Welcome to the August issue All I can say is WOW! What an amazing few weeks of weather and football July has given us. We may not have brought the trophy home but we sure know how to celebrate and get behind our team. It has been lovely watching my son start to show an interest in sport, whilst he didn’t really understand what was going on he certainly got caught up in the mood and was shouting ‘goal’ or ‘England’ regularly! We have all been able to enjoy the outdoors with the beautiful weather we have had, I’m not sure the gardens are enjoying it too much as mine currently looks very brown instead of green. All too soon it will change I’m sure. Back to the issue in hand….August! The last weeks of the school holidays before we embark on a new term and year for students and teachers alike. There’s still plenty of time to get out and enjoy your break, so make the most of it. In this issue we are looking at eye-care, looking after your ears, we have a seasonal food & drink special with some yummy recipes, our Home & Property feature this month is all about fencing and Tim test drives the Hyundai i30 N.

Focused changes to South East Lincolnshire Local Plan open for consultation The South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee has agreed a number of modifications to its Local Plan, which are now being opened up for public consultation. The council is seeking views, solely on the changes made following the examination hearing sessions, through a six-week public consultation, running from 16 July to 28 August 2018. The new Local Plan for South East Lincolnshire (covering the areas of Boston Borough Council and South Holland District Council) has been prepared to guide development and use of land in the area up until 2036. The plan includes sites to be allocated for different types of development, such as housing and employment in order to meet the area’s needs,

as well as identifying areas of land which must be protected from development. It also covers a wide range of other planning policies which, once adopted, can be used to judge planning applications. All of the documents published for consultation will be available to view online from July 12 at www.southeastlincslocalplan.org/proposed-mainmodifications, in public libraries and mobile libraries and at the council offices in Boston and Spalding during normal office hours. You can comment on the consultation documents in the following ways: • By emailing a completed comment form (available to download from the website or can be collected at locations listed above) to: programme. officer@southeastlincslocalplan.org

• By posting a completed comment form to: Elaine Henton, The Programme Officer, South East Lincolnshire Local Plan, Boston Borough Council, Municipal Buildings, West Street, Boston, PE21 8QR Comments must be received by 5pm on August 28. If you have commented during previous consultations it is not necessary to repeat those comments this time around as they have already been considered in reaching this stage. All ‘duly made’ comments received will be submitted to the Planning Inspectors for their consideration. For further information, please contact the Programme Officer, Elaine Henton at programme. officer@southeastlincslocalplan.org or telephone: 01205 314385 or 07976 589885.

Lincolnshire NHS Trust signs Armed Forces Covenant on Reserves Day Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (LCHS) signed the Armed Forces Covenant recently to pledge its support to the Armed Forces community. Organised to coincide with Reserves Day, the signing took place at the trust’s headquarters in Waterside South, Lincoln, and saw Chair Elaine Baylis QPM sign the Covenant alongside Lieutenant Colonel Mary Read, Commanding Officer of 254 Medical Regiment, representing the Ministry of Defence (MOD). LCHS recognises the value of serving personnel, both regular and reserve, veterans and Cadet Force adult volunteers, understanding the skills they learn through their volunteering can be transferred back in to the civilian work place. Mrs Baylis explained: “As both an employer and as an organisation which plays an active role in delivering healthcare to military families across the

whole county, we are very proud to have signed the Armed Forces Covenant. “We hope that by doing so, we are able to continue to strengthen our commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community and make a positive contribution to Lincolnshire’s rich military heritage.” The trust has recently been awarded a Bronze Employer Recognition Scheme Award for supporting those who serve as part of the Armed Forces community. Armed Forces Champions are also working to raise awareness of the organisation’s work with the military and how they support those who give up their free-time to serve our country. To find out more about the Armed Forces Covenant visit www.armedforcescovenant.gov.uk Search for the Ministry of Defence’s ‘Employer Recognition Scheme’ online to learn more about achieving Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards.

News Essential maintenance on South Holland Centre in Spalding Essential maintenance with a specialist contractor has begun on the structure and external fabric of the South Holland Centre in Spalding, with the centre and its busy summer schedule remaining open throughout the process. The work, which is expected to finish in early October 2018, will see the erection of external scaffolding to carry out updates on areas of the building in order to prolong the lifecycle of the building. This includes work on the glazed wall curtain, the clock tower, and fixings. The South Holland Centre will remain open as usual during the maintenance and working with the contractors the council are ensuring that there will be minimal disruption to users and to the wider town centre. Nick Worth, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Growth and Commercialisation, said: “The South Holland Centre remains a key asset to the district and the planned works to the external fabric of the building due to be carried out will mean that the Centre will be fit for purpose for years to come.”

Local MP Helps Raise Awareness Of Trigeminal Neuralgia John Hayes MP is helping to raise awareness of Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN), often referred to as “the suicide disease”, where any facial movement such as talking or smiling, for example, or even light touch to the face can bring on jolts of agonising pain. Thankfully, TN is a relatively rare condition, thought to affect an estimated 60,000+ people in the UK. It renders almost all the pleasurable things in life - eating, drinking, chatting, laughing, or kissing a loved one - difficult if not sometimes impossible. Often, the gentlest breeze outdoors, air conditioning or even just the slightest movement of walking can bring on a sudden attack of pain in the face, just like a huge electric shock. It is described as like being repeatedly jabbed in the face with a cattle prod. At an event at the House of Commons on Tuesday 12th June organised by the Trigeminal

Neuralgia Association UK, MPs from all parties, together with medics and patients, gathered to hear from eminent speakers about this littleknown condition which causes continual intense pain attacks on one side of the face. TN is not referred to as “the suicide disease” without good reason. Normal painkillers, even morphine, have no effect on TN and the side effects of the anti-epileptic drug treatments can be intolerable. People with TN live in constant fear of another attack and can become isolated and withdrawn. In some instances, sufferers consider suicide to avoid the torture of recurring pain attacks. There have been eight known suicides in recent years. Yet little is understood about this rare disease or even how many people in the country are affected. Sufferers, many of whom undergo unnecessary and even harmful treatment before reaching

For local news visit www.simplyspalding.co.uk

a diagnosis, are often not able to continue working and yet cannot claim benefits due to the unpredictable nature of the condition, for which there is no known permanent cure. Two prominent MPs, Andrea Jenkyns, Conservative MP for Morley & Outwood, and Jim Fitzpatrick, Labour MP for Poplar & Limehouse, coincidentally suffer from TN-related conditions themselves and are tremendously supportive to the Association and all its members. It is hoped by raising awareness of the condition, its financial costs in terms of misdiagnosis, incorrect treatment, lost working time and disruptions to family stability, that more can be done to relieve suffering and the life-changing consequences of this debilitating condition. News St John’s Care Home Celebrate Queen’s With Increase in homelessness acrossBirthday Lincolnshire Street Party On Care Home Open Day to be tackled with new strategy Lincolnshire has seen an increase in the number and the complexity of the needs of people and their households who are homeless. But a plan to tackle the issue is underway thanks to a strong partnership made up of all the Lincolnshire district authorities, including South Holland District Council, and Lincolnshire County Council. Figures show that rough sleeping is rising and there has been a year on year increase in rough sleeping levels across Lincolnshire. There has been a 100 per cent rise from 2012 to 2016 and a further 87 per cent rise between 2016 and 2017, according to the autumn rough sleeper counts. To help respond and prevent people becoming homelessness and sleeping rough the Lincolnshire Homelessness Partnership is launching a new Homelessness Strategy. Amanda Pauling, Homelessness Prevention Programme Manager for Lincolnshire admitted the challenge ahead is difficult but she is optimistic about the strategy and the partnership.

and objectives for preventing and tackling homelessness across Lincolnshire over the next 5 years. The strategy has 5 key priority areas: • Partnership: Developing and maintaining strategic relationships and partnerships • Prevent: Preventing homelessness wherever possible to do so • Protect: Protecting the most vulnerable from experiencing homelessness including tackling rough sleeping • Place: Ensuring access to the right type of housing • Possibility: Ensuring a sustainable future for supported housing The partnership has already implemented the new Homelessness Reduction Act. It includes a new duty to prevent homelessness regardless of priority need and for authorities to agree a personal housing plan with each applicant to prevent or relieve homelessness. Amanda Pauling explained the Act represents

Together we have a real opportunity to make an impact for those who find themselves homeless in Lincolnshire. She said: “This strategy represents a genuine partnership approach to tackle and prevent homelessness. “Together we have a real opportunity to make an impact for those who find themselves homeless in Lincolnshire. “The challenge ahead is difficult as there are many factors that contribute to homelessness. But everyone has the right to a safe and secure home and that has to be our goal.” The new homelessness strategy for Lincolnshire sets out the key challenges, priorities

a ‘key change in homelessness legalisation’ particularly setting out greater support to prevent or relieve homelessness for those who are not in priority need. The partnership is working with a range of statutory and voluntary sectors to tackle barriers that prevent rough sleepers from moving away from the streets. Significant numbers of rough sleepers have additional needs which can include mental health issues, addiction to drugs or alcohol, being physically unwell or any combination of these. There are currently

South Holland District Councillor Christine Lawton,

difficulties accessing appropriate treatment services. As previously reported the partnership is currently delivering the ACTion Lincs project, which incorporates the support and co-ordination of key services including mental health, drug/ alcohol treatment services and the police as well as a number of other partners. Jonny Goldsmith, Operations Manager for P3, which is delivering the ACTion Lincs project said: “The development of ACTion Lincs is something that we should all quite rightly be proud of across Lincolnshire. And whilst relatively new, what the project has achieved to date, shows just what is possible when all partners – across a variety of different sectors – grasp the opportunity to work together. “Our hope now is that we can build upon the positive start that the project has made to ensure that we can improve the offer, not only for the 120 people who will be part of the project, but for Lincolnshire as a whole.” South Holland District Councillor Christine Lawton, portfolio holder for Housing and Health said: “I strongly support the launch of this new strategy to help tackle the scourge of rough sleeping across South Holland and Lincolnshire. By working cooperatively across the County with these specific areas of focus we can offer more comprehensive and invaluable help to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.”

Mini Police

NICK WORTH

Mini Police is a new primary-school engagement coming to Lincolnshire in September 2018. Mini Police is a primary school initiative involving pupils from Years 5 and 6 in primary school (ages 9-11). The aim of the project is to build trust and confidence between the Police and local communities, to teach children responsibilities in a fun and interactive way, and to build better communities. Children in 119 schools across Lincolnshire will have the opportunity to work with Police, and get involved in Policing and community projects. The programme is written around the school curriculum, so they aren’t missing out on education. In March 2017 Lincolnshire Police piloted the project at two primary schools in Boston (Carlton Road Academy and Staniland Academy). In September 2017, Mini Police volunteers from Year 5 were enrolled and they began to engage in projects both within their school and also their local community. Over the following months the Mini Police undertook several tasks including: raising awareness of being safe on the journey to and from school by

F supplying and fitting cycle lights, litter picking across the local area with Boston Borough Council and Lincs Housing Partnership, taking part in the Remembrance Parade in Boston with the Police cadets, interviewing Assistant Chief Constable West, learning CPR and first Aid with St Johns Ambulance, bag-packing for a local charity, delivering Scam advice to their community in a local supermarket and also helping to address the issue of parking around schools by designing and producing posters and flyers which they then handed out to parents and pupils. The pilot has been a huge success at both schools, and the decision was made to roll it out to schools across the whole county. In September 2018 a further 117 primary schools will join our pilot schools, with a total of 1006 Mini Police volunteers being elected. The project will be delivered into schools by the Neighbourhood Policing Teams, with each school having a designated Police Community Support Officer (PCSO).

ootball’s Coming Home! Well at the time of writing the day before the semi-final, I can’t be certain, but whatever the result the boys have done England proud. There are a few issues, the semifinal coincides with a meeting of the South Holland’s full council at 7pm – I suspect it may be one of our shorter meetings! The Chairman, Rodney Growcock, who was in hospital at the time of writing, so very best wishes to him for a speedy recovery, clearly was well ahead of the Gareth Southgate trend as our Rodney has been wearing exceedingly colourful waistcoats for some time, so clearly leading the way! Talking of coming home, a crew from Spalding Fire Station recently came home from Lancashire and the moorland fires on Winter Hill. They along with a team from Skegness formed the initial response to a National request for assistance and were among 21 Fire and rescue services attending this major incident. I know they were all astounded by the sheer scale of the incident. A big thank you to them along with Lincoln and Kirton who took over from them – you all did Lincolnshire proud. It is also a timely reminder that while the hot weather continues and the land surrounding us is tinder dry, not to throw cigarettes out of car windows onto grass verges, make sure your cigarettes are well and truly stubbed out, put disposable barbecues on bricks not on dry grass, do not leave glass bottles lying around as the sun’s reflection through them can start a fire and make sure any camp fires are well out. While Brexit May ( could that be the new name?!) be dominating the headlines nationally, for us in South Holland business continues as normal and one major piece of work draws

to a close that will make planning decisions a whole lot easier. The South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee has agreed a number of changes to its local plan, which are now being opened up for public consultation. The plan includes sites to be allocated for different types of development, such as housing and employment in order to meet the area’s needs, as well as identifying areas of land which must be protected from development. It also covers a wide range of other planning policies which, once adopted, can be used to judge planning applications. All of the documents published for consultation will be available to view online at www. southeastlincslocalplan.org/ proposed-main-modifications and is available in public and mobile libraries and at the council offices in Boston and Spalding during normal office hours. Advice

Citizens Advice

Flexible working

...give free, confidential, impartial and independ ent advice to help you solve your problems

You may feel that the reason your employer refused your request was discriminatory. It can be difficult to spot whether or not you have been discriminated against, so it is best to get specialist advice. Here are some examples to help you identify when your employer’s refusal of your flexible working may be discriminatory. Discrimination law is complex and you should always, wherever possible, get advice before you start a claim. You should always remember that, initially, you will have to prove your claim and that you will need evidence in order to do so. Your claim will not succeed if you base it on nothing more than a feeling that you have been discriminated against. If you are bringing an indirect discrimination claim, you will need to get statistical evidence to show the tribunal that people with the same protected characteristic as you are, or would be, disadvantaged by the same refusal to allow flexible working. Some advantages of taking a discrimination claim When you are thinking about whether to make a claim to an employment tribunal because of discrimination or because your employer has refused a statutory request, you may wish to consider the following points: • the grounds on which you can make a claim to an employment tribunal under the rules on flexible working are very limited • the right to make a statutory request for flexible working is limited to those who have been employed for 26 weeks, whereas rights under equality law start from the first day of employment • under the Flexible Working Regulations, you can only make one request for flexible working per year. There’s no such limit under equality law • any kind of flexible working request connected to childcare or disability may be protected by equality law • there’s no limit to the compensation which an

employment tribunal can award under equality legislation, although it will be linked to your actual loss of earnings. Indirect discrimination If you’re a working mother, you’ll have a claim for indirect discrimination, if you can show that apparently equal treatment has a greater impact on you and on women generally. If your request for flexible working is turned down because it is your employer’s policy or practice not to agree to requests from anyone, you haven’t been treated any differently from a man making the same request. However, the policy or practice puts you at a disadvantage, and puts women generally at that same disadvantage. Statistically, it has a discriminatory impact on women. However, it is open to your employer to try to justify the policy or practice, and if it can be justified it will not amount to unlawful discrimination.

any justification argument must be based on reality and not assumption, and employers must find the least discriminatory ways of maintaining business efficiency. Direct discrimination You may have a claim for direct discrimination if you’re treated differently from other workers because of a protected characteristic. Example: A gay man adopts a child. His request to start and finish work an hour earlier is not even considered, because ‘it’s not company policy’. However the policy says that all requests from parents will be given serious consideration. Acas Helpline If you would like further information on the legal requirements and best practice surrounding flexible working requests you can call the Acas Helpline on 0300 123 1100 for free and impartial advice.

Example: An employer refuses a woman’s request to work part-time, saying, ‘Part-time work is too disruptive for our business; our policy is to use only full-time employees’. This isn’t direct sex discrimination because the rule is applied equally to men and women. However, it is potentially indirect sex discrimination. The rule places a woman at a disadvantage, because she won’t be able to continue working for this employer if full-time work is the only option. Statistically, the rule also places women at a particular disadvantage, because more working women than men have childcare responsibilities. The employer’s comments about disruption to the business are an attempt to justify the rule, but

Wisbech Grammar Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school?

Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Ayscoughfee Hall School It has been an action packed end of term at Ayscoughfee Hall School. All the children have enjoyed a series of trips to various locations including Sacrewell farm, the Sealife Centre, the Fitzwilliam Museum and Botanic Gardens in Cambridge, The Dinosaur Park and the Green Britain Centre in Norfolk and the Food and Farming Show in Peterborough. Closer to home, Year 5 enjoyed a glorious afternoon on the Water Taxi as part of their geography study on rivers and Kindergarten rounded off their vegetable growing by harvesting potatoes and seeing how that crop could be used by enjoying a delicious sausage and

chip lunch, courtesy of ‘Oh My Cod!’ Music has, as always, played a central role this term, with performances by all the children who learn an instrument or have singing lessons. Ranging from Reception who displayed their basic piano scales to older children who performed guitar duets, songs they’d composed themselves and virtuoso drum solos, the assemblies were enjoyed by parents and the School alike. We had great weather for our Sports Day with staff, parents and children enjoying a picnic in the playground between the Infant and Junior events and the Interhouse Rounders competitions

Wisbech Grammar School held its 6th annual “Race at Your Place” event in the sunshine on 4 July raising a massive £3165 for Cancer Research UK, topping last year’s donation. WGS Race at Your Place raises £3165 for Cancer Research UK Wisbech Grammar School held its 6th annual “Race at Your Place” event in the sunshine on 4 July. The race follows the same lines as the “Race for Life” events with all profits going to Cancer Research UK. Altogether the School raised £3165, which is our highest ever raised for this event. Pupils, parents, staff, past pupils and members of the local community took part in the 5k run/walk around the beautiful grounds of Wisbech Grammar School. The winner was a parent, Elisabeth Sennet Clough, in a time of 21min 24 sec, followed by 5th Form pupil Kye McKewan in

22min 14. 3rd place went to member of staff, Freddie Whatling, in 22min 30 sec. There was also a 1-mile race for Magdalene House pupils which was won by Jemima Mitchell in 7min 21 sec, followed by Max Buschman in 7 min 28sec and 3rd place went to Finlay Neeve in 7 min 45 sec. In total there were 226 participants in the two races. The Friends of Wisbech Grammar School organised a tombola, Pimms tent, strawberries and cream and icecream all of which raised additional money for Cancer Research UK. 6th Form pupils also offered face painting to the younger pupils. All in all, a wonderful day of sun, fun, laughter and fundraising. The School would like to thank Tesco’s and Prontaprint for sponsoring the event.

taking place during the last weeks of term. We welcomed parents and friends to the Summer Production of ‘Rock Bottom’ and were delighted that the final performance was attended by our two most senior ‘Old Ayscoughfians’, Mr. Ian and Mr. Stuart Smith who were at the school in the 1930s. We are all really excited about the arrival of builders at the start of the Summer holiday who will

begin a total refurbishment and update of the Infant Block. The children have settled remarkably well into their new rooms and we now look forward to our summer holidays and the prospect of a new school year…our 99th!

Weston Hills CofE Primary School We have a few new members of staff starting with us in September. We are welcoming a teacher, Mrs. James, a KS2 Teaching Assistant, Mr. Bullock, and a new PE & Sports Apprentice, Miss Gould. We wish them all well in their new posts. We are also welcoming our 20 new Reception children in this term, as well as other new starters further up the school. We hope their stay at Weston Hills will be a happy

and successful learning experience for them all. Our first day back for the new term is Wednesday 5th September. Our Year 6 children who have opted to take part in the 11+ examinations for a selective place at secondary school will be doing so in September. Good luck! We have our annual residential visit booked to Aylmerton Field Study Centre in Norfolk from 28th September to 1st October 2017.

We have 30 Year 5 & 6 children booked on what should be a fantastic week of beach walking, swimming and other educational activities. Tempest Photographers will be coming into school in October to take individual photographs of all children, and sibling groups. The School Nursing Team will be in school in Term 1 to administer flu immunisation for Reception-Year 5 pupils.

ome and discover how our CoCurricular Clubs & Activities programmes enhance the all-round education available at Wisbech Grammar School. Academic excellence is at the heart of our educational approach, but we believe activities and pursuits conducted outside the classroom can make all the difference to a young person’s development and enrichment; they encourage positive attitudes to learn and vocations that reach through Higher Education to the world of work. Each term our pupils can select new activities as part of their school day or continue to master skills in those previously chosen. Many clubs and activities support classroom learning, such as Art Club for those taking Art at GCSE or Geography Help for those who need extra support. Other clubs offer myriad opportunities to extend life and learning beyond the confines of the curriculum, such as Astronomy Club, Archaeology, Science Award Scheme, Debating, Philosophy, Photography, Archery, Dance, Young Engineers Club, Dance, Music, Food competitions and much more. As pupils progress through the School, they have the opportunity to lead many of these groups and clubs which helps them develop their leadership skills and working with younger pupils across the School. This term, pupils from the Young Engineers Club set up their own radio station. They originally came up with the idea as they wanted to work on a project that could benefit all of the pupils at WGS. The radio station was a great idea, as everyone can enjoy and listen to the station. Also, thanks to Mr Logan (Head of Co-curricular) after broadcasting on a month’s free setup licence the radio station is now fully licenced with the national PPL radio licencing and broadcast authority; this means that the pupils can broadcast current songs and pass on news, weather and Period 5 notices.

25 June saw the opening night of the Lower/Middle School production: ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’. Playing to a packed Angles Theatre in Wisbech, the company performed with energy despite the extreme heat; they were rewarded with a much deserved standing ovation and a thoroughly satisfied audience.

If someone had told me I would like a school musical as much as I d' enjoyed Joseph I would not have believed th em. Well done to all involved! I am so impressed by your hard work and talen t.

Sport offers many opportunities for pupils with Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Cricket, Cycling, Badminton, Table tennis, Jogging club and much more. Many of our pupils compete at regional and national level competitions as well as take part in regular inter-school events. For those children that want to pursue a more professional pathway with sport, the School also has Development Player Pathways with Northampton Saints Rugby and Northampton County Cricket Club along with other partner relationships with local sports clubs. We run a Cricket Academy after School with guest top coaches; this is an opportunity for children to develop their cricket skills by professional cricketers. The Academy is open to children from within and external to the School. And above that, there is ample opportunity for adventure for pupils from 3rd – 6th Form with The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Award schemes, as is shown in our accompanying advert.

Wisbech Grammar School is a flourishing community where pupils have, both individually and collectively, a real sense of pride in their school. The School’s educational philosophy is rooted in an understanding that each pupil has different strengths and distinct qualities. Our primary focus is to develop these strengths, instil a passion for learning and educate in the broadest possible sense. We believe educational development is not simply confined to the classroom or laboratory, but can be found in the art rooms, dance and performing studios, music rooms and sports fields, allowing our pupils to really ‘discover who they are’.

Deepings Raft Race

The event has been in its current format for over 20 years and it just gets bigger and better every year – this years’ theme is hero or villain. Attracting over 2500 visitors, it’s the biggest event of its kind in Lincolnshire and a great day out for all the family. Where else can you go and get a virtually free fun time with the whole family? In Market Deeping High Street we have a host of stalls offering a multitude of items for sale, with lots of local charities tempting you with their fund-raising efforts. The everpopular Beer Bus is back if you fancy quenching your thirst on the move. There will be lots of races to watch, and all will be hotly contested, so make sure you give them all a good cheer along the way. All proceeds from the day will be distributed to local charities. In 2017 we raised and distributed over £8000 – let’s see if we can beat that this year! Raft Race History by Andy Pelling I’ve only been involved with the Raft Race for around five years, but as a spectator I’ve enjoyed many, dating back to when I moved here in 1992. According to locals (I’ve only been in Deeping for 25 years), its origins were earlier than that, starting out as part of a bet between 2 individuals in a pub so alcohol was

almost certainly involved! Over the years I’ve been here, I’ve seen some massive events, in the days when the field on the South side of the river was used, and some smaller but equally fun races too. The ingenuity of some Raft designs and costumes never fails to amaze me. Many well known (dare I say infamous?) and not so well known (light under bushels) characters have been involved in helping to promote this unique and fun event. The current committee is a small group of volunteers, and I’m pleased to say that this year the committee has grown with a few very keen and enthusiastic recruits who are bringing some great ideas forward. For the events I that have been involved with, we have had good weather and a great turn out (apart from one rainy year). Some serious money has been raised for local causes (over £12,000 in the last 2 years – not to mention what others raise on the day). There’s a huge amount of work that goes into the Raft Race, planning starts in September and many local businesses get involved with support and sponsorship, so even if we are unlucky with the weather this year, do please still come along. After all, a big part of it is about getting wet and there is so much going on that you will still have a great time!

ugust – shorts, sundresses and swimming costumes; I’m breaking out in a cold sweat just thinking about it! This month I would like to talk about our postnatal bodies. Lumpy, bumpy, stretch mark riddled, baggy, saggy, flappy – you name it, I am sure everyone of you has looked in the mirror post-birth and wondered quite what happened? We hear about celebrities ‘snapping back’ after birth and although we don’t expect that to happen for us (unless we have personal trainers and chefs), neither do we expect the stubborn, lingering wobbly bits that we don’t recognise as ourselves. We live in a society where to feel beautiful we have to feel desired. The problem with that is, when we rely on other people to feel secure and happy in ourselves, our happiness is not our own but that of other people’s opinion. And that is not a great place to be, physically or mentally. So why don’t we love ourselves? On the whole, women are very disconnected from their bodies. Pre-pregnancy, few take the time to get to know themselves or are in tune with their cycles or hormones. We buy into the social and industry standards of beauty. If we have a flat stomach and ‘perky’ breasts we feel good about ourselves and are thankful we have things about our physical appearance we like. It’s only during or after pregnancy when things start or stop working how they did before that most women take more of an interest or find the courage to really see themselves – and what

they see staring back is not always a welcome image. For some women it’s not until menopause that they really come to be friends with the body they have. Explore ladies – get to know all your perfectly imperfect nooks and crannies! Don’t let the image you have of yourself in your head or see in the mirror take away from the amazing human being you are. Especially not after childbirth. We hold on to so many social constraints of how we should look, feel, smell. As a woman, you hold the power to the Universe. Can you imagine how different the world would be if women woke up one day and decided they loved themselves unconditionally? Fashion, beauty, the diet industry to name but 3 would all fade away and our daughters and granddaughters wouldn’t have artificial points of reference upon which to build their self-esteem. I think where I am going with this is ‘enjoy your body’. Use it every which way you can. Don’t be afraid of it or what other people think of it. There is nothing more rare or more beautiful than a woman being unapologetically herself; comfortable in her perfect imperfection. Self confidence comes from within, and that’s about changing your mental attitude not your waistline. Believe in yourself enough to never look back and wish you’d spent more time being unafraid.

Love Annette xx

Family life

By Jo Wright

Put your best paw forward! It’s time to take a tour of one of our beautiful surrounding villages with a well-loved Labrador.

J

oin our loveable family Labrador as he gets his paws around Pinchbeck. It’s a good job I’m a big dog – because Pinchbeck is a big village. ‘Look Otis,’ my human says as we drive past a huge supermarket, industrial units and modern offices, ‘this is where Pinchbeck starts!’ We keep going and park up in the village’s main street, where I leap out the car to let myself take in the view. A long road lined with grocery shops, a florist, butcher, barber, hairdressers and – what’s that lovely smell? Ah, a bakery. Delicious! My human tells me she might have to come back for another visit – but with her shopping bag and purse instead of her Labrador. I’m not sure I like the sound of that, even if she does promise to bring me back a bone from the nearby garden centre. Here comes an incline so up and over we go, four paws and two feet walking across the bridge above the railway line. The white water tower next to us is an impressive sight. What a big water bowl! There’s a nice friendly feel to Pinchbeck. The village hall looks busy and as I continue my canine wanders I also come across the library and community hub. It’s a lovely sunny day today, but I think Pinchbeck would be pretty whatever the weather.

The grass is mown, flowers are full of colour and the paths are so tidy. I get so enthralled sniffing and searching this space that is so new to me, that a friendly villager actually makes me jump! We continue our walk along the main road – past the church, chip shop and pub, and up to the vets. I hope all my four-legged friends have a speedy recovery. As we turn around and head for home, I realise my tail hasn’t stopped wagging all walk. Yep, for a Labrador like me, Pinchbeck is pretty perfect.

Until next time, your friend,

Otis

Look After Your Eyes

M

ost of us take our eyesight for granted, but imagine if you couldn’t gaze at your family or even navigate your way safely round the kitchen. There is much you can do to look after your eyes. For example, a well-balanced diet can protect against age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in older people.

Smell your eye make-up - You have probably never thought about bacteria lurking in your mascara and other eye cosmetics

of zeaxanthin and lutein. These vital nutrients help protect against age-related macular degeneration.

Eat sunshine-coloured foods - Make sure your dinner plate contains a splash of yellow or orange. Egg yolks and a wide range of orange or yellow vegetables, including carrots and squash, are good sources

Take a break - If you work long hours in front of a screen in artificial light, you are increasing your chances of becoming short sighted. Take regular short breaks away from the screen and walk around the office to exercise

Lucious Eyebrows Castor Oil - Castor oil is one of the most effective remedies to boost the growth of your eyebrows. It contains protein, vitamins, fatty acids and antioxidants that nourish the hair follicles and promote hair growth. Soak a cotton swab in pure castor oil and apply it on each eyebrow. Massage gently with your fingertips for 2 to 3 minutes. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes or overnight. Wash it off with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser. Repeat once daily for a few weeks until you notice improvement. Olive Oil - Olive oil is also good for your eyebrows. Being rich in vitamin E, olive oil can help your eyebrow hair grow faster and thicker. It will also help keep it darkhued. Massage your eyebrows with warm olive oil for 5 minutes before going to bed.

Leave it on overnight, then rinse it off with warm water the next morning. Alternatively, prepare a mixture with 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil and a few drops of honey. Apply it on your eyebrows and massage for a few minutes. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then wash it off with warm water. Egg Yolk -The hair of the eyebrows is made up of keratin protein, and egg is a great source of protein. Thus, it can help improve the health of your hair, which in turn will make your eyebrows thick. Break 1 egg and separate the yolk from the white part. Beat the yolk until you get a thick, creamy consistency. Apply it on each of your brows with a cotton swab. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash it off with cold water. Use this protein treatment once or twice a week until you are satisfied with the result.

your eyes as well as your legs. Cool your feet - Make sure that the vents that deliver cool air into your car are aimed at your feet rather than at eye level. Specialists warn that the dry air from car air-conditioning systems sucks moisture out of your eyes, which can cause discomfort and put you at greater risk of eye infections and even ulcers.

Get Your Senses Checked Out

T

here is no embarrassment, or shame attached to visiting an optician, or the dentist, at least once a year, even though the latter can be terrifying for some people, so why do we rarely consider having a regular hearing test? The tests are often free of charge, painless and more informative of your overall state of health than you might contemplate. Your ears, unlike teeth and eyes will rarely give you much trouble apart from an occasional annoying ‘blockage’ usually caused by a buildup of earwax, will often endure the slowly diminishing quality of hearing loss without detection. It is so easy to compensate by turning up the volume of the TV, or radio, or stereo, or alarm-clock, even resorting to ‘reading people’s lips’, when listening to speech becomes impaired. So, what’s stopping you? Many opticians offer an additional hearing check service so get booked in today! www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 23

Eye examination at Molsom & Associates saves Spalding woman’s life after Optician finds a tumour in her eye After experiencing some problems with her vision, a routine eye examination saved the life of local woman, Georgina Harrison, after her Optician found a tumour pushing on her retina.

M

s Georgina Harrison, age 53, visited her local independent optician Molsom & Associates in Spalding after experiencing problems with her vision. Her Optometrist Mr Ian Price became concerned after carrying out an eye examination, he advised Georgina to undergo a retinal scan of her right eye within the practice. using Topcon 3D OCT technology he studied her retina and was stunned at the discovery. Mr Price referred her immediately to the Royle Eye hospital in Boston. Within weeks of her visit to Molsom & Associates, Georgina was in the Royal Hallamshire Eye Hospital in Sheffield, where she was diagnosed with a very rare, and life threatening, malignant tumour which can metastasise and spread to the liver, lungs and bones via the bloodstream. Georgina said: “I’d been experiencing difficulties using the electronic till and spotting stock at work and staff were becoming impatient with me. I also found it difficult to read music, books and to do crochet and close work at times. I also felt my eyes took a while to “get going” in the morning!” “I had an eye test during the previous 18 months and everything was normal but after going into a shop one day and losing a section of my main vision I decided to go to my local independent optician to have my eyes checked. I would like to thank Molsom and Associates for saving my life! Sounds dramatic but it is true.” In less than 2 months after her eye exam at Molsom & Associates, Georgina was undergoing eye surgery using Proton Beam therapy which enabled the tumour to be target precisely reducing the risk of tumour cells surviving the radiotherapy treatment. “Although I have lost a lot of vision, due to the tumour and the treatment, in my right eye my peripheral vision is still spot on! I’ve recently been back to Molsom and Associates and I have ordered some varifocals. I’m really looking forward to reading a book or two very shortly!”

“I urge everyone to attend regular eye tests! I had no clue what Ocular Melanoma was until I was diagnosed and I am supported by OcuMel UK www.ocumeluk.org an excellent charity supporting “Omies” (people with Ocular Melanoma) and their loved ones, as well as raising awareness. Without the excellent staff at Molsom my prognosis would not be anywhere near as good. I have had first rate support and service from their friendly and knowledgeable staff ” Molsom & Associates Optometrist Ian Price said “ This is a rare occurrence, but I am so thankful that Georgina came to to see us when she did! As she says these tumours can be aggressive. As part of an eye examination, Opticians can pick up many general health problems as well as eye disorders, and like all health issues the sooner these are seen - the better the prognosis. Any Optician can see

these tumours, so although I was just doing my job, I am proud to have helped Georgina”. Molsom & Associates added “By visiting local schools presenting talks and workshops, providing local health support groups with talks and sponsoring local events, we are always trying to educate everyone from young to old on the importance of eye health. Regular eye exams are vital to detect any changes early, as we did in Georgina’s case. We will have a collection pot for the charity Ocumel at the practice, helping to support their fund raising and work to support people suffering from Ocular melanoma.” The experience has encouraged Georgina to hopefully re train as a nurse in the coming year. Sharing this story Georgina and Molsom & Associates are hoping everyone reading it will ensure both themselves and their loved ones book for an eye examination.

t s a o T h c n e r F y r Ricotta Strawber sing up some of days and u r e m m u s r fo t Perfec berries! w a r t s d e k ic those hand-p Ingredients:

• 1 large egg, beaten • 300ml milk • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 4 slices of thick bread • 2 tbsp butter • 50g ricotta • 2 tbsp honey • 100g strawberries • Leaves from 2 sprigs of mint

Method: 1. Whisk the egg, milk and vanilla together in a flat dish so that you can coat the bread slices. Leave to soak for a couple of minutes. 2. Melt 1 tbsp of butter over a medium heat and cook two slices of the bread until golden on both sides. 3. Use the rest of the butter to cook the other slices. 4. Halve the toast and spread each slice with ricotta. Drizzle over the honey and arrange some of the strawberries over the top. 5. Decorate with mint and serve.

Raspberry Jam Homemade preserves conjure up warm days picking fruit with our friends and family by our sides. With the sun beating down and punnets at the ready why not recreate a summers day by making some jam now and cracking it open in the autumn?

Ingredients • 1kg Fresh Raspberries • Juice of 1 Lemon • 1kg Jam Sugar

Method 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Make sure you have saved up enough jars to fill with your jam and sterilize these before you start. Put a small plate in the freezer to chill. Place half of the raspberries into a preserving pan and add the lemon juice. Mash the berries down using a potato masher and then leave to cook gently for about 5 minutes. Using a sieve, drain the juice off the berries and firmly work the pulp through the sieve with a wooden spoon until you are left with just the seeds. Tip the juice and the pulp back into the preserving pan and stir in the sugar.

7. 8.

Bring it to the boil and allow to bubble for 5 minutes. Remove the mixture from the heat and pop a little of the jam onto the plate from the freezer. 9. Push your finger into it – it should wrinkle and look like jam. If it doesn’t then you need to boil it for a further couple of minutes and test again (don’t forget to put the plate back in the freezer). 10. As the mixture is cooling, give it a little stir. 11. Pour into the jars and seal. 12. The jam will keep unopened for one year and make sure you store in the fridge once opened.

Pollywiggle Cottage Pollywiggle Cottage is a charming 3 bedroom Victorian cottage in the popular coastal village of Heacham available for short breaks and holidays. Just over an hour’s drive away it really is the gateway to the beautiful North Norfolk coast.

T

he cosy cottage built in 1882 sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms (king, double & bunk) plus we have a cot for a baby. We welcome well behaved dogs and have tried to supply everything you will need for babies and pets - travel cot, high chair, baby monitor, dog crate, dog bowls etc. On sunny days the south facing enclosed garden is a great place to relax with table and chairs as well as a BBQ. Or on those winter nights you can warm up in front of the open fire. There is also complementary wifi & parking to the rear of the property. All prices include a full clean before and after your visit as well as linen and towels - you will just need your bikini and beach towels! The Local Area Heacham became popular as a seaside resort with the Victorians due to the opening of the railway between King’s Lynn and Hunstanton in the early 1860s. North Beach has an amusement arcade, a cafe and a fish bar. There are also beach huts available for hire. Both beaches have public toilet facilities. South Beach has its own cafe, which serves meals throughout the year and sells beach goods. It’s a 20-30 minute stroll along the promenade into Hunstanton where you will find an array of restaurants, amusements, fair rides, SeaLife Centre, swimming pool and much more. The beaches at Heacham are situated on the east banks of The Wash; this means it is one of the few beaches in eastern

England where the sun sets over the sea instead of over the land. Many say Heacham village is the largest village in the UK and has all the facilities you would need on your doorstep – Tesco Local, McColls, Indian restaurant, Fish and Chip shop, cycle hire, 3 pubs and the Coasthopper bus route stops just 30 seconds from the front door if you do not wish to travel by car to see all the sights of the coast. Pollywiggle Cottage is always well reviewed and every tripadvisor rating is either 4 or 5 stars! Here’s what our guests say: “Stayed for 4 nights in April with 13 month old daughter and our dog. Perfect little cottage in a handy location. Well equipped for babies, with high chair, travel cot, video monitor, black out blind and even toys! Shops, bakery, butchers, Indian/Chinese/ chippy takeaways all in walking distance as is the beach. Handy to have its own parking (all be it a bit tight for two cars). Nice safe enclosed garden for the dog and dog bowls & blankets provided. We even got amazing weather! Thank you.” “We have just returned from another wonderful weekend at the beautiful Pollywiggle cottage. We found the owners really have thought of everything you may need to make the stay feel like home from home. If your traveling with children they have all the essentials and more! There’s a toy box in the children’s room which kept our 3 entertained for hours. A baby monitor, stair gates, blackout blind, bed

rail.. you name it, it’s there! They even have the fur babies covered too with dog bowls, crates and balls! The cottage is very clean and tastefully decorated. We loved having the open fire roaring away on a cold winter evening! It really is the perfect place to warm up and relax with a glass of wine after a chilly afternoon walking on the beach. There are a few pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance. We can highly recommend the Spice garden for an evening meal and the Bushel and Strike for a pint. The Bushel is very dog friendly and has a children’s playground. We would highly recommend a stay here and hope to return in the summer.” “Second stay at the property. It’s just so cosy and lovely. Great location and the owner is very friendly and helpful. Perfect for a break away with your dogs. Quiet comfortable and clean :-) planning to go back next year too. Love it Thanks for the goody bags too much appreciated and really made it extra special!” “Lovely cottage with all the cosy extras (log fire/ blankets/ lighting ) with modern touches. Very clean and well-kept and with a parking space at the rear, with plenty more road parking close by. It is within walking distance of a number of pubs and beaches. Sleep 2 x Doubles and Bunk (3 Bedrooms) Welcoming for all ages and 2 fur babies.. (dogs). I will be returning again in the new year. ong Sutton was historically in the wapentake of Elloe in the Parts of South Holland. The Friday market dates back to the early 13th century when the town was a prosperous trading centre. [citation needed] By the mid-14th century, it was considered to be one of the richest communities in Lincolnshire. Prosperity continued for it’s residents into the 20th century, helped by the arrival of the railways. In the 1950s eleven trains

would daily transport passengers and local produce to and from the town.[citation needed] Long Sutton railway station on the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway closed in 1959 when passenger services were withdrawn. lots of different types of flooring and not necessarily knowing the key differences between them. Another benefit is the use of professional fitters. Fitting carpet, vinyl, laminate and LVT is not as easy as it looks (especially laminate and particularly LVT) and if you choose to do it yourself and make a miscalculation or end up damaging your flooring then you may find yourself having to buy all over again. And if there are any problems they can be sorted by the fitter which means no stress for you. Long Sutton Flooring are particularly proud of their service, offering benefits that perhaps others might not, such as moving your furniture out of the way and back again after the floor is laid and offering free measuring and free estimates. What is the OCT health scan? Optical Coherence Tomographers (OCTs) work a little like an ultrasound for the eye. It shows us beyond the retinal surface into the tissue behind – allowing us to spot abnormalities up to 5 years before a traditional test. It can spot early signs of: • Diabetes • Glaucoma • Age-related Macular Degeneration • Hypertension Why have an OCT health scan? • Spot issues sooner – an OCT scan allows us to detect and monitor any changes to your eye health up to 5 years earlier than other methods of eye screening. • See more – we can instantly show you the 3D High Definition images of your eyes.

• Build a more complete picture – all your scans are stored on your records. So, from test to test, we can compare your OCT images, and quickly pinpoint any changes in your eye health. The OCT examination is completely non-invasive and painless. Nothing touches your eye at all. It only takes a few seconds The health scans are particularly important if you are over 40 or have a family history of diabetes, macular degeneration or glaucoma. We would encourage you to have regular OCT eye scans, since the sooner early signs of change are spotted, the more vision can be preserved. EARLY DETECTION MEANS FASTER TREATMENT LOOK AFTER YOUR EYES! Phone and book your OCT scan today at Coakley Opticians.

Since leaving school 35 years ago Trevor has been in the trade and proudly opened his own shop in 2001. More recently he has been joined by his son and so is able to leave more of the frying to him and be the face of

the business. Trevor commented on the importance of fresh, local produce; “We have always tried to sell locally produced potatoes, our skinless cod comes from Grimsby which is frozen at sea also as with haddock, plaice and pollock. This ensures everything we sell is as fresh and tasty as possible.”

How to clean bins and wheelie bins Cleaning household bins and wheelie bins is an unpleasant but sometimes necessary task!

Cleaning bins with a hose Lay your dustbin on its side, so its innards are easily accessible. Rinse it out with a hose (on its most powerful setting) or a pressure washer and blast off encrusted and sticky bits of muck. Wearing rubber gloves, empty the mess down the drain (you’ll have to pick out any big bits and thrown them away separately). Then spray your bin with detergent. Anti-bacterial washing-up liquid is fine, or use a bleach mixed with water, or a proprietary bleach or disinfectant spray. You can sometimes use your pressure washer to do this – otherwise just empty some into the bottom of the bin and turn the hose on it. Leave it to work for a couple of minutes, then rinse from the top down. Drain the bin, then leave to dry. To neutralise odours, pour a small amount of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) in the bottom of the bin. Getting rid of maggots Where there’s muck there’s flies, the saying goes. And where there’s flies, there will, in warm weather, be maggots… and you need to get rid of them before they spread. Take out the maggot-y bin bag, spray

the outside and around the top with a bleach or disinfectant spray and rebag it, tying tightly at the top. Pour almost-boiling water over any maggots that remain in the bin to kill them. Then disinfect your bin as above, using bleach, to destroy any remaining eggs. (This may discolour a brightly-coloured bin but it’s better to be hygienic.) Keeping bins clean Put a cover over all food left out in the kitchen, so flies can’t lay their eggs on it. Deter flies with fly papers, fly spray (but be careful when food is around), and/or put fly screens over doors and windows. Before putting food packaging in the bin, rinse clean of blood and other biological substances. Before throwing meat or fish scraps, bones, disposable nappies, animal waste or cat litter in the bin, put them in biodegradable bags or wrap securely in newspaper. Before putting the bin bag in the dustbin, tie the top tightly to prevent anything getting in or out. In hot weather, empty your indoor bin more often, and try to find a cool place to store your outdoor wheelie bin.

Household Tips If you don’t have a waterproof belongings bag for swimming, hide your valuables inside an empty suntan lotion bottle for safekeeping at the beach. Keep your cleaning sponges (and make up sponges) super clean by zapping the germs in the microwave. Put them on high for two minutes and that should do. It’s a super simple one but if you get your breakfast things set up the night before then you’ll have a calmer morning and feel a much less rushed start to your day. 40 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Fencing Your Boundary! Choosing a good fence is important to the exterior design of your house and its functionality as well. One of the main reasons why people put up fences is for privacy although there are many other factors as well. The privacy factor is also crucial to the kind of fence that you choose. Here is a simple guide to the different types of fences: Aluminium fences Aluminium fencing is quite popular and inexpensive. It can be designed to look just like most of the other fencing material. However, aluminuim is not very strong and does not provide enough security as you may look for in a fence. It is not recommended for use in severe weather. On the plus side, aluminium is very easy to maintain. Wood fences Wood is one of the oldest fencing materials and has stood the test of time due to its aesthetics, durability and great functionality. It still remains one the most popular types of fencing because of the amount

of privacy it provides with its wide panels and great height. It is very attractive since it can be carved and painted into any of a variety of colours. Wood fencing has a warm and welcoming feeling without being too expensive. With good maintenance, wood fencing can easily last as long as the lifespan of your home. Wrought iron fence Wrought iron fences are great if you want some funky designs on top of your fence. Wrought iron is a strong and beautiful fencing material. They are great as a security measure since they are virtually indestructible. Wrought iron fencing

have only one disadvantage, like wood fencing, they also require constant upkeep to prevent discoloration and rusting. You will need to repaint your fences at least once every two or three years. Chain link fences Although they do not add much privacy, chain link fencing is one of the functional fencing material out there. Chain link fences are very popular in applications where functionality overrules aesthetics, although they are easy on the eye too. Chain link is cheap, durable, easy to maintain and repair and suitable in a variety of applications such as pet enclosures, park enclosures, pool

enclosures, school and playground fencing among many other functions. Secure Your Home during the Holidays With schools now broken up we are in the midst of a summer of fun. However, it’s unfortunately also a fruitful period for burglars and opportunist thieves. If you are planning to be away during the summer before you leave just double check that all keys and valuables are well hidden from sight, and leave a few lamps on timers so that when night falls it will look like you’re home, deterring any potential thieves who prey on empty properties over this busy social weekend. If you already have an intruder alarm, remember to let a trustworthy neighbour know that you’re away and if the alarm goes off to call you or a family member whom you might have left your key with. You may be close to your neighbour, like many of us are, and then feel safe to leave a spare key with them ‘just in case’. If you don’t feel like you have a neighbour whom you can trust, then you might want to consider an alarm monitoring service, whereby a professional security provider will monitor your alarm.

Hyundai i30N 2.0 T-GDi 275PS N Performance PROS ‘N’ CONS

à Fast à Fun à Handling à Looks à Badge image

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS

(2.0 T-GDi 275PS N Performance – as tested)

S

South Korean motoring giant, Hyundai, has created a brand new ‘N Division’, which has sparked the awesome new i30 N. The regular variant gets a 251PS petrol turbo unit, but it’s the 275PS Performance Package i30 N that I was handed the keys to. This car gets bigger brakes to scrub the extra speed off. At the front of the model, there’s also a no-nonsense electronic differential, which decides all sorts of smart things to keep the front wheels biting into the bitumen. The i30 N’s chassis is electronically damped - and the arrangement has been designed to supply all-out precision. At the same time, the system doles out a good dose of refinement, meaning comfort is not in short supply. What’s more, the car has state-of-the-art electronic dampers at each corner that empower it to do things some other challengers can’t even consider - both on tarmac and on track. The i30 N also belts out a banging tune of its own. Seriously, the car sounds incredible. And when the pedal is pushed to the metal in third gear, all sorts of crackles and pops fire from the tailpipes. What’s most extraordinary, however, is how the i30 N handles, turns and comes to a halt. The steering is outstandingly precise, and the car doesn’t feel edgy at the rear whatsoever. This is some feat, considering that it takes the Hyundai a mere 2.2 turns from lock to lock. The handling is unreservedly razor-sharp,

even in ‘Normal’ setting. Things get spicier in ‘Sport’ mode, and there’s a ‘Custom’ choice in which you can alter the car’s specific characteristics. The i30 N also has, perhaps unsurprisingly, an ‘N’ mode. This is only meant for using on a track really, so the ride quality is stiff and hard-nosed. But if you’re in the right frame of mind and the weather and road conditions are okay, then it is a grin-inducing system. The throttle map and exhaust become zestier, while the dampers become more unyielding. Furthermore, any interruption from the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) is played right down. Out and out performance is heavy-duty from the 2.0-litre petrol turbo powerplant in all settings. It never feels too much, though - and the sixspeed manual transmission hops through the cogs satisfyingly. The hot Hyundai’s straight-line talent is blisteringly impressive, but it is the i30 N’s chassis that blows you away. This is the feature that remains indelibly etched on my mind. It’s my ‘take-away’ memory of the car if you like. Sure, this isn’t the fastest hatchback ever made – but the point is, not many cars in this segment will have such an excellent chassis set-up. And, here’s the occasionally thorny bit – the price. Well, with this Hyundai there

à Max speed: 155 mph à 0-62 mph: 6.1 secs (est) à Combined mpg: 39.8 à Engine layout: 1898cc four-cylinder petrol turbo à Max. power (PS): 275 à CO2: 163 g/km

Price: £27,995

is no issue. The South Korean firm knew it had to chip away at the main competition to give itself authority in the hot-hatch market. Therefore, an on-the-road price-tag of £27,995 is more than respectable, bearing in mind how capable the 2.0 T-GDi 275PS N Performance is behind the wheel. Moreover, the car is jam-packed with kit, and it feels well screwed together.
