Cash posted for Holbeach Seniors’ Link A forum to help keep senior residents better informed is one of the first organisations to receive cash under South Holland District Council’s Designated Members’ Budget scheme. Holbeach Seniors’ Link has been awarded a total of £400 - £200 each from the budgets held by Whaplode and Holbeach St John’s ward Councillors Malcolm Chandler and Bob Creese – to help pay the organisation’s annual postal bill. The organisation and its sister group Welland Seniors’ Forum have been keeping South Holland’s over 55s up to speed by sending out information on services for nearly 10 years. Forum chairman David Roberts said: “To re-introduce mailings for each meeting was beyond our financial limits so we decided to ask two of our councillors to help us out from the “pots

of money” allotted to each ward. Almost before I could catch my breath I was delighted to hear that our Whaplode and Holbeach St John’s councillors were prepared to cover the whole cost. This is just one more example of how SHDC is supportive of our work with older people. “ Councillor Chandler said: “Holbeach Seniors’ Link provides an invaluable service for older members of our community by providing support and information. This money will help them to continue that work.” The Designated Member Budget scheme, as voted for by SHDC, provides £5,000 (pro-rata) for each ward member to help fund community projects throughout a financial year. As the scheme came into force partway through 2011/12, the budget this year is £4,000.

This new form of indoor bowls just requires a carpet or hard floor to play on. Being played indoors also allows games to be played all year round with 2, 3 or 4 games going on at once.

Shane Ward from Lincolnshire Active Community Network said: “Indoor bowls is a great way for the local community to get involved in physical activity and meet new people. It will be very laid back and anyone can come along and give it a go”. The first week is completely free if you book in advance, and the cost per subsequent session is £2.00. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Shane on 01522 585 580 or e-mail bookings@lincolnshiresports. co.uk to book a place. Alternatively, just turn up on the day.

Holbeach Arts Festival: 11 – 16 October Following last year’s successful pilot Arts Festival, the PCC at All Saints’ decided that the event should become an annual tradition. The wonderful building in the centre of Holbeach becomes a venue for a host of performances, displays, demonstrations and workshops showing that a church is not just a place of worship but, more importantly, it has a role to play in the wider life of the community and in the ongoing vision of regeneration. The organisers hope the events will attract visitors from far and wide, as there is something for everyone from organ recitals to rock bands; paintings and poetry; stained glass workshops to demonstrations of lace making and quilting; from folk music to floral displays; deanery drama, a choir and a ukulele orchestra; and these are to name

but a few! The full programme of events may be found at the church’s website: www.allsaintsholbeach.org.uk or flyers are available in church. On Wednesday 12th October, there is a schools’ event when many local children will have the opportunity to visit the Festival, participate in some drama, learn some new skills and enjoy the wealth of craft work and paintings on display. Local children will be involved in some of the performances – a real showcase for the breadth of talent in the Holbeach area. Refreshments will be available throughout every day. Please don’t pass by the church without coming in and seeing what is going on during the Festival. You are assured of a very friendly welcome.

Holbeach & Fenland Gymnastics Club Needs Your Help! Holbeach and Fenland Gymnastics Club needs to raise £45,000 so it can transform a derelict warehouse into a gym. Currently based at Long Sutton’s Peele Community College, the club has been asked to move by March 2012. The new location – based on Lime Walk in Long Sutton – needs a tremendous amount of work – and needs to raise a lot of money to see the project through.

More than 100 local children enjoy using the gym club which has produced lots of local stars – from regional tumble champions to youngsters in national finals. If you can help with donations of building materials or financial donations, or if you can help with fundraising ideas, please contact Lauren Day by emailing LDay1987@aol.com or call Annette on 01406 425009.

These Beautiful Buildings Must Be Saved! This was said time and time again by visitors to the Holbeach Cemetery Chapels when they were open to the public on Sunday 11th September.

were pleasantly surprised to receive donations of over £100 to kick start a fund towards the restoration of the buildings.

A steady stream of visitors came from as far away as Bridlington, Surrey, Stamford, Spalding, Holbeach and surrounding villages.

Draft copies of a booklet about the chapels and history of the graves were on view at the Open Day and will soon be printed and for sale.

It was encouraging to hear from local people who had lived for many years in Holbeach but never seen inside the buildings that they were surprised how big they were and solidly built, obviously in need of repair but not beyond repair.

The legal formalities are about complete, and a feasibility study will be the next step before restoration begins. The time and effort will all be worthwhile once the chapels are returned to their former glory.

The weather was kind and people could appreciate the setting of the chapels which were considered to be “in the tidiest cemetery in the district.”

These pictures show the chapels in the 1920’s.

The Steering Committee had worked hard to organise the day and were grateful for the help of other volunteers, and the many cakes donated which were served with the free refreshments. Although no charges were made to visitors, the organisers

Visitors are being offered a colourful finale to Burghley House’s 2011 season with the spectacular Autumn Colours at Burghley during October. A blaze of golden leaves on trees around the sweeping parkland surrounding Burghley, in Lincolnshire, will set the scene for the country estate’s second annual flower festival. During October the spectacular State Rooms are transformed with beautiful floral displays created by local flower societies, offering a new perspective on England’s greatest Elizabethan house. Floral arrangements will reflect the atmosphere of each of the rooms as societies take their inspiration from the painted ceilings, 17th century art or the original purpose of a room, all with the guiding theme of Autumn Colours. As well as the displays within the house, there will also be a special plant sale during the Autumn Colours at Burghley flower festival, which this year takes place 8th – 16th October (not including 14th).

24017 www.bulleydavey.co.uk

October will also offer the last chance to catch the annual exhibition in the Sculpture Garden. which for 2011 features the dynamic sculptures of Julian Wild Incomplete Systems - Wild’s first major solo exhibition at an outdoor venue. Offering a different experience, fringed by trees in their autumnal foliage, the lakeside Sculpture Garden offers visitors a chance to discover contemporary sculpture in an historic setting. A mix of open space and trees create natural archways and ‘rooms’ containing discreetly hidden sculptures. During 2011 the House is open daily, excluding Fridays, until Sunday 30th October 2011, 11am to 4.30pm with guides in all the state rooms to answer any questions visitors may have. For full details visit www.burghley.co.uk or telephone 01780 752451.

Holbeach Ladies Football Team Update The team recently attended the ladies tournament in Bourne on Bank holiday Monday and came fourth on the day. The goal of the day had to go to Alex Roper who scored from beyond the centre line.

Forum, especially for you! In an attempt to try and vacate some spaces for shoppers, so that they can spend their money in your shops, The Boxing Academy & Teenage Drop In will be allowing retailers only, to park in their car park (next door to the Cllr Nick Worth Black Bull Pub) for free from September 1st. You will need to get a car parking pass from Limmings which you put on your car dashboard. It is only a few minutes’ healthy walk into town and if successful will take some cars off the street making it easier for everyone to park and spend their money in the town. Let’s give it a try and see if it makes a difference!

Advice - Dealing with Call Centres by Diane Clay

Many companies that are dealing in providing any kind of service to the customers are setting up call centres to cater to them. Some companies even have these centres operating twenty four hours all round the year. It’s been more than a decade since companies began moving call centres to India, with the promise of highly qualified staff on much lower wages, but customers were soon complaining. Now the trend is in reverse with firms such as BT, Santander, Aviva and Powergen having brought call centres back to the UK. Few people can honestly admit to ever having hung up the phone with a call-centre agent and thinking, “I really enjoyed that.” That’s probably because every call that is made to a call centre occurs because of a problem

or because the call centre is trying to sell a product or service that the consumer doesn’t want. We all have our own stories about phoning call centres, whether sorting out a massive electricity bill or trying to report a dodgy broadband connection. Here are a number of tips on how to deal with call centres: • Always get the name of the person you speak to. Call centre staff are supposed to keep a ‘log’ of your call, but are sometimes busy and forget to do so. If you have been made a promise and don’t have a name to back it up, then that promise may count for nothing later. • Ask the person you speak to for a direct line. This will save you time and money if you have to make more than one call to sort out your problem. • As soon as the phone starts ringing, take a note of the time so that you will know exactly how long you have been on hold. • Take notes of all your calls. Lawyers call these ‘contemporaneous notes’ - true notes made at the time things are happening - which can be very useful if you have a dispute with a company over the level of service it has provided.

Citizens Advice Bureau give free, confidential, impartial and independent advice to help you solve your problems.   South Holland CAB is open at :   24 The Crescent, Spalding PE11 1AF Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays 10am – 4pm;   Thursdays and Fridays 10am – 1pm Drop in for a short assessment interview during opening hours, prior to being offered an appointment. • If you don’t want junk mail - say so. Call centres employed by some banks and insurance companies play a recorded message warning that they may use your personal details ‘for marketing purposes’. This means they want to send you junk mail. The Data Protection Act says that if you tell the company you don’t want to receive such mailshots, they shouldn’t send you any. • If the first person you speak to can’t help, demand to speak to a more senior person. Although companies will rarely admit it, senior staff in call centres can have more scope for solving problems caused by red tape. But don’t ask to speak to the manager if your problem can be solved by a more junior member of staff. If you are wasting a manager’s time with a trivial problem, then you are taking them away from somebody who really needs the help. • If you’re fed up with cold calls, then you can make them stop. You can register with the Telephone Preference Service by calling 0845 0700707 (registration is free). It can take up to a month for your registration to take effect, but after this you should receive less cold calls. • Always be polite. Call centre staff are not the ones who make up the rules, and are not usually the ones who are to blame for poor service by the company they work for. There is nothing wrong with being assertive but don’t be abusive - swearing on the phone, or acting in a way that is offensive or threatening, can be a criminal offence. • If you’re still not happy, write a letter. If you ask the person you speak to for the proper trading address of a company, then they have to give you this information by law. Address the letter to someone in charge. They will find it harder to ignore a problem which is in front of them in writing. Just one additional reminder: don’t forget that those who work in call centres suffer from a huge amount of stress in their working days. Imagine spending your whole working day dealing with unhappy, and sometimes abusive, customers! Try to remember that they are not personally responsible for your problem – it is usually the product or the company that you have an issue with. “We all know we should have one, but often do not understand why.” What Happens without a will?

Making a Will is the only way to ensure that your wishes are carried out after your death. If you have not made a valid will, your property will pass according to the Law of Intestacy. This may not be what you would have wished. In any event it is likely to take longer to finalise than if you had made a will. During this time your beneficiaries may not be able to draw any money from your estate. It can mean arguments and distress for relatives.

event of your death. This is particularly important in the case of one parent families or unmarried parents living together. A valid will nominating guardians is invaluable in such cases. If no one knows what you would have wanted, the Court will decide on the future of your children, and it may not be what your or your children would have wished.

If You Are Retired

Maybe you made a will a long time ago. It probably needs updating to include additional grandchildren or deletion of persons you no longer feel you wish to leave anything to. This article has been contributed by Paul Hammond a member of the Society of Will Writers.

If You Are Single

You will want your estate divided amongst friends, relatives and charities of your choosing and in the proportions you want.

If You Are Married

Don’t assume “my other half will get everything”. Brothers and sisters or parents may have a claim. Often your children have a right to part of your estate. If you are living as a couple but not officially married, you may be treated as a single person and a surviving partner may get nothing at all. One thing you can be certain of - there will be arguments and disputes at a time when the family should be coping with the loss of a loved one.

If You Are A Parent

You should consider who would look after your children in the

School News The Gleed Schools

These are exciting times for the Gleed schools, as we work towards becoming one co-educational school. If the plans go ahead on 2 November we will become Sir John Gleed School. The name was chosen to reflect the history of the schools and their wellestablished, successful place in the local community. Both the boys and girls have a new uniform which has been a great success, proving very popular. Our young people look extremely smart and wear their new uniform with pride. The two schools are well known in the town and beyond, having educated many local people. This year sees our 70th anniversary and it seems an ideal time to look back as we prepare to move forward to our new future together. On 1 November the students will have a series of events to celebrate the occasion. In the afternoon we will be holding a tea for all former students of both Gleed Girls’ and Gleed Boys’ followed by a performance from

School News Ayscoughfee Hall School Ayscoughfee Hall School have started the new term in fine form following a hugely successful year, culminating in a fantastic inspection during the summer term.

He quotes “we are especially pleased when, among other references, pupils’ successes in Maths, English, Science, ICT and Music are particularly noted as strengths, that our pastoral care is ‘excellent’ and that the quality of provision in our Early Years Foundation Stage is ‘outstanding’. The report also states that pupils are happy, confident and proud of their school. They are strongly motivated to learn and keen to take part in all activities. They feel very well looked after”.

The school, being independent, is rigorously inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate over a five day period. Brian Chittick, the Head Teacher, is particularly delighted with the latest report which clearly identifies how good the school is, highlighting many of the strengths with descriptions such as ‘outstanding’, ‘excellent’ and ‘exceptional’.

Spotlight on Long Sutton & Sutton Bridge by Kate Tarrant From this issue onwards, we will be bringing you a special editorial focus every month on a different local area. We want to celebrate our local towns and villages, reminding everyone to support the shops and businesses that we have on our doorsteps – and to remember what’s where! This month we start with Long Sutton and Sutton Bridge..... Long Sutton

Long Sutton is a pretty market town with an interesting history, thanks to its setting in the fertile silt lands of the Fens. Named as one of the ‘Best Kept Villages’ in Lincolnshire, the town is famous for its beautiful floral displays held during spring and summer.

drop in

Long Sutton and Sutton Bridge are bustling towns, offering new and varied choices – so if you haven’t ever done more than a drive through on the way to the coast, make sure you stop in for a couple of hours and take advantage of what they have to offer.

The busy Friday market still held today dates back to the early 13th century, when the town was a thriving trading centre. In fact, by the mid-14th century Long Sutton was said to be one of the richest communities in Lincolnshire! The prosperity continued well into the 20th century. As recently as the 1950s, eleven trains would transport passengers and local product to and from the town - every day! There are lots of interesting shops to visit in Long Sutton – whether you’re looking for a quirky gift, somewhere with character to eat, or just fancy a browse for something different. The church is beautiful - and well worth a visit!

Sutton Bridge

Did you know that Sutton Bridge was once marshland? It was reclaimed from the sea in the 16th century. The Sutton Bridge Port Act was passed in 1875, which authorised the construction of the dock. Unfortunately, due to sinking and subsidence, the port’s development was severely halted until the current port was opened in 1987. The port was and still is a busy industrial hive of activity. If you fancy a walk or a picnic you can head to Sutton Bridge marsh – before you get to the marsh there is the opportunity to stop and watch the ships as they go about their activities.

Above: Long Sutton photo courtesy of Stuart Gibbard of Gibbard Tractors, www.gibbardtractors.co.uk  Below: Sutton Bridge photo courtesy of Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, www.spalding-gentlemens-society.org

The swing bridge that you see today was built in 1897. Originally it was a duel bridge, allowing both vehicles and trains to cross the River Nene. This bridge is the third bridge to cross the river – the first bridge was opened in 1831. Did you know that the artist Sir Peter Scott spent time as a resident of Sutton Bridge? He lived in the lighthouse on the east bank of the River Nene. Sir Peter Scott established a nature reserve which is now called the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. Sutton Bridge is still a busy town today. Just a few minutes from Long Sutton, you will find lots of different shops to browse – from crafts and antiques, to restaurants and cafes. In fact, if you want to add to your antique collection, Long Sutton and Sutton Bridge are the places to be. Both towns have a number of antique and craft shops to look around.

FAMILY DAYS

If you are looking for a family orientated day then right on your doorstep is The Butterfly and Wildlife Park. Voted Lincolnshire’s Family Attraction of the Year by the Good Britain Guide, it’s the home to hundreds of butterflies, birds of prey and reptiles. And don’t forget Silverwood Garden Centre and Tearooms – whether you fancy a cup of tea and a slice of cake, a browse through the garden centre or a nose in the new shops, you can easily spend an afternoon captivated by what’s on offer.

Reading Corner

by Joanne Phillips of Spalding Library

Adult Read of The Month -Minding Frankie by Maeve Binchy Popular Irish author Maeve Binchy is well known for her uplifting stories of Dublin life and Minding Frankie, her latest book is no exception. Frankie is a baby in need of a home and a father after the death of her mother and her early life in a close knit community is at the heart of the novel. Around her moves a large cast of characters all with a story to tell and a helping hand for those looking after baby Frankie. Moira the social worker fears that the child will be neglected but her extended adopted family are determined to prove her wrong. This is a warm and cosy novel with a few heart-stopping moments and is ideal for a few evenings in front of the fire now the nights are drawing in.

Children’s Read of The Month - Beast Quest series by Adam Blade Boys can be reluctant readers but the Beast Quest books by Adam Blade have got lots of them into the habit of picking up a book to follow the latest adventure. Heroic Tom who features in all of the books travels around defeating evil with his best friend Elenna. They are accompanied on their adventures by Storm Tom’s trusty stallion and Silver, Elenna’s wolf friend who is as fast as the wind. There are 60 books in the series to date and more being published. Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force The Spalding Detachment of Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force is steadily growing in strength year by year. We are a youth organisation with the obvious military theme aiming to offer boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 18 excellent opportunities to learn new skills and meet new people. The group teaches military skills such as drill and field craft but also offers cadets the opportunity to learn first aid, participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and BTEC awards.

and begin to lead other cadets. Their confidence and abilities grow and grow and as they become more senior the prospect of bigger and better things results. This year we had the very exciting news that three of our cadets had won places on a trip-of-a-life time to the Kingdom of Lesotho in South Africa. If you would like to see what cadets could offer, we parade on a Wednesday evening between 7pm until 9pm at the cadet hut near the Castle Sports Centre. Anyone is welcome to visit.

the building. We wrapped the session up with drink and biscuits (included in the cost), and song time with parachute. Everyone had a nice messy time.

Our first event this August was the annual coach trip, where the coach is funded out of general funds. The committee decided that Sundown Adventure land would be the venue for this year, and we filled a 53 seater coach, with babies and toddlers from the group together with their parents/grandparents/and older siblings, and all the children had a wonderful time. In the middle of the holidays we did a play day at the reading rooms. The children could try to find toy dinosaurs in a tray full of jelly, simply play with some slimy slippery shaving foam, finger paint, and do junk modelling (where some of the children made some super robot and monster models out of cardboard boxes, toilet rolls and margarine tubs). There was also a bubble machine in the play garden at the back of

Late in the month we held a Teddy bears picnic in Carters park, where the children could come with their teddy bears dressed up for the best dressed teddy bear competition, and could have their faces painted (done by one of our valued helpers), and have the opportunity to decorate homemade cakes & biscuits (made by some of our regulars). We also had a treasure hunt on during the event. All our holiday events are open to older siblings. We are on Facebook under ‘Holbeach Parent and Toddler’ and can be found on Netmums if you look through the local area (south lincs and Holbeach). Anyone is welcome and we meet at the Sugar Beet Club every Wednesday at 8pm unless we’re on a visit. different competitions between different clubs – at county and national level. New members night will be held on 12th October at the Fun Farm, Weston. It’s free and there is no obligation to join (but we hope you do!). For more info contact Will Tyrrell 07985 476263.

What’s in Season in October?

Butternut squash, Celeriac, Chestnuts, Elderberries, Figs, Kale, Oysters, Partridge, Pumpkin, Quince, Walnuts

Spiced Carrot And Butternut Squash Soup

Serves 4 The carrot and squash start to break down after half an hour’s cooking and, together with the starch from the pasta, will thicken the soup without the need for a blender. This is great for feeding a family. Serve with fresh bread and butter Ingredients 1 red onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 tbsp olive oil 2 large carrots, peeled 1 medium butternut squash, peeled and deseeded Salt and black pepper 2-3 thyme sprigs, leaves picked 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped, or ¼ tsp dried crushed chillies (remove if cooking for children) 1.25 litres chicken or vegetable stock 75g dried spaghetti or small pasta shells Method Sweat the onion and garlic in the oil over a medium heat for 5-7 minutes until soft. Chop the carrots and butternut squash into 1.5cm, dice and add to the pan. Season and cook for another 6-7 minutes until the vegetables start to soften. Stir in the thyme leaves and the fresh or dried chilli, then pour in the stock. Stir and bring to the boil. Simmer for 25-30 minutes until the carrots and squash are soft and beginning to break down. Break the spaghetti into small pieces and add to the soup or add the pasta shells. Stir well and return to the boil. Simmer for about 10 minutes or until the pasta is cooked and the soup has thickened slightly. Check for seasoning and ladle into soup bowls.

Recipes

Honey-Glazed Pumpkin Wedges    Serves 4 This is one of the easiest seasonal recipes. Pumpkin seed oil is now available in many supermarkets, and it gives this dish a lovely flavour.

Ingredients 1 small pumpkin, cut into wedges and seeds removed 100ml honey 2 tbsp pumpkin seed oil Freshly ground salt and pepper 2 tbsp sesame seeds Method Gently cook in the wedges in oil in a heavy pan and add the honey and sesame seeds when the pumpkin has softened.

Chocolate Chestnut Brownies    Makes 16

Ingredients 140g dark chocolate, chopped into small pieces 115g unsalted butter 225g caster sugar 170g plain flour 1/2tsp baking powder 200g chestnut purée 3 eggs, beaten Method Heat the oven to gas mark 3, and line a 20cm square cake tin with baking parchment. Melt the chocolate, butter and sugar in a heavy bottomed saucepan over a low heat. Don’t let it get too hot. Sift the flour and baking powder together into a large bowl. Mix the chestnut purée into the chocolate mixture. Make a well in the flour and incorporate the eggs and chocolate mixture. Use a whisk if you need to, to break up any lumps of flour. Put the mixture into the cake tin and spread it flat. Bake for 20 minutes, and allow to cool completely in the tin before cutting into squares. www.simply-holbeach.co.uk  SIMPLY HOLBEACH  23 22

Picking Your Pumpkin

For the easiest carving, select a large, ripe pumpkin with a smooth, even surface and a stem. If you plan to light your pumpkin with a candle choose one at least 20cm high. When you get it home, clean and dry it.

The Lid

To create a lid, remove the top of the pumpkin, use a paring knife (under parent supervision) to cut around the stem with and angle to make the lid taper toward the inside, which will keep the lid from slipping in later. Scrape the lid clean.

Scrape It Out

Use a large metal spoon or an ice-cream scoop to remove the pumpkin’s innards. Since a thinner wall is easier to carve and makes for a brighter lantern, scrape the sides until the walls are about 2cm thick all around. Flatten a spot on the bottom for the candle.

Make A Pattern

Sketch your own design with a pencil and

paper. Draw it freehand onto the pumpkin with a washable marker (you can then wipe off mistakes with a paper towel).

Start Carving!

Using a paring knife (under parent supervision) Begin at the centre as working outward from the centre of the design keeps pressure off carved spots. Rather than push right through on the first try, run the knife or tool over each line a few times.

Remove The Pieces

After you’ve carved the shapes, carefully push them out with your finger. You may need to remove larger shapes, such as gaptoothed grins, in pieces.

Light It Up The Night

Place a tea light in the pumpkin, If the candle won’t stay lit, increase the air supply by enlarging some features or cutting a vent in the lid.

Mum Knows Best? It’s been a busy month in the Cook household, and the most exciting part for me, is being asked to write a regular column in Simply Holbeach to share with you my experiences, ups and downs of family-life as a young Mum and any outings we go on. Fistly I’m delighted to introduce myself, I am Louise Cook and at 22 years old, proud Mum to two gorgeous children, Jake (3) and Louie (18 months), are the apple of my eye and I am really looking forward to keeping you informed of their antics! This month we have taken the boys for their first swimming session at Spalding Swimming Pool. It’s a fantastic facility with a dedicated family pool, which is slightly warmer for little ones. Both boys absolutely loved the water, and I have now enrolled Jake in to weekly lessons. I am planning the same time to take Louie to get used to the water before he can join in the lessons when he is 3. Summer seems a distant memory but I think Autumn is such an exciting time, Halloween, leaf crunching, leaf printing, The Pumpkin Festival in Spalding and of course all the yummy comfort food we can enjoy – casseroles, sausage and mash and pies are all family favourites for us. My two sons are young and so rather than Trick or Treating this year I will be having a Halloween party at home with Jake and Louie’s friends. We will be dressing up, with a prize for the best costume, playing apple bobbing and some traditional party games. All our food will be Halloween themed with the boys and I baking Ghost and Ghoul biscuits, which I am glad to share the recipe with you to make about 16 biscuits. Ingredients • 100g (3½oz) butter • 100g (3½oz) caster sugar • 1 medium egg • Finely grated rind of • ½ a lemon

• 150g (5oz) plain flour, sifted • 60g (2oz) ground almonds Method • Preheat oven to Gas Mark 4/180°C. • Soften the butter with a wooden spoon, beat in the sugar until light and fluffy. • Beat in the egg and lemon rind, flour and ground almonds. • Dust the work surface with flour. Roll the dough out in 2 or 3 batches and cut out shapes with cutters. • Place the shapes on baking trays and bake for about 12-14 minutes. Cool for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. To decorate: • Make up icing with sifted icing sugar and water. Leave some white icing in the bowl and colour the rest of it in separate bowls with the black, orange and green food colourings, or whatever colourings you have. I normally let the children ice the cookies, spreading it on with a palette knife, or piping patterns on using icing tubes. Finally, decorate the biscuits with chocolate strands and chocolate drops. From us all at the Cook household, Happy Halloween!

r e n r o C s ’ t Pe Cost cutting with your pet! As a nation we are more cash-strapped than ever and as we continue to find ways to save the pennies some of our beloved pets are paying the price. The number of abandoned pets over the last year has sky rocketed, animal rescue centres and refuges are becoming overcrowded as individuals struggle to hold down the cost of caring for their pets. But it doesn’t have to be this way, there are plenty of cost cutting exercises that will help save money and allow your furry friend to stay with the family. Here are a few of our top cash saving tips...

Buy better quality food We know what you’re thinking, ‘that’s more expensive’, but remember that cheaper foods will set you back in the end. They are full of less digestible filler material and artificial colours that offer few nutrients and can contribute to allergies and digestive problems. A high quality, age appropriate food will result in a healthy coat, more energy and fewer costly trips to the vet.

Don’t overload One of the things the UK is confronting in animals, as well as humans, is a huge obesity problem. Look at the portion sizes you’re dishing up. Serving moderate portions not only saves you money on food , but it also reduces the likelihood of obesity. Plus, if you’re feeding your pet a better quality food it will leave them far fuller for longer. As well as overfeeding with the meals, we also need to learn to fight the urge to spoil our pets with too many treats! That doesn’t mean don’t treat them, just keep it in moderation. And, when you’re going to treat, why not kill two birds with one stone and buy a treat that can offer another use too, such as Dentastix which help clean your dog’s teeth.

26

Talk to Rooke’s Clearly, if your dog/cat/hamster has been run over you shouldn’t hang around, take them to the vet immediately. But minor ailments sometimes cure themselves. You wouldn’t visit the doctor at the first sign of a runny nose, so why seek expensive help as soon as your pet sneezes? Recent research suggests unnecessary emergency vet appointments cost UK pet owners £118m a year, made up of vets’ fees, travel costs and lost annual leave. Think of what could be saved if you cut it out! If your pet has a minor problem, talk to the friendly staff at Rooke’s who will be able to advise you on the best course of action.

Keep jabs up-to-date Paying to get your pet vaccinated against nasty illnesses means a hit on your wallet every year, but not doing so might prove a false economy. If your animal falls ill with something it could have been vaccinated against and you don’t have insurance, you could end up paying far more than the price of the jabs.

23 High Street, Spalding PE11 1TX Tel: 01775 713005 www.rookespetproducts.co.uk

And even if you do have insurance, some policies will refuse to pay out if an illness could have been prevented with vaccination.

Research Some vet clinics offer low-cost spay and neuter clinics after hours and weekends, on a first-come-first-serve basis. These events are usually staffed by the vet technicians, rather than the doctor, so they do not replace a visit that requires more advanced knowledge.

Pet insurance One of the reasons why medical care has become so expensive is the recent growth spurt of procedures your pet can undergo MRIs, cat scans, cancer treatments. Kidney transplants, though life-saving, are a £15,000 surgery that also typically requires the pet owner to adopt the donor animal too. Accidents, too, can be costly. Pet insurance is one way to take some sting out of the bill. The cost of a policy typically runs about £200-£600 per year and many cover both regular and emergency visits.

Have your pet spayed/neutered Make sure you don’t end up with more mouths to feed by taking steps to prevent your animal reproducing; obviously, this is one for larger pets, not the likes of goldfish. If you are on a low income, you might be able to get a subsidy. Cats Protection offers financial assistance with neutering to cat owners who are full-time students or on means-tested benefits, while the Blue Cross offers subsidised treatment for pets whose owners are on benefits, extending beyond neutering and spaying.

Home checkups and care Weekly home checkups are a great way to nip potential health problems in the bud and save the costly vet bills in the future.

Simple procedures include: • Checking under your pet’s fur for lumps, bumps, flakes or scabs. Check your pet’s ears and eyes for signs of redness or discharge. Make note of any changes in her eating or drinking habits. If something seems off, call your vet right away. • Learn how to clean your pet’s ears, especially if your dog is prone to ear infections. • Brush your pet’s teeth regularly with a toothpaste formulated for pets and check their gums. In some cases, this can help prevent the need for dental cleanings, which can run up to £200 per visit. • Check your pet’s breath. Bad breath can indicate a digestive problem that’s better dealt with sooner rather than later. • Save the price of a visit to your groomer with regular brushings. Spotlight on Wrights Mews by Kate Tarrant September 16th saw celebrations in Holbeach as expansion was completed at Wrights Mews. The two new units offer businesses affordable space close to Holbeach town centre. The site already had nine units just off Park Road and the addition of two more through funding from The Wash Fens Rural Development Programme brings the total to eleven. In February 2009 the Wash Fens Rural Development Programme was awarded £2m to support project applications for rural development through the Department for Environment. The opening speech in the ceremony from David Thorpe, Chairman of Wash Fens Rural Development Programme explained they provided the grant that made the development possible. David said ‘The timing of this project is incredibly important– considering the economic climate, it’s a fantastic project for the area.’ David said the project has been a great example of team work to pull everything together. It was especially inspiring with Steward’s use of local businesses and in a tough economic climate we all need to work to support each other. On the day Solar Energy Specialists Ltd were officially handed the keys to their new unit within the development. Councillor Nick Worth delivered his speech in John

Hayes absence. Nick thanked everyone involved for the vision of developing Wrights Mews. ‘It’s

changed the area unbelievably; it’s made a real difference to this area of Holbeach.’ ‘It’s a high quality project that’s provided employment for local people – and the vast majority of contractors involved in the project were local.’ ‘The Wrights Mews development is good news for Holbeach.’ The whole area has had a makeover and therefore benefits not just new businesses to the units but existing ones too. If you would be interested in viewing the last remaining unit please contact R. Longstaff & Co via email commercial@longstaff.com or call 01775 765536.

Blitz Your Bathroom Remodelling your bathroom is a great way of modernising your home without having to spend a lot of money. Like any home improvement it’s about making your home more comfortable for you and your family, so if you can do this and add to its market value then it has got to be worth the effort. Your bathroom should be your inner sanctum – a place where you can shut off from the rest of the world, a place where you can relax and unwind after a hard day’s work. However, if you have a young family the space needs to be practical and child friendly too, but with some clever planning you can create a stylish and luxurious space that will accommodate the needs of the whole family.

What is currently working for you and what isn’t?

The main thing is to work out what you need for you and your family. Sometimes you may require a complete new bathroom; sometimes it simply requires a little updating. If you are replacing a suite and your current layout works, then don’t change it. Re-plumbing a bathroom can be expensive, so if you feel that major changes are needed talk to your plumber first.

Establish what budget you have

prefer to have the option.

Plan your space

If you are changing the layout, remember to speak to a plumber before any decisions are made. Then either draw your room out on a piece of paper or use one of the on-line room planners to help organise your space. Remember to include location of pipes, windows, radiator, door and electric sockets. Have a look at the different styles of suites available and decide on a style that works for you. Note their sizes and create templates so you can play around with your layout until you are 100% happy with what you see.

Choosing a suite

There are a huge selection of fantastic, stylish, contemporary bathrooms suites available that do not cost the earth, so spend time searching. Consider suites with wall hung basins and toilets, or semi pedestal basins if you need to create an illusion of space. However, if space is not an issue why not invest in a his and her basins set on a wooden stand and team it with a free standing bath for the ultimate in bathroom luxury.

Storage

Adults and children alike use lots of products so think about how and where you are going to home them. If floor space is not an issue, opt for a basin cabinet, or if you prefer a more

streamlined look, consider furniture with several uses such as a long, narrow mirrored cabinet that can be fixed against a wall or slotted into a corner. Just remember the fewer toiletries on show, the bigger and cleaner the space will look.

by Sue Hessom

Heating

In order to maximise floor and wall space consider adding a stylish vertical radiator that doubles as a towel rail or if preferred, consider under floor heating.

Tiling

Here you can really let your imagination run wild, no matter what size your room! There are some fantastic tiles available at the moment to suit all personal tastes. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different colours and sizes to create a real focal point in specific areas such as behind the sink and shower. The look is amazing and it will focus the eye from narrow rooms or tiny spaces!

Flooring

Sue runs successful interior design company, Tidy Interiors, here in Lincolnshire. If you have a specific need please contact Sue via her website www.tidyinteriors.co.uk, email tidyinteriors@gmail.com or call 01476 564035 or 07540 612 143. is easy to use and can be laid straight on top of existing tiles – ask at your local DIY store for details.

Accessories

This will need to be practical, slipresistant, hygienic and easy to clean. Natural stone, ceramic tiles, vinyl, specially treated wood and laminate are popular choices. However, if your DIY skills are not that great, have a look at the clip-tile flooring – this

Finish your space with some trendy, funky taps and accessories. Use a style that sits comfortably with the rest of your room. Don’t skimp on your accessories and if needed take some of the budget from your suite to put towards accessorising. Believe me, the overall effect will be worth it!

When budgeting, make a list of everything that you will need from furniture to towels, that way you won’t have any financial surprises that may halt proceedings. If you are replacing the suite research tells us white is the preferred colour of most home buyers – it is light, clean and space enhancing and will allow the bathroom to be updated in later years with minimum expense. And if you currently have a bath, then you should replace it. Having a bathroom with no bath can have a diverse effect on your asking price when you come to sell. You may not enjoy or miss a bath, but most people would still

Weddings by Hayley Willerton Congratulations on your engagement, but what now? The key when you start out, and throughout your wedding planning journey, should be good organisation and keeping a wedding checklist. So whether you’re just getting started or have most of the basics in place, we hope this guide will help keep your stress levels to a minimum! Our wedding plan covers a 12 month period but you can adjust it according to your own. Simply start at the top of the list tackling each task one by one – not forgetting to delegate where you can.

12 Months Before

• Announce your engagement to family and friends and plan an engagement party • Place an engagement announcement in your local newspaper • Work on the budget • Choose a wedding date - select a few days in case your first choice is booked • Choose a location and reserve your ceremony and reception venue • Begin a rough guest list and compile current addresses • Decide on who you’d like to have in your wedding party, including your maid of honour, bridesmaids and best man • Begin shopping for your wedding dress – the fun bit! • Attend a local bridal show or two and jot down notes about any exhibitors you really like • Purchase a wedding planning organiser or calendar to keep track of important dates and appointments (fittings, bridal shows, hair appointments, hen/stag do’s etc.)

6-9 Months Before

• Research and choose where you will have your gift list • Order your wedding dress and buy the underwear that you will wear with it (make sure you take these to all fittings) • Order other bridal accessories - shoes, gloves and veil • Begin shopping for bridesmaids dresses • Research for your entertainment and photographer - use websites, local magazines and recommendations of family and friends. • Book your honeymoon and verify that you have any necessary travel documents including passports and visas and check out any vaccinations that you may need. • Begin researching florists & cake makers.

4-6 Months Before

• Select and order your wedding invitations, invitation envelopes and thank-you cards • Select and purchase wedding favours and wedding favour accessories - boxes, personalised wedding ribbon, labels, etc. • Purchase any desired ceremony and reception decorations - candles, vases, aisle runner, etc. • Start researching wedding cake pictures and local bakeries for ideas • Book a room for your wedding night, if you will be leaving for your honeymoon the next morning • Book hotel rooms or arrange other accommodations for out-of-town guests • Finalise your guest list and send out save-the-date cards, if using • Print out directions to the ceremony, reception, rehearsal dinner and hotel(s) for guests • Compile a list of area information and things to do for out-of-town guests • Reserve transport for you and your wedding party to and from the wedding

2-4 Months Before

• Order suits for the groom and male bridal party • Meet with your caterer to discuss the menu and your bar needs • Order your wedding cake • Buy thank-you gifts for mother, mother in law, bridesmaids, ushers, best man etc • Select and purchase wedding rings, and have them engraved if desired • Book any other specialty services – ice sculptures, chocolate fountain etc. • Purchase luggage and other travel necessities and attire for your honeymoon

34

• Order/renew passports if necessary, leaving ample time for them to be sent back to you • Schedule an appointment with your dentist if you’d like to have your teeth cleaned before the wedding

1-2 Months Before

• Post invitations out to everyone eight weeks prior to the wedding date and send a accommodation info to your out-of-town guests • Compile and complete name change documents • Fill out a change of address form at the post office, if necessary • Have ceremony programmes printed • If you are having your ceremony at a church, you will need to attend the reading of the bands. • Purchase a guest book, pen and other wedding accessories including toasting glasses, cake knife etc. • Choose your hair and makeup stylists and schedule a trial for both; also book appointments to have your hair, make-up and nails done on the day of the wedding • Review insurance information with your fiancé and check with employers to see what documents need to be updated once you are legally wed (car, home, medical, etc.)

2 Weeks to 1 Month Before

• Create a seating chart for the reception and make table numbers and place cards • Contact your caterer or venue with a final guest count • Print out a timeline of events for your wedding party and vendors - include contact information and mobile phone numbers • Meet with your photographer to finalise your wedding photo list of any must-have photos • Contact your florist to confirm your final flower order (bouquets, centrepieces, gifts etc.) and go over any decor details or venue logistics for the big day • Finalise your ceremony and reception music and song lists for your wedding band or DJ • Confirm hotel reservations for out-of-town guests • Plan a bridal lunch or dinner with your bridesmaids and close family • Pick up wedding rings and make sure the fit is good

1 Week Before

• Write out final cheques to businesses involved in your wedding day and task someone with distributing these at the wedding • Pick up your wedding dress • Confirm transport to and from venues • Pack for your honeymoon and confirm travel arrangements • Have your post office hold your mail, if necessary, while you are on your honeymoon • Treat yourself to a spa day or massage - you deserve it!

The Wedding Day

• Wake up early and do some easy exercise, or just go for a peaceful walk outdoors and try to soak up the day • Set aside some time to share gifts with your bridesmaids or close family members • Eat a healthy breakfast - you’ll need your energy for the big day ahead! • Enjoy it; it’s finally here and everything will be wonderful..... Congratulations!

Weddings by Hayley Willerton Some areas of wedding organisation are crucial to you having the best day of your life. We have got the inside scoop from those in the know, to ensure your wedding and honeymoon is one to remember. Sean Taylor of www.smthire.com shares some tips with us for bar services and marquees.

Of course, you may or may not have guests joining you. This again has options and wedding guests may wish to stay in alternate accommodation for differing durations, again your travel provider will advise and book this for you. If it is the two of you your wedding planner will arrange two witnesses for you or of course you may wish to invite someone you have met whilst on holiday.

Have You Thought About The Bar ?

Expect a simple ceremony, generally informal and the overseas registrars are very happy to include any reading you may wish to have. The wedding ceremony is legal under British law. The documents you will be asked to take must be the original, copies are not accepted.

Booking the right mobile / outside bar is key to making your special day complete. Having a great bar with professional staff is a very important part of any event as it is the most used service at any wedding. Get the bar company booked as soon as possible because plenty of notice is always important as many bars are booked 1 or 2 years in advance.

If there is something unique you would like incorporated into your day to make it even more special, your wedding planner will assist you with this.

Some venues require a licence to sell alcohol and 28 days notice is required , but most bars will take care of the licence for you. Think about arrival drinks for your reception whether it be Pimms, Sparkling Wine , Bucks Fizz or soft drinks. Also you might want table wine or glass hire and do not forget about the toast drink. Speak to any good mobile / outside bar company and they will guide you through the process and help you all the way.

Looking For Something Unique? Marquees have a unique atmosphere, set up temporarily for a single occasion they are a space apart from normal life. The bride and groom can stamp their character on an event in anyway they choose , unlike a fixed venue where the decorative possibilities may be limited and the size and shapes are fixed. Suzy Bulmer of Spalding Travel shares some tips with us on booking the right honeymoon and organising an overseas wedding

Have You Thought About Getting Married Abroad? You’ve set the date, so what happens next when marrying abroad? Choose your perfect wedding location whether it is short haul, long haul or a cruise. Once this is booked ( booking early for your wedding is always best advice if you’re able) your requested wedding date will be booked. Generally the minimum duration is three working days from the arrival date at your destination. This time allows you to meet with your wedding planner to make sure all the arrangements are to your liking and to add any optional extras you may require which can only be completed once in resort. Once your wedding is booked you will then receive a Wedding Pack which is full of information, including optional extras such as hairstyling for the bride, button holes and bridal bouquet, spa treatments, fireworks, horse & carriage and much more…! You can choose whether to marry on a beach, a pier lit with lanterns at sunset - the options are endless. Only if you choose to marry on a cruise will the ceremony be in a stipulated venue by the cruise company.

Your wedding is a once in a lifetime event, a day truly to be remembered forever. You can make your wedding in paradise, wherever that may be, truly bespoke and magical, the choice is endless…….

Planning Your Honeymoon? Your honeymoon is just as important as your wedding day, therefore it should be the trip of a lifetime with wonderful memories! There are so many travel providers offering unforgettable honeymoons to suit every couple from romantic intimate destinations to thrilling cities and even adventure safaris. ‘The World is your Oyster’ as destinations range from short haul such as Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Malta to further afield destinations such as Mauritius, The Seychelles, The Far East, USA & Canada, Africa and the beautiful Caribbean Islands. Planning your honeymoon in advance is always the best advice. Giving yourselves more time will enable you to choose the destination of your dreams. With so many to choose from budget is a major factor, but once this is agreed the planning becomes easy. Whether you choose to stay in Goa for its beautiful beaches or the home of the goddess of love, Cyprus, the options range from friendly self catering apartments to luxury 5* hotels. Travel providers do include special honeymoon offers which may range from wine and flowers in your room, free room upgrades and free nights (ie 10 for the price of 7). Depending on your choice of destination there may be other important factors to address such as passports, visas and vaccinations. Best advice for vacciantions is to contact your GP. Passports generally must have at least six months validity beyond your return date. A booklet issued by the Department of Health entitled ‘ Health advice for travellers’ is very useful. To conclude, there is a great range of destinations and accommodation to suit all budgets for that Special Honeymoon! For more advice and guidance on honeymoons or getting married abroad contact Suzy on 01755 714627.

Whether it’s starting a ballet class at 3 years old or looking for a dance class to enhance your fitness into your retirement, often the first place to start is finding local dance schools or classes and seeing what takes your fancy. There are also many resources online that will give you a flavour of what your chosen type of dance is all about (and how tricky it is to learn!) Many dance schools offer free taster sessions or one or two lessons on a pay as you go basis so you can try it out and see if it really is for you. If you find that you are suited to a particular type of dance then all that is left for you to do is to buy a pair of dancing shoes and off you go! If you find that it’s not what you expected then don’t give up, there will be something out there that you feel comfortable with – at the end of the day if you enjoy something you will stick at it and the rewards will come when you see improvements in your technique and general health. Ballet is often the place where everyone starts as a child and is now more popular than ever with boys. From there children take up more forms of dance and follow the discipline they prefer most – tap, disco, street dance. More and more women are now taking up ballet in their adulthood and realising that you don’t have to be overly fit and flexible to enjoy it and there are the benefits associated with learning ballet technique. Best of all, when learning ballet as an adult no leotards are required! Comfortable clothing will be all you need. Ballroom dancing is a very social form of dance which requires a partner; however many classes give you the opportunity to “mix and match” and work with a variety of partners. The term “ballroom” encompasses many dances from the tango to the waltz and it has enjoyed a recent boom with the popularity of programmes like Strictly Come Dancing.

38

Street dance is very popular with younger dancers but can be picked up at any time. Perhaps the biggest ambassadors for street dance are Britain’s Got Talent finalists Flawless, who have gone on to enjoy phenomenal success touring the country and showing off their talents. Another form of dance which all ages can enjoy is Zumba and this can always be found locally. It is worth trying several different classes before deciding which is right for you as some Zumba instructors place emphasis on the dance aspect

and others push the exercise aspect. A Zumba class can vary hugely between two instructors so a little trial and error is required. Zumba classes often have a real party atmosphere and all ages and abilities attend as it is so easy to pick up. So the best advice if you are thinking of taking up dance, at any age, is to just dive right in and try as much as you can until you see what feels right. Above all, have fun and enjoy the benefits that come with a hobby that has the positive side effect of keeping you fit!

Motoring By Tim Barnes-Clay

www.t witter.com/carwriteups

Aston Martin’s newest stablemates: Virage and Vantage S Aston Martin is one of the coolest automotive brand names on the planet, so getting a chance to drive one of the beautifully crafted cars from the British motor manufacturer has to be on the wish list of many. Well, luckily (and I don’t want to sound boastful) my wish came true very recently. I was invited to the home of Aston Martin, at Gaydon in Warwickshire, to sample not one, but two of the newest models on the block - the Virage and the Vantage S. Were they glorious, exquisite and powerful? Of course they were. Here’s an overview of both cars: The Virage combines outright sports car performance with opulence, comfort and refinement. It sits between the elegant DB9 and overtly sporting DBS, resulting in a car that remains luxurious and understated but capable of delivering increased athleticism that is always accessible for effortless driving. Aston Martin’s revered hand-built 6.0 litre V12 engine produces 490bhp and 420 lb/ft of torque and is mated to a six-speed Touchtronic II automatic transmission. This contributes to the Virage’s refined power delivery making gear changes tangible yet effortless. Aiding driver control, a ‘Sport’ button on the facia allows you to select a sharper throttle response and faster gear changes. Also, a newly developed adaptive damping system intelligently ‘reads’ the road to provide optimum road holding, adapting to different conditions. And if you want to scrub off speed quickly in the Virage, you can; it comes with carbon ceramic brakes as standard, offering progressive and tremendous stopping power. The magnificent machine sits low and wide, asserting the power which lies beneath. As you open the swan wing doors, you are greeted by the aroma of seven hides of the finest leather expertly hand stitched by craftsmen. Simplicity runs throughout the car with an integrated satellite navigation system that has been developed in conjunction with Garmin. Contributing to the feeling of luxury, finely polished glass buttons adorn the facia inviting you to select your desired setup or control. Aston Martin’s design team have stayed true to the ethos of using material honestly where facias are real hand finished, polished woods, dials are milled aluminium, and leathers retain their sheen and

40

aroma years into their life. In coupe form, the Virage is available as a 2+2 or a 2+0 as an option, the latter providing a rear parcel shelf ideal for soft bags, while also reducing weight. Another new member of the Aston Martin family is the V8 Vantage S. The ‘S’ is the most significant outward indication that the car is different to the already acclaimed Vantage. Basically, the engineering team at Gaydon looked at every single performance attribute of the standard model, from engine and transmission to suspension, steering, brakes and tyres, and considered what was required to make this car deserving of the coveted ‘S’ badge. The result is a pure driver-focussed package that exploits and emphasises the sporting nature of the iconic Vantage. The 4.7 litre V8 engine has been modified to deliver peak power of 430bhp at 7200rpm and torque of 361lb/ft at 5000rpm, representing an increase of 10bhp and 14.75lb/ft respectively. In addition, the car features a new automated manual seven speed gearbox. It is one of the best features of the car because it enhances the acceleration feel and gives you increased control. Driver interaction with the gearbox is made as simple as possible to allow you to concentrate on the road ahead. Two columnmounted paddles allow an up or a down shift through the gears, and you can always locate them with ease no matter what position the steering wheel is in. As well as selecting gears manually with the paddle-shift, you are also able to select the ‘D’ button on the facia to engage automatic mode. This acts like a traditional automatic gearbox changing gear at precisely the right time, making light work of urban traffic and motorway driving. But the Vantage S’ sporting character really comes into its own when the ‘Sport’ button on the facia is depressed; It gives you faster gear changes and it prevents the car changing up to the next gear when the revolution limit is reached. The default ‘normal’ provides a more progressive throttle response suited to more everyday situations. The Vantage S also features a unique exhaust muffler specifically tuned to aurally define its sporting intent. In ‘Sport’ mode the car produces a wonderful crackle. It’s a sound that is utterly magnificent.

Step inside and the tailored Vantage S’ cabin hints at the car’s dynamic capabilities, defined by a distinctive three-track stitch detail on the doors and on the seats. A folded leather design runs along the stitched tracks, echoing the gills of a shark. And, needless to say, the sumptuous seats cosset you, providing support during spirited driving while remaining comfortable on long journeys. The Vantage S coupe is hand built alongside the Virage at Aston Martin’s global headquarters in good old Blighty. Each car has a unique character, and it is very difficult to say which is better. From a cost point of view the Vantage S is much cheaper but, price-tags aside, you’d really struggle to turn any one of these beautiful British beasts away.

shop smart, shop local Shopping local saves you money Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us all that sole traders = expensive, but the evidence just isn’t there to back this up . If you add in travel, parking costs, fees to transport larger items home and your time, the overall cost is often much higher. Shopping locally retains our community People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns and villages but don’t equate this to how they spend their money. Shops will only survive if customers spend locally – so if you want a vibrant town centre, where people can socialise as well as shop, shop locally. Shopping local retains our distinctiveness Many town centres in Britain look the same with franchises and multinationals. Our independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Independent shops keep traditional local products alive. Oscar’s Outings Hello, I am Oscar. I am a Jack Russell who loves to explore the local area. I spend my weekends sniffing out the best places for walks, picnics and days out that are both dog and family friendly. Each month I will be sharing with you what I have been up to over the past month and my favourite place to visit. During the summer most of my weekends have centred around beach or country walks with a picnic, as my owners and I love to enjoy the beautiful weather and make the most of it. One of the best places I have found was WellsNext-Sea and Holkham, on the North Norfolk Coast. Holkham has something for everyone – there is the Estate you can look around, the pine woods to explore but I love the freedom

42

www.t witter.com/oscaradventures of walking and walking and walking to reach the sea. I love a paddle but swimming is something I avoid, wet fur is a real pain as the sand all sticks to me. A huge expanse of beach means we never feel too close to anyone families can play cricket whilst us dogs can burn off all our excitement. Nearby is Wells-Next-Sea if you fancy fish and chips (I love fish but am not so keen on the chips!), or trying your hand at crabbing off the harbour wall. If you are making a day of it, why not take a trip along the coast on The North Norfolk Railway? The railway is a preserved steam railway connecting the town of Sheringham to the picturesque Georgian town of Holt, both ends of the line are about a 20 minute drive from Holkham and even dogs are allowed on to enjoy

the fun! I had never seen a steam train before, they are noisy but once I got used to that I really enjoyed my sightseeing trip, I even got a window seat! With summer gone and Autumn here, next month we will be packing our flasks and rain coats and finding new places to explore

Woof, Woof! X For more information on Holkham Estate visit www.holkham.co.uk or on The North Norfolk Railway visit www.nnrailway.co.uk.
