All you need to do is write a letter to Santa and post it in the special ‘SANTA POSTBOX’ in the shop in Swan Street, Spalding. Not sure what to write? Fun Junction will even provide a pre-printed template to write or draw a letter on if they wish to use this. Inside information tells us Santa likes bright colourful letters – so he hopes the letters are really bright and cheerful! Children should tell Santa if they’ve been good and which toys and games they
might like for Christmas. They should include their full name and age on the letter, so that Santa knows who it’s from. Boston College Investing in its Future
The Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, John Hayes, met with Boston College Principal, Sue Daley and Janet Hemmant, Director of Finance at to offer his congratulations on the College’s successful Government Funding. Under the Enhanced Renewal Grant, the College will benefit from £1million of investment. This, together with £2 million from the Colleges own funds, will enable the planned new building and investment programme to proceed. Only 15 Colleges in the whole Country have been successful in gaining the full allocation. The College is planning a range of new projects to its infrastructure including the development of a new 16 classroom teaching building, lease and refurbishment of the
Peter Payne Sports facility for the Colleges sports department, and further investments in technology and equipment that will assist numerous college departments. This investment will not only benefit the learners and staff but also the local community, enabling the college to introduce a range of new courses and opportunities. The College is in for a very busy year with not only the exciting projects planned in Boston, but in March 2011 it will also be opening a brand new College in Spalding as part of the £7.5 million Red Lion Quarter development. The College is a major partner in this exhilarating development and plans include; opening a new commercial high quality training restaurant with state of the art catering amenities; business focused
training facilities; increased access to a range of apprenticeships; ICT training; and, other vocational and educational courses available to local companies, students and the general public. Support to Boost Business Manufacturers working in the East Midlands food and drink sector are being invited to discover more about the support available to help boost business. The Food and Drink iNet, along with the Manufacturing Advisory Service East and Food Processing Faraday, will be joining forces to stage an event on Tuesday November 16th at the Holbeach Campus of the University of Lincoln. Running from 10am to 1.30pm, the event will turn the spotlight on ways to improve, innovate and make businesses more ‘lean’ and efficient.

Local Shopkeeper to star in BBC Reality TV series

BC One brings the story of the British High Street to life in Turn Back Time, an exciting and ambitious new series that transports four empty shops and a group of contemporary shop-keeping families back to the High Street’s heyday in the 1870s, before propelling them through a century of dizzying change right up to the Seventies. In the picturesque market square in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, the families’ lives are turned upside down as they get to grips with how shopkeepers lived and worked in six key eras of British history. Laced with real-life entertainment, family drama and human endeavour, the families have to deal with whatever history throws at them.
Alongside all the usual pressures of running a business, they’ll have to learn traditional skills and make their own produce by hand – each episode throwing new challenges their way as the High Street marches on into the modern era. Karl & Debbie Segison, along with their son and daughter spent 10 weeks filming during the Summer and we see their endeavours during November. Debbie commented; “I absolutely loved the filming process, whether we get any more TV work or not we are not sure but it would be wonderful. The differences between our modern day shop and the ones we worked in during filming would take so much time and space but we love talking about it, so please if anyone has questions, please pop in and ask us!”

Spotlight On The New Equality Act
The biggest change in discrimination law for a generation came into effect on the 1st October 2010, when the Equality Act came into force.
T
he new Act harmonises and strengthens the existing law making it unlawful to discriminate because of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation. These are now referred to as ‘protected characteristics’ in the new legislation.

Citizens Advice Chief Executive Gillian Guy, said, “Citizens Advice Bureaux can help people use the Equality Act to make their rights a reality, especially those who have been on the receiving end of unfair treatment or discrimination. South Holland Citizens Advice Bureau is urging people to come into their local bureau and report hate incidents, whether they have witnessed an incident or been a victim. A hate incident is when someone is targeted because of their disability, gender identity, race, religion or sexual orientation. Hate incidents include verbal or physical attacks and can happen to anyone. Where the incident is a crime it can also be referred to as a hate ‘crime’. Bureau Manager, Diane Clay, says : “We all have the right to live free from violence, harassment or hostility, but over the years we have seen cases showing how devastating hate incidents and discrimination can be on individuals, families and the wider community. Hate incidents target people simply because of who they are. “We want people to feel able to come in

A man with learning disabilities was subject to an online social network bullying campaign. The resident’s personal details were published and mobile phone videos of him were uploaded. Hundreds of people became members and joined the online campaign to mock and harass him. The case was resolved by the local Citizens Advice Bureau working with the police, the social network site and other partners to identify those responsible, remove the site, support the client and take action against those responsible. s Autumn is upon us it’s always tempting to ignore our skin as it’s going to be hidden under layers and layers of clothing until beach time rolls around again. But resist the urge and not only will you feel better under those layers but you’ll be ready to bare if you win the lottery and whizz off for some winter sun.
Try slathering yourself with a body butter after your bath or shower and see how fast your skin absorbs it. If your skin is really dry try using a body oil before your normal skin cream. You can also help by patting dry after your shower rather than scrubbing away with your towel. The slight dampness that remains on your skin will be trapped by the oil or lotion and help to keep your skin hydrated. Another thing that many of us just can’t be bothered with is exfoliating. It’s best to stand in the shower or in your bath to do this as it can get messy! I like to run my bath to about 10cm or so first and then I top it up and soak in the residue.
For most of us winter brings dry skin, partly due to seasonal changes but mostly it’s down to keeping the windows closed and turning up the thermostat. Some people may find that using this bath oil is enough to keep their skin soft, but most of us will need a little more moisturising.

Nick’s Toad in The Hole Nick Richer of Geo Adams & Sons in The Crescent, brings you his twist on this traditinal wonter warmer. Toad in the Hole is one of my comfort foods that I rustle up every bonfire night as well as extremely chilly evenings through the winter
Serves 4
Ingredients:
100g Plain Flour 400g Geo Adams Lincolnshire Sausages 2 Medium Onions 150ml Apple Juice 1 Pinch Freeze Dried Sage 2 tbsp Blended Olive Oil 2 Medium Eggs 225ml Semi Skimmed Milk
Method:
Preheat the oven to 220ºC, gas mark 7. Fry the sausages in a non-stick frying pan for 4-5 minutes. Stir in the onion wedges and fry for a further 5-7 minutes until the sausages are
golden brown. Pour the apple juice into the pan, add the dried sage and bring to the boil. Let the liquid bubble for 5-7 minutes until it reduces to a sticky glaze. Pour the oil into a medium-sized roasting tin and place it in the oven for 3-4 minutes to heat gradually. Meanwhile, whisk together all the remaining ingredients to make a smooth batter. Using a pair of scissors, cut each sausage in half. When the oil is hot and smoking, carefully add the sausages and onion mixture, then immediately add the batter. Return to the oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the batter is wellrisen and golden brown. Serve with gravy and some steamed Savoy cabbage which I always buy from Spalding Farm Shop.

An idle pet can quickly turn into a naughty pet! Just like humans pets need to stay busy and engaged. They need ample physical exercise and mental stimulation to lead a truly fulfilled and happy life. Sadly many pets are left under-stimulated; sat at home, bored and waiting for their owner to return from work. And with nothing to do and restless, little angels become little horrors. Forced to find ways to entertain themselves, they often engage in behaviour we dislike; excessive barking/meowing/ squawking, gnawing/chewing on things they shouldn’t, raiding the dustbin and scratching furniture – to name a few! To prevent problems, you need to keep your pet physically and mentally stimulated.
“Did you know that mental stimulation is just as tiring for a pet as physical stimulation?” Exercise is an ideal way to burn off any pet’s excess energy. But without you to lead the way, it’s unlikely your pet is going to run laps or do 50 sit-ups. So, as a pet owner, part of your responsibility is to ensure your pet gets safe, enjoyable exercise on a regular basis. All pets need some physical activity to help them live a happy, healthy life. With dogs, structured games as part of any exercise can be hugely beneficial, such as fetch or tug of war. Not only do they provide great exercise, but they also teach your pet impulse control and they strengthen the bond between you.

You may be lucky and your dog plays fetch naturally, but the majority of owners have to struggle to make their dog understand. Few dogs instinctively get the concept of retrieving. Some dogs will chase after the toy but won’t bring it back, while others simply look at you with a confused expression, wondering why you repeatedly throw their toy away! Helping your dog learn to love retrieving can be as simple as finding a toy he really likes. Dogs can be very particular about the toys they’ll fetch. Some prefer tennis balls or specialty toys, while others can’t understand why you won’t just throw the stick! Some popular fetch toys include the ‘Company of Animals Fantasy Flyer’ or the ‘Kong Air Squeaker Tennis Ball’. If your dog doesn’t like to put toys in his mouth, try soaking a plush toy or a tennis ball in chicken stock; this will entice him to taste the toy, and you can reward him for this by giving him a treat. He’ll soon figure out that putting the toy in his mouth pleases you to no end, and then you can start teaching him to fetch it. If your dog is a real whiz at fetching, you can make the game more challenging for him with a few simple tricks. Try throwing the toy uphill so that he has to work harder to run after it. If your dog chases tennis balls, use a ‘Happy Pet Fling and Fetch Tennis Ball Launcher’ to send the ball farther away.
Puzzled? Now it would be great if we all had enough time to give our pets all the personal attention they need and play fetch at least a couple of times a day, but with today’s busy lifestyles this is not always possible. In these situations, you can keep your pooch occupied with a food-stuffed puzzle toy, such as the ’Animal Instincts Puzzla Treat Ball’ or the ‘Nina Ottosson Dog Tornado’. These types of interactive toys can provide our dogs with some fun and a challenge even when we can’t be there to play along.

Family Life Giving children the opportunity to use their imaginations
Following the theme from previous issues of outdoor play I’m continuing the idea of developing play experiences for children by focusing on role play. What kind of opportunities do we provide for children’s learning and development that are offered through imaginative play outdoors? What do I mean by the term imaginative play? Well it’s all about pretend play, make believe, fantasy, dressing up and acting out. As a child I use to spend hours pretending to be someone else or imagining I was in a different place. I had an imaginary friend who would join me on my adventures and the things we could do were unlimited. That’s the great thing about role play, there are no limits to what you can pretend to be doing and what great fun children can have. The best part is without even knowing it your child will learn and develop their knowledge and understanding of the wider world. Giving children the opportunity to use their imaginations helps them to think symbolically, they can draw directly on their own experiences and act out familiar tasks, for example shopping, building and outings such as going to the doctors. As they copy actions and engage in different activities it helps children to have a better understanding about the things we adults take for granted in everyday life. Children may find certain events challenging and role play helps them to process what’s going on and help them to sort out their thoughts. In the outdoors children have the freedom and flexibility to be active, messy, inventive and to play in large dynamic groups or pairs. Many children are simply more relaxed outdoors. Often role play experiences have a
greater authenticity and meaning when acted outdoors; for example, a car wash, taking baby for a walk and chasing around dealing with baddies and danger. Allowing children to take their chosen props and toys outside will capture their enthusiasm. It will also connect with other outdoor activities that I have talked about such as water play, den making and construction providing a wider range of resources and learning potential. Have a go at supporting your children’s learning potential through role play and encourage them to explore this in the outdoors. If you were invited to interview with the President of the United States in the Oval Office, there would be no question in your mind as to the level of professionalism you’d want to portray. Your grooming would be impeccable, your clothes spotless and lint free, your shoes in perfect condition. Yet job seekers often make the mistake of dressing too casual for job interviews. Never dress business casual for a job interview. Your suit should be classic in style, and conservative in color. Women, don’t wear low necklines or short skirts. Men, make sure your shirt is pressed to perfection and you tie isn’t too loud. Likewise, avoid all perfumes, scented deodorants and aftershave lotions. The quickest way to connect with your interviewer is to mirror their speaking style. If he speaks fast, you speak fast. If he has a slow manner of speaking, so do you. More importantly, you must match the level of detail that your interviewer speaks with. There are some people that communicate very directly. When asked a question, they answer in the shortest manner possible. Others are story tellers who embellish their language with plenty of details. You must listen very carefully to your interviewer to discover their level of detail in communicating. If you provide too much detail to one who is direct, you will overload them with what they see as extraneous information. They will quickly loose interest in you. On the other hand, if you are too direct in your answers to one who enjoys details they will suspect that you are trying to hide facts. It’s true that you only have one opportunity to make a first impression. If you blow the first few minutes of your interview you may have lost your chance at a great job. Remember, you’ll most likely interview several people for each job opportunity. You’ll have to make a great first impression with each interviewer. Don’t get lax in your first-impression strategy. Use these tips for each and every person you interview with and you’ll be on your way to your next best career opportunity.
