Catemus Celebrates 25 Years Lesley Garrett, Britain’s favourite soprano, has agreed to mark the silver anniversary of Spalding-based choir, Cantemus, by becoming its patron. The honour follows a hugely-successful charity concert last September at Boston Stump when Cantemus sang with Lesley. That concert was the crowning glory (so far) for the

prestigious choir, founded by Eric Wayman, its Musical Director for all that time. Eric (59), a former Director of Music at Spalding Grammar School, said the Lesley Garrett concert, performed to a packed audience of 1,200, was the absolute high point of the choir’s quarter century. Eric, of Bowgate, Gosberton, never imagined when, 25 years ago, he mused over the idea “wouldn’t it be great if I ran my own choir... and I was the committee” that all this time later Cantemus would still be going strong.

Eric’s personal top three musical ‘gigs’ are playing at the Queen’s visit to Peterborough Cathedral for its 750th Anniversary Service, playing the wonderful Royal Albert Hall organ at a concert and, of course, Cantemus’ concert with Lesley Garrett. Cantemus has also given concerts in Chartres Cathedral in France and the Church of the Madeleine in central Paris, sung mass for a packed congregation in Notre Dame Cathedral and sung in Antwerp Cathedral in Belgium as well as performing in this country in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Shropshire. Cantemus will celebrated its Silver Anniversary with a special concert on Saturday, March 19, at 7.30pm in All Saints’ Church, Holbeach.

Work has started on the redevelopment of two playgrounds in Spalding - at Monks House Lane and Ayscoughfee Hall Gardens.

They have been developed to meet the outcomes detailed within the District’s Local Play Strategy and South Holland District Council’s Play Policy. They aim to provide children and young people, particularly those aged 3-12 years living locally, a varied choice of play opportunities that are both innovative and accessible. It is hoped that these exciting projects will also provide children and their families, living locally, a renewed sense of ownership and civic pride once the refurbished play areas are completed.

o you or a family member  attend Sixth Form or College?  Well, hopefully you are aware  of the frustrating issues concerning  cuts to Lincolnshire County Councils  transport. We would hardly be  surprised if you weren’t, after the  advertising of forums to explain how  this will aff ect us were deceivingly  understated.

Under new proposals, the Local Authority will only consider subsidising the cost of transport to get students to their local Sixth Form or College, not the one of their choice, and whether they do the course they want to study or not. Therefore, the many students who are looking forward to embracing their freedom this September and enrolling at College will be understandably very upset when they find that in fact, they don’t have the freedom of choice at all.

As the 4th largest and most rural counties in the country it is understandable that the local authority have a big task on their hands when trying to transport all our young minds. What is not understandable is why they are cutting funds for our most proactive and motivated students who are keen to further their education, ultimately enabling them to reach their full potential and contribute to the county for many years to come. Furthermore, whilst the young have been targeted, the old have been saved, with over 60’s travel concessions and passes unaffected. The inequality is extraordinary, especially when judging the requirement of each party, and why they should be entitled to such benefits, let alone considering which of these age groups are more capable of affording their own cars or transport. If you are joining us with cries of frustration at this point, then let me offer some good news. The new South Lincolnshire College opens in Spalding this month, with provision for full-time

IMPORTANT CHANGES TO SOME BENEFITS IN 2011 Following last year’s budget, there  will be some significant changes  to welfare benefits and income  tax this year, many of which will  affect families.  In addition, the  Government is proposing wide-scale  changes to the benefit system and  the Citizens Advice Service will be  keeping abreast of these changes as  they develop. Important changes to Housing Benefi t in England: If you rent from a private landlord and qualify for Housing Benefit, the rules on how much you can claim are changing on 1st April. If you make a new claim for Housing Benefit after this date the amount you get will be less than if you make a claim before then. The amount of Housing Benefit you’re entitled to is worked out according to the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rate. At the moment the LHA rate is set so that five out of ten properties in your local area should be affordable if you’re claiming Housing Benefit. When the changes come into force, only three in ten properties will be affordable. To get an idea of what the new LHA rate is likely to be in your area, go to the LHA Direct website at lha-direct.voa.gov.uk. The amount of LHA will also be capped according to the size of property that you rent. The caps are: • £250 a week for a one-bed property • £290 a week for a two-bed property • £340 a week for a three-bed property • £400 a week for a four-bed (or more) property. If you’re already claiming Housing Benefit in private rented accommodation, you won’t be affected by the changes until nine months after your local authority next assess your Housing Benefit claim, after 1 April. However, if you’re already claiming Housing Benefit and your circumstances change sooner than that, your benefit could change at that point. Changes of circumstances include someone moving in or out of your property, or moving house. If you’re a local authority or Housing Association tenant, you won’t be affected by these changes to Housing Benefit. To find out more information, go the Directgov website at www. direct.gov.uk A leaflet explaining the changes is available on the National Homelessness Advice Service website at www.nhas.org.uk.

Changes to Maternity and Health in Pregnancy grants: A maternity grant (also known as a Sure Start maternity grant) is a fixed amount of £500 to help people on a low income buy clothes and equipment for a new born baby. It does not have to be repaid. It does not matter what you use the money for. If the baby is born, expected or adopted on or after 11 April 2011, you can only get a maternity grant if the new baby is the only child under 16 in the household. You can get a maternity grant if you or your partner is receiving Income Support, Pension Credit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

8

when you claim. If you’re getting Child Tax Credit, you may also be able to get a maternity grant if your award of Child Tax Credit is high enough. If you are getting Working Tax Credit with an extra amount because of disability, you will be entitled to a maternity grant. Your capital (for example, savings) does not affect a maternity grant. The Health in Pregnancy Grant is a £190 one-off payment to all expectant mothers that is made irrespective of income. The Government considers the universal Grant to be a poor use of limited public funds and it has been abolished to help reduce the deficit. The Government has abolished the Health in Pregnancy Grant from 1 January 2011. Women who reached the 25th week of pregnancy before 1 January 2011 will still be entitled to the grant providing they satisfy the conditions of the grant. Main Changes to Tax Credits and Child Benefit • The Government will reduce tax credit eligibility for families with household income above £40,000 from April 2011 and make further changes in 2012-13; • The Government has announced the removal of a number of elements from the Tax Credits system including the baby element (6 April 2011) and the age 50+ element (6 April 2012); • Child benefit will be frozen for 3 years from 2011-12.

Income Tax:

The central proposal is for all means tested benefits and tax credits to be replaced by a single universal credit that supports people both in and out of work. It would replace income-related Employment & Support Allowance, Jobseeker’s Allowance and income support, tax credits, housing and council tax benefits and support for mortgage interest. Current proposals keep separate disability benefits and some contribution-based benefits. The universal credit would gradually be withdrawn as post-tax household incomes rise. There would be one fixed withdrawal rate that would ensure people always gain from increases in earned income and make it easier for people to calculate their exact financial gains from work. A higher earnings disregard would help people entering work, even if only for a few hours. Other proposals are included in the paper which includes 12 consultation questions. Responses are invited by 1 October. More details can be found on the DWP website. www.dwp.gov.uk and how to budget to avoid future debt. If you are buying something on credit, check whether you’ve got a payment protection insurance policy that will pay off the credit if you are made redundant.

What next ? If you’ve been made redundant, you might have options about what to do next. For example, you could think about going self-employed or getting some further education or training. For further help and advice, you can contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau, or check out the website www.adviceguide.org.uk

There will be a rise in the tax threshold by £1,000 from April 2011: anybody earning more than £7,475 will gain £3.84/week in their take home pay Citizens Advice Bureau give free,  or £200/year. 21st Century Welfare: Reform of the  tax credits and benefi t system: The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Iain Duncan-Smith, has published his department’s proposals for structural reform of the benefits and tax credits system. The main aim of reform is to address complexity and to improve work incentives. The paper sets out the problems with the current system and recognises how work incentives are particularly poor for lone parents working less than 16 hours, and for under 25s not eligible for working tax credit. The hours rules in tax credits mean that people can be trapped into working certain hours and can lose out significantly if they work fewer hours, but gain little if they work extra hours.

Keeping Your Feet in

Health & Beauty

Tip Top

Condition Working 24/7, our feet really do get the rough end of a bargain. But do we take the time to look after them? We look at how you can give your feet the care they deserve.

Basic hygiene – make it your  daily routine Basic foot hygiene lies in the art of cleaning. Sounds obvious doesn’t it? But some of us are guilty of ignoring this basic rule. Feet should be thoroughly cleaned every day to prevent a build-up of bacteria - the cause of bad odour. If you suffer particularly with smelly feet, you might need to wash your feet more regularly and should ask your pharmacist or GP for a recommended anti-bacterial agent.

synthetic fibres won’t let your feet breathe properly, so choose cotton socks. And remember to regularly alter your choice of footwear to prevent bacteria build-up – it also goes without saying: make sure your choice of footwear for daily wear is sensible, fits correctly and is made from natural materials.

Hard skin

flip flops and sandals – and there’s nothing worse than suffering with hard skin and cracked heels. The best way of treating this is to wash your feet in warm water to soften them up, and then follow this with exfoliation using a pumice stone. You then need to apply a good quality moisturiser to help prevent further hard skin from developing.

Soon it will be time to bring out the

Nail care

As temperature rises and summer gets closer, it pays to take notice of what you wear on your feet – socks made from

Nail care is not just about painting your nails! To keep your nails healthy, your toenails need to be kept clean and short. Always use appropriate toenail clippers to cut the nail straight across the top and use a file to smooth down rough edges. Looking after your toenails will help prevent nail diseases and disorders.

Get professional advice If you don’t know where to start with your foot care, book yourself in for a pedicure – have your toenails shaped, your dead skin removed and your feet massaged. You might have heard about the fish pedicure that the celebrities are raving about? You stick your feet into a tank of fish and they eat the dead skin off your feet, leaving you with soft, smooth, exfoliated skin! According to medical research, the fish can help those with eczema and psoriasis; the saliva from the fish contains a healing protein.

Health & Beauty If you are suffering from corns, calluses, cracked heels or other foot complaints like ingrowing toenails, make an appointment to see an HPC registered chiropodist/podiatrist for professional advice and treatment. Motivate yourself to get rid of these nasties before the summer arrives! They will also be able to help you with any foot concerns you have – from arthritic feet to diabetic foot care – by taking a holistic approach to foot care – examining your feet, ankles and legs and also your circulation and nerves supplying them.

Don’t forget to relax! Remember to give your feet a rest by choosing from relaxation therapies like reflexology or specialised foot massages. A chance to distress your whole body! Regular stretching exercises are also effective for improving circulation in the feet. Taking care of your feet will not only help them to look good this summer, but you can

14

rest assured that they’re healthy too – giving you that all-important confidence boost ready for summer. Qualified podiatrist, Susan Lester, from Premiere Podiatry, shares with us her top tips for looking after your feet: Why is it that we know to keep a car running smoothly we need to get a yearly MOT and maintain it regularly, yet we ignore our fee? Most of the time we shove them into inappropriate footwear and then forget about them …. Until they hurt! The usual excuses are: “I’m breaking them in”, “I’m on them all day, what do you expect?” Standing for long periods may cause pain or discomfort to the feet, ankles, knees and hips as well as to the back and neck. Also, standing for long periods in unsuitable footwear may exacerbate any underlying problem you may have with your joints, increasing the rate at which arthritic changes take place. They can also cause corns and hard skin, sweaty and

smelly feet, athlete’s foot, blisters, swollen feet and ankles. The appropriate footwear must allow your toes to wiggle (1 cm gap between the longest toe and end of shoe). Vary heel height from day to day. Wear shoes with a strap or lace over the instep rather than slip-ons. It stops the foot sliding forward in the same way a seatbelt does in a car. A heel height of approximately 4 cm for every day, but reduce the height to 2 cm if you are standing for long periods. Leather uppers to allow the feet to breathe, but synthetic soles to provide adequate shock absorption for all the joints. Finally adopt a regular foot care regime to keep your feet in prime condition.

Recipes – Traditional British menu

By Kate Gibbard

Potted Shrimp

What does England mean to you?  Rolling hills of green countryside, the great poet Shakespeare, our British weather, a cup of tea, our love of cricket… Traditionally celebrated on the 23rd April, Saint George’s Day is a day to celebrate our English history and traditions.

Potted History of Saint George Born in the 3rd century AD, George was a Roman soldier who went on to protest against Rome’s persecution of Christians. Despite being imprisoned and tortured, and eventually beheaded, George never gave up his Christian beliefs. Throughout the years, he became identified with the English ideals of charity, chivalry and courage, a powerful symbol of good conquering over evil. Sadly though, despite the fact that Saint George has been the patron saint of England since 1415, and his emblem, a red cross on a white background, is our flag of England, as a nation we don’t tend to celebrate the day with much excess. And according to surveys, only one in five people know when Saint George’s Day is. This year we want to do our bit to remember England by celebrating one of our greatest achievements - great English food.

Family Favourites As a nation, we have so many classic family favourites. Fish and chips, sausage and mash, ham, egg and peas, shepherd’s pie, bubble and squeak, steak and kidney pie, toad in the hole, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, slow-cooked lamb, pork cutlets – is your mouth watering yet? And let’s not forget the great English pudding. Bread and butter

200g salted butter Pinch ground mace Pinch freshly grated nutmeg Pinch cayenne pepper Freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp finely sliced chives Zest of ½ a lemon, grated 250g brown shrimps or prawns, cooked and peeled Put half of butter into a saucepan and allow to melt over a low heat. Remove the pan from the heat and leave the melted butter to cool, but not set. This will allow the milk solids to sink to the bottom of the pan so you can spoon off the clear, clarified butter later. Place the rest of the butter, all of the spices, cayenne and a good amount of black pepper into a saucepan and melt slowly over a low heat. When melted, remove from the heat and add the chives, lemon zest and shrimps, folding it together. Divide the mixture between four ramekins. Take the pan with the melted butter, and spoon the clarified butter over the ramekins. Cover the ramekins with cling film and chill for one-and-a-half hours. Remove the potted shrimps from the fridge and serve with warm crusty bread.

Spring Lamb By Kate Gibbard

Easy English  Trifl e  For perfectly cooked roast leg of spring lamb, one of the best ways to cook it is with this Lamb in a Blanket Recipe. It may seem an odd way to cook any meat, but is based on a very old method of cooking when the meat would have a long slow cooking wrapped in hay. Prep Time: 20 minutes, Cook Time: 55 minutes, Total Time: 75 minutes Ingredients: 4½lb/ 2 kg leg of lamb, on the bone 3 garlic cloves sliced 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Sea salt and black pepper,4 sprigs fresh rosemary 125ml/4½fl oz red wine 1 tbsp all purpose/plain flour 1 tbsp butter, softened Preparation: Serves 6 - 8 The success of this recipes depends on using good quality, fresh meat and starting the recipe with the meat at room temperature. If your meat has been in the refrigerator remove it for at least one hour before cooking. Heat the oven to 455°F/230°C/Gas 8 Lay the leg of lamb on a chopping board with skin side up. Using a sharp knife make approx 20 tiny slits into and under the skin taking care not to cut into the meat. Slide a slice of garlic into each slit pushing it well under. Place the lamb, skin side up into a large roasting tin and rub the olive oil all over the surface using your hand. Sprinkle generously with sea salt and black pepper and place into the hot oven, uncovered for 55 minutes. The heat of the oven will cause the fat to melt and spit, there may also be some smoke but be assured this is quite normal. Remove the lamb from the oven, take care as the tin and the meat will be very hot and the fat may still be spitting. Lay the rosemary sprigs on the lamb and immediately, completely wrap the tin with 3 layers of aluminum foil. Then wrap the whole package with a thick blanket or I sometimes use several large, thick bath towels. Place the package somewhere warm but not hot and leave for 6 (for rare) or up to 8 hours (for medium rare to medium lamb). The lamb continues to cook slowly in its thick wrapping using the residual heat and steam from the meat, bone and roasting tin. As it cooks really slowly the lamb softens and releases lots of juices to use later for the gravy. After your chosen time, unwrap the lamb and remove it from the roasting tin onto a carving board and cover again with the foil. To make the gravy - place the roasting tin onto the stove top over a high heat, once the juices are bubbling add the red wine and stir well. Turn the heat down and leave the sauce to reduce. Meanwhile mix the flour and butter together to form a paste. Once the sauce has thickened slightly, turn up the heat and add the flour paste and whisk until all the flour is absorbed and the sauce has thickened. Season with a little salt and pepper to taste then strain into a warmed gravy jug. Carve the lamb and serve with a little gravy and fresh seasonal vegetables.

r e n r o C s ’ t Pe Welcoming a new addition to the family The papers are signed, the cosy bed has been bought and your new puppy or kitten, or indeed older adopted pet, is coming home for the first time. It’s an exciting experience for both owner and pet, but there are some things you need to keep in mind when bringing an animal into your home.

Timing If at all possible, it is advisable to be able to spend some time with your new pet once they are brought home - consider bringing them home on a weekend or at a time when you can be close by to make sure they are ok. You will want to watch over them and be present in case they are frightened.

Animal proof your home If this is your first pet you may find yourself surprised at the regular household objects that can become items of interest for your new friend. Elastic bands and plastic bags seem to captivate cats, but can be a disaster if digested. Dogs are fascinated by whatever they can find in the bin, so ensure the bin is secure enough to deny them entry, unless you feel like taking advantage of the dog’s offer to decorate your kitchen for free.

“Dogs are fascinated by whatever they can find in the bin...” Keep doors to washing machines and tumble dryers very firmly closed in case curious cats are looking for inappropriate places to rest. You will soon learn your pet’s particular odd little quirks (yes, they all have them), but thinking ahead of the game can often save you money, be it by an unwanted trip to the vet or by replacing an expensive piece of furniture.

Existing animals If you already own pets and you are bringing a new animal into the home, be prepared to take some time letting them get to know each other. It is often a good idea to keep the new pet separated in a different room, allowing each pet to get a good sniff of each other through a closed door. With cats, you may get to witness some ‘catty’ behaviour as they become acquainted and it may seem as if they will never be friends, but they will eventually calm down and become comfortable around each other. It is important not to rush the process and to give them each equal attention. A good trick is to find a suitable toy that both cats are interested in and play with them so that their attention is focused on the toy rather than each other. This gives them a chance to become familiar with each

other’s scent and to learn that the other pet represents no threat to them. If you are introducing two dogs ensure both dogs are in a calm, submissive state before and during the introduction. Keep both dogs leashed during the initial stages of introduction and remove either dog if they become too excited, returning once the calm, submissive state is again assumed. Taking both dogs out for a walk together is a particularly good tip, as it creates the bonding in a ‘pack’ atmosphere.

Existing humans Humans need to be gentle with the new arrival. Smothering the newcomer is not a good idea, as too much attention while they are feeling vulnerable can actually hamper the pet’s acclimation to their new environment.

“Smothering the newcomer is not a good idea...” Children will of course be especially excited by the new addition to the family. It is wise to carefully supervise their time with the pet during those first few days to make sure that the children do not become over excited and frighten the animal, or cause them to retaliate using their basic instincts.

Vaccinations Both cats and dogs need annual vaccinations to keep them protected from infectious diseases and a yearly visit with the vet is a good opportunity to discuss any concerns you might have. Cats are immunised against: • Feline infectious enteritis • Feline herpes virus • Feline Calicivirus • Feline leukaemia Kittens normally begin their vaccinations at 9 weeks old, with a booster following four weeks later. From then on, annual vaccinations are necessary to keep them up to date.

• • •

Canine distemper Leptospirosis Infectious canine hepatitis

Puppies begin their course of vaccinations at 8 weeks of age, with the boosters at 12 weeks old. Annual vaccinations should be given 12 months from the date of their initial vaccination. For dogs who may be boarding at a kennel you may wish to take the extra caution of vaccinating against bordetella, more commonly known as kennel cough. Additional treatments you may want to investigate are protection against fleas (which can be a real problem if left unattended) and deworming. Take your veterinarians advice as to which products are best for your pet. Enjoy your new addition and keep them occupied, healthy and happy!

Dogs are immunised against: • Canine parvovirus

Nature

Spring  Is  Almost Here.... There are several ways in which nature announces the eagerly anticipated arrival of Spring and these “indicators” could be happening in your garden and neighbourhood right now! The one I always look out for is the sudden appearance of the the Common Frog in the garden pond following a few months of winter hibernation. In my garden this usually happens during the second or third week of March and once again this year I have not been disappointed. The familiar croaking builds into a chorus as the breeding season starts.Sadly last year my frog population was significantly reduced because a Grass Snake decided to take up residence in the garden due to the easy availability of “food”. The Common Frog is familiar to most of us and is much smaller than the Common Toad ,having stripey rear legs, much smoother skin and a pointy nose.Whilst frogs “croak” a toad usually “squeaks”!

common, the males often have crests , attractive black body spots and an orange belly. The females have none of these features and are usually a dull browny colour. In comparison the much-heralded Great Crested Newt is a real style icon...almost dragon like in appearance with dark skin and reaching lengths of 10/15cm. The males have very noticeable crests and the skin is usually warty. Look out aswell for activity in your birdboxes from your local Robins,Blue and Great Tits and Wrens as they prospect several potential nesting sites before choosing one to breed. The Chiff Chaff is an active confident Spring migrant arrival and this Warbler is easily identified (heard but often difficult to actually see )by its familiar “chiff-chaff ” call which it sings tirelessly from trees and bushes. The local resident Collared Doves were early breeders in my garden this year and two broken tell-tale eggs (white and glossy) appeared on my lawn as early as mid-February this year. They construct a very untidy and frail looking nest of twigs in a mature tree.

Another amphibian making a welcome return is the Smooth Newt who return to our ponds to live out their aquatic phase of their life. The Smooth Newt is fairly

Watch out too for the first Brimstone butterflys of the year.I was fortunate enough to see a vividly coloured yellow male (the female is much paler)Brimstone in my garden during the second week in March this year although they can appear as early as late February. Incidentally if you vigorously prune some parts of your buddleia bushes in March you should get lots of late

flowers which will attract butterflys to your garden. In the open countryside Hares will become very active as Spring approaches.Longer legged (and eared) than the Rabbit they can run very fast (perhaps 30/40mph) and are often seen on their hind legs “boxing”.This is usually when a female attempts to fend off the advances of an amorous male. Finally, newly arrived Barn Swallows are always a welcome visitor, and these busy fascinating birds should start arriving from their African Winter homes during late March and early April. Many people make a mental note when they see their first Swallow of the year and then compare it with previous year records.

Getting the

Garden Ready For Spring Part 2

You may remember that in our last issue we covered getting the garden ready for Spring. This issue we take a look at what you need to do next before summer arrives - it’s time to start work on the busy springtime schedule! (If you didn’t get chance to read the article, you can view it online – just go to www. simply-spalding.co.uk and check out the ‘Advice’ section!) In anticipation of the good weather to come, we’ve put together some ideas to help you get the garden ready for spring.

Vegetable garden

Well rotted manure or compost can be dug into the veg patch to provide nutrients for hungry crops such as, brassicas, runner beans, marrows and courgets. Now is the time to plant shallot – you can replant any shallots uprooted by the birds. The first outdoor sowings can be done if the soil is workable. Sow a succession of early maturing beetroot, spring onions and radish and cover with polythene or fleece cloches. There is still time to plant garlic cloves for an autumn harvest. Choose your seed potatoes and place first and second early varieties in tray, ‘rose’ end upwards, from which the shoots develop. A light, frost free position is necessary to successfully ‘chit’ the tubers.

Fruit garden

As long as the ground is not waterlogged or frozen, fruit trees and bushes can be planted now to establish before the drier summer months arrive. Continue winter pruning apples, pears, nectars and quinces and check grease bands are still secure and sticky to reduce the incidence of codling moth damage to the fruit. Consider applying a spring wash to fruit trees to kill overwintering adult bugs and eggs lodged in the bark fissures. damage to the fruit. Consider applying a spring wash to fruit trees to kill overwintering adult bugs and eggs lodged in the bark fissures. If you haven’t done so cut out last year’s fruited raspberry canes and tie in the new ones to wire supports. Cut back all autumn fruiting raspberry canes to ground level. Prune currant bushes accordingly and protect swelling buds from birds with netting. Mature rhubarb crowns can be covered with a dustbin to produce tender rhubarb stalks. If you haven’t done so already, remove the dustbin. Hand pollinate any early peach or nectarine flowers on wall trained bushes.

The glasshouse

Make use of the empty glasshouse by planting up several pots and large containers with first early seed potatoes. Avoid putting too many tubers in the pot and protect emerging shoots from frost with fleece or newspaper. Dwarf beans, peas and strawberries can also be planted into large containers for an early harvest. All containers can be removed from the glasshouse when risk of frost has passed to make room for the traditional tomato and cucumber crops in late April. If you grew overwintering lettuce after the tomatoes were removed in September, keep an eye open for grey mould and ventilate freely during the day. Seed trays should be sterilised and summer bedding seeds sown now. Place trays in a heated propagator to germinate and watch out for the tell tale signs of damping off. Apply a copper based fungicide if observed. Peppers, both sweet and chili varieties need a long growing season to ripen their fruits. Sow now and place pots in a heated propagator.

Borders and beds

Remove any weed growth and apply a generous mulch of well composted manure to the flower beds and around established shrubs. Repot container grown shrubs and Hostas if necessary using a loam based compost and check the drainage holes are not blocked. Many flowering shrubs can be pruned back now including hydrangeas, some spiraea and ornamental elders. Summer flowering clematis will also benefit from a hard prune back to help healthy swelling buds. Now is the time to get hedgerows established before the summer. Why not try a native hedgerow mix to encourage wildlife into your garden?

Around the garden

Scatter a good all round feed such as bone meal or grow more around the borders and gently fork in to the soil to help give your plants a good start. After the wet winter the patio will be looking a bit dirty to. Moss and slime will be in abundance, but cleaning it can be so easy. There are now slab and patio cleaners that require virtually no work, simply mix up into a watering can and water on and then simply leave and let the cleaner do the work. It really can be that easy. For the more tricky areas in between the slabs or block paving, get a block paving brush, with its angled wire brush it will easily get in between the cracks and make it easy to clean.

Happy gardening! Compiled with help from Graham Eblethwaite, Russell Holmes and Dean Coad of Baytree Garden Centre.

Cut down the old season’s growth of herbaceous perennials and lift and divide overcrowded clumps to maintain vigor.

Replacing an existing kitchen is one of the  most expensive and disruptive tasks that you  can undertake. Before you make the decision  to rip everything out and start again, there  are a couple of things to consider: –  • Are you currently in your forever home?  • Does you current kitchen work? • What budget do you realistically have?

Refurbish

If you are not in your forever home and plan to sell your property within the next couple of years, consider if replacing your existing kitchen is worth the expense, time and effort.

ensure the new ones do not obstruct anything • If you are replacing your worktop, check for joints and know where they are positioned • If you are replacing any appliances, spend time measuring to ensure your replacement items will fit safely and securely • Any gas appliances need to be disconnected and fitted by a registered gas fitter

the things you would like from your kitchen, this could be anything from somewhere to entertain, to having a built in wine rack. Write everything down, no matter how unachievable you think it might be.

Whatever you can afford, it might not give you the dream kitchen you were hoping for, but it will certainly help to make your home more presentable when the time comes to put your house on the market. Just remember when choosing your colours and design the kitchen is one of the major selling points so don’t put potential buyers off by opting for something too bizarre!

Once you have set your budget and agreed on the expectations from your new kitchen, it is time to think about the layout, design and colour. Remember that you don’t want to be changing your kitchen again anytime soon, so spend time shopping around looking for styles and designs that you like.

If your current layout works and the cabinet carcasses are still in good working order then why go to the heartache of replacing them? You can achieve a If you are fortunate enough to be in your forever home completely new look simply by updating some of the the first thing to consider is what you want from your existing fittings. Not only will this be considerably kitchen. cheaper but the Will the work will be Next consider what budget you have. space allow completed Plans never quite go to plan so make sure you for your within a design shorter time have a little extra cash in reserve, just in case. dream? frame, with a lot less If not, disruption. it may be worth considering a revamp rather than Start by calculating what budget you have to spend a replacement. However, if the space allows for a complete new design start by making a wish list of all as this will help determine the level of improvements you can afford to make. You can gain a total new look by stripping the kitchen back to the bare carcass and replacing all fittings. However, if your budget doesn’t stretch that far, don’t worry, consider what combination of changes will give you the best results; a fresh new colour on the walls and ceiling, new handles on the cabinet doors and some trendy new tiles can help to transform a dated look.

Replace

Next consider what budget you have. Plans never quite go to plan so make sure you have a little extra cash in reserve, just in case.

Once you have an idea of style and colour, get your kitchen designed by a professional – many of the DIY stores offer free design and planning. They will come out to your home and talk to you about your expectations. Go through your wish list – but be aware you may have to compromise. They will take measurements and note where the current services are located and provide you with a printed plan. Whether you use the company or go elsewhere is up to you, however, unless you are a craftsman by trade, it is advisable to get your kitchen fitted by professionals. Like anything in this world, you get what you pay for, but if you give time to research your dream kitchen thoroughly, you will find some excellent value for money out there.

If you opt for a full refurbishment consider using a local kitchen refurbishment company who will complete the work for you. However, if you are happy to take on the challenge yourself make sure that you do the following: • Measure all of your current kitchen doors, side panels and kickboards and then measure them again • Make sure you can purchase replacements of the same size, check the positioning of the hinges • Think about door handles and what style is required to check out the new site for local residents, find local businesses, advice, events, items for sale and exclusive offers

Owning a Pet is Good For Your Health! by Hayley Willerton From 2 April – 2 May 2011 is National Pet Month. Thousands of  people up and down the UK will be celebrating life with their  pets, spreading the word on responsible pet ownership or  raising money for their favourite charity in fun-fi lled events.  The 2011 theme is ‘Happiness is….time with your pet’.

Family Life Ten Top Tips for Responsible Pet Ownership 1. Think carefully before getting a pet and learn about its special requirements. 2. Ensure your pet is sociable and well trained. 3. Provide a nutritious and well balanced diet. 4. Provide suitable housing and bedding. 5. Clean up after your pet and worm it regularly. 6. Protect against disease. Your vet can provide you with advice. 7. Prevent unwanted litters and neuter your pet when appropriate. 8. Groom your pet regularly.

National Pet Month’s aims are to:

•Promote responsible pet ownership •Make people aware of the mutual benefits of living with pets •Increase public awareness of the role of pet care specialists Responsible Pet ownership Pets are amazing – they can offer us company, affection, comfort and fun, therefore they deserve our care and respect. Whether you own a pet or are thinking of getting one, there are lots of important things you need to know and do to keep your pet healthy and happy. The law requires you to care for your pet properly, make sure you check out our top tips to help you do this, whether your pet is a dog or a horse!

Living With Pets

Whilst you are giving a pet a new home, there benefits are mutual and us humans get a hug amount out of pet ownership – it can even help our health! The RSPCA had this to say on the health benefits of pet ownership, Helping to Boost your immune system •One study found that children brought up with pets have more stable immune systems than those in non-pet owning homes, and missed fewer school days through sickness. •An Australian survey found that dog and cat owners made fewer annual doctor visits and were less likely to be on medication for heart problems and sleeping difficulties than non-owners.

Encouraging exercise

•Owning a dog can motivate people to exercise by encouraging regular walking. A study in Australia found that dog owners who walked their dog were more likely to achieve 150 minutes of physical activity a week than owners who did not walk with their dog. •Another study found that older people who regularly walked their dogs walked faster and for longer periods, and also had better mobility in their homes, than those who didn’t walk regularly.

Providing emotional support

•Pets can be a great source of companionship to their owners. •Growing up with pets may improve children’s social skills with people and caring for a pet encourages childhood responsibility. Pets can also encourage children to develop compassion, understanding and respect for living things. •Pets can act as ‘social catalysts’, by providing more opportunities for social interactions. For example, dogs can help to initiate conversations between strangers in public places. A shared interest in pets brings people together from different parts of the community. People with more social relationships are less likely to suffer from feelings of loneliness or social isolation.

9. Control your pet and ensure it is properly identified. 10. Take out pet insurance for dogs, cats, rabbits and horses to cover against unexpected veterinary fees and third party liability.

Pet Care Specialists

When choosing to bring a pet into your home, it’s essential that you also choose a vet to provide medical care for your pet. Deciding on the right vet for your pet’s needs is a very important part of pet care, and will help to ensure that your pet receives the best possible medical attention. There are many factors to consider when choosing a veterinarian, make sure you think about:

Type Of Pet

Depending on which type of pet you have in your home, you may need to make sure that you choose a vets that is equipped to care for your pet’s needs.

Location

Finding the right veterinarian for your pet also involves considering how far away your vet is from your home. It’s always best to choose a veterinary hospital that you can reach quickly, especially in case of an emergency health situation involving your pet.

Budget

It is also important find out how a veterinary facility will accept payment for medical services. Some veterinarians will only accept payment for services up-front, so it is very important to know this beforehand.

Veterinary Facility

Perhaps the best way to decide if a veterinary surgery is right for your pet is to visit it yourself. Schedule a time when you can visit without your pet, in order to gain a general knowledge about them. Of course vets are very important but there are other needs for your pets health – food suppliers, grooming, day care and what happens if you go on holiday do you have someone who can look after your pet? If not are there facilities where they can be taken to?

Sport either club or county finals day in April. For those who make the ‘A ’team grade there are mens, ladies and mixed county league against other clubs within Lincolnshire. The mens‘A’team are current Division 1 champions! Spalding IBC has a very good name both on and off the green, with the club having plenty of success at national and international level. They say bowls is an old mans game, but times are changing and they have enjoyed a lot of success with our juniors. Run on a Saturday morning by trained coaches many good players have been discovered. The biggest success was winning the National Under 25 club double rink in 2004. At present Spalding is home to, two Under 25 lady internationals, have had two male Junior Internationals in the last 5 years and this year, four of our ladies became the youngest ever to win the national fours title, and now go on to represent England in the British Isles championships in Wales next year. Much of this is due to our coaching manager Colin Wilson. Spalding’s current Club Captains bowls career probably shows how the club’s support and the process of training can develop fantastic players. Joining at 18, Graham Smith played junior bowls to gain valuable experience, moving through leagues and into County League teams, he has now won numerous Club and County titles, been in theWorld Top 20 for the last 6 years and has been a full Men’s International for the past 3 seasons. A feast of good bowls is when the club hosts The Spalding Open in December, which this season had 6 of the world top 20 playing.

Get Up, Get Out! Many of us can get caught up in the routine of daily life and this can sometimesmean we don’t even leave the house! Spalding Indoor Bowls Club offers an alternative to this way of life. Players of all abilities are greeted with open arms into a friendly atmosphere in a modern stadium with good facilities. For the beginner, taster sessions are offered, followed by training sessions, run by qualified and experienced coaches. For those who want to take this one step further there are improver sessions, which, if followed up by joining the club can lead to many options. Individuals can join league teams or groups can get together and create new league teams; there are mixed leagues throughout the day, starting at 10am. Spalding Indoor Bowls Club are also very proud of the very successful ladies section, who have their own league on a Tuesday afternoon. It’s not just weekdays but at weekends there is always great fun and company on offer with the very popular Friendly Section. These games are followed by a great meal supplied by caterers J2. The club fund raise, helping other charities throughout the season. There is a dedicated Heart Foundation day once a year, a relaxed competition and all money taken goes to that charity. Higher ability players improve their game by taking on the‘A’ Team players and there is of course a competitive element (if you want that) with a full selection of club and county competitions that anyone can enter, which culminate in

Go-Ride Season Gets Underway

Spalding Cycling Club is once again be running a full programme of “Go-Ride” training and racing events for young cyclists between the ages of five and 16. In a change from previous years, Spalding Rugby Club will be the host venue for all of the Go-Ride sessions this year. Commenting on the new venue, Chris Peel, Go-Ride Co-ordinator for Spalding Cycling Club said; “The Rugby Club will be a fantastic venue which will allow the coaches to devise many exciting and challenging off road courses well away from the public highway.” Each session will be run by British Cycling qualified coaches and will focus on bike handling skills as well as racing techniques. Chris believes that one of the strengths of Spalding Cycling Club’s Go-Ride section is that it caters for riders of all abilities. He said; “Not only do the Go-Ride events allow experienced young riders the chance to develop their skills, they also offer an ideal opportunity for less experienced riders to come along and enjoy riding their bike away from busy roads in the fresh air, making new friends and getting lots of healthy exercise!” Go-Ride sessions are open to new riders of all abilities and their own bike. Most bikes including road, mountain and bmx bikes are generally suitable. Riders must wear their own helmets at all times. The first Go-Ride session was held on Saturday 12 March 2011, and now fortnightly thereafter. Go-ride sessions start at 10:30 and end at around 12:00 to 12:30 with a 10 minute race. Yearly Go-Ride membership is £10 and each session costs only £1. First time riders can enjoy their first session for free! So why not pop along and see what it’s all about?

Motoring

Hyundai i

By Tim Barnes-Clay -

T

HE LIBYAN CRISIS has pushed up  the cost of a gallon of petrol in  the UK to £6 for the fi rst time.  And the AA has warned that with  unleaded now costing an average  of 132.12p per litre and diesel  increasing to 137.92p, thousands of  drivers could be forced to leave the  car at home.

However, Hyundai is doing its bit to help ease the cost of everyday motoring by producing the thrifty new ix20. The latest model to join the South Korean company’s ‘i-range’ line-up of vehicles has the style of a supermini, the space of Doctor Who’s TARDIS and the economy of a city car. Every manual model

36

i D R Claymedia 4 . 1 x20 rnesc

features Intelligent Stop & Go technology, low rolling-resistance Continental tyres and an Alternator Management System (AMS), giving it the lowest emissions and fuel consumption in the class. In fact the ix20 is so fuel efficient it can actually better or match the figures for rivals’ city cars. Made at Hyundai’s newest European plant in Nošovice, Czech Republic, the ix20 is essentially a compact MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) with a healthy dose of fashion and functionality. It is not, in my opinion, goodlooking but it does have a chic sporty profile, which sets it apart from the boxy ‘minivan’ image typically associated with other MPVs. Inside, the ix20 is firmly screwed together and

matches the spirited design of the exterior. The well-appointed cabin features a height adjustable driver’s seat, air conditioning, six airbags, active head restraints, radio/ CD audio system with six speakers, plus CD, MP3 and USB-/AUX-/iPOD-input capabilities. More importantly, the car provides excellent legroom and headroom in the front and rear. It is also very easy to achieve a comfortable driving position. And once on the move, the ix20 delivers an alert and supple ride, even over the most pothole ravaged roads. That is no surprise though because the car is the first in Hyundai’s history to be extensively tested on the worst of British roads. But back to the fundamental running costs of the car; Hyundai has developed three exceptionally efficient engines which power the ix20: a 1.4-litre with 90PS in both petrol and diesel, and a125PS petrol mated to an automatic transmission. Hyundai expects its new ‘U2’ common-rail diesel engine to be the most popular choice among British buyers looking for exceptional economy. The U2 engines use high-pressure common rail injection, electronically-controlled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to ensure they meet Euro V emissions regulations. What’s more, fitted with Integrated Stop-Start technology and a six-speed manual gearbox, the 1.4 CRDi Style version of the ix20, on test here, records CO2 emissions of just 114g/ km and returns an average fuel economy of

65.7mpg. These class-leading figures will bring reduced motoring costs through lower road fund licence costs as well as saving pounds at the pumps. Ok, by their very nature, MPVs, large or small, are never exhilarating to drive, and the ix20 is no exception. But the car is impressive in so many other respects. It is roomy, tremendously economical, it has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, it has 20,000-mile service intervals and comes with Hyundai’s five-year unlimited-mileage warranty, plus five years of roadside assistance and free vehicle health checks. Phew! By my reckoning all that makes the ix20 ideal for anyone looking for a cost-effective, practical, modern day motor.

“I have workedSimply with Lynsey in a previous capacity and when she suggested one of her poets for an event I was holding I was intrigued.
