Welcome to the November issue So winter is here! We have had the fire on most evenings and there is definitely a chill in the air, but then, I do love a sharp frost and dazzling sunshine. It does seem impossible that we are just a few weeks away from Christmas though. Over the last month I have celebrated my (cough) thirty-sixth birthday, and how things change, three years ago I went shopping to London with friends and ended up spending most of the day, due to rain of course, in a bar. Roll on 3 years and as a family we headed down to London Zoo - both great in their own way and days I wouldn’t change for the world. Less about me and more about this issue, which is a jam-packed one! We are focussing on the ever important decision 16 year olds are facing regarding their further education, we look at the importance of ensuring you have a legal will written as well as with the winter weather looming how to stay safe on the road. Once again Martin Lewis offers his invaluable advice and this month he is talking about mortgages and how to ensure you get the best deal. As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is to have a great month.

Stark Warning for Fly-Tippers

Business award up for grabs Calling successful business people in the district - the chance to win a prestigious accolade for your hard work is up for grabs. This year’s South Holland Business Awards, organised by Spalding and District Chamber of Commerce, takes place at Springfield’s Exhibition Centre on November 24 and once again South Holland District Council is sponsoring the Business Person of the Year Award. We are currently seeking nominations for this prestigious award and would like to invite the business community to help us find that special person. Nominees must be from South Holland based companies. However, entrepreneurs from businesses which have sites outside the district, but are based or headquartered here can also be nominated. The award is targeting someone who in your opinion has excelled or led in one or more of the following areas: • • • • •

A fly-tipper who dumped a sofa and a chair by the side of a road has been handed a heavy fine. Adrian Fox, of Spalding, dumped the items in Welland High Bank near Crowland on June 27. However, a letter had been left inside the sofa which resulted in officers from South Holland District Council tracing the items back to him. Fox appeared at Boston Magistrates’ Court this week and pleaded guilty to fly-tipping. He was ordered to pay a total of £1,000.29, which included a fine and cleanup costs, as well as legal and investigation costs. Roger Gambba-Jones, South Holland

Home-Start Lincolnshire Takes Off With Official Launch Event Home-Start Lincolnshire held an official launch event at The Lincoln Hotel recently to celebrate the merger of 8 local Home-Starts within the county and share the fantastic work which continues to be carried out by our dedicated team of volunteers and staff, as well as future plans and projects. The event was packed out with government officials and local dignitaries, education, health professionals and many agencies and supporters from all over the county and beyond eager to hear the valuable support that Home-Start Lincolnshire are continuing to provide throughout the county for vulnerable families. Reaching the child by

the supporting the parent early can provide the social and emotional foundation our local vulnerable children need. Delegates heard inspirational stories from volunteers and Family Support Co-ordinators about how Home-Start volunteers have made a positive impact to families in our local community. Chief Executive, Tracey Ruddock, explained how the charity is looking at innovative ways to ensure we meet the needs of the local community, “Home-Start throughout Lincolnshire has an excellent track record in improving people’s lives. Twin sisters from Gosberton, near Spalding, Nicola and Louise O’Connor give a heart-rending account of why they volunteer for LIVES and are so passionate about helping their neighbours. Their story is told in a film is released on 5th October as part of LIVES Everyday Heroes week, which is celebrating the 700+ volunteers who give up their time to save lives across the county. A video will be released every day that tells a story about these extraordinary volunteers. 23 year olds Louise, a beauty therapist, and Nicola, a pharmacy technician with Lincolnshire Co-op, faced every person’s nightmare when they returned home from shopping to find their father unresponsive.

“All emotions go through your head. At the time I actually just screamed my head off because I didn’t really know what had gone on and it was completely unexpected” says Nicola “I got on the phone to 999, Mum just hugged him, Louise came round. We realised actually he was still warm, there’s something we might be able to do. We’re responders, we know what to do. We did CPR. “ Louise adds “I think if we didn’t have the LIVES training we wouldn’t have done what we did because we wouldn’t have had the confidence. We’re so grateful that LIVES has given us that confidence to be able to give Dad that chance.” Sadly, despite getting the

best possible attention, their father didn’t make it. Since that time both sisters have since thrown themselves into LIVES, responding to their neighbours in Gosberton and beyond. “We just want to save someone else. If we can save somebody else’s relative then that’s what we want to do.” Nikki Silver, CEO of LIVES says: “Louise and Nicola are absolute heroes. Not only have they been brave enough to share their story but they are so committed to helping people in their community. They are just two of our 700+ volunteers all across Lincolnshire helping more than 20,000 people a year. We’re incredibly proud and want to celebrate them through Everyday Heroes week” Lincolnshire Co-op’s Head of Pharmacy Alastair Farquhar said: “Nicola’s is incredibly committed to her role with LIVES and she brings that strong caring attitude to her work in the pharmacy.” Lincolnshire Co-op also raised over £48,000 for LIVES last year through its Community Champions scheme and Nicola will be spending a day in local schools soon during LIVES Restart a Heart Day on 18 October as part of the Co-op’s staff volunteering programme. LCVS joins new project to help people back into work Job seekers in greater Lincolnshire can now access tailored support to help them get back into work thanks to a new project. Greater Lincolnshire MOVE ‘Moving On: Volunteering and Employability’ is a £2.1 million threeyear Big Lottery Fund and European Social Fund (ESF) funded Building Better Opportunities project aiming to help people into paid work. Jennie Eaton, Greater Lincolnshire MOVE project coordinator, said: “MOVE is not just about sending people on courses and then leaving them to it. “Jobseekers will have ongoing support from an advisor who will be there every step of the way to help them identify what they would like to do, how to do it and how to overcome hurdles that are standing in their way. “Whether a jobseeker needs support to build their confidence, skills, overcome a health challenge – whatever their own personal obstruction to employment – MOVE advisors have the time, patience and skill to find the help that individual needs to achieve their goal.” A network of 24 organisations are working together to make help available in the whole of the county – not just in the city and bigger towns. Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) is helping to deliver the project in a coastal strip of Lincolnshire covering parts of East Lindsey (including Mablethorpe, Trusthorpe and Sutton on Sea, Skegness, Ingoldmells, Chapel St Leonards and Wainfleet), Boston (coastal marsh villages such as Fishtoft, Frampton and Fosdyke) and South Holland (including Holbeach, Long Sutton, Sutton Bridge and Whaplode). MOVE is completely free and independent of Job Centre Plus participation is not mandatory, and

Nick Worth, The Deputy Leader of South Holland District Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages

Nick’s Notes

thought it would be useful to get an insight into my diary which goes to show that as a councillor every day is different, with different challenges and a vast array of subjects, which is why I enjoy the constant challenges set. I started off the last month discussing future options for our back office services at South Holland, where we currently share services with East Lindsey District Council. These services include Human Resources (HR), IT, Finance, Customer Services, Revenues and Benefits. With the introduction of Universal Credit, which will be run directly from central government, so soon to be no longer in our hands and opportunities to be ever more efficient through our shared management with Breckland in Norfolk, we have to look to the future to see what will provide the best and most cost effective service for you, our residents. A series of meetings on Lincolnshire County Council run Heritage services, on the back of serious cuts in government funding to local authorities, has made us look how we can run these services differently in the future, by retaining the income from sites such as Lincoln Castle and reinvesting that back into the sites themselves, so that in three years there will be no cost to the taxpayer. I met with a number of other elected members from across the country who regularly go into other councils, as Peer members, to see how they are working, gain new ideas that we can discuss in our own authorities and also help those councils to improve their services with recommendations based on best practice around the country. All local authorities are continually striving to improve and learning from others is a great way to do this. At a very local level I attended our Community Gym meeting in Holbeach St Marks where we have over 300 members. Our new website still needs some work to achieve our aim to do the whole application process online and a move away from handling cash. Equipment wise we continue to reinvest our income into new equipment on a regular basis and our next big project is to renew the air conditioning, which will be a major expense. I attended a meeting of the Local Government Association’s Safer and Stronger Board, as a representative of South Holland District

Council, which looked at Licensing,Community Cohesion, Domestic Abuse and Regulatory Services (I am currently the LGA’s regulatory services champion, where I regularly meeting with National Trading Standards and other such bodies), and on this occasion our main discussion was around Brexit and our priorities for the which bits of EU legislation to bring into U.K. Law. Some 55 pages of A3 EU Legislation so far uncovered is going to be a considerable challenge! Next was a regular briefing at LCC on Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages and the Coroners Services where we are looking to move from the current two Coroners to one, alongside Area Coroners and to make it easier for people to attend inquests by using more local venues. There then followed two full council meetings, one at South Holland and one at Lincolnshire County Council to discuss policies, budgets and directly answer questions from other members on my executive responsibilities. At South Holland this includes Commercialisation (Economic Development) and at LCC includes libraries and Heritage, registration and Coroners and Fire and Rescue, so a wide range of services. A meeting of the village hall committee in Holbeach St Marks is welcome relief where we discussed the weighty issues of the recent dog show and impending Halloween activities and a proposal for a Jazz Band to play at the hall in December. Meetings to discuss the move of Holbeach Library to the Co-op, the new Sport England Strategy and its impact on health and obesity and a visit by the American Ambassador to Lincoln Castle finished off a busy schedule, along with a visit to Alford Fire Station to see them on one of their training nights, which gives a real insight into the wonderful work they do to keep us all safe. The good news is that there are relatively few fires in Lincolnshire and this is helped by the number of smoke alarms now fitted in homes across the county. Having just discussed with Highways the urgent need for a right turn ‘box’ in Park Road, Holbeach, which will now be implanted, I am off to my local church and village hall for the annual and well attended Harvest Festival. I may even have some time for a glass or two of wine!

Advice

Stop & Search

General powers of the police Many rules about police behaviour are set down in codes of practice, and there are also laws about some of the things the police can and can’t do. The police are also covered by the law about discrimination, which means it’s against the law for them to discriminate against you because of: ❖ age ❖ disability ❖ gender reassignment ❖ pregnancy and maternity ❖ race ❖ religion or belief ❖ sex ❖ sexual orientation

Stop and search The police can stop and search any person, vehicle, and anything in or on the vehicle for certain items. However, before they stop and search they must have reasonable grounds for suspecting that they will find: ❖ stolen goods, or ❖ drugs, or ❖ an offensive weapon, or ❖ any article made or adapted for use in certain offences, for example a burglary or theft, or ❖ knives, or ❖ items which could damage or destroy property, for example spray paint cans.

If the police act in a way which does not comply with the law or the codes of practice, it may mean you could sue them, that they could be prosecuted for committing a criminal offence, or that they could be disciplined. This information does not cover every situation and, if you have problems with the police, you should always take further advice. If you are cautioned or taken to the police station you should always contact a solicitor.

If a serious violent incident has taken place, the police can stop and search you without having reasonable grounds for suspecting they will find the items. The police can also search a football coach going to or from a football match if they have reasonable grounds for suspecting there is alcohol on board or that someone is drunk on the coach. The police can also stop and search you or your vehicle if they have reasonable grounds to suspect you are a terrorist. But they do not need reasonable grounds if they have been given permission to carry out searches in a particular area. But the police do not have the right to stop and search you just because of your race or religious background. When the police stop and search you, they must provide you with the following information before the search can begin: ❖ proof of their warrant card

Stop and account The police can stop anyone in a public place and ask you to account for yourself. For example, you could be asked to account for your actions, behaviour, presence in an area or possession of anything. When the police stop you and ask you for an explanation, you don’t need to provide your personal details. The police do not have to make a record or give you a receipt. But you may be asked to give your ethnicity.

The police can also stop and search you or your vehicle if the y have reasonable grounds to suspect you are a terrorist. But the y do not need reasonable grounds if the y have been given permission to carry out searches in a particular area.

❖ information on police powers to stop and search ❖ information on your rights ❖ the police officer’s name and police station ❖ the reason for the search ❖ what they think they might find when they search you. If you are not given a copy of the search record, you can ask for a copy. You must do this within three months of the date of the search. In all of these situations where the police have a right to stop and search, they should not require you to take off in public any clothing other than an outer coat, jacket or gloves. A more thorough search or a strip search may take place in private, for example in a police van. A strip search must be made by a police officer of the same sex. If you are arrested, the police can search you for anything you might use to help you escape or for evidence relating to the offence that has led to your arrest. In some circumstances a police officer of the rank of inspector or above can give the police permission to make stops and searches in an area for a certain amount of time - as long as this is for no more than 24 hours. When this permission is in force the police can search for offensive weapons or dangerous instruments whether or not they have grounds for suspecting that people are carrying these items. An officer with the rank of assistant chief constable or above can also give permission for searches in an area in order to prevent acts of terrorism.

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

Children have returned to school after their summer break and are already well in to the new academic year. Having sat the two 11 + papers, Year 6 celebrated with a visit to 1498 Spice Affair restaurant in Spalding where they combined a lesson on their geography topic of ‘India’ with a session making their own naan bread and a delicious lunch. They have also visited the Parish Church in Spalding as part of their R.E topic of ‘religious buildings’. Reception meanwhile armed with a bag of 50p pieces, spent a fun and instructive morning at the market buying fruit and vegetables, which, on their return to school, were turned into a variety of ‘Super hero’ vegetable models which, in turn, were used as a focus for drawing and writing. The Tag Rugby and netball teams have played their first matches of the season and have regular practices after school. New clubs have joined the ‘extra curricular’ list, including Eco Club and crochet. Music lessons with the wonderful peripatetic staff have resumed,

Top Design Technology Pupils At Wisbech Grammar School Celebrate Success During September Wisbech Grammar School celebrated the high quality coursework completed by pupils as part of their GCSE, AS-level and A-level Design Technology (DT) examinations. The evening was attended by over 50 parents, pupils and invited guests, who all enjoyed an interesting and informative insight into the

many diverse projects that the pupils had created. Designers of the year went to James Horsburgh (Wisbech), GCSE, William Davis (Wisbech), AS-level, Charles Pindar (Downham Market), A-level and most improved pupil went to Ethan Jutsum (Heacham). with several children choosing the cello. We look forward to the additional instrumentalists in the school band.

Packed Open Morning Draws In The Crowds Wisbech Grammar School was delighted to welcome a packed hall of prospective parents and pupils to its September 2016 Open Morning. Parents and pupils heard from the Headmaster, Mr Chris Staley, in the School’s wonderful £2.5m refectory, Skelton Hall. Chris talked about the exciting developments in the School, including the new Scholarship Programme designed to make it possible for talented children to achieve their full potential at Wisbech Grammar School. There are two types of Scholarship on offer: Academic and All-Rounder (for children who excel in Art, Music, Drama or Sport), for entry in Years 7, 9 and 12. Visitors were taken on pupil-guided tours of the 34 acre site to view the fantastic facilities and meet pupils and staff. They learnt about the School’s specialist teaching and small class sizes, first class sports facilities and the wide range of extracurricular activities on offer. Welcoming prospective families to the School’s September Open Morning, the School’s Headmaster said “This morning has been a wonderful opportunity for parents and prospective pupils to learn more about Wisbech Grammar School. Academic excellence is at the heart of our educational approach. In tandem, we offer an all-round educational journey which enables our pupils to go beyond the narrow confines of exam specifications, delivering a bespoke educational experience. He also described how the Preparatory and Senior School

Head of DT, Mr Rob Frost, said, “On behalf of the DT Department and the Headmaster we would like to thank once again all who attended for their many positive comments and for giving up their time to support all the pupils who have worked very hard this year to create innovative and well-crafted products.”

This area has excellent colleges offering of a range of academic and vocational courses, including agriculture, plumbing, electrical installation, office skills, beauty therapy, catering and tourism. If you are thinking of going to college make sure you look on their website to find out when their open days are so you can look around, meet the staff, and see the facilities to help you decide. Amanda Mosek, Boston College principal offered the following advice for students in Year 11 and thinking about their future; “Leaving school can be a very daunting process for young adults, if you feel that you’re ready to leave school and are considering college, it is important to think about what you want for your future. Explore both academic and vocational skills based training. Ask yourself a few questions, would you like to go onto university? Would you prefer to gain a university level course locally? Are you happier learning by practical application rather than in a classroom? Hopefully this will help guide you as to which course would be most suitable for you. “As the Top Performing College in

Family Life Lincolnshire for the last two years, here are Boston College we offer impartial advice and guidance to not only our prospective and current learners but also to anyone who needs advice on making their next step in education. It is important whatever route you take after school, that it is the right one for you.”

Apprenticeships & Training Apprenticeships are a fantastic way of getting work-based training. You’ll do real jobs for real employers, training on the job and earning while you learn. Some work-based learning providers who offer apprenticeships also offer Study Learning Programmes for young people aged 16 to 19. These include vocational courses such as catering, construction, hairdressing, pre-apprenticeships and, for those not yet certain which vocational area they want to follow, personal and social development.

Volunteering Whilst you will still need to take part in some part time education or training volunteering is a great way to get valuable work experience, helps you become more employable and boosts the impact of your CV. Make sure you include it on any applications you make. You could apply for internships, work experience or contribute to your local area by being a community based volunteer.

Is a Reward Chart Actually rewarding?

W

hen I bring up the topic of reward charts with my mum friends I get an array of passionate responses. Some parents rely heavily on them. Some parents come down hard on their use. So, what are their pros and cons? Do reward charts help to make a lasting change in behavior? Or is their impact only temporary? Do the gold stars encourage children to seek out external praise instead of feeling satisfied about a job well done? Or do those stickers serve as a useful boost to self-confidence? Reward charts can be an effective way to motivate children to complete tasks provided the charts are used in the appropriate manner. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind when considering using them: If completing a task is based on incentives or rewards alone, essentially the parent is relying on what I call a “soft limit,” that is, compliance is optional, not required. Some kids do not value rewards or incentives to the point that they are willing to consistently perform tasks. In these situations, the training value

of the lesson is lost. Let me give an example. Let’s say a parent offers a special treat or money for setting the table on a daily basis and notices that this hasn’t been done for several days. When the parent confronts the child and explains that they won’t receive the reward, the child responds, “That’s OK, I have all the money I need,” or “I don’t want any extra TV time today.” Then what? If completing the task is expected or required, then reliance on rewards alone

will backfire with some kids. In these situations, adults are better advised to use a combination of incentives (e.g., rewards) for compliance and consequences for noncompliance. For example, if the parent expects a child to complete a chore on a daily basis (e.g. making their bed in the morning), the parent might offer a daily sticker or monetary reward for compliance (e.g. 20p a day or special privilege for 5 stickers a week)and a consequence (e.g. loss of 20p a day for noncompliance). The combination of incentives and consequences increases the training value and motivational value of the lesson. In effect, the child is rewarded for his or her compliance and penalised for noncompliance. The child learns the value of the lesson through cooperative choices or uncooperative choices. This approach doubles the training value.

allery Tile has just completed two years in business and I am pleased to say that the word is spreading. I concentrate on customer service so that in 5 years or 20 years my customers are still happy with their choice. I have many suppliers and only deal with good quality products and service from them too. I have some lower price ranges and some high end ranges but generally concentrate on good quality, good price throughout. I love putting together kitchen cabinets and worktops with wall and floor tiles as this is usually a great challenge. A bathroom’s only starting component is usually a white suite so here there is a blank canvas but, you have to take into consideration size and light. Larger tiles generally make a room look bigger and gloss tiles reflect light. Tiling fashion in bathrooms can be anything from a full feature wall or a feature vertical strip to the same wall tile, as floor tile giving a very clean sharp look.

What about adhesive?

What is quality in a tile?

Gallery Home started to evolve in March as I had extra space and wanted something interesting to add to the business. There are lots of small gifts and housewares ideal for home décor. There is a theme of shabby chic, vintage about the stock but you

Well firstly a tile fitter will tell you that consistency of size matters as this is an issue that can really show when they are being installed. Many people are now aware that porcelain is a much harder wearing tile than ceramic, but a good quality ceramic laid correctly will last a long time too. Quality will also show in the screen print or colour finish and texture on a tile.

22 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

There are many on the market and different tiles and substrates need different adhesives. You need to ensure when purchasing your tiles that the correct adhesive is used and I can give you all the advice you will need on this matter. All porcelain tiles should be installed using flexible powder adhesive. Paste adhesive is generally for ceramic wall tiles.

Casual Dinning

istorically, the ancient Greeks covered their bread with locally sourced oils, herbs and cheese. Modern pizza evolved from similar flatbread dishes in Naples in the 18th or early 19th century. Prior to that time, flatbread was often topped with ingredients such as garlic, salt, lard, cheese, and basil. Pizza has come a long way since then and although we offer a variety of Italian toppings we specialise, like the ancient Greeks, in using locally sourced produce. Casual Dining Enjoy our no frills, inexpensive, quality, dining experience, the single course place to eat. Feeling especially hungry? PadmaYogaStudio

Spalding’s only dedicated yoga studio

I

n the centre of Spalding, Padma Yoga has become an oasis of calm in the lives of many local residents. Offering yoga classes for all abilities, the studio has a welcoming atmosphere and is based in a beautiful light and airy space above the bowls pavilion at Spalding Constitutional Club. Developed in India, yoga has evolved over several thousand years as a way of bringing harmony to body and mind. In the West, it was popularised in the 1960’s and 1970’s by the likes of The Beatles who practised with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and is often known for the challenging physical positions used in the media! In reality, it is a whole range of practices that help us maintain physical health and improve mental wellbeing. If you’ve never tried yoga, it’s good to know that there are few limits to who can get involved. In the last few weeks Padma Yoga has had students ranging in age from 3 weeks to 89 years!! Of the ladies and gents that join us, Studio Director Claire Thomas tells us “many people come to yoga with health complaints, some mild, such as a bad back or general stiffness, whilst others have chronic health conditions, mental health problems and in some cases terminal illness.” The lovely thing about yoga is that most people can be accommodated within a suitable class. Padma Yoga also runs classes for new and expectant mums. Studio Director,

Claire trained with Birthlight, the leading provider of yoga teacher training in this field. The studio offers Pregnancy Yoga for expectant mums from 14 weeks, Postnatal Yoga for Mum & Baby from 1-2 weeks after birth and monthly Postnatal Yoga for Mums sessions for a bit of mama pamper time! All practices are taught in a way that’s safe for new and expectant mums, taking account of how a woman’s body changes during pregnancy and after birth. They’re also a great way to meet and connect with other mums, often getting much needed support and advice along the way. Claire has recently been joined by Keira Williamson. A new mother herself, Keira is a trained Hypnobirthing teacher. Keira runs evening and full day workshops at the

studio, teaching mum and dad the techniques of Mindful Mamma Hypnobirthing. Keira tells us “the techniques taught by Birthlight and Mindful Mamma really compliment one another, giving mums the best support during their own personal journey to motherhood.” Claire says she felt it was really important to be able to offer a range of classes in Spalding. Many people travel out of the area to find what they’re looking for. With this in mind, she has expanded the classes offered at the studio to try and fill the missing gaps, making it easier for people to try yoga and experience the benefits for themselves. As interest in yoga continues to grow in Spalding, Claire hopes that more teachers will join her and the team at the studio. We currently have four teachers offering Hatha, Iyengar and Satyananda Yoga, along with Pregnancy & Postnatal Yoga, and Hypnobirthing classes. If you would like to try yoga, then take a look at the Padma Yoga website. There are details of the classes that run each week, information about the teachers and lots, lots more. Padma Yoga offer a reduced price taster class for new students, and alongside regular weekly classes, the studio also runs short courses. Yoga Basics for complete beginners. Yoga for Stress, Anxiety & Depression and a range of weekend workshops. There’s even a weekend retreat next Spring.

Glam UP this Christmas

I

t’s Christmastime! Not only is this a time of year to celebrate the birth of Christ, but it’s also a time to look and feel fabulous! So, the right makeup is a must! Here’s the lowdown on fashion for the festive season

Eyes: Quite simply the darker the eye, the better. During the Winter months, eye shadow colours usually darken. Metallic eyes are also in this season and more defined eyebrows. Huge, bold brows have become very trendy over the past few years. Still not sure what to do with your lids? Adding sparkle and a shimmer to your eyes will always go with any seasonal look.

Lips: Every girl needs a great colour when locking lips under the mistletoe! Stained lips with a little pop of colour is really popular. Clean, fresh, looking lips is in. Besides a natural colour, brighter colours are popular. Try playing around with brighter, vibrant colours, which have been popular since the summer. And of course, red is always a sexy, fabulous colour to wear for Christmas.

Cheeks: A lot of makeup artists are choosing a light cheek colour this season as well. They’re either doing a light colour, or no cheek colour at all. A fresh, clean, youthful, matte, look is popular this season.” People can play with their look during the

Fakin’ it

Hair extensions are super easy to clip in and clip out, look very natural, with no real damage to the hair. It’s all about personal preference though, and also about how much you’d like to spend on your hair, but this for sure will work.

Winter months. It’s the one time of year when you can get away with it! So get dark, sparkly and most of all have some fun!

To dye or not to dye? Colouring your hair instantly makes hair look thicker (particularly darker colours). Some explain that it’s because the hair dye goes into the hair shaft and “swells” it, making it bigger and therefore looking thicker. Also, well placed high-lights and low-lights can give the illusion of dimension. Also, the darker your hair colour, the more thicker it looks – strange but true!

GET MORE HAIR VOLUME

Let’s face it: We all want to know how to get more volume in hair. The “volume” hair myth. The very first thing everyone tells you to get more volume in hair is “get layers cut.” Don’t believe them! I So what should you do instead? You should keep the ends of your cut very blunt and ask your hairdresser to cut straight across, which will give the illusion of thicker hair. Avoid this hairstyle Another thing to remember if you want

more volume in your hair: avoid super long, straight haircuts. Keep your hair length around your collarbone or only slightly longer. The weight of the long hair can pull your hair down, making your crown area look even more flat. Products to use. There is a bit of mixed thoughts about volumising products. Some say that they don’t work, but as a sufferer of flat hair I like to give everything a try!

Try dry shampoo. It’s especially good for volume at the crown area. Just spritz a bit of dry shampoo onto the roots of you hair and ruffle it up with your fingers. Don’t panic if you have dark hair as many brands now offer coloured versions too! Backcombing – a must do. Backcombing your hair at the crown and smoothing some hair over it will lift hair and not make it so flat. Beware though – backcombing is very damaging, but if you want some extra height at your roots, this works very well. All you have to do is take a fine-toothed comb and tease the hair roots. After backcombing the crown area of your hair, spritz on some hairspray to keep the hold. Styling tools. Blow dryers, hair curlers and tongs will also give hair much needed volume. To use a blowdryer to get more hair volume, all you have to do is after shampoo (with a volumising shampoo, of course!) flip your hair over your head and focus on blow-drying the roots. This will give major lift to the roots area, giving your much more hair volume.

Keep warm and well A

s the weather turns it’s important for us all to stay warm and healthy. Check on older neighbours or relatives to make sure they’re safe and well. Make sure they’re warm enough, especially at night, and have stocks of food and medicines so they don’t need to go out during very cold weather. Report someone at risk from cold housing.

Keep your house warm

Wear several layers of clothes. Several layers are better than one thick layer, as warmth from your body is trapped between layers. Always wear hats, gloves and scarves. If possible, stay inside during a cold period if you have heart or breathing problems Keep active. Move around at least once every hour and avoid sitting down for long periods of time. The Highways Agency offers useful advice on travelling in snow and freezing conditions. Keep warm and well Home heating systems • Fed up with high energy prices? Our guide explores the options for heating your home • Find out which heating systems could help you cut your energy bills and reduce carbon emissions • From gas and electric central heating, to solar power and biomass: pros and cons, and the annual costs Home heating systems Options for heating your home Getting a modern boiler could shave hundreds off your heating bill, but can cost thousands to install With high oil, gas and electricity prices always fluctuation, it’s important that we heat our homes in the most efficient way. Using less energy is the best way to cut your bills (see our guide to using less electricity for tips), but this doesn’t mean having to live in a cold, dark home.

Central heating If your house is connected to the national gas grid, you could get a gas-fired central heating system, and this is usually the cheapest option. Our gas boiler reviews reveal which models come from Which? recommended reliable boiler brands - and which we think you should avoid. Also take a look at our guide to using your boiler heating controls to save you energy and money. However, millions of households in the UK are not connected to the gas grid and rely on other forms of fuel to heat their homes: electricity, liquid petroleum gas (LPG), heating oil and/or renewable technologies. See the related pages in this guide for more information on each heating option.

Renewable energy There are a number of ways you can generate your own energy at home from low or zero carbon ‘microgeneration’ technology, such as wood burning stoves, solar water heating systems, heat pumps and biomass boilers. Making your own energy instead of using mains gas and electricity reduces your carbon footprint. It also means you’re less dependent on sources of energy that are increasingly subject to global demand and are likely to have high and volatile prices in future. If you’re considering installing microgeneration technology in your home, 34 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

it’s important to take a long-term view. Renewable energy may be expensive to install, but the time it takes to get your money back on an investment in microgeneration should come down. In addition, the government has now launched the Renewable Heat Incentive, which pays you to generate renewable heat, meaning these technologies will become more cost-effective. It’s important, however, to ensure your property is suitable for the technology you choose, as not all properties have a suitable south-facing roof or a garden. Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels generate electricity, while solar thermal panels heat water. You can now get cashback on solar PV panels thanks to the Feed-in Tariff. Cashback applies to other electricity-generating technologies, such as wind and hydropower, but not to technologies generating heat, such as solar thermal panels.

How to save on your energy bill Want some easy ways to save money on your energy bill? Look no further. You can save hundreds of pounds on your gas and electricity bills with our expert top tips. From choosing the best energy tariff for your needs to making your home more efficient, our advice will help you save money and give you a more comfortable home. Some of our top tips take no longer than a few seconds - so get started on saving money on your energy bill today.

Switch energy supplier If you haven’t switched your energy supplier in the last three years, there’s a good chance you could save money. If you want the same supplier for gas and electricity, then getting a dual-fuel deal will nearly always be cheaper. But if you don’t mind having separate suppliers, then research found that going for the cheapest electricity supplier and the cheapest gas supplier would save you even more money.

Turn down your thermostat Reducing room temperatures by just 1ºC can cut heating bills by up to £85-£90 a year in a typical home, according to the Energy Saving Trust. So put on a jumper rather than turn up the heating.

Replace light bulbs

Energy-saving light bulbs can help you cut your energy bills easily. If you replace 10 light bulbs in your house with energy-saving ones, you could save about £70 a year.

Cut draughts Stopping heat from escaping through unwanted gaps could help you save up to £50 a year. Take a look at the following areas: • Windows Use draught-proofing strips around the frame, Brush strips work better for sash windows. • Doors Use draught-proofing strips for gaps around the edges, and brush or hingedflap draught excluders on the bottom of doors. • Chimney and fireplace If you don’t use your fireplace, use an inflatable pillow to block the chimney, or fit a cap over the chimney pot • Floorboards and skirting Floorboards need to move, so use a flexible siliconebased filler to fill the gaps • Loft hatches You can prevent hot air escaping by using draught-proofing strips.

Get a new boiler Replacing an old G-rated gas boiler which has no controls with a new condensing model, including a programmer, could trim up to £340 a year from the gas bill of a typical home. Not too long and it will have paid for itself!

Home insulation Insulating both your loft and cavity walls can save you up to £300, and there are currently a number of free insulation deals to help you pay for it.

Get an energy monitor An energy monitor is a simple handheld gadget that estimates in real time how much energy you’re using, so you can see where to cut back.

Free energy help The Energy Saving Trust has a free home energy check tool on its website that could help you find out where to make energyefficiency improvements and how much you might save. It estimates some households could save £250 by following its personalised advice.

Your Mortgage

I

s now the perfect time to cut the cost of your mortgage? Rates are at historic lows - for the first time a two-year-fix is below 1% and a ten year fix is 2.39%. Many people can cut their mortgage costs by £1,000s. Yet after Brexit many are asking if could it get even cheaper. My mailbag’s been rammed with messages from nervous mortgage-holders wondering whether they should do anything with their mortgage due to the uncertain economy right now. I don’t have a crystal ball and don’t know what the future holds, but in short here’s my analysis on the situation… 1) Will fixes get cheaper? The rate at which fixes are set is based on complex ‘long-

How to find the cheapest mortgages For easy benchmarking, to see what’s out there, start with a comparison site that includes all deals, including ‘direct only’, those that aren’t offered by broker. These include my Mortgage Comparison at www.mse.me/mortgagebestbuys or sites such as TotallyMoney.com. Yet it’s not just the rate that counts: these days getting accepted isn’t easy. Both your credit score and whether you’re deemed able to afford the mortgage count. (The latter is often calculated as if interest rates are far higher than they are, so you can still pay if rates do rise.) Matching your characteristics to available mortgages is something a good mortgage broker can do that you can’t do yourself. But do ask if the broker will check all deals available to them and not just a panel of lenders. Also, check how much using a broker will cost and ensure you use a qualified one. Some phone-only brokers such as www. LandC.co.uk are fee-free but if you want face-to-face help, ask friends for a local broker recommendation or use www. Unbiased.co.uk or www.VouchedFor. co.uk to find one.

THANKS.” £80/month less per £1,000 of mortgage.

Don’t ignore the fees The smaller your mortgage, the bigger the impact of fees, especially on smaller mortgages. A good way to compare mortgages is to divide the fee across the discount or fixed period. So a £1,200 fee on a two-year (i.e., 24-month) deal is £50 a month – add that to the monthly repayment. And if you use www.mse. me/mortgage bestbuys to compare, the ‘total cost’ function does this automatically for you. Fix or variable rate? The advantage of a fix is you get price and budgeting certainty that the rate won’t move for a set time. Variable deals move with UK interest rates – and

sometimes just at the provider’s whim. Generally, you pay a little more to fix, but not much. Ask yourself how much you think rates will rise over the period. If safety’s what counts for you, err on the side of fixing, and fixing for longer. Got savings? They could get you a better mortgage For this, you need to find your current loan-to-value (LTV), the proportion of the value you’re borrowing. E.g., £80k on a £100k

property is 80% LTV. At every 5% LTV threshold from 95% down to 60%, deals tend to get better, so a little extra can have a big impact on your rate. For example, if you’ve a £150,000 home, and want a £137,000 remortgage, that’s 91% LTV, and the top 5yr fix is 4.49%. Yet use £2,000 of savings to reduce the borrowing, and you’d then be at 90% LTV – where the top 5yr fix is 2.84%, saving c. £1,600/ year in payments.

A will makes it much easier for your family There are three main options to choose from: or friends to sort everything out when you • use a solicitor die – without a will the process can be more • use a will writing service time consuming and stressful. • do it yourself If you don’t write a will, everything Read on to decide which you own will be shared out in a KNOW? Solicitors are the experts – they know their Writing a will is especially important if you stuff, and they should write you a watertight have children or other family who depend will that does exactly what you want it to. It’s on you financially, or if you want to leave the most expensive option, but it will give you something to people outside your immediate most peace of mind, especially if your affairs family. are complex. Writing a will – your options You should definitely consider a solicitor if: Everyone should have a will, and there are • your estate may have to pay Inheritance a number of ways to get yours done and

Why you shouldn’t die without a will When you die without leaving a will, the law decides who gets what and how much. It doesn’t matter what your relationship with those people was like when you were alive. By leaving a will that says clearly who should get your property and money when you die, you can prevent unnecessary distress at an already difficult time for your family or friends. Some parents have had to sue their own children to get a share of their partner’s estate when their unmarried partner dies. The law says that in this situation the children get everything. What is ‘intestacy’? Dying without a valid will is called intestacy or dying intestate.

Common rules if you don’t make a will • If you’re not married and not in a civil partnership, your partner is not legally entitled to anything when you die. • If you’re married, your husband or wife may inherit most or all of your estate and your children may not get anything (except in Scotland). This is true even if you are separated but not if you’re divorced. • If you have children or grandchildren, how much they are legally entitled to will depend on where you live in the UK – but if you make a will you can decide this yourself. • Any Inheritance Tax that your estate has to pay may be higher than it would be if you had made a will. • If you die with no living close relatives, your whole estate will belong to the Crown or to the government. This law is called bona vacantia.

Tax (currently, you’ll have to pay if your estate’s value is more than £325,000) • you’ve got a complex family situation, like former partners or estranged children, and you want to be sure that your estate can be divided as you wish • you want to protect someone’s interests after you’ve gone, like a disabled family member • you want to talk through the options with an expert or you need some support you can trust Use a will writing-service This is a cheaper option than a solicitor, and offers a fair amount of support and advice, but it’s very much a case of getting what you pay for. If you’re deciding between a will writer and a solicitor, remember that: • your will writer won’t necessarily be legally qualified • will writing services may not have been trading as long as many solicitors’ firms – an important consideration if you also want them to store your will, and • will writers aren’t regulated in the same way as solicitors, so there’s less comeback for you if things go wrong – so try and use a will writer who’s a member of a professional organisation Write your own will The cheapest – and perhaps riskiest – way to write a will is to do it yourself. You can buy templates online or at stationers’ shops. This is only really a suitable option if your affairs are very simple – for example if you’re married or in a civil partnership, you have no children, and you want to leave everything to your spouse or civil partner when you die. The template should show you what you need to do to make sure that it is signed, dated and witnessed properly, and that your old wills are revoked. It is important that these rules are followed, otherwise there is a risk that your homemade will be invalid. The law about inheritances and how they’re taxed can be complex, and things might change between you writing your will and when you die. That makes it risky to write your own will without any advice at all. Don’t delay It’s easy to make a will – and it will save your family unnecessary distress at an already difficult time. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 39

Late Availability 5 night Short Break November 17 - 22, Reduced from £401 to £215 4 night Short Break December 5 – 9, Reduced from £268 to £150 Do you fancy spending Christmas cosying up by an open fire, wrapping up for walks on the beach and having the whole of the North Norfolk coast to explore?

We have a 4 night break over Christmas (arriving Dec 23 and departing December 27) for £495 or the full week from Dec 23 for £648.

Heacham became popular as a seaside resort with the Victorians due to the opening of the railway between King’s Lynn and Hunstanton in the early 1860s. North Beach has an amusement arcade, a cafe and a fish bar. There are also beach huts available for hire. Both beaches have public toilet facilities. South Beach has its own cafe, which serves meals throughout the year and sells beach goods. The beaches at Heacham are situated on the east banks of The Wash; this means it is one of the few beaches in eastern England where the sun sets over the sea instead of over the land. Many say Heacham village is the largest village in the UK and has all the facilities you would need on your doorstep – Tesco Local, Co-Op, Indian restaurant, Fish and Chip shop, cycle hire, 3 pubs and the Coasthopper bus route stops just 30 seconds from the front door if you do not wish to travel by car to see all the sights of the coast.

STYLISH LUXURY

Dogs are welcome, so no one needs to miss out and the cottage will be festively decorated for your arrival for the Christmas season, please call 01406 371718 or email info@ heachamcottage.co.uk for more information.

able to handle the vehicle as you would normally. In an automatic car, select the ‘Winter’ setting or ‘2’ rather than ‘Drive’. This will limit the number of gear changes used, giving the car more control. Manual drivers should break earlier than usual and put the car into a low gear when approaching downhill slopes. Even well-practiced drivers can be surprised by patches of black ice and loss of control during a skid can cause panic. The first sign of being on ice could be that the tyres are making very little noise. Do not brake too aggressively or you will skid. When in a skid, depress the clutch and steer in the direction of the skid until you regain control. If you get stuck in snow, don’t try to rev your way in one direction to escape it as this will probably have the opposite effect. Move forwards and backwards slowly and in a high gear to carve a path out of the snow.

Motoring The splendid VW Golf GTI has been in the motoring arena for over four decades, and its appeal is still red-hot.

Volkswagen Golf GTI PROS ‘N’ CONS ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠

T

he word ‘hot’ is significant here, because the Golf GTI is the original ‘hot-hatch’ and it has generated many copycats. This obviously means the VW Golf GTI isn’t the only one in the hot-hatchback division anymore, and it has to try even harder to thrash the (relatively) young new comers that try and knock it down from its perch. Curiously, key adversaries come from inside Volkswagen Group’s inner sanctum. These motors include Skoda’s Octavia vRS and SEAT’s Leon Cupra. Both cars are brilliant in every respect, apart from the absence of the ‘VW Golf GTI’ badge. And, to be blunt, they produce comparable performance for less cash. But, that’s because they are not the celebrity that is the Golf GTI – and Volkswagen knows motorists will fork out more for that reason alone. The modern day Golf GTI is just such awesome fun behind the wheel. It is a grin-making motor that makes every mile travelled an utter delight. Toss the Golf along motorways and it stays as planted as a 100-year-old oak tree at 70mph. The 2.0-litre TSI 220PS fivedoor version, on test here, has wads of power on tap, masses of grip, alert and

meticulous steering, and virtually no body roll. Regardless of this, the suspension is efficient enough to keep the hot-hatch comfy. So, as well as being a champ of commuting on the straight sections, picking its way along snaky country roads and making mincemeat of tight bends is where the VW Golf GTI really comes into its own. Under the hood, the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, adjoined to a six-speed manual gearbox, gets you from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds on the way to a maximum speed of 152mph. Stimulating as these numbers are, they’re accompanied by extraordinarily meagre running costs. The GTI manages an average fuel consumption of 47.1mpg, while discharging only 139g/km of CO2 emissions. This mix of parsimony and performance makes the appeal of the present Golf GTI even more delicious. You can instantaneously tell a VW Golf GTI from a standard Golf by the larger 18-inch alloy wheels, the red styling on the lower front bumper, and the attractive roof spoiler. Peep inside and there’s a suggestion of retro, with the archetypal Golf GTI tartan upholstery and the gear knob formed to look like a golf ball. Regardless of the Volkswagen Golf GTI’s sporty standing in the automotive amphitheatre, the five-door car is as practical as any other hatchback. The cabin and load space are the same as the First Drive Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups

Price: £27,700 ordinary VW Golf. This means the car will seat five people and the boot is big enough to accommodate anything from a baby’s pushchair to family-sized bags of shopping. The Golf GTI comes festooned with interior gadgetry and kit, too. Included is a touchscreen infotainment system, sat-nav, a DAB radio and Bluetooth. Automatic lights, parking sensors adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and automatic windscreen wipers are also part of the standard paraphernalia. At the end of the day, we like a family vehicle to be safe. Well, on top of the rapidity, driving dynamics, economy, pragmatism and comfort, I’m pleased to say that the latest VW Golf GTI scored the maximum five-star rating possible under Euro NCAP crash safety assessments. So, what’s not to like about the modern day Volkswagen Golf GTI? It stirs the spirit as much as it ever did – and it still warrants the respect it first netted forty years ago.

‘Schmuck for a Night’ Tour South Holland Centre Thu 1 & Fri 2 December 8pm Tickets £24

When you’re looking for an experienced plumber few will come with more than local plumber Jim Miles. Following in his fathers’ footsteps Jim trained as a master plumber in London over 40 years ago, carrying out lots of varied work including maintenance plumbing, heating and gas work for the emergency services; fire, police and ambulance across the capital. Jim has always been proud to be part of nationally recognised accreditations and became Corgi registered over 25 years ago when the scheme first launched of course now this has been replaced by the Gas Safe Register which Jim is part of. Jim moved to Holbeach in 2001 and started J Miles Plumbing and Heating once he got to know the area in 2003. Realising that there is a huge demand in South Holland for oil the company became Oftec registered in 2007 allowing him to offer servicing for gas as well as oil. J Miles is also able to install both gas and oil in addition to their maintenance service. Jim commented; J Miles Plumbing and Heating offers full bathroom and shower room installs including tiling, boiler installations, servicing and landlord certificates (gas and oil) , full heating systems, system upgrades, power flushing and they are fully insured, giving you peace of mind. Covering Holbeach, Spalding, Long Sutton, Boston, Pinchbeck, Donington, Peterborough and all other surrounding areas giving customers great service at fantastic value.

“I like to give customers good old fashioned good customer service, we are efficient, great value for money and have an eye for the detail.”
