Looking After Your Lawn

Summer is FINALLY here! I am sitting in my study writing this, looking into my garden at blazing sunshine after a weekend spent at the coast in glorious weather but how long it will last, who knows? So far it really doesn’t feel like we’ve had much of a summer. Hopefully July through to September will be a different story. I am in the process of packing up my bags for a week in Portugal, it’s a place I have never been to but many friends and family talk about how nice it is. Fingers crossed for good weather, good beaches and some R&R. On the home front we are now at the fun stage of decorating – after moving to a house which needed work earlier in the year it has been fun going around finding accessories and feeling like an interior designer. I just hope it all comes together OK at the end! I will hand over to Vicky to tell you all about what is in this issue. Until next month.

33 Please help the local community stay vibrant by supporting local businesses - and don’t forget to mention SIMPLY SPALDING when calling or buying a product from an advertiser you have seen in the magazine! Without the loyalty of our advertisers we would not be able to deliver such a great magazine to you every month.

Hello! We’ve got a bit of a summery feel to this month’s issue. The school summer holidays are just around the corner and we think about how to keep the children busy both locally and a little further afield. Speaking of children, we discuss education plans from getting in to a nursery right up to university applications. These things come around sooner than you think! I would also like to introduce a new monthly column – astrologer Sandy Davies will be guiding you through your monthly horoscopes so make sure you take a look at what this month has in store for you! Enjoy the issue!

Arts Activities and Events Coming to Local Libraries As part of its Phase II programme, Transported has commissioned artists and companies to perform and create art in libraries across Boston Borough and South Holland. Transported is an arts programme funded by Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places scheme, aimed at increasing the number of people enjoying the arts in Boston Borough and South Holland. One of the strands for 2014 is called Open Book, and is a partnership working with local libraries. All of the activity is completely free – so why not take the opportunity to rediscover your local library this summer? The Eloquent Fold – A Flock of Words A Flock of Words will combine a series of arts making free workshop sessions with the public and a residency working in Long Sutton, Crowland and Spalding libraries. Golfers get in the swing of fundraising with Focus Consultants A £250 cheque has been handed to charity following an annual golf day staged by Focus Consultants. The company, which specialises in funding and economic development, project management, chartered surveying and energy, staged the event at Belton Park Golf Club in Grantham. Players donated £250 in the raffle, and the proceeds were presented by Focus Partner Trevor Newton to Jamie Davenport from Macmillan Cancer Support to help fund Macmillan nurses. Trevor, who is based in the Boston office of Focus, organised the event along with Associate Craig Gould, who is based at the company’s Nottingham headquarters. The event, which has become an annual date on the Focus Consultants’ calendar, attracted players from across the East Midlands. Twenty seven clients, associates and staff took part in the charity day.

New fire safety campaign launched to highlight dangers of illegal cigarettes A daughter, whose 71 year-old mother lost her life in a house fire linked to illegal cigarettes, is backing a new fire safety campaign. Julie Grant from Swineshead is joining forces with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and Lincolnshire Trading Standards to highlight issues with Jin Ling cigarettes and the dangers of not putting cigarettes out properly. To coincide with the launch of a Smokefree Lincolnshire funded video, which graphically shows how quickly this sort of fire can destroy a home and claim a life, Julie is, for the first time, telling the tragic story about how her mum, June Buffham, died. “The date will haunt and stay with me forever,” says Julie. “I’ll never forget hearing those words: there has been a fire at home and your mum is dead. The moments that followed were horrible. Why did this happen? How could I tell my son and daughter that their Grandma, who they loved dearly, was dead? Over the following days, there were so many visitors to the house - the Police, the Red Cross, the Vicar and so many family and friends all wanting to help in some way. “The worst thing was being asked for a DNA sample to help identify mum. I just

couldn’t understand why until the day after her death when I walked into the room with the Coroner. That sight and smell will not leave me…the room had been completely destroyed by the fire. “I wanted to know why did the fire start? I wanted to hear that mum had had a stroke or heart attack and had died before the fire. But because of the lack of remains, the cause was put down as accidental death caused by a cigarette being dropped in her chair. Mum had not stood a chance. They assured me that within seconds Mum would have been overcome by the toxic fumes before the fire engulfed her - this doesn’t help the image I have in my mind.” Dave Ramscar, chief fire officer at Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and chair of Smokefree Lincolnshire, commented: “This is such a sad case, and one which we unfortunately see time and time again - some where people have sadly died, like in June’s case. “In the past two years, all domestic fire fatalities in Lincolnshire were caused, in some way, by smoking materials, and, so far, this year, we have seen another two smoking related fire deaths. With this in mind, it is so important that we continue to educate and remind people - that if they choose to smoke - to make sure they put their cigarettes out, right out, when they have finished. “We would ask that if you have elderly parents or grandparents, try to understand their smoking habits, and, if necessary, encourage change, i.e. not smoking in bed or when tired and, if you are concerned or

need some advice, call us on 01522 580397. We can offer free home fire safety checks, where we will come give advice and, if necessary, provide specialist equipment, to reduce the risk of cigarette related fires.” Emma Milligan, principal trading standards officer at Lincolnshire County Council, continues to work with HMRC and Lincolnshire Police to crack down on the sale of Jin Ling cigarettes in Lincolnshire. Emma comments: “This is a real priority for us. Jin Ling cigarettes are so dangerous because they don’t go out when not actively being smoked, potentially causing a horrendous house fire, like the case here. Since 2013, we’ve seized over 138,000 illegal and counterfeit cigarettes in the county, but we recognise that we need to do more. “We hope that Julie’s story and the video can raise awareness of the dangers of this brand. Although they are cheaper than legal cigarettes- you can’t put a price on life, so please don’t buy them. If you suspect anyone of selling cheap, illegal cigarettes, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Gedney Flower Festival Thursday 24 July 2014 will see the start of Gedney’s annual Flower Festival, its 48th year! In addition to themed arrangements, the Church will be

adorned with flowers of every shape and colour. It takes two days and over seventy arrangers to decorate the Church in readiness for the Festival. The Church will be open each day from 10.00 am.During the four day Festival there will be various stalls in the Church selling cakes, plants, a tombola, local produce and books. Refreshments are available throughout the day including lunches, snacks, cakes and drinks. Bennetts Celebrates Bennett Butchers, one of Spalding’s oldest businesses, is celebrating 100 years of trading from its current Winsover premises. The business was founded in 1899 by Henry Bennett and was situated at The Ancient Briton Inn on London Road which is now Briton Court Complex. The Winsover shop and premises were bought in 1914. It was previously occupied by the well-respected Parkinson family who were also butchers in the town until the late 1900s. Henry Bennett was the great-grandfather of the current owner Andrew Parsons who has been at the helm since the death of his father Terry in 2002. After the death of Henry Bennett, his son Burton took over and ran the business until his retirement in 1977. Known as Burt, he was renowned for his expertise in feeding beef cattle, he judged cattle on a national level and had entered the champion at various livestock events. His final success was exhibiting the champion beast at Spalding Christmas Fastock Show in 1977. Burton’s daughter Joan married West Pinchbeck butcher Terence Parsons whose family also had a history in the meat trade going back to the early 1900s. Together they further progressed the business by completely refitting the shop in the late 1980s. Joan is still a partner in the business and even at 76 years of age she still enjoys being involved. Their son Andrew, who runs the business today, joined on leaving school in 1983. He has recently refitted and upgraded the bakehouse and production facilities to the rear of the shop. Andrew has always had a keen interest in the art of butchery from

an early age recalls that when he first left school Mondays and Tuesdays would be spent at Sleaford, Stamford and Spalding cattle markets buying livestock which would be slaughtered at the family’s own facility in Winsover Road. Andrew is one of only a few master butchers left in the UK which is someone who can evaluate livestock, slaughter, butcher and be able to sell with confidence to the final consumer. He says: “People seem to think that because we have been established for over 100 years it must be easy. But let me tell you that could not be further from the truth! My

100th Anniversary predecessors worked hard to gain a good reputation and it is equally as challenging to maintain it in an ever more demanding market place.” The business was built on supplying top quality meat and that vision and focus has never changed. “To this day we still buy live and directly from Lincolnshire farms ensuring that animal welfare, quality and bio security are of the highest level. We have a good working relationship with the team of environmental health officers at SHDC and we are delighted to say that we are, and always have been a 5 star hygiene rating operation since the scheme was implemented which we feel is very important to our customers, giving them full confidence in our procedures. We are also very proud to say that many of our products are multi-award winners at competitions such as The Lincolnshire Poacher, Butchers pride, Sausage fest, East of England and The Champion of Champions in London. “ The team at Bennetts are all experienced craftsmen and women

and are always willing to help and advise customers. Many of them have spent a lifetime in the trade. Andrew says the secret to success for Bennetts is family and staff: “They are passionate about providing quality meat and wanting to keep improving on what we do and keeping ahead of the competition.”

It has been an important few months for the District Council with two key appointments to take us forward and to help us to have a fresh look at how we provide our services in the future. We clearly strive to provide quality services but services that are both efficient and cost effective for you the tax payer. We have been through a long period of Interim Chief Executives while we looked at our options, but have now appointed Anna Graves as our permanent Chief Executive. Anna joins us from Harborough District Council and has over 18 years’ experience in the public sector and has a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the management of rural authorities. Joining Anna in the corporate management team is Julie Kennealy who has extensive experience in local government and as a management consultant as well as being a qualified accountant with extensive knowledge of regeneration. Both posts are shared management posts with Breckland Council in Norfolk which from a tax payers point of view means that we only pay half of their salaries! The NHS is going through major reform and

Nick Worth, The Deputy Leader of South Holland District Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages

Lincolnshire County Council who now have the direct responsibility for Public Health are also doing a major review of how they run public health and social care services in the future. Its main aims are not just to provide quality health and care services, but also to improve joint working with other health professionals such as the Clinical Commissioning Groups. Providing the right care at the right time closer to the patient’s home, using early intervention and prevention services. The District Council has a role to play here not just in its housing role, but also to provide activities, such as the healthy walks project, fit kids and rehabilitation programmes referred from the doctor which are carried out in our sports facilities. Grow your own vegetables and the Kitchen Garden project which now has a number of community gardens around the district all help to promote healthy eating and contribute to the prevention of obesity and diabetes. The aim of the public health review will be to provide 7 days-a-week services for local people through community neighbourhood teams, supported by urgent care centres. Hospitals can then be freed up to provide specialist or genuine emergency trauma and cardiac treatment. There is, however, a big challenge with a

fast growing elderly population with high prevalence of chronic diseases and long term conditions. Increasing expectations from patients, users and carers, aligned with financial pressures that currently predict a deficit of £20m for 2013/14 and a forecast deficit of £100m in the next five years will mean some major changes to the way services are run, but it can be done by working together. It is expected that the details of the newly designed health and care services will be up for public consultation towards the end of the year. District Councils have the power to reduce council tax discount on second homes and have set that at 10%. The County Council receives 75% of that additional income and currently distributes that money back to the District Council on schemes that are of mutual benefit. In South Holland this will provide additional funding to provide the Call Connect Bus Service, health and well-being activities, like the ones described earlier in the article, part funding towards an Anti-Social Behaviour post and funding towards the revenue cost of CCTV.

School news

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

The Priory School This year marks the 20th anniversary of the French Exchange Trip for a Special School in Spalding. The Priory School’s first exchange trip launched in 1994 with I.M.E Le Luart Special Federation School in France. Brian Amess, a pupil who attended the first trip in 1994 when he was only 14 years old, will now see his daughter Alice leaving for the exchange. Mr Amess says “The French exchange was an exciting trip and it was the first time I had ever been on holiday in my life. It was great fun.” Alice says, “I am really looking forward to the trip and all the activities we will do and improving my skills in French.”

Mrs Kate Isaacs, the Year 9 teacher who has been organizing the trip for the last 18 years, believes the exchange is “a fantastic opportunity for the students to get a feel and understanding of another culture. Each year the students come back different people. ” Every year the exchange

has a theme, with this year’s being transport. During their week-long stay in Spalding, pupils have been cycling, rowing and playing football as well as visiting the Romany Museum and taking a ride in the Water Taxi to Springfields. Pupils also have taken the train to Peterborough where they visited the Museum and Queensgate. In the evening they enjoyed a fun filled Party Night. As well as local amenities and activities they have ventured out of our county and visited the Railway Museum and Jorvik Viking Centre in York. Before their French visitors departed on Friday morning they all enjoyed lots of games in school. Despite only taking around 12 students each year, the welcoming of the French students to the school proves to be beneficial for the whole school who actively get involved.

Clough & Risegate School

Wisbech Grammar School

We are delighted with the ‘Good’ outcome of our recent Ofsted inspection. The report states that ‘lessons are lively and interesting and teachers make sure that pupils achieve well.’ Since Mr Thompson took up post of head teacher at the school in September 2012, the school has been on a rapid journey of change and improvement, building on the previous skills of the staff and work of the governing body. We are extremely fortunate to have truly fantastic children within the school, who after all, make the school what it is. The Ofsted report comments that ‘pupils are courteous and polite to each other and adults. Older pupils show consideration for younger ones and pupils of all ages get on well.’ We are very proud of our pupils and I still hold in my head a comment made to me on my first day as head teacher at this school by a pupil – ‘we are like one big family.’ We encourage pupils within our school to take on responsibilities and develop independence – our school councillors have played a key role in driving developments within the school, ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to contribute to the school’s future. The staff at our school are a true credit

Four sixth form students at Wisbech Grammar School have reached the pinnacle of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award by achieving the scheme’s highest honour. The A Level students, Thomas Beresford-Peirse (18), Beth Rosier (18), Amy-Hope Steele (18) and Holly Young (17), have taken time out from their studies to complete the five sections needed to reach the top level. They have undertaken a four-day self-sufficient expedition in the Lake District, learnt new skills, volunteered at local charitable organizations and participated in a regular physical activity, as well as attending a week’s residential course. Head of outdoor learning Mr Dominic Garfoot said: “The gold award says a great deal about the qualities of the pupils and will go a long way to giving them the edge in the highly competitive world of higher education and work as they leave Wisbech Grammar School. We are extremely proud of their achievements.” During the current academic year 36 pupils at the school have achieved bronze, ten have gained silver and over 140 pupils are involved in the scheme. Elsewhere, trampolinists from our preparatory school have taken top awards in a national competition. The under-11 and under-9 teams from Magdalene House both finished in third place at the National Independent Association of Prep Schools Trampolining Championships in Croydon (on Saturday), behind the strong sports school, Millfield. In addition to claiming the team bronze medals, Alana Pritchard (9) claimed second place in the under nine individual competition and head girl Ellie Salmon (10) was placed fourth at under-11 level. Magdalene House headmaster Mr Chris Moxon, who attended the event, said: “I am just so proud of our girls, who were fighting well above their weight. For Magdalene House to come third in these two competitions against much bigger

to the success we have made. They are all extremely dedicated and enthusiastic and have excellent relationships with all of our pupils – a comment frequently made by both pupils and parents. We have recently started a breakfast club, which runs from 8am until 8.45am (when the school gates open) and we have had very positive feedback from parents and children alike. In addition to this we also run regular after-school clubs, most of which are free of charge to parents. Both of these facilities allow for social development of our children, as well as providing busy parents with flexibility. We are very proud of our school and would warmly welcome anyone who wishes to visit us or join us as we continue our journey towards outstanding.

Moulton Chapel Primary We have been very busy starting the new summer term. Our visit from the HMI inspector validated that we are very much on the road to further improvement following our Ofsted inspection earlier in the year. We posted a very respectable 2nd place in the Mouton Chapel Parade this year and had a thoroughly good time in the sun. Our drummers kept the crowds entertained and did a super job at it too. The whole of Key Stage 2 have been very busy with SATs lately and the Year 5 and 6 children are looking forward to letting off some steam at PGL Caythorpe. They will be trying out new activities this year and some we have enjoyed from previous visits. Our Year 4 children will be attending the Deanery School Event for the first time and are very much looking forward to it. At the end of term 5 we will be supporting our school dog by holding a fun day. He is called Rodney and is a rescue greyhound that lives with Ann at Kama Cave. We are holding a fun day in his honour, where the children can come dressed as dogs, get doggy paws painted on their faces and buy doggy paw print biscuits. We will be collecting a hamper of goodies for Rodney, his brother and all the other dogs too. In term 6 we will be welcoming the new reception children into school for taster days. This gives them an idea of what ‘big school’ will be like. We will be planning our annual sports day, trips out and end of year celebrations.

prep schools is a tremendous achievement.

Weston Hills Primary School Year 3 and 4 children will be attending a Tennis Tournament at Spalding High School this term organised by Agilitas – they have been practicing with our after school Tennis club! Class 2 performed their Collective Worship last term – this was very well attended by parents/carers, and will centre around their topic work for the term “Starry Night”. Class 5 will be holding their Collective Worship this term.

Children in Class 1 and 2 are going to Ferry Meadows, looking at the environment, pond dipping, etc. Our Year 5 and 6 children will be going to London in June to the Palace of Westminster and then the London Eye. This is a bi-annual event for us and always much anticipated. The PTA Summer Fayre is always a well-attended event, and this year it will be Mrs. Turnell’s last as head teacher.

When I was asked to write this article I was somewhat daunted by the idea. My late father had a regular column in a free local magazine. I was a PC in Holbeach for some of that time and often had people ask if I was related to the creator of those ‘amusing and interesting’ articles. I was always proud to reply that the author was my father. So whilst I am not able to share amusing wartime stories with you or cheeky anecdotes about life, I am going to take the opportunity to introduce you to me and my team. I took up the position of sergeant at Holbeach Police Station in May. I joined the police in 2000 and worked the first few years in Holbeach before becoming a Sergeant at first in Stamford, then Spalding, and then Boston. Last year, I worked for a year in East Lindsey, covering Skegness and The Wolds. I grew up in Holbeach though and lived here with my parents until I left home. Both professionally and personally, I have returned to my roots. I inherited a station of hardworking officers and look forward to working with them to help make the area a safer place to live. So on to the teams you see day-to-day in your neighbourhoods. There are two teams, one for ‘Holbeach Town and Rural’ and one for ‘The Suttons’. Each team is led by a Police Officer who is the Community Beat Manager (CBM) and has a team of three Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). They listen to the concerns of local people through various methods such as attending Policing Panel Meetings. Then they attempt to deal with these long term or on-going issues. Also working from Holbeach are a team of ten officers who provide a 24/7 response to urgent and immediate incidents. The Holbeach Town and Rural team is led by PC Scott McCaig. Before joining Lincolnshire Police, he was a team leader for a supermarket. He is also noticeably keen to find solutions to problems and work hard. He plays football and dodgeball so think twice before running from him. PCSO Ian Cripps joined us in 2008. He loves country sports and particularly enjoys shooting and fishing. He looks after the more rural aspects of the area and is our specialist for The Farm and Country Business Watch Scheme. He knows lots of the local farmers and landowners and is always my first port of call for issues affecting the farming communities. PCSO Jane Gardner is the longest serving member of the Holbeach team. She has recently led the Junior PCSO scheme at local schools which teaches primary school children subjects such as personal safety and community awareness. When she’s not at work, she enjoys motorsport

“They all enjoy their jobs and want to do their best for your communities. To read more about us and for information specific to your area, visit www.police.uk.” and genealogy. PCSO Tracy Mason joined us in 2009 and has been at Holbeach since 2012. She’s currently developing a shopwatch scheme in Holbeach which will prevent crime in the town centre. She also enjoys travelling and spending time with her family. She is also a self-confessed petrol-head and likes nice cars (all within the speed limits though!) Leading The Suttons Neighbourhood Policing Team is PC Laura Robinson. She is a veteran in Holbeach having been at the station longer than any officer here. Ten years on The Suttons team, she certainly knows the area, and the people. When she’s not at work, she loves the outdoors and likes walking and cycling as well as travelling. Before joining us 8 years ago, PCSO Fylippa Bennett was a CCTV operator and worked for security in a retail outlet. She has specific responsibility for Long Sutton and the Gedney. She is our Coordinator for Horse Watch which provides advice for owners of horses and anyone else connected with the equestrian community. In her spare time she enjoys going to the gym, walking her dogs and spending time with friends and family. PCSO Toni Cardillo originally worked at Boston Police Station but for the last two years she has been at Holbeach. Her specific responsibility is for Sutton Bridge and when she arrived, she brought her own Police Station! Not quite literally; but having worked with the Mobile Police Station staff at Boston she was able to negotiate more regular visits of the station to our area. Covering all the other rural areas of The Suttons area is PCSO Ben Harrington who joined us in 2007. He has enjoyed a number of exciting projects here, including The Sutton Bridge Motor Project aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour in the area. Ben works actively with local farmers to assist them in preventing thefts of farming machinery and equipment and offering relevant crime prevention advice. They all enjoy their jobs and want to do their best for your communities. To read more about us and for information specific to your area, visit www.police.uk.

Advice

Ending a marriage

W

hen your marriage comes to an end, you will probably have a number of things to sort out with your partner, which may include childcare, money, housing, and other property and possessions. You could decide to separate informally, without going to court. You could draw up a separation agreement, either with or without the help of a solicitor. However, it is advisable to use a solicitor if you want to do this because of the possible long-term consequences for your financial situation. If you want to end your marriage formally, you will have to apply to court to get a divorce. If you want to start divorce proceedings in an undefended case, you will need to get the necessary forms. You can get these from the Family Court. You can find your nearest Family Court at https://courttribunalfinder. service.gov.uk/. It can take up to six months for the court to grant an undefended divorce, but longer if children and money issues are involved. If either you or your partner does not agree to the divorce, it is called a defended divorce and you should get the help of a solicitor. If you want to apply for divorce and your partner objects, you will need to talk to a solicitor first.

by Lisa Barwell The court will grant you a divorce if you or your partner can show that your marriage has irretrievably broken down. For a marriage to have irretrievably broken down, you must be able to prove one of the following:• adultery • unreasonable behaviour • desertion • two years’ separation with consent • five years’ separation without consent. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to get financial help towards your divorce

Family mediation Before, or during, divorce proceedings, you may want to use a mediationservice. Mediation can help you and your partner reach joint decisions about arrangements for the future. It is an alternative to solicitors negotiating for you, or having decisions made for you by the courts. You may be able to get financial help towards paying for family mediation, depending on your circumstances. In some cases, where disputes about children are involved, you will be required by the court to use a court-based mediation service.

Financial arrangements at the end of a marriage When your marriage ends, both you and your partner can apply to court for maintenance from the other. You can do this regardless of whether or not you have children and whether or not you are divorcing. In most cases, you will be expected to arrange a meeting with a family mediator before the court will consider your application. A maintenance order will normally stop if the one getting maintenance starts living with another partner.

Housing A court can order who should stay in the home in the short term and in the long term. Both you and your partner have a right to stay in the home until either there has been a divorce, or one of you has been ordered to leave through a court injunction. If you decide to leave your home, depending on your circumstances you may be able to apply for long-term accommodation from your local authority as a homeless person

Summer Getaways

Get Away with the Family ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Coach trips with the family can be a great way of seeing the country (or another country for that matter) safe in the knowledge that you will not miss anything important as it will have already been planned into your itinerary “Coach Trips can be especially fun if you are travelling abroad as all you need to do is book and let the touring company take care of the rest.”

T

here will be nobody tired from having to do all the driving and you will have ready access to a tour guide with local knowledge. You also won’t need to worry about where to stay as many coach tour companies offer packages so everything is taken care of. You can take the opportunity to visit somewhere you wouldn’t usually go or take a day trip safe in the knowledge that your pick up and drop off are relatively close to home or sometimes to your doorstep itself. There is something for everyone from sightseeing to trips to heading to London to see a show and even trips abroad. When you are looking for a tour operator make sure you use someone with a good reputation who is well established. You can then take a look online or call for a brochure before making the big decision – where to go! You may find that some negotiation is required here as different family members may have other preferences to you so be prepared to have a long discussion! Once you have made a decision make sure you are booking onto the right kind of tour – if you turn up with your family on a coach trip meant for singles there are going to be some odd looks coming your way! If you are looking to attend a special event such as a music concert or Christmas market then travelling by coach removes the headache of having to find somewhere to park and then the even bigger headache of having to find the car again when you’ve finished! You’ll also find that, for the most part, coaches will be able to park closer to your venue than you could in a car so there will be less distance to walk. Dickinson’s Coaches, based in Boston are a good example of exactly what a tour operator can provide. They offer tours which keep you pretty local such as Norfolk but also go further afield to places like the Lake District. You can also travel across the water to Ireland. Back in the UK they offer a variety of days out from London musicals to Christmas markets so you can start to get a picture of the sheer variety that

“...travelling by coach removes the headache of having to find somewhere to park...”

operators have to offer. Coach Trips can be especially fun if you are travelling abroad as all you need to do is book and let the touring company take care of the rest. You can then travel comfortably through your country or countries of choice without having to hire a car and remember which side of the road you are meant to be driving on! While the touring company will offer excursions there is nothing to stop you heading off and exploring on your own should the fancy take you giving you the best of an organised tour and a bit of personal time. Another benefit is that you can pay for all of your excursions in advance meaning you can carry less holiday money with you so you won’t have to spend your time worrying about how much money you have on you. Although coach travel is comfortable make sure you have your creature comforts with you. If you are travelling overnight then take a pillow, blanket and toiletries so you can get a good night’s sleep and then be able to freshen up in the morning! If you are just taking a day trip don’t forget snacks and some form of entertainment should you find yourself on a motorway with not too much to look at. Books (or e-readers), mobile phones and MP3 players can all come in handy. And above all don’t forget your camera!

Education Plan

Your Child’s Education Plan from Birth to University

Some parents have their children’s education plan mapped out pretty much from birth

Acorn Child Care Acorn Lodge in Spalding believe that tailoring the Early Years Experience for each individual child right from the outset is vital. In the summer term, before children move up to school, the practitioners there fine tune the skills children have gained, to ensure they are confident about their forthcoming move. Jen Holmes, Manager says “our hope is that every Little Acorn and Oaklet will have had the happiest Early Years Experience possible and that by learning through play they will be excited about lifelong learning.

By Kathy Holmes

O

thers have a vague idea of which primary school they would like their little ones to attend or have heard about a nursery that sounds like the right place for them. In reality, choosing where your child goes to learn is an ongoing process which continues right through to adulthood so it deserves the time and effort which is required to get it right for both you and your child. Choosing a Nursery Generally, the nursery you choose will be done according to the way you feel about it at a visit. You are under no legal obligation to send your child to a nursery many parents feel that it is good preparation for moving up to a school setting. Nurseries come in all shapes and sizes but broadly fall into four categories: 1) Playgroup or pre-school group 2) Private nursery schools 3) State nursery school 4) Nursery attached to a primary school For many parents the first port of call is to ask other parents they know about which nursery their children attend as well as asking for recommendations. Make a list of the things which are important to you personally that a nursery should have. This can include things such as “having a large outdoor area” or “there must be a lovely quiet area” After word of mouth you can take a look online or see who is advertising locally to draw up a list of the nurseries close to you. The next thing to do is book visits to your shortlist. If you find that your list of names is too long you can take a look online at their OFSTED reports. It is a good way of comparing nurseries as well as seeing if they excel in the areas you find important. You can find all the information you need at www.ofsted.gov.uk So now the exciting part – the visits! Make sure you leave plenty of time to visit each one so you do not have to rush, as well as being able to ask any questions you may have. Remember that each nursery will offer something different for your child so keep an open mind – you may find that something which had never occurred to you as being important in selecting a nursery suddenly becomes essential to you! Whilst on your visit make sure you ask plenty of questions. Sandra Algar, Manager of Bells Day Nursery suggests the following questions should be on your list: “Ask about opening hours to make sure it fits around your schedule. That’s an important one. We get asked a lot about the ages we cater for and whether there is funding available for two year olds. The outside play area also comes up a lot. “Don’t be afraid to ask about the qualifications that the staff hold. A good nursery will be only too happy to

share this with you. After all, it will be demonstrating to you that their staff are able to meet your child’s needs.” Also spend time talking to the staff. If they are friendly and enthusiastic then you can start to picture how they will be with your child. Do the children look content and interested in what they are doing? Ask about a typical day – what routines are there and what sort of activities will your child be taking part in? Are there healthy selections and snack opportunities throughout the day? Do they have meals similar to the ones you would serve at home or is there the chance for your child to experience new tastes and flavours? What does the area outdoors look like and how often do the children get to go outdoors? This can be especially important in the summer months. Once you feel you have decided on a favourite then contact your preferred nursery and ask for a trial session. This may only be an hour or two but you can experience dropping off your child and seeing how much fun they have had when you pick them up. After all that research and effort, having the right nursery can reap big rewards for both you and your child. Primary Schools Before your child finishes at nursery you will need to put in an application for a primary school place. The trick to choosing the right school, as with choosing a nursery, is to do your research. Begin by looking at the catchment area you belong to, if you are unsure then a call to the local education authority will answer the question for you. Once you know which schools are available to you then the next step is to decide which is right for your children. Most schools have a website and you can glean most of the information you need on there. They are legally obliged to include information about their policies, OFSTED results and assessment information. You can also have a look at local league tables to see where the school sits. If you are lucky enough to know parents with children at any of the schools you are considering then have a good chat with them to find out what they do and don’t like about the school. Once you have narrowed it down then arrange to visit the school. Most schools have open days throughout the year which you can attend or if you can’t make it you can speak to the school to arrange a more suitable time for a tour All schools have admission criteria to decide which children can be allocated places. The council can give you a booklet about schools’ criteria and how to apply. Æ SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Education Plan

Your Child’s Education Plan from Birth to University

Æ Admission criteria are different for each school. For example, schools may give priority to children who have a brother or sister at the school already, who live close to the school, from a particular religion (for faith schools), who do well in an entrance exam (for selective schools), who went to a particular primary school, in care or being looked after (all schools must have this as a top priority). You must apply to be considered for a place at a school, even if it is linked to your child’s current nursery or primary school. Independent schools have their own admissions procedures so you will need to apply directly if you want to send your child to an independent school. Applications usually open at the beginning of the autumn term of the year before your child is due to start school. You must apply for your place by 15 January. You will be asked to list the schools you’re applying for in order of preference and you must apply for at least 3 schools. Councils will send confirmations for primary schools on 16 April. Choosing a secondary school Before you know it the end of the primary school years will be upon you and as soon as your child starts their final year, Year 6, you will need to start making a decision about secondary schools. The process is very similar to selecting a primary school with a key exception – we live in an area which still has a grammar school system which needs to be taken into account. Lincolnshire’s 14 Grammar schools are non-fee paying state schools which are selective (via the 11 plus test) that are open to all children who qualify. The Local Authority is not responsible for selection arrangements and testing but does coordinate the admissions process through which parents make applications to the schools of their choice. To be eligible for a place at one of Lincolnshire’s grammar schools, children must demonstrate that they have reached the required standard for entry as determined by 11 plus testing. The tests are normally taken early in the last year of primary school. Parents who would like their children to take the 11 Plus will need to register for testing towards the end of Year 5. As tests are taken in September, most parents will be able to find out whether their children are eligible for a grammar school place before having to complete the Local Authority application forms. Much like the primary school application form, you are able to choose up to three secondary schools. If a child is not offered a grammar school place, either because he or she has not reached the required standard for entry, or the school is over-subscribed, there is a right of appeal to an independent panel. Irrespective of whether a grammar school is in your plan or not it is a good idea to repeat the process you went through with primary schools and pay a visit to the schools you are considering. Bourne Grammar School’s Director of Business & Development, Jane Gray, told us, “There’s nothing like first-hand experience 26 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

to convey what school life is really like, as well as getting a feel for the learning environment.” This time having your child with you is an absolute must – it’s not always necessary when choosing a primary but at secondary level your child can give you important feedback and may want to ask their own questions which otherwise wouldn’t have occurred to you. The whole process lasts seven months, from September when you can begin to visit open days to March when the offers of places are sent out, so prepare yourself for a long wait. Sixth Form or College? Before your child sits their GCSEs at age 16, they will need to have a think about what they would like to do next. There are two main routes here – a sixth form attached to a school (possibly the school they currently attend) or college. There is a divergence here as your child can choose whether to continue down an academic route or choose a vocational qualification to begin studying a trade. GCSE grades and the personal preference of your child will very much dictate the route they take but you can assist by talking through their options and going with them to prospective open evenings. University Applications The careers service at your child’s secondary school will help to begin the process of applying for a place at University. If you, as a parent, would like to get involved then your best resource is UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Services) which not only has as much information as you could possibly need but they also have details of all the institutions and courses on offer. If your child has no indication of what they want to study at University then encourage them to think about what they enjoy doing day to day as themes may come out of it which relate to various courses. At the very least it will get them to focus on what they would and wouldn’t enjoy studying! Once your child has decided what they want to study and made sure that their predicted A Level grades will allow them access to their chosen course it is time to fill out a UCAS application form (which is essentially an application through UCAS to the university or universities of your choice). Once the applications have been processed your child will be contacted by the university or universities to let them know if they have been offered a place (subject to A Level grades) on their course. Once you have all these answers all that remains is to try and keep your children calm while they sit their A Levels! Should your child not get the results they were hoping for, there is a process known as Clearing which they can enter which will match them up with a course based on their grades and preferences. It is important to be supportive of your child during what will obviously be a stressful time.

“To be eligible for a place at one of Lincolnshire’s grammar schools, children must demonstrate that they have reached the required standard for entry as determined by 11 plus testing.”

An Exciting Change of Status for Holbeach Primary School as Holbeach Primary Academy is set to open

Boston Road, Holbeach, Spalding, Lincolnshire PE12 7LZ Telephone 01406 422397 Fax 01406 425986 Enquiries@holbeach.lincs.sch.uk

Following discussions with the University Academy Holbeach, for which the University of Lincoln is sponsor, Holbeach Primary is to adopt academy status and the school will become Holbeach Primary Academy in September 2014. This exciting development will offer the children additional educational opportunities and further strengthen the School’s links with the University of Lincoln and University Academy Holbeach. We have achieved academy status as previously highlighted in Holbeach Today and are currently working closely with the University of Lincoln in preparation for September. As we move towards the new school year, the pupils are very excited as they await their new uniform bearing the new logo. Together with the new uniform will come a fresh and inspirational approach to aspects of our learning through Curriculum 14. Our close links with the University will enhance

the children’s learning and positively influence their aspirations. Holbeach Primary looks forward to September as children and adults alike grasp the opportunities this new venture presents. We welcome our new Early Years children to our school with a new vision where we know they will benefit from this wonderful opportunity. Having highlighted what will change, a range of day-to-day aspects will not. As with any new school year, new staff will be joining our close team. Academy status requires a new Governing Body to be created but we will continue to provide our caring, high quality learning and standards ethos. Look out for information about our opening event in the near future. Have a good summer as we prepare to welcome new pupils of all ages to our school. We wish our Year 6 pupils good luck in their transition to the next phase of education.

Family life

This term our Pre-school class will be exploring the diversity of our families and celebrating our similarities and differences ❱ BY MELANIE FOSTER, MUNCHKINS KINDERGARTEN

Through this project we hope to encourage our children to treat others with the respect, care and understanding that they and their families expect and deserve from others. We have been inspired to explore his topic by being involved in a pilot project run by our Lincolnshire Birth to Five service team, and plan to celebrate our experiences and results with other Early Years settings in the region later in the month. In today’s society there is no such thing as a ‘normal’ family, and during our group sessions we hope to stimulate conversation about how families today come in all shapes and sizes and love us no matter what, even when we behave badly. From making mistakes we are hopefully able to learn and grow into the understanding, unprejudiced, tolerant adults of tomorrow. We feel strongly that no child should ever be made to feel ashamed of their family, and we, as adults may also need to take time to consider our

own pre-conceptions about what families should look like ensuring that we all learn together and from each other. We are looking forwards to lots of fun activities, sharing our special family times and hope to welcome some of our children’s family members into the setting to read some of their favourite stories to us in their own home language.

Pets Corner

A Little Taste Of ‘The Good Life’ Keeping chickens, ducks and geese as pets is a rewarding hobby and increasingly popular, especially when they become friendly and provide you with fresh eggs! Here are some tips for the aspiring pet poultry-keeper.:-

Safe Shelters and Pens Our feathered pets need space to forage and wander, but they must be kept in a secure pen. This is to prevent them escaping, and also to keep foxes out. Dig chicken wire into the ground and curve it outwards to prevent foxes digging beneath. Always shut poultry safely inside when they begin to roost at sundown - don’t wait until it gets dark. Ensure that the pen is kept clean and free from rotting food too, otherwise rodents will move in.

Keeping Chickens A couple of hens scratching around your garden may lead to fat yellow eggs for breakfast, but you need to put in some work first. Their main diet should consist of a good quality laying pellet, with the right minerals and vitamins. Supplement pellets with fresh greens, and let them forage as far as possible. Chickens need both insoluble grit (which is held in the gizzard to grind up food) and soluble grit such as calcium rich oyster-shell; otherwise you’ll get soft eggshells that fall apart in your hands. Rooke’s Pet Products stock a wide range of chicken feed, just pop in and speak to one of the helpful and knowledgeable members of staff. Wood-shavings and loose straw should be placed on their shelter’s flooring, so they can keep dry if it’s wet outside. Don’t forget to provide plenty of fresh water every day.

Keeping Ducks Ducks also require a good quality pellet diet as a base, but they should also be able to forage around water. A paddling pool or pond deep enough for them to swim in will make two or three ducks very happy, so make sure you can provide the right environment for them. Bear in mind that unless you have runner ducks, they may fly off unless their wings are clipped!

“Enjoy your new pets, but don’t forget to consider your neighbours. A cockerel crow at sunrise is only romantic in the movies!”

Keeping Geese Some geese are a bit larger than chicken and ducks, so their pens should reflect their size. Again, pellets are their staple diet, alongside green vegetables and fruit supplements. Given room to graze, geese will keep your lawn short for you. They also make noisy ‘guard-dogs’ as they can show aggression towards strangers.

Three Tops Tips! 1 - Our feathered friends are flock animals, so it’s best to keep two or three together. 2 - Chickens, ducks and geese will try most foods, but keep bread to a minimum, or they will become overweight or stop laying. 3 - With all these birds you’ll find some more friendly and good natured than others (even chickens can get grumpy when you “steal” their eggs), so treat them with respect at all times!

Family days out

Family Days Out ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

With the summer holidays now just a couple of weeks away you don’t need to travel too far to have a great day out

W

Railways Who doesn’t love a ride behind a big old steam engine? The Nene Valley Railway run trips throughout the summer which can be enjoyed whatever the weather. To learn a bit more about the railway lines in the area, pay a visit to the Heckington Steam Railway museum and Rocks by Rail at the Rutland Railway museum. Rocky by Rail is a working museum so you can take a trip back in time to see what the industrial landscape of the area used to look like.

hether we are in for record hot temperatures or a wet and windy summer there is plenty to do indoors and outdoors. We take a look at days out in the area to keep you busy!

Cooling off in the heat

To escape the heat of the day and cool off visit a swimming pool. There are different types of pool in the area, from m standard swimming to leisure pools and heated outdoor pools. For a good swim head to Spalding or Boston pools, for fun and a splash around visit Stamford or Bourne Leisure Pools, or to not miss a second of the sun it’s Bourne Outdoor Pool.

Active Days

If you love to stay active and want a day out to please the whole family then there are several venues which fit the bill. If the weather is good then Tallington Lakes offers so many activities you might like to consider taking advantage of their caravan and camp site and making a weekend of it! Activities there include water skiing, wakeboarding, jet skiing, dinghy sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and zorbing. Away from the water you can take advantage of their dry ski slope and climbing wall. The Off Limits centre in Grantham is a little further out but they offer a different range of outdoor activities such as archery, quad biking, Segway experiences and family treasure hunts. Rutland Cycling gives you the opportunity to hire a bike and cycle around the beautiful Rutland Water. There plents of pubs and cafes to stop at along the way to help keep those energy levels up! Whaplode’s Maze in Maize chooses a different theme each year – pit your wits against the maze but remember to wear sensible footwear…

Animals and Birds

If learning about wildlife and getting your hands dirty is

your thing then there is plenty to keep you occupied. At Baytree Owl Centre and Parrot Zoo Boston you can see birds you wouldn’t normally find in your garden! You can also try your luck spotting birds at the RSPB reserve at Frampton Marsh. Leisure Cruises at Boston Marina operate seal and birdwatching tours. At Oslinc Ostrich Farm in Moorby near Boston you not only get the chance to see the ostriches on the farm but at the end of the tour you can visit the farm shop and buy an ostrich burger! Pigeons Farm and Sacrewell Farm let you get up close to some less exotic animals – enjoying the outdoors and learning about animals and their environments. Farms continue to be a popular choice for families and rightly so – they offer something for everyone. If catching rather than looking appeals to you the Ashleigh Lakes welcomes families and dogs to their fishing lakes. Have a competition to see who can catch the biggest fish! There is a chance to try out before the holidays, book a stay in June (be quick!!) and receive 17% off pitch and hook-up fees.

Local Places of Interest and History

We are very lucky to live in an area steeped in history so have amazing buildings and places of interest. Burghley House with its Gardens of Surprise and Grimsthorpe Castle along with the Grimsthorpe Festival on the August Bank Holiday are great places to while away the day. Having a picnic in Bourne Woods followed by a long walk under a leafy canopy is a great activity on a hot day. There are also many windmills in the area– Maud Foster Windmill Boston, Heckington Windmill and Moulton Windmill are all open to visitors.

Wet Weather

If we do find ourselves facing a few days of wet weather then it’s time to try these indoor activities. Stamford Corn Exchange, Blackfriars Boston and the South Holland Centre run family friendly performances and workshops throughout the summer so check local listings for dates and times. They also screen films along with Showcase Cinemas in Peterborough and West End Cinema in Boston. Boston Bowl, Alleykatz Spalding and Laser Storm Spalding all give you the chance to burn off the energy built up from having to stay indoors! On Saturdays there is also a Roller Disco at the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding. For the younger ones there is soft play at Fun Farm Spalding, Playbarn Spalding, Playtowers Boston, Fuzzy Eds Boston, Rascals Fun Factory Stamford and Let’s Play Bourne. Show off your artistic flair by painting ceramics. Pots of Fun Stamford, Pots of Fun Boston, Doodles Pottery and Painting Spalding and Paint a Pot Bourne all offer you the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and create a personalised gift or a keepsake. Maximise your space ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

These days space really is at a premium. Rather than moving house, many people are choosing to stay put and maximise the space they have

E

xtending, converting or being smarter with the existing space, we take a look at the most popular choices – loft and garage conversions, conservatories and smart hints and tips for those nooks and crannies!

Garages

It is often much cheaper to convert existing space than having to physically knock down walls and extend your property. Provided you have a decent size driveway the garage is your easiest bet, be it internal or external. As an internal garage will provide you with a new downstairs room it is perfect for a multitude of uses – a dining room, home office, playroom or even a utility room. A large exterior garage can be converted and, with a couple of stud walls, can make an acceptable sized granny flat. The major works which will take place with an internal garage conversion are the floor and walls and windows. Due to old fire regulations you might find your floor will need to be raised. Your floor and walls will need to be protected from damp and insulated. These days this is often done via the use of stud walls so as to minimise the disruption. You will also need to replace the garage door with a window. To make it blend in with the house try to choose windows which are the same as the rest of the house and ask your builder if he can source bricks which are the same colour as the rest of the house. The good news with garage conversions is that, in general, they do not require planning permission although it is always best to check as there are certain restrictions. It will also leave your council tax band unaffected.

Lofts

If you have enough room in your loft (ensure you have at least 2.3 metres of headroom) then a loft conversion can create a huge space in your home. Costs for converting a loft can be much higher so it is always best to begin with a company who has experience in the area. South Lincs Consulting are able to assist in all aspects of planning so they are a good first port of call. They will not only be able to advise as to the best use of the space but will know the best places for en-suites, storage space and staircases. If you are planning an en-suite find out from a plumber first if your current system can handle it! When pricing up, remember to add in the price of Dormer or Velux windows. Freeing up so much space gives you a great choice of what to do with the space. While most people opt to turn it into a master bedroom there are also an increasing number of people who turn it into home office space as it is far enough away to block 38 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

“If you are considering changing your boiler then Able Energy in Boston can talk you through your options.”

out all of the hustle and bustle downstairs!! Planning permission is not normally required unless you are extending the space.

Conservatories

Provided you leave enough room to build a decent sized conservatory it can be used as a functional room all year round rather than just during the warmer months. The proposed use for your conservatory will dictate its size – if you want a large dining table in there then you will need more space than if you want a playroom with a couple of toyboxes! Once you have decided on usage and are comfortable with how much of your garden you are going to lose double check that the size of the conservatory won’t be disproportionate to the size of the house. At the end of the day it needs to look good as well as providing more space. As a conservatory is at ground level you will not need planning permission. Make sure you use a company who have experience with conservatories – Pyramid Home Improvements in Moulton Seas End are able to advise and assist with design.

Kitchens

There are two trains of thought here – making better use of the space you have or starting again with a new kitchen. If you opt to try and do better in your current kitchen then look at smart storage solutions and make sure you use all areas - from the insides of cupboard doors to hanging a magnetic strip by your cooker for knives and utensils. A new kitchen offers all sorts of modern design solutions and is also one of the quickest ways to also add value to your home so well worth considering. Make an appointment with a bespoke kitchen designer such as Spalding Luxury Kitchens and you will be amazed what they can squeeze into the smallest of spaces. There are even kitchens which utilise the space behind the kickboards!

Nooks and Crannies

There are areas in your house which you may not even think about which you could utilise. The most overlooked is the cupboard under the stairs. Generally used as a dumping ground for coats, vacuum cleaners and ironing boards you could either use it more wisely for storage or even change its usage to become a downstairs toilet. As we change from traditional to combi-boilers, airing cupboards are becoming redundant. What could you do with such a large cupboard space? Or perhaps you could rip it out altogether and use the space for something different. If you are considering changing your boiler then Able Energy in Boston can talk you through your options.

Gardening

Keeping your lawn in great condition during the summer ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

What is summer in the garden for, if not for sitting, relaxing and enjoying the fruits of your labours?

“During periods which are particularly dry try not to cut your lawn at all.”

U

nfortunately, your lawn requires some serious maintenance over the summer months so we’ve put together our top tips for maintaining a lush lawn. Follow this simple advice this summer and ensure your lawn stays green and healthy: Believe it or not, when the weather starts to get really hot grass growth begins to slow down. In hot weather don’t be tempted to mow the lawn very short, as a guide don’t remove more than a third of the length of the grass in a single cut. By only removing a small amount not only will it neaten your lawn but your grass won’t need to find large amounts of energy in the hot weather in order to continue growing. Rather than having a weekly routine, judge when your lawn needs mowing based on how fast the lawn is growing at any given time. If the weather is right for your lawn you might notice a big growth spurt meaning you will have to cut it more than once in a week to keep it in optimum condition. During periods which are particularly dry try not to cut your lawn at all. You may notice that after a long spell without rain the colour of your lawn changes from green to brown. If you can bear it, try not to water the lawn once the rain returns so will the condition of your lawn. Conversely, if you have just laid or sown a lawn ensure it is well watered through dry spells. When you do water make sure that the ground is really soaked for the best results as it will allow the water to reach the roots. Make sure the temperature is cool when you do this, with evening being the best time. For the best appearance, keep an eye on your borders! Use a half-moon edging tool around the edges of your lawn. Keep the areas around your fences clear

42 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

using a trimmer. Watch out for weeds! Weeds in your lawn should be treated using a selective herbicide. Make sure if you have pets that it will not pose a threat to them. If herbicides aren’t your thing then there is nothing to stop you pullilng the weeds out by hand. Just make sure that you always pull weeds out by the root otherwise they will be back in no time at all! And don’t forget the critters! Whilst you are busy protecting your plants, fruit and vegetables from pests many people forget to check their lawns are clear. Be especially aware of the following: Ants - Tunnelling under your lawn creates ant hills. As with herbicides, if you use pesticides then make sure they are safe for any pets or children playing in the garden. If in doubt then seek professional advice. Bees - Miner bees are diggers and will dig under your lawn to make their nests. They are harmless but can be an inconvenience. Chafer bug - Also known as the June bug due to the time of year it hatches. The bug itself is harmless but its larvae feed on the roots of your grass. Crane flies and leatherjackets - Also known as the daddy longlegs. You’ll find your damage when wildlife rips up your lawn to eat them. Moles - More of a countryside problem than a town one, moles dig under your lawn in search of food. They are notoriously difficult to kill so if you do want to get rid of them then your best bet is to hire a professional exterminator. Worms - This is a tricky one. Worms can be extremely beneficial for your lawn and garden in general however 3 types of worm create worm casts (a small pile of dirt which sits on your lawn). The dirt in itself isn’t too much of a problem but it is an ideal environment for weeds to grow. All you can do in this instance is to brush them away.

Infiniti Q50

Price

The English word ‘infinity’ derives from Latin infinitas, meaning “being without finish” but, in the automotive world, Infiniti’s Q50 is certainly ‘finished’ beautifully

T

he car, launched in 2013, is the latest entrant in the mid-size premium class to compete against rivals such as the Audi A4 and BMW 3

Series. The four-door, rear-wheel-drive saloon, tested here in 2.2 diesel SE Premium trim, comes with a high level of standard equipment. Sparkling LED lighting is used in the rear light units, the front fog lights and the turn indicators in the door mirrors. Scratch-shield paint is even used to ensure unwanted minor scrapes simply disappear, whilst chrome-trimmed twin exhaust pipes and halogen daytime running lights enhance the Q50’s sporting presence. Step inside and the two front compartments are separated by a distinctive design line that runs through the centre console. The dashboard features twin touch screens along with a fully customisable digital environment. Audio is provided by a six-speaker system featuring a CD player, Bluetooth streaming, USB/iPod connectivity and voice-operated control. The ideal temperature in the cabin is vigilantly maintained by a dual-zone climate control system which features autorecirculation for when the outside air may not be quite so clean. The rear seats feature a 60/40 split and a ski hatch to allow for

any extra storage capacity requirements. A multi-function leather-bound steering wheel is also included along with leathertrimmed, heated seats. Behind the wheel, there’s an overriding sensation of luxury. In fact, the Infiniti feels more extravagant than many of the mile munching BMWs, Mercs and Audis it’s pitched against. However, there’s an initial diesel clatter on start up, and that sounds louder than some of the Q50’s German rivals. No great shakes though as on the move a sense of calm prevails. The car glides through its automatic gears seamlessly. Without doubt, if you’re after a relaxing commute you could drive all day enveloped in opulence without needing to ruffle any feathers. In contrast, if you like a little spice injected into your journey then you can change the car’s character by pressing the ‘sport’ mode button. This tightens up the Q50’s drivetrain and chassis, turning it into a majestic missile. It will accelerate vigorously and take corners more precisely than before, shaking things up for you on your otherwise monotonous commute to the office. Other drive settings include ‘snow’ and ‘personal’. The former makes the Infiniti behave more obediently in wintry weather and the latter tunes the car into your own driving style.

£29,500 on the road

The fitment of cruise control, speed limiter, stop start, hill start assist, rear view camera, rain sensing wipers and keyless entry make the Q50 easy to live with. It’s also a very safe vehicle. Safety systems include vehicle dynamic control, including active trace and traction control, tyre pressure warning and brake assist. Indeed, according to the latest tests carried out by Thatcham, the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre, the Q50 has proved itself to have one of the most advanced standard fit collision avoidance systems that the Centre has ever tested. Together with its recently announced five star Euro NCAP rating the Infiniti Q50 is easily one of the safest cars on the road. Your Horoscope

Astro Stars Aries

 Leo

This month offers you the opportunity to put things into their final resting place after months of turbulence about “what’s yours and what’s not”. You seek independence and freedom from old habits, restrictions in business and personal relationships. You have the urge to please others, but are hesitant as you don’t wish to upset or offend and find it easier to “sit on the fence” but if you use tact and diplomacy this could balance out or you’ll discover that there is no peace in compromise!

Taurus

Artistic pursuits are highlighted and you develop a keen appreciation of the value of things, including the money it takes to buy them, but you still might go and treat yourself to that luxury item as “it will be long lasting” and be appreciated by all! Romantic tendencies, flirtations and love come to the fore and you want to make a good impression on others, especially of the romantic kind. However, guard against allowing your feelings to run away with you as you may become obsessional with the subject of your desires.

Gemini A time when you may acknowledge or yearn about the past, but it’s time to make different choices and move forward. Around the 14th, the Full Moon is in your opposite sign, indicates that your attention is drawn to relationships which will be important. From 17th you are carefully going over previous events, issues or agreements and amending or altering them where necessary.

Cancer

The New Moon starts your month by retreating from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A possible romantic attachment to a person who shares the same views may present themselves around 14th. The Full Moon on the 14th attention is focused on projects, holidays or leisure pursuits and a time you may meet new people who are adventurous, highly spirited or connected to overseas. With the New Moon on the 27th in your own sign of Cancer, perfect time to focus on the home, family, security and loved ones.

❱ BY SANDY DAVIES

Sagittarius

It’s time for more involvement with other people, a time for gathering information and a time where you are a social “butterfly” with friends, groups, and clubs . The period around the 14th is all about being adventurous towards creative projects, leisure pursuits, holidays or social activities. A holiday romance may begin, or a current relationship may plan that long awaited trip to distant shores. Family is important at the end of the month.

Virgo

Family matters have been important but so has socialising with friends and you are now trying to balance the two. You are yearning for the past and wishing you had made different choices, it is time to release these feelings and move forward. From 17th you are reviewing your options towards your career, but forthcoming events are outside your control, you just need to think quickly, be flexible and adapt to any opportunities that are presented to you.

Libra

Capricorn

From the 12th there may be problems on how you feel loved by friends, or intimate relationships. You need to re-examine and determine exactly what your duties or obligations are to them. A hobby with friends may turn into a creative joint project making you deeply motivated and driven towards success.

Around the 9th shows you are confident, charismatic and loving, giving big and generous gifts or you may receive them. Your money sense is strong as you look at the best financial investment, mortgage or joint loans available. You may have a crush on someone and feel a “fated” moment has arrived, but beware as it could become compulsive, intense and somewhat obsessional. If you are already in a romantic partnership you may feel trapped as you can’t be “just you”. Around the 12th a partnership could be facing a difficult time, whether this is a romantic or financial one.

Scorpio

Full Moon on the 13th shows that previous attention has been on and around your family and home and you’re now looking for a bit of “me” time, but from the 16th July all will be back to normal. Around the 18th you may possibly travel with business or through work connections, plus opportunities will benefit you in a positive way. This is a social and enjoyable time.

Aquarius

The New moon starts off the month with you wanting approval and feedback from others regarding your creative ideas or hobbies. Romantic inclinations may happen in a quick, sudden and unexpected way which completely surprises you, or you surprise another with your bold actions. From 25th being impatient with documents or communications may cause errors and you might be challenged in some way. Forewarned is forearmed!

Pisces It’s all about you this month, your appearance, physical well being, identity, personal matters, and so on. You are in such a dreamy state of mind and seeing things through “rose tinted glasses”. I don’t think this is a bad thing, sometimes we all just need to relax or concentrate on ourselves, once in a while! On the 29th your creative instincts will come to the fore or you may wish to lend your support to people or organisations in the creative field.

You may feel backed into a corner around the 12th, where your “points of view” are manipulated, it looks like you want to take action, but it might be wise to think before you leap! From 28th, new projects or activities that involve the family and/or home, take centre stage and you may feel a renewed sense of energy. It might also involve a big family adventure to distant shores.

Using your birth time not your sun sign, to predict forthcoming events which are unique to you! Order a 3 month, 6 month or 12 month report from £20.00 Contact me on 07966 307360 Email: astrodegrees@btinternet.com SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |
