Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

Welcome

to the April issue Hello! It’s great to be back at the helm after 10 months away, Vicky has done a fantastic job of keeping you all updated with the local news and information whilst I have been away having my baby. Little Stanley is now 10 months old and crawling, so I’ve had to develop eyes in the back of my head. Life as a working mum certainly presents some challenges at times – whether that’s an unwanted 3am wakeup call with a deadline the next day or missing out on an activity you both enjoy but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I will keep you all updated on his progress over the coming months – for now here’s us on a cold March day at Pigeon’s Farm! Back to the job in hand and the April issue – this edition is full of Spring. We guide you through setting up your own vegetable patch at home, talk to The Caravan and Camping Club about towing, a must read if you’re thinking of buying a caravan this year and we also met with Velo One Cycling Team to find out about the club. Without giving too much away – keep an eye out for the next issue as we are making some changes to the magazine. We have conducted research with you, our readers and listened to what you would like to see in Simply Spalding and you will hopefully be pleased with our new look and content. For now though, enjoy the issue.

Hayley

Local Trust and College Build Internet Owl Tower to Help Endangered Wildlife The Len Pick Trust and New College Stamford have worked together to complete a milestone conservation project for endangered bird life. In response to declining nesting activity, the project sought to build a tower using recycled materials salvaged from a previously demolished barn, to encourage breeding of owls and kestrels. With support from Carpentry, Electrical and Bricklaying students from New College Stamford, the new Owl and Kestrel tower has been constructed on farmland in Dyke, and as the tower will not be accessible to the public, the build has been commissioned to include a live internet feed. The Len Pick Trust worked together with camera experts Wildlife Windows to provide the capability to transmit live images of the nesting box, via the trust website, during active nesting seasons in the future. So the progress of the Dyke owls will be available for all to follow. It has been a fantastic opportunity for the students to gain first-hand experience in traditional building techniques using 100-year-old bricks in a now little seen Flemish bond. Bob Sheppard, Lincolnshire adviser for the Barn Owl Conservation Network, oversaw the tower build and ensured the location and setting gave the best opportunity for this much loved, but endangered species to breed. He said, “2015 was a difficult season for the owl community with little nesting activity. We may not see any residents in the new tower this spring, but this is a long term conservation project, so I am confident they will arrive as the tower and the location is perfect”. Charles Houseago, Chair of the Len Pick

Special thanks to William and Antoinette Ash for providing the location and assisting in putting the infrastructure in place for the future internet connectivity. Also a big thank you to Boss Cabins, leaders in design and manufacture of portable cabins who are based in Bourne, for donating the use of a crew cabin for the duration of the project.” The completion of the tower was marked with a celebratory opening to say thank you to all involved in making this community conservation project a success. Health trainer service restructuring under way A restructuring effort has begun to try to retain a Lincolnshire-based health service which has suffered a funding blow. Lincolnshire County Council Public Health has given three months notice that it is to cease funding the Lincolnshire health trainer service. Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) delivers the service in Boston, South Holland and South Kesteven. David Fannin, Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) chief executive, said: “Of course we are disappointed. The risk of developing diseases that are affected by lifestyle, and the benefits of healthy eating and exercise for people vulnerable to diabetes and dementia, are widely recognised. We have a core group of qualified health trainers who have made a big difference to a lot of people’s lives over the years. We are working on a new

business model and are determined to make sure the knowledge, skills and experience of the health trainers is not lost in Lincolnshire.” Health trainers help their clients to assess their lifestyles and wellbeing, set goals for improving their health, agree action-plans, and provide practical support and information that will help people to change their behaviour. In the last financial year (2014-2015), 582 clients completed a personal health plan with LCVS health trainers working with a health trainer on a one-to-one basis for six to eight weeks to address their own specific hurdles to health. Last year, Lincolnshire County Council funded the LCVS health trainer service with £240,000 from the public health budget. LCVS employs ten people in health trainer roles, including one senior officer who works

across all three districts and, in a mixture of full and part time roles – three in South Holland; four in Boston and two in South Kesteven. All those staff have been told they are now at risk of redundancy. It is hoped alternative funding will be found to retain at least some of the positions. No new clients are currently being taken on, but LCVS is maintaining a list of those who wish to access the service. LCVS health trainers also deliver specific project work and projects it has already been commissioned to deliver will be honoured. They include a planned programme of courses in Boston to help older people get and stay active, funded by Boston Big Local; a pre-diabetes education programme funded by South Lincs CCG, Boston Borough Council and Lincolnshire County Council; and a programme of courses to support people with dementia and their carers.

Meet the buyer hailed a success

Pride Officer is reducing litter A drive to reduce litter from the district’s streets continues with a dedicated officer employed as part of the Pride In South Holland campaign. Pride Officer Dave Rodwell’s main job is to report littering, dog fouling and fly-tipping but he will also focus on encouraging people to use litter bins, especially when disposing cigarettes. His efforts have already met with a positive response. Dave said: “The role is all about educating rather than enforcing and I’m finding that people are starting to recognise and approach me. “We are determined to keep the streets free of cigarette butts and litter and by actively speaking to people we hope the message is getting across.

“It’s all about engaging and empowering the public, we’re not here to police people or point the finger. “I personally enjoy getting out and meeting new people, so it’s a perfect job for me. Anyone who spots me out and about is welcome to come over for a chat.” Roger Gambba-Jones, portfolio holder for waste management, said: “The Pride in South Holland campaign has already enjoyed much success but we’re not resting on our laurels. “Our Pride officer combined with our recently-acquired Glutton cleaning machine will be ensuring that litter is reduced.” For more information about the Pride in South Holland campaign visit www.sholland. gov.uk

A special networking event giving local businesses the chance to understand about opportunities for working with South Holland District Council has been hailed as a success. The first ever ‘Meet the Buyer’ event took place at the South Holland Centre in Spalding on February 24 and was attended by over 80 people. Organised by the council’s Economic Development Team, the event gave business representatives the opportunity to learn about winning contracts to provide goods and services for the authority, as well as taking part in some valuable networking. Cllr Nick Worth, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Business Growth, said: “We’ve already had a lot of positive feedback from firms who attended and I’m confident that the event has created the potential for future working relationships. “Our teams were able to find out more about the businesses that are out there which are offering new and exciting ideas, services, and ways of operating, which could help us further enhance our services and become more efficient and effective. “We are particularly keen to spend as much money as possible within the local economy, and this kind of event helps to dispel some of the myths about it being difficult to sell to the Council.” Several businesses which attended the event said they found it extremely beneficial. Ark ICT Solutions said: “This was a really great way to meet the right people in one easy setting.” Chatterton’s Solicitors said: “We found this event very useful. It gave us a great insight into how the Council works and the processes that are involved. The networking sessions were also very good.” Infotel Solutions said: “This was a well organised event with excellent communication beforehand.” SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Historic manuscript goes on display An historic manuscript charting the details of Lincolnshire families over hundreds of years has gone on display at Ayscoughfee Hall Museum. The museum is currently displaying a range of items belonging to the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, focussed on the recently acquired manuscript. The piece is an 18th century manuscript titled ‘Armes and Memoires of ffamilies in Lincolnshire’ compiled by Maurice Johnson of Ayscoughfee Hall. The striking green and gold document depicts the genealogies of a number of renowned Lincolnshire families. It is believed to date from the 1710s or 1720s and features beautifully written and illustrated entries for various local families, presumably known to Maurice Johnson. Over 200 families are listed, some of whose histories are traced back to the eleventh century. The exhibition also features an index of names which visitors are able to search, and also to order facsimile copies of pages from the Society,

which they hope will help genealogical researchers visiting Spalding. Cllr Gary Taylor, SHDC portfolio holder for Arts Development, said: “Anyone who has a passion for local history will be fascinated by this exhibition which has already attracted much interest.” A spokesperson for Spalding Gentlemen’s Society said: “The Council of the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society would like to extend a special thanks to the Friends of the National Libraries, whose generous support enabled the Society to purchase ‘Armes and Memoires of Ffamilies in Lincolnshire in 2014’. The objects displayed show the broad range of collections held by the Society, which are accessible by appointment and at the Society’s open Sundays, held on the third Sunday of the winter months. The exhibition is open until the end of March. Admission is free. For more information and opening times at Ayscoughfee Hall museum visit www.sholland.gov.uk.

Air Cadets In Big Blue Parade for Their 75th Anniversary Air Cadets from 1406 (Spalding) Squadron were joined by other squadrons from the Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Air Cadet Organisation. An unprecedented number of 750 cadets and 75 uniformed staff paraded through the City of Ely yesterday. This parade, the largest in the Wing’s history, was led by cadets of the Wing Band. Squadrons usually meet others in their sector, celebrating what is known as “ATC Sunday” on the anniversary of the formation. For the 75th anniversary, Wing Commander Tony Kelly had a much more ambitious vision. Gathering so many cadets and staff for one parade has been “an opportunity for the whole Wing to come together to start a year of celebration and pride in our achievements”. Cadet Gale from 2500 St Neots Squadron echoed the thoughts of many young cadets at the parade. “It’s so exciting! Everyone looking, thinking they look smart, and wow, they’re good”. 6 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing Padre, Roger Cresswell, held a service which included an excerpt from the memories of Peter Price, an Air Cadet who lived in the south of England during the Battle of Britain. These nostalgic tales form part of the Corps’ history and helped today’s cadets understand what it was like to be an Air Cadet 75 years ago. At such an auspicious occasion, it was the perfect time to dedicate the new Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing Banner which was revealed for the first time at Ely Cathedral. Cadet Warrant Officer Morgan of 1003 Leighton Buzzard squadron commented “today has been a massive highlight in my career as a cadet. Accompanying the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire and seeing the new Wing banner with so many cadets was fantastic.” Each Squadron also paraded their own banner. For Corporal Ahmed of 2465 Luton Icknield Squadron, this was his first time as Banner Bearer at such a public event. He felt “privileged but a little

nervous”. Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenants for Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, Helen Nellis and Sir Hugh Duberly KCVO CBE, took the salute and met with the cadets at a reception. Helen Nellis is enthusiastic in her support of the cadet organisations. “Ask the average teen what they did at the weekend, and they spent most of it playing video games. Ask an Air Cadet and they’ve been on an exercise, doing something for charity, shooting or flying. It helps them learn so many transferrable skills to take into adult life.” They were supported by Her Majesty’s High Sheriffs for Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire as well over a dozen Mayors or Deputy Mayors from across the Wing area. Also attending were two former Commandant Air Cadets - Air Commodores Jon Ford and Jon Chitty, Station Commanders from local Royal Air Force bases, Squadron Padres and members of many Squadron’s Civilian Committees.

If you would like to contact Nick with a specific question, please email info@simplyspalding.co.uk

Nick Worth, The Deputy Leader of South Holland District Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages As many people from Holbeach will be aware there have been two major planning applications that will see 1,800 houses built over the next twenty years. Infrastructure is key to ensuring Holbeach prospers as it continues to grow and the first of those major infrastructure projects will get underway towards the end of this year with the building of two new roundabouts. Once complete this will reduce heavy traffic through the town and improve the flow from the A151 onto the A17. Just as important are contributions to education and health, the latter of which I will cover more in this article. I have recently organised a meeting between the two medical practices in Holbeach and the two Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) to discuss their plans for the future, bearing in mind the extra pressures that will be put on the service as a result of the planning applications. Ideally the ratio for doctor / patients should be around 1:1500 people but in our area this is closer to 1:1900 and possibly a bit more. Both practices would consider working together under one roof and have put their ideas for such a facility to the CCGs for consideration and costing purposes. This will be a very large facility with clinical consulting rooms, treatment rooms, dispensary and offices and will need in the region of 60 car parking spaces if it goes ahead. The cost is likely to be in the millions, so whether it is affordable, ( 106 planning agreements also cover contributions to new schools, the roundabouts, the town centre, green space, cycleways and affordable homes to name a few) and whether there is the space in the centre of town, we will have to wait and see, because this will ultimately be a decision for the CCGs in conjunction with the NHS. Of course the real issue will not be the building, but the lack of doctors and recruitment not just in Lincolnshire, but nationally continues to be a major issue.

While on the subject of health, the Director of Public Health has just published his annual report on the health of the people of Lincolnshire. In past years this has covered a variety of health issues from obesity and diabetes to heart disease. This year’s report covers just one issues – Liver Disease. Liver disease is one of five leading causes of death in people under 75, regarded as premature deaths. All other major causes of premature death have steadily fallen over the past half century, but deaths from liver disease have risen by 500% for those under the age of 65 and therefore merits special attention. The three main causes of liver disease are Alcohol, obesity and viral hepatitis. Of these, excessive alcohol consumption is the biggest concern. New guidelines suggest no more than 14 units a week for men and women.

To help tackle liver disease will need a multi-agency approach that will involve county and district councils, CCGs, health and social care providers, the community and voluntary sector and of course the public. Districts in particular have a role to play through planning, licensing and environmental health as well as providing more green space for play and activities to help reduce obesity, one of the causes of liver disease. I am pleased to say that South Holland District Council have recently purchased Moulton Park which will increase our green space in the district and help towards that healthier living and quality of life agenda.

e all have an opinion about crime in our area and what we would like to be done about reducing it. Every police force up and down the country has different priorities when it comes to tackling crime and in rural areas the challenges can be varied. Back in 2012 elections for the new post of Police and Crime Commissioner were held, effectively installing a figurehead for each police force who would be answerable to the people in their area. Police and Crime Commissioners are elected representatives who oversee how crime is tackled in a police force area. Their aim is to cut crime and to ensure the police force is effective. On May 5th this year, each of the 41 police forces in England and Wales outside of London will directly elect a commissioner who will be responsible for: - Working with Chief Constables to set the direction for policing and holding them

to account for delivery of policing within local communities. They do not manage the force on a day-to-day basis and nor are they directly responsible for police operations. -

MAY 5th 2016

Deciding policing strategy and the force budget. - Setting the council tax precept (that is, how much of our council tax goes towards policing). Working with local authorities, community safety partnerships and local criminal justice boards. - Addressing national issues as well as local concerns. - Commissioning services to meet the needs of victims. - Taking a holistic approach to community safety which brings in the services of all agencies which have a contribution to make to keeping local communities safe. Incumbent Alan Hardwick is retiring from his post and so will not be seeking re-election but has said in interviews that he feels his time as commissioner has seen a positive effect on the management of crime, that the post is a worthwhile one and that the foundations he has laid can be built upon by his successor.

Three political parties have candidates standing in the elections and they are:

Victoria Ayling – UKIP candidate

Marc Jones – Conservative candidate

Lucinda Preston – Labour Candidate

Candidate Statements will be published on April 13th which will allow you to see what these people are prioritising as well as what they hope to achieve during their tenure. Via these statements, their websites and social media you will be able to see if their views on crime in our area match your own and if you feel they will be able to follow through on their promises. If you’ve ever had an opinion on crime then make sure you head to the polling booths on May 5th.

Advice

Buying from an overseas seller in Europe What are your consumer rights if you buy goods or services from a country within Europe and what can you do if something goes wrong with what you’ve bought What to do if goods you buy are faulty If goods are faulty you may be able to get a repair, replacement, refund or reduction in cost. This depends on the law in the country where the trader is based. If you have a problem with goods you bought: • stop using the goods • find your proof of purchase. A credit card statement, till receipt or confirmation of your order will do • if the goods in question are dangerous, you should report the matter to the Citizens Advice. The adviser may report the dangerous goods to Trading Standards, although Trading Standards won’t be able to get involved in your individual complaint

Your rights when you buy in Europe If you buy goods or services from a country within the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA), the consumer law of that country will apply to you. This will be very similar to UK law. The areas where your consumer rights are most similar are: • unsafe or dangerous goods • faulty goods • package holidays • overbooking, delays and cancellations of air transport • misleading advertisements for goods or services • buying by internet, mail order, telephone or TV. • air travel • buying by internet, mail order, telephone or TV Finding out where the trader is based If you buy goods online, your rights usually come under UK law unless the trader states that they are trading from another country. The trader should say which country they are trading from and which law applies. Check their website or it may tell you in the contract terms and conditions they send you. There may be an address or telephone number on their website which gives you a clue to which country they are trading from. If in doubt, ask the trader before you buy. European Union (EU) member countries To check which countries are members of the European Union, see the Europa website www.europa.eu/about-eu European Economic Area (EEA) countries EEA countries include all those in the EU plus Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Check your terms and conditions or contract When you bought the goods or services you may have been given a contract or terms and conditions. These should contain information about your rights, such as cancellation or delivery rights. They may also tell you what to do if you have a complaint. If you bought services, the EC Services Directive says you should receive certain information about who you bought from and the terms and conditions of the service. If you bought by internet, TV, phone or mail

order, you should have received certain written information about your rights. Complain to the trader Your first action should be to complain to the trader by phone or in writing. If you paid by credit or with a debit card If you paid for the goods on credit or with a debit card, you might find it easier to make a claim against the credit or debit company instead of the trader. The goods must usually have cost more than £100 and not more than £30,000, although you don’t need to have put the full purchase price on your card. Organisations that deal with complaints about EU consumer matters If the trader does not agree with your complaint and is not part of a scheme that offers a dispute resolution service, there are other organisations which may be able to help you. European Consumer Centres There is a network of European Consumer Centres (ECC) in all EU member states including Iceland and Norway. They can: • provide information and help on problems with goods and services • help you sort out your complaint by speaking to the trader on a your behalf. The UK European Consumer Centres are run by the Trading Standards Institute. Contact them if your complaint to the trader has not been successful and you want advice on what to do next. by Cassandra Clare

Jim Francis has finally found the perfect life. A successful painter and sculptor, he lives quietly with his wife, Melanie, and their two young daughters in California. But Francis has a very dark past, with another identity and a very different set of values. As he returns to his native Scotland for a funeral, Melanie discovers something gruesome in California, which indicates that her husband’s violent past might also be his psychotic present, things start to go very bad, very quickly. The most terrifying character in Trainspotting returns with his own novel.

The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Calre’s newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the bestselling Mortal Instruments series. It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses. Glitz, glamours and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series.

School News

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Gedney Church End School We are holding a table top sale at St Mary Magdalene Church, Gedney, on Saturday 23rd April 2016 in the hope of raising more funds for the school. We always try our best to give back to the community and for this event all money raised will be split equally between Gedney Church End Primary School and also St Mary Magdalene Church. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Church wardens for their support with this event and for allowing us to hold it in the Church. A big thank you also goes out to the Friends of Gedney School for

arranging and organising this event. The Church will be open for you to browse the stalls at your leisure from 10am until 2pm. There will be a variety of stalls on offer as well as refreshments. We have also invited a number of outside companies inviting them to have a stall, allowing us to offer you lots of interesting stalls to look at. There will also be bric and brac stalls, giving you the opportunity to have a spring clear out! The cost for a stall will be £5 and a small entrance fee of 20p per person would be appreciated.

Please may we take this opportunity to ask that if any of you have any tombola items that you are happy to gift us we would be very thankful. We do appreciate your support with this. If you are interested in having a stall at this event please let myself know in the office. Alternatively if you are able to offer help on the day of the event this would be very much appreciated.

Weston Hills CofE Primary School The year seems to be going so fast, it is hard to believe we will be going into Term 5 after Easter. We have just had our whole school production of “Much Ado about Nothing” which was very enjoyable and well received. Mr. Gernert from Act II Theatre Company was our director and producer, and children and staff all had roles to play. A very successful two night run! The Young Shakespeare Company came into school at the start of Term 4 and enthralled our Key Stage 2 children with their adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The PTA have again organised events for us, a Mother’s Day Wrap and PTA Discos have both taken place. Thanks to them for their support.

Children in Class 5 have taken part in “Easter Cracked” at the Baptist Church in Spalding – a very enjoyable annual event. Year 5&6 children will be going to London to visit the Houses of Parliament & go on the London Eye at the end of April, and Year 6 children will be going to PGL Caythorpe Court to take part in a Team Building afternoon on the Challenge Course. They also have a trip arranged to go to the Church Schools Festival in Lincoln in May. Parents evenings will take place before the end of Term 4, and Key Stage 2 SATs week is at the beginning of May. Agilitas have organised several tournaments which our Year 4, 5 & 6 children have participated in: a Dance Showcase, County Athletics Tournament, Volleyball & Hockey.

Spalding High School for Girls A team of six Year 10 Spalding High School students are celebrating after winning at the International Space Challenge in Nottingham. The Space Challenge is a cross-curricular event designed to highlight the opportunities for careers based on the combination of languages and science. Having worked on a design for an innovative Space Hotel the girls delivered their presentation (in French) and it was their excellent teamwork and original and enthusiastic marketing that saw them win the Language Prize. Languages were also celebrated by Year 9 students

St Bartholomew’s Primary School St Bartholomew’s Primary School is a small village school in West Pinchbeck. The children have led many fundraising events over the past year which has helped various charities. The children have taken part in a ‘Yellow Day’ to raise money for the air ambulance charity by wearing something yellow. The school have utilised this service before so the staff and children wanted to show their appreciation. £112 was raised from this event. The children also led various activities in support of Children in Need 2015. The children dressed up as superheroes

in the annual Languages Day. The aim of the activities was to show pupils how speaking a language and understanding a culture other than their own can be an asset for life. Former student Hannah West gave an aspirational presentation about her language learning journey and how this has impacted on her current job at Dynamic Cassette International (DCI). Pupils also enjoyed taster sessions in Spanish, Russian and Greek and learned about our French and German Assistants’ home areas. A busy term also saw months of hard work and dedication to training coming to fruition for gymnasts at Spalding High School. The Under 14 and Under

and donated £1. The school council sold wristbands and a cake auction was held after school. In total, they raised £431 during the day. The children and staff of St Bartholomew’s Primary School worked collaboratively with members of their local Parish to create Christingles for the Christingle Service in St Bartholomew’s Church on Sunday 6th December 2015. The children also raised money for the Children’s Society by collecting change in their Christingle candles throughout the week running up to Advent.

19 teams attended East Midlands Floor and Vault competition held at Stamford. Following a tough day with outstanding routines the Under 19’s came second with the Under 14’s taking first place, and will represent county at the National Finals next month. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Pets Corner

A- Tissue! When Pets Make You Sneeze It’s not pleasant for anyone to find themselves allergic to animals. If you sniffle in the presence of fur here are some pet suggestions that won’t cause an allergy Moult-free dogs If asthma is a problem it’s probably best to avoid dogs completely, but poodles, Yorkshire terriers and old English sheepdogs are a few breeds that have been specifically bred to retain their fur. They save a lot of vacuuming time!

Hairless Cats Some breeds like the Sphynx are bred hair-free. They look different but have all the cat characteristics you’d expect. If you choose a hairless cat, keep an eye on their temperature as they can feel the cold. Speak to your vet about the best way to protect their skin.

Reptiles Reptiles require different care to cats and dogs but they’re worth the effort. Specifically reptiles need heat and light to warm their cold blood. Without heat and light they are unable to eat or move and will eventually become severely ill. Check out your electricity costs before committing. • Snake: Corn snakes make harmless and colourful pets. • Bearded dragon: Beardies make great pets for older children but need regular handling to remain tame.

Tortoise: Some breeds of tortoise hibernate in the winter months so you’ll need facilities for that. Tortoises are fascinating creatures best fed on a combination of a dry diet and weeds such as dandelions, plantain and clover.

Build a pond for frogs, toads, dragonflies and every wild creature that needs to drink. If you need any advice come and chat to us in store about suitable pets and their requirements. Pet allergies don’t mean you can’t keep a pet!

Fish You can’t cuddle a fish but they are captivating pets whether they’re kept in a tank or outside in a fish pond. If your fish are kept outside net the pond to prevent cats or herons taking them, and always put a ladder or rock on the pond edge so that hedgehogs can escape if they fall in.

Birds Birds make great companions. Budgies, canaries are cheerful pets that reward good handling and attention, but are not for those who like to sleep in. Once they see the light they’ll start twittering!

Wildlife If you’re not able to keep a pet at all then why not turn your attention to our wildlife? • Buy a few bird feeders and fill them with seeds for feathered friends • Cut a hole in the bottom of your fence for hedgehogs • Set up some insect boxes for bees, butterflies and ladybirds

Velo One Cycling Team

Velo One Cycling Team The new race team and riding club for passionate cyclists

A

s a nation we are a tiny bit addicted to cycling. From enjoying the occasional bike ride to watching the professionals claiming their victories at the Olympics, it’s something we either seem to be doing or watching. Stars like Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish have ushered in a boom of interest, prompting people to get together and form their own cycling groups. Towards the end of last year the Velo One Cycling Team did just that and held their official launch. With the kind support of their sponsors the amateur race team has been created with riders from all over Lincolnshire, looking to compete on the Local, National and World stages. With the season having just started, the team will compete across multiple cycling disciplines including Road Racing, Time Trials, Cycle Cross, Mountain Biking and Track. A quick look at their Facebook page will give you an idea of how busy this small team is. Velo One Cycling was created on the principles of success and fun, team work, encouraging talent and supporting a cause very close to their hearts, JDRF, the charity for sufferers of Type 1 Diabetes. The club has riders, family and friends affected by Type 1 Diabetes and as an Official Supporter one of their aims is to improve awareness through sport. While they are primarily a race team, Velo One is also looking

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

to organise events from rides to evening entertainment via their social arm, “Le Grupetto” which will raise funds for the charity. Many people in Spalding will be aware of the charity through the annual JDRF Charity Ball organised by Gemma Robinson and her team and Velo One are hoping their efforts will build on this awareness. JDRF is the leading global organisation funding Type 1 Diabetes research. Their mission is to accelerate lifechanging breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat Type 1 Diabetes and its complications. While some may not have heard of this charity, JDRF has invested more than £1 billion since its inception. They collaborate

with the most talented minds to develop and deliver a pipeline of innovative therapies to people living with Type 1 Diabetes. Their staff and volunteers across the globe are dedicated to campaigning and their vision of a world without this chronic, life threatening condition. To find out more about the Velo One cycling team visit the website, www. velooncecycling.com or they can be found on social media – for Twitter it’s Velo_OneCycling and on Facebook search for Velo-One Cycling. Caravan & Camping

How to tow a caravan Thanks to improvements in modern tow car and caravan technology, towing a caravan is now safer and less stressful than ever before. In this guide, we explain how to ensure a safe and stable car and caravan outfit match, and how to ensure you stay safe on the road ❱ BY ANDREW ROBSON, THE CARAVAN AND CAMPING CLUB How to load a caravan It is important that before taking to the open road, all windows are securely fastened and loose objects safely stowed away, either in storage in your ‘van or in the rear/boot space of your towing vehicle. Ensure heavier items are located low over the caravan axle. Avoid stashing heavy items in overhead lockers or at the very rear of the caravan. It is illegal to travel in your caravan while it is being towed. All passengers must travel in the towing vehicle. The caravan should ride level or slightly ‘nose down’ when loaded for the road and hitched to the tow car. Don’t overload the

gas locker or interior space at the front of the caravan as this can cause excessive ‘noseweight’, or downward force on the car’s tow ball, and lead to an unsafe towing experience. When travelling downhilll, it is important not to accelerate. An increase in speed can amplify lateral movement of the caravan: this is also referred to as ‘snaking’. How to make sure your ‘van is safe on the road Basic checks must be completed before the start of any journey. These include: checking that the towing electrics and breakaway cable between your tow bar and caravan

are correctly connected; that your caravan’s road lights are working correctly; make sure the tyre pressures are correct on both the ‘van and car and that the jockey wheel is safely stowed and secured in place before the start of any journey. It is worth checking all is secure and working correctly at regular intervals during the course of a trip. Keeping other road users happy Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow-moving vehicle. Check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass. (GOV UK, The Highway Code – Using the road 169).

The Camping and Caravanning Club’s top tips for towing Check your driving licence - if you passed your test before 1 January 1997, you will automatically have a BE category entitlement. This means you can drive car and caravan combinations up to 8250kg. If you passed your test since then, your licence will have categories B and B1, which means the combined maximum weight of the car and caravan, cannot be more than 3500kg. It’s very important to ensure your tow car and caravan are safely matched. Check your car’s kerb weight and its towing limit, and also the maximum weight of the trailer when it’s fully loaded - beginners should tow no more than 85 per cent of the car’s kerb weight to help ensure a safe and stable towing experience on the road. Get a proper number plate made up that matches that of your tow car (i.e., no marker

pen on cardboard), and fix it securely to the caravan or trailer. It must be illuminated at night. Fit towing mirrors to your car when towing. The law says that anyone towing a caravan must be able to see 20 metres behind them and four metres either side of the trailer. To meet this requirement, almost all vehicles need additional towing mirrors. But don’t forget to remove them when you’re not towing - it’s illegal to drive with them on if you don’t need them. Load the caravan carefully when preparing for the road: the heaviest items should be placed on the floor, directly over the axle. Also, try to ensure sufficient ‘noseweight’ on the tow ball. Know your speed limits before towing on the open road: they’re often lower when

you’re towing. Don’t exceed 50mph on single carriageways or 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Also, you may not tow in the furthest right (or ‘outside’) lane of a three-or-more lane motorway, unless instructed to do so. When you’re towing, you’ll need to give yourself more time and space for manoeuvring. Brake earlier, accelerate more slowly, and be conscious of the extra length, width and height of your outfit. You’ll need to take corners more widely than normal, so the back of the caravan doesn’t clip a kerb or cut a corner. Similarly, be aware of height restrictions and overhanging tree branches. Be aware of side winds from lorries, and crosswinds on the open road in turbulent conditions. Also, ease off the accelerator when descending hills - this will help to cut

down on any lateral swaying movement of the caravan behind the car, known as ‘snaking’. When reversing around a corner, onto a caravan pitch or driveway, first turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction to the way you would turn it if you were driving solo. As you reverse, and the caravan begins to turn, turn the steering wheel back in the other direction so the car follows the caravan onto the pitch or into the driveway. The Camping and Caravanning Club run a number of caravan manoeuvring courses up and down the country, which will take you through all you need to know, from hitching up your caravan and car to safe towing and reversing. For details of our manoeuvring courses please visit: www. campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk

Get Your Dog Microchipped …It’s the Law! The Government is bringing in compulsory microchipping for all dogs from 6 April 2016 to help reunite owners with lost or stolen pets, relieve the burden on animal charities and local authorities and protect the welfare of dogs by promoting responsible dog ownership

O

wners of dogs found by the police or local authorities not to have a microchip will have the benefits explained to them and be given a short period to comply with the microchipping law. If they do not, they will face a fine of up to £500. Defra is working with database providers and microchip suppliers to ensure minimum standards of service for commercial databases and standards of microchips, and that there is updated implantation guidance and training available as well as a one-stop enquiry point for microchipped lost and found dogs. The idea behind the move is to make tracing ownership easier, tackle the growing problem of strays, promote responsible dog ownership, improve animal welfare and reduce the burden on the taxpayer and welfare charities. Figures from Defra state that each year more than 100,000 dogs are dumped or lost at a cost of £57 million to the taxpayer and welfare charities. 110,000 stray dogs are picked up by police, local authorities and animal welfare charities each year. Over half (52%) of these stray dogs could not be rehomed because their owner could not be identified. 6,000 dogs are put down each year because their owner is unknown and they cannot be rehomed.

Common Questions Will it hurt my dog? No, it does not hurt the dog. No anaesthetic is required and the procedure should cause no more discomfort than a standard vaccination. Does my dog still need to wear a collar? Your dog will still need to wear a collar and tag that states the name and address of the owner when in a public place. But from 6th April 2016 all dogs are required to be microchipped, the chip needs to be linked to the owners most current contact information to be compliant. 24 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

❱ BY HAYLEY HAMMOND

“Figures from Defra state that each year more than 100,000 dogs are dumped or lost at a cost of £57 million to the taxpayer and welfare charities.” Is there a fine/penalty if I don’t get my dog microchipped? All dogs aged 8 weeks and over must be microchipped by 6th April 2016. To be considered as microchipped, a microchip must have been implanted into your dog and your details recorded on an approved database. If your dog does not have a microchip, or if your current details are not recorded on an approved database, you may be served a notice giving you 21 days to comply. If you do not comply with the notice, you could face a fine of up to £500 on conviction. Alternatively an enforcer, such as a

dog warden, may seize your dog, microchip it and register the details and then recover the cost from you. Do I have to pay to update my details? Yes, you may have to pay a fee every time you amend your contact details to the database. Most databases offer a premium service which often works out cheaper over the course of your dogs life. Check with your provider for more details.

Gardening

Starting Your Vegetable Patch this Spring I love gardening. Every spring I start dreaming of all the veggies I’m going to plant. Have you ever thought about starting a home garden?

W

th food prices rising and more people trying to save money due to the economy, home gardening has taken off in a big way in recent years. Many vegetable seed companies report sales have shot up 30-50%, which is a clear indicator that more people are putting on their gardening gloves and getting to work. Home gardening is a hobby that can bring great joy to your life, enable you to get some free exercise, and bring the entire family together. Although it may not sound exciting on the surface, it’s something you should consider if you enjoy the outdoors

Step 1: Look at Your Sun Availability First, look at your garden. Where do you get the most sun? How much sun does each area get? One of my biggest mistakes when I started gardening was assuming that my garden needed 8 hours of sun every day. The truth is that many vegetables grow very well in part shade; that is, if they get at least 3 hours of sun, or consistent dappled sun throughout the day. What grows well in part shade? Here’s a list of 10 types of vegetables to get you started: • Salad Greens, such as leaf lettuce, endive, and cress. • Broccoli • Cauliflower • Peas • Brussels Sprouts • Radishes • Swiss Chard • Leafy Greens, such as spinach, and kale • Beans These 6 vegetables, on the other hand,

❱ BY HAYLEY HAMMOND grow best in full sun: • Tomatoes • Potatoes • Aubergine • Peppers • Squash • Sweetcorn You can also save money on your vegetables by purchasing them from independent nurseries or garden centres.

Step 2: Look at Your Space Now look at the land or space you have to work with. Remember, you don’t need a lot of space to grow a garden! If you’re working with limited space, then you’ll want to consider two options: container gardening, and vertical gardening.

Vertical Gardening If space is short then instead of planting a garden out (like a traditional garden in the ground, go up. For instance, you can attach rain gutters to the side of your house and plant shallow crops, like lettuce and herbs, in them. You can use canvas hanging shoe organizers off your patio for shallow crops. You can build outdoor shelving and have several layers of pots on your patio. You can use your garden fence to grow climbing veggies like peas and cucumbers. There are tons of creative (and frugal) ways to plant fruits and vegetables in your garden. If you do have some extra space to work with, you’ll be able to plant your veggies right in the ground. You’ll first need to rip up the grass (or whatever plants are currently growing there) and till the soil, making it nice and loose for the vegetables you’ll be planting. You’ll probably also want to put up some

kind of fencing to keep animals out. This doesn’t have to be expensive; even chicken wire will work.

Step 3: Consider Your Watering Needs How are you going to water your garden? Is the site you’ve selected easily accessed by your hose pipe? It’s important to analyse how you’re going to water your garden before you plant it. And, now is a good time to seriously consider investing in a water butt. I have two, and they are essential in the summer months for keeping my garden well watered rather than increasing my water bill.

Step 4: Plant Your Garden Once you’ve analysed your light, selected a site, and prepared the garden, you can now start planting! Make sure you give your plants a drink of water before you stick them in the garden; this wets the root ball and makes it less likely they’ll go into shock when you transplant them. Your garden will likely need water at least twice a week. Of course, this depends on how much rain you get, and what you’ve planted. Research the plants you’re growing so you’re informed on how much water they need. As a rule, it’s best to water either early in the morning or later in the evening; watering during the heat of afternoon sun can actually burn your plants. Asking children to help can be a very rewarding task for them as they will be very proud to serve their home grown potatoes to granny and grandad on their next visit! Not to mention teaching them responsibility to water and nurture your vegetables.

Container Gardening Don’t limit your search to traditional terra cotta pots! For instance, you can grow herbs and greens in chipped teapots and vintage olive oil cans (as long as you put sand or stones at the bottom for drainage). These containers can be picked up for pence at car boot sales, and have a lot more character than traditional terra cotta pots or plastic pots! SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

You see, there are lots of Qashqai clones on the market, but the Kadjar genuinely shares the popular Nissan’s platform and power units. What’s more, the car is cheaper to buy than the fashionable Qashqai and has that extra sprinkling of French flair. The front-wheel-drive 1.6 dCi 130 Signature Nav, on test here, is impressive. The turbo-charged oil-burner starts out fairly meekly, but then things under the bonnet hot up, resulting in plenty of mid-range pull. This is satisfying because it means you don’t need to work the gears hard to utilise the clout on tap. Push the Renault into twisty country lanes and the car stays bonded to the tarmac. There’s a little bit of body roll noticeable, but it never disturbs ride comfort. In fact, the Kadjar arouses confidence in this sort of driving environment due to its consistently wellweighted steering. The brakes are excellent, although their urgency takes you by surprise on occasion. However, a capacity for quickly scrubbing-off-speed is no bad thing. The gearshift-action is a little heavy, and some diesel-din sneaks into the interior when the whip is cracked, but this Renault is not the sort of car bought by out-andout driving enthusiasts. It is a vehicle that will spend the majority of its time in town, on the school run or on family outings. Unsurprisingly then, the Kadjar is comfy for a family-of-four and handles scarred, urban road surfaces well, due to its nicely-cushioned suspension set-up. The boot is better than the Qashqai’s, in terms of load space, and it has the same ingenious flooring that can be elevated, dropped, or used as a partition to

keep your possessions from tumbling about. Indeed, the Kadjar is a pleasant place to be, due, in no small part, to it having one of finest cabin’s in its class. From a tech point of view, the glass is just as full. The sat-nav system is a doddle and – in this flagship model – the car comes fully loaded with a top-quality Bose sound system, Bluetooth, faux leather upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof. Definitely more important than cabin toys is a car’s safety prowess. And the Kadjar has layer upon layer of kit to keep you protected. Equipment includes traffic sign recognition, lane-departure assist and even parking sensors at the front and the rear of the car. As mentioned, the Signature Nav is the top of the tree model, so unless you really need all the trimmings, you’ll enjoy the Kadjar just as much in its slightly lowerdown-the ladder ‘Dynamique’ guise. The car is still wellappointed and represents excellent value for money, whether bought outright on a PCP finance deal. To be honest, it’s hard to justify buying a Nissan Qashqai now that the Kadjar is on the scene. The car is just a good-looking, it’s great to drive, it has a bigger boot and its price-tag is lower. Unless you’re desperate to have the Qashqai moniker ornamenting your drive, save yourself some cash and go for the French marque instead. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |
