John Hayes CBE MP Stands Against Cancer At Party Conference John Hayes CBE MP has backed an appeal from Cancer Research UK for more NHS staff to deliver the life-saving cancer tests and treatments people need. The South Holland and The Deepings MP met with campaigners from the charity during the Conservative Party Conference to hear about the “Shoulder to Shoulder Against Cancer” campaign. It calls for everyone to stand with the NHS and urge the UK Government to tackle the chronic shortage of staff who diagnose and treat the disease. Every year, 930 people are diagnosed with cancer in South Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group’s area and as the population grows and ages, that number is only set to rise. More staff are urgently needed to keep up with the demand for life-saving tests and treatments, yet already 1 in 10 NHS diagnostic posts are unfilled. Speaking after the meeting, John Hayes said: “After the past 70 years of fantastic work from the NHS, it is vital to ensure it is fit to face the

challenges of the decades to come. “Many of my constituents have been affected by cancer in some way, and 1 in 2 of us will be diagnosed in our lifetimes. “We all want a world-class service where people are given every opportunity to survive this devastating disease, for it to be diagnosed early and for patients to receive the best treatment possible. “That’s why I’m backing Cancer Research UK’s call to stand shoulder to shoulder with the NHS against cancer.” The UK Government is set to publish its longterm plan for the NHS later this year, which will also include a roadmap for the NHS workforce over the next decade. To speed up and improve cancer diagnosis and treatment, investment is needed in key professions, including radiographers and radiologists who carry out and interpret scans such as MRIs, endoscopists who look inside the body by inserting a tiny camera and pathologists who look for abnormal cells, as well as oncologists (cancer specialists), nurses and surgeons.

Shaun Walsh, Head of Public Affairs and Campaigns at Cancer Research UK, said: “Over 170 UK parliamentarians from across the political spectrum are already backing the Shoulder to Shoulder campaign, and we’re grateful to John Hayes CBE MP for his support. “This is a critical opportunity for cancer care in the UK. By 2035, more than 500,000 people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer every year across the UK, an increase of more than 150,000 people on 2015 levels.* “By acting now and investing in the early diagnosis and treatments workforce, so many more lives could be saved. “By 2034, our ambition is for 3 in 4 people to survive their cancer, but advances in technology and treatment mean nothing if we don’t have the staff to deliver them. “That’s why the support of MP’s like John Hayes is so vitally important to help make the UK’s cancer services the best in the world.” For more information visit cruk.org/ shouldertoshoulder or join the conversation on twitter #ShouldertoShoulder.

Purpose Built Cattery At Boston College Boston College’s ever-expanding Animal Care unit has recently added an extra facility in the form of a purpose built cattery. Funded by the Blue Cross, the cattery will become a temporary home to a wide range of rescue cats. The exciting partnership between the charity and Boston College will see students gaining hands-on experience by taking care of the cats’ every day needs, as well as introducing them to their new owners – who will be carefully selected by the charity. Jackie Clarke- Williams, Boston College Animal Care Lecturer, said, “At Boston College we try to provide the Animal Care learners with a variety of species to care for, so that they are able to expand their knowledge and experience. We identified that felines were an area we were limited in within the unit, and after speaking to the Blue Cross the plan was put in place for a new cattery.” The Blue Cross’ vision is that every pet will enjoy a healthy life in a happy home, and the Animal

Care learners will be contributing to this vision by providing the appropriate care, as well as also having the role of writing the story behind each of the rescue cats who will be living in the cattery, which will be showcased on the Blue Cross website. The first cats arrived at the College this month, with full details of how they can be adopted on the Blue Cross website, bluecross.org.uk.

Army Cadets travel to The Somme Army Cadets from across Lincolnshire have travelled to Northern France where they had the opportunity to learn more about the First World War by taking part in a battlefield tour. The cadets who are part of Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force (ACF) took part in the three day trip in late October as part of a national campaign to mark 100 years since the Armistice and give the cadets a greater insight into what life was like for soldiers in the trenches. During the tour cadets visited battlefields and re-created trench systems to learn more about the conditions faced by soldiers, were given talks by historians about how the war developed, the technology used and the impact it had upon the 20th Century. The tour then culminated in a parade at the Thiepval Memorial to the missing.

Cadet Lance Corporal Alexander Shaw, aged 15, explained: “It was a real honour and a privilege to be able to visit. It was devastating

to see first-hand the list of names on the memorial. It must have been a harrowing experience for them”

Delays in test results for Cervical Screening Healthwatch Lincolnshire is aware that rates for cervical screening (smears) nationally are reported to be the lowest for 20 years. We have also been made aware by Lincolnshire patients that they are experiencing delays in results when they do go for screening causing anxiety and stress. We asked NHS England what was happening in Lincolnshire and whether the delays could cause harm to our patients. NHSE said, “NHS England acknowledges that the time women are currently waiting for cervical screening results in Lincolnshire is not acceptable and we apologise to women who are suffering delays in receiving their results. Difficult though it is, women and their clinicians are asked to be patient in the knowledge that the service is working through the samples as fast as it can, the current backlog has started to be reduced and will continue to do so. With regards to potential clinical risk associated with delays; the aim of screening is to detect and treat pre-cancerous changes, it is not a test for cervical cancer. The length of time for abnormal cells to become cancerous is reflected in the relatively long screening intervals of 3 and 5 years depending on age.”

6 | SIMPLY SIMPLY SPALDING SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Whilst this provides some reassurance that delays are improving and the risk of harm is managed, this can only be improved by women being more aware of the risks and going to their scheduled appointments for screening, prevention being the better option for our residents. All health screening is essential to ensuring any changes to our body are picked up early, cervical screening alongside breast screening is certainly among one of the most important that all women should commit too. Early detection of changes can often be a life saver, so Healthwatch Lincolnshire urges all women to attend every offer to be screened they receive. If you have any experiences you wish to share with us about screening or any other health or social care service please do not hesitate to call us 01205 820892 or email us at info@healthwatchlincolnshire.co.uk.

Provision for Special Education Needs is coming under increasing pressure with anticipated future demand expected to increase by over 6% by 2023. This is creating pressures not just in specialist schools but also in primary and secondary schools across the county. In November, I was part of the Lincolnshire County Council executive that took the decision to spend ÂŁ50m over a 5 year capital programme to ensure all special schools have the facilities and premises to meet all special education needs and disabilities. This will allow for an additional 500 places across the county. For the children and young people concerned it will allow access to local specialist schools rather than having to travel long distances, sometimes out of the county, to get the specialist education that they

Nick’s Notes Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages

Th e new strategy will create greater capaci ty in our special needs schools and one of th e exci ting elemen ts of that for me i t that specialist trained teach ers can go out to our mainstream schools wh en required and teach th e teach er. require. Travelling long distances to specialist schools causes unneeded stress to young people with special needs and disabilities and means they are away from home for longer periods. By keeping it local it will

allow for more social time with their families as well as their local communities and a chance to engage more regularly with their school friends. The Building Communities of Specialist Provision Strategy has been carefully put together with the support of head teachers from the specialist schools, parents and carers. In South Holland this includes our three well known specialist schools, The Priory, The Garth and Gosberton House. The Priory and Garth schools will amalgamate to one school across 2 sites and will increase in capacity from 128 to 177and is due to be implemented in September 2022 and will include all needs. Gosberton House, also including all, needs, is due to be implemented in September 2023. The new strategy will create greater capacity in our special needs schools and one of the exciting elements of that for me it that specialist trained teachers can go out to our mainstream schools when required and teach the teacher, which will give teachers and teaching assistants much greater expertise in helping these children achieve more and progress further through the education system than is currently the case. A nice Christmas present for all our children and young people with special education needs and disabilities. Happy Christmas!

Nick

Advice

Statutory declarations

Citizens Advice

A statutory declaration is a statement in writing, signed by the maker of the statement and witnessed by a magistrate, commissioner for oaths or, sometimes, a court officer. It must be set out in a specific form (regulated by the Statutory Declarations Act 1835) and state that the person makes the declaration conscientiously, believing it to be true. Anyone who ‘knowingly and wilfully’ makes a false statement in a statutory declaration is guilty of an offence under the Perjury Act 1911. When are statutory declarations used You may need to make a statutory declaration, for example:• If you want to change your name • when goods have been posted abroad and do not arrive • to redeem pawned items when the pawn tickets are lost • when an insured person is making an insurance claim, and appears to have given conflicting information to the insurance company. In these cases, an investigator may ask the insured person to sign a statutory declaration • when a person from abroad is coming to the UK, for example, as a visitor or fiancé(e), and the UK resident needs to undertake to maintain the visitor and/or ensure

the marriage will take place within a certain time. In the case of a fiancé(e), this may be accompanied by a statutory declaration from the local priest indicating that s/he will marry the couple within the specified period. Such statutory declarations are probably best witnessed by a notary public • if a personal representative, in the administration of the estate of someone who has died, asks her/ him to swear a statutory declaration to identify who is entitled to benefit under the rules of intestacy or as a member of a group of people mentioned in a will. If a statutory declaration is needed for proceedings in a different country, the document may need to

...give free, confidential, impartial and independ ent advice to help you solve your problems

be translated. Translators are also needed when a non-English speaking person must make a statutory declaration for a matter in the UK. In these cases, the translator will also need to swear a statutory declaration to say the translation is accurate. It is generally preferable for such a document to be sworn in front of a notary public since a notary public is more usually recognised as an authority to witness documents which have been translated. There are no rules about who can prepare a statutory declaration as long as it is set out in the specific form. If a commissioner for oaths is drawing up a statutory declaration, s/he would pass it to another commissioner for oaths (usually another solicitor) to be witnessed. If a notary public drafts a statutory declaration for legal proceedings in the UK, s/he must also apply this rule. If s/he drafts a statutory declaration for use in legal proceedings overseas, s/he may both draft and swear the statutory declaration. A statutory declaration has to be witnessed by a commissioner for

oaths, a notary public, a Justice of the peace or in some cases a court official, for example, if it is needed in connection with parking charges. If a commissioner for oaths is used to witness a statutory declaration, there is a fee. A fee is payable to a court for a JP to witness a statutory declaration but the fee can be exempted or remitted by the court if the client cannot afford it, or if s/he is receiving publiclyfunded legal services. For example, if a statutory declaration is to be used in county court proceedings, the client should complete a form for exemption or remission of fees. A JP cannot collect a fee for witnessing a statutory declaration if the clerk to the justices is not present, for example, if the JP is at home. More about help with fees If a notary public swears a statutory declaration s/he has drafted for use in legal proceedings overseas, there is no statutory limit to the charges s/he may make. If the statutory declaration is for use in legal proceedings in the UK, the fee is limited.

Gosberton House Academy Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school?

Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Ayscoughfee Hall School The first half term of the year came to a busy end at Ayscoughfee Hall School. Year 3 visited Flag Fen to discover what life was like for British Celts 3,000 years ago. They became field archaeologists for the day, handling artefacts, making clay pots and seeing Bronze Age log boats discovered at Must Farm. Reception enjoyed a Superhero day, dressing as their favourite superhero character, making superhero shields and undertaking super missions. They also went on a shopping expedition to Spalding Market to buy super fruit and vegetables. We held our Harvest Assembly and Year 6 took donated food items to Agape Food Bank. Money was also raised for various Forces charities through the holding of a Red, White and Blue dress up day on 5th October and for Breast Cancer Now through a pink dress up day and cake sale on 12th October.

Sport continued to play an important part in the calendar with netball fixtures against The Peterborough School and football and hockey tournaments closer to home for the older children. We were proud to send a selection of school artwork, including textiles, pottery and paintings to the ISA Eastern Region competition in Essex last month and even prouder to hear that several items have been put forward to represent our region in the National Art finals to be held at the end of the year. We are now beginning preparations for Christmas with the fete, Nativity plays, carol concert, parties and trip to the pantomime.

Childcare from 6 weeks to 11 years, based in Weston Hills. Funded places for 3 & 4 year olds and 2 year olds, dependant on certain criteria. Our highly qualified staff work closely with parents for the benefit of your children. Before/after school & holiday care offered.

Autumnwatch presenter and one of Britain’s best known conservationists, Chris Packham visited Gosberton House Academy recently to celebrate their achievement of attaining the National Autistic Society’s ADVANCED Status Award. Chris is a visiting lecturer at Lincoln University (Gosberton House Academy is part of the Lincolnshire Educational Trust- part of the university). Chris was recently part of personal documentary, “Aspergers and Me” which gave a small insight into his life and how being diagnosed in his forties affected him. He is acutely aware of how having Asperger’s (a form of Autism) has helped make him who he is today and how it impacts him in everyday life in the TV Industry. Ms Stanton and the rest of the team at GHA were thrilled with the school’s most recent accolade. The school is one of very few schools and the first in the East Midlands to

be awarded Advanced status. The report listed numerous reasons why the school was so deserving of this award from their creative approach to learning, the sharing of expertise within the Autism and wider community and their engagement with families and friends of the school. Parental, pupil and professional feedback was also crucial to their achievement. ‘We couldn’t ask for a better setting for my child’, ‘This is the best school that I have ever known’, ‘GHA has been a godsend for all of us’, ‘All staff consistently update their knowledge and practice’, ‘Gosberton House Academy always puts the child first, looking at their individual needs to help them achieve their full potential whilst supporting their family in whatever way they can.’ The children were thrilled with their special visitor and the school hope to welcome Chris back to visit again in the near future.

Weston Hills CofE Primary School The term leading up to Christmas is always a busy one, and we have several visitors coming into school. Class 4 are taking part in six workshops from the Young Journalist Academy, both this term and in the New Year. The programme provides them with access to professional levels of training in media production and journalism. This includes will include Article Writing, Filmmaking, Radio Production and Photography. Friends of Weston Hills have reorganised Discos for KS1 and

KS2 for this term, due to the last one being postponed following electricity problems. Our new “trim trail” has now been opened by County Councillor, Mr. Anthony Casson. This is proving a wonderful addition to our playground. Year 6 children have been taking part in the Bikeability safe cycling training course. All children passed, so congratulations to them! This term our extra curricular activities include: Homework, Drama, Choir, Taiko, Jigsaw, Lego Club & Football.

Election time

he Mini Police family in South Holland has grown considerably in the last few weeks, with pupils being elected in schools from Crowland to Donington, Spalding to Sutton Bridge and many villages in between. Twenty two schools have held elections and 166 new recruits have been elected. The children from Years 5 and 6 (ages 9-11) were given a briefing on the Mini Police project before the summer holidays and were then visited again by the PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) who will be leading the project. The children were reminded about the aims of the project and expected standards of behaviour, and those who wanted to take part were given a week to go away and think about the skills and attributes they held as individuals, and what qualities they thought they would be able to bring to the Mini Police project. A week later, our PCSOs returned to school, speeches were read and votes were cast. This in itself is an amazing achievement, as each of those 166 children bravely stood before their peers, reading out their election speeches and being democratically voted to take up the role. Across the district, we have heard some incredible election speeches, with candidates clearly having taken great amounts of time and effort to promote their own ideas and pledges as to why they should be elected. We have heard children from who have overcome shyness, illness and nerves, watching them grow in confidence as they stood before their classmates (and several other classes in some schools) proudly telling their audience what qualities they have as individuals, what they want to do as a Mini Police officer, and why

they should be chosen. Children from Years 5 and 6 were then asked to vote for the candidate from each year group (5&6) who they felt had written the best speech and would be the most suitable Mini Police officer. Those elected were then issued with their uniforms, and their role explained. With so many new recruits, we are already hearing of some great work being undertaken, with many of our Mini Police teams now taking part in playground patrols, where they have been tasked to take a practical approach to problem-solving, and to record instances of good behaviour in the playground. As I write this article, many schools are just returning from half-term holidays. The Mini Police are back in action, with many schools and PCSOs preparing to deliver our Anti-Bullying topic to pupils to coincide with AntiBullying week in mid-November. Lincolnshire Police are supporting ‘Odd Socks Day’, working with the Anti-Bullying alliance charity by donating to forego uniform policy and wear odd socks. We are sure there will be some great reports to come next month. Photographs show our newly elected Mini Police from schools across South Holland.

Well! I must tell you my human is right for once. Ever since she took the little, less furry puppies to a super fun Youbake baking club session here in the summer holidays (where they made yummy muffins!) she has been telling me how taken she is with Moulton Chapel. And I can see why. A friendly ‘hello’ from everyone we meet. Not one single bit of litter. And a basket of apples and pears blown from their trees by the wind, with a

for my tea! Or if my human is in the mood to cook, she could buy a little something for our meals from the butcher – and get some supplies from the shop and Post Office. First class! I nose my human; ‘maybe the little hair salon could cover up our grey hairs?’ Silence. ‘My grey hairs?’ I venture. She gives me a reassuring stroke and a smile, and we scoot along to the beautiful, octagonal St James’ Church in the centre of the village. What a lovely landmark! We have a little look at the Youth and Community Centre too. I bet it gets busy. My human reads what is advertised on the notice board to me. ‘Zumba, tea dances, pie and pea supper…’ ‘Woof woof! Pie!’ I wag. Watch out, Moulton Chapel – I could soon be relocating my kennel here!

T

his time last year I sat down to write my first column for the Simply magazines. I can hardly believe 12 months has already gone. So much has happened this year for me professionally and personally; it’s very difficult to have imagined I would be sitting here with a 6 week old, never mind everything else! Change is a big thing. It affects us all in different ways, but for most people, the thought of change and what that might bring is very scary indeed. Inevitably, the end results aren’t anywhere near as bad as we are expecting, we just sort of get on with it. Is it then not so much the actual change but the perceived pathways that might be the problem? Do we let our minds imagine worse than what is really coming? It is said children have imaginary friends, but as adults I believe we have imaginary enemies. Those enemies might be what other people think of us, tangible things that we think might happen, situations or feelings that we don’t want to deal with. The enemy might even be ourselves. The enemies are real to us because we are naturally overthinkers, and because the things we tell our brains are what they believe. This year I have had to deal with a few of my own ‘imaginary enemies’. Although all our stories are very different, there are undeniably some common themes within them; self-worth, being ‘good enough’, obligation to put others above ourselves to name but a few. My

theme for December (as appears to have been my theme for 2018!) is to be yourself, and to be happy. We most often don’t realise we are perfect the way we are. Our only purpose is to be ourselves, otherwise we will deprive the universe of who we came here to be. If you are waiting for someone or something else to validate who you are, then you are going to be waiting a very long time! One small positive thought in the morning about yourself can change your whole day…try it! It’s weird in the beginning, especially if you say it out loud, but it really does work. It’s just a small piece in the puzzle of life, but lots of small pieces add up to something brighter which puts us in a more positive position when we fear change looming on the horizon. To finish this years writing I am going to borrow some sage words from the Dalai Lama “It is under the greatest adversity that there exists the greatest potential for doing good, both for oneself and others’. There exists in your darkest hour the opportunity to use it to heal yourself or use the experience to help others. Forgive what you thought was unforgiveable and let go of what’s holding you back. Wishing you all a very merry, peaceful and love filled Christmas. See you in 2019!

Love Annette xx

Keeping Your Elderly Family Members Safe in their Home For many families with an elderly loved one, the potential for injury while they are home alone is all too real. With the trend of “aging at home” on the rise, families and home carers are looking for reliable affordable ways to ensure that the ones we love are safe at all times. For some, hiring a home carer is the best option. These carers either live at home to ensure round the clock care, or come throughout the course of the day to check in and take care of tasks that elderly people cannot take care of themselves, such as certain cleaning duties. Live-at-home carers are a good choice for families who are extremely busy and unable to provide the necessary assistance to their elderly family member. Additionally, these carers are helpful when the family member has certain conditions which require 24 hour supervision and assistance, such as mobility issues or conditions like Alzheimer’s or dementia. Another option, for people who remain healthy and active in their older years, is to purchase a home medical alert system. The purpose of senior alert systems is to provide a quickly accessible method of alerting the emergency services of any problems your loved one may have. Although many people opt out of purchasing an alert system because they rely on telephones, the benefit of a medical alert device over a phone is that, since

Bank House Care Home, Gosberton & Brun Lea Care Home, Pinchbeck Offer High Quality Residential, Dementia and Respite Care For further details please call: Bank House 01775 840297 Brun Lea 01775 680581

the device is worn on the body, it is immediately accessible. This is particularly helpful because when someone has an accident in an area of the house without a phone, or they are rendered immobile due to a fall or other situation, they can simply press the button on either their medical alert bracelet or necklace which will immediately alerts the company providing the service of their situation and send out an ambulance if need be.

Typically, senior family members prefer a medical alert device as it affords them more independence than a home carer; however, it is ultimately up to the family to decide together which arrangement provides the best care for their loved ones. A live-in carer should be a priority for senior citizens with more severe conditions, but for those who are still healthy and active a medical alert device will usually suffice, especially for those who are still

SHH! BEST KEPT SECRET IN SPALDING

cared for by family regularly. The constant availability of aid provided by these services is a huge reassurance to family members who, for one reason or another, cannot provide the round the clock care their loved ones require and deserve. With the help of a medical alert service you know your elderly family members can get help in any situation, giving them the safety and confidence to continue living alone, and giving you the peace of mind knowing that they will be taken care of 24 hours a day.

Honeypot Day Nursery & Pre-school

J

ust over 10 years ago, the local authority built a new school building for Weston Hills C of E Primary School and little did I know that when leaving the old school, my passing comment of ‘This building would make a good nursery and preschool’ would result in actually doing it. There have been up and downs along the way, but many more ‘ups’ than ‘downs! After a protracted purchase period, we finally owned the building and, with 4 members of staff and eight children, opened our doors in April 2008. Honeypot Day Nursery and Pre-school now has approximately 75 under 5’s on roll, together with 47 school children who attend various out of school sessions and 16 members of staff. As parents ourselves, we recognise the importance of providing high quality, affordable childcare in a local community. Our primary aims are: • To provide the highest quality standards in care and development through the creation of a warm, caring and stimulating environment. • To provide the best opportunity for each child to develop socially, physically, emotionally and educationally at their own rate as individuals. • To maintain close working relationships with parents, ensuring we work in partnership with the child’s best interests at the heart of everything we do. • To ensure children leave Honeypot with the necessary skills for the next step in their life as they start school. • For everyone to feel happy, safe and valued. We recognise that sending a child to Honeypot is usually the child’s first experience of care and education outside of the home and we aim to make it a happy and memorable one. We maintain records of every child’s achievements at the nursery, which are available for parents to access on-line with many, many pictures. Parents can contribute to this record and it therefore develops into a learning journey covering the whole period the child is with us, for parents to keep when the child leaves. Our staff are well qualified with a variety of qualifications from EYPS to Level

3. We usually take apprentices who will all be working towards achieving a level 3 qualification. We feel passionate about our role and expect high standards from each and every one of our team. The staff team is fabulous and many staff are also parents themselves. Children need to play, and we plan learning opportunities that are both fun and stimulating, aiming to develop enquiring minds. Children enjoy a variety of activities, both indoors and out – in all weathers! They may come home with works of art for the fridge, a beautiful building (from cardboard boxes) or cakes. Sometimes they come home with nothing, but they will have had a great time and developed new skills from the things they have done. We have a lot of singing and movement and during the summer we encourage parents to join us for ‘sports day’ – I use the term loosely! We have trips out, Christmas parties, visitors in (police, reptiles, ceramic painting) graduations, leavers and parents’ parties. Honeypot Day Nursery takes funded

children from 2 years old, where parents meet government set criteria. All 3 and 4 year old children can receive funded care for up to 15 hours per week during the school term (or a lower number stretched over the year) from the term after they turn 3. From September 2017, 3 and 4 year olds with working parents, may be entitled to receive a further 15 hours per week – taking the total to 30. We are happy to show you around our nursery, and talk to you about your childcare needs. For more information call: 01406 380803, email: office@ honeypotdaynursery.com or see our website www.honeypotdaynursery.com

Childcare from 6 weeks to 11 years, based in Weston Hill Funded places for 3 & 4 year olds and 2 year olds, depe on certain criteria. Our highly qualified staff work closely with parents for t benefit of your children. Before/after school & holiday care offered.

Vancouver Quarter at Christmas With King’s Lynn’s festive lights switched on, the countdown to Christmas is officially on and there are plenty of reasons to discover King’s Lynn ahead of the big day. There will be festive Late-Night Shopping events, and no countdown to Christmas would be complete without Father Christmas jetting in to meet children in his grotto. Late Night Shopping launched on November 29 and runs every Thursday evening until Christmas Day with stores around the town centre remaining open until 8pm. There will also be festive street entertainers, music and activities for all the family to enjoy on all these Thursdays leading up to Christmas.

Father Christmas will be visiting King’s Lynn every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday right up to Christmas – albeit he will leave Lynn a bit earlier on Christmas Eve to get back to the North Pole to finalise everything and check on those cheeky elves! The grotto is free for children to attend but donations to the Vancouver Quarter’s chosen charity, EACH, are welcomed. Father Christmas’ grotto will be situated within the shopping centre and bookings need to be made via their website but move fast as these appointments are snapped up quickly.

Food & Drink

Happy

New Year! You had a great idea a few weeks ago to host a New Year’s Eve party but now reality has hit home and there will be 30 hungry mouths to feed and the expectation of a ‘show stopper’ spread. Don’t worry if you’re in panic mode as we have got some top tips to help you throw a fabulous party with minimal effort. Decorations Sometimes the clichés work…. keep it simple and less is more in the case of decorations. A little bit of sparkle goes a long way! Use candles on tables, glitter on black table cloths and glitter dipped balloons around your house. If you can find some disco ball baubles then why not change your tree decorations to just sparkles? As it’s New Years Eve many peoples resolutions will start the very next day, so it’s the last opportunity to indulge before it’s all about health. Why not create a sparkling dessert table and a glitzy champagne bar? Food Preparation is definitely the key here. Plan out what you can serve as a buffet so you aren’t stuck in the kitchen all night – this doesn’t mean it has to be stale sandwiches and sausage rolls. Here are my favourites to serve up • Anti-pasti platter • Fresh bread with dipping oils • Cheese, crackers and chutneys • Mini savoury pastries • Chocolate dipped strawberries If you have children coming too, why not set them up their own picnic table with cardboard lunch boxes and treats for them to fill it with – sandwiches, pizza, fruit, crisps, drinks etc. 26 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

It’s all about the presentation with food, think about having various plates, trays and serving platters to mix up your look. How about investing in some small signs to tell people what you have put out for them? If you are having a smaller dinner party gathering then again think of dishes you can prepare in advance that don’t involve hours in the kitchen watching over the cooker whilst your guests are enjoying the evening, you want to have fun too. Music Again keep it simple, why not look at playlists that are already set up for you – services such as Spotify and amazon music are perfect for this task! Alternatively ask guests to suggest their two songs of choice and create your own personalised bespoke playlist for the evening. The Big Countdown As midnight approaches how are you going to see in the new year? You could fill a large glass vase with party poppers, fireworks in the garden or sparklers? Make sure you have glasses ready to quickly fill with fizz around 11.45pm, the radio or TV tuned in ready to hear the famous Big Ben chimes and enjoy!

Gift Guide Let your loved ones choose their own Christmas gift this year with vouchers from Shaws of Maxey! Shaws have an award winning selection of day trips and holidays covering everything from a visit to the seaside to a top London show, a tour of the Scottish Highlands to Italy’s lakes & mountains. Vouchers are available in any value and can be posted out the same day. Brochures can be viewed online so take a peek, there’s something for everyone! www.shawscoaches.co.uk | 01778 342224 | enquiries@shawscoaches.co.uk

Add that festive sparkle to your gifts this year with a treatment at Utopia Hair & Beauty in Holbeach. Rather than the usual stocking fillers ‘experience gifts’ are becoming more and more popular, our team member Scarlett went along to test out Utopia’s facial and back massage treatment. “My whole experience was very calm and relaxing but informative too. Initially Cath performed a wonderful back massage and assessed my skin making me realise my whole skincare routine is wrong for my skin type, this is something I will now be changing! From the warm bed, to calm music you could not ask for a nicer, private environment to take time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.” The facial treatment used a range of aloe products to add nourishment to the skin. Cath is passionate about supporting local businesses and therefore sources her products locally to the salon but this doesn’t mean you compromise, in fact the opposite – they have won national awards! Salon owner Cath offers a whole host of hair and beauty treatments and will gladly help you select the right treatment for you or to give as a gift this Christmas. Call 01406 425628 to book your appointment or order gift vouchers.

Let’s not forget our four legged friends either…. Laughing Dog has got you covered. Hayley’s dog Bertie has certainly enjoyed woofing his way through a selection to test them out. His favourite selection was the natural oven-baked Christmas treat hamper which he said “it’s the perfect festive gift for those four-legged friends who deserve to be pampered”. Inside this treat box, your pup will discover our grain free turkey and cranberry star biscuits, our wheat free Christmas puddings and our bespoke wheat free Christmas bone carefully crafted by our artisan bakers. The perfect recipe for a tail-waggingly good Christmas! This particular box is £20 but check out their website at www.laughingdogfood.com where goodies for stocking fillers start from as little as £2.95.

The Avon Moodlight Projector Clock is the perfect gift or accessory for the build up to Christmas. The Mood light projector has two festive scenes and digital clock function as well as two colour changes. To purchase this or any other Avon product in time for Christmas contact Louise Neal on 07708 058395 or visit www.avon.uk.com/store/loulouspamperparlour

If your loved one is in need of me time, why not think about a facial at Avoca at Vine Street in Spalding. Rosie recently enjoyed the spa like facilities and sampled their Season Oxygenating Treatment. This facial is specifically targeted to boost the skin’s defence system through the winter months. The cocktails of mineral products used change season to season to ensure the skin is left feeling radiant. Rosie left the salon feeling relaxed and on top of the world “It is possibly the best facial I have had at a salon or spa” This particular treatment costs £34 but gift vouchers are available too. Visit Avoca at 2 Vine Street, Spalding or call 01775 760080. 28 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

ong Sutton was historically in the wapentake of Elloe in the Parts of South Holland. The Friday market dates back to the early 13th century when the town was a prosperous trading centre. [citation needed] By the mid-14th century, it was considered to be one of the richest communities in Lincolnshire. Prosperity continued for it’s residents into the 20th century, helped by the arrival of the railways. In the 1950s eleven trains

Long Sutton Flooring Long Sutton Flooring supply and fit all types of carpet, vinyl, laminate as well as being a Karndean specialist. Karndean Design flooring is luxury vinyl flooring which is inspired by nature to make the functional stylish. The results are stunning to look at yet easy to look after. Each comes with a selection of customizable features so you can create something really special and personal to you. Buying from experienced staff rather than over the internet or in a shop that has a carpet section is very important as you will be able to use their expertise. For example, they will be able to advise which type of flooring will go best in each room as they are able to assess suitability based on things like footfall and use. Plus they may be able to talk you round from the cream carpet for your child’s playroom to a more suitable colour or even a different material such as Karndean. They will know the brand of flooring which is right for you rather than you being faced with

Time Out Time Out Gift and Interiors opened its doors for the first time in June 2005 with limited stock of gift ideas and occasional furniture. Over the years it has gone from strength to strength and now stocks everything you could possibly need in home furnishings and gift ideas. The brainchild of Shaun Cross, the shop also includes an upstairs

lots of different types of flooring and not necessarily knowing the key differences between them. Another benefit is the use of professional fitters. Fitting carpet, vinyl, laminate and LVT is not as easy as it looks (especially laminate and particularly LVT) and if you choose to do it yourself and make a miscalculation or end up damaging your flooring then you may find yourself having to buy all over again. With a fitter you know they are qualified, have fitted flooring for many others and will do the job right the first time. And if there are any problems they can be sorted by the fitter which means no stress for you. Long Sutton Flooring are particularly proud of their service, offering benefits that perhaps others might not, such as moving your furniture out of the way and back again after the floor is laid and offering free measuring and free estimates. They will also price match within 30 miles for peace of mind so you know you will get the best deal from them.

What is the OCT health scan? Optical Coherence Tomographers (OCTs) work a little like an ultrasound for the eye. It shows us beyond the retinal surface into the tissue behind – allowing us to spot abnormalities up to 5 years before a traditional test. It can spot early signs of: • Diabetes • Glaucoma • Age-related Macular Degeneration • Hypertension Why have an OCT health scan? • Spot issues sooner – an OCT scan allows us to detect and monitor any changes to your eye health up to 5 years earlier than other methods of eye screening. • See more – we can instantly show you the 3D High Definition images of your eyes.

• Build a more complete picture – all your scans are stored on your records. So, from test to test, we can compare your OCT images, and quickly pinpoint any changes in your eye health. The OCT examination is completely non-invasive and painless. Nothing touches your eye at all. It only takes a few seconds The health scans are particularly important if you are over 40 or have a family history of diabetes, macular degeneration or glaucoma. We would encourage you to have regular OCT eye scans, since the sooner early signs of change are spotted, the more vision can be preserved. EARLY DETECTION MEANS FASTER TREATMENT LOOK AFTER YOUR EYES! Phone and book your OCT scan today at Coakley Opticians.

Spalding opticians invests in new technology Specsavers in Spalding has invested in 3D scanning technology which allows optometrists to view the eye in more detail than ever before. The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine is a cutting-edge piece of equipment, usually found in hospital eye departments. It is used for a variety of functions including screening and management of conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. The technology produces a structural scan of the eye, including layers of the eye that would not normally be visible using traditional eye testing techniques. The results are similar to an ultrasound or MRI scan, in that it creates multiple scan slice images that are built up to form a total image. The OCT machine uses a safe, laser light source and not x-ray-type radiation. Store director and optometrist, Ian Stradling, says: ‘This investment gives our team the ability to enhance the services to the local community by identifying and helping to detect or manage conditions, with a level of diagnostic capability which previously would have needed a hospital visit. ‘OCT technology produces such a detailed picture of the structures in the eye that it allows us to identify signs of diseases years earlier than traditional methods. Given that nearly half of all sight loss is preventable*, the sooner we can detect these conditions, the sooner we can help manage them or refer people for treatment.’ The scan will be in addition to a thorough eye test, during which the optometrist will use a range of clinical tests and procedures to measure the quality of someone’s vision, as well as

The OCT scan takes just a few seconds and is non-contact and painless. A customer’s OCT images will be stored on file so we can help note changes over time – a real benefit to the monitoring of someone’s overall eye health. Jump in the Tub

You may think that hot tubs are just for fun but they can actually have health and wellbeing benefits too!

Foot Health Clinic Elaine formed her business in May 2013 after qualifying through Stone Bridge College, Cornwall and has never looked back! The demand has increased so much since starting in 2013 that in 2017 Martin started training at the college of foot health practitioners in Birmingham and qualified in Feb 2018. Elaine and Martin offer a home visit service at care homes, Age UK and around Spalding, Donington, Crowland, Bourne, Holbeach, Long Sutton, Swineshead as well as all the surrounding villages. As well as offering treatments in patients homes they also offer a clinic within Tip2toe, Spalding in The Crescent, Spalding since June 2017. Elaine and Martin ensure they keep up to date with CPD points (continuing professional development points) and Elaine and Martin are CRB checked. Many people take their feet

for granted & go for a long time suffering with problems without seeking help because they aren’t aware of where to go or who to call to help them. Foot Clinic is a proud member of the Alliance of Private Sector Practitioners, which is regulated by the Professional Standards Authority.

Treatments include • Thickened nails • Painful corns • callus (hard Skin) • cracked heels • in-growing toe nails • diabetic foot care

Foot Health Clinic • Hot tubs and spas help with minor aches and pains, soothing sore joints and muscles. The buoyancy of the water removes pressure from joints. Heat is carried deep into your muscles, allowing them to relax and bringing temporary pain relief. Hydrotherapy is very helpful for specific, painful conditions like arthritis and knee ailments. • The heat helps increase blood flow throughout the body. Warming blood causes blood vessels to dilate. After as little as 20 minutes, blood pressure is reduced. • The focused streams of water from a hot tub’s jets provide therapeutic massage you can control the intensity of, effectively relieving chronic lower back pain. It’s like having your own personal massage

therapist on call! The warm water increases your heart rate but lowers blood pressure. You get many of the same benefits of exercise but with less stress and strain on the heart. • The steam from the water can open up nasal and bronchial passages, improving upper respiratory health. • Studies have shown that just 30 minutes a day spent in a hot tub or spa results in a significant drop in blood sugar levels. This is a big benefit for those with Type 2 diabetes. • Relaxing in a hot tub or spa can help relieve tension headaches, induce relaxation, reduce stress, increase a general sense of wellness and well-being, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep quality, depth and duration.

Loose Dentures? Not to worry as Tulip Dental has the answer! Last year nearly two million teeth were removed from British patients because of natural ageing, trauma, decay or gum disease. Missing teeth often lead to a restricted diet, causing malnutrition, but the psychological impact of having an unsightly mouth can cause problems too. Dentures, either single, multiple or an entire set of removable false teeth, are an option. However, many patients have problems with irritation to the gums and keeping the teeth in place (a glue-like substance is used, but this can be dislodged while chewing). Dr Israr Razaq and Dr Uzman Ul Haq at Tulip Dental Practice have together placed over 800 implants and counting. Their interests lie in providing patients with alternatives to full mouth dentures so patients can taste their food and securely eat foods such as apples and steaks. Tulip Dental Practice is a state of the

art, air conditioned modern dental practice with a 3D impression scanner. Dr Razaq has a specialist interest in minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry and has been shortlisted as UK Young Dentist of the Year 2018. Tulip Dental Practice offers comprehensive dentistry under one roof “We can provide solutions to all patients of all ages. We can provide sedation if you are nervous and always will listen and repect your wishes. Our aim is to find a solution to help you achieve a healthier and functioning smile.” (Dr Israr Razaq) Call us today for a consultation regarding dental implants, teeth straightening and all forms of general dentistry. Padma Yoga Growing a yoga community is a little like growing a baby. It takes A LOT of PASSION, a little bit of luck and A HUGE AMOUNT of LOVE. When I started teaching in Spalding in 2007, I had no idea that my three classes a week would grow in to a ‘proper yoga studio’. From humble beginnings… a sincere desire to share the incredible benefits of a regular yoga practice… I began with a weekly class at The Quaker Meeting House, before adding extra classes at the Catholic Church Hall. In 2011, I moved our classes in to our first dedicated yoga space at home. A clean and tidy space for 12… just! By 2014, we had nine classes running each week and were bursting at the seams! It’s almost four years to the day, since we moved in to the Ladies Room at the Consti Club on Broad Street. In those four years, the studio has grown beyond anything I could have imagined. We have hosted yoga teachers from around the country, along with growing our own small team of teachers at the studio. Our

students have ranged from two weeks old to ninety years of age, and pretty much everything in between! We’ve done yoga, we’ve chanted for healing and peace, we’ve chilled out to the sounds of a didgeridoo, gongs and all manner of sound instruments. We’ve eased creaky bits and have stretched and strengthened our bodies and minds. We’ve supported close to 200 expectant and new mums… and have raised money and donated a variety of stuff to charity. It’s been an amazing time, one that is now drawing to a close. On Wednesday 19th December the studio will close… my husband and I are moving to a place we love, to begin the next chapter of our lives. So, I wanted to say a HUGE THANK YOU, to each and every one of you. Without YOU (yes, you!) LOVELY PEOPLE none of this would have been possible. I have some amazing memories for which I am truly grateful. Thank you for making Padma Yoga such a special place. Love & OMs to you all Claire x

Spalding resident’s eyesight saved by local optician Spalding resident, Bernice Adcock, escaped a detached retina while being on holiday after visiting her local independent optometrist Andy Molsom of Molsom & Associates. She now urges everyone to attend regular eye examinations and choose their Optician with care.

A

fter experiencing floating spots in her vision, and previously experienced small tears to her left retina, she wanted peace of mind and booked her eye exam before her holiday. At the eye examination, Bernice explained that her symptoms had improved. She had already consulted the hospital 3 weeks previously, and was given the all clear. It wasn’t until Andy Molsom looked at the retina that he saw the retinal tear in her right eye. Using 3D OCT scanning technology he could see that the retina was still attached, but with a retinal tear there is a high risk of fluid getting underneath the retina and pulling the retina off. As this was potentially an emergency, Andy Molsom rang the Royle Eye Department at Pilgrim Hospital to book Bernice in that afternoon for a consultation. The ophthalmologist confirmed that there was a new large retinal tear in her right eye, and was

immediately treated using Laser Retinopexy Bernie said “I may have had to cancel and rebook our planned holiday but Andy’s knowledge, experience and hi-tech equipment saved me from having a full blown retinal detachment! I shall forever be grateful. Returning from the hospital to our home, walking past our packed suitcases in the hall, made me realise that without Mr Molsom’s efficiency, my retina could have detached during our flight! I don’t like to think of the outcome if I hadn’t gone to see him that afternoon”. Mr Molsom added, “Bernice is very lucky, she did the right thing to ensure that her eyes were healthy before jetting off. Despite having no further symptoms, the jelly in her eye came away from the back of the retina, but in doing so it tore the retina. “While we only rarely see retinal tears or

detached retinas, the advance of 3D OCT scanning technology we enables us to see how the jelly in the eye is changing over time, monitor it and give specific advice to patients.” Bernie added, “Andy Molsom has always been there for me if I have any visual worries. Along with his team they are friendly, experienced and knowledgeable and I would not go anywhere else for my eye care.”

Home & Property

Is Your Home

Christmas Ready? Here’s our checklist for a stress free December and festive period Declutter Between the decorations, gifts and guests, your home will be packed this festive season. Make space where you can by decluttering key areas, remembering the simple 6 month rule: if it hasn’t been used or appreciated in 6 months, you don’t need it. Bake Ahead Give yourself time outside of the kitchen by preparing festive bakes in advance. Gingerbread, un-iced cakes and cookies can call be baked ahead and stored in the freezer until Christmas arrives. Order the Turkey Whether you order it from a supermarket or direct from the supplier, now is the time to order your turkey and other Christmas dinner musthaves. Write & Send Christmas Cards ‘Tis the season to embrace tradition, so try not to fall into the habit of wishing your loved ones a Happy Christmas on social media. Letter writing is a dying art, surprise family and friends with a thoughtful card and embrace the festive season this year. How about having personalised family festive cards printed? Deck the Halls If you haven’t already it’s now time to turn your home into a winter wonderland. You could even make an evening of it with hot chocolate and a festive film

Create a Cosy Guest Bedroom If you’re hosting this year, make sure your guest bedroom is ready for visitors. Extra blankets, slippers, a festive scented candle and a hot water bottle will make your guests feel like it’s a home away from home. Wrap Presents Finalise your shopping and ideally make sure gifts are wrapped in the first week of December. This will free up time in the week leading up to Christmas, and will stop present-hunters from ‘accidentally’ finding their unwrapped gifts. Organise Your Kitchen As the host, you’re going to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Make it as pleasant as an experience as possible by sorting through unnecessary clutter, cleaning your oven and ensuring you have enough pots and pans in advance. You’ll thank yourself come Christmas day. Take Inventory of Plates & Cutlery Are you a few plates short? Have more forks than knives? Now is the time to update your tableware and cutlery sets in time for the big event.

The Week Before It’s almost here! Time to tick off those final finishing touches… Deep Clean Your Home Those baubles will shine even brighter next to clean floors. Take some time to deep clean your entire home ready for festive guests to arrive. Finalise Family Plans Although it wouldn’t be Christmas without a little family drama, you want to avoid it if you can. Make sure everyone is aware of Christmas day plans, including the time of lunch & who is sleeping where.

46 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Buy Fresh Produce Your mind may be preoccupied with Christmas lunch, but remember you’ll need to shop for Christmas morning breakfast and Boxing Day as well. Go shopping for fresh produce a couple of days before the 25th, keeping an eye on the best before dates.

Christmas Eve Prepare Christmas Dinner Chop the vegetables, prepare the turkey, make the gravy. Do as much as you can now so you can spend Christmas day with your loved ones, away from the kitchen. Set the Table If you have the room, set the table now so Christmas morning can be spent opening gifts with a glass of something fizzy. Wrap Last-Minute Gifts Couldn’t resist that last gift you know they’d love? It happens. Once you’ve prepped the dinner and set the table, wrap any last-minute gifts you’ve bought and place them under the tree. Relax You’ve done it! With everything pre-prepared, it’s time to pour your favourite drink, put your feet up and look forward to a stress-free day with your loved ones. Merry Christmas!

New Volvo V60 PROS ‘N’ CONS à Handsome à Comfortable à Powerful à Efficient à Pricey options

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS

(Volvo V60 D4 Momentum Pro - as tested)

A

t first glance, you think the new Volvo V60 is the V90. Then you get closer and realise it’s smaller than its brother. The cars look very similar, and that’s a good thing because they’re both handsome. If you put both models next to each other, I bet you’d agree with me that the V60 beats the V90 in terms of attractiveness. Why? Because it’s more compact and as a result, the car looks more taut and athletic. But the new estate has far more about it than sex appeal. The outgoing V60’s boot has been superseded by a load area that’s the biggest in its segment. Open the tailgate, and 539 litres of cargo capacity greets you. Crucially, the fresh V60 beats its German foes in this area. The BMW 3 Series Touring’s boot only offers 495 litres and Audi’s A4 Avant manages just 505-litres. The Swede is longer than the Audi and BMW too,

meaning there’s decent room for four adult occupants. A fifth person could squeeze into the middle of the back seat, but a prominent transmission tunnel hump hampers legroom. In the front, all looks classy and relaxed, with a dashboard that is mainly digital. There’s not as much metal or wood in the V60 when compared with the V90 - instead, you get soft plastics. However, this doesn’t rain on the parade - everything still looks solid and well screwed together. Behind the wheel, the new V60 is planted and comfy. I was handed the keys to the 190PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder D4 model. The diesel engine pulls like a train with zero to 62mph arriving in 7.9 seconds. Top speed is 137mph. It’s an efficient unit too, returning a claimed average of 61.4mpg. The new estate car’s ride is excellent, primarily due to the flexible suspension system, and the steering weights up well from 40mph. These two things alone make

à Max speed: 137 mph à 0-62 mph: 7.9 secs à Combined mpg: 61.4 à Engine layout: 2.0 litre four-cylinder diesel turbo à Max. power (PS): 190 à CO2: 119 g/km

Price: £36,350 the 2018 model V60 a delight to drive. It’s entirely suited to the UK’s roads, making it an ideal commuting machine. Thanks to its general roominess, it’s also a perfect family vehicle. The new Volvo V60’s spec is a bit of a downer. From launch, there are only two levels of trim - Momentum and Inscription. Happily, the more athletic R-Design and elevated Cross-Country variants will soon join the party. And while the V60 is well kitted-out with features like LED headlights, sat-nav and a portrait touchscreen, other alluring accessories, such as semi-autonomous driving aids and Apple CarPlay, are on the options list. These can make an already costly car even more expensive to buy or lease. Still, you should have the V60 on your shopping list if an estate car is what you’re after – especially one as eye-catching and accommodating as this.
