Local Band Set for Big Things Regional Final showcase of Live and Unsigned 2011 – all in a bid to be signed!
Careless Chemistry from Spalding has wowed the judging panel of the UK’s biggest original music competition and sailed through the audition stage of Live and Unsigned. Careless Chemistry will be competing against the most talented bands and artists in the country at the
They battled against hundreds of auditionees to secure a spot in the live shows and now have the opportunity to prove that they are the best in the region. Acts that made it through auditions will now take part in a live Regional Final Showcase in front of thousands of spectators and a professional judging panel, including judges from Kerrang, NME Radio and Radio One. The best auditionees from
their Regional Final Showcase also get the opportunity to play support slots with a selection of major headlining acts. They are a 5 piece Pop-punk band with hardcore influences. With front woman Danni Turner (15) lead guitarist Callum Martin-Moore (15) rhythm guitarist Tom Woodroffe (14) drummer Dylan Goodacre-Taylor (15) and bassist Steve Jackson (19). The band’s influences are mainly Four Year Strong, City Lights, Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! and A Day To Remember. They have been together with this lineup for only a short time, but the band
started 2 years ago. They write their own songs and are starting to cause a stir in the local music scene with help from Devoured Management. With an E.P coming out soon, things are definitely looking up for Careless Chemistry. Kelvin’s 450ft, Guys Abseil Local Electrician Kelvin Goulden abseiled the 450ft of Guy’s Hospital in aid of The Anthony Nolan Trust raising £1700.00. Bookmark wins 7th Award Bookmark in The Crescent has yet again been rewarded for their hard work and dedication to delivering a fantastic shopping experience here in Spalding they were recently awarded with the runners up prize of the prestigious Telegraph magazine shop award which celebrates independent retailers across the UK. Mary Portas, retail consultant and television presenter, celebrated the resilience of the High Street on Feb 10th, by highlighting the country’s fl ourishing independent shops at the Telegraph’s Best Small Shops in Britain Awards. The Telegraph Shop Awards, now in their fi fth year received an unprecedented number of readers’ votes after it decided to concentrate on the best, small, independent
shops this year. In total 18,000 votes were cast for many hundreds of diff erent shops across the country. The idea to shift the focus of the awards to small players was inspired by Ms Portas, a Telegraph columnist. She said: “Let’s give a shout to those unique retailers who really give our high streets their special identities and who’ve had to work so much harder than the big boys to stay afl oat these past 12 months.” Christine Hanson who is the both the brains and the face of Bookmark commented “We could not have got so far without the dedicated team of staff that I have and of course the customers who voted for us. Ayscoughfee Hall School’s Young Football Stars they won 2-0 against Thorpe Hall from Peterborough. They followed this with a 2-1 win on penalties against St Margarets, followed by a semi fi nal win against Kirkstone House which required a golden goal winner from Robert Taylor in extra time.

Coming to a Community Near You New classes in anything from art to fl ower arranging, from computers to new age kurling, could be coming to a centre near you. More than a dozen community rooms scattered through South Holland could soon be hosting morning and evening sessions in a wide range of activities under a new scheme due to be launched this spring. South Holland District Council is joining forces with Lincolnshire Active Community Network, which aims to provide extra activities for all age groups. The venues will be the 14 community rooms in the area’s sheltered housing schemes. They are already used for a range of activities by residents and other over 60s but usually in the afternoons. “It’s an exciting idea to make greater use of the rooms and to widen the scope so that other people will be able to take part in activities,” said Cllr Amanda Puttick, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Healthy Communities. “The residents’ usual activities will not be aff ected and, of course, they will be able to join in any new classes or courses that are provided. Its plans include activities like art classes, exercise, yoga and samba dancing. It would also allow outside groups to hire rooms for meetings or classes of their own. “There are some activities that will not be allowed, like celebration parties or discos.” Cllr Puttick said. “The community rooms are in residential areas and the needs of the residents will always be taken into account.”

In the January issue I highlighted the district council budget and in this issue I will be outlining the County Council budget. Lincolnshire County Council will be losing 23% of its’ grants from central government over the next four years, which along with other reductions in income mean that they will have to fi nd £125 million in savings over the next four years. Unlike the district council, the sheer scale of this means that there will inevitably be cuts to some services. The County Council have prioritised public safety, including safeguarding children, fi re and rescue and have allocated an additional £2.7million to deal with the unusual winter damage to the roads. We continue to provide funding for Police Community Support Offi cers and emergency planning for things like fl ooding. Importantly we will continue to support concessionary travel fares and will be continuing to invest in the popular Call Connect buses that are so important to rural communities like ours. There will be no cuts to libraries. We will continue to provide community grants for village halls and play areas and support citizen advice bureaus through this particularly diffi cult time. Economic regeneration and tourism will remain, although with much reduced budgets. The County Council will do its’ best to ensure that Lincolnshire Tourism’s website and desktop management system that allows tourists

To balance the books though, there will be increased charges for adult social care and post 16 transport and we will be using £13.7million from our reserves. There is an ongoing major restructure of the council with some 800 jobs at risk, including youth services and adult social care. We are allocating £1million to potential “Big Society” projects, which will include Community budgets, where for instance, service delivery partners can share buildings to save costs and combine roles to save on duplication of provision, particularly around older people, where there is an plethora of service providers all providing similar services, which can be very confusing for older people. In the capital programme there will be signifi cant investment in schools, social care, property and I.T. to ensure everyone in Lincolnshire has better and faster access to the internet. On a local level the County Council will be making a decision shortly on the George Farmer / St Guthlacs Academy which I hope will be approved later this year, bringing with it an investment of £8.2 million. I have arranged a meeting with John Hayes M.P. and the governors of the George Farmer and Holbeach Parish Council to ensure his support for the academy. Finally, district and parish elections and a referendum on the alternative vote will be held on Thursday May 5th. If you are not on the register to vote you have until 14th April to get in your application. If you want to stand for election you can contact South Holland District Council for a candidates pack and you will need to have your signed nomination forms in by noon on the 4th April.

REDUNDANCY RIGHTS A
t South Holland Citizens Advice Bureau we have seen a large increase in the number of clients enquiring about employment problems and, in particular, about their rights on redundancy, as more and more employers have had to make job cuts in order to survive the recession.
to follow special, additional procedures. If your employer doesn’t follow the proper procedures, the dismissal may be unfair and you could get compensation.
Your pension won’t be aff ected. You’ll still get your pension when you reach retirement age or when your employment contract says you will.
Time off to look for another job
You might need advice about any debts you might have and how to budget to avoid future debt. If you are buying something on credit, check whether you’ve got a payment protection insurance policy that will pay off the credit if you are made redundant.
What is redundancy?
Redundancy pay
Redundancy means that you are sacked because your job is no longer needed. This can happen if the business: • goes bust • closes down • moves to another area • has changed the way it does things. If you’re told that you are being made redundant, but think that none of the above circumstances apply, it may be that the dismissal is unfair. If you think this has happened, you could make a claim to an employment tribunal and you should get advice. You can get advice from your trade union, if you belong to one. There’s a strict time limit if you want to do this. This is usually three months minus one day from the date of your dismissal.
Deciding who to make redundant
When employers are choosing who to make redundant, they must make the decision in a fair way. They mustn’t discriminate against anyone. For example, they aren’t allowed to choose you for redundancy because of your age. However, they may be allowed to take into account how long you’ve been working for them. If you think you have been unfairly chosen for redundancy, get advice.
Off ering you another job
Your employers might off er you another job instead of making you redundant. This has got to be suitable for you and there are rules about what would be considered suitable. You could lose out on redundancy pay if you turn down a suitable job without a good reason; so get advice if you are thinking of doing this.
Notice of redundancy
When your employer makes you redundant, they must follow certain procedures. For example, they must give you notice of the redundancy. The minimum period of notice is: • one week if you have worked for your employer for one month but less than two years, or • two weeks if you have worked for your employer for two whole years; and • one additional week for each further whole year’s employment up to a maximum of twelve weeks’ notice in total. Your employment contract might say that you must be given more notice than this, but it can’t be less. If there are more than 20 people being made redundant, your employer has
Once you’ve been given notice of redundancy, you may have the right to have time off to look for another job. Some of this time could be paid. You must have worked for your employer for at least two years to get time off , unless your contract says something else.
Once you’ve been made redundant, you may have a right to redundancy pay. Your employment contract might say how much redundancy pay you’ll get. Otherwise, you’ll get a set amount of money (as long as you’ve worked for your employer for at least two years). This is called a statutory redundancy payment. How much you’ll get will depend on how long you’ve worked for your employer, your income and how old you are. There’s a limit on the amount of money you’ll get. This is currently £400 a week. If your employer doesn’t give you the proper notice, you may also have the right to pay to compensate for the fact that you weren’t given notice, in addition to redundancy pay. You should also get all the holiday pay due to you. If you have the right to a redundancy payment but your employer doesn’t give it to you, you should take out a grievance against them. You must do this in writing. If you still don’t get your money, you can make a claim to an employment tribunal. If your employer has gone bust, you could get a payment from the government. There are time limits within which you must take action, so don’t delay, and get advice if you need to.
Money matters
If you have been made redundant, and haven’t got another job to go to, you’ll need to think about your money situation. You might get cash help from the government or local authority (benefi ts), depending on your circumstances. For example, you might get Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), Housing Benefi t, Council Tax Benefi t, free school meals for your children and help with NHS costs. You should claim benefi ts as soon as you can. To claim JSA, call 0800 055 6688. A redundancy payment might aff ect your right to claim benefi ts.

During a period, chemicals in the body reduce the blood supply to the muscles of the womb in order to dislodge the lining. Spasmodic dysmenorrhoea is caused by there being insuffi cient oestrogen for maturing and stretching the muscles of the womb. During pregnancy there is an abundance of oestrogen for a full nine months and the muscle wall of the womb is stretched by the foetus. As a result, this type of period pain usually ends after pregnancy. Suff erers from congestive dysmenorrhoea experience a continuous, nagging pain in the lower abdomen and back which may start a week or more before the period, increase in severity on the fi rst day of menstruation and then gradually ease. This kind of period pain does not disappear with pregnancy and may actually get worse. Stress can also exacerbate it. It may recur until periods cease with the menopause. Research has shown that women who suff er from dysmenorrhoea have raised levels of certain hormone-like chemicals called prostaglandins that can trigger pain. Analgesics that reduce

homeopathy, though strong scientifi c evidence is scarce. Changing your diet to block the production of pain-provoking prostaglandins may improve matters. The week before your period, choose foods rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids and monosaturated fatty acids, calcium, magnesium and vitamins C and E. Minimize your consumption of refi ned carbohydrates, animal protein, fat, alcohol and caff eine-containing drinks. Herbs that rebalance hormones can also be helpful. A survey carried out in 2000 by the American Pharmaceutical Association revealed that dong quai was the most popular herb for treating period pain. It is a natural painkiller and increases circulation to the womb. Black cohosh and vitex agnus castus are often recommended for menstrual problems, though again the scientifi c evidence is inconclusive. If you are in the grip of cramps, try the herbs crampbark, black haw or skullcap. Take a deep bath to which you have added two drops of lavender oil and four of marjoram oil. Make a massage oil using two teaspoons of sweet almond oil plus three drops of an essential oil such as lavender, rose otto, or clary sage and rub gently over your abdomen. A hot pack or hot water bottle can also bring relief. Some women swear by a magnet, worn under your clothes in the area of the uterus - that claims to improve circulation and reduce spasm. Although you may not feel like moving around, there is some evidence that exercise can alleviate period pains by increasing circulation to the pelvic region. Any treatment that you fi nd relaxing is likely to bring some relief.

Garden Ready Getting the

According to the Met Offi ce, spring offi cially starts on the 1st March. Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m not totally convinced that spring is actually here yet, although it does feel as though winter is at last loosening its tight grip on the garden. Already the snowdrops are coming through - life is fi nally returning! In anticipation of the good weather to come, we’ve put together some ideas to help you get the garden ready for spring.
Tidying up
• After a wild, snowy winter, it’s time to give the garden a thorough clean up from one end to the other. High winds and frosts may have caused damage to plants, shrubs and even trees, so remove any broken branches, snapped stalks and dead
plants – as well as any stray debris that’s found its way into your garden. You can pile all the organic matter into your compost bin if you have one – you’ll have some great fertile soil to add to your fl ower beds later in the year, and nothing will go to waste! • If you don’t have a compost bin, think about getting one. They range from inexpensive plastic bins to more fancy wooden styles. There are even wormeries for those that want to get really close to nature! • After months of freezing temperatures, the fl ower beds and vegetable plots will need an overhaul. Take a fork to the soil and gently turn the earth over - but be careful not to pull up bulbs or damage roots to existing plants. By turning over the soil, you’ll be getting air to the roots and helping with the general breakdown of matter. You may like to start adding a good fertiliser to the soil too. • Take a look at any shrubs, trees, climbers or established
roses that you have - if they need pruning, now is the time to get shaping. • Unfortunately, you also need to start that never ending task that keeps you fi t - weeding! If you break the garden down into sections, you can make a start at beating back those unwelcome intruders. • Do a quick check of your fences and gates – have they survived the winter? Do they need a repair? • If you’re feeling full of energy, scrub down the glasshouse and get it in order ready for your seed sowing. • Check your gardening tools and take the lawn mower for a service.

• In readiness for new birds into your garden, clean out and repair the nesting boxes in your garden. Fix new nesting boxes in suitable places.

• March is classed as the start of a new year for lawns, and as such your lawn will be starting to

demand some of your attention. Firstly, clear the lawn of any rubbish and then rake away the moss and dead grass (you can put the dead grass and leaves on your compost heap, but a word of warning with moss though. There appears to be two schools of thought on this; some say it’s okay to add, and others advise against it. Check with your local garden centre specialists for professional advice. You will also need to dig out any weeds. Once the weather gets dry enough you will be able to edge the lawn and mow it - although the first ‘cut’ of the year should only take the top of the grass off, otherwise you can cause damage. You can also begin a regular process of adding lawn feed to ensure your lawn gets all the nutrients it needs to keep it looking healthy through the warm summer.
Bulbs
Look at the flowering bulbs in the garden. Do
any need moving or grouping together for next year’s showcase? Do you have any gaps? Make a note of where there are gaps and move bulbs when the foliage has died back (in the case of snowdrops through, you’ll need to move when they’re still in the ‘green’ – just as they finish flowering.). The same rule applies to your herbaceous plants - plants that need dividing in established borders can be lifted and replanted in a new location.
Houseplants
If you don’t have a garden, there is still work to do inside the house. Now that temperatures are increasing, your plants will start to grow more and will need more water. You’ll also

need to check on the quality of the compost and whether your plants need re-potting.

If that sounds like a lot to do, remember that the really keen gardeners will also be sowing seeds and planting - March is the start of a busy time for gardening. It doesn’t matter how much you do, as long as you enjoy yourself. With the sun shining (fingers crossed) and the fresh air around you, there is no better way to keep you fit.

Nutty Chocolate & Coffee Brownies Makes about 12 brownies.
Ingredients For the Brownies 50g dark Fairtrade chocolate, roughly broken up 110g butter 2 eggs, beaten 225g unrefi ned (golden) Fairtrade sugar 50g plain fl our 1 teaspoon baking powder pinch of salt 100g hazelnuts (chopped in half) For the frosting 100g butter, softened to room temperature 100g icing sugar 100g cream cheese 1 tablespoon strong black Fairtrade coff ee
Method Pre-heat oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4. Grease a tin measuring approximately 27cm x 18cm and line with baking parchment, allowing paper to rise 3cm obove the tin. Toast hazelnuts in oven for 10 minutes (maximum) until lightly browned. Melt chocolate and butter in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Sieve fl our, baking powder and salt into a bowl. Stir in sugar. Beat in eggs and chocolate mixture until well-mixed. Stir in hazelnuts. Pour mixture into the tin and bake for 30-40 minutes until centre springs back when lightly pressed. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely in tin. To make frosting, beat butter and icing sugar together until pale and fl uff y. Beat in cream cheese and coff ee. Spread frosting on cooled Brownies. Chill in fridge for 30 minutes, then cut into squares.

Party planning checklist for busy mums
Staying organised while you’re planning your child’s birthday party is easy with this sanity-saving checklist
One week before the party...
• Order cake from a bakery if you are not baking your own. Bake cake and freeze it, if making your own. • Make any other foods that can be made ahead of time and store foods in the freezer.
One to two days before the party...
Four weeks before the party...
• Choose a party theme with your child. • Draw up the guest list. Enlist several adults to help the party run smoothly. For three to fi ve year olds, ideally you’ll need around one adult for every four children, and for six to ten year olds, one adult for every six children. • Pick the party date and time. Parties are generally one and a half to two and a half hours long.
Three weeks before the party... • Make or buy the invitations and send them out. • Make or buy decorations, party bags and prizes.
Two weeks before the party...
• Write out a fi nal schedule of activities for the party. • Buy remaining food for the party. • Buy fi lm and have the camcorder at the ready. Check batteries for the cameras. • Finish decorating the cake, or pick up the cake from the bakery. Make sure you have plenty of candles and matches. • Decorate any indoor areas (save outdoor decorating for the day of the party). • Prepare food that can be made ahead of time.
The day of the party
• Prepare foods and drinks that could not be made ahead of time. • Set up any outdoor decorations and craft areas. • Plan a nap for your child and yourself, after the party! • Remember, young guests will be excited and there are bound to be mishaps. Keep your sense of humour, and even if every aspect of the party doesn’t go as planned, the most important part is to enjoy your child’s big day.
• Decide on activities and games to play. Consider the age of the children and plan games and activities accordingly. By Jeremy Eyeons, Member South Lincs R.S.P.B.Group With Spring hopefully not too far away now,perhaps this is an opportune time to give thought to a garden project this year.You can plant all kinds of trees,shrubs and fl owers that will attract birds and wildlife into your garden throughout the year. The blooms of Buddleia (the butterfl y bush) will attract bees,hoverfl ies,and butterfl ies such as peacock,tortoiseshell,red admiral and whites. A mature hawthorn hedge provides foods and shelter for many insects and garden birds. Blackbirds,starlings,thrushes and fi nches relish the autumn haws. There are many diff erent varieties of honeysuckle and its a makes a great addition to your wildlife garden,attracting bees,butterfl ies and moths which drink the nectar.Thrushes and warblers eat the soft red berries and robins and blue tits often nest in mature shrubs. Other useful plants include ivy,rowan trees,holly bushes and not forgetting daisies,dandylions and thistles which also provide nectar for insects and autumn seeds for birds! The South Lincs.Group Of The R.S.P.B. was founded in May 1987 and is run by a group of volunteers to promote the work of the RSPB and for the enjoyment of members and all nature lovers locally.Though based in Boston,our membership covers the whole of South Lincolnshire and to date we have contributed
approximately £60000 to RSPB conservation projects,with much of this spent locally in the county.The Group has over 300 members who receive a regular newsletter and are able to enjoy a wide range of organised events which are of interest to anyone from beginner to expert. Group have announced details of their 2011 birdwatching cruises,and the programme of 14 cruises starts on 13th april ending 22nd october.Each cruise is aboard “the boston belle”and lasts 4/5 hours.We board the boat (with refreshments and toilet facilities) at bostons sluice bridge,and travel down to the mouth of the haven and out into the wash.Our return journey then takes us along the welland before returning to boston.In 2010 we saw over 100 bird species with about 60 per cruise.Basking seals are also seen on most cruises. Make an entrance We welcome our family and friends into our homes By Sue Hessom of Tidy Interiors through the hallway. As it’s the fi rst internal part of our home that they see it’s important that it gives the right impression. Too many people neglect this space with the excuse - ‘its just a walkthrough’. It might be just a walkthrough, but a badly designed hallway can leave your home feeling unwelcome, no matter what design surprises you may have hidden behind closed doors.

allways come in various shapes and sizes and can be one of the hardest areas to decorate successfully, so give your design ideas some serious thought and do some research. Once you have an idea of the image you want to achieve, stand at your front door to visualise exactly how you are going to create your look.
Colours
Remember that there are no rules when it comes to decorating your home, so don’t be afraid to inject some of your personality into your hall area. Many people still choose white walls to help keep the space light and airy, but with high traffi c volume the walls can soon start to look shabby and dirty, so only opt for white walls if you are happy to maintain them. Instead, why not consider painting the hallway two colours - one dark, one light. Paint all the walls that are left facing; light, and all the right facing ones; dark - this will not only add visual interest but will help to create a feeling of warmth and open space. If you are adamant in having wallpaper in your hallway, why not try something diff erent? Find a wallpaper that refl ects you and put it on the stair wall only. Then add some framed pieces of the wallpaper to the opposite wall - not only will this will look fantastic but the overall eff ect will not be too heavy.
Flooring
Think about the volume of traffi c and how much cleaning will be required when considering which fl ooring to choose. If you are having carpet make sure you get a hardwearing, stain resistant one with good underlay. You don’t have to choose a dark carpet, just make sure you have the facility for people to wipe their feet properly before they enter. If you are opting for a wooden or tiled fl oor, a non-slip door mat is essential and remember, only use a runner if it is necessary and there are no tripping hazards.
Function
Next regard the function of the area - have you got room for furniture or storage items? Consider this carefully as the last thing you want is for people to struggle getting in or out of your home. Console tables can look nice in a hallway and are functional for displaying fresh fl owers and storing post and keys - just make sure your purchase the right size and don’t go too big. If you are struggling to fi nd one that meets your needs, why not consider making one yourself? Likewise, if you want coats and shoes to be stored search the internet for some clever storage solutions - there are plenty out there that are multi-functional and take up minimal space.
Lighting
If you have natural light coming into the hallway, try not to block it out. Think about

your window coverings and try to keep them to a minimum. However, if you like the idea of heavy curtains, design it so they can be pulled back during the day to let the light fl ood in. If you have no natural light, consider replacing full wooden internal doors with half glass ones - you will be surprised at the diff erence it makes. If you have a high ceiling then don‘t be afraid to showcase a stunning chandelier. If not, think about adding spot lights to the ceiling and stairs, or use a couple of strategically placed lamps to add an array of artifi cial light.
Finishing Touches
Accessories should always complement your décor. Mirrors are brilliant for refl ecting natural light and will help any area look wider. Display some unusual pieces of art to get people talking, or use black and white photographs in the same fi nished frames; or a themed display of pictures to generate an area of interest. Finally, think about the small fi nishing touches that will complete your look and help create that wow factor - replace boring white plastic light switches and plug sockets with trendy silver ones. And if you can’t aff ord to update your radiator, either paint it or consider purchasing a radiator cover.
