What’s On

So that’s the summer holidays over and done with and the children are heading back to school – I know I say this every year but doesn’t it go quickly? Due to having building work at home I was unable to enjoy my garden this summer but it did prompt visits to green spaces away from home which was lots of fun! If you have children who are coming up to school age or are due to make the move up to secondary school we have shared our thoughts on why it is so important to go to school open days and what to look out for. Choosing the right school for your child is so important you owe it to both yourself and your children to do it right. If you are at the start of your searches then good luck and we hope that attending open days and evenings will enable you to make an informed decision. Elsewhere in the magazine we share some hearty autumn recipes using the humble Lincolnshire Sausage, there’s nothing better than a little comfort food when the summer weather finally begins to fade! Our motoring correspondent Tim Barnes-Clay has a look at some of the new cars being released with the 65 plates, if you are shopping around for a new car then this might article might point you in the right direction! Finally we pay a visit to Spire Dental in Long Sutton and tell the story of this contemporary surgery. Enjoy the issue.

Spalding Man’s Extraordinary Story A man whose mother won a landmark victory to have his birth certificate amended to female when he was a child is now fighting for it to revert to being male. Joe Holliday was born with a rare defect that led to his genitalia being partially unformed and although at birth he was registered male, when he was 11 months old doctors advised he should be raised as Joella. Joe, 27, of Acacia Avenue, Spalding, said: “I feel as if my identity was stolen away from me when I was a baby and now I want it back.” Joe, who has told his story in a book, extracts of which were published in the Daily Mail in August, was born suffering with cloacal exstrophy, an extremely rare birth defect that left his abdomen partially formed and organs exposed on the outside of his body. Doctors feared he would not survive and an emergency christening was held during which he was named Joel David Holliday. With no obvious genitalia present, doctors were not confident whether he was male or female but the name Joel was settled upon because his parents had only chosen a boy’s name at that stage and were yet to agree on a girl’s name should they have a daughter. Joe underwent lifesaving surgery and, although he was left with a colostomy and a raft of ongoing health issues that have required many surgeries, he survived. It was only when he was 11 months old that a specialist said had Joe been born into his care he would have designated him female. The specialist said he felt Joe would have a much better future as a girl. Joe had no penis and to try to live as a man would be horrendously psychologically challenging, Joe’s mum – Julia Farmer, 47, of Pinchbeck – was told. Julia felt she had to follow the expert advice

and renamed Joel, Joella on his first birthday.Julia thought she would be able to simply request Joella’s birth certificate be changed to female but the Government refused to amend it. It said a birth certificate was a record of the facts at birth and Joella had been born a boy. Julia sought legal advice and spent many years battling behind closed doors to try to get the new birth certificate. Without it, she feared, little Joella could be forced to go to a boys’ school and when she reached adulthood, as legislation stood then, she would not have been able to marry a man. In 1996, having been continuously refused the new birth certificate, Julia turned to The Press for help. The story captivated national and international media and eight-year-old Joella’s photograph and story were splashed across newspapers and TV. Princess Diana even wrote to Joella offering her support – but the Government continued to refuse to give her a new birth certificate. It wasn’t until a barrister offered to help Dianne Miller, the Spalding-based solicitor who had worked tirelessly and for free on Joella’s case, that change was achieved. Barrister Robert Hill argued that Joella’s lack of genitalia at birth meant she could have been classified either male or female – or neither. He argued Joella was

essentially ‘intersex’ and in being registered male, an error had been made. In November 1998, the Government accepted the argument and issued an amended birth certificate to Joella. Joella, once again, featured on TV shows and in newspapers across the world – even being flown with her family to New York to appear on the Maury Povich chat show. Everyone hoped the new birth certificate marked a happy ending for Joella but sadly it was not to be. Horrifically bullied at school, Joella had a nervous breakdown when she was 11 and went on to spend years battling depression and suicidal thoughts. Joe said: “I felt like my mind was as broken as my body. I knew I wasn’t like anyone else – particularly other girls.” Despite what many newspapers had said when reporting upon her case, Joella had never been interested in wearing dresses or playing with dolls. In her teens she was prescribed oestrogen to encourage her body to develop womanly curves but she wasn’t attracted to men. She told herself she was a lesbian. Until Joella was 25 she did not think it was possible for her to have a gender test but when she was referred to a new doctor he ran one. It showed she had XY chromosomes, the genetic make-up typical to a man. Joella later discovered she had been born with undescended testes. Joe knew he needed to finally be true to himself and began transitioning back to being male. Joe said: “It has been strange seeing my body shape change, the arrival of facial and body hair and my voice deepen, but it feels right. Finally I feel happy.” Joe’s book She’s A Boy, written with Louise Chapman and published by Thistle Publishing, is Laminate Carpets available from Amazon now.

Exercise, Dementia Cafe opens in Spalding Spalding Health and Wellbeing (SHAW) Community Interest Company has received funding from the Lincolnshire Dementia Support Network to establish an exercise and dementia cafe. The Cafe will run every Wednesday from 1.30pm- 3.30pm at Tonic Health in Spalding. The Dementia Support Network has been established by Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust - a collaboration between Lincolnshire County Council, and the NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups, with the aim to help people with dementia, and people who care for them, to participate in a wide range of activities that will help them to maintain as good a quality of life as possible. SHAW’s proposal was the only one offered funding in the South Lincolnshire region, and is one of 12 initiatives across the county. SHAW will be offering a range of exercise and movement therapies for people with dementia, including Yoga, Tai Chi and seated exercise, with the aim to get people moving more, to help improve

balance and co-ordination, whilst getting the feel good factor gentle exercise can provide. At the same time as the movement activities are taking place, carers will have access to a range of services including relaxation therapies, meditation, and movement classes, allowing them the opportunity to relax and unwind. Both groups will then reconvene for refreshments. A variety of services will be invited in to talk about different areas of life which may affect people with dementia, their carers and families, including safety in the home, money management, help and support available. The funding will mean the Exercise Dementia Cafe will be able to run for a year, without financial worry, and it is hoped that over that period of time, the project can be self-sustaining to allow it to continue into the future. SHAW are asking for a donation of £2 per person per week to help support the project in the long term, making it financially viable. For further information and to register your place, please call Tonic Health on 01775 725059.

Lincolnshire Solicitors honoured for helping to secure vital charity funds A local Lincolnshire solicitors’ firm has been recognised by Cancer Research UK after facilitating over £500,000 worth of gifts in the last year from people choosing to support the charity through their Wills. David Heath, Partner & Head of the Wills & Probate department, of Ringrose Law Solicitors, was presented with a special certificate to acknowledge the support. Cancer Research UK relies heavily on people leaving gifts in their Wills to continue its life-saving work. Over a third of its research into finding better ways to treat, diagnose and prevent cancer is funded through legacy giving. The charity’s Regional Legacy Manager for the East Midlands, Lisajane Gooden, explained: “We all reach a stage at some point in our lives when we start to look ahead and consider what will happen to our financial affairs when we’re no longer around. “At Cancer Research UK we

work with a number of local solicitors to offer a free Will service to anyone aged 55 or over, enabling individuals to make an all-important first Will or update an existing Will. “The service is becoming more and more popular and while it is provided free of any obligation, the vast majority of people choose to leave a gift to the charity as they appreciate the progress we are making and our absolute

determination to keep more families together for longer.” Ringrose Law has been partnering with Cancer Research UK over the past 9 years and throughout this time it has enabled many people to fulfil their wish of remembering the charity in their Will. Research has been responsible for saving nearly 520,000 lives in the UK since the 1980s and as the advances accelerate, Cancer Research UK is already laying the foundations for the next generation of cancer treatments that will save millions of lives worldwide. David Heath said: “Ringrose Law is really proud to receive this special recognition from Cancer Research UK. It is a truly inspiring charity which has been responsible for many of the key advances that have been made in the fight against cancer over recent decades. And it continues to look ahead, pushing the boundaries of medical science”.

Council tax discount review Approximately 11,500 households are being urged to tell South Holland District Council if they are claiming council tax discounts they are not entitled to. The authority gives a 25 per cent council tax discount to more than 11,500 households where there is only one adult resident at the property. In the last financial year, this totalled more than £3.1million. The Council will shortly be comparing its council tax information with other databases to identify those cases where more than one adult is living at an address and a discount is still being claimed. Councillor Peter Coupland, Portfolio Holder for Finance, said: “We believe most council tax discounts are claimed honestly and legitimately but we know there are times where a household’s circumstances change and people forget to tell us their eligibility to a discount should end. “However, it is a statutory requirement for council tax payers to tell us within 21 days if they think they should no longer qualify for a discount. If you receive a discount you think you should not receive, this is your final chance to tell us, before we contact you. We are obliged to amend any records we find to be incorrect, back to the date of the change. This means that householders do not benefit from withholding information from us and it makes it fair for everyone. It could mean some households will find they have a considerable amount of council tax arrears to pay. Council Tax payers can contact South Holland District Council’s Revenues service by ringing 01775 761161 and select Option 4, email counciltax@sholland.gov.uk or call into our offices in Priory Road, Spalding. For more information about the available discounts and exemptions, householders can check the website: www. sholland.gov.uk

John Hayes MP becomes Breast Cancer Ambassador John Hayes MP for South Holland and The Deepings has demonstrated his support for women with breast cancer by becoming a parliamentary ambassador for leading charity Breast Cancer Now. John Hayes joins 169 MPs across the country who are pledging their support to Breast Cancer Now – the UK’s largest breast cancer charity – to remind fellow politicians and constituents alike that breast cancer is not a ‘done deal’ and that immediate action must be taken to stop the disease taking lives. Nearly 12,000 women are still dying from breast cancer each year in the UK – an average of 18 women a year in each constituency. Breast Cancer Now will be working closely with the 170 Breast Cancer Ambassadors to help them take action to tackle breast cancer in their constituencies and in Parliament, and to ensure that the UK’s most common cancer remains high on the

political agenda. John Hayes MP, said: “Too many women are still dying from breast cancer in the UK. We must act now if we are to finally put an end to deaths from the disease and I am therefore very proud to support Breast Cancer Now and their bold 2050 ambition. Together, we urgently need to put the spotlight back on this dreadful disease locally and nationally. By becoming a Breast Cancer Ambassador, I will ensure that action is taken on behalf of the women and families affected by breast cancer within the local community of South Holland and The Deepings.” Breast Cancer Now – the new charity created from the merger of Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer – launched in June 2015, aiming to unite everybody affected by the disease to ensure that we are the generation that finally stops women dying from it.

Lottery Winner encourages others to recycle

A delighted woman who won £1,000 in South Holland District Council’s Green Bag Lottery has urged others to get recycling. Diane Smart, of Sutton St James, was ‘stunned’ to win the top prize and was presented with her cheque this week. Mrs Smart said: “We don’t normally win things so when I found out I thought it was a joke! This has come as a very nice surprise and all because we’ve been doing our recycling properly, which is something I just get on with. Recycling isn’t hard to do and makes such a big difference so I would encourage anyone who doesn’t do it to get started.” Mrs Smart’s win marks the end of the Green Bag Lottery, which was set up in February 2014 to promote good recycling and raise awareness of its importance. Every four weeks, ten households were randomly and secretly selected to take part. Each one that presented recycling correctly for at least three of the four weeks was awarded £100 and they were then placed into a draw to win the grand prize of £1,000. Since the lottery launched there have been a total of 127 winners out of a possible 160 households chosen, showing that South Holland residents mean business when it comes to recycling. Over £10,000 in prize money was handed out, which includes £100 prizes and £4,000 in grand prize draw money.

Refreshed from our holidays it is often a good time to take on new adventures and challenges. Volunteering is something many of us do and in fact there are very few people who are not either actively involved as a volunteer or have their lives affected by volunteers. There are volunteers in our armed services, volunteer firemen, policemen, cadets, scouts, Lives medics and first responders, volunteer car drivers, hospital volunteers, ‘in bloom’ volunteers making our towns and villages look stunning, volunteers running our community centres, village halls, senior forums, Citizens Advice Bureau, women’s institutes, sports and social clubs and many more. It is clear we cannot survive without them and they undoubtedly should be far more valued than they are because they make such a huge contribution to our society. I am currently involved with two in the Holbeach area, at Holbeach Youth Club and most recently I am now recruiting for Volunteers to help run the new Community Hub Library in Holbeach. No previous experience is required for either, just a willingness to help, give something back to the community and enjoy working with people of all ages and abilities. Basic training in simple bite sized sessions is provided for both, relevant checks are undertaken where required and support is on hand for the practical and fun part of actually helping other people to make the most

of the facilities in our community. Importantly you can give as much or as little of your time as you like, it is not a job and it should be done because you enjoy doing it and maybe want to just get out of the house to meet new friends. Volunteering brings together all sorts of people from different backgrounds, some with professional qualifications and others with no qualifications at all, but a chance to increase, even at an older age, their skills and local knowledge, all of which can be hugely rewarding. If you are interested in helping out at the Community Hub Library in Holbeach, which will open in the middle of October or Holbeach Youth Club, which will be celebrating its’ 70th Anniversary on Saturday, 19th September, then please let me know –maybe you were one of the original volunteers, now that would be great! Watch the local press for more details on both. If you are interested in volunteering in general then please do contact the Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service www.lincolnshirecvs.org.uk who have experienced workers and a wealth of knowledge to help you with any aspect of volunteering, from being a volunteer, helping with the dreaded DBS checks, getting grant funding to helping local community groups to become fully constituted bodies.

Simply Property

Should you Buy with your Head or Heart?

F

❱ BY HAYLEY HAMMOND, SIMPLY PROPERTY

or most of us buying a home is likely to be the most expensive purchase we will ever make in our lives. That’s why we advise that you take time to fully appreciate if the property is the right property for you and your family. It is all too easy to walk into a property, spend 30 minutes there and fall in love but this is a huge decision and financial commitment and needs a serious plan! Whilst it’s important to like a property you buy you do need to think about the practicalities too. Things to do: Research well. Spend some time gathering information about the property - use the power of the internet, discuss with your estate agent if you don’t live in the area what is good and bad; they should have local area knowledge, and ask for a property particulars pack. Speak to the local authority to identify any known future impacts or restrictions on the property such as development or listed building status. Make a list of questions you want to ask the seller/ agent before visiting the property e.g. local schools, neighbours, age of gas boiler or electrical wiring, any drainage issues.

“Chat with neighbours to see what they like or dislike about of the property and neighbourhood.”

Drive and walk around the area in which the property is situated and view an aerial view (you can use Google Maps) to get a feel for the immediate surroundings. Think about what is important to you and your family not just now but in the next few years. It’s time to view the property, think about measuring the rooms and door openings as you need to confirm that your furniture can be accommodated within the property. With the sellers permission consider taking photographs of the property to refer back to. It is important to keep perspective, don’t discount a property because a £600 table won’t fit in!! Chat with neighbours to see what they like or dislike about of the property and neighbourhood. Think about the neighbouring properties becoming extended… is it likely to impact on the property? Visit the property more than once and preferably at different times of the day, and don’t be afraid of visiting again if you feel the need to! So, when you’re searching for your next home think with your head and a little bit of your heart! If you are planning on selling your home or are looking for a new home please call SIMPLY PROPERTY on 01775 640622 or find us online at www.simplyproperty.org

Advice

Extra money for people in work ❱ BY LISA BARWELL

If you are working, you may still be able to get benefits or tax credits if you are on a low income. It does not matter whether you are working for someone else or self-employed. The benefits you can get depend on your circumstances, your earnings and other money you have coming in, and on how many hours you work each week. There are different benefits for people who work less than 16 hours a week and for people who work 16 hours or more. If you have more than one job, you should add the hours from both jobs together. If the number of hours you work changes from week to week, your benefit will depend on your average hours.

If you work fewer than 16 hours If you work fewer than 16 hours a week, you may be able to claim Income Support or Jobseeker’s Allowance. However, if you have a partner who lives with you and works 24 hours a week or more, you will not be able to claim these benefits. Your partner may be able to claim Working Tax Credit instead You could also be entitled to some Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction to help with the costs of rent and Council Tax. If you have children, you can claim Child Tax Credit and Child Benefit. You can get these benefits whether or not you do any work.

If you work 16 hours or more a week

If you work 16 hours or more a week, you may be entitled to Working Tax Credit. This will depend on your circumstances and how much money you have coming in. You may also be entitled to other benefits, for example, if you are on a low income you could get some Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction to help with rent and Council Tax. If you have children, you can claim Child

Benefit and you may also be entitled to some Child Tax Credit. You do not have to be working to get Child Tax Credit, but your earnings will affect the amount you get.

Who can get Working Tax Credit The number of hours a week you have to work to be able to get Working Tax Credit depends on your circumstances.

If you’re single or in a couple, and have no children, you can qualify if: • • •

you are 25 or over and you work at least 30 hours a week, or you are 16 or over and you work at least 16 hours a week and you are disabled and you get a qualifying benefit, or you are 60 or over and you work at least 16 hours a week.

If you’re single and have at least one child, you can qualify if: • you are 16 or over and you work at least 16 hours a week and you are responsible for a child or young person.

If you’re in a couple and you are responsible for a child or young person, you can qualify if: • • • •

you are 16 or over and you or your partner works at least 16 hours a week and the two of you work at least 24 hours a week between you in total. For example, you can meet this condition if you work 16 hours a week and your partner works 8 hours a week. If only one of you works, that person must work at least 24 hours, or you are 16 or over and you work at least 16 hours a week and you are disabled and you get a qualifying benefit you are 16 or over and you work at least 16 hours a week and your partner is a hospital in-patient or entitled to Carer’s Allowance or in prison or gets certain disability benefits you are 60 or over and work at least 16 hours a week. There is an online questionnaire you can use to find out if you might qualify for WTC. Go to the GOV.UK website at www.gov.uk.

Make Me

Percy Jackson and the Greek Heroes

By Lee Child “Why is this town called Mother’s Rest?”That’s all Reacher wants to know. A worried woman named Michelle Chang, who mistakes him for someone else: her missing partner in a private investigation she thinks must have started small and then turned lethal. Reacher has no particular place to go and all the time in the world to get there, and there’s something about Chang...so he teams up with her. He thinks: How bad can this thing be? But before long he’s plunged into a desperate race through LA, Chicago, Phoenix, and San Francisco and through the hidden parts of the Internet, up against thugs and assassins. Walking away would have been easier. But, as always, Reacher’s rule is: If you want me to stop, you’re going to have to make me.

By Rick Riordan The next in the popular series with Percy Jackson. In this gripping follow-up to Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods, demigod Percy Jackson tells the stories of twelve of the original Greek heroes in all their gory, bloodthirsty glory. Want to know who cut off Medusa’s head? Which hero was raised by a she-bear? Who tamed Pegasus, the winged horse? Percy has all the answers. Rick Riordan is an award-winning writer. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Rick’s first novel featuring the heroic young demigod, was the overall winner of the Red House Children’s Book Award in 2006 and is now a blockbuster film franchise, starring Logan Lerman.

Choosing a School

Open Days and Evenings

A

Why it is so important to take the time to attend

friend of mine has a daughter who is about to reach school age and she feels like she’s at the start of a very long journey. “Getting the right start is so, so important” she said to me, “I don’t want to base my decisions purely on an Ofsted report, I want to know more”and she’s absolutely right. I’ve also got friends who have children who will be starting secondary school in September 2016 and they also have the task of finding the right school. So whether your child is about to start primary or secondary there is a lot to consider. Which is why Open Days and Evenings can be really important. No matter how good a website or school brochure is,nothing beats walking through the door and you and your child having a good look around in person. You will both be able to get a feel for the school, take a look at what is important to you (which will be different things!!) and hopefully help you hone your options until you are ready to make a decision. For parents of primary age children often their first port of call is to speak to the local authority and see which schools are in their catchment area which will very quickly narrow down the choices available. For secondary schools, eleven plus results will reveal the options. When you have made your shortlist find out when the Open Days or Evenings are and put your name down to attend. You might like to have a conversation with your child to find out the most important things they hope to find at their new school. For secondary children, think about the extra-curricular activities they like to do and bear them in mind. Generally speaking, Open events tend to follow a similar format with a welcome from the head and possibly some of the teachers. You are then taken on a tour of the school. It’s the perfect opportunity to speak to the head, the teachers and current students. If it’s an open day rather than an evening then there is a very good chance you will get to see a typical day at the

school. Enjoy looking around the classrooms and pay attention to the displays on the walls, they give a good flavour of what is being taught and how the children’s work is presented and celebrated. Take a look at the number of students in each class and the teacher to pupil ratio, it will give you a good idea how much contact time your child will have with their teacher. Also ask about the level of contact between parents and teachers - how often do they get in touch, what for and how? Many schools take part in the ParentMail system which keeps parents up to date via email and text. If you like regular contact then make sure you will receive it! Ask about extra-curricular activities and school trips. Even if you are pretty sure that you know which school you would like your child to attend make sure you look around more than one school to give you a really good idea of how the school compares to others. More than anything ask yourself “Will my child be happy here?” Each school will have its own strengths and matching them to your child’s interests and strengths is the ultimate aim.

65 Reg Cars

Top new 65 reg cars The first day of September will see status-conscious motorists across the United Kingdom making a beeline for cars with shiny new 65 plates

S

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY

o, if you’re thinking of getting in on the latest registration as a buyer or your company vehicle’s up for renewal, check out the these top new cars of 2015. 1 - Volkswagen Passat GTE Saloon The new VW Passat is one of the most pioneering business-cum-family sized cars to hit Britain. It is the first Passat with a plug-in hybrid drive system, delivering zero-emissions, too. Thrills haven’t been forgotten either, because, in GTE mode, the Volkswagen sprints like an athlete. The car is well-built, and the seats are comfortable. Leg and headroom are very good, as well, while the boot is gigantic. This is possibly green motoring at its classiest. The Passat GTE is available to order now, with first UK deliveries in October. Priced from: £33,000 2 - Jaguar XE This new Jaguar comes brimming with technology, ultra-efficient engines and sharpsuited aesthetics. Inside, there are slabs of wood, leather and brushed aluminium, bringing the XE level with other business sized premium saloons. There is plenty of capacity for adults up front, and legroom in the rear equals what you get in German rivals. And with 455-litres of boot space you’ll easily get the family’s luggage in at weekends. The Jaguar has accomplished an amazing balance between ride comfort and handling prowess. Where competitors like the BMW 3 Series sits on the dynamics side of the fence and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class prefers luxury, the XE achieves both. Priced from: £26,990

3 - Subaru Outback The new Outback sports a fresh exterior design, a higher quality interior and a raft of new safety tech. The Subaru is available with diesel or petrol power, and has been developed to offer space, practicality, safety and all-terrain versatility, too. This makes it a very adaptable business-cumleisure motor – especially if you’re based in more rural areas. The boot capacity has increased against the departing model to 559 litres, with a new Smart Power Tailgate for greater ease-of-use. Priced from: £27,995 4 - Audi Q7 Although the exterior dimensions have been reduced, the new Audi Q7 offers more interior room, and has the all-important seven seats. All Q7s come with heaps of kit, including keyless go, cruise control, and 19 inch alloy wheels. All seats in the second and third rows have Isofix fixtures for child seats. Busy parents can therefore mount up to six child seats in the new Audi Q7. This Audi ticks all the boxes needed to be a success for business, family or pleasure, thanks to its large carrying practicality, classy interior, powerful performance and relaxed ride. Priced from: £44,995 5 - Volvo XC90 The new XC90 has an interior that’s contemporary, airy and neat. Amongst the soft leather, wood and metal finishes, the seven-seater features chairs that free up space, both in the second and third rows. The SUV boasts all the virtues that made the initial model one of Volvo’s most profitable cars ever, combining brilliant handling and comfort with superior get-you-there ability and

flexibility. The XC90 does it all; it’s perfect for a family, it looks good for business and it’s just the thing for anyone needing a safe, grippy car for all seasons. Priced from: £45,750 6 - Ford Mondeo Vignale This is the first vehicle to be introduced as part of Ford’s new Vignale luxury brand. Available in four-door and estate body styles, the Mondeo Vignale delivers exceptional executive car refinement with a quilted and tuxedo-stitched leather interior. It delivers a comfortable ride and incorporates enhanced sound insulation to better isolate road noise. The Ford Vignale Mondeo is available to order now at new flagship Ford Stores, currently opening across the UK. Priced from: £29,045 7 - Audi A8 Offered in standard or Long Wheelbase formats, the latest A8 features a rationalised choice of engines. It is loaded with a host of awesome tech, too, making the driving experience as luxurious as possible. The Audi A8’s cabin is sophisticated and sturdily built and the power-plant’s available mean the car is rapid, whichever model you opt for. The entry-level A8 is the 258bhp 3.0-litre TDI diesel and this is as swift as you’re ever likely to need. A more potent 4.2-litre TDI is also obtainable, while the lightening quick S8 has a 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol engine that delivers 513bhp. Combined with the A8’s titanic size, the more powerful engines aren’t cheap to run, but if you keep with the oil-burners, official fuel economy figures are approaching 50mpg. Priced from: £59,585

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Pets Corner

How To Occupy Anxious Pets In their natural habitat animals usually live in groups, so when we leave them on their own they can become bored and anxious. Here are some ideas to keep your pet occupied. Reassuring Sounds It can help to leave a low volume radio on. Make it a talk show rather than music, as chatter is more relaxing than ‘up and down’ sounds. You can leave the TV on instead if you prefer, your pet probably won’t watch it, but the sound may prove soothing. Provide Some Toys Toys can help keep your pet entertained. Cats enjoy cat nip, a look-out tower, or even a cardboard box to hide in. Dogs appreciate chewy toys, but avoid squeaky toys when they are home alone as they can cause overstimulation. Buy them something to get their teeth into instead. A Safe Haven A comfortable warm bed is a must too. Try leaving a piece of your old worn clothing in there, or try plug-in pheromone diffusers as the scent can calm anxious pets. Kong Are Excellent Kongs are available for cats or dogs, and they are great at keeping them occupied. A Kong is a tough, non-toxic, dishwasher safe, rubber toy that you can stuff with treats. A dog or cat’s natural instinct is to forage for food, so a Kong will keep them entertained for hours, especially if you prepare it the night before and store it in the freezer. It will take them longer to retrieve all the treats when it’s frozen solid. Dogs enjoy chewing a Kong, and because chewing is a stress reliever for them, you may find it prevents destructive

habits in your home. Some cat Kongs have feathers attached and are easier to bat and chase rather than chew. A Daily Visitor If you work all day then it might help to have a friend pop in to break up your pet’s lonely hours. If there is no-one you can ask, look for a dog walker or cat-sitter to help you. It might seem like an unnecessary expense, but it’s cheaper than replacing the carpets, curtains and furniture.

Two’s Company You may find that your bird, rabbit, hamster or other caged animal is lot happier with company. Few animals live in solitary conditions and all of them pair up to mate. Imagine life without a friend for company. Be careful when you introduce pets though, start off with separate cages and place them close to one another, so they can become used to smells and sounds without thinking an intruder has arrived. And make sure you’ve neutered! If you need any advice, pop into the store and chat with our staff. We have plenty of experience to share with you.

e all diet at some point in our lives and it is often for different reasons, some for the health benefits, some to change the way they look and others to kick-start a new way of eating. There are the tried and tested methods which are popular in the UK which are detailed below and there are diets which dip in and out of our collective consciousness – Atkins anyone?! Whatever reasons you have for wanting to lose weight it is always best to speak to your doctor before starting any kind of weight loss plan.

goals. Through weekly meetings you will learn more about your approach to food and gain hints and tips from others. You begin with a free food list which contains all the foods you are able to eat in unlimited amounts. You will set your own goals and be given the support you need to achieve them. Details of your nearest meeting can be found at www.slimmingworld.com

Weight Watchers Over the last 50 years Weight Watchers has been in the business of changing the way people view food. Moving with the times you are able to follow their healthy-eating programme in a way that suits you , either online only, by attending weekly meetings or a combination of the two. Using the Weight Watchers ProPoints weight loss system no foods are off-limits. Within their literature you will find that every food has a ProPoints value. Depending on your weight you will be allocated a daily ProPoints allowance for you to spend in any way you choose (there are even extra points available during the week should you need them). Details of your nearest meeting can be found at www.weightwatchers.co.uk

Cambridge Diet The Cambridge Plan was created by Bio-chemist Dr Alan Howard and Dr Ian McLean-Baird as they sought to develop the “perfect diet”. It was launched in the UK in 1984 and 30 million people around the world have used it. Their soups, shakes, bars, savoury rice, spaghetti Bolognese, vanilla rice pudding and porridge can be used as a sole source of nutrition or combined with regular food for a more gradual weight loss or as a weight management system. Throughout your time your personal consultant will motivate and encourage you and help you to maintain your new look when you reach your goals. Details of your nearest consultant can be found at www. cambridgeweightplan.com

Slimming World Slimming World’s eating plan does not involve weighing or counting. Their approach to weight loss is based on a passion for helping you to achieve your weight loss

Moving House

Moving House The end is in sight – you have sold your house, found a new one and are just about to receive your moving date. Now comes the job that everybody dreads, the packing!

T

he biggest job when moving house can be the packing, especially if you are downsizing as you will need to look extra carefully at what you are going to take with you. But whether your new house is smaller or not you can take the opportunity to go through your belongings. The easiest part is to throw away anything you no longer want or need. Next, create two piles in each room. One pile should be good quality items you no longer require and these can be sent to a charity shop who will be grateful of the donation, not to mention a little feelgood factor for you. The rest is everything you want to keep and these are the things you will need to pack. Once you have sorted your belongings you can decide whether to pack your things yourself or speak to a removal firm who can pack for you. If you choose to pack your things yourself then make sure that you have enough boxes, insulation (such as bubble wrap, newspaper, tissue paper) and tape (masking tape, parcel tape). As you pack make a note on each filled box of which room they will need to go in at the new house as well as brief details of what is in the box to help you to find any items you might need early on after the move. You can get boxes from a removal firm even if you are not using them for packing which is a good idea as they have

“However you decide to pack and move it is always a good idea to pack a separate bag and box with the essentials you will need on your first night in your new home...”

boxes that are a little different to your run-of-the-mill boxes such as wardrobe boxes which contain a rail for ease of moving your clothes. Whether you are using a removal firm or not as soon as you have your moving date you need to organise the removal. If you are hiring a van yourself then call and reserve a van for your moving date. One of the biggest mistakes you can make here is to hire the wrong size van. Underestimating the size you will need could result in you having to make many more trips or even not getting the job done in time which could cause problems. If in doubt, speak to the hire company who will be able to advise you. Unless you don’t have much to move however, it is always best to use a removal company. When using professionals you will need to get in touch with a moving date as soon as you can. Have a good look at their insurance documents to make sure everything you are moving will be covered. If not you may need to make alternative arrangements for those items. If you want the removal firm to pack for you then let them know as they will need to build in extra time to do this. When you speak to a potential removal firm for the first time you will need to let them have the following information: Where you are based and the area you are moving to The date and the time you will need them How much you think you have to move Details of large items of furniture which will need moving However you decide to pack and move it is always a good idea to pack a separate bag and box with the essentials you will need on your first night in your new home to stop you having to search through boxes. As well as a change of clothes and your toiletries you might like to keep the kettle handy so you can have a cup of tea before the mammoth task of unpacking begins!

Autumn Recipes BBQs

Autumn Recipes As the weather starts to cool down at the end of September our cooking begins to turn towards home-made hearty comfort food to get us through the winter months. We take a look at one of our most famous exports, the Lincolnshire sausage, and our favourite cold-weather recipes

Sausage Rolls

Ingredients 

Method: Preheat the oven to 220C / Gas Mark 7. Sieve the flour and salt into a large bowl. Cut the butter and lard into cubes and rub them into the mixture until it resembles bread crumbs. Make a well in the centre and pour in the water, mixing until you have a firm dough. Cover with cling film and leave to rest for 2030 minutes. Turn out the dough. Knead it lightly and flatten out into a square. Use a rolling pin to roll out a rectangle, roughly 30cm long and 25cm wide. Trim the rough edges and cut lengthwise down the middle to make 2

smaller rectangles. Lay 3 sausages end to end down the middle of each half. Fold the dough over the sausages to make long rolls with the dough overlapping at the bottom. Slice each roll crosswise into as many pieces as you require (depending on whether you want large or small sausage rolls, anywhere between 3 and 9 per half ). Transfer to a baking tray and brush the top with egg for a glaze. Bake in the oven until golden brown.

Ingredients

225g plain flour, pinch of salt, 30g lard, 125ml iced water, 200g butter, 6 Lincolnshire Sausages, 1 egg for glazing.

Toad in the Hole

140g plain flour, 3 eggs, 300ml milk, pinch of salt, 4tbsp oil, 8 Lincolnshire sausages.

Method: Preheat the oven to 220c / Gas Mark 7. Whisk together the flour, eggs, milk and salt. Pour oil into a large tin and brush it over the sides. Pour the batter into the tin and place the sausages on top. Cook in the oven for 30-40 minutes

Sausage and Bean Casserole Method: Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas Mark 6. Heat the oil in a pan and brown the sausages. Add the veg, stir in the tomato puree and fry. Add the beans and the stock and simmer. Remove from the heat and transfer into a casserole dish. Place in the oven and bake for 25 – 30 minutes.

Ingredients 

1tbsp oil, 8 Lincolnshire sausages, 2 chopped sticks of celery, 2 chopped peppers, 2 chopped carrots, 1 chopped onion, 1tbsp tomato puree, 800g baked beans in tomato sauce, 200ml vegetable stock.

Bathrooms

How to plan your bathroom for the best results Today there is so much choice when it comes to bathrooms it is easy to forget your personal taste and end up with a bathroom that while it might be beautiful doesn’t quite fit with your lifestyle. We have some tips for the planning stages

I

t is always a good idea to begin by thinking about the function of your bathroom, and it’s not as simply as it sounds. What do you use it for the most, for example is it a family bathroom? Which do you use most, shower or bath? Do your treat your bathroom as somewhere to relax and unwind or is it purely functional? Thinking ahead to a potential remodel, consider how much space you have to play with. Making sure everything will fit will save you problems down the line!! Do you get ready in the bathroom in the mornings – if you put your make-up on in the bathroom would a double sink and mirror be handy? If you are a shower person would a shower room or wet room be more appropriate? Narrowing down your options before you really start will can save you hours once you begin shopping. Most people begin by buying their bathroom suite. Many stores that sell bathrooms will offer a free design service so you can see how your bathroom will look before you order. Generally people will buy a bath or shower, a sink and toilet initially. These tend to be from the same range to give a uniform look to the bathroom. If you’re choosing a bath then you have the choice from a huge range from your standard panelled bath right up to freestanding roll top baths and everything in between. Showers are similiarly bountiful when it comes to choice so take the time to think about what your favourite shower features are to help narrow the search!! For sinks and toilets you can now choose between floor and wallmounted which can alter the look of the bathroom considerably. Once you have chosen you can choose your taps which gives you another opportunity to stamp your personality on the room. From there it’s all about storage – cabinets, under sink storage and shelves all provide the solution. The flooring and the walls will give your bathroom its ‘feel’ – modern, traditional, functional. Whether you choose tiles or lino flooring needs to be waterproof and non-slip. Most people prefer to tile their bathroom walls today and you can take your pick from ceramics, stone, glass and mosaic. You can really have fun with textures. . Finally your lighting. When choosing lighting you must consider how close it will be to a water source before you make your selection. Electrically speaking, your bathroom is divided into zones and only certain types of light can go into these zones 28 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

“Many stores that sell bathrooms will offer a free design service so you can see how your bathroom will look before you order.”

(it is calculated based on how likely the lights are to come into contact with water or water spray). Before you purchase your lights speak with your electrician to ensure you are buying the correct ones to avoid delays in fitting. All you need to do then is arrange fitting – if the company you bought from does not offer a fitting service then you will need to find a fitter and an electrician. Finally, be prepared for some upheaval as there may be some time during fitting when you will not have a water supply and if refitting is a big job you may not have a bathroom for a while so be sure to make alternative arrangements!!

do love to visit Long Sutton. I have friends in Long Sutton and we have had many a good meal and catch-ups in the Granary!! When I’m there on business I always like to take the time to have a wander round Market Place. As an added bonus I’ve never found it a problem to park (which can be sometimes be a problem with villages that have busy centres) and it is always well looked after, whatever time of year. Just around the corner from Market Place sits Spire Dental . I was lucky enough to win a course of teeth whitening at a charity auction recently which prompted my visit and I hadn’t been there for too long before I realised that this small practice is up to big things… Spire offer a different type of dentistry – it certainly doesn’t have the feel of your average dental surgery when you walk in. Regardless of the reason for your visit they aim to make each visit as pleasant as possible and look at each patient as an individual, giving you the chance to have your say in the smile you have always wanted. Whether you are looking to maintain healthy teeth and gums or for cosmetic treatments to improve your smile and confidence they are able to advise and assist you. If you are wanting a practice for your usual checkups they offer ‘pay-as-you-go’ or monthly plans to help spread costs. Payment plans start from only £7.50 per month and include all your routine care. Additional benefits such as insurance and discounts are also included. We all want the best care possible for our families which is why Spire offer routine dental care to the under 12’s free of charge (a parent must also be registered).

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY

he Toyota Prius Plus looks a little sexier now it’s had a facelift. The Japanese auto maker has given the green people carrier a sharp new front end, with LED headlamps and LED rear light clusters. Meanwhile, inside, there’s now a multimedia touchscreen with DAB, a reversing camera and Bluetooth. On higher trimmed Excel and Excel Plus models, Toyota’s ‘Touch 2 with Go’ system adds navigation and connectivity functions. These versions of the Prius Plus also benefit from tech features that improve safety and contribute to smoother and easier driving. They feature Toyota’s Pre-Crash Safety system, which is designed to help you avoid a collision, or to reduce the consequences should a crash happen. Behind the wheel, the instrumentation is still as bizarre as the Prius’ exterior. The dashboard is a blend of all kinds of materials, with irregularly organised switchgear. None of that, apart from some cheap feeling plastics is bad, though – just different to the norm. And that’s kind of refreshing.

When you think ‘Prius’ – cool, rock and film stars who want to save the environment come to mind. But actually the Prius Plus is just as likely to be seen on the school run in suburban Britain as it is in Hollywood. There’s masses of headroom and the seven seater car’s third row of chairs is no worse than many. In other words, these extra seats are for kiddies only – not adults. No big deal there. With those two child friendly seats folded into the load floor, the resulting boot space is decent, albeit shallow. With all five seats folded down there’s a really practical long surface, with enough space for a trip to buy lots of tall furniture at IKEA, and other similar stores. In the middle row, each individual seat can glide forwards and backwards, and the outer ones tip forwards so your kids, or kids’ friends, can access the third tier. Under the bonnet, there’s a 1.8-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor. A battery pack provides the ‘green’ power, supported by an engine-driven generator when possible. The basic car will do an official 68.9mpg, when fitted with 16-inch

wheels, but of more interest is the CO2 output of 96g/km, meaning you won’t have to pay road tax in the UK – at least for now. On the move, the Prius Plus skates away in ghostly silence under electric power - then the petrol engine kicks in with a noticeable thrum when the pace picks up. That said; the car’s continuously variable transmission (CVT) automatically and seamlessly changes through the gear ratios, making driving effortless. The Toyota doesn’t exactly rock when it comes to handling – with noticeable lean through country lane corners and light steering at motorway speeds. However, it never feels unsafe –which is the least you should expect of a people carrier. For enthusiasts of low emission motoring who have gone on to have a family, then, short of pedal power, this is a great way to transport the rug-rats to school and further afield. The Toyota Prius Plus is a truly realistic motor, albeit not the most thrilling of people carrying machines on the market. But, for its green, yet powerful talents, this Toyota is a car many more British families are likely to take to their hearts. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |
