Welcome

to the February issue Back in February 1537 Henry VII officially declared February 14 to be St Valentine’s Day and the rest, as they say, is history. A little over 300 years later Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day, presenting his love with a heart shaped box of goodies. And if you are a pampered pooch it can be a good day for you too, with 3% of pet owners giving Valentine’s gifts to their pets. If Valentine’s Day isn’t your thing then you could be extreme and hop over to Finland – over there it is called Ystävänpäiva which translates as Friends Day so you could spend the day celebrating your friends. Whatever you are doing, enjoy! This issue we explore Motability, a scheme which helps people to exchange their mobility allowance to lease a car, scooter or powered wheelchair. If you claim mobility allowance then this might be something that can benefit you so is well worth a read. We are also pointing the spotlight on foot care and cosmetic dentistry so we are truly looking top to toe this month! Also, we catch up with County Care. This innovative provider of support for people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health has recently started up in Boston and the sheer amount of things they have already been up to is astonishing. Enjoy the issue.

Jean signs up for flood warnings and wins £100 cash The first lucky Floodline Lottery winner has been drawn from the hat. Jean Stevenson, of Almond Walk, Boston, signed up for the Environment Agency flood alerts through the Boston Borough Council promotion and earned herself £100 cash to spend before Christmas. Jean escaped flooding at her home in 2013, but had friends who were flooded in Boston. She said: “They had four feet of water through. One of my friend’s sons arrived to help his mum and his car was flooded.” Jean was flooded in the 1953 floods when she lived in Pulvertoft Lane. “It came up to the windows then,” she said. She received her £100 cash from December’s Floodline Lottery sponsor Gravitas (International) Ltd. Daniel Rosenberg, Operations Director for Gravitas International Ltd, took a detour from the company’s HQ in Cheshire to present Jean with her winnings on his way to help out with flooding in Cumbria. He said: “Anyone who has suffered, and continues to suffer, the utter devastation that flooding can cause would never wish to have that experience again. Gravitas is happy to support this initiative so that more are aware of a free service which gives warnings of imminent risk of flooding. This means that people at risk have time to do whatever is necessary to protect themselves, their families and their property.” The Floodline Lottery aims to encourage more to sign up for the Environment Agency warnings. Thanks to generous sponsors a number of £100 cash prizes will be awarded in the Floodline Signup Lottery. To stand a chance of winning a future £100 cash prize, all you have to do is complete the coupon so that we can register you with the EA’s Floodline Warnings Direct. Send to: Floodline Lottery, Communications, Boston Borough Council, Municipal Buildings, West Street, Boston, Lincolnshire, PE21 8QR. You can also email your details by filling in the coupon at www. boston.gov.uk/floodlinelottery Appeal for information A local man has appealed for information in tracing some people from his family’s past. Ray Gould is looking for the burial location or any next of kin for a Mr Joseph Proctor and a Mrs Elizabeth Proctor (nee Dalton) from Hubberts Bridge.

Ray’s grandmother was evacuated during the Second World War and stayed with a Mr & Mrs Proctor of Hubberts Bridge in 1942. He has a letter from Mrs Proctor from 1944 in response to his grandmother’s news that she was about to be married. Ray says “I would love to pay respects to the people who were so kind to my grandmother and great grandmother during the war. The letter mentions names of other people in the area at the time such as Dalton’s Butchers shop”. Ray does know that Mr Proctor died 1962 Boston District and Mrs Proctor died 1957. They are not in Boston Cemetery or Hubbert’s Bridge church yard and I have been told they are not in the Brothertoft parish records. If you are able to help please drop us an email to editor@simplyboston.co.uk or give us a call on 0845 6769295.

Historic Building Grants You can’t fix alterations overnight which have occurred over decades. But slowly and steadily changing attitudes are being reflected in improvements to town centre shops in Boston. In many cases changes which appeared to be modern and progressive in the 1960s are being undone and frontages returned to a more traditional and pleasing appearance. High-quality work of this nature can be expensive, so help is at hand in the shape of grants under Boston’s PSiCA project (Partnership Schemes in Conservation Areas). The scheme is a partnership between Historic England and Boston Borough Council and offers grants to owners or leaseholders of historic buildings with shop fronts within the Market Place Conservation Area. The aim is to make the most of the town centre’s special architectural and historic character helping improve the appearance of the town centre, making it more attractive to visitors and driving BEFORE economic regeneration.

The main focus is on the Market Place but some areas on the High Street, Bridge Street, Red Lion Street, West Street and Wormgate are included. The grant can help towards repairs to buildings and reinstatement of historic features and shop fronts. Grant contributions can be up to 50 per cent of highquality repair costs and 90 per cent of reinstatement costs. So far eight properties in Boston have already benefited from the scheme, which began in 2012, including two in Church Street and most recently the Butterfly Hospice shop in the Market Place. The latest to undergo repairs, external decoration and refurbishment of the interior is the former Edinburgh Woollen Mill shop. To find out more please contact Project Conservation Officer Kelly Appleton on 01205 314339 or email AFTER kelly.appleton@boston.gov.uk

If you would like to contact Peter with a specific question, please email info@simplyboston.co.uk

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston As we were all making final preparations for lovely Christmas and New Year celebrations I am sure most had their thoughts turned to the plight and misery of those afflicted by flooding. Two years ago it was the turn of thousands in Boston. Scenes on the TV of flooding this year in Cumbria must have brought back memories of those dark days. We know from bitter experience that there is no quick fix after flooding. In Boston it has taken two full years and millions of pounds for many to return to anything like normal. The flood waters in Cumbria hung around. In Boston on the stormy night of December 5, 2013, it was quick and vicious. By the next day much of the tidal flood water had gone from the streets. But the damage inside homes and businesses which had been done in those fleeting hours would take months and months to put right. So the last thing we need now is anything which puts at risk the construction of Boston’s flood protection barrier in the quickest time possible. Yes, in an ideal world, with endless finance, we would have all the bells and whistles. But the priority, now and here and in these cash-strapped times, is whatever we can get which works to protect against flooding as soon as we can get it. I have been disturbed to read that some local unelected politicians have gone into print to ask, at this late stage, for an in-depth public inquiry into the finer detail of the barrier project. I have every confidence in the professionals from the Environment Agency who tell us that the £92.3 million tidal flood alleviation barrier is the best it can be for Boston at this time; an assurance sought by our MP from ministers and an assurance given. Since the 2013 flood the project, which is massively complex, has been fast tracked and is on target to be completed by December 2019. It may not now include all the extras, such as keeping the water level in The Haven through town constant, but I think that would be cold comfort for anyone whose home is flooded after December 2019 because the barrier has not been built because of delays caused by a public inquiry. Flood protection, or a pretty river scene? I know which I’d sooner have. This is not to say that those bells and

whistles cannot be provided at some later stage, and I will do my best for Boston, as I have always done. But we have to be realistic about the situation we are in today. The priority of the barrier had always been, and is now even more so, all about flood protection. The facts are that the barrier will provide flood protection to 20,000 properties over the next 100 years in Boston. The barrier, had it been in position in 2013 would have prevented that flood. The barrier will give among the best protection from tidal flooding of anywhere in the country. Low spots in the Haven banks will be raised to afford more protection. Flooding can happen anytime. God forbid that we should have a repeat of 2013 before 2019. God forbid that we should have a repeat in 2019 and the barrier is not in place because of avoidable delays. Nature will not wait for politicians. And we shouldn’t wait a second longer than is necessary for flood protection for Bostonians. I am sure those poor people in Cumbria would agree. Those who know me will know that I’m a bit of a traditionalist – plain meat and two veg for me. At Christmas I enjoyed turkey with all the trimmings (the best of Lincolnshire veg) and Christmas pud to follow. But I do admire those adventurous enough to try things which are new and different. A sushi bar in Boston? Yes, and every good luck to them. It will be a real collision of ancient and modern (well, OK, traditional and not so traditional – sushi, Japanese cuisine, has been around for centuries) when Pescod Hall becomes home to Boston’s first sushi bar. It will also have a tea room; now that IS traditional. Pescod Hall dates back to the 15th century. It is perhaps better known in more modern times for being the timber-framed brick building which was moved in 2003 as an entire complete construction from its original site on the back of a giant low-loader to make room for construction of parts of Pescod Square Shopping Centre. Sadly it has stood empty and unused for the best part of the past two years, so it is great news to hear it is to be open to paying customers again and will create around ten new jobs. I may pop in for a cuppa, but I am unlikely to try sushi. Each to their own, and I am sure there are plenty of people with more adventurous palates than my own who will enjoy this first for Boston.

Advice

Dealing with relationship break-ups Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day rolls around each year bringing with it a whole host of different feelings. It’s a lovely idea to have a whole day especially for the celebration of love, but if you’re in a bad place in your relationship, you might not agree ❱ BY DEBRA LEE Last month divorce lawyers will have had their busiest time of the year after the long Christmas holiday took its toll on thousands of relationships. For many unhappy partners financial worries or abuse could be the last straw and grounds for a split. Relationship break-ups can be incredibly stressful for any couple, but dealing with the situation sensitively is all the more important when children are involved. This month Sarah, an adviser with local Charity, Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire responds to a client who contacted them about his relationship problem. : My relationship with my partner has broken down and we have two small children. I’m really worried that if this goes to court the judge will favour the children’s mother over me as their father for residence decisions, and that I won’t be able to afford a lawyer who can make sure that I keep my children living with me. What should I do? It is not always possible, but the best option is for you to come to an agreement with your partner about the care of your children. Where this doesn’t resolve the issue, the next step is to get the help of a local family mediation service. Decisions made with this service are not automatically legally binding but it can be very helpful if you can use the opportunity to avoid the costly and sometimes acrimonious court system. It is also necessary to attempt mediation before taking the dispute to court. Unmarried fathers don’t automatically have a right to a say in their child’s future, even though they may be financially supporting them. This will depend on whether they have

“It is not always possible, but the best option is for you to come to an agreement with your partner about the care of your children.” parental responsibility for their child. If you were named on your child’s birth certificate since 2003, you’ll automatically have parental responsibility. But don’t worry if you haven’t got it this way – there are other ways you can get it, including asking to the court for an order. If you are still can’t agree about arrangements for your children, you may have to consider going to court as a last resort. But remember, this will cost you a lot of money and may take a long time. If you want the children to live with you, you’ll need to apply for a residence order. If the children will be living with their mother, you’ll need to apply

for a contact order. This will set out the kind of contact you’ll have with your children, for example how often you can see them or take them away on holiday. It can be a good idea to apply to the court for both a contact order and a parental responsibility order at the same time, if you haven’t already got parental responsibility. Legal aid is not available for the court proceedings of private family law cases. However you may be able to get legal aid to pay for help solving your dispute out of court, through a family mediation service, so this can be the ideal way to make arrangements for your children. Family mediation is an alternative to solicitors negotiating for you but not a substitute for legal advice. You will be encouraged to consult a solicitor during the mediation process to advise you on the personal consequences of your decisions. At the end of mediation, the decisions you have reached can be used as the basis for a divorce settlement, or a legal separation agreement. You can find out more about the availability of legal aid for family mediation at www. familymediationhelpline.co.uk, or on the National Family Mediation website at www. nfm.org.uk. . If you are experiencing relationship problems or have experienced any instances of domestic abuse, Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire staff and volunteers are able to provide confidential advice and support. For further help you should consult an experienced adviser, which you can do for free at a Citizens Advice office or online at https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ relationships/

Advertorial

Taxing times ahead for residential landlords

F

rom 6 April 2017 the government are to introduce a significant change to the taxation of private landlords which will increase the tax burden for many landlords financing their rental portfolios with borrowings. Under the current scheme of taxation for landlords, any interest on borrowings secured to purchase or enhance rental properties is allowed as a deduction against the taxable income from those rental properties. Effectively, therefore, any loan interest attracts tax relief at the tax payer’s effective rate of tax, so a higher rate taxpayer for example would receive relief at their 40% rate of tax. From 2020 loan interest will only attract tax relief at the basic rate of income tax of 20%, irrespective of whether the taxpayer pays tax at 20%, 40% or 45%. There will therefore be no tax effect for basic rate taxpayers as they already receive tax relief

at the basic rate, but the effect on higher and additional rate taxpayers will be very noticeable. Due to the mechanics of the changes, there are situations where the additional tax charge can be even worse. Where an individual earns income in excess of £100,000 their personal allowance is gradually reduced to zero. The way in which the restriction is to apply could see an individual’s taxable income exceed £100,000 such that their personal allowance is abated. Similarly, where an individual (or their spouse/partner) claims child benefit, the changes could see their taxable income increase to over £50,000 such

that they incur a high income child benefit charge. These extra liabilities may arise despite the fact that no additional income is being received. Given that some properties may have significant chargeable gains, there may not even be an easy route out of the position if properties have been remortgaged following recent house price increases.

If you think you are likely to be affected by these changes, it’s better to take action sooner rather than later. To see what can be done to plan for the future call Matt Herd on 01205 310250.

Library News

By Boston library staff, Boston Library

What’s on at Boston Library in February

Adult choice The Chess Men by Peter May Set on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, this novel is the third in the trilogy featuring Fin MacLeod. In this episode Fin has retired from the Police Service and returns to his roots on Lewis to investigate a spate of game poaching as head of security on a privately owned estate. As the story unfolds, Fin discovers that events from his past weren’t all what they seemed and it leads him to question his own memories and relationships. Although this is the third in the trilogy, I read this first and didn’t feel I was missing anything for all that. What this book did however, was make me reserve the earlier novels because once this one was finished, I wanted to read those too. May’s descriptions of the weather and scenery are excellent at conjuring up the mood of Lewis and set the scene for this gripping tale.

Junior choice Devil You Know by Cathy McPhail This has been on my request list for a while as Cathy McPhail is one of the best writers out there. Even Julia Donaldson agrees that anything by her is unputdownable. Recently arrived on a Glasgow council estate, Logan is grateful to have made any friends at all. But will his best friend Baz be there when he really needs him? This is stand-out teen thriller with a sensational twist.

School News

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk

Bicker Preparatory School Before Christmas our Foundation Stage children entertained parents, friends and relatives with a delightful production of ‘The Hoity Toity Angels’. Children enjoyed telling the story of three rather boastful angels, who eventually learn the error of their ways! This year donations from our audiences raised money for two important charities, Dementia U.K. and Diabetes U.K. Meanwhile the Upper School children put on three performances of the Musicline production of ‘Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits’. The children chose the pantomime for its exciting songs and dances, pantomime humour and challenging script. Again, after each performance collections were made towards this year’s chosen charities, Dementia UK and Diabetes UK. Head Teacher Mrs Julie Miles said ‘ Some of the children had as many as eighty lines to learn. They worked very hard and enjoyed every minute. We are extremely proud of them’

Butterwick Primary School A massive well done to the girls at Butterwick Primary School who played in the annual girls’ football tournament at Kirton Middlecott School in December. The team was a credit to the school and played well throughout the day, winning every game they played in both their group games and then the knockout stages. They went on to win a very close, even game in the final, beating Carlton Road Primary in extra time by 1 goal to nil. The girls will now go on to represent both Butterwick Primary School and the Boston area schools as the winners of our area tournament at the county finals at Sleaford in February.

Teaching and Early Years with Boston College training for amazing careers!

Providing real work experience and qualifications up to university level in Teaching and Early Years, with proven student employment rates

B

“The high quality teaching at Boston College gave me the confidence to progress further to where I am today, on a Master’s Degree that will see me qualify as a Social Worker in the near future.”

oston College is an established provider of education and training with over 50 years’ experience, and its success rates across the whole curriculum have recently ranked it as Lincolnshire’s Top Performing College by the Skills Funding Agency. Whether you want to work in schools or early years there are many learning routes available ranging from level 1, 2 and 3 courses to Apprenticeships, right through to Foundation Degrees – providing both school leavers and adult learners the opportunity to become successfully qualified up to university level. Boston College Teacher Education, Early Years and Schools Department offers 11 Early Years courses and 8 different Teaching courses – all of which reflect the skills and knowledge students need to gain employment. Previous student, Leanne Boriel said, “Since leaving college I have gone on to gain full-time employment in a local Nursery where I have received one promotion, and am currently in the process of being considered for a Head of Department role.” The highly qualified, industry experienced Lecturers and Assessors at Boston College support students with their expertise to ensure that they leave with amazing careers ahead of them. Lecturers are not only all qualified to Degree level, and some to Masters level, but have all worked within an early years or school setting, so are able to share extensive knowledge and experience with their students. Andrea Wilson experienced this, and after completing her qualification she had a job interview at the school she volunteered at, and secured what she described as, “a fantastic job”. Working in partnership with Bishop Grosseteste University, Boston College offers Foundation Degrees in Early Childhood or Learning Support and has previously seen students secure highly sought after places to

complete their Degree at BGU. 100% of students studying on the Foundation Degree Learning Support in 2014/2015 gained their qualification, and the vast majority then progressed onto Bishop Grosseteste University. David Callow returned to education and studied the Foundation Degree, David said, “The high quality teaching at Boston College gave me the confidence to progress further to where I am today, on a Master’s Degree that will see me qualify as a Social Worker in the near future.” Steve Ross studied the Foundation Degree Learning Support at Boston College and progressed onto the BA (Hons) Primary with QTS at Bishop Grosseteste University. He is now a qualified Teacher. Steve said, “If I could offer advice to anyone pursuing a career in teaching, I would recommend the Foundation Degree at Boston College. You receive the necessary skills, both practically and academically, that you can use and apply within your everyday role in the school.” In 2014/2015, 100% of Apprentices gained employment with the employer they had trained with. Former Apprentice, Sam Hughes said, “My Apprenticeship has enabled me to work towards a career in a school for children with special needs. This opportunity has opened my eyes to career possibilities I had never considered.” The department is currently supporting students in 54 early years settings and 57 schools, working with employers throughout Lincolnshire including Boston, Sleaford, Spalding, Skegness and Horncastle. Daran Bland, Executive Head Teacher of The Priory and Garth Schools said, “The Apprenticeship at Boston College has allowed several students to train within our federation and develop their future careers in education. The knowledge and skills they develop in college alongside their practical experience in the workplace has produced a valuable partnership that has resulted in excellent practitioners who have since been employed.” With courses available in Boston, Spalding and Skegness, and flexible start times within the year it has never been easier to get started! For more information visit www.boston.ac.uk, call 01205 313218 or pop along to one of the Open Evenings - Spalding 2nd February or Boston 11th February where you can also find out about Adult 24+ loans and speak to one of our impartial Careers Advisers. Focus on Algarkirk

Algarkirk is Putting its History on the Map Residents of Algarkirk and local history buffs are being invited to join a new group dedicated to uncovering the past about the village they live in

A

s part of the Heritage Lottery funded project to restore the endangered church of St Peter and St Paul, it is planned to establish a local history research centre that will act as an archive of information relating to all the history at the church and the village of Algarkirk, throughout the ages. “The whole of Algarkirk cum Fosdyke is included in the Acre Books of 1734 and 1813, which divide the area into 32 sections, each section called a Bounder,” explained volunteers Madeleine Fox, who with her husband Ashley, has already begun mapping the history of their ‘Bounder’. The books, which were primarily used at the time for the collection of rent, reveal a wealth of information including old road names, key places, who lived where, and what rent was paid and to whom. “We started our research in the hope of discovering more about our own home, which is also a listed building, “ Madeleine added. “But, once you realise what information can be gleaned from which sources, you can apply the process to different localities. So, while we are very keen to unlock the history of Algarkirk’s past, the skills our volunteers are learning can be applied to any area. There are opportunities for local residents to each record the history of their own Bounder, with help and advice from the research team. It is a fascinating process and great fun too!” The bounder mapping is just one aspect of the development of the Algarkirk heritage centre: volunteers are being guided through a range of researching and recording opportunities. One small group of residents are already busy cataloguing documents, others recording oral histories and mapping the churchyard.

Training is also available for those who are interested in delivering guided tours of the Grade I medieval church at the centre of this project, which again, includes general information and principles that can be applied elsewhere. “Lincolnshire is full of wonderful examples of heritage,” said Natalie Lunt, heritage officer of Algarkirk’s major project group (AMPG). “And so many attractions are preserved and developed through the dedication and support of volunteers. This initiative offers everyone, not just those in Algarkirk, a chance to learn and develop new skills that will enable them to be even more effective in their endeavours.” An online collection of images, videos, sound recordings and text has been set up on Algarkirk’s Historypin website, which can be viewed at http:// www.historypin.org/en/algarkirk. If you would like to contribute to the collection you can do so be creating a free account on the Historypin website, or by contacting the Algarkirk research team. To find out more about how you can get involved with this exciting project please contact algarkirk@ heritagelincolnshire.org or call 01529 461499. Information is also available on the project website: http://www.algarkirkchurch.org.uk/.

“We started our research in the hope of discovering more about our own home, which is also a listed building,” Madeleine added. “But, once you realise what information can be gleaned from which sources, you can apply the process to different localities.”

Footcare

Taking Care of your Feet Looking after our feet is so important as any little problems can soon turn into big problems. We look at some common problems and what you can do to avoid them

R

“...everyone with Diabetes should regularly see a foot care professional as they will be able to spot any potential problems and either treat them or take preventative action so that a problem does not develop.”

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

egularly seeing a foot care professional will enable you to stay on top of any chronic problems you might have. There are some conditions you can manage yourself but if in doubt book yourself an appointment and be seen by a specialist! From ingrowing toenails to bunions to Athletes Foot, it might seem like there is always something lurking ready to attack our feet but some basic care can help control conditions or avoid them all together. One of the most common fungal infections is Athletes Foot. When your feet are regularly moist or wet (for example if you exercise a lot, hence the name) then the fungus finds conditions perfect for spreading. As well as causing itching and peeling skin the infection can spread to the toenails and cause thickening and yellowing of the nail. To help your feet stay healthy make sure that after you shower you take the time to ensure your feet are completely dry. You can also alternate your footwear to give each pair of shoes / trainers time to completely dry out before you put them back on again. When you hear the word “Verruca” it’s easy to think of childhood and swimming pools! But they can affect us at any age. Verrucae are warts which typically occur on the soles of the feet. The virus which causes verrucae are highly contagious - so much so that you can contract them from walking across the same floor as someone who already has them, hence the prevalence in swimming and communal areas. Wearing flip flops in communal areas and not sharing

20 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

towels is a good start in avoiding them. There are overthe-counter treatments available if you get a verucca but if it lasts a while then a foot care specialist will need to get involved. If you suffer from Diabetes your feet can suffer as a result. One of the most common symptoms is loss of sensation from the toes upwards. Blood flow to the feet can be reduced and as such it is harder to detect when you have injured your feet and also, because of this reduced flow, any injuries will take longer to heal which increases the risk of infection. For this reason everyone with Diabetes should regularly see a foot care professional as they will be able to spot any potential problems and either treat them or take preventative action so that a problem does not develop. Circulation and sensation will also be checked. Making sure you wear comfortable fitting shoes and socks is helpful in keeping your feet healthy. The consequences of leaving your feet unchecked if you have Diabetes can be very serious so developing good habits early on will help keep your feet healthy for as long as possible.

Looking After Your Teeth

Looking After Your Teeth Looking after your teeth day-to-day is habit for most of us. Should you not be completely happy with your smile, however, there are cosmetic procedures available to help you “Many adults choose Invisalign which uses a system of clear aligners which look like clear gum shields. Unlike orthodontic braces they can be removed while you eat and brush your teeth.”

F

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

irstly it’s worth noting that unless a treatment is clinically necessary to help you maintain good oral health then the NHS will not provide it, so some of the treatments below will have to be performed privately. If you are in any doubt then have a chat with your dentist as they will know what is covered and what is not, as well as any charges involved. Ask anyone about common dental treatments and after perhaps fillings they will mention braces, perhaps conjuring up some memories of discomfort from childhood. Should your teeth need straightening then braces are for you. This is usually covered on the NHS and done in childhood. However there is no reason why you can’t straighten your teeth as an adult. Orthodontic braces are fitted and these are the ones we are all familiar with – metal wires and brackets attached to your teeth. Through gradual tightening your teeth will be encouraged to straighten. The amount of time they will be on will be dictated by how much straightening your teeth will need. If you don’t like the sound of that there are lingual braces which attach to the back of your teeth so aren’t as visible. Many adults choose Invisalign which uses a system of clear aligners which look like clear gum shields. Unlike orthodontic braces they can be removed while you eat and brush your teeth. This is an expensive option, however. To avoid braces all together then porcelain veneers are an option. They don’t straighten your teeth but they will make it look like you have straight teeth. A porcelain veneer is make and affixed to the front of your tooth. A big benefit is that it won’t take months (a couple of

22 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

“An alternative is laser whitening in which a whitening bleach is painted on to your teeth and then a laser is shone onto them to activate the whitener.” visits to the dentist) but it is worth noting that they will eventually need replacing and aren’t the cheapest option. Veneers can also be used for chipped and broken teeth to make them look whole again. Veneers also improve the look of the colour of the teeth. Tooth whitening is another way to improve your smile – especially if you smoke or drink lots of tea and coffee which can lead to staining of the teeth. During your first appointment the dental professional will take an impression of your teeth and send them off so that a mouth guard can be made. When the guard is ready you will return to the dentist to receive it and your bleaching gel. You will be taught how to use them and will then regularly use the gel at home for the next 2-4 weeks. An alternative is laser whitening in which a whitening bleach is painted on to your teeth and then a laser is shone onto them to activate the whitener. This takes around an hour rather than the weeks it takes with gel. For teeth which are broken, weakened by decay or have particularly large fillings the tooth can be crowned. A crown fits over the remaining part of the tooth and it gives it strength and a normal shape. If a few teeth are missing but you don’t feel quite ready for dentures there is the option of a dental bridge. A crown goes on either side of the gap and then a false tooth is attached where the missing tooth was. Unlike dentures this can’t be removed. If you are thinking that any of these procedures could be for you it is worth having an initial conversation with your dentist as they will be able to advise you on the best course of action as cosmetic dentistry is not suitable for everyone and you should always make sure you are fully informed of any potential risks as well as aftercare instructions.

Motability

Can the Motability Scheme Work for You? The Motability Scheme looks after more than 630,000 customers, helping them to exchange their mobility allowance for a vehicle to suit their needs – might you be able to benefit from their services?

B

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

eing disabled can sometimes mean it can be very difficult to get around. It can turn the simplest of jobs such as a trip to the supermarket into something complicated and uncomfortable. The Motability Scheme helps disabled people exchange part or all of their mobility allowance for a vehicle, scooter or powered wheelchair. If a car would make a huge difference to how you live your life then Motability will be able to help. The best part is that to qualify you don’t need to drive yourself as you can nominate a member of your family, a carer or a friend to drive on your behalf. If you want to join the scheme you will need to meet some eligibility requirements. If you receive one of the following you could be eligible: - Higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) - Enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) - War Pensioners mobility supplement - Armed Forces Independence Payment Once you are in the scheme you will find a huge range of cars to choose from which will be paid for from either part or all of your mobility payment. Providing you remain eligible you will be able to choose a new car every 3 years which includes regular servicing, RAC cover, car tax, replacement tyres, window and windscreen repair and many other added extras. Of the cars available over 500 require no advance payment. Over 150 cars in the scheme cost less that the allowance. If you are happy to part with all of the allowance it will increase your choice by 350 vehicles. If you already have a privately owned car you would like to trade in or sell it or have a lump sum available then you can choose a vehicle which requires a one-off advance payment. This

24 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

will take your choice to around 3000 cars. It is worth noting that the cost of running a vehicle will need to be taken into account such as insurance excesses and the largest expense which is, of course, fuel. Making sure you choose a car which is fuel efficient can help but taking the time to estimate costs before you begin will ensure you have fully assessed the affordability of owning a car. If you would like to get in touch with Motability they can be reached in the following ways: Telephone 0300 4564566 (8am – 7pm Monday to Friday, 9am – 1pm Saturday) Send a message through their website, www. motability.co.uk Or you can write to them : Motability Operations, City Gate House, 22 Southwark Bridge Road, London, SE1 9HB Car Dealerships and Service Centres in Boston which participate in the scheme: Listers Boston Marriotts Mazda Cropleys Suzuki Vertu Boston JCT600 Audi Intercounty Truck & Van Ltd Taylors Boston Marshall Boston Mercedes-Benz Boston Thurlby Motors

“Once you are in the scheme you will find a huge range of cars to choose from which will be paid for from either part or all of your mobility payment.”

T

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY, MOTORING JOURNALIST he most up-todate Corsa VXR from Vauxhall is stimulating to look at and rousing to

drive. The beefy stance, the eccentrically fat alloy wheels and the hiphugging sports seats aren’t exactly understated. And, if for some reason you’ve had a ‘forgetful moment’ and need reminding further that you’re not in any ‘ordinary’ Corsa, don’t worry, because the letters ‘V.X.R’ are pretty prominent. So, in terms of aesthetics, the Corsa has done a good job of ‘bigging itself up’ before even going anywhere – but does it deliver on the move? The response to that is a somewhat schizophrenic one: yes, and no. You see, whilst the Corsa VXR does the 0-62mph sprint in just 6.5 seconds – faster than the Fiesta ST, Peugeot 208 GTI and the Renaultsport Clio 200, the front wheels sometimes find it hard to command the clout. This means when you hit the gas hard there’s a lot of torque-steer and the steering wheel can almost wrench itself free from your clasp. But this makes the Corsa entertaining – in a demanding sort of way. After all, the 143mph

26 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

model is a pure-bred from Vauxhall’s hot-hatch stable, and highly strung beasts need to be kept in check. On the straights, the mini motor with its mighty engine certainly attracts looks, and the deep grumble, building up to a turbo whistle, turns heads. But through the twisty bits is where you will grin like a Cheshire cat. This is because, Vauxhall has worked closely with dampersupplier, Koni, to develop a new technology, known as Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) for the new Corsa VXR. FSD allows damping forces to adapt to the car’s movements, ensuring that body control is maintained when the car is driven fast, but ride quality is optimised at lower speeds. The system is an entirely mechanical solution and does not require any electronic components such as sensors, cables or engine control units. Into the bargain, the car’s ride height has been lowered by 10mm all round. There’s also a new rear axle with new geometry for a modified roll rate. In combination with a new torsion profile rod, this results in improved responsiveness compared with the former model. The Corsa VXR’s spring rates, antiroll bars, rear-axle bearing bushes

are also new or revised. What’s more, for the first time, Vauxhall is offering a two-stage switchable electronic stability programme (ESP) and traction control (TC) with the Corsa VXR. In Competition Mode the traction control is inactive, while the ESP is relaxed to allow less intervention. For track use, the ESP can be fully disabled. And when it comes to scrubbing off speed – the Corsa VXR has it covered. Vauxhall and Brembo have worked hard to develop a braking system which will bring a very wild car to a swift stop. There’s no doubt about it, this is a white-knuckle car to drive, and one that will get you lots of attention. Perhaps too much, judging from the amount of boy racers determined to ‘take me on’ every time I wanted to nip to the supermarket. Fine; but if I wanted to be noticed by spotty 18 year olds wearing baseball caps back to front then I’d have bought an old Nova GTE with a fake turbo whistler rammed up the tailpipe. No, for me, the Corsa VXR isn’t quite sophisticated enough – but at over £18,000 on the road, you’ll need to have a relatively respectable job to manage to pay for a brand new one.
