve the quality of life of those living, working and visiting the area which covers from St Thomas’s Road north to West Elloe Avenue and from the railway station east to Commercial Road. The following activities are offences within the PSPO: • Failure to comply with an officer’s request to stop drinking alcohol in a public space • Spitting saliva or any other product on to the ground • Dropping litter • Urinating or defecating Malcolm Chandler, deputy leader of South Holland District Council, said: “Whilst it is pleasing to hear that reported incidents of antisocial behaviour are reducing in Spalding, we accept there are still incidents occurring and there remains a public perception of street drinking, which we want to change. “The PSPO is a new piece of government legislation to help authorities address community concerns and make public spaces more welcome to the majority of people.” “It is important that incidents of antisocial behaviour are reported to the Council’s Communities team on 01775 761161 or to the police via 101 so that issues can be monitored.”

“We are committed to supporting safe communities across South Holland and are confident that the PSPO will continue to reduce street drinking and other nuisance behaviours.” Inspector Jo Reeves, community policing inspector for South Holland, said: “Lincolnshire Police are supporting SHDC with the PSPO to further the considerable good work which has taken place over the last few years to reduce street drinking to the low levels we currently experience. “We will continue to provide a visible presence in reported hotspot locations to reduce antisocial behaviour and improve the locality for all who use it.” The PSPO replaces the previous Designated Public Place Order in the town centre, which resulted in a decrease in the number of reported street drinking incidents since 2014. The new law does not allow for a complete ban on drinking alcohol in a public place, the offence is failing to comply with an officer’s request to stop drinking within a PSPO area. A map of the PSPO area can be viewed at www.sholland.gov.uk

Lincolnshire Police to raise funds for LIVES On the 3rd January 2017, Lincolnshire Police began raising funds for Lincolnshire based charity, LIVES, by cycling the distance between Lands End and John O’Groats on an exercise bike. A number of volunteers will took part to complete the challenge, which was based in their headquarters in Nettleham. Funds raised from this initiative will help keep LIVES volunteer responders on the road day and night, in all conditions, every day of the year. LIVES responders see an average of 55 patients per day, with a wide range of medial emergencies such as breathing difficulties, RTC’s and cardiac arrests. Deputy Chief Constable Gary Knighton said, “Lincolnshire Police is making a concerted effort to create an environment which encourages and promotes the health, resilience and happiness of our staff and officers. In January 2017 we will be having a challenge month around highlighting physical health and some volunteers will be cycling the distance of Lands End to John O’Groats on exercise bikes. That’s over 800 miles! We will also be raising funds for a Lincolnshire charity that has been there for the people of Lincolnshire in their time of most need -LIVES. Every year they need to raise more than £1 million from public donations to keep their army of volunteers trained and equipped to be able to respond to any medical emergency. They have saved thousands of lives in the communities of Lincolnshire and with the help of some of the funds we hope to raise they will go on to save thousands more.”

Happy Breathers group hours increased A community clinic and support group for people with the respiratory condition COPDis going from strength to strength. The group, which meets weekly in Spalding, has now adopted the name of Happy Breathers and extended sessions by an additional hour to 1.30pm to 4.30pm. More than a dozen people are regularly attending the group, which is facilitated by Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS). The sessions are run on an informal, drop-in basis with the usual format seeing gentle, appropriate exercise on offer during

parts of the session for those who wish to take part and a different activity, talk or demonstration each week. Refreshments, chatting and access to respiratory professionals are also part of the offer. The clinic launched at the Ivo Day Centre, Albion Street, Spalding, in August. It is designed to recognise that people are often the experts on their own situation and condition and therefore those who attend have a large say in what it includes. Sessions are attended by Lincolnshire

The clinic also offers an opportunity to find out about and share information on other services available in the local area. GENERAL

Nick Worth, The Deputy Leader of South Holland District Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages

Nick’s Notes

ebruary is a time for budget decisions at both County and District Councils. Both Councils, along with the majority of local councils across the country have agreed to a four year funding deal with central government, with confirmed minimum funding through to 2019/20. While it is good to know what you are getting as a minimum, the bad news is that this government funding is reducing rapidly. As far as the County Council is concerned their revenue support funding grant is reducing from £70m in 2016/17 to £20m in 2019/20. This eye watering drop in grant funding and the ever increasing costs of adult social care nationally are putting a massive strain on the County Council’s budget. Therefore the need to crease the adult care precept by 2% is almost guaranteed, meaning the likelihood that there will be an increase in council tax from the County Council of 3.95% to make it more resilient to the pressures caused by reduced funding. The District Council will as a result of the above, lose some of its New Homes Bonus that has now been top sliced by government to go towards the costs of adult social care, meaning the District Council will have a reduction of over £500k over the next four years. The District Council has been aiming to become free of reliance on government funding for a few years now and indeed is budgeting for no government grant as from 2020, but with ability to retain 100% of business rates, and is working on additional revenue schemes, investment, growth, commercialisation and digitalisation such as online payments, as well as general efficiencies

to ensure it continues to provide the services you need in the future. On the sometimes difficult subject of libraries, if we go back a few years, there were 47 libraries across the County of Lincolnshire. Under our new way of working we now have 51 libraries, most open for longer hours than previously, 36 of which are run by local communities and volunteers and becoming genuine hubs for those local communities to meet and enjoy what is on offer. The latest to move is in Holbeach, where the existing library is moving from Church Street to the newly refurbished Co-op in Fleet Street, which will be opening on Monday February 9th. This new facility will be open Monday to Friday 9am – 5.30pm with volunteers covering hours between 10am and 4pm and on Saturday mornings. There will be a self service machine available when not staffed. It is a good opportunity to thank those volunteers for their sterling work and I know they are very excited about the move and new opportunities the new facility will bring. The old library will, subject to final business plans, be taken on by the Children’s Centre currently based at the County Primary School, thereby releasing space for more classrooms at that school as it continues to expand as part of the University Academy Holbeach. On a very local note, after popular requests, my village hall in Holbeach St Marks has gained grant funding to set up a small, ‘essentials’ village shop which we hope will be up and running at some point during this month. We are currently on the search for more volunteers to help our core group, so let me know if you are interested in helping out. Nick

Advice

Holiday pay

Citizens Advice

- what you’re entitled to If you work, you’ll be entitled to paid holiday. It doesn’t matter what type of work you do - for example full-time, part-time, agency or casual work. The only situation where you won’t be entitled to paid holiday is if you’re selfemployed (you run your own business). You can choose when you take your holiday, although your employer might make you take it at certain times, eg on bank holidays. How much holiday you’re entitled to Your statutory holiday entitlement depends on how many days you work a week. Your employer might give you more, but it’s up to them. If you work irregular days or hours, or you’re in the first year of your job, your entitlement might be trickier to calculate. You can use the holiday entitlement calculator on GOV.UK to help you. Days you work a week

Days’ holiday you’re entitled to a year

1 2 3 4 5 days or more

5.6 11.2 16.8 22.4 28

When you won’t be entitled to statutory holiday You won’t be entitled to statutory paid holiday if you’re: • self-employed • in the armed forces, police or civil protection services (eg fire brigade, coastguard etc) - although your employer should still give you holiday pay (called ‘contractual holiday’)

Sometimes an employer will try to get around paying holiday pay by telling you that you’re self-employed, when actually you’re not. This is common for casual workers. It’s important to know your employment status. Check your employment status You can check if you are a ‘worker’, an ‘employee’ or ‘self-employed’ on GOV.UK - if it seems like you’re more of a worker or an employee, then you could be entitled to holiday pay. You should raise this with your employer. How much pay you should get You’ll be paid the same rate while you’re on holiday as you’re normally paid in your job. For example if you get paid £280 a week, you’ll still be paid £280 when you take a week off. If your pay or your hours of work vary from week to week, the amount you’ll get will be based on the mean average amount you earned in the past 12 weeks. Agency and casual workers You might be told that you’ll get extra pay on top of your hourly rate, instead of being given paid holiday leave. This is known as ‘rolled-up’ holiday pay. The idea is that you store up the extra pay and use it when you want to take time off work. Your payslips must show the amounts separately. If they don’t, you should raise this issue with your employer.. If you have a problem with holiday pay It’s generally best to try to resolve an issue with your employer directly (if you can). If you can’t, you may have to make a claim to an employment tribunal. If you’re making a claim for unpaid holiday pay, you must do so within 3 months. Other types of claims have different time limits. Step 1: speak to your employer

...give free, confidential, impartial and independe nt advice to help you solve your problems

You could try having an informal chat with your employer - you might be able to sort the issue out by talking. Explain to them that you understand your entitlement to paid holiday. Step 2: raise a grievance Check if your employer has a formal grievance procedure you can use. Even if they haven’t, you can still raise a grievance - for example by writing a letter. Explain why you think you’re entitled to holiday pay, and why you think you haven’t been paid enough. Include copies of any evidence. Step 3: contact ACAS If your grievance doesn’t get the result you want, you can take your employer to a tribunal. You’ll have to notify ACAS first. ACAS is an organisation that provides independent support to help sort out employment disputes. They’ll see if your employer will agree to a process called ‘early conciliation’ - a way to resolve disputes without going to a tribunal. The quickest way to start is to fill in the early conciliation form on the ACAS website. Or you can call the ACAS early conciliation team on 0300 123 1122. Step 4: take your employer to a tribunal Your last resort is to take your employer to an employment tribunal - think carefully before you go ahead, as it could be expensive and stressful. Before you do this, it’s important to get advice from an employment specialist about whether your case is likely to be successful.

Valentines

Don’t be Stuck for

I

Valentine’s ideas!

s shopping for the perfect Valentine’s Day present giving you a headache? Or perhaps you’ve not even had chance to give it thought and now you’re in an online shopping frenzy trying to get something delivered on time? If you and your partner are bored of the sameold same-old when it comes to presents, here are some alternative gift ideas to inspire you.

Chocolate Bouquet The art of flower-giving is something that blokes rarely get right. But today, there’s a floral alternative which could help you score some serious boyfriend/husband points. Chocolate bouquets not only look the part (just like a bunch of flowers) but they also taste the part too. It’s a win-win situation and we love retailers such as Blossoming Gifts or The Unique Gift Store, so check them out.

Handmade Chocolates It’s not just girls who love chocolate. If your man has a sweet tooth, don’t just gift him any old choc box from the supermarket (that simply won’t do). Show him how much you care by making your own sweet treats by hand. Need some guidance? Both Nigella and Lorraine Pascale offer scrummy recipes online and you will find plenty of decorating ideas on Pinterest or online recipe websites.

Retro Sweets Hamper We all know that most men are like big kids. If your man gets excited at the sight of a Drumstick Lolly or a Refresher Bar, there’s simply no hiding his retro style (or his age). A retro sweet hamper (buy online or build your own) could be a great way to his heart.

Upcycled Jewellery Personalised Rubik’s Cube Gift Another great gift you can make yourself; print your favourite photos (your first holiday, your engagement party or your wedding) and cut them to size to fit the pieces of a Rubik’s Cube puzzle. A great challenge with a nice ending once he completes it.

Beard Care Kit Beards have become a pretty big deal in recent years. If your man has a beard, he’s probably very careful to groom it and tidy it every day. After all, don’t we judge a man’s worth by the way he cares for his beard? Get your man a beard care kit complete with trimming scissors, beard comb, beard serum and facial scrub.

Recycling, upcycling, and just about any kind of ‘cycling’ is all the rage right now. The world has gone mad for turning trash into treasures. If your Valentine is an eco-warrior, gift her with a thoughtful upcycled jewellery creation. Maybe it’s a necklace made out of bottle tops, perhaps it’s a pair of earrings crafted from scrap metals, or a bangle fashioned from the circumference of an old china mug; as long as it’s made from recycled materials, it’s a winner. Shop our full range of jewellery boxes (recycled of course) for the finishing touch.

Knitted Scarf Nothing says “I love you” better than hours and hours of laborious work and

Hot Sauce Gift Set What’s the easiest way to tell your crush that he’s hot? A hot sauce gift set to blow his mind (and his taste buds) could be the answer. A hot sauce gift set is a fun and cheeky gift for a long term partner or a new love interest. Whoever the recipient, don’t forget to label with “You’re hot!” on the gift tag. 14 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

sleepless nights of needle turning and thread looping. Give the high street a miss this year and knit your husband/boyfriend a one-of-akind, completely unique, can’t-buy-anywhere gift which will earn you some well-deserved points.

Home Made Love Tokens If you don’t want to spend money, get crafty and create the perfect love tokens which mean something only to the two of you. There are many generic love tokens available in gift shops – make your own for something much more meaningful. We have a huge range of stationery boxes ideal for storing your tokens. Just don’t forget a cute ribbon and a gift tag.

52 Reasons Why I Love You If you go out with a gambling man, take a deck of cards and turn it into a small book of compliments and love notes. Add binder rings to keep the deck of cards together and use each card to display a reason why you love him. All you need is a hole-punch, binder rings, paper, a pen and some glue.

Romantic Kindle A kindle is a great gift, especially if your loved one is a dedicated bookworm. If they prefer high-brow entertainment, don’t insult their intelligence with something tacky or covered in love hearts this year. Get them a romantic Kindle and customise it with all the great romantic classics.

And finally….Cards Against Humanity Not a very conventional present for Valentine’s Day, we know. But it is the best-selling game in the country. If you’re anti-Valentine’s, forget booking a romantic meal for two; instead invite your couple friends over for a night in with plenty of beer and a very inappropriate card game.

AN INTRODUCTORY FLIGHT, for as little as £39 per person, enables you to have 20 minutes in the air on a local excursion in a light aircraft, to sit back and enjoy the view!

The Crescent

Shop local, shop independent

hop local has stood the traders of one particular area of Spalding in good stead for more than half a century. The motto was used by shopkeepers in The Crescent, Vine Street and Francis Street to help promote themselves almost 60 years ago, and it is these values that are serving today’s traders just as well. “It was back in the 1960s, when a group of shopkeepers from these three streets got together to form the Crescent Traders’ Association,” members of the current association explained.

Below: Richard Body MP for Spalding, Roy Revill from Revills, and Jim Inkley from Inkleys Menswear, taken in Spalding Corn Exchange during the Exhibition.

“They agreed to promote the shops and make people aware of the great shopping experience to be had in this part of Spalding. Their first big event was a Crescent Traders’ Exhibition, in the Corn Exchange, now the South Holland Centre. “The four-day exhibition was a fantastic success and demonstrated just what a group of shopkeepers could do when they all worked together.” The pioneering event was organised by Roy Revill, of Revills, and Jim Inkley, of Inkley’s Menswear, supported by others.

“The motto was used by shopkeepers in The Crescent, Vine Street and Francis Street to help promote themselves almost 60 years ago, and it is these values that are serving today’s traders just as well.”

The Crescent Left and below: The leaflet used to promote the exhibition staff in the shops will be pleased to advise and serve you.” All these years later these values remain the same for the business in The Crescent and nearby Vine Street and Francis Street. “The membership of the Crescent Traders’ Association has grown over the years and now stands at 40, with every business in The Crescent, Vine Street and Francis Street being a member,” the association said in a statement. “We are self-funding and all events and marketing are paid for by our members. “Please remember to shop local, shop independent, shop Spalding.”

An original programme from the event which survives today, was priced at 6d, and has a competition entry form on the back for shoppers to win a £5 voucher – a generous prize back in the 1960s. Inside the leaflet details the names of 16 exhibitors including three who are still trading today - Revills, Inkleys Menswear and

Get Crafty

this Winter With the winter weather here for the next couple of months, here are some crafting ideas for your family to keep the children entertained indoors at the weekends!

Blow painting You will need $ Paper $ Straws $ Runny paint Make up some different coloured runny paint and put a couple of drops of the same colour onto the paper. Using the straw, blow the paint in all directions until it won’t go any further.

By turning the paper round, the paint can be blown more easily in different directions. Repeat using different colours to get a variety of effects. It’s really good to use primary colours as it demonstrates nicely how colours combine to make different colours (eg red and yellow join to form orange). This is a very simple way of painting, and great fun, although children do need to be reminded to blow and not suck!

Family Life

Sand Clay Handprint Keepsakes

You will need 2 cups sand 1 1/2 cups plain flour 1 cup warm water 1 1/4 cups salt

Mix together the sand, flour and salt in a large bowl and slowly add the warm water, mixing as you go with a large spoon. This is a dough recipe and as with all doughs, the measurements of dry ingredients can really make a difference to the stickiness/dryness of the finished dough, so add the water carefully and just balance it out if it feels a little too sticky by adding some more flour or sand. Once it is all combined, take it out of the bowl and

begin to knead it on a lightly floured surface. It will take less than a minute to come together into a soft and pliable ball very similar in feel and consistency to play dough or salt dough. Proceed to roll, cut and air or oven dry the sand clay. This volume can be split into four pieces and then rolled one by one, ideally only parchment paper on a baking tray, into a circular shape about 2 cm thick. Once the dough discs were rolled into circles, each child pushes their hand into the centre of their piece, and either help to push each finger down firmly, one by one, using another hand on top. Put them straight into the oven at 120c and

leave them to dry out in there for around 4 hours. The sand dough will dry hard at differing times depending on your oven and, importantly, the thickness of the dough discs. It’s important that they are not too thick or else it takes too long for them to dry hard and they can remain a little doughy in the middle. If you find they are hard on the top but not underneath, take them out and gently turn them over, then put them back into the oven for another hour or two to harden the underside. The finished look of these look just like fresh handprints into damp sand at the beach, captured beautifully as keepsakes to either display or give away. Footprints would look fantastic too!

No-cook play dough recipe You will need: • 2 cups plain flour • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1/2 cup salt • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar • Up to 1.5 cups boiling water (adding in increments until it feels just right) • food colouring (optional) • few drops glycerine (optional adds more shine!)

Method: • Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl • Add food colouring to the boiling water then into the dry ingredients colour optional) • Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough • Add the glycerine (optional)

• Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s the perfect consistency! • If it remains a little sticky then add a touch more flour until just right www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 19

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

It’s all about

family... family..

W

e plan for ourselves, for our families, for our security, yet we seldom get round to planning for the one thing none of us can avoid - our funeral. Without a plan in place, your loved ones will be left to cope with all the arrangements. The decisions which must be made may be distressing and the financial burden of a funeral can be heavy. A simple way of achieving peace of mind for you and your family is by purchasing a Lincolnshire Co-op Funeral Plan, which lets you tailor make funeral arrangements at today’s prices and will safeguard your wishes. As an added bonus throughout February 2017, Lincolnshire Co-op members benefit from 10 per cent dividend when they buy a plan. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Spalding, Holbeach and Long Sutton Funeral Director Debbie Staff encouraged people to start thinking about the future. “It’s sensible and practical to plan ahead. It’s a thoughtful and responsible way of showing concern for your family,” she explained. “It means decisions can be made calmly now, so that at the emotional time of your family’s loss, your wishes can be respected. “And with our unmatched experience and personal service, we will carry out all the arrangements with care and professionalism when the time comes.”

Why choose Lincolnshire Co-op? Here’s what some Lincolnshire Co-op Funeral Plan holders had to say: “We had a spare bit of cash, so we invested in a funeral plan rather than the children having it pay it out later.” “Your plan represented the best value and flexibility.” “We’re Lincolnshire Co-op members. The staff were extremely good.” “I’ve always been a Lincolnshire Co-op member and the dividend on the funeral plan was a bit of encouragement.” “It will make it easier for my son in the future when anything happens to me. I also received a very nice dividend when I paid.” What makes a Lincolnshire Co-op Funeral Plan worth investing in? Burial and cremation costs continue to increase at a higher level than inflation, and it’s likely that monies paid into insurance policies and many other types of funeral plan may not provide adequate cover for funeral expenses. It makes perfect sense to provide for the one thing none of us can avoid. Lincolnshire Co-op Funeral Plans start from £2,795 and unlike many other prepayment funeral plans, there will be nothing more to pay - regardless of when the funeral takes place - if your requirements don’t change.

Can I make decisions about what my funeral will be like? A funeral plan is a way of recording your funeral wishes, planning and paying everything in advance. It can give real peace of mind as all of the details are taken care of, meaning family members won’t have to make decisions at a difficult time in the future and know what you would have wanted. Every person is different and every funeral can be too. It should be a reflection of the individual. A Lincolnshire Co-op Funeral Plan does more than just cover the cost of a funeral. It provides an opportunity to arrange the funeral exactly as you want it. Most people have specific wishes about the personal touches associated with their eventual funeral, whether it be the music they want playing in the service, their coffin or the type of flowers they would like. Lincolnshire Co-op funeral staff can go through all of the arrangements, providing information and advice to make sure everything is tailored to you.

How do I arrange a funeral plan? Simply get in touch with your nearest Lincolnshire Co-op funeral home to arrange a time to discuss your needs. Treat your feet

T

here’s nothing quite like a salon pedicure, time to relax and be pampered but if you’re tight on time or money why not try to recreate the zen at home? A DIY pedicure can also be a great girls-night-in event, mother/daughter moment or a romantic evening of pampering if your significant other is willing to play along! For your home pedicure, you’ll need some supplies: • large bowl • soaking salts or bubble bath • towels • cuticle oil • nail file, clipper and cuticle stick • pumice stone and foot file • polish -a top coat, base coat and color • cotton pads foot cream • nail polish remover Before you get started remove any old nail polish Fill a bowl or basin with warm water, add some bubble bath and Epsom salts, then sit back and relax. Ten minutes is a

Follow our tips now to avoid pain later Dry feet properly – Parents may have said this all the time whilst growing up but it’s true. Ensuring they are dry after a bath or shower, especially between the toes, prevents the germs that cause Athletes foot from breeding. A good foot cream must then applied, not a body lotion. Remove hard skin – This is a common problem and can be easily fixed. With damp feet use a pumice stone or foot file regularly. A chiropodist can help with this too if it is bad enough to require treatment. If you have this benefit on your Health Shield health cash plan you can claim cashback on your visit. Avoid ingrown toenails – These are caused by careless cutting of the toenails. Always ensure they are cut straight and not on an angle. Failure to do so could result in time off work for operations. Use clean socks – change socks daily. Simple. Wear comfortable shoes – Especially around the office if this is where you work. If you wear heels ensure they are a good height no more than 4 inches, and vary them daily. Don’t over wear flip flops – They do not support the foot causing heel and arch pain. Over 60? Take more care – The older people get the more care feet need. Over time skin thins and joints can stiffen, whilst people can become more vulnerable to the cold weather.

good amount of time to soak your feet. Take out one foot, pat it dry and add a drop of cuticle oil to the skin around your nail bed. Massage it in and using a cuticle stick, gently push that dead skin back. Rub the oil in all around the toenail, softening up any rough spots or snags in the skin. Repeat on the other side. Next, you want to exfoliate your feet and legs. This step is important as it helps soften calluses and rough spots, smoothes your skin and allows fresh, healthy skin to shine through. Take one foot and gently massage the scrub into your foot and leg, moving in an upward motion for two or three minutes. Then repeat on the other foot and leg. This process not only feels heavenly but also stimulates your circulation. Rinse off your feet in your bowl, removing any excess foot scrub. To treat calluses, you have a few options. There are pumice or callus stones that you use, preferably on damp skin, to soften the callus and any snags or rough patches. Another tool that some people prefer is a foot file, similar to a callus stone, it has a bit more abrasion to it to smooth the skin. Regardless of what you use, stop if it hurts or if you break the skin. The key here is to smooth the callused area, not remove or cut the callus. Aside from the infection risk, calluses, however unattractive, protect our feet. Rub a nice thick foot cream or lotion on your feet and legs, moving in an upward motion

Now’s the time to start shaping your toenails. A good standard to work to is that you want to be able to run your finger across the top of your foot and have your toenails barely grazing your finger. Using a clean nail clipper clip straight across, careful not to cut too close to the edge of the skin. A smart recommendation is to clip the edges at a 45 degree angle. Starting from the outer edge ightly file into the center of the nail. Repeat this motion several times until you’ve got a nice, smooth edge on that side. Then, do the opposite side from where you started, using the same gentle stroke and filing towards the center of the nail. A square, or “soft square” is a good shape to create; making an oval shape gets you too close to the skin, again causing ingrown nails. Take a cotton pad dipped in nail polish remover, and swipe it across each toenail to remove any moisturizer or oils. Apply polish like this: • base coat; wait two minutes • first coat of polish; wait two minutes • second coat of polish; wait two minutes • top coat Then sit back and relax for at least half an hour to let them dry!

Food & drink special

1498 Spice Affair T

he Spice Affair has been open now for 3 years serving local residents from their premises within The Red Lion Hotel, but with its own side entrance, in Spalding town centre. Serving contemporary Goan cuisine, it offers a wide range of meat and vegetable dishes, it tries to present food you would eat in Goa today. Goan culture, says Loyd, is in his blood: “What I really want is for people to come in and experience the good food, good service and intimate atmosphere for themselves”. While the dishes come from Arabian and Portuguese cultures a quick look at the menu reveals that much of the meat and vegetables are locally sourced – a local restaurant supporting local suppliers. Says Loyd “It’s great to have a mixture of local and exotic ingredients. We also have a large choice of meats on the menu, venison, duck, lamb and pork. Pork is a delicacy in Goa.”

1498 The Spice Affair is open from 12-2pm for lunch Tuesday to Sunday and for evening meals 5-10pm Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday and from 5-11pm on Friday and Saturday. There is a business lunch special called “Thali” which comprises small meat or vegetable dishes in one platter accompanied by rice, bread, salad and a drink or sweet for just £5.95. Loyd comments; “Customer service has always been my number one priority and I am a true believer that a successful business will be built on this and word of mouth recommendations. We now have many loyal and regular customers who we welcome through our doors on a regular basis. We are very proud to have been asked to cater for many events away from the restaurant over the past 3 years” The Spice Affair is pleased to support many local charities, sports events and local

community initiatives. The restaurant is an ideal location for celebrating a special occasion or treating a loved one to an intimate meal for two this Valentines Day. Although they can cater for all occasions the restaurant seats 28 so booking is recommended by calling 01775 769435. What Our Customers Say Just had my first order delivered, it was one of the best Indian meals I’ve eaten in this country. Will definitely be visiting the restaurant. Myra Collins, Facebook By far the best restaurant around, unusual and different dishes, all superbly cooked. Have been as a couple, in 4’s and as a large group and the quality is always amazing (I’m a veggie, but everyone else eats meat). Try 1498 you really won’t be disappointed ......it’s unbelievably good x Rebecca Pearce, Facebook

Give Your Kitchen

a Luxury Finish

T

he kitchen is often the real heart of any home. A luxury kitchen, therefore, is both a pleasure and an investment.

Luxury Kitchens have a Number of High Quality Appliances It’s relatively easy to make changes with units and worktops, you can paint them, change the handles or even replace them individually. Realistically speaking, however, the only way to upgrade appliances is to replace them completely. However keep in mind it’s best to create a new kitchen based on the best appliances you can afford. Topquality appliances are both luxurious to look at and a pleasure to use. They can also be more economical over the long-term than their cheaper counterparts since they can last longer and use less energy.

Make sure that there’s plenty of good-quality light There is a very good reason why artists, photographers and professional interior

designers all pay a great deal of attention to lighting. It can make all the difference to a picture or a room. Traditional kitchen lighting has tended to be on the harsh side, since the general attitude has typically been “safety first”. A more modern approach is to look at when and where you need “working light” i.e. light so that you can see what you’re doing and also when and where you need “living light” i.e. light which allows you to enjoy your kitchen when you’re not actually working in it. Banish the fluorescent tubes of old and choose lights you love

Make the floor more than an afterthought

a kitchen from moderately attractive to stunning and luxurious. If money is tight, you can combine more affordable, basic, tiles with more expensive statement ones. You can also look for pre-loved bargains. Since so many people love decorating and redecorating their homes, there’s always a good chance of finding used items which are in excellent condition at a fraction of their original price.

Disguise unsightly essentials

Kitchen flooring has to be durable and easy to clean quickly, so carpets are rugs are generally out of the question. Tiling is a popular choice and floor tiles are available in so many colours and patterns, the only limit is your imagination. Those on tighter budgets may want to take a fresh look at lino – yes, you read correctly, it’s long since moved on from the 1960s. These days it’s available in a huge variety of colours, patterns and textures and can look every bit as luxurious as more expensive flooring materials.

Remember that details make all the difference In particular taps, tiles and handles can take

Working kitchens generally have to house items such as cleaning tools and liquids and waste/recycling bins. In theory these could be stored out of sight and out of mind. In practice, they tend to find their way to places which are easily accessible and therefore usually very visible. Instead of trying to fight this, run with it. Decant washing-up liquid out of unsightly bottles and into pretty, pump action dispensers. Move cloths, sponges and scourers away from the taps and into pretty containers beside the sink. Upgrade your bins so you’re happy for them to be seen. This will help to ensure your kitchen always looks luxurious while staying practical. A new kitchen is a fantastic thing and something you do only a few times in your life. The point we’re getting to is that you should have what you need. So many of us spend our time in substandard kitchens and there’s no need for that – go and grab some luxury in your home!

Range Rover Evoque Convertible PROS ‘N’ CONS Good Looking Pleasurable Sophisticated Talented on and off road ➠ Pricey ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠

FAST FACTS

Y

ou have got to ask why people spend so much on a piece of metal with a wheel attached to each corner. It almost seems a bit nutty when all most of us want is a tool to get us from A to B. But cars aren’t always about transportation. They can be about our emotions and our egos. Some of us use a new car as a status trophy – a badge of honour to show how well we’ve done in life. I suppose if we have a head-turner of a car in the Western world it’s about pleasure-seeking, too – and having an easier life. Let’s face it; we would rather have a shiny, luxurious car to travel around in than a rust bucket. And that need for self-satisfaction can overrule the downto-earth side of us when we are selecting a car. Some of us kick the word ‘practicality’ to the kerb anyway. I mean, good grief, in Great Britain we purchase more convertibles than many other countries in the EU. Why is this? After all, the UK is often dank and cloudy. Again, it comes down to that feel-good factor. Going topless when there’s sunshine in our country produces a massive rush well, it does for me, anyway. It’s a better remedy for melancholia than a happy pill from the GP, I’d bet. But being prescribed a drop top car isn’t likely to happen at the doctor’s! Speaking of fresh-air motoring, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible has been launched recently. The looks of this SUV take a bit of getting used to, but they grow on you. As the fifth fellow of the Range Rover club – and the first convertible – Land Rover believes the all-new car will play a key part in continuing Range Rover’s tale

of success, forging a fresh SUV sector. If industry professionals’ prophecies about a 20 per cent expansion in the international SUV market over the next five years prove accurate, then, the car firm has nothing but sunbeams heading towards it. The Range Rover Evoque Convertible has a material roof that can be triggered on the move – as long as the SUV isn’t doing more than 30mph.The five-layer top will fold down in around 18 seconds and it will go back up in approximately 21 seconds. Inside, the colossal InControl Touch Pro nav is pleasing – and, more crucially, it works very well. Genuinely, the pinch-tozoom function is as quick as Apple’s iPad or iPhone. The Range Rover Evoque drop-top will seat four people and, for a convertible, it has an adequate 251-litre load area, too. The other good thing is that the roof opens and closes inaudibly and it tucks away compactly, instead of piling-up on the car’s tailgate. You can go for either a petrol unit or a diesel engine, buoyed by turbo power. This is all linked up to a smooth-operating ninespeed automatic ‘box, and all-wheel drive. The 2.0 turbo diesel is the best engine if you’re after economy, returning around 49.6mpg on average. The diesel Evoque Convertible shifts from zero to 62mph in 10.3 seconds, which is 1.3 seconds longer than the hard-top Coupe’s sprint - but both manage a top end of 121mph. The 240PS petrol propelled power unit is nippier, getting to 62mph in 8.6 seconds.

(Evoque HSE Dynamic Lux Convertible - Diesel)

Max speed: 121 mph 0-62 mph: 10.3 secs Combined mpg: 49.6 Engine layout: 2.0 litre 4—cylinder turbo diesel electric motor ➠ Max. power (PS): 180 ➠ CO2: 149 g/km ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠

Price: £51,700 On and off-road, the non-tin-top SUV seems just as gifted as its hard-topped sibling – with indistinguishable clearances, and a mutual 500mm wading depth. Indeed, at the car’s European launch in the French Alps, the Evoque Convertible worked its way up, down – and through - everything asked of it – including deep snow. I doubt many motorists going for a roofless Range Rover will take the trouble with the off-roading part – but it is reassuring to know the SUV can do more than just look sexy in affluent suburbs. The all-new Range Rover Evoque Convertible is being made at Land Rover’s Halewood plant, alongside the five-door and Coupe versions, and it is on sale in over 170 markets around the world. Prices kick off at around £47,500, which is £5,200 more than a Range Rover Evoque Coupe with a roof.
