Welcome to the April issue Hooray….it will soon be the Easter holidays, I know how many parents look forward to the breaks from school and the rush of a daily morning routine and we’re not far away now. Hopefully as we go into April we will be saying goodbye to the rain, ice and winds of winter and hello to bright and cheerful Spring days. This month we have been away for a weekend exploring Oxford and the Cotswolds, I love a city break and it’s one area that we’ve never spent much time in and what a gorgeous part of the country it is. If you find yourself in this area make sure you stop off in the picture postcard village of Bourton-on-theWater, it’s a quintessentially British village! In the UK we have so many treasures here that we often overlook. In this issue we are definitely thinking about all things Easter and Spring! We have teamed up with The Caravan and Camping Club to give you guidance on getting back to nature and starting your caravan or camping journey as well as this they are sharing their top tips for the seasoned caravanner. April is stress awareness month, if you’re feeling more anxious than usual then please check out our guide to reduce stress. Now is the time to get out into the garden and start work on getting it prepared for the season and finally Tim is test driving the new Ford Kuga. For fans of Truckfest check out our competition on page 24 to win free tickets. All that’s left for me to say is Happy Easter and have a great month!

NEWS Brothers Organise Race Night in Aid of Age UK Age UK Boston & South Holland were approached last year by twins Robin and Richard Harrison who attended our World Cup event to raise some money by holding a race night for their 65th birthday. Richard and Robin both Boston born and bred, grew up in Fishtoft and wanted to put something back into the local community. They played football for local teams and are avid Boston United supporters. The event was held on 11th February at the Conservative Club and was supported by many local businesses, as well as friends and family raising a fantastic £2200. A further £1000 came from Barclays Bank. Also on the guest list were two former class mates from primary school who were celebrating their 65th birthday on exactly the same day. The boys also did a collection in the local Matalan store and raised £32. On the night they raised money by a raffle, stand up bingo and auctioned of a Nottingham Forrest signed Football which had been donated. The money raised will be spent locally. Age UK Boston & South Holland do not send any money to head office or abroad. We will be using a portion of the money to set up a Men’s group in Boston where men can get together for a chat, play games, take part in quizzes, play snooker and darts and various other pursuits and outings that would interest them. If you would be interested in hearing more details of the group please get in touch on 01205 364161 or visit our website www. ageukbsh.org.uk.

Surprise gift ensures dogs travel in style Dogs and staff at a South Lincolnshire rescue centre will travel in style thanks to the surprise gift of an eye-catching new van by loyal supporters. The van, which features photos of two of Jerry Green Dog Rescue’s success stories, was donated by the PawPrint Charitable Trust to celebrate a 20-year association between the two charities. Jo Hickson, manager at Jerry Green Dog Rescue’s South Lincolnshire Centre in Algarkirk, said: “This donation came right out of the blue. It was a wonderful surprise. PawPrint also offered to pay for signwriting the van and asked me to choose two dogs to feature on the sides of the vehicle. “Poppy is a beautiful black lurcher who had a tough start in life but now has a fantastic home at the seaside. And terrier Ginny originally came to us as a stray but

is now flourishing with her loving new adopter. Both dogs are real characters and like to be centre of attention, so they were a natural choice!” People in South Lincolnshire will have a chance to see the striking images of this lovely duo as the van will be used for bringing dogs into rescue care, vet and home visits, picking up gifts of food and bedding, as well as for fundraising events and activities. Jacqui Bell, CEO at Jerry Green Dog Rescue, said: “PawPrint has been one of our most loyal supporters since 1997 and we are delighted it chose to mark our 20-year association in this generous way. It will make a huge difference at the South Lincolnshire Centre.” The Peugeot Partner van was purchased from Taylors of Boston and the signwriting was added by Espin Signs of Scunthorpe.

Jobs advice on offer Looking for a job in South Holland? Then come along to a free event in Spalding happening soon. The South Holland Jobs Fair takes place on Tuesday, April 4 and offers visitors the chance to speak to over 30 employers and training providers from a range of industries who are currently recruiting in the district. The popular annual event is being held at the South Holland Centre in Market Place between 10am - 2pm and is organised by South Holland District Council’s Economic Development Team in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions. Representatives from several sectors including the food industry will be on hand to discuss current vacancies as well as offering information about a wide range of jobs. Visitors can get career advice and learn about the skills needed for different roles. Helpful hints will also be offered to anyone who is thinking of starting their own business or looking to benefit from training and development opportunities.

Cllr Nick Worth, portfolio holder for economic development, said: “The Jobs Fair has been running for seven years now and is widely recognised as a very helpful event – last year around 400 people attended and we received plenty of positive feedback. “As usual there will be a wealth of advice

and information for anyone looking for work or who wants to learn more about different careers and opportunities.” For more information about the South Holland Jobs Fair contact 01775 764895 or email economicdevelopment@sholland. gov.uk.

Bag it and Bin it! Irresponsible dog owners are being reminded to ‘Bag it Bin it’ as part of a new campaign launched by South Holland District Council. The authority’s Dog Warden Rachel Thompson has been provided with stencil signs and spray cans and will be spraying temporary brightly-coloured ‘Bag it Bin it’ logos on paths in areas across the district that have received high reports of dog fouling. This is in addition to her normal patrols. The initial focus will be on paths and passageways near schools and other community areas. The campaign is being promoted through new signs and stickers, helping to raise awareness of the importance of bagging dog poo and putting it in bins. Cllr Anthony Casson, the council’s portfolio holder for public protection, said: “The issue of dog fouling in the district concerns residents and is something we are looking to tackle. “Bag it Bin it is all about raising

awareness of the need for dog owners to act responsibly and properly dispose of their pet’s mess. “The message sprayed on pavements looks striking and shows we are taking action. We hope that together with the signs and stickers it will persuade irresponsible dog owners to change their habits. “Similar schemes have worked in other areas, with councils finding that sprayed messages on pavements shames irresponsible owners and leads to a reduction in fouling.” South Holland District Council would like to remind residents that anyone who does not clear up their dog’s mess may be committing an offence under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 and the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and can be liable to a maximum penalty of £1,000. Dog owners are advised to take plastic bags with them on walks and dispose of them in any red dog bin or refuse bin.

Ayscoughfee Aviation Flying fanatics will be in their element at a series of events at Ayscoughfee Hall over the coming months. On the last Sunday of each month between April and September, the historic Spalding venue is hosting an aviation-themed talk by a special guest. Each event is limited to 40 people only, so anyone interested in attending is advised to book early to avoid missing out. The events kick off on Sunday, April 30 with Peter Hardy from the National Memorial Arboretum presenting ‘A world Class Centre of Remembrance’. Peter is a long standing volunteer guide at the National Memorial Arboretum and will outline the history and development of the site and provide a visual tour of some of the memorials, explaining the symbolism and stories behind them. Sunday, May 28 sees Alan Taylor and Syd Marshall return to speak about the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Their session will focus on the flight’s formation and subsequent history. On Sunday, June 25 Anthony Knight from the Typhoon Entente Cordiale Trust will give a talk on the history of the Hawker Typhoon aircraft. The plane is a forgotten hero of World War Two and Anthony will focus on its technology, design and exciting stories of its pilots. On Sunday, July 30 Professor Trevor Kerry presents ‘The Falgate Talk’. Donald Falgate was a Grimsby man who quickly volunteered for service in World War Two.

He joined an Australian squadron based at Waddington and was a bomb aimer, and a master bomber. Despite this hazardous role, he survived a complete tour of duty and then went on to forge a peace-time career in the RAF. Kev Rumens will talk about his career as a Modern Day Bomber Pilot on Sunday, August 27. Kev has flown the Vulcan XH558 as well as Tornados and he may also touch on his commercial flying of the Dreamliner. On Sunday, September 24 Alastair Goodrum will focus on ‘Women in Aviation’. His talk will feature a selection of female aeronauts who have made significant contributions to the world of aviation during the past 200 years.

he success of the newly opened library in Holbeach, creating a genuine service hub with the post office and pharmacy like most things takes time to negotiate and plan, but this has certainly paid off. When I first contacted Lincolnshire Co-operative over two years ago, I was impressed with their willingness to work with the local community and find innovative solutions to entice more people into their store and increase footfall on the High Street. What we see is a modern facility which is easily accessible with parking and a bus stop outside. A friendly and welcoming atmosphere that encourages people to look round the facility and go into the library section which they may have felt uncomfortable about before. Holbeach library has seen just short of 100 new members in the first two weeks which is outstanding. A lot can be learnt about the future of our High Streets right here. The downside is that it has left a hole in the middle of the High Street, both ends look good but to be fair the middle looks a mess.In reality these two particular shops will probably be filled quite quickly, but the rest is a bigger challenge. I have recently been in conversation with both the District and County Council about the regeneration challenge. As most of this area is a conservation area and identified by Heritage Lincolnshire as a ‘Heritage at Risk’ area, conversations have been had between the County Council and Historic England about applying to become a Heritage Action Zone. The District Council would need to apply for this but would have many benefits for the town. Historic England work with local partners and will focus their help and resources on places such as Holbeach, to bring them to life, focussing on sustainable economic development, regeneration and community life. A Heritage Action Zone approach will harness Historic England’s expertise and resources to help. There is also the potential to role this out in other towns as well, but I will be putting this at the top of my priority list over the coming months as there is the opportunity here to harness specialist

expertise, finance and monies from 106 agreements to make a real difference. There has been much debate about unitary authorities over the last month or so. Unitary Councils put simply provide all the services that our County and District Councils currently provide. There are currently 55 unitary authorities in the U.K. with populations ranging from 40,000 – 500,000. There are clearly savings to be made simply by reducing the number of chief executives, management teams and councillors. There would however have to be some evening of Council tax as currently some Districts charge far more than others, so there would be winners and losers. You would not want them to be too large, so that they remain locally accountable. My own belief is that one unitary for the County is simply too big and would effectively replace the County Council by another name. This is unlikely to have the support of government or District Councils. You then have the options of two or three covering the historic County of Lincolnshire, which I suspect would be more amenable to most. Will it happen? If I was abetting man I would say yes, mainly because County Council finances will be unsustainable in another three to four years and will therefore force the issue. Some may remember the old Holland with Boston County Council – what goes round, comes round! Nick

couldn’t do enough to help with gluten free options. Usually very limited choice at other venues but lots to choose from and really nice. Surroundings lovely. Would definitely go again and try Sunday lunch. TRIPADVISOR, FEB 2017 The popularity of this restaurant continues to grow as more people hear about it so I struggled to get a table (to be fair it is the season where everyone goes out for a special Christmas meal) but thankfully they managed to squeeze me in for Sunday lunch. Yes it was very busy - however that didn’t stop us from getting great service from the staff. I started with the Ham Hock Tureen, which I ordered because I enjoyed it so much last time I was here. For my main I had some really good rib of beef - I was surprised when I was asked how I would like it. I am used to just getting it how it is carved so it was a pleasant surprise to

be able to ask for it medium rare. This was served with a selection of buttered vegetables and home made cauliflower cheese. I am not usually a fan of cauliflower cheese but this has converted me as it had a rich cheddery flavour - not like the bland watery offerings that put me off this dish many years ago. For dessert I tried the sticky toffee pudding as that felt the most fitting for the weather - proper comfort food. One thing to note was the great wine suggestions from the staff. I had the tempranillo that they suggested for the beef, it complemented it very well. The young girls who looked after us were bright and bubbly throughout and made sure we were happy with everything throughout the meal. I look forward to going back in the new year. Advice

Have you been treated Unfairly? If you think a company has broken the law or acted unfairly: You might be able to report them to Trading Standards and or the Financial conduct authority. What should you report to Trading Standards You should report a company to Trading Standards if, for example: • they misled you into buying their products or services • they sold you unsafe or dangerous items • they didn’t carry out the work properly, for example, their work left your home in a dangerous state • they sold you fake or counterfeit items • they pressured you to buy something you didn’t want to buy • they sold you a car that wasn’t ‘roadworthy’ (it would cause danger if it was on the road) How to report a trader to Trading Standards Call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline and tell them you want to report a trader to Trading Standards. The consumer helpline will assess your problem and pass it on to Trading Standards if it’s appropriate. Citizens Advice consumer helpline Telephone: 03454 04 05 06 Textphone: 18001 03454 04 05 06 Open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Closed on bank holidays. Calls to the helpline cost up to 9p per minute from a landline. If you’re calling from a mobile, it’ll cost between 3p and 40p per minute - if you have inclusive minutes, it’s the same as calling a landline. An adviser will answer your call as soon as possible, usually within a few minutes. Once you’re speaking to an adviser your call should

take an average of 8 to 10 minutes. Be prepared to tell the adviser details of the problem and the company’s name and address. You can also use an online form or write to the consumer helpline - make sure you mention that you want to report a trader to Trading Standards. What Trading Standards do Trading Standards will decide whether to investigate your problem. If they do, they might contact you for more information and evidence. Depending on what they find out, they might take action to stop the trader from acting unfairly. For example they might educate the trader about the law or take legal action against them to stop them from trading completely. Even if Trading Standards don’t contact you, they might use your evidence to take action in the future. Further to our recent building development, the children are making the most of the new school library at lunchtimes. The ECO club have been busy revamping their bug hotels in the nature area. As part of our DT subject this term, Mrs Darker’s year 1 class have been creating homes and shelters with special Lego packs. This is a much loved activity and allows them to use their imagination. The children in Reception had a wonderful day at Fineshade Woods in Corby. Dressed in their warm clothes and wellies, they completed the Gruffalo Trail, saw the Gruffalo sculpture and even had story time! A fun day was had by all, especially as the sun shone for them! As part of their ‘Land Ahoy’ topic, Year 2s have worked hard all term on making the perfect boat for a pirate. They first looked at which materials floated and which sank and then investigated waterproof materials. They

Ayscoughfee Hall School Years 5 and 6 packed their bags and headed north for the first ever school residential trip to Edinburgh. Blessed with fantastic weather and a hotel that surpassed itself with its food, children and staff alike threw themselves into the historic and cultural riches that the city had to offer. All agreed it was an amazing experience and one that was enjoyed by everyone lucky enough to go. Shrove Tuesday was celebrated with gusto, with several classes making their own pancakes and races in the playground. There were no casualties, except for the pancakes, but the debris was eaten by seagulls, so nobody minded!

During World Book Week the Juniors took part in an Interhouse Book Quiz and the older children volunteered to read stories to the younger ones in the library at lunch time. Kindergarten and Years 1 and 3 visited Spalding Library where they were made very welcome and enjoyed the chance to look around and take part in book related craft sessions. We now look forward to our first DT Interhouse competition (design and make a structure from straws strong enough to balance a crème egg!) and Shakespeare Week, when the Juniors will be taking part in a day of workshops based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The post is open to organists from all over the country and Miles Mclauglan was up against fierce competition. Having being selected on the strength of his written application, Miles spent the day at Sherborne School at the end of February, where he was interviewed and auditioned by the Director of Music, James Henderson. When Miles (from Wisbech) takes up this post at the end of August, he will become an integral part of the school community, living within the town and spending term times as a member of the academic Music department staff. The scholarship will enable Miles to focus on developing his skills as a both a soloist and accompanist. He will assist with training the choir for weekly services in Sherborne Abbey. Miles’ ambition is to win an organ scholarship at Oxford University in the following academic year.

spent an enjoyable afternoon together making their own boats from tin foil and paper and, when tested, every single boat floated on the water. No one had made the Titanic! The children in Years 3 and 4 have enjoyed dressing up as Romans and taking part in a range of activities including making Roman broaches, making bread, reconstructing the Roman Forum and making Vindolanda tablets. Great fun was had by all.

Weston Hills CofE Primary School The academic year is now more than half way through, and we are looking forward to Easter. Our whole school production – an adaptation of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table was hugely successful with an afternoon and two evening performances. Thanks to Mr. Gernert from Act II Theatre Company for coming in and working with children. Willow Class (Year 4/5) children have had a trip to Peterborough Museum as part of their history topic this term and had a lovely day. Holly Class (Year 3/4) had a very successful trip to Flag Fen. Year 6 pupils had a fantastic afternoon at PGL in Caythorpe participating in team building activities. Children in Oak Class (Year 1/2) have had a trip to Moulton Mill followed by a visit to Abbey Care Home. During Science Week we had Kites for Schools in for the day making kites with the children and flying some of their own amazing kites. Over the next term children in Year 1, Year 2 and Year 6 will be taking part in Phonics, KS1 and KS2 SATs respectively. Elm Class (Year 5&6) will be going on a trip to Stibbington, and Year 6 children will be attending the Church Schools Festival in May. Director of Music, Mrs Jane Missin said, “Miles has a very clear sense of purpose, and has worked with determination to realise his dream of developing his skill as an organist at a top level. I am immensely proud of what he has achieved and this appointment is richly deserved. I have no doubt that Miles will grow enormously as a musician during the year and that he will be well placed to achieve success in his application to Oxford University. “

Keeping Safe when Caravan & Camping Family Life Staying safe on the campsite It’s very rare to have an accident or safetyrelated incident on a campsite and we’d like to keep it that way. Here are a few pointers to help keep you and your family safe while you’re on site.

Carbon monoxide (CO) can kill • Never take a barbecue into a tent, awning, caravan or motorhome. Even a cooling barbecue gives off plenty of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO), which can kill. • Never use a fuel-burning appliance to heat your tent or awning. Gas and kerosene heaters – unless they are permanently fitted in a caravan or motorhome – should only be used outside. Stoves and barbecues are designed for cooking not space heating. • Never run a gas, petrol or diesel-powered generator inside a caravan, motorhome, tent or awning. Make sure fumes from a generator don’t blow into your unit or anyone else’s from outside either. • Don’t cook inside your tent or awning • Don’t use any other gas, charcoal, liquid or solid fuel appliances inside a tent or awning. Gas-powered fridges and lamps, for example, also need plenty of ventilation to prevent them

producing poisonous carbon monoxide. Tents and awnings aren’t generally designed with this in mind. • Consider using a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm, provided it is suitable for the condition you intend to use it, check with the supplier/ manufacturer, though it should never be used as an alternative to the precautions above. • Always have gas appliances in your caravan or motorhome serviced regularly.

Fire Safety At most campsites tents, caravans and motorhomes are pitched at least 6m apart to prevent the spread of fire. It is recommended you have a fire bucket full of water outside your unit, especially on campsites where no fire-fighting equipment is supplied.

Tips for the Caravan Season Local caravan maintenance company BL Caravans give their top tips for safe caravanning this season: For many caravan owners, this is the time of year when caravans are being prepared for their first outing of the year. A caravan should be treated no differently to your car when it comes to regular maintenance to help keep you safe. Having an engineer complete a service on your caravan means that a 60 point check is made, which includes running gear, gas system, 12v and 24v electrical systems, water system and a damp test. It is essential to check your running gear as caravan tyres tend to deteriorate when stood. Did you know that tyres are date stamped? VOSA and NCC recommend that tyres are replaced every 5 years. Another early season problem occurs

18 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

when water has been left in the system. If this has frozen and expanded, it may have cracked taps or damaged water heater tanks. Carbon Monoxide is a silent killer. Flexible gas pipes are dated and need regular renewal and gas seals degrade. Ensure your gas is checked by a qualified engineer. For your own safety, a carbon monoxide monitor is recommended as equally important to a smoke detector. A bit of time spent on maintenance of your caravan helps to make stress free holidays.

Looking after gas and other fuels Calor containers We take gas, petrol or other liquid fuel on a campsite is to burn it for cooking, heating or lighting so it makes sense to look after it carefully at other times, so it doesn’t burn at the wrong time in the wrong place. Always follow the supplier’s instructions on storage and transportation of fuel. Containers should be of an approved type. Fuel containers should be transported and stored upright and positioned carefully, so they cannot accidentally become disconnected or fall over and are less likely to leak. When you are using any gas or liquid fuel appliances, it’s vital to have adequate ventilation. Don’t forget – many caravans and motorhomes will have a gas fridge working all the time. Calor Gas Recall: An important notice for campers who use CalorLite cylinders: Calor Gas is issuing a product recall with immediate effect on all 6kg CalorLite cylinders made between 2008-2011 inclusive. All such cylinders must be returned to a local CalorLite stockist immediately.

April is Stress Awareness Month

S

tress Awareness Month has been held every April, since 1992 and during this annual thirty day period, health care professionals and health promotion experts across the country will join forces to increase public awareness about both the causes and cures for our modern stress epidemic. What you can do to help with stress Be active Exercise won’t make your stress disappear, but it will reduce some of the emotional intensity that you’re feeling, clearing your thoughts and letting you to deal with your problems more calmly. Take control There’s normally a solution to any problem. If you remain passive, thinking, ‘I can’t do anything about my problem’, your stress will get worse. That feeling of loss of control is one of the main causes of stress and lack of wellbeing. The act of taking control is in itself empowering, and it’s a crucial part of finding a solution that satisfies you and not someone else. Connect with people A good support network of colleagues, friends and family can ease your work troubles and help you see things in a different way. If you don’t connect with people, you won’t have support to turn to when you need help The activities we do with friends help us relax. We often have a good laugh with them, which is an excellent stress reliever. Have some ‘me time’ Here in the UK, we work some of the longest hours in Europe, meaning we often don’t spend enough time doing things we really enjoy. We all need to take some time for socialising, relaxation or exercise. Try setting aside a couple of nights a week for some quality “me time” away from work. By earmarking those two days, it means you won’t be tempted to work overtime. Challenge yourself Setting yourself goals and challenges, whether at work or outside, such as learning a new language or a new sport, helps to build confidence. This will help you deal with stress. By continuing to learn, you become more emotionally resilient as a person, it arms

you with knowledge and makes you want to do things rather than be passive, such as watching TV or looking at a screen all the time.” Avoid unhealthy habits Don’t rely on alcohol, smoking and caffeine as your ways of coping. Men more than women are likely to do this and is called avoidance behaviour. As a rule women are better at seeking support from their social circle. Over the long term, these crutches won’t solve your problems. They’ll just create new ones. It’s like putting your head in the sand, it might provide temporary relief, but it won’t make the problems disappear. You need to tackle the cause of your stress.

If you don’t have time to volunteer, try to do someone a favour every day. It can be something as small as helping someone to cross the road or going on a coffee run for colleagues. Try to be positive Look for the positives in life, and things for which you’re grateful. People don’t always appreciate what they have, try to be glass half full instead of glass half empty. Try writing down three things that went well, or for which you’re grateful, at the end of every day. Accept the things you can’t change Changing a difficult situation isn’t always possible. Try to concentrate on the things you do have control over. If your company is going under and is making redundancies, for example, there’s nothing you can do about it. In a situation like that, you need to focus on the things that you can control, such as getting your CV up to date, looking at cutting monthly expenditure and then looking for a new job.

Help other people Evidence shows that people who help others, through activities such as volunteering or community work, become more resilient. Helping people who are often in situations worse than yours will help you put your problems into perspective. The more you give, the more resilient and happy you feel. Work smarter, not harder Working smarter means prioritising your work, concentrating on the tasks that will make a real difference. Leave the least important tasks to last, accept that your in-tray may not be empty at the end of the day. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 23

K

Forever F.I.T.

im Penney is a local business woman who has been with Forever Living since April 2009. Kim decided to join Forever after receiving great results from drinking Aloe Gel, a health drink packed with vitamins, mineral and amino acids which support the body’s energy levels, digestion, skin, joints and immune system to name but a few! It really helped her with painful joints and she could see how it would help many more people she knew.

Kim has developed a local and global customer base, all who love the products but the recent launch of the F.I.T. weight management program including C9 and F15 have seen the business go to another level. The FIT program is based around Aloe Gel, a vanilla or chocolate protein shake, supplements and a healthy eating and exercise program to give your body everything it needs to start you on the road to a happy healthy lifestyle. Most people start with the C9, a nine-day kick start and go on to F15 Beginner through Intermediate to Advanced depending on their goals. Kim and her partner Jem are loving the program. They started on 4th Jan and can really see improved fitness and energy levels and a more toned physique. It’s simple to follow with delicious recipes and fitness videos. I feel great releasing all

those happy hormones at the start of the day! Before F15 I had never really been into regular exercise routines, preferring to be outdoors walking, but these are great and so easy to integrate into daily life. Forever is the world’s number one grower of Aloe Vera and a global brand leader in wellbeing products. In May we celebrate 39 years in business, 24 years in the UK. We’ve expanded into over 150 countries with a $2.8b annual turnover, so there must be something to drinking a daily shot of Aloe. Marketed around the world in the iconic yellow bottle it helps millions of people enjoy better health - PLUS it comes with a 60-day money back guarantee and is a member of the DSA!

Generally, the longer the 0% period, the bigger the fee.

The 3 Balance Transfer Golden Rules Getting the right card’s only half the job. Once you get it, you need to use it the right way. a) Repay at least the set monthly min, or you can lose the 0% deal. The same can be true if you bust your credit limit. b) Always clear the card or shift again before the 0% ends, or rates jump to the representative APRs, typically 18% to 20%. c) Don’t spend or withdraw cash on them, it’s rarely at the cheap rate. Instead, shift your debt to these cards, then put it away somewhere not to be used.

30 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

A final thought on this. The best way to clear debts is to repay as much as you can and be wary of only repaying the minimum repayments. That’s dangerous. Minimum repayments are set to only just cover the interest, so repayments drop as debt drops, prolonging the debt period. For example, with £3,000 on a typical card, repaying minimum repayments it’d take you 27 years to repay, costing £4,000 in interest. Now you may say to

me “I can’t afford to pay more”. Yet in the first month the minimum repayment would be about £70, and if you fixed your repayment at that rather than letting it drop, you’d clear the debt in five years. Yet if you’ve multiple debts, order them in terms of interest rates, and throw all spare cash at repaying the one with the highest rate (as its growing fastest). Just pay minimums on the rest. Once that’s clear, focus on the next most expensive debt and so on.

Tastes so good... A traditional Easter, springtime treat, why not bake a batch to share with friends, neighbours and colleagues? Delicious served either warm with butter or just plain, at any time of day.

Hot Cross Buns INGREDIENTS FOR 12 SERVINGS

Dough 500g Strong Bread Flour 7g Easy bake yeast 275ml whole milk 50g Butter (unsalted, cold, diced) 1 medium beaten egg 75g Unrefined golden caster sugar 1 ½ tsp salt Toppings 75g Sultanas 2 tsp Mixed Spice 100g Plain white flour 50g Mixed peel 50g Apricot Jam 2 medium egg yolks

• MIX: Boil the milk in a pan, remove from heat then add the butter. Leave to cool until warm. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl and then add the milk and beaten egg, stirring with a wooden spoon. • KNEAD: On a lightly floured surface, knead the mixture for approx. 10 minutes. RISE: Lightly grease the large bowl, place the dough in the bowl then cover with a clean cloth and leave to rise until doubled in size – this could be up to two hours dependent on how warm the room is. • SHAPE: Sift the mixed spice over the dough, then knead in the sultanas and mixed peel. Slice into 12 even sized pieces, roll into balls and place, well-spaced, on a lined baking tray. • PROVE: Cover the dough again, and leave until doubled in size again. Preheat oven to fan 180C/200C/Gas 6. • BAKE: Score a cross on top of each bun

Strawberry Yoghurt Lollies INGREDIENTS

150g (5oz) tub of strawberry yoghurt 150ml (1/4 pint) milk 10ml/2tsp strawberry milkshake powder Need a small lolly mould with handles

1. In a bowl or a jug, use a large spoon to blend the yoghurt, milk and milkshake powder together unl smooth. 2. Pour the mixture carefully and evenly into six small lolly moulds. Add the handles, and place into the freezer overnight to set. (Note- these can be stored for up to a week in the freezer but ensure they are well covered.) 3. To remove from lolly moulds, fill a bowl with hot water, then slowly dip the base of the moulds for about ten seconds to loosen, then wobble handles to remove the lollies. 4. Serve immediately and enjoy!

with a sharp knife. Mix the plain flour with a tbsp. of water at a time to form a paste. Use a piping bag to pipe crosses on the buns on the cuts you made. Bake the buns for around 11-15 minutes or until golden. • GLAZE: Melt the jam, sieve then brush apricot glaze over buns and leave to cool on a wire rack.

What’s in Season? Vegetables: asparagus, broccoli, jersey royal new potatoes, lettuce & salad leaves, purple sprouting broccoli, radishes, rocket, samphire, spinach, spring onions, watercress, wild nettles Fruit: bananas (Windward), kiwi fruit, rhubarb Herbs: basil, chives, dill, sorrel Meat: lamb, wood pigeon Fish: cockles, crab, langoustine, lobster, plaice, prawns, salmon, sea trout, shrimp, whitebait

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

South East Lincolnshire Local Plan 2011-2036: Publication Version is being published on 10th April 2017 for a 6 week consultation period that will run until 22nd May 2017 The South East Lincolnshire Local Plan covers the whole of the local authority areas of Boston Borough Council and South Holland District Council and will guide development and use of land in the area up until 2036. As we are now at the final stage of plan preparation this consultation will be different to previous ones undertaken in that the comments made must relate to whether the Local Plan is ‘sound’ and complies with legal and procedural requirements. A guidance note will therefore be available to view on our website: southeastlincslocalplan.org, which sets out advice on how to respond. The Publication Version Local Plan includes sites to be allocated for different types of development, such as housing and employment, in order to meet the area’s needs, as well as identifying those areas of land which must be protected from development - perhaps because of their historic or environmental importance. It also covers a wide range of other planning related matters in the form of policies, against which planning applications can be judged.

36 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

We will also be publishing a number of other documents for consultation including the Policies Map, Sustainability Appraisal, Statement of Consultation as well as other supporting documents. The documents will be available to view on our website (address opposite), in the area’s libraries, mobile libraries and the council offices in Boston and Spalding, during normal office hours. An online consultation portal will also be available at: southeastlincslocalplan.org/consultation from the 10th April 2017. Cllr Peter Bedford, chairman of the South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee, said: “We have taken on board the comments you have made so far about how you would like to see Boston Borough and South Holland developed. A lot of work has gone into its production, and it cannot be stressed enough how important this will be in influencing where we build up until 2036. You now have a final chance to comment on the plan, before it is submitted, to help shape the future for generations to come.”

You can comment on the consultation documents: n Preferably online via our dedicated consultation portal at: southeastlincslocalplan.org/consultation n By emailing a completed comment form (available to download from our website or collect at locations listed to the left) to southeastlincslocalplan@sholland.gov.uk n By post using the comment form to: South East Lincolnshire Local Plan, South Holland District Council Offices, Priory Road, Spalding, Lincolnshire, PE11 2XE

Comments made must be received by 5pm on 22nd May 2017 All comments received will be submitted to the Secretary of State and considered as part of an independent Examination in Public by a Planning Inspector. For further information, please contact the Local Planning team at: southeastlincslocalplan@sholland.gov.uk or call :

Cleaning a Driveway

D

riveways attract oil stains, mud, and dirt through normal wear and tear. While it is easy to sweep and remove debris, getting out stains can be much tougher. There are many options for cleaning your driveway such as pressure washing, using items already in your household, or chemical cleaners for those really tough stains. If you’ve got a pressure washer then Prepare your driveway. Remove any loose materials, cars, dirt, or stone from your driveway. If your driveway touches any doors or walls, cover them with a tarp or some painter’s tape. This will protect them from any debris that may fly around while you are pressure washing. • Check to see which end of your driveway is the highest and what direction the water will flow while

you are washing. • It is best if your water is absorbed by your lawn. If the water drains into a storm drain, you will be introducing chemicals into your local water supply of course making sure any chemicals won’t damage your lawn!

Treat any Stains. Oil and antifreeze stains are the stains you will most likely have on your driveway. Before you use a pressure washer, apply a degreaser to the stain. Allow the degreaser to sit on the stain for five to 10 minutes to soak up the stain. • Use the degreaser at full strength for older stains that have penetrated your driveway. Dilute the degreaser with water for newer stains. • Once you have allowed the degreaser to sit, scrub it into the stain using a stiff brush.

Set up your pressure washer. Pressure washers generally come with both low pressure and high pressure nozzles. If you’re

cleaning a brick driveway, do not use the high pressure nozzle at all.

Apply the detergent to your driveway. The instructions that come with your pressure washer will tell you what type of detergent you should use. Only use detergents that have been formulated to use with a pressure washer. Use the low pressure nozzle to apply the detergent to your driveway. Point the nozzle downward and move back and forth over your driveway. Allow the detergent to sit on your driveway for 15 minutes. • Do not allow the detergent to dry on your driveway. If you notice that is getting dried out, apply some water to your driveway. • Do not add bleach to your pressure washer because the bleach may cause damage to the washer. • Start at the higher end of the driveway and move in the direction that water flows. Rinse your driveway. After fifteen minutes, use the high pressure nozzle to wash away the detergent. Make sure you set the pressure washer to rinse mode. Use the same pattern you used when you were applying the detergent. • Be sure to wash away all of the detergent. • Pay extra attention to the heavily stained, dirtier areas of your driveway.

Creating Compost Setting up a compost area is always a good idea. You can recycle your house and garden green waste, and when the compost is finally ready you can add fertility to your soil for free and maybe grow some vegetables? What could be better! Compost can be made in a heap on the ground, but it is more efficient and tidier if you use a compost bin. You can get wooden or plastic bins from garden centres, or a quick internet search for ‘DIY compost bin plans’ will also give you ideas for home made versions. Composting requires a roughly 50:50 by volume mix of grass, weeds and vegetable peelings (called ‘greens’

in composting speak) which are high in Nitrogen; along with dry paper, straw and card (known as ‘browns’ in composting speak) which are high in Carbon. Keep a container in the kitchen to collect vegetable peelings and save egg boxes, loo roll inners and other papers to turn into compost. Grass clippings need to be added cautiously and with care – not too many at one time and make sure they’re always mixed in with paper stuff. BUT it doesn’t really matter what you make compost in! As long as there is air, water and the right mix of compostable material it will produce compost ...eventually

Spring Garden Preparation

W

ith recent arrival of Spring, we hopefully can now leave behind the dark, dreary days of Winter. With pleasant weather on the horizon, and the number of sunny days increasing, it’s once again time to get serious about gardening. The harsh frost of winter may have left your garden looking limp, lifeless and in need of some attention, so here’s 7 important steps to help you create the perfect spring garden.

Lawn Preparation Throughout March and April, we highly recommend that you rake your lawn vigorously to help remove any moss, leaves and debris. The build up of moss during Winter may have caused some drainage issues, so ensure that you spike your lawn to help improve its drainage. Mower blades should be kept fairly high and you should only feed your lawn using nitrogen based fertilizers For more information, read our post on how to create the perfect lawn.

Pruning Early Spring is often the ideal time to prune and deadhead any damaged shrubs. Plants such as Clematis, Hydrangeas and Fuschias, that are expected to flower during mid-summer should

be pruned now. Roses and fruit trees should also be considered, as well as any shrubs that are due to bloom during the winter months too.

Planting & Perennials

Tidy Beds & Borders

Spring is often the perfect time to stock up on seeds, plants and garden equipment. It’s also the perfect opportunity to divide any perennials that have been growing for several years to ensure that they continue to flower well. Dig a layer of manure into your beds and borders, to help maintain strong growth. You’ll then need to begin sowing those summerflowering plants such as Lillies, Gladiolus and any hardy annuals.

Preparing your flower beds and borders is another step to creating the perfect garden this spring. Using well-seasoned manure or compost add a layer to help the soil prepare for planting. You should also hoe the beds quite heavily to soften the soil, but it’s always best to avoid digging them up completely.

Spring Vegetables Many herbs and vegetables can be started during the early days of Spring. We strongly advise that you only plant vegetables outdoors when the weather is completely frost free. In the meantime, keeping them in the greenhouse or under a small polytunnel should be sufficient.

Weeding Weeding should also be high on the agenda over the next few months. Now that the ground is getting warmer, the chances of encountering a pesky weed or two dramatically increases. Arm yourself with a high quality weed killer before they get out of hand.

Cleaning, Staining & Repairing Finally, the first few weeks of Spring are also the perfect time to keep abreast of cleaning and maintaining your outdoor space. Sweep, scrub and pressure wash your patio or driveway, and if you’ve got decking, select a dry day to stain and treat its wooden surface. Oh, and don’t forget about cleaning your garden tools either. Removing your tools of rust, dust and dirt will not only help to prolong their life expectancy, but they’re also better for the health of your garden. Don’t forget to get any tools sharpened! Spring is also the ideal opportunity to clean and repair your all weather garden furniture. Whether it’s a gazebo or metal furniture set,

What to Plant in April You can plant gladioli and acidantheras now. If you have any herbaceous perennials then you should thin their roots. Sow hardy annuals in situ and prick off those sown earlier. Remove any dead flowers from narcissus and other spring flowers. As the weather begins to get a little milder sow new lawn areas, but make sure you protect them from birds. Mow your lawn at medium height. Plant evergreen coniferous trees and shrubs now. You should apply mulch to roses and trim over lavender. Trim all winter-flowering heathers and remove dead flowers from rhododendrons. Prune early flowering shrubs and cut down hardy fuchsias to soil as new growth appears. Prune newly planted bush fruits. Use nets to protect flowers on fruit trees from any lingering frost. If the weather is dry then water the newly planted fruits and spray against pests and diseases (do not spray if the trees are in full flower). If you have a greenhouse then sow seeds of outdoor tomatoes, melon and courgettes. You should space out growing plants and watch for pests and diseases. Bedding plants should be moved into cold frames.

40 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

If you have a vegetable patch then you should start sowing of radish, lettuce, peas and beans. You should also sow your main crop of carrots. Cauliflower and calabrese should be planted out raised in cold frames. You can plant late potatoes and earth up your early ones.

Ford Kuga PROS ‘N’ CONS

huania Location: Poland and Lit

T

he new Ford Kuga is a delight to drive. I should know, as I spent 24 hours in one motoring from Warsaw in Poland to Vilnius in Lithuania. And let me tell you, Eastern Europe’s roads are not as kind to cars as Britain’s are – and that’s saying something. Many of the roads in Poland and Lithuania are peppered with potholes, broken up by the odd stretch of motorway, but often with roadworks. The new Kuga made light work of the potholes, due to its excellent suspension and well-padded seats. The only real grumble came from the car’s petrol engine. My Kuga was fitted with the 1.5-litre Ecoboost engine, in four-wheel-drive 182PS guise. It returns 38.2mpg and 171g/km of CO2, and it’s quite noisy when you put your foot down for overtakes. That said; the melodramatics are soon over, and the car is happy to settle into a less raucous cruise when it sees the open road ahead. Inside, the Kuga’s cabin is cleaner – in the sense that there aren’t as many buttons littering the dashboard. An electronic parking brake has also joined the party. Ford’s new Sync 3 system is responsible for doing away with many of the switches. It consists of a large touchscreen and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. It also enables you to control functions using voice instructions. While it’s really a face-lift, the new Kuga does have some new stuff going on underneath the bonnet, too. There is a new 120PS 1.5-litre TDCi diesel unit with front-wheel-drive, which delivers up to 64.2mpg and 115g/km of CO2. If you prefer more clout, there is a 2.0-litre TDCi engine with 150bhp, and you can choose to have it with all-wheel-drive or frontwheel drive. This variant will return up to 44 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

60.1mpg, while emitting 122g/km of CO2. If you want even further power, there’s an Intelligent All Wheel Drive version with 180PS. This does 54.3mpg on average and CO2 emissions are135g/km. The 1.5-litre Ecoboost petrol engine stays, and comes in two states of tune – 120PS or 150PS. Finally, as mentioned earlier, the fourwheel-drive 182PS variant of this petrol engine, driven here, returns up to 38.2mpg and emits171g/km of CO2. All-wheel-drive Kugas, like the one I drove, also include semi-autonomous Perpendicular Parking tech. This helps you to park, without using your hands, in tight spaces alongside other vehicles. I found this particularly useful when trying to park up in a congested area of Warsaw – as you do. The new Kuga can be bought for £20,845 in entry-level Zetec trim, and the Titanium model is priced from £24,245. The ST-Line model is on sale from £25,845, while the more luxury oriented Kuga Vignale comes in at £30,745. The Kuga is an affordable car, if bought at the lower end of the range. It comes well equipped and has enough space for a family of four. The car is comfortable and makes mincemeat out of long trips. The six hours I spent travelling from Warsaw to Vilnius would be gruelling for any car, but the new Kuga coped well, and, more importantly I did, too. Everything in the new Kuga is simple to use, and there are lots of handy storage compartments for things such as cash for toll booths, and cup holders for bottles of

water and mugs of coffee. The boot is also a good, square size, and you can load things in easily due to the low load lip. All in all, the new Ford Kuga offers good value for money. It is certainly worth buying or leasing if you need a main car that isn’t too big, yet is large enough to cope with a family of four. In four-wheel-drive guise it also turns into a useful tool for the winter months – something many parents, like me, will find invaluable on frosty school-runs using ice-rink-like rural routes.
