For me, October is approaching with some apprehension as I hit another milestone of 30. I’m not sure why we all get so hung up on age but we all seem to? I can safely say my 20’s have been full of fun, there have been some sad times but I have some wonderful memories with my fantastic friends and family. I am sincerely hoping it’s true what they say the thirties are the new twenties! There is much excitement in Spalding regarding the 10th Pumpkin Parade, is it really 10 years? The parade has evolved over the past decade and we all must be thankful to David Bowman who supports the event with such passion and dedication. Make sure you get yourselves into town on Friday 8th October as I am assured this year is one not to be missed. Here at Simply Spalding we are busy working on a new website for the local residents and would love your input, so please if you have any suggestions on what you would like including please email me at editor@ simply-spalding.co.uk or call 01775 767703. Until the next issue.....

Dishing Out Advice on Clean Cloths Food Safety Team advice and guidance improves a nationally-reported situation for local businesses The state of the nation’s dishcloths has hit the headlines recently with news from a Health Protection Agency survey on the germs that lurk in them. Local authority food teams carried out the sampling and the local Food Safety Team at

South Holland District Council took part in the survey. Nigel Payne, the council’s Community Services Manager says: “The team have previously run a seminar for butchers and have been rolling that advice out to businesses during routine inspections. We have been giving out colour coded disposable cloths as examples and we have been targeting this issue in

Changes to Small Business Rate Relief Effective from 1 October 2010

The Government has passed regulations resulting in a temporary increase in the amount of Small Business Rate relief available to eligible business ratepayers. What is the Government doing? It is increasing the support available to small businesses that pay business rates. It is doing this by increasing the level of Small Business Rate Relief available for a temporary period. From 1 October 2010 to 30 September 2011, eligible businesses with a rateable value of up to £6,000 will be entitled to 100% relief on their bill. If your rateable value is between £6,001 and £12,000, you will be entitled to relief on a sliding scale between 100% and 0%. Who is eligible? Anyone who is entitled to Small Business Rate Relief and has a rateable value of £12,000 or less will be eligible for the increased level of discount off their rates bill. When does this happen? The revised relief will apply between 1 October 2010 and 30 September 2011. Bills will be issued in October 2010 for the impact of changes in the 2010/11 financial year. Any changes to your liability that are necessary for 2011/12 will be set out in your 2011/12 bill when that is prepared in March 2011. Is it worth it? Yes! The Government’s changes will mean that those who, for example, are entitled to a 50% reduction in their rates bill will be entitled to a 100% reduction between 1 October 2010 and 30 September 2011.

light of the sampling results. Follow up sampling shows a significant improvement which shows the work we have done has raised standards. Our advice to businesses is to always ensure that dishcloths are regularly disinfected but better still to use colour coded disposable cloths instead.”

Fund Raising Evening for Help for Heroes Saturday 6th November 2010 at Long Sutton Conservative Club Tickets are £5.00 Evening starts from 7:30 pm with music from Alan Vibes Various fund raising and activities will take place during the day.

Increase to National Minimum Wage

EMB Ltd* is reminding local employers that the statutory national minimum wage for workers and/or apprentices is being increased as of 1st October 2010. From 1st October 2010, new national minimum wage (NMW) rates will come into force. The NMW applies to nearly all workers and sets an hourly rate below which employers must not allow pay to fall. For pay reference periods (PRPs) beginning on or after 1st October 2010, employers will have to pay all eligible workers the following: £5.93 an hour to workers aged 21 and above (‘the main rate’); £4.92 an hour to workers aged 18-20; £3.64 an hour to workers aged below 18 who are no longer of compulsory school age. It’s important to note that the age threshold for the main rate is going to fall from 22 (as it is currently) to 21.

New Entitlement to the NMW for Apprentices For PRPs beginning on or after 1st October 2010, employers will have to pay at least £2.50 an hour to apprentices who are: under the age of 19; aged 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship. Currently such apprentices are not entitled to the NMW. To qualify to receive the NMW, the apprentice must either: work under a contract of apprenticeship; or be employed on a government-funded training scheme that is treated as an apprenticeship for NMW purposes. These schemes include: Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships.

Employers will also be able to offset an amount of £4.61 per day from the NMW for each day that a worker is provided with living accommodation. To access free National minimum wage regulation information and advice, contact Business Link East Midlands on 0845 058 6644, email info@ businesslinkem.co.uk or visit www.businesslink. gov.uk/eastmidlands/nmw. * EMB Ltd is the organisation responsible for delivering the Business Link advisory service across the East Midlands.

but if your car is up to 2 years old, most insurers won’t give you a new one if it’s written-off.

We do. If your car is written-off or stolen, most insurers will only pay for a brand new car as long as it was under a year old. Advice

Could you be a victim of fraud?

S

cam, con, bamboozle, cheat are just some of the words we use to describe fraud. The slang nature of these terms can sometimes hide the seriousness of the crimes they represent. The effects of fraud can be devastating, robbing individuals and businesses of their money. It’s committed online, face-to-face, by telephone, by post, with new methods of fraud appearing all the time. Fraud is not a victimless crime. Fraudsters are often part of serious organised criminal gangs, who use the money to fund other crimes such as human trafficking and terrorism. UK consumers are deluged by millions of fraudulent offers by mail, email and telephone every year, encouraging them to invest in non-existent or over-valued shares and property, enter a fake foreign lottery, sweepstakes or pay to access fictional fortunes. Criminals defraud over three million people every year in this way, stealing over £3.5 billion. Protect Yourself Fraud happens when somebody lies to you or deceives you in order to cause you harm, usually by costing you money. Fraudsters are sophisticated criminals who use high-pressure sales techniques to convince victims to part with their cash. Do not give any person information to organisations or people before verifying their credentials. No bank or card issuer will contact you by email and ask for your personal or financial details; Remember, not everyone is who they claim to be. When online, ensure the person you’re communicating with is who they say they are; If an offer seems too good to be true – question it! Don’t take a good sounding business offer for granted, check out the authenticity of the organisations. You can do this through regulatory bodies. Don’t feel pressured to accept an offer or make a purchase. The National Fraud Authority was set up in 2008, as an executive agency of the Attorney General’s Office, to

harness, focus and co-ordinate the existing counter-fraud work (www. attorneygeneral.gov.uk/nfa) It also aims to improve the support given to victims of fraud, and has set up a contact centre where victims can report cases of fraud and obtain information, advice and support. This contact centre is called Action Fraud – anyone who suspects that they are a victim of fraud can contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 of via www.actionfraud.org.uk Fraudsters rely on our silence, but we can beat fraud if we talk, so always report it. Fraud costs our economy £30 billion every year. There is no shame in becoming a victim and it is crucial that this crime is reported so that the criminals can be caught – as fraudsters rely on their victims’ silence, knowing that many will be too embarrassed or ashamed to report it. Every fraud, no matter how small, is important to Action Fraud. Your information feeds into the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau, helping to build a profile of those committing fraud, stopping fraudsters in their tracks. However, it is very rare for money to be recovered for victims. If you’re involved in or witness a crime in action, call 999. If debit or credit cards, online banking or cheques are involved in the fraud, your first step should be to contact your bank or credit card company. Diane Clay, Manager of South Holland CAB, says that they regularly come across victims of fraud at the bureau, some of whom have lost huge amounts of money. She would encourage victims to report fraud to Action Fraud or to Consumer Direct/Trading Standards (08454 04 05 06). The CAB can also support victims with help on issues arising from loss of money due to a fraud, including debt and benefit advice, but she stressed that very few victims ever succeed in getting their money back.

Citizens Advice Bureau give free, confidential, impartial and independent advice to help you solve your problems.

South Holland CAB is open at 24 The Crescent, Spalding PE11 1AF Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays 10am – 4pm; Thursdays and Fridays 10am – 1pm; and the last Saturday of every month: 9.30am – 12.30pm ; Drop in for a short assessment interview during opening hours, prior to being offered an appointment. I think I will have to be VAT registered soon but I am nervous this will add 17½% on to my prices and with a further increase looming this could be 20% and I am not sure my customers would be happy with this. Are there any other options for me? I run a hair and beauty business.

Peter replies...... The addition of VAT to any business can be a huge financial factor especially in a business such as that of hair and beauty where all your customers are the general public who are not registered for VAT. There is one alternative method available to you which may be of interest and that is registering the business for Flat Rate Scheme VAT. I have several clients who successfully operate VAT in this way. When you register for Flat Rate VAT you only pay over a flat percentage of VAT based on the turnover of the business and do not claim any VAT back on input VAT. The Government introduced this Scheme to help small businesses with the burden of calculating VAT rather than as a tax saving method. However, in my experience, several businesses have been able to save VAT through registering for this Scheme. As a hair and beauty salon your flat rate percentage from 4 January 2011 will be 13% and you will be able to work out from this whether it would be worth you being on the scheme. There are one or two other ways in which you may be able to either avoid registration or minimise the downside of any registration and I would be more than happy to discuss the position further with you. Free, no obligation appointments are always available with Bulley Davey

Health

I suffer from dry, hard cracked heels, how can I treat them?

Helen Replies..... Resident Podiatrist at Aspire, Susan Lester , replies calluses (hard skin) form around the edges of the heel. In severe cases, heel calluses can become so dry and hard, they crack (fissures), which can bleed and become infected. They result from the combined effects of dry skin and constant irritation caused by an ill-fitting shoe. The occasional trimming or filing will provide relief for only a few weeks. The following treatment suggestions may help: Daily for one or two weeks, immediately after a shower or bath, dry your feet and while they are still warm and soft, gently file the callus using a pumice stone or foot file. DO NOT use a metal foot file or one that looks like an egg, as these will actually irritate the skin and make the condition worse. After filing apply a good quality foot cream containing 25% urea morning and evening. Continue this treatment to prevent re-occurrence, filing 3 – 4 times a week. If the condition is more severe or the treatment is not working, you will need to seek professional help from your nearest HPC registered chiropodist / podiatrist.

I am hoping to take my new wife and her daughter away early next year and wonder if you have any suggestions as I don’t have any children and really have no idea?!

Rachel replies..... Are you interested in sharing your knowledge and expertise with Spalding residents ? Why not join our panel? Call 01775 767703 for details

You don’t say how old your step daughter is, but many hotels have a variety of different facilities including crèches for baby’s right up to clubs for teenagers and everything in between. We would need to chat to you to evaluate your specific needs i.e. does she like water sports, or is she more creative, would she like to mix with other children her age and join in with the kids club? I am presuming you would like some winter sun for the purpose of this answer, but skiing is also well suited to children of all ages with tuition available for differing ages and abilities. If you are just looking for a short break in the UK you could consider Center Parcs which offers a host of facilities at all of their sites. There are so many options for family orientated holidays; I would suggest that you speak with one of our travel advisors to help you find the right one for you and your new family.

Electrical I am going to be renting my house out soon as I am going travelling for 6 months but it all seems such a complicated process in terms of checks. What electrical checks and certificates do I have to have?

Autumn Collections Now Available Sizes 10 - 26

Kelvin replies.... This is a question we are often asked, so thought it was worthwhile recapping and adding to previous answers. This is a very involved area and my answer is limited to a single property not classed as a house of Multiple Occupancy The Rented property electrical installation is required to be Safe when a tenancy begins Maintained in a safe condition throughout the tenancy This is the landlords responsibility To achieve the above a Full Periodic Inspection and Report (PIR) not just a visual of the electrical installation is required by a fully qualified Electrician competent to carry out this work. It is the landlord or their agent’s responsibility to ensure that they are suitable ie check the checker is he trained or actually registered, K A Goulden Electrical are. Any remedial works required by the PIR/report must be carried out, a satisfactory report issued. A full copy kept which contains dates for future inspections determined by the actual condition and test results of the installation, usually between one/five years Another new tenant means the system has to be safe so another inspection will be required although not necessarily as in-depth as the full inspection. Portable appliances left on the premises also require regular testing so leave as few as possible. Remember your property must be safe for the tenant when they move in so it requires testing properly, a full electrical inspection (not just a visual or only a part or percentage) the electrical system has to have enough lights and sockets so that the tenant does not have adaptors and trailing leads that can be fallen over. You need a test and report to say the system is satisfactory from a suitably qualified and registered electrician or company You are only renting for 6 months, if you are leaving washing machines, fridges, and other appliances they also need to be tested include fixed items such as cookers and water heaters etc. Try not to leave small items such as kettles, toasters, microwaves etc All electrical systems require testing on a regular basis whether you rent out the house or just live in it your welfare is just as important. Fire detectors also need to be installed and working it is a known fact that people do not die from fires in houses with a working fire detection system.

Health & Beauty Don’t Feel Lost, Spot The The signs of Stress

Accepting that we are stressed is not easy. Some people view an acceptance of being stressed as a sign of weakness and an inability to cope, and won’t readily admit to it. However, if you’re stressed it’s very important that you address the situation as soon as possible. To do this you need to be able to recognise the symptoms of stress.

The adrenalin rush when the body goes into a state of high alert may take some time to pass but repeated triggering of this response, in other words if you are constantly in stressful situations, can lead to the body being in a state of constant alert and stress. This can result in a variety of symptoms, which can be physical, emotional or mental.

What are the physical, mental and emotional signs of stress? We are all able to recognise when our body has had a rush of adrenalin during a situation where we’ve had to face alarming or challenging events. For example, think about when you’ve had a near miss when driving the car or the feeling you get when you think you’ve lost your wallet or purse. That’s the adrenalin you can feel.

Physical symptoms of stress Tenseness, Panic attacks, Tiredness, Stiff neck, Shoulder and back ache, Lack of/ or increased appetite, Lightheadedness, Rapid breathing, Palpitations, High blood pressure, Tingling in the arms and legs, Insomnia, Indigestion/upset stomach, Sweating/sweaty palms, Muscle tension, Headaches, Susceptibility to infection, Rashes and Dizziness

Doing the best in the worst of times Molsom & Associates, Optometrists and Contact Lens Practitioners, who have practiced in Spalding for over 13 years, have moved to a larger, more modern practice at 5 Hall Place (formerly Birthdays) just across the road from their old practice. The extra space has meant that Andy Molsom, owner, as well as expanding the eye testing facilities, the practice’s dry eye clinic and investing in their ‘state-of-the-art’ 3D retinal scanner, which is one of the first in the County has also provided the means to take on an extra member of staff. The dedication of Andy and his team to provide the best possible eyecare for their patients, whether that be a routine eye examination or the most complicated contact lens fitting – must be testament to the success of Molsom & Associates, in these, the worst of times.

There is an open invitation to all the residents of Spalding to join Andy and his staff at Molsom & Associates on Saturday 23rd October 2010 to celebrate the opening of the new practice .

shop smart, shop local Shopping local saves you money Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us all that sole traders = expensive, but the evidence just isn’t there to back this up . If you add in travel, parking costs, fees to transport larger items home and your time, the overall cost is often much higher. Shopping locally retains our community People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns and villages but don’t equate this to how they spend their money. Shops will only survive if customers spend locally – so if you want a vibrant town centre, where people can socialise as well as shop, shop locally. Shopping local retains our distinctiveness Many town centres in Britain look the same with franchises and multinationals. Our independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Independent shops keep traditional local products alive. Remember remember your pets this November! Don’t let fireworks leave your pet all of a quiver Did you know 60% of pets become stressed and fearful while fireworks are going off? Yet 77% of owners have never taken action to address their pet’s noise phobia because the fireworks’ season is only an annual occurrence. Moreover, 95% of well meaning pet owners may actually fuel firework fears without even realising it. Making an effort to ignore fireworks and behave normally will give your pet reassurance. If they are anxious, petting them whilst fireworks are going off, in an attempt to calm them, will only heighten their fears! Some or all of the following can indicate fear in your pet: • Trembling and shaking • Clinging to owners • Barking excessively • Trying to run away • Soiling the house • Cowering/hiding behind furniture • Pacing and panting • Refusing to eat Planning ahead can help to ensure the firework experience is as stress-free as possible for your pet.

Diffuse the situation Create a safe haven for your pet so they have somewhere to hide during fireworks. To help create this comforting area, use a plug in diffuser. These dispense calming chemicals into the

room, which provide comfort and reassurance to your pet. With specific pheromones included, they are clinically proven to help prevent/reduce stress related behaviour problems. Pheromones are natural signaling agents which have an effect on an animal’s behaviour. Pheromones stimulate emotional centres in the brain, and in so doing can produce a change in behaviour. Diffusers typically last about 4 weeks and should be plugged in a minimum of 48 hours before the event. For additional support during the event, an accompanying pheromone spray can be used on your pet’s bedding. Rooke’s recommend: DAP Diffuser & Spray for Dogs or Feliway Diffuser & Spray for Cats. Alternatively, calming collars can be used. Over a period of 30 days, these collars release pheromone on your pet’s skin/fur. When your pet breathes in, the pheromone is registered by a sensory organ at the back of the hard palate and a signal is sent to an emotional centre in the brain. The result is a calming sensation for your pet.

Microchipping/ID tags Whatever you do, make sure your pet’s ID tag is up to date or they are microchipped. Many cats and dogs run away from home in a panic when there are fireworks around and tend to get lost. If your pet does go running off, it is much easier to be able to identify its ownership if it has been tagged or chipped.

When things go with a bang... Focus on the sights and sounds Whether you have a dog or a small animal anything you can do to reduce the noise and view of fireworks the better.

Cover any aviaries or hutches with thick blankets or a duvet to block out the sight of the fireworks and deaden the sound of the bangs, but make sure there is enough ventilation. Draw the curtains in your house and give your pet extra bedding to burrow/crawl/jump into so it feels safe. Put your pet in a safe, comfortable, closed room, even if it is caged. It will keep it from running about the house and injuring itself, wrecking furniture or being scared. Make sure the room has a cosy place for your pet to sit, such as a blanket in a corner, and it is warm. If your pet is a horse or other farm animal, make sure it has clean bedding and is inside the stable or barn. You might also try drowning out the noise with stereo music or the TV, sounds that are more familiar for your pet; just make sure not to play these noises ridiculously loud or you may scare them even more!

Lead by example The best advice for any pet owner is to ignore any fearful behaviour. It may seem cruel, but do not try to comfort your pet; they’ll pick up on your anxiety and this may make the problem worse. Fussing a pet that appears frightened can reward and encourage this behaviour. More importantly, do not try to pick them up or restrain them. If your pet wants to hide, let them.

Provide a welcome distraction Distractions are useful and can help to take your pet’s mind off of what’s going on outside. We’ve already mentioned a friend, but there are a few other things you can provide too. Water and food - Many pets will be very frantic and uneasy. If they have water it will help calm them, and food at its regular portion will make the pet feel like it is a normal day. Soothing sounds - If your pet is used to music, turn some on at normal volume. Also, the sound of rainwater is very soothing to pets. Toys and games – Distract your pet with a favorite game they enjoy playing; maybe a favorite ball or toy. Or introduce a new toy or chew toy to divert attention and keep them occupied. However, whatever you do, if they don’t want to play, don’t force them!

Happy Bonfire Night!

If you have a dog that is scared by noises and know a dog that is not and which gets on well with your own, invite them over. Keeping the two together during the event may help your dog to realise that there’s no need to be afraid. And even if that doesn’t work, it’s at least a small distraction for them!

Delicious Pumpkin Soup With Smoked Bacon

Nick Richer of Geo Adams & Sons in The Crescent, Spalding brings you his delicious pumpkin soup- recipe I know this recipe does not use much meat but I thought it would be great to make before you go to the Spalding Pumpkin Festival and have to warm you up when you arrive home!

Serves 4

Ingredients:

1 Medium Sized Pumpkin ( De seeded peeled and chopped) 3 Medium Onions Chopped 1 Cup of Water 2 Cups Dry Apple Cider 1/2 lb-225g Smoked Back Bacon 1/4 Cup Brown Sugar 4 Chicken Stock Cubes 1 Apple (Peeled, de-seeded and chopped) 2 Tablespoons Chopped Parsley 1/3 Cup Crystallized Ginger Chopped 2 Teaspoons White Pepper Salt to Taste

Method: Saute the onions and the bacon in a large saucepan until soft. Remove some of the Onions and bacon to use as a garnish and leave the rest in the pot. Add the rest of the ingredients except the parsley, cover the pan and simmer for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Let the soup cool for 20 minutes then put in a blender in batches and blend until smooth. Return the soup to the saucepan and heat it through. Serve in bowls adding some of the bacon, onion and parsley as garnish. Before I make this soup I always make sure I have Lincolsnhire Poacher butter in my fridge and a crusty French stick from Pacey’s

Enjoy!

Introducing a New Partner to Your Family According to statistics, one in three people in the UK today is likely to be involved in a step-family at some point in their life. While all family relationships can be complex at times there are specific challenges involved in introducing a new partner to your children and it’s a life-changing event for all concerned. New beginnings - are you really ready? Before you do anything it’s worth taking stock of your situation and remembering a few points before you embark on a new family life. Be as sure as you reasonably can that this new relationship is likely to be a long term one before you think of getting the children to think of him/her as a partner. In addition it’s vitally important to be sure of your new partner’s intentions too - are they really ready to take on active role in your childrens’ lives? Did you Know? 10% of families in the UK are step families - that’s around 880,000 families in total. In 2001 there were 0.7 million stepfamilies with dependent children living in households in the UK - 0.4 million were married couple stepfamilies and 0.3 million were cohabiting couple stepfamilies. There is a tendency for children to stay with their mother following the break-up of a partnership. Over 80 per cent of stepfamilies consisted of a natural mother and a stepfather. It’s important to be realistic about the challenges involved in introducing a new partner to your family too and you must be prepared to give things time. There is sure to be a settling in period where everybody gets to know each other and tries to work out how to get along. Indeed your children may never like your new partner as much as you do and it’s unlikely that the new partner will ever love your children in the way that you do either and you have to realistic in your expectations. This may sound harsh, but it’s easy to get swept along by our own personal emotions in situations such as these but you must take into consideration the possible feelings of your children and new partner too. Introducing a new partner to your children can raise all sorts of fears and anxieties in your children, depending on the exact circumstances of your separation with your previous partner.

Family Life

Help your new partner to know a little about your children before he/she meets them. Each child is unique and you know them better than anyone else. For example, your new partner may think your child is being rude when actually they’re just very shy. So prepare your new partner a little in advance so they know what your child’s character is like. Try to avoid kissing/cuddling your new partner for the first few meetings. Nothing is more likely to exclude your children and make them feel more uncomfortable. It might also prompt them to feel guilty that they’re somehow involved in betraying their other parent (your ex). Expect the unexpected the first time your children meet your new partner and plan for it. Let your new partner know that if there are any signs of the children being upset that it’s them that you’ll comfort (rather than giving your attention to your new partner). Helping your children adapt to the change Children are often more tolerant and more adaptable than we think. When they feel safe and loved they can cope with pretty much anything. But it’s important to tread slowly and carefully as you help your children to adjust to a new family set-up. Above all remember the importance of communicating with your kids. Remember that communication involves listening too. You can’t always give children what they want but you can value their opinions by listening. Communicate to children in a way that’s appropriate to their age and development so they can really understand what’s happening in the adult world around them. Try to put yourself into their position. We often forget our child’s perspective and the things that worry them might not be obvious to us. For example “Does this mean that we won’t see Dad any more?” Children are capable of interpreting your needs and wants too. Sharing a little of your own emotions with them helps them to see you as a human being and put the new partner into context. But make sure that what you share is age and development stage appropriate and don’t use this to pressure your children into acceptance. Try to be sure to keep some time aside when it is just you and the children. That can really help your kids to feel that the new partner isn’t there to steal you.

Strategies for making it work Timing is crucial. Take it slowly and sensitively at first. Talk to your children about your new partner and see how things progress, you may find your children become curious and ask if they can meet him/her. First meetings tend to work best when they’re relaxed and social and perhaps in a neutral place such as the park. This will usually be less stressful than a formal introduction in your home and will feel more natural when the meeting is kept quite short. It’s probably quite a bad idea to let their first meeting to be in the bathroom on a Saturday morning after he/she has stayed over at your place for the first time! Consider a ‘gently does it’ approach....a few short visits initially followed by a few longer ones as they get to know each other.

Family Life Get your Wellies on, Rain Coats and Umbrellas out and have fun!!

The summer has past us by and now the colder weather is here our natural instinct is to stay indoors more and to try to keep warm and dry. I love the outdoors and if you have been reading my column over the last few months about outdoor play you will

understand when I say “whatever the weather let’s play outside”. I have been sharing with you ideas for Water Play, Building/ Construction and Den Making. Just because it’s started to get a bit wetter and colder should not let it discourage us from letting our children play outside just as much as in the warmer weather, we just need to put a few more layers of clothing on instead! When children play out of doors they are exercising their growing intellectual and emotional muscles, as well as their physical ones. Let’s not discourage our children from the opportunity to play with greater intensity, energy and imagination just because of a bit of rain! Getting a bit wet will just make it all the more fun. Children are less susceptible to the weather conditions than adults and when wrapped up there is no harm in playing in the cold, they will soon tell you when they have had enough!

measure how much rain we have had. We can make Wind Chimes and little Wind Mills that will decorate the garden and blow with the wind making different noises. We can help to plant bulbs and talk about how they will grow next year in the spring or maybe change the flowers in the pots and hanging baskets to winter ones. The children at my nursery have been experiencing all these things and more whatever the weather we still go outdoors. Having regular exercise and fresh air will actually help to keep all children healthier and not be the cause of a snuffle or cold. I look forward to telling you next month about the new collections of resources and play ideas that I will be receiving at the end of this month. I know that they will be relating to Role Play, Digging/ Gardening and Playing Games outside. Very exciting! Please don’t forget to look out next month for our Construction Competition Winner.

If you are interested in Little Treasures Nurseries looking after your children, please call 01775 714 224 where you can arrange a visit and taster session, all free of charge before making your final decision.

Home & Property

Choosing the Right Builder

You’ll not only endure weeks of builder’s bum and builder’s tea - a builder can make your project a dream or a nightmare. A bad builder in your home can be an extremely stressful experience, but for every rotten apple there are many hard-working and responsible companies. The trick is knowing how to select them. Establish their credibility A good building company will be affiliated to a renowned trade organisation like the Federation of Master Builders. Don’t just take their word for it, ask for membership details and check with the member organisation. Don’t be tempted by a deal for cash. Cowboys who cut corners on tax will cut corners on your job. References, references, references The best references come from friends and family. If someone whose judgement you value has had a positive experience, trust them. Otherwise, ask your builder for several references from recent customers. The paperwork Two things are crucial here. Check immediately that they are happy to sign a contract. If not, alarm bells should ring. Secondly, ask for a fully detailed quotation, itemising every aspect of the job. A good builder will be happy to spend the

extra time at the start of the job detailing the specification. Pay peanuts, get monkeys It is obviously always very tempting to go for the cheapest quote but this can often be short-sighted. Many unscrupulous builders will typically quote at least 15-20 per cent below what the job is actually worth, knowing that they can bump the price up with extras throughout the project. Timings When embarking on a building project, it is imperative to plan ahead. A good builder will never be able to start immediately. They are in high demand and you will often have to wait for a couple of months. If your builder can start tomorrow you have to ask yourself why. Finally, Trust your instincts Above all, trust your instincts. You are going to have a very personal relationship with your builder during the course of your project and it is imperative you have a good working relationship. Does he have your best interests at heart? Is he happy to take the time to listen to your concerns and talk through your design ideas?

By using the free energy of the sun

A

s we all hear energy bills are increasing we all need to look at other solutions for heating our home, supplying hot water and producing electricty. John Cave explains about solutions to cut the cost of heating hot water in the form of solar panels. Ideally solar panels are fitted to a south facing roof to ensure highest exposure to the sun, however, they can be fitted to an east / west facing roof provided there is minimal shading. An average family spend 30% 0f their heating bills heating their domestic water. The solar water heating system should heat nearly all of your domestic water supply in the summer and 40%-50% in the winter. Most households currently heating their water with oil or gas should see a complete payback of the initial cost within 6 to 8 years. In conservation areas planning permission may be required, please consult your local authority for rules and regulations in your locality, if you live in a listed building you will not be allowed to attach solar panels to it. Modern technologies using evacuated tubes allow solar panels to make the best use of the British climate, even in cloudy/broken sunshine. Normally the existing hot water cylinder is replaced with a larger capacity tank. The system is complete with user friendly controls, displaying panel temperature and the cylinder temperature. John has over 30 years experience in the plumbing industry and can be contacted for more information on 01406 423033.

Spalding Gymnastic Academy

is First Again!

With continued to heavy investment in specialist equipment during the year and the facility now is something of a speciality not only in Spalding, Lincolnshire but in the UK. Visit www.spaldinggymnasticsacademy.co.uk to see for yourself.

H

ere in Spalding our children are lucky to have such fantastic facilities at Spalding Gymnastic Academy and recently they have opened their podium pit, and if that means nothing to you, it is a 60 cubic meter pit filled with specialist landing foam. This enables the gymnasts to perform challenging moves on the high bars and vault with no fear on landing. It is unique in the County and is a sure sign of the long term commitment of the Academy to provide the very best gymnastic facilities in the area.

Do you have a birthday soon? Want something different? Well why not hire out the Academy to enjoy with your friends. The qualified coaches will be available to ensure you have fun and stay safe. They will even award special medals and organise party games as required. Please contact Andy or Alec on 01775 713599 or alternatively e-mail at info@spaldinggymnasticsacademy.co.uk to discuss your specific need and to check availability.

Join in the fun, get fit and make new friends in a safe comfortable environment at Spalding Gymnastics Academy.

The year has been a bit of a whirlwind for Spalding Gymnastic Academy.

When I spoke to Mattew Van Lier he explained the past 12 months have been filled with different activities, ranging from training, competitions to Birthday parties! Despite the global economic situation the Academy has continued to grow and there are now over 300 gymnasts regularly attending. This includes boys and girls from the age of 4 to 18 years. The Academy based at Cradge Bank is looking to recruit more children, particularly for the recreation classes, so why not go along for a free taster session on Sunday 17th October to view the facility and see what is on offer for your child. There are three sessions on the day; boys sessions (all ages) between 10-11am, girls (age 4-7) between 11- 12 am and girls (age 8+) between 12-1pm. Alec and Carol Harding who established the Academy over 30 years ago are assisted by a very experienced team of qualified coaches who will ensure that your child has the opportunity to develop to their full potential. All of the team are fully CRB checked so you can be assured that your child is in a safe and caring environment. Parents are welcome to watch their children from the raised viewing gallery whilst enjoying a drink or snack from the on-site kitchen; it really is a fun place to be!

The New Vauxhall Insignia VXR By Tim Barnes-Clay

barnesclay.media@gmail.com

Packing 325 horsepower, a sophisticated four-wheel-drive chassis and a sub-six second 0-60 time, Vauxhall’s new Insignia VXR is a true monster of a motor. Based on the successful 2009 European Car of the Year, and available in hatch, saloon and Sports Tourer body styles, the high-performance Insignia is Vauxhall’s first VXR model to adopt 4X4 technology, using a specially made chassis developed using the punishing Nürburgring circuit in Germany. Highlights are a ‘HiPerStrut’ front suspension system, Adaptive 4X4 with electronic Limited Slip Differential and a 10 millimetre reduction in ride height over the Insignia SRi. The HiPerStrut system is unique to the VXR and serves two primary functions: firstly, to reduce torque-steer, but also to maintain negative camber during cornering, thereby improving ultimate grip levels in wet or dry conditions. Complementing these features are standard 19-inch alloy wheels, but my test car came with ridiculously flash 20-inch lightweight forged alloys, which are a cost option. The VXR also comes with bespoke tyres, revised damper settings on both axles, and Brembo brakes with colour-keyed callipers and vented/cross-drilled discs. It seriously does look the business! ‘The Insignia VXR hatchback is not just about absolute power though. It serves equally well as a family motor, with a massive boot for all the kids’ stuff and an equally big rear seat to accommodate three passengers. In essence, it’s an ultra-fast performance saloon that

will appeal to buyers who appreciate subtle yet distinctive styling, but who need to know that there’s real substance below the car’s metal. And the VXR has plenty of substance. At the heart of the Insignia VXR is Vauxhall’s advanced 2.8-litre V6 Turbo ECOTEC engine. Producing 325PS, the engine propels the car from 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds, achieving an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. It’s awesome! With a design inspired by the Vauxhall/Opel GTC concept car, many of the Insignia VXR’s styling cues will be familiar to those who saw this groundbreaking concept at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. A deeper bumper, incorporating bold, twin mesh grilles either side of the main grille, dominates the front of the car, and at the rear, a spoiler, as well as huge dual chrome exhausts make sure everybody knows this isn’t a ‘normal’ family hatch. This sporting theme continues in the Insignia VXR’s cabin. Wonderfully sporty, yet comfortable Recaro front seats are joined by a VXR branded steering wheel, gearknob and instrument graphics. VXR sill plates and a black headlining complete the look. My Insignia VXR hatch came in Power Red and it suited the car’s character down to the ground. My only

Pros ‘N’ Cons criticisms about the car are that it’s thirsty and the built in sat-nav is not user-friendly. In fact it was easier to read a map. Apart from those two blips, this car is an awesome set of wheels, and one you’d have fun in all day, along with the family – if you can afford to run it.

tTest the antifreeze strength. A 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water offers enough protection. Levels should be checked and replenished as necessary. tTest the battery and charging system to ensure they will also function properly in subzero temperatures. tTest your ignition system using an electronic diagnostic check it’s an effective way to determine overall engine performancwe. A leaking exhaust system can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide entering the car. Closed windows during cold winter months can also increase this risk. tKeep the fuel tank at least half full at all times. Cold weather causes condensation in the system, which can lead to fuel-line freeze-up and no-start. tUse the right oil. Most car manufacturers recommend a certain oil and using this improves cold-weather starting and fuel economy. The same rule applies to diesels. tMake sure your tyres are up to speed. Winter tyres outperform all-season tyres in temperatures below 5 C. On cars with front-wheel drive, make sure to put winter tyres on all four wheels—putting all-seasons on the rear wheels makes the car prone to skidding. Check all tyres, including the spare, on a monthly basis for proper inflation. tRemove excess snow from the car before driving off. Any snow left on the roof might slide and obstruct your vision. tPerform your own routine checks throughout the winter. Make sure all lights are working, keep the headlights clean and change the wiper blades if they streak. Finally, use washer fluid that’s effective for temperatures below freezing. tAlways carry an emergency kit. Ensure it contains a blanket, extra clothes, water and sweets or a chocolate bar for energy.

Budgeting for Christmas W

Entertainment

ith our busy lives and the commercial pressures that seem to dictate our whole world we are already seeing selection boxes and crackers on the shelves. I don’t know about you but I find it all a little overwhelming. With one friend in particular starting her shopping from September I thought this year I would do my homework and maybe this year if I follow a plan I won’t find it so stressful! So for me THE ANNUAL Christmas countdown has already begun. Summer clothes and gardening equipment will soon be replaced by advent calendars (in preparation for Dec 1st) and bumper chocolate tins. I am sure a Santa’s grotto will soon be hitting a High Street near you. The festive season will be upon us in just 10 weeks time and even those organised souls who spend the rest of their year happily juggling the demands of work, friends and family can often come a cropper. It’s all over in 24 hours, yet we seem to start planning next Christmas from the moment that last piece of wilting mistletoe goes in the bin. The stress of planning means most people put it off until the last minute, me included. Statistics show that more than 40 per cent of people only starting to plan for Christmas a month before, according to research by the Post Office. But a bit of organisation now can reduce the inevitable festive pressures, hooray! It seems many people splash out all their funds for December 25 and spend the rest of the year paying the price. Four million Britons don’t plan for Christmas spending at all and a third go over budget, the Post Office found. For some reason people tend to look at Christmas as a shock emergency expenditure. It isn’t, it arrives on the same day every year, with the average cost being around £600 – that’s a fortune if paid purely from December’s pay packet. Ideally you need to allocate it over the year and budget £50 a month. By budgeting you can avoid the Christmas debt trap, if this year you haven’t pre-planned then make sure you spend what you have and certainly don’t borrow. Only spend what you can afford, it’s not worth getting in debt for Christmas. Next year think about opening a separate bank account and each month set up a standing order to put in the amount needed, you could include

birthday present money in there too, as we often spent a lot on these through the year as well. I love nothing more than indulging in the odd spending spree but the thought of Christmas shopping, queues, crowds and that lengthy list of presents for long-lost relatives can leave me trembling in their winter boots. I have looked into avoiding this and there are key themes of advice; Make a list and stick to it When you are shopping, focus on one ‘group’ at a time. Get into children/ man/auntie mode so that you’re in the right frame of mind. Save up a day’s holiday at work or book a morning off in advance, and try to make it a day when the shops are less busy, such as a Monday morning and the earlier in the year the better. Ask the advice of the sales staff, they deal with hundreds of customers every week doing exactly what you are doing and so they may just know of that ideal present for Uncle Bob who is always a pain! If you are ordering presents by mail order, make certain the goods will arrive by Christmas – 28 days is the longest you will usually be expected to wait. Mail order can spread the cost, but beware! Although you don’t have to pay interest, prices are often higher than the high street, especially the independents we are so lucky to have on our high street and don’t forget postage and packaging on top. If you really want to avoid the crowds but support our town then and shop over the phone. Many companies will deliver by post to the recipient.

TOP TIP:

Keep all your Christmas receipts in an envelope, so that you can find them easily, there’s always someone that needs to return a gift.

Although a cow has no upper front teeth, it grazes up to 8 hours a day, taking in about 45 kg (100 lb) of feed and the equivalent of a bath full of water. A healthy cow gives about 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime. A cow has four stomachs: the rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum. The rumen is the largest stomach and acts as a fermentation chamber. The abomasum is last of the four and is comparable in both structure and function to the human stomach. The highest bridge in the world can be found in the Ladakh valley between the Dras and Suru rivers in the Himalayan mountains. The valley lies at an altitude of about 5 602 m (18,379 ft) above sea level on the India side of Kashmir. Called the Baily Bridge, it is only 30 metres (98 ft) long, and was built by the Indian Army in August 1982.

In Norse mythology the 13th number led to the death of Baldur, the beloved of the gods. When the 12 gods gathered for a banquet in Valhalla, Loki gatecrashed the party, increasing the number to 13, which led to the death of Baldur. It also happens that in Tarot cards, 13 is called “Death.”
