Back in February 1537 Henry VII officially declared February 14 to be St Valentine’s Day and the rest, as they say, is history. A little over 300 years later Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day, presenting his love with a heart shaped box of goodies. And if you are a pampered pooch it can be a good day for you too, with 3% of pet owners giving Valentine’s gifts to their pets. If Valentine’s Day isn’t your thing then you could be extreme and hop over to Finland – over there it is called Ystävänpäiva which translates as Friends Day so you could spend the day celebrating your friends. Whatever you are doing, enjoy! This issue we explore Motability, a scheme which helps people to exchange their mobility allowance to lease a car, scooter or powered wheelchair. If you claim mobility allowance then this might be something that can benefit you so is well worth a read. We are also pointing the spotlight on foot care and cosmetic dentistry so we are truly looking top to toe this month! Essential Wellbeing are working with international charity Look Good Feel Better to offer free monthly clinics helping with skin changes, eyelash and eyebrow loss. College Recognised in National Awards Beth Olechnowicz, were invited to a gala presentation dinner to receive their award. Judges praised the College for their understanding and recognition of the needs and interests of young people who rely on quality information when making extremely important decision about their futures. Andy said: “The competition featured many top colleges from all over the country we were delighted to be shortlisted. To be specifically recognised as highly commended for our prospectus was a great achievement”. “We’re all very proud and are already planning next year’s entry!”

Colleagues at New College Stamford have been recognised for captivating the attention of local students, beating off tough competition at a national awards ceremony. The college received a Highly Commended accolade for their Full Time Prospectus at the College Marketing Network’s FE First Annual Awards attended by some of the biggest colleges and sixth forms around the country. New Premises for Essential Well-being Essential Well-being have settled into their new premises and are looking forward to expanding their services in 2016. Back in December they left Vine Street and are now situated at 9 London Road, Spalding (PE11 2TA if you are visiting via SatNav!). The beautiful, spacious new surroundings were thoroughly explored during a reopening where guests were treated to a tour as well as a showcase of some of the treatments available.

Riverside improvements under way

Improving Spalding’s riverside area was top of the agenda at the inaugural meeting of a community group. Spalding town Councillors Gary Taylor and Jack McLean were joined by residents, councillors and Police Inspector Jo Reeves at the Riverside community forum held recently. The group aims to raise awareness of environmental issues facing the river Welland and has started work to help enhance the surrounding areas. During the meeting, it was agreed that new bins to sit alongside benches will be purchased and a trial period of bush and shrub growth will get under way. Removing graffiti was also discussed along with the prospect of introducing artwork on bridges over the river. The group will actively work on raising awareness about littering along the river following recent high profile incidents. Cllr McLean said: “As strong believers in this approach, it was excellent to see the meeting unfold and organisations working together. “We are looking ahead now to 2016 for art projects, community payback, new bins, graffiti removal, restoration works and an ever closer community.” Cllr Taylor said: “I am a strong believer of this multi-agency approach to tackling issues and getting results. “I hope to see more residents and local businesses joining us next year, as when we work together we can genuinely make a difference to our environment.” The next meeting of the group takes place on Friday, February 26 at the Pennygate Foundation in Spalding and members of the public are welcome to attend. Local Businesses invited to “Meet the District Council Buyers” Local businesses are being invited to attend a special event to find out more about how they could win contracts to provide services for South Holland District Council. The Meet the District Council Buyers event, to be held on 24th February, will give businesses a chance to speak to members of the council’s various teams about the diverse range of goods and services bought by South Holland. The event is open to all local businesses. The companies will have an opportunity to hear more about how South Holland selects suppliers before talking about the services they can provide and how they could support the council to deliver first class services to residents and businesses. The event will also provide an opportunity for networking with other local businesses.

Julie Kennealy, South Holland District Council’s Executive Director of Commercialisation, commented: “South Holland buys a vast range of goods and services on behalf of residents and businesses, as well as behind the scenes services which enable the council to operate”. Cllr Nick Worth, Portfolio holder for Commercialisation, said: “This event will provide local businesses an opportunity to find out more about the sort of contracts that South Holland offers and how they could become a supplier in the future. It also means our teams can find out more about the businesses that are out there which are offering new and exciting ideas, services, and ways of operating, which could help us further enhance our services and become more efficient and effective”.

When booking their place, businesses will be asked to identify their area of expertise so they can be matched with the most appropriate Council team. Service categories range from architects and financial services, to cleaning services, marketing materials, and security, so any business will be able to attend. The Meet the District Council Buyers event will take place at the South Holland Centre, 23 Market Place, Spalding, PE11 1SS on 24th February, from 4pm. Nick Worth, The Deputy Leader of South Holland District Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages Valentines Day is an important day in the annual calendar, not just for romantics, but is big business particularly for the flower and logistics industries that are prominent in the South Holland area. Growing flowers is a multi-million pound industry with South Holland companies importing and exporting flowers from around the world including the Netherlands, Colombia, Kenya, Israel, South Africa and Ecuador to name a few. Providing good transport links to the Country’s ports and airports is therefore vital for our businesses and is a major part of Lincolnshire’s Devolution proposal, along with skills such as those in logistics that are required by our bigger businesses, for devolved government in Lincolnshire. All Councils in Greater Lincolnshire have now agreed ( at the time of writing), to the principles of a combined authority and to set up a shadow board to be known as the Greater Lincolnshire Leadership Board to develop a fit for purpose devolution document, pending confirmation from the government that the submission is to be negotiated to a detailed deal. The arrangements for devolved power are becoming clearer and will certainly involve a new tier of government, ‘ a combined authority’, with an elected Mayor who will be accountable to central government. The combined authority will consist of the Leaders of the Districts, County and Unitary Authorities of Greater Lincolnshire plus a representative of the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise

Partnership. This will require a more loving and trusting relationship between all the authorities than there is at times at the moment, but I don’t see them going as far as sending each other Valentines cards! The elected Mayor will only be able to make decisions providing he or she has the support of the majority of the leaders and worth noting that if one or two councils’ pull out of the deal, it can still go ahead. The Cities and Local Government Devolution Bill also allows for Councils to join whichever combined authority they want, ( some proposals are cross County and Regional borders), sparking some fear about the future of historical county areas. So still a huge amount of work to be done on the detail and many difficult decisions to be taken over the next year, but there is no doubt that the final deal, if we get that far, will have the potential to provide huge economic benefits for the South Holland area and I suspect further down the line implications for the future reorganisation of local government as well. Finally a reminder that just when you thought there were no elections this year – there are elections for the Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner in May, more details later, but I am sure you will soon have candidates coming to our towns and villages to tell you where they stand on issues of policing policy,police budgets, community safety and anti-social behaviour. Dealing with relationship break-ups Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day rolls around each year bringing with it a whole host of different feelings. It’s a lovely idea to have a whole day especially for the celebration of love, but if you’re in a bad place in your relationship, you might not agree ❱ BY DEBRA LEE Last month divorce lawyers will have had their busiest time of the year after the long Christmas holiday took its toll on thousands of relationships. For many unhappy partners financial worries or abuse could be the last straw and grounds for a split. Relationship break-ups can be incredibly stressful for any couple, but dealing with the situation sensitively is all the more important when children are involved. This month Sarah, an adviser with local Charity, Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire responds to a client who contacted them about his relationship problem. : My relationship with my partner has broken down and we have two small children. I’m really worried that if this goes to court the judge will favour the children’s mother over me as their father for residence decisions, and that I won’t be able to afford a lawyer who can make sure that I keep my children living with me. What should I do? It is not always possible, but the best option is for you to come to an agreement with your partner about the care of your children. Where this doesn’t resolve the issue, the next step is to get the help of a local family mediation service. Decisions made with this service are not automatically legally binding but it can be very helpful if you can use the opportunity to avoid the costly and sometimes acrimonious court system. It is also necessary to attempt mediation before taking the dispute to court. Unmarried fathers don’t automatically have a right to a say in their child’s future, even though they may be financially supporting them. This will depend on whether they have

If you were named on your child’s birth certificate since 2003, you’ll automatically have parental responsibility. But don’t worry if you haven’t got it this way – there are other ways you can get it, including asking to the court for an order. If you are still can’t agree about arrangements for your children, you may have to consider going to court as a last resort. But remember, this will cost you a lot of money and may take a long time. If you want the children to live with you, you’ll need to apply for a residence order. If the children will be living with their mother, you’ll need to apply

for a contact order. This will set out the kind of contact you’ll have with your children, for example how often you can see them or take them away on holiday. It can be a good idea to apply to the court for both a contact order and a parental responsibility order at the same time, if you haven’t already got parental responsibility. Legal aid is not available for the court proceedings of private family law cases. However you may be able to get legal aid to pay for help solving your dispute out of court, through a family mediation service, so this can be the ideal way to make arrangements for your children. Family mediation is an alternative to solicitors negotiating for you but not a substitute for legal advice. You will be encouraged to consult a solicitor during the mediation process to advise you on the personal consequences of your decisions. At the end of mediation, the decisions you have reached can be used as the basis for a divorce settlement, or a legal separation agreement. You can find out more about the availability of legal aid for family mediation at www. familymediationhelpline.co.uk, or on the National Family Mediation website at www. nfm.org.uk. . If you are experiencing relationship problems or have experienced any instances of domestic abuse, Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire staff and volunteers are able to provide confidential advice and support. Cohabitation Agreements A sharp increase in the number of cohabiting couples over the past 20 years has led to a rise in complex and often costly legal disputes when couples break up. Despite what many believe, cohabiting couples do not have the same legal protection as married couples. It is a popular misconception that there is such a status as that of a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;common-law spouseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. If a cohabiting relationship breaks down there is very little protection for the weaker party, typically the woman, who often has children. As a result, some cohabiting families can find themselves facing real difficulties. In England and Wales, when married couples divorce or civil partners break up, both parties can claim a share of the matrimonial assets to include property, pensions and maintenance and, indeed, the Court has relatively wide discretion when deciding upon a fair division of the assets.

Cohabiting couples have no such rights. When cohabiting couples jointly own their family home, the property will automatically be divided 50:50, even when one party has contributed more (unless the parties have signed a Deed of Trust), and it can be extremely costly to dispute that position. If one party owns the home in his/her sole name then the other party has no rights

unless they can trace their own money into the property which is rarely easy to do. Again, in order to challenge the legal position, it is a very costly exercise. As the law stands, the only solution for cohabiting couples who want legal protection should they split up is to either marry, enter a civil partnership or enter into a Cohabitation Agreement. A Cohabitation Agreement is contractually binding, if properly effected, and if one party were to renege on the Agreement the Court would enforce the contract against the reneging party. However, in practice, parties tend to abide by the Cohabitation Agreement once it has been entered into. This may not be your idea of romance, but signing a contract whilst still in love is certainly more romantic than the scenes of all out warfare that often take place before a Court after a relationship breaks down.

Weston Hills CofE Primary School It may be hard to believe, but Weston Hills School had been in the current building for 10 years last term! We thought it would be appropriate to celebrate decided to combine

this with the official opening of our wonderful new library. We held a whole school poetry week with opportunities for parents to come into school and work

with their children writing some poems and illustrating them. Chris White, performance poet and illustrator, visited the school to kick start the week. Class 4 had a very successful trip to the National Space Centre in Leicester, as did Class 3 who went to Peterborough Museum taking part in a Roman Workshop. Both were linked to their class topics.Year 5&6 children went on the annual residential trip to Aylmerton Field Study Centre. Wonderful weather and activities over a fantastic weekend! Flu inoculations will be taking place for Year 1 and 2 children shortly. This is a new NHS initiative. We have anti-bullying week coming up and will be holding assemblies and watching videos – these will be run by our Head of Pastoral Care, Sally Alexander. December saw Bikeability Week for children in Year 6.

Ayscoughfee Hall School Children at Ayscoughfee Hall School enjoyed a successful and very busy run up to their Christmas holidays. Following their successful win in the Spalding School’s Choir Competition, the choir members performed again at St. John’s Church, at Baytree Garden Centre and at Georgian Court. The whole school enjoyed their parties and Christmas lunch together whilst the Infants performed their nativity plays to the older children and a very appreciative audience of family and friends. The Juniors also visited the pantomime at the South Holland Centre. Year 5 enjoyed a Tudor Christmas at Burghley House and Year 6 went to Swan Street Baptist Church to experience ‘Christmas Unwrapped’. The children were delighted to continue their support for Agape Food Bank, with a collection of Christmas food, toys and books which some of the older children helped to deliver. The term ended with the traditional Christmas service at Broad Street Methodist Church. There was still time…and energy...left for sport though! The Under 9 Rugby team were winners of their area in the Independent Schools Tournament at Grantham, and in hockey the school’s ‘A’ team finished top of their league with the ‘B’ team second in theirs. The Year 3 and 4 football team (wearing a brand new strip!) won their local school’s football tournament, with the older boys losing in the final to Thurlby. David Callow returned to education and studied the Foundation Degree, David said, “The high quality teaching at Boston College gave me the confidence to progress further to where I am today, on a Master’s Degree that will see me qualify as a Social Worker in the near future.” Steve Ross studied the Foundation Degree Learning Support at Boston College and progressed onto the BA (Hons) Primary with QTS at Bishop Grosseteste University. He is now a qualified Teacher. Steve said, “If I could offer advice to anyone pursuing a career in teaching, I would recommend the Foundation Degree at Boston College. You receive the necessary skills, both practically and academically, that you can use and apply within your everyday role in the school.” In 2014/2015, 100% of Apprentices gained employment with the employer they had trained with. Former Apprentice, Sam Hughes said, “My Apprenticeship has enabled me to work towards a career in a school for children with special needs. Responsible Pet Ownership Welcoming a pet into your family is a big step, you’re responsible for them legally, financially and morally, but it’s not hard to be a responsible pet owner. ¬ust follow these steps: Obey the law It’s illegal to cause unnecessary suffering to an animal through cruelty or neglect, so it’s important to ensure you understand your pet’s needs. Alongside this there are some specific points of law relating to dogs: • You can be prosecuted, jailed and your dog destroyed if it is out of control. Take your dog to training classes to make sure you can control them at all times. • You must also pick up poo. It’s not top of a dog owner’s wish list, but it must be done! Use a poop-scoop if it makes you feel unwell.

These are an excellent life-long way to ensure you’re reunited with your pet should they get lost. Dogs must be micro-chipped by law from April 2016 but cats, rabbits, and most other pets can be chipped too. Don’t forget to notify your chip supplier if you move house.

Every pet must be fed according to their specific needs. Rabbits need more than carrots! You shouldn’t give any pet human food particularly not chocolate which can be fatal.

The floor isn’t enough! Reptiles can be tricky because they need heat and will die without it. Again, come and ask us if you need help. A pet should enrich your life. If you follow these responsible pet owner guidelines you’ll have years of happy companionship to come.

Regular worming and flea treatment is a must. Worms can affect your health as well as making your pet underweight and miserable. Fleas will drive them crazy and will infest your house all year round. Vaccinations can save your pet from deadly diseases. Speak to a vet about what you need for your pet. Your vet may have a payment plant to help you spread the cost. Think about pet insurance too - it can save you from a large unexpected vet bills.

Exercise Pets need exercise everyday otherwise behavioural issues may occur. Walk your dog every day, and provide toys and stimulation for all other pets.

Coping with Cancer Having to face cancer can take all that you have got and for women, changes in your appearance can make the process that much harder. Thankfully there are charities on hand that are here to help

here are many groups available to help you when it comes to dealing with cancer. From diagnosis to treatment, to recovery, dealing with finances and day to day issues and everything in between there is information and support available should you feel you need it. Everyone approaches their cancer journey differently and it’s not a “one size fits all” when it comes to the help you might need. Unfortunately the external effects of cancer treatment can be difficult to deal with from an emotional perspective at a time when thinking positively can help. Whether you are having chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy or targeted therapies you could notice a change in your hair skin and nails. Many people associate cancer treatments with losing your hair and with many types of chemotherapy this is the case. People choose to deal with it in different ways. Some, in anticipation of their treatment beginning, choose to shave their heads so they don’t have to watch their hair fall out. Others wait to see what happens while some embrace it and cope well with the experience. Either way hair loss can be distressing, especially if you are the kind of person who takes great pride in doing their hair every day. Whether you feel you are coping well during Cancer or would like some support it is important to remember you are not alone, there are many organisations and charities out there who are able to help you and members of your family.

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. Taking Care of your Feet Looking after our feet is so important as any little problems can soon turn into big problems. We look at some common problems and what you can do to avoid them

egularly seeing a foot care professional will enable you to stay on top of any chronic problems you might have. There are some conditions you can manage yourself but if in doubt book yourself an appointment and be seen by a specialist! From ingrowing toenails to bunions to Athletes Foot, it might seem like there is always something lurking ready to attack our feet but some basic care can help control conditions or avoid them all together. One of the most common fungal infections is Athletes Foot. When your feet are regularly moist or wet (for example if you exercise a lot, hence the name) then the fungus finds conditions perfect for spreading. As well as causing itching and peeling skin the infection can spread to the toenails and cause thickening and yellowing of the nail. To help your feet stay healthy make sure that after you shower you take the time to ensure your feet are completely dry. You can also alternate your footwear to give each pair of shoes / trainers time to completely dry out before you put them back on again. When you hear the word “Verruca” it’s easy to think of childhood and swimming pools! But they can affect us at any age. Verrucae are warts which typically occur on the soles of the feet. The virus which causes verrucae are highly contagious - so much so that you can contract them from walking across the same floor as someone who already has them, hence the prevalence in swimming and communal areas. Wearing flip flops in communal areas and not sharing

towels is a good start in avoiding them. There are overthe-counter treatments available if you get a verucca but if it lasts a while then a foot care specialist will need to get involved. If you suffer from Diabetes your feet can suffer as a result. One of the most common symptoms is loss of sensation from the toes upwards. Blood flow to the feet can be reduced and as such it is harder to detect when you have injured your feet and also, because of this reduced flow, any injuries will take longer to heal which increases the risk of infection. For this reason everyone with Diabetes should regularly see a foot care professional as they will be able to spot any potential problems and either treat them or take preventative action so that a problem does not develop. Circulation and sensation will also be checked. Making sure you wear comfortable fitting shoes and socks is helpful in keeping your feet healthy. The consequences of leaving your feet unchecked if you have Diabetes can be very serious so developing good habits early on will help keep your feet healthy for as long as possible.

eing disabled can sometimes mean it can be very difficult to get around. It can turn the simplest of jobs such as a trip to the supermarket into something complicated and uncomfortable. The Motability Scheme helps disabled people exchange part or all of their mobility allowance for a vehicle, scooter or powered wheelchair. If a car would make a huge difference to how you live your life then Motability will be able to help. The best part is that to qualify you don’t need to drive yourself as you can nominate a member of your family, a carer or a friend to drive on your behalf. If you want to join the scheme you will need to meet some eligibility requirements. If you receive one of the following you could be eligible: - Higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) - Enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) - War Pensioners mobility supplement - Armed Forces Independence Payment Once you are in the scheme you will find a huge range of cars to choose from which will be paid for from either part or all of your mobility payment. Providing you remain eligible you will be able to choose a new car every 3 years which includes regular servicing, RAC cover, car tax, replacement tyres, window and windscreen repair and many other added extras. Of the cars available over 500 require no advance payment. Over 150 cars in the scheme cost less that the allowance. If you are happy to part with all of the allowance it will increase your choice by 350 vehicles. If you already have a privately owned car you would like to trade in or sell it or have a lump

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY, MOTORING JOURNALIST he most up-todate Corsa VXR from Vauxhall is stimulating to look at and rousing to

drive. The beefy stance, the eccentrically fat alloy wheels and the hiphugging sports seats aren’t exactly understated. And, if for some reason you’ve had a ‘forgetful moment’ and need reminding further that you’re not in any ‘ordinary’ Corsa, don’t worry, because the letters ‘V.X.R’ are pretty prominent. So, in terms of aesthetics, the Corsa has done a good job of ‘bigging itself up’ before even going anywhere – but does it deliver on the move? The response to that is a somewhat schizophrenic one: yes, and no. You see, whilst the Corsa VXR does the 0-62mph sprint in just 6.5 seconds – faster than the Fiesta ST, Peugeot 208 GTI and the Renaultsport Clio 200, the front wheels sometimes find it hard to command the clout. This means when you hit the gas hard there’s a lot of torque-steer and the steering wheel can almost wrench itself free from your clasp. But this makes the Corsa entertaining – in a demanding sort of way. After all, the 143mph

model is a pure-bred from Vauxhall’s hot-hatch stable, and highly strung beasts need to be kept in check. On the straights, the mini motor with its mighty engine certainly attracts looks, and the deep grumble, building up to a turbo whistle, turns heads. But through the twisty bits is where you will grin like a Cheshire cat. This is because, Vauxhall has worked closely with dampersupplier, Koni, to develop a new technology, known as Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) for the new Corsa VXR. FSD allows damping forces to adapt to the car’s movements, ensuring that body control is maintained when the car is driven fast, but ride quality is optimised at lower speeds. The system is an entirely mechanical solution and does not require any electronic components such as sensors, cables or engine control units. Into the bargain, the car’s ride height has been lowered by 10mm all round. There’s also a new rear axle with new geometry for a modified roll rate. In combination with a new torsion profile rod, this results in improved responsiveness compared with the former model. The Corsa VXR’s spring rates, antiroll bars, rear-axle bearing bushes

are also new or revised. What’s more, for the first time, Vauxhall is offering a two-stage switchable electronic stability programme (ESP) and traction control (TC) with the Corsa VXR. In Competition Mode the traction control is inactive, while the ESP is relaxed to allow less intervention. For track use, the ESP can be fully disabled. And when it comes to scrubbing off speed – the Corsa VXR has it covered. Vauxhall and Brembo have worked hard to develop a braking system which will bring a very wild car to a swift stop. There’s no doubt about it, this is a white-knuckle car to drive, and one that will get you lots of attention. Perhaps too much, judging from the amount of boy racers determined to ‘take me on’ every time I wanted to nip to the supermarket. Fine; but if I wanted to be noticed by spotty 18 year olds wearing baseball caps back to front then I’d have bought an old Nova GTE with a fake turbo whistler rammed up the tailpipe. No, for me, the Corsa VXR isn’t quite sophisticated enough – but at over £18,000 on the road, you’ll need to have a relatively respectable job to manage to pay for a brand new one.
