We offer good value for money and products you can’t buy elsewhere, such as pictures beautifully crafted with crystals. This is our first non-textile ‘home store’, and we are dedicated to stylish, interesting and great quality items. “We are really happy to be open at Springfields

and really feel that we can offer something different and interesting to shoppers. We’re also confident that we can grow as a business here.”

Race Is On For New Sports Complex

The aspiration to open a new sports complex in Spalding in 2012, the year of the London Olympics, could take a big step forward this month. On Tuesday 7th December South Holland District Council Cabinet gave the go-ahead for £10,000 to be spent on drawing up a business plan. The council’s corporate director Andrew Petcher said he believed a business case for the scheme could be drawn up very quickly because a great deal of work had been done three years ago when the scheme was first considered. “The project was put on hold at that time because of the economic downturn”, he explained however that “by a twist of fortune, it is now partly because of the downturn that we now have an opportunity to revive the scheme; but we may have only a brief period in which to act.” South Holland District Council deputy leader Coun Nick Worth emphasised that the business case will be based on the project being cost neutral so that there is no increased cost to the local tax payer. The original scheme was for a replacement centre to be built on the

edge of town but it ceased being viable when development land prices fell. “It was a council priority to replace the sports facilities and it has remained a priority, but on the understanding that the economic situation had to be right”, Mr Petcher said. Cllr Worth said the council hoped to consider a plan for a new centre being built at Castle Field, the location favoured by many who took part in the big consultation exercise three years ago. He answered criticism that money had been spent on refurbishment work at the existing centre by pointing out that this work had been essential to meet customer expectations in areas like the changing rooms and had been financed through business rates discount and not through council tax. “At the moment we are concentrating on the detailed business plan”, Cllr Worth said. “Details of the new centre itself have still to be drawn up, but a great deal of the work that’s already been done will still be relevant.”

Lincolnshire Empty Homes Project Fed up of seeing homes that are empty, and wondering what is being done about them? Worry no more, a new initiative set up between South Holland District Council, North Kesteven District Council, Boston Borough Council, City of Lincoln Council, East Lindsey District Council and West Lindsey District Council will enable people to find out more. With the recent launch of National week of action for empty homes by the charity ‘Empty Homes’, The Lincolnshire Empty Homes project are getting the message out to residents about what they can do to support the initiatives. Predominantly concerned with privately owned homes that have been stood empty for 6 months or more, the project will enable people living in the South Holland District to enquire further about homes that are empty in their area.

A lot of properties are empty for legitimate reasons, and the Council appreciate that renovations and sales take time. The Empty Homes Project will not focus on all empty properties; however they will look at what can be done about problematic properties, and where the owner has no intention of returning a property to use. It will also offer support to owners who want to do something with their property and may need pointing in the right direction. If a resident wishes to buy or sell a property they can now access a match-making service which will help the purchaser and owner/seller meet and discuss options that will mean the property will no longer be stood empty, creating an eye-sore for

passersby. Councillor Amanda Puttick, Portfolio holder for Housing said “This is a great opportunity to bring some of the empty homes in our district back to use and is a positive step forward for our district.” If you are interested in finding out more about the service simply visit www.lincsemptyhomes.org.uk.

Advice

Should You Be

Getting Help With Your Housing Costs? More and more people are going to be struggling to aff ord their essential housing costs, such as rents,  mortgages and council tax, as the recession bites.

D

iane Clay, Manager of South Holland CAB, says that they are  fi nding that many people are not claiming benefi ts to which  they are entitled.  “There seems to be a very common misunderstanding that you  can’t claim any help with your council tax, or any other benefi ts, if you  own your own home or if you are working”, she says. What is Housing Benefi t?

Housing Benefit is a benefit, administered by the local authority, for people on a low income to help them pay their rent. You may be able to get Housing Benefit if you are on other benefits, work part-time or work full-time on a low income. You cannot get Housing Benefit to help with the costs of a mortgage or home loan. If you are an owner-occupier, you may be able to get help with your mortgage interest through Income Support, incomebased Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Pension Credit. Housing Benefit does not help with the Council Tax, but if you are on a low income you may be able to get Council Tax Benefit to help pay your Council Tax. To get Housing Benefit you must pay rent. It does not matter if your landlord is the council, a housing association or private landlord. You can also claim Housing Benefit if you rent a room in a hostel, or are a boarder. You can claim it if you share a flat or a house and can get Housing Benefit as a joint tenant or a sub-tenant. There are a few exceptions, such as not being eligible if you rent from a close relative, which you may need to explore further. You can only get Housing Benefit if you are responsible for paying the rent for your home, or live with your partner who is responsible for the rent. Only one member of a couple who live together can claim Housing Benefit. You must also live in the accommodation for which you are claiming Housing Benefit.

What is Council Tax Benefi t

Council Tax Benefit is a benefit for people on a low income to help them pay council tax. Like Housing Benefit, it is paid by your local authority. If you are entitled to Council Tax Benefit, your council tax bill is reduced. Remember to check that you are paying the right amount of council tax. You may qualify for discounts, instead of or as well as council tax benefit, because you live on your own, or a reduction because you are disabled. If you have a ‘severe mental impairment’ such as Alzheimer’s disease, or if you are under 18, you don’t have to pay council tax at all. If you have to pay Council Tax, you can claim Council Tax Benefit as long as your capital and income are low enough. If you live with your partner, only one of you can claim Council Tax Benefit and your income and capital will be assessed together. Even if you own your home or are working full time, you may still be entitled to help. You must be living in the UK to claim Housing and Council Tax Benefit. If you are from overseas or have recently come to live in the UK you may have difficulty claiming the benefit, depending on your immigration status.

Get help!

If you are not sure about your right to claim benefit, you should consult an experienced adviser, for example, at a Citizens Advice Bureau or at your local council offices. At CAB we can calculate your entitlement to these benefits, but we will need to know details of your household, your income and your capital, as all these have an effect on your entitlement.

Pension Credit, without making a claim!

We also wanted to flag up a new initiative by the Pension Service, which may cause concern to some elderly people. The Pension Service is looking at new ways to reach pensioners who may be eligible for Pension Credit by paying a small group of people without them making a claim!

10

SIMPLY SPALDING  www.simply-spalding.co.uk

From 15 November, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is running a pilot scheme in which it will pay an estimated amount of pension credit to 2,000 people without them first having to make a claim. The amount will be based on the DWP’s records of people’s financial circumstances. The DWP has said it will never ask anyone to pay back any payments it makes under the scheme. The DWP has set up a Pension Credit Estimate Team to oversee this scheme. People taking part in the trial can call the team free on 0800 587 8924. Lines will be open from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm, Monday to Friday. The DWP will send a letter to people included in the scheme to notify them of this. It will do so three to four weeks before their first payment. People who do not want to receive pension credit without making a claim can contact the Pension Credit Estimate Team. There is more information about receiving pension credit without making a claim on the DWP website at www.dwp.gov.uk and on the Directgov website at www.direct.gov.uk.

Reflexology deals with the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which are believed to correspond to all organs and parts of the body. It is a unique method, using the thumb and fingers, usually performed on the feet but in some cases also on the hands and ears. A practitioner will work the reflex areas, which may help to relieve stress and tension; improve the blood supply to all

Getting fit f r the new year! By Kate Gibbard

Christmas is over and it feels like you’ve overdone the  mince pies and pudding. Now is the time to beat those  post-holiday blues and burn off  the excess calories.

Easier said than done, I hear you cry?

W

ell, with a bit of determination and encouragement, you really can get fit and lose those extra pounds. To give you a helping start, we’ve put together some ideas. But first, here is a statistic that should kick start you into action: According to research, on average you consume 6,000 calories on Christmas day. Now, to burn off 6,000 calories you would need to do roughly: • 1715 minutes of walking (over 28 hours). • 2143 minutes of cleaning windows (over 35 hours). • 858 minutes of football - that’s playing, not watching! Your age and weight would have an effect on these figures, and they’re only approximations, but they certainly give pause for thought. If you’re feeling really brave, why not check out the Food Standards Agency’s website www.eatwell.gov.uk? Their healthy diet section has a useful calorie calculator that shows you how much exercise you need to do to work off a certain number of calories. There is also lots of information about healthy eating and eating well. Whether you want to lose weight, get fit or just tone up in time for your summer holiday, there are lots of fun and cost-effective ways to get started.

Your diet There are many types of diets out there - from the Atkins diet to fixedmenu diets. But if you don’t want to get bogged down, why not just make an effort to eat a healthy balanced diet? When you reach for that packet of crisps or chocolate bar, why not swap it for a piece of fruit or a healthier alternative? Not only will this

help you take more nutrients into your diet, but you’re also helping yourself to achieve that all important 5-a-day portions of fruit and veg. Think about what you’re eating; make healthy choices when you shop. If you want to look at following a specific diet, talk to a qualified nutritionist or diet specialist for professional advice.

But exercise is boring! We’ve all used this excuse before but exercise really doesn’t have to be a chore. If jogging round the park or hitting the treadmills isn’t your thing, why not pick an activity that you enjoy or that you’ve always wanted to try? Salsa classes, yoga, swimming, pilates (not just for women!), weight training (not just for men!) aqua fit, martial arts - even rock n roll lessons if that takes your fancy! The Department of Health recommends that adults should do at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times week, so the trick is to do something you enjoy.

Getting fit Get motivated to move If you find it hard to stick at something, why not ask a friend or group of friends to join you? It’s much harder to back out of something if you’ve got other people to keep you motivated.

I’m too busy to exercise! If you’re pushed for time, you just need to get creative with the time you have. Can you walk your children to school rather than drive? Perhaps you can walk part of the way? Do you really need to drive to the local shop? If you work in an office that has a lift and stairs, make sure you take the stairs. The housework has got to be done at some point, so why not put more effort into it? Scrubbing, mopping and hoovering vigorously will soon get you out of breath! While you’re waiting for tea to cook, switch on some music and get exercising. Don’t take your car to the local car wash, get outside and wash it yourself. Why not check out the opening times of your local gym? You’d be surprised how early they open - you might find you can fit in a session before work. Or maybe you could go in your lunch hour?

Happy New You! Christmas is a time to eat, drink and be merry. The New Year is a time for resolutions. If one of your ambitions is to lose weight, Dietcare can help. Do you gain weight easily? Do you struggle to lose weight? Around a quarter of adults have a slow metabolism; does this include you? Our diets are tailored to an individual’s metabolic rate and designed to speed it up using the foods that they enjoy. At our clinics you will be weighed and measured in private and your metabolic rate will be assessed. Personalised diets, advice and support are provided on a one-to-one basis with a qualified diet adviser. Telephone and email support is available in addition to weekly appointments, ensuring your success. If you have a hectic lifestyle and are unable to attend a clinic, we can offer you the same support on our postal or online course.

What are you waiting for? Book an appointment before the end of January and receive six weeks for the price of five.

Don’t Crash in the New Year

Adopting a healthy eating weight loss solution, making appropriate lifestyle changes and exercising within your capabilities is the real solution to permanently controlling your weight. Dietcare Weight Management has been helping struggling slimmers to lose weight successfully for more than 30 years. Thousands of slimmers cannot be wrong. By offering you tailored diets, one-to-one consultations, motivation, support and encouragement as often as you need, Dietcare can ensure you achieve the weight loss that you desire, healthily, quickly and without hunger. A maintenance diet is supplied once ideal weight is achieved, ensuring you keep that nice trim figure, permanently. A ‘crash’ diet borders on starvation, with a severe reduction in both calories and nutrients. The body goes into ‘famine’ mode and tries to conserve energy, resulting in the metabolism slowing down; this means weight gain is more likely afterwards. You are likely to feel hungry, irritable and lacking in energy as blood sugar levels fall. More seriously, you risk losing muscle and as the heart is a muscle, this can have dangerous consequences. So called ‘detox’ diets can also fall into this

category and there is no evidence that the body needs to detox. The body’s liver and kidneys are removing toxins 24 hours a day every day. Fad diets, which concentrate on one specific type of food, such as grapefruit or cabbage, can also cause problems, long term. These crash or fad diets can leave you feeling ill, weak and lightheaded, due to their low calorie and vitamin levels. Unless a diet is well-balanced with a mix of foods from all the food groups, such as proteins, mineral salts, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins, your body can be missing important nutrients causing more harm than good, long term. Slimming pills and potions have even more potential for harm, as so many dubious products are freely available over the internet. Even prescribed slimming pills have limited success. Dr Mark Porter, writing in ‘The Times’, suggests that pills are making the obesity crisis worse by offering a short term solution – unless you change your diet and lifestyle, the weight comes back again and you can end up even heavier than before. Why not call Jayne for a free metabolic rate assessment and lifestyle check, without obligation on 0845 1904313 or email jayne.s@dietcare-peterborough.com

f r the new year! Beating depression, stress and insomnia bernard griffey

Not only can exercise reduce the risk of health conditions like diabetes, blood pressure and arthritis, but it can make you feel better emotionally. When we’re feeling stressed or depressed, it’s easy to give in to comfort eating, which can develop into a vicious circle. However, exercise can help reduce your stress levels and improve your mood. Doing regular exercise is also a chance to escape from the pressures of everyday life and meet new people. By using up energy, you’re also helping yourself to a good night’s sleep.

Alternative therapies There is also the route of alternative therapies to help with getting fit and losing weight - from hypnotherapy to a range of complementary therapies. Weight gain can be related to many aspects of life, such as stress, depression, grief and much more. Alternative therapies can often not only help with the physical weight loss but the symptoms behind the initial weight gain. Always make sure you seek advice from qualified professionals only.

Weight Loss System dietcare The Virtual Gastric Band

The sad fact is that diets don’t work! How many times have you dieted and lost weight only to put it all back on again? The problem with diets is that they do not deal with the reasons why people over-eat in the first place and so as soon as you stop dieting you go back to your old habits and eating behaviours and before long all the weight you lost is back, and more! Using a combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Hypnotherapy we can help you change your eating habits forever! If you are really committed to losing weight then the Hypno-Band will enable you to achieve your goals.

New Year’s resolutions for your pet

The New Year brings the opportunity for a fresh start; a refocus on those things that are important to you – so that includes your pet, right? First thoughts for resolutions often turn to diet and exercise – most of us will have over indulged over the holidays, but when it comes to being a good pet owner there’s more than just diet and exercise to think about. So, here are Rooke’s top tips for giving your pets a better year!

Exercise Regular exercise not only provides great health benefits for your pet, but a simple daily walk can help a dog learn proper manners and it gives you quality bonding time with your pet. Not only that, it does you good too – win, win! Ensuring your pet is the right weight reduces the risk of heart and joint problems, diabetes, and a host of other poor health conditions. While some pets are unquestionably on the pudgy side, most people don’t realise their pets are overweight. Some diseases (Hypothyroidism, Cushing’s Disease, etc.) can cause weight gain, so it’s important to check regularly. Here are a few signs to look out for, which may tell you your pet is overweight • You can’t feel the ribs with gentle palpation of the sides • There’s no visable “waist” - an indentation in the area between where the ribs end and the hips begin • You can’t feel the hip bones when palpated with gentle pressure? • Your pet has trouble or is slow to rise or move about • Your pet reluctant to exercise • Your pet tires easily with activity

If you would like to check your dog’s weight, head in store to Rooke’s and use their weighing scales for FREE! General check-up Regular visits to the vet is the best way to stay ahead of potential problems. This year, book your pet in for examinations of teeth, heart/lungs and body condition. In the long run this will save you money as any problems can be spotted early, it’ll also save your pet suffering needlessly from complications of preventable problems. And, if you remember the regular check-ups, it gives your veterinarian a good “baseline” of information about your pet, so when something isn’t quite right the vet is able to compare against the information they have and determine exactly what is wrong.

Diet Just like us pets with a poor diet will pay the price. Feeding your pet low quality food can cause poor skin, a shabby coat, lost muscle tone and obesity. And it’s not just their main feed that’s important, consider the treats and tidbits they receive too. A diet rich in table scraps is not a healthy one and it can lead to problems. Just because your pooch gives you puppy dog eyes, don’t always give in!

Grooming With a fresh start you want a fresh pet! No one likes a smelly pet. Make sure you regularly groom your pet. Basic grooming activities should include – • A bath • Toe nail clipping • Brushing out the coat • Parasite control (predominantly flea and worms)

23 High Street, Spalding PE11 1TX Tel: 01775 713005 www.rookespetproducts.co.uk 18

SIMPLY SPALDING  www.simply-spalding.co.uk

This general care regime will not only make your pet more pleasing to be around, but it is much healthier for them too! If your pet has skin or coat problems that don’t resolve with regular grooming, see your veterinarian. If you need advice on the best way to cut your pet’s nails and the clippers you should use ask our friendly staff in store at Rooke’s.

be freezing with feet of snow before you return!

Love and attention Make sure this year you give your pets the love and attention they deserve. Too many pets are left outside in all kinds of weather, with very little human contact. And those inside are sometimes ignored for lack of time and busy human schedules.

Safety Every year hundreds of pets are poisoned in their own home! Make sure it doesn’t happen to your pet. Take a moment to assess the toxic chemicals used in your house and garden. Only use those that are necessary, make sure you follow all the safety precautions and store them somewhere your pet cannot access them.

Give your pet some tender love and care and they’ll return the favour by the bucket load! And as a result they can improve your health too by lowering cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, reducing stress levels and providing you with better mental health too.

Here are a few signs to look out for, which may tell you your pet has been poisoned • Muscle tremors or seizures • Vomiting and or diarrhea, sometimes with blood • Excessive salivation - drooling or foaming • Redness of skin, ears, eyes • Mental depression or excitement (may be easily excitable) • Bleeding (as with rat poison ingestion) • Ulceration or blisters of the mouth or skin • Excessive pawing at the mouth, excessive licking • Swelling (i.e. of a limb or face, commonly seen with insect bites and stings) • Elevated or depressed body temperature (elevations usually due to increased muscle activity -- tremors, seizures)

Volunteer

But it’s not just poisonous substances that pose hazards to your pet, think about their enclosure too. Make sure any fencing is secure and there is nothing your pet can get caught up or hooked on and choke. Also, if you go away to catch some winter sun or hit the slopes, make sure your pet isn’t stuck out in the weather while you’re away and have adequate shelter. It may not be too cold when you leave, but with the UKs unpredictable weather it could

Don’t just consider New Year’s resolutions for your own pets this year. There are thousands of animals in need of help each day. Why not volunteer your services and see what you can do to help. And if this is too daunting or you don’t have a great deal of spare time financial donations or donations of supplies is always appreciated. Every little helps! Why not consider volunteering at the Exotic Pet Refuge Visit www.exoticpetrefuge.org.uk or contact Pam on 01778 345923.

Cleaning There are a few aspects of pet care that people will avoid if they can, but they’re necessary to ensure our pets have a happy life, this includes: litter box scooping, garden clean ups, cage cleaning and fish tank maintenance. A clean environment for our pets is a healthy one! Poor sanitation can lead to behavior problems (i.e. litter box avoidance) and health problems such as skin infections and the spread of communicable diseases. So, don’t cut corners, make a resolution this year to clean for your pet regularly. Make 2011 the year you make good on your resolutions and keep your pet on the path of good health and happiness.

he light we use comes from two  main sources - natural and artifi cial.  Natural light comes from the sun  or from combustion sources, such as  fi replaces and candles. Artifi cal lighting  is generated by electricity and falls into  three main types; ambient, accent and  task.

Ambient lighting; is the general, everday lighting that you would normally use in the room Accent lighting; is used to create drama to a specific area or item Task lighting; provides targeted light enabling various tasks to be completed safely and comfortably

So what lighting do you use where?  Firstly consider what moods you want to be able to create in each room, for instance:The use of the room - is it used mainly during the day or at night? Is it an area for study or entertaining? Is it a room that has to cater for various tasks for both adults and children? If so, think about how you are going to style it to meet both demands The colours of your room – is your room light and airy? Or does it have a warm, cosy décor? Remember, pale colours reflect light, dark colours and material absorb light so be aware of how much daylight the room receives and for how long The positioning and density of furniture - play with your layout, think about the different uses you want from the room, if you have a large open space think about creating different zones. If there a specific piece of artwork or areas that you want to accenuate

When you are decorating your room don’t forget to give your lighting some consideration.   Diff erent lighting styles and techniques are available that can help boost your décor in  achieving that ‘wow’ factor, it can also help to enhance the nice aspects of the room, and  disguise the bad ones.  However, to create maximum impact, consider your lights carefully;  the fi ttings you choose for your room are the most important accessory, get it wrong and  the eff ect could be disasterous!   think about the best way to achieve this Size and positioning of windows - remember natural light can provide a variety of effects throughout the day; from making the room feel light and airy to subdued and tranquil so consider how much natural light your room gets and try to utilise it as much as possible

Next stage think about each specifi c  room and the tasks completed therein:-  Kitchens and utility areas require bright general lighting and task lighting for the countertops and preparation areas. So under cupboard lighting and strategically placed small lights are key. To help create atmosphere, lights in glass fronted cabinets or lights embedded into the kick boards are great additions, especially for those long, dark winter evenings Living rooms, dens, and family rooms require bright general lighting for the busy, hectic times during the day and early evening, strategically placed lamps for tasks such as reading and writing and then gentle, ambient lighting for when it’s time to sit back, relax and watch the TV

many different styles to choose from, but they fall into the three main categories:Decorative Lighting – usually ceiling lights and lamps which provide the visual focus of the room and the general lighting requirements Downlighters (Spotlights) – these can be recessed into the ceiling or wall mounted and can be static or moveable to allow the light to be focused Uplighters – these are flexible as they can be free standing (floor lamp) or wall mounted. They cast light onto the ceiling to provide a nice even glow. Wall washers – provide a focused even light on a wall area. Whatever your requirements, consider a selection of lights during the design. Remember lighting is an integral feature of your room design so choose wisely - style and colour is imperative if you want to achieve your desired look.

Bathrooms and dressing tables  require areas of stark light so detailed tasks can be completed, this can be achieved more effectively if the light fixtures are mounted on, above or on each side of the mirror. This will help to create maximum impact by keeping shadows at bay Bedrooms and dining rooms  may require some task lighting for late night reading or completing homework, but also think about adding some subtle yet sparkling lighting that can be adjusted to suit (or set) the mood! Lastly, time to decide on what type of artificial lighting to use. There are

Teaching Kids to

Family Life

Love Vegetables!

We all know vegetables are good for kids, but for some reason they just won’t believe us! Kids will find any excuse to keep from eating their veggies. They even get quite creative about places to hide them so we think they ate their vegetables! So what can parents do to make sure their kids are getting good nutrition that includes veggies? Just use a little creativity!

First of all, you should start introducing fresh produce into your child’s diet when they are very young. If your child grows up eating fresh fruit and vegetables, they will be less likely to refuse to eat them later in life. Now even if your child loves lettuce today, don’t be surprised if they don’t like it next week. That is just the way kids are, their tastes vary from week to week. But don’t worry they will like it again someday. If you are having trouble getting now, find creative ways to love little finger foods so have with dip on the table during see your kids munching cherry tomatoes, and celery about having bite-sized food gets kids excited about them!

your kids to eat vegetables serve them. Younger kids a plate of cut up veggies dinner time. You will away on baby carrots, sticks. Something with a delicious dip

One of the best ways to get kids to eat right is to disguise the veggies in something else. Do your kids like fresh fruit smoothies? Throw a handful of spinach leaves in the smoothie maker and let them blend in with the fruit. You cannot taste the spinach at all and your family will get the good nutrition they need without even knowing it! Make soups or stews that are rich in vegetables. My friend’s daughter will not eat a vegetable if her life depends on it, but she loves my homemade vegetable soup, personally I think it’ because I make it! As a result, I am called upon to make large pots of soup and then freeze individual portions so she could eat it for a snack – and she would! Small children love interesting shapes so put fun noodles in your soups. If you use alphabet pasta kids will enjoy trying to spell their names as they eat the soup. Getting kids to eat their vegetables can be a difficult task, but it isn’t impossible. Just use your creativity and never give up! You will win and they will love their veggies someday.

HE CRUZE, which is  underpinned by GM’s latest  platform, represents a  major leap forward for the iconic  Chevrolet brand.

The car has sporty, coupe-esque styling, a good diesel engine as well as decent handling. The interior has been attractively crafted too and although the Cruze competes on price with the Kia Ceed, Hyundai i30 and Skoda Octavia, it is significantly larger, making you feel like you’re getting more bang for your buck. First impressions when you get behind the wheel are very pleasing. The dials and control panel are chic and the seats and soft-touch materials are good quality. There’s ample room in the front but far less in the back, so taller rear seat passengers will definitely struggle with legroom. I would have preferred a dial rather than a lever to adjust the backrest of the driver’s seat, and there is no lumbar adjustment. That said, the seats are so supportive you soon realise you don’t need one. The boot is big too, and very accessible for a saloon car. In diesel guise it’s a bit noisy to start with but the Chevy is smooth and hushed once up to speed. The 2.0 VCDi LT turbo-diesel automatic version, on test here,

26

produces 150bhp and oodles of pulling power. Its relaxed high-speed performance means you sometimes feel the car shifting through the automatic gearbox more than expected when driving up hills, but the car never feels out of puff. The only downside about having an auto box is that the average fuel economy drops to around 35mpg, whereas on the manual version of this Cruze you’d expect around 51mpg. Still, it’s pretty reasonable if you don’t like a lot of left foot work. The Chevrolet certainly provides good levels of on-road comfort and is a truly impressive distance car, so ideal for anyone who regularly travels the UK’s motorway network. The steering is a bit on the light side and therefore feels a tad uninvolving at times, but the Cruze corners strongly, with great body control and masses of grip. It’s easily as comfortable as its rivals and with an on-the-road price tag of £16, 845 as well as a 5-star NCAP crash safety rating, it’s a lot of car for the money.

Ayscoughfee School Thrive On The Rugby Field Ayscoughfee Hall School are having a great season on the rugby pitch. Every year they organise an under 11 Tag Rugby tournament for independent schools in the area and they won this year’s event with flying colours, winning all four of their matches. Brian Chittick, the headmaster at Ayscoughfee, said that the squad of 11 players from years 5 and 6, including 2 girls, did themselves proud with 100% winning success in the four games played, particularly as they were playing against much larger schools. In the first match of the round robin tournament Ayscoughfee beat The Grantham Preparatory School. They then went on to beat both Peterborough High School and Copthill before clinching the title beating Laxton Junior School from Oundle by six tries to four in the deciding game.

Tim Wins Volunteering Award A local volunteer has received a prestigious award for his services to volunteering in sport after being nominated by Volleyball England. This is the first time in many years a Lincolnshire volunteer has received this award. Tim Barzycki, who is involved in a number of volleyball clubs in Spalding, was presented with a Torch Trophy Trust award. Tim said “I am passionate about volleyball and really enjoy teaching young people how to play as well as still playing myself.” In 2000, with the support of Lincolnshire Youth Service he set up his first club for young people which has gone on to play in local leagues against adult clubs as well as some of the young people representing the region in national competitions. Two have represented their country for their age groups. Not content with this he was instrumental in establishing Spalding Junior Volleyball, a club for 10-12 year olds. This has now been running successfully for three years and young people from this group are now playing regularly at county level and are part of the regional training squads and have progressed to the youth squad. Most recently

a new women’s group called Volleyfit has been started. This is to enable women to keep fit but instead of doing repetitive exercises at a gym they learn a sport at the same time. The Torch Trophy Trust has its origins in the 1948 Olympics held in London. Following the 1948 Games in London, the Olympic Torch designed for the last leg of the relay into Wembley Stadium was presented to the Trust. Since 1980 the Trust has awarded approximately 20 Trophies each year and since that time it has been honoured that each year a member of the Royal Family has attended the Awards Ceremony and made the presentations.

dedicated volunteer has won such a prestigious award. Tim has worked tirelessly for many years supporting young people in sport.’ Spalding Youth Volleyball meets at Spalding Grammar School on Thursdays from 6.30-9.30 pm, Spalding Junior Volleyball meet at Spalding Grammar School on Mondays from 6.30-8pm and Volleyfit follows this from 8-9pm. For further information on any of these groups contact Tim at tim.volleyball@tiscali.co.uk or 07506 409308. For details on the successful adult Spalding Volleyball Club please contact jdchambers@tiscali.co.uk

Tim was presented with his award by HRH the Duke of Gloucester and met, among others, Sir Bobby Charlton who is President of the trust. Tim added ‘this award is a great honour and it is a very proud moment to receive such a prestigious award at national level’. Recruitment & Training

Writing a Good CV A great CV is probably the most important part about getting a job that you need. Your CV shows the kind of person you are and reflects your achievements in life and is the first impression you will make on any potential employer. It is important that your CV clearly shows your personal and contact details such as your name, your address or your contact numbers inclusive of your e-mail. These should be right at the beginning so that it is clearly visible and the employers can contact you easily. It is best if you can list your educational qualifications first and often a table makes it easily comprehensible and pleasing to the eye. It will also show that you are well organized with your facts and will not demand any extra attention or effort from the reader. It is here that you must state in details about your school, college and university together with the marks obtained and other related details! Most CV experts would advise you to next enter into your work SS June 2010 facts AV:Layout 1 21/5/10 7 experience and details. Here too, be09:51 objectivePage and informative as

kind of experience which can impress your recruiter. Do not forget to include your vision or where you see yourself in the long and short term. Talk about the job that you dream of and make sure that it is corresponding with the job that you are applying for. Make a clear list of the qualities and strengths that you have and what you can give to the company by way of these. In fact make sure that the strengths that you speak of are those that are required in the job that you are applying for so that it is of interest to the reader. Finally on the last part of your CV include a list of references, generally a mix of personal and professional contacts are recommended. Don’t forget to include the contact details of your references too! Make sure that these are people who are well acquainted with you and if they are in a field similar to the job that you have applied for then nothing better than that. Make sure that they have a good word to say about you and it is always good practice to make them aware that they are a part of your reference list. Good Luck getting that interview!
