Welcome to the November edition of Simply Holbeach

October has been all about the birthdays for me, my calendar is jam packed with them and doesn’t my purse know about it! So for me I am pleased to be heading towards November but this does mean we are not far away from Christmas and unusually I am getting myself organised and have already got a few presents bought....but not quite wrapped! This issue is jam packed full with news of what is happening in and around Holbeach. We take a look at Weston & Weston Hills as well as local businesses OK Catering and Pledgers. Of course there are all the new features too. I have finally given in and had to turn the heating on at home and at the office - it’s always a nerve-wracking moment, if the system has made it through the winter! For advice and tips on keeping warm this winter turn to page 35. To keep updated with advice, recipes and what’s on locally visit There’s even a for sale section, so you may pick up a bargain too! If you would like to get in touch then please email or call me on 0845 676 9295; we always appreciate your feedback and questions.

The Rotary Club of Holbeach Summer 2011

The Fenland Flywheelers Programme Of Monthly Social Evenings

The Fenland Flywheelers Autumn/ Winter programme of monthly social evenings held at the United Services Club in Church Street, Holbeach started this year on Wednesday October 12. These meetings are usually held on the first Wednesday of every month from October through to March. The Rotary Club of Holbeach has been busy with various projects in the community this summer. Club members recently worked with the Pride in Holbeach team to plant purple crocuses in Carters Park. They were also accompanied by Bethanie Hayes and Alice Tinn who Rotary is supporting on a forthcoming trip to Africa to undertake charity work. The purple crocus symbolises the ink put on children’s fingers when they are immunised against Polio in India and other countries where this terrible disease is still present. Rotary works closely with the World Health Organisation and the Bill Gates Foundation to implement this programme. The club has also pledged money

towards an all weather surface for the Goal Force area in the park. A smaller donation has been made to help the Holbeach and Fenland Gymnastics Club kit out their new premises in Long Sutton and upgrading of the electrics at the Brownie hut in Holbeach is underway. The proceeds of a successful Last Night of the Proms event will be helping towards community projects. The next event is a wine tasting with Amps Fine Wines at Spalding Primary School on Friday 25th November. Look out for posters around the town for details. If you are interested in finding out more about Rotary please visit the Clubs web site at or phone the secretary on 07850 602087.

Aeroclub Marks 40 Years

A display of memorabilia and photographs is among the special events being planned to mark the 40th anniversary of Fenland Aeroclub.

The club held its first open day to which the public could come and see what was on offer and on November 11, 1972 with flight training in a Jodel aircraft at £6.75 per hour, and to mark the club’s Ruby Jubilee committee

The meetings were started by Robb Thorpe just over ten years ago who realised there was nothing in the area to go along to of a winter’s evening in the Holbeach area with a universal interest involving speakers and enthusiasts from near and far that cover a vast range of subject matter and attract audiences ranging from 30 to 70 people per evening, male and female plus teenagers depending on the subject matter but all this is brought about with no real ‘committee’ other than a group of friends all ‘doing their bit’ to run it and ten years on, it still works! The meetings are held in the Function Suite of the United Services Club with free admittance with the doors open at 7-00pm. with a break for light refreshments and usually end about 10-00pm.

This coming Season’s events are as listed below. Wednesday Oct. 12th. Ron Cooke ‘Memories of the D-Day Landings’ plus other WW2 memories. Wednesday November 2nd. - Sue Cadman - ‘Remembering The Roly Poly’s’ - Sue was a member of comedian Les Dawson’s famous dance troupe. John Hayes Visits Wrights Mews South Holland and The Deepings M P, John Hayes, visits the newly redeveloped Wrights Mews site, off Park Road, Holbeach, which includes two brand new Units; on Friday 14th. October 2011.

Farmer Technology and Language College. Meanwhile it looks likely that the other new Unit has been let, subject to contract, and will then create more employment for the site and Holbeach.

This redevelopment scheme was made possible with grant funding from the Wash Fens Rural Development Programme with the two new Units replacing old redundant buildings.

John Hayes met with new and existing tenants. ‘When you first start a business you need units that are affordable, which is what this development provides. Wrights Mews has provided the affordable and accessible start needed by independent traders - it’s a fantastic development.’

One of the new Units has already been taken by The Solar Specialists Ltd., a new business run by Colin Lanning and William Miller, who are already employing three local subcontractors and hope to employ more staff in the future.

Steward Wright commented: ‘It’s all about getting a bit more life into Holbeach. The development has a welcoming feel for residents.’

On another employment plus for the Site; Accountants, Bulley Davey, who took an existing Unit just over a year ago have increased their staff with the addition of a Trainee Accountant, Ryan Thompson, an ex pupil of the George

Katie Hudson who works as Clarins Counter Manager in Spalding Department store Hills was presented with her award at a prestigious ceremony the Savoy Hotel in London recently. Katie was nominated for the Pure Beauty Magazine Award for the best department store beauty consultant and won through to the final where she was up against consultants from Hoopers Department Stores and Harrods. After a short-listing process in the weeks leading up to the final, Katie was put through her paces by industry experts but had a little fun on the way. Katie says “part of the final judging, as a diversion from the world of beauty all the finalists were asked to work in Jamie Oliver’s restaurant designing and producing a cocktail. It was great fun and very different from my day to day job”

THE 11th annual Spalding Pumpkin Festival was hailed a resounding success after an evening glowing with fun and sparkling with fireworks. Hundreds of youngsters and many in their senior years were kitted out in pumpkin fashion, the Sheep Market was thriving with stalls and nearby shops were bedecked in pumpkin paraphenalia.

Up to 10,000 people in total took part in the festival during the whole day with between 1,500 and 2,000 joining the parade and an estiimated crowd of between 6,000 and 8,000 joining the event in the evening. Food, fancy dress, pumpkin carving, entertainment including music and drama were all part of thrilling itinerary of entertainment.

The result of the final was not announced until the ceremony itself, where Katie found herself in the company of celebrities including Katie Price and Callum Best. Hills Managing Director Darryl Simpson who attended the event with Katie said “ we are absolutely thrilled that Katie has been recognised in this way. We feel we have excellent people working on the business, but for Katie to win a national award ahead of iconic retailers like Harrods is really something” Will this change Katie’s life? Well maybe in the future, but for now after a night out in London and a day’s shopping in the West End with her MD, it was back to what Katie loves best - spending time with her customers on the Clarins Counter at Hills.

South Holland District Council Deputy Leader Councillor Nick Worth said: “This was a real treat for all the family to enjoy. A celebration of the harvest and all that is good in South Holland.” Grower David Bowman is the UK’s biggest producer of pumpkins, producing more than two million every year to supply supermarkets up and down the country. He gives away hundreds of pumpkins away at the festival every year.

Teenagers have now also formed a committee to fundraise for a skatepark similar to the one in Spalding. The skatepark will not be on the Community centre field, but in a location yet to be determined. Realistically the project will take up to 18 months to raise the £100,000 plus required. “Save the sorting office in Holbeach” cards have and are still being distributed around the town and surrounding villages. If you really want to have a chance of saving the sorting office then please do complete the card with your name and address and send it back or hand it in at Holbeach Parish Council, 11 West End, Holbeach. If it closes we will have to go to Spalding to get undelivered post and I will be doing my best to ensure the service stays in Holbeach. Somewhat controversially a new teenage shelter equipped with Bluetooth technology, that allows music to be played from your mobile phone and also lights up the shelter through physically turning the handles on a generator, has been installed on the playing field off Damgate Road. A steel litter bin will also be installed shortly, but in the meantime a number of volunteers are picking up any litter from the site. It is clearly well used and a much needed facility for the young people of Holbeach.

The idea is that volunteers in groups of two or three under guidance from the police, can be trained to use speed guns around their local community. Offenders caught speeding will receive official warning letters from the Police and other action could be taken for repeat offenders. Advice - Tips To Avoid A Debt Hangover! by Diane Clay

Christmas is a time of giving, but you don’t want to give yourself a headache in the New Year with bills and debts you can’t afford. It’s all too easy to overspend – there are tempting offers and pressures to buy, but you must decide how much you can afford before you start spending.

2 Don’t Forget The Everyday Bills Remember that rent, the mortgage, council tax, utility bills, food bills and other existing debts still have to be paid – and the consequences can be severe if they’re not. Even though it’s Christmas, get your priorities right.

8 Do Your Own Credit Checks If you are going to use a credit card, shop around and compare terms. Some cards charge high interest rates, but provide interest free periods or discounts. Budget for all these costs and put the payment dates in your diary.

3 Don’t Bank On An Overdraft If you do need more money, don’t just run up an overdraft without talking to your bank first – it will work out much more expensive.

9 Be Organised There’s a lot to remember at Christmas. If you’ve borrowed money don’t forget that it won’t be long before you have to make a payment. Make sure you pay on time, even if it is only the minimum, or you will be faced with additional charges.

4 Keep Things Simple If you can afford to pay for your goods outright by cash, cheque, or debit card, don’t be persuaded to take out extended credit agreements unless they really do work out cheaper. 5 Shop Around Try as many different places as possible to find the best price. Buy what you want and not what other people say you need. Be wary of extended warranties; the cost of a repair could be less than the cost of the warranty.

Follow our tips for avoiding a Christmas debt hangover: 1 Plan Early For Christmas Be realistic and budget accordingly. Work out how much you are going to spend on each person – and stick to it. Manage expectations as to what you or Santa can give.

6 Buy Safe To Be Safe Whatever the deal, whatever the temptation, don’t buy from unauthorised traders and don’t borrow from unauthorised lenders. The initial savings and convenience may prove to be a false economy. 7 Read The Small Print If you do decide to take credit, check for hidden extras in any credit agreement. Work out the total amount payable. Ensure that the monthly instalments are within your budget before signing. Interest free credit can seem attractive, but if you don’t pay on time, or miss a payment, you could have to pay a lot more.

10 Start Planning And Saving For Next Christmas! Once Christmas is over, it’s worth looking at what you did well and what you didn’t. Learn from your mistakes and start planning how you will do things differently next year. This might also be a good time to start saving for next Christmas. Saving For Christmas The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has produced a guide to help you work out the best way to save for Christmas. The guide gives you a description of the different savings options available, including: • bank and building society savings accounts • Christmas clubs with local shops • Christmas hamper and voucher schemes • supermarket stamp schemes. There is also a chart which lets you compare all the different options. To view the information, go to: www.consumerdirect. or call 08454 04 05 06. Some bigger Christmas clubs belong to the Christmas Prepayment Association (CPA). These clubs pay the money they get from their customers into a special fund which offers protection for the customer. You can find out more by going to the CPA website at: Planning, budgeting and organisation are key to avoid getting into debt at Christmas and beyond. If your spending runs out of control, you can soon find that debt is not only a problem at Christmas, but can become a way of life. School News Holbeach St Marks The building work is now completed after lots of hard work during the summer. Our pre-school, which is called Little Lions, is now up and running in our new pre-school room. The children are really enjoying the lovely new space they have and making lots of use of the doorway through to the outdoor area. Everywhere has been redecorated and is light and airy. Our numbers on roll continue to grow and we are very excited about the opportunities in the village for our pre-schoolers! We offer 15 free, funded hours for children who have turned three as well as very reasonable rated for children the term before they are three.

We are also using our lovely new space to hold a twice weekly mums, babies and toddlers group. The group meets on a Tuesday and Friday afternoon 12.45-2.45. All are very

The school will be holding an opening ceremony and church service later in November to celebrate. We always welcome visitors to our school so please feel free to come and see us.

The main school has also had a revamp! We have built a new classroom which the children love, as well as a new group work area, offices and work space. Existing rooms have also been thoroughly re decorated and are bright and cheerful. Our new fence will open up the school to the village and finish off our renovations perfectly.

Weston St Mary Our school has been busy learning about Africa this term. We have had a very enjoyable African Drumming workshop. Class 2 went on an ‘African Live’ trip to Lowestoft. Africa Live is described as an awe inspiring recreation of the African Savannah, where animals roam freely together as they would in the wild. The children had the opportunity to get close up to the animals and discover the sights, sounds and smells of the world’s most vibrant and exciting continent. As part of the day, the children rode on the safari road train which had commentary of the African savannah as part of the tour. They also took part in an African adventure workshop where they became

explorers and tracked the wildlife of the forests, savannahs and deserts. They even got to touch some of them. Following the trip the children took what they had learned back to the classroom and did some project based work.

parents to come along and join their children for lunch. Everyone enjoyed it. We would like to pass on thanks to Food for Thought for all their hard work and making it all possible

Bishop Tim of Lincoln came to visit our Weston school. The children were delighted in showing him around our school. He gave a very interesting assembly which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

Children in year 5 and 6 went to a Tag Rugby event at Spalding Rugby club where they took part with lots of other local primary schools. It was a very successful day.

12th October was Roast Dinner Day. All our children had the chance to have a free roast dinner and we asked

The 20th October is our Come Celebrate day at Weston Church at 2.15 where the African theme will still be present and the children will be singing some African songs.

We have classes running is Spalding, Bourne, Market Deeping and many other areas nearby and are having triple the fun in one of our sessions with our 3rd set of twins joining the same class. As well as singing along to nursery rhymes and action songs, our bubble machine, hobby

horses, pom poms, finger puppets, floaty scarves and hand puppets have been joined by new props this term and we launched a prize giveaway on our Music Bugs Lincolnshire Facebook page which will run every month. Ceilidhs have proved very successful over the summer giving another dance opportunity for adults in Holbeach and the surrounding villages. The ceilidhs continue to attract people who want a taste of something new or to try and improve their fitness. Alex Law from LD said: “There is probably no better way to exercise if you enjoy dancing and music!” The ceilidhs are brought to Holbeach by Lincolnshire Dance and the Dance4Life programme, which is funded through the ‘Health and Wellbeing Fund’, a partnership between Lincolnshire County Council and Lincolnshire NHS and gives local focus to the government’s Change4Life initiative. Dance4Life aims to improve the health and wellbeing of adults through quality dance opportunities. The Holbeach Ceilidhs take place on the first Monday of every month, so the next dance takes place on 7th November from 7pm until 9.30pm at the WI Hall on Park Road. One of three folk bands, ‘The Waggonload of Monkeys’ ‘Akmed’s Camel’ or ‘The Beltonas’ will be playing live. A traditional caller will be on hand to talk you through the moves! Just drop in and give it a go! Light refreshments are included. Spotlight on Weston & Weston Hills by Kate Tarrant This month we take a step back in time to look at the villages of Weston and Weston Hills in the past – two communities bustling with life and activity. Importantly, Weston, or Weston St Mary as it’s officially known, is also a parish - and within this parish is the village of Weston Hills, which has its own small church called Weston St John’s. When visiting Weston, it’s impossible not to miss its magnificent limestone church. In the Lincolnshire volume of the King’s England, St Mary’s is described as an elegant example of a thirteenth century building. It is of cruciform construction - built in the shape of a cross. Kelly’s Directory of 1937 describes the church as being in the ‘Transition, Early English and later styles.’ The nave, together with the clerestory and the south porch, are circa 1160; the chancel is circa 1280 with the aisles dating from about 1380. The north and south transepts (traverse sections) are recorded as being added circa 1350 and 1360.

Spalding with the North Norfolk coast. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1959 and the line closed in 1965. Many readers might remember the site better as Fred Street’s car dismantling yard.

Restoration projects were carried out on parts of the church in 1858 and 1863. It was during 1863 that a new roof was placed over the chancel. In 1885-6, the church was again restored - this time by J L Pearson, with reconstructions costing £2,071. Weston Station Weston Station was located on Broadgate, a mile or so south of the village. The station was on the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway, which connected

Did you know?

• There were once three Methodist chapels in the parish of Weston. One was built in 1844 in Weston village, and at Weston Hills there were two: built in 1813 and 1854. Now there are no longer any Methodist chapels in the parish. • In 1931, the population of the parish of Weston was recorded as being just 1,124. • Kelly’s Directory of 1937 records the parish as being 7,624 acres of land and inland water. • The register of St Mary’s dates from 1678.

Reading Corner

by Marion Brown of Holbeach Library

Relentless by Simon Kernick

November Highlights

If you have not read a Simon Kernick novel before then the best advice is not to start reading it at bedtime. You will either be up all night reading or won’t be able to sleep thinking about the fast paced story. Relentless is a very apt title for this story of John Meron an IT sales team leader gets caught up in a terrifying ordeal when he answers the phone one Saturday afternoon and hears the frantic cries for help of a friend who is being attacked. It is clear that Meron is the ultimate target of the gang but why and can he escape and save his family. It is unputdownable as are the other books by the same author.

On Thursday 10th November local Health Trainer Theresa Lewis will be in the library from 10am to 1pm to give advice and support on how to lead a healthier lifestyle. The service is free of charge and focuses on how small changes can make a big difference to your life. For more information Theresa can be contacted on 07532236616.

The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson Julia Donaldson the current Children’s Laureate writes wonderful rhyming picture book stories for young children which are ideal for reading out loud. A particular favourite with storytime visitors The Snail and the Whale is the story of a tiny snail who hitches a ride around the world on the back of a great big, grey-blue humpback whale. The illustrations are wonderful with mountainous seas, icebergs and tropical coves along the way. As in the best of stories there is a reversal of roles when the snail manages to save the whale who is stranded on a beach. The story is ideal for children up to school age but older ones enjoy the drama of it too.

r e n r o C s ’ t Pe Keeping pets Autumn sound! So we’ve arrived at the heart of Autumn; the air is cooling, the crisp mornings are taking over and the leaves are beginning to turn on the trees. Whilst we wish the summer had continued the Autumn is the perfect time for your pet, temperatures are cooler and the number of sticks to fetch and leaves to bound through is plentiful. But beware! Autumn is also a time of lurking dangers for our furry friends. From household poisons to cold weather hazards, the season is a minefield.

Training tip: If you and your pooch haven’t been active outdoors in a while because of the summer heat, do some remedial recall training. Dogs, like people, get rusty on their skills if they aren’t using them.

Here are some tips to keep your pet snug and healthy during the Autumn months.

Poison The use of rodenticides increases during the Autumn as rodents seek shelter from the cooler temperatures by attempting to move indoors. Rodenticides are highly toxic to pets. If ingested, the results could be fatal. If you must use these products, do so with extreme caution and put them in places inaccessible to your pets.

Pesky children For those of you with young children, while the school term is in full flow you’ll be stocked up on fun items like glue sticks, pencils and magic markers. These items are considered “low toxicity” to pets, which means they’re unlikely to cause serious problems unless large amounts are ingested. However, since gastrointestinal upset and blockages certainly are possible, be sure your children keep their school supplies out of paw’s reach.

23 High Street, Spalding PE11 1TX Tel: 01775 713005 20

Not always a Funghi The Autumn season is mushroom season. While 99% of mushrooms have little or no toxicity, the 1% that are highly toxic can cause life-threatening problems in pets. Unfortunately, most of the highly toxic mushrooms are difficult to distinguish from the nontoxic ones, so the best way to keep pets from ingesting poisonous mushrooms is to keep them away from areas where any mushrooms are growing. Contact your veterinarian or the RSPCA immediately if you witness your pet eating a wild mushroom

A life outdoors In order to generate body heat, pets who exercise heavily outdoors, or who live outdoors, should be given more food during colder seasons. Make sure horses and other outdoor animals have access to clean, fresh water that is not frozen.

Training Autumn is a great season to train your dog or puppy. With the cooler weather, there’s less worry about heat exhaustion, and there are plenty of sights, sounds and smells for you and your dog to experience.

There is no better time than Autumn to practice your dog or puppy’s self-control with distractions. Obedience training is the key to enjoying overall good behavior from your dog, and there is no better time than Autumn to practice your dog or puppy’s self-control with distractions. Scampering squirrels, crunchy leaves, tempting sticks and kids playing ball are all common distractions your dog can learn to listen to you in spite of.

Watch the freeze Many people choose the Autumn as the time to change their car’s engine coolant. Ethylene glycol-based coolants are highly toxic, so spills should be cleaned up immediately. Consider switching to propylene glycol-based coolants— though they aren’t completely nontoxic, they are much less toxic than other engine coolants. Just a few drops ingested and the results can be fatal!

Warning: Antifreeze can be fatal!

Remember, pets won’t be aware of the dangers themselves. They are likely to stumble across these hazards without even knowing their danger. As responsible owners, it pays to be aware of the risks. Simple precautionary measures will keep your furry friends safe and sound. Just the way they should be.  SIMPLY HOLBEACH  21 20

(cover and leave overnight to marinate) 2 - Sift flour and spice in another bowl, add ground almonds, sugar, butter or margarine, add beaten eggs and mix well, then beat for about two minutes until smooth and glossy. 3 - Fold in the fruit mixture until evenly blended. 4 - Spoon the mixture into a lined tin, and give the tin a few sharp bangs to level the mixture and remove any air pockets. 5 - Bake in a pre-heated oven 140’c / gas mark 1 for 2hrs 15mins. Test the cake to see if cooked 15mins before the end of cooking time. 6 - Once cooked leave the cake in tin until cold, then turn the cake out. 7 - Wrap cake in tin foil and store in a cool place. 8 - Put some pin holes in the cake and feed with a splash of whichever alcohol was used . (once a week for about 3 weeks)

Moules Marinière

Serves 2 Mussels are great value and there’s nothing better than sitting down to a huge bowlful, and mopping up the sauce with chunks of baguette. Ingredients 25g butter 2 shallots or 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 bay leaf 2 stalks of fresh parsley 150ml dry white wine 1kg mussels in shell, scrubbed and beards removed 4 tbsp crème fraîche handful chopped fresh parsley freshly ground black pepper Method 1 - Melt the butter in a large heavy saucepan, add the onion and cook gently for 5 minutes until tender, but not coloured. Add the garlic, bay leaf and parsley stalks and cook for a further minute. 2 - Pour in the wine and bring to a rapid boil. Add the mussels, all at once, and immediately cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid. Cook over a medium heat, shaking the pan occasionally for 3–5 minutes until the mussels have opened. Discard the bay leaf, parsley stalks and any mussels that have not opened. 3 -Strain the cooking juices through a fine-meshed sieve into a small saucepan. Add the crème fraîche and 1 1/2 tbsp of the chopped parsley and boil for a minute or two to reduce slightly. Season to taste with black pepper. 4 - Meanwhile, transfer the mussels to a warmed serving dish or individual bowls. Pour over the hot sauce, sprinkle with the remaining parsley and serve straight away.  SIMPLY HOLBEACH  23 22

Mum Knows Best... by Theresa Geeson Is it just me, or do all parents feel awful when they have to find sitters for the children whilst they swan off to ‘enjoy’ themselves? Now we generally are very much of the school of thought that we will spend time as a family and rarely go out without our five year old daughter Abigail. If I have a day or night planned with friends and I know hubby will be in charge as they both enjoy and benefit from their time together but when we both are out it is a completely different matter, I am all of a panic and guilt ridden. I recently had a hen weekend in London and I was relaxed as I knew Abigail was really looking forward to weekend with Dad and without mum, but as usual, all best laid plans...and of course the guilt kicked in. It was manic phone calls to friends a couple of days before to ‘palm’ our daughter onto friends. Abigail of course took it in her stride, in fact I would go so far as to say that she thoroughly enjoyed her weekend – it’s always full of treats when friends look after her. Time with Mum

and Dad must be comparatively boring! My whole weekend was spent texting and checking she was OK, which of course she was. I thought I would be over any separation anxiety issues, but does this ever go away? I can imagine feeling similar when she is 18! When I returned I was open armed and expecting a ‘mummy I’ve missed you!’ with a big hug and a kiss, the reality was - I received a passing ‘hi mamma’ as she proceeded with her game with her friend. Absolutely gutted, when I had spent my weekend feeling guilty and missing Abiagil so much! The only thing I got out of Abigail was delightfully informing me that the highlight of her visit was seeing a ‘dead’ cat at Ayschoughfee Hall Gardens (taxidermy isn’t part of the vocabulary of a five year old!). All in all it appeared that I had missed out on a fun filled weekend! Still, there’s our family weekend away at Butlin’s to look forward to soon...

Rising Farm Crime Prompts Extreme Security Measures UK farmers are going to extreme lengths to protect themselves from theft as criminal activity on farms increases.

Agricultural theft costs the UK farming industry £48M last year, up from £41M in 2009, with tools, tractors, heating oil and fuel topping the list of targeted items. However, through good housekeeping and robust anti-crime tactics, farms can minimise the threat from theft and more importantly could help reduce their farm insurance premiums by showing insurers that good preventative measures are in place to deter thieves. Ann Hempsall of national insurance broker Bluefin who have offices in Peterborough says, “Our advice to farm clients is always the same: improve your security and never be complacent with what you have in place. Security doesn’t have to be a major expense and through some robust management of equipment and livestock you can greatly reduce your chances of being targeted by thieves. There are also various security firms in operation for increased protection and sometimes this is the best measure. Your local crime prevention officer can also offer effective crime prevention advice. “Thieves will often make repeat visits once items have been replaced especially to farms which have inadequate security. Being caught twice could seriously affect the terms and premiums offered by insurers at next renewal. Insurers may increase premiums or amend terms after break-ins so it is very important that the farmer has made it as difficult as possible for thieves to gain access to steal from his premises. “If a farmer shows willing to reduce the possibility of crime on his farm, insurers could be more flexible with the terms and premiums they will impose at renewal. Insurers generally load premiums and place high excesses on vulnerable sections of a farm; therefore prevention is always the best policy. “Especially during periods of financial hardship, farmers cannot afford continual losses under their farm policies from theft which may result in

higher premiums. They should be seen to be putting into place effective preventative measures to deter theft on their farms, as it is the only way to beat crime, whilst helping to reduce insurance costs at the same time. ” Practical hints and tips which may help prevent crime on farms:

• Lock fuel tanks with quality locks or even re-site them in locked buildings • Lock away tools and equipment in secure workshops and tool cabinets with quality locks or grilles or even consider bricking up windows to prevent access • Keep All Terrain Vehicles/Quad Bikes in locked buildings and chained to a solid object. Do not leave them out in a yard on display as thieves with vehicles can easily pick them up • Agricultural vehicles should be put away at night in securely locked buildings and any keys removed • Install CCTV and consider other types of security protection such as infra-red beams fitted across yards or gateways which activate alarms if the beam is broken • Install an alarm system on obvious target buildings, workshops, riding tack stores and offices • Install a lockable bar gate at the entrance to the farm to prevent vehicle access • With farms where there is no house occupancy at night by either farmer or any employees, if tools or vehicles have to be stored on such sites then they should be items which can be replaced easily and with little cost. Isolated farms or those with no overnight occupancy are most likely to be targeted by thieves • Fit tracking devices to vehicles, particularly valuable tractors, so that items can easily be traced and recovered if stolen • Fit immobilisers to vehicles particularly valuable tractors to prevent items being driven away • Install data-tagging on agricultural machinery so if machinery is stolen from a farm it can be identified and returned back to its rightful owner • If possible keep livestock in locked gated fields in close proximity to the farmhouse and buildings • Buy a noisy farm guard dog which always acts as an effective deterrent

Martial Arts -All You Need to Know It’s often said that martial arts are the best way to shape up and kick your way to a less stressed life. We were tempted at the prospects, so have got the low down for you on some of the various forms martial arts can take. The American Council on Exercise - which sets the standards for fitness worldwide - recently reported that the average hour-long combat-style class burns 450 calories. If this kind of hardcore exercise suits you, there are plenty of martial arts classes to choose from in the local area. But which one is for you? Karate The English translation of the Japanese word Karate means ‘empty hand,’ a nod to the fact that karate teaches you to fight unarmed. Karate is a form of self-defense that relies on tremendous power from the legs and abdominal muscles. Most classes last over an hour and incorporate a full range of fitness disciplines from stretching to punching and kicking and once you’ve mastered the basics some sparring with a partner. You don’t have to be physically strong to take up Karate but your strength and overall muscle tone will improve if you keep up with the practice. The emphasis is on speedy footwork and quick reaction time, so agility, balance and coordination will also get better as will your cardiovascular fitness. Because Karate is a competitive sport it’s not generally run as a fitness class. However, beginners are welcome at Karate clubs, and if you like it you’ll be encouraged to work your way through the graded belt system. David Saint from Holbeach and Long Sutton Karate Club commented; “As time goes by, you soon find out that karate, like other martial arts, has hidden depths. It’s not just about keeping fit, or defending yourself. It’s also about developing confidence, discipline, and self-esteem. And along the way you make new friends, and have a laugh too. The whole family can take part, and learn together. You can travel to new places to train under the greatest karate masters in the world – the highest senior grades of the Japan Karate Association who come to England regularly to teach. In fact our very own Chief Instructor of the Japan Karate Association England, Sensei Ohta, 7th dan JKA, comes regularly to Lincolnshire to teach and to carry out grading examinations.” Ju Jitsu Ju-Jitsu loosely translated means “science of softness” or “gentle art” and is applied to many schools of unarmed and hand-to-hand combat. The soft grappling style was intended to help unarmed soldiers to fight against armed enemies in any way possible, using the least amount of force necessary. Ju-Jitsu was the primary unarmed combat method of the Samurai. The Ultimate Self Defence, armed and unarmed combat system. Many other Martial Arts are modern day descendents of Ju-Jitsu. Ju-Jitsu emphasizes turning an attacker’s own force

against him or herself, putting them off balance. Ju-Jitsu also emphasizes certain grappling moves and strikes to vital areas. A Ju-Jitsu student is expected to learn how to gauge the force of an opponent’s attack and use it against him, evade attacks, use leverage against an opponent and how to attack nerves and pressure points. The main goal in Ju-Jitsu practice is to cultivate a person’s mind and body: not to use it as a means to vent one’s anger, frustration or emotional problems. The use of force is condoned only in self-defense or in the defense of those who are defenseless. Kickboxing Although the true roots of kickboxing date back to Asia 2,000 years ago, modern competitive kickboxing actually started in the 1970s, when American karate experts arranged competitions that allowed fullcontact kicks and punches that had been banned in karate. Because of health and safety concerns, padding and protective clothing and safety rules were introduced into the sport over the years, which led to the various forms of competitive kickboxing practiced in the United States today. The forms differ in the techniques used and the amount of physical contact that is allowed between the competitors Taekwondo Taekwondo as a sport has over 60 million practitioners in 184 countries. It originates from South Korea where the world governing body, the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), is currently based. The modern form of Taekwondo was not agreed until 1955, but the sport has its roots in various Korean forms of martial arts stretching back more than 2,000 years. The name Taekwondo literally translates as the way of the foot and the fist - tae means to break or attack with the foot, kwon means to break with the fist and do translates as the art or way.

combat. Judo was established as a modern physical activity when in 1882; Professor Jigoro Kano founded his Kodokan Judo. Responsible for education he was aware that physical education in his country at that time was sadly lacking. Jealous ju-jitsu masters began to question this system and the matter could only be settled by arranging a tournament between the various schools. This was done in 1886 and the outcome was a totally victorious Kodokan. Japanese police officials had been watching the proceedings closely; they were looking for an acceptable method of apprehending and controlling aggressive law-breakers without resorting to weapons. To them Judo was the answer and it is used in Japanese police training to this day. From that time, Judo schools were established in many countries and the first Judo club to open in Europe, the Budokwai which still operates today, was founded in 1918 by Gunji Koizumi who became known later as “The Father of British Judo”. There are now nearly 1,000 Judo clubs registered with the British Judo Association in the United Kingdom.

Tai Chi Tai Chi has its origins in Taoism and Martial Arts. Tai Chi Chuan means “Supreme Ultimate Boxing.” At the time of its development, Tai Chi was a very potent art, jealously guarded by a few families and used for self defense. The proper shapes for the transmission of energy, the

methods of singleweightedness, techniques of relaxation and breath control all were developed with the express purpose of prevailing in combat in an efficient, scientific manner. www.t The change of season always leaves me with an itch, and not beacuse I get those creepy crawlies in my coat but because I have a skin allergy. Something which developed a couple of years ago it makes us have to think where we can visit at different times of the year. This month we visited Houghton Mill near St Ives (in Cambridgeshire, not Cornwall) which I will tell you about later but my favourite walk this month was to Ayscoughfee Hall Gardens. With the unusually nice weather in early October we got up early one Sunday morning and headed off to the local gardens. I live on the Wygate estate so it took about 20 minutes to get there and it is lovely seeing the

riverbank at that time of the day it is really peaceful and quiet as well as giving me the opportunity to run around and chase ducks! The cafe offers a real treat for breakfast if you can’t be bothered to cook and they are one of the kind places that has a dog water bowl. Us doggies love that at a cafe, nothing better than after a walk to slurp back some of the cool stuff. This month we also travelled a bit further afield to Houghton Mill. Situated in a stunning riverside setting and full of excellent handson activities for all the family, this five-storey historic building is the last working watermill on the Great Ouse. Flour is for sale, ground in the traditional way by water-powered mill stones too.

Oscar’s Outings is a neighbouring caravan site, so you can stay for a little longer and explore the area. Don’t forget that November means lots of fireworks, please keep your pets safe as we sometimes aren’t sure what all the noise is about and can get easily scared. Ask your vet or local pet store for more advice if you have nervous pets.

Woof, Woof! X

Whilst we didn’t go into the Mill we had a lovely pic nic nearby and walked for miles along the river. If you are a caravanner there

This is a fine example of farm diversification in its best sense. We were wise enough to realise that our farm buildings were decaying at a rather alarming speed and that they would not reach the rising standards of DEFRA and their colleagues, nor would it be cost effective to keep on and on maintaining them. So what makes our cottages special? All of our 8 properties are maintained where possible and managed within the family unit. They all have level access and low level Switches and sockets and mixed height units in the kitchen. They are simply but tastefully furnished with at least one roll-in access shower room. in every unit as well as a commode chair. Dogs and smokers are welcome.

home well; get financial help; eat well; get a flu jab; look after yourself and others. Lincolnshire Social Services distributes the guide to its 12 area offices across the county, day centres, libraries, churches, post offices, hospitals, Citizens Advice Bureaux, and to members of the public via home carers. Financial help There are grants available to help you with heating your home - the Energy Saving Trust is an impartial organisation and their experts can offer comprehensive advice on grants available to your home. You can also speak to your energy provider for current deals available. If you are over 60, disabled or on a low income, you may be able to get financial help to heat your home. For more information on schemes like cold weather payments and winter fuel payments visit and click on the link ‘Home and Community’ and then ‘Help with heating your home’.

You finally decide to switch on the heating, but all you can feel is draughts. Your heat is going out of your home and it feels like your money’s going down the drain. So what can you do? in Spalding explains solar energy:

As the nights get colder, we take a look at how you can keep your home warm – and the heat in!

‘Solar PV (electric) is generated by installing panels on your roof (or they can be ground mounted). The electricity produced is free to use and a payment of 43.3 pence per kilowatt is paid to you directly by your energy supplier just for generating it – whether you use it or not! Any surplus electric is sold back to the grid. As PV works on light not just direct sunshine, it generates even on cloudy days.

Keeping in the heat - Invest in good quality curtains; the thicker they are, the more heat you’ll keep in! - Make a draught excluder. They’re cheap and fun to make - and they will brighten up any room. - Loft insulation. According to the Energy Saving Trust, in an un-insulated home a quarter of your heat is lost through the roof. Now that’s a lot of heat to lose! Laying down loft insulation is a simple and cost-effective step to reducing your heating bills. It’s recommended that your loft has at least 10 - 11 inches of insulation. - Cavity wall insulation. If your home was built from 1920 onwards, it’s very likely that its outside walls are made of two layers with a small gap or ‘cavity’ between them. This means they are ‘cavity walls’. With cavity wall insulation the gap is filled which means it’s harder for your heat to escape through the walls. The Energy Saving Trust state if every UK household that is suitable for cavity wall insulation installed it, we could save around £690 million and nearly 4 million tonnes of CO2 every year! - Double glazing. The two panes of glass trap a layer of air - this layer of air acts as insulation, preventing loss of heat. - Hot water tank and pipe insulation - this is easy to do and it will keep your water hotter for longer by reducing the amount of heat that escapes. - Boiler - is your boiler efficient? Do you need a new boiler? Check out the ‘Heating and Hot Water Guide’ at www. Here experts will talk you through everything you need to know to make an informed choice whether you need advice on purchasing a new boiler, or help understanding how to decide when you need a new boiler. Remember: get your boiler serviced annually, and regularly shop around for better energy prices - research the market for your gas, electric and oil deals! Solar energy: the facts Phil Newbon from Solar Creations Ltd (

How can solar panels contribute to saving money and energy?

‘Solar Thermal (hot water heating) is created by flat plate or evacuated tube collectors being installed on your roof; a special fluid is pumped through the solar collector and returned to the hot water cylinder on a heat exchange basis. A typical install will give mostly free hot water heating from March to September and assist the hot water heating in winter. All new installations are eligible for a grant under the government’s new Renewable Heat Incentive. ‘ Did you know? ‘The name “Feed in Tariff” is slightly misleading as it’s actually a “Generation Tariff”. Yes, you are paid just over 3 pence per kilowatt for selling your excess electric back to the grid, but to generate it you are paid 43.3 pence per kilowatt!’ Log burners & fireplaces When it comes to looking at log burners and fireplaces, there is a wide choice available – whether you want something that’s efficient and practical or a fireplace that’s the centre piece to your home, or both! From wood burning stoves to multi-fuel stoves; from electric fires to gas fires – visit your local provider for some professional advice on where to get started. Awareness Lincolnshire County Council supports the Government’s annual ‘Keep Warm, Keep Well’ campaign, which aims to reduce coldrelated illnesses and deaths among the elderly and people with chronic illness. You can download a copy of their brochure from Direct Gov - simply click on the link ‘Staying Warm in Winter.’ The brochure is packed with practical advice on how to keep warm and well during the winter. You can read more about their top five tips for keeping warm this winter: Heat your

Energy Saving Week 2011 Energy Saving Week runs from 24th - 28th October. The theme for this year is ‘Take back control of your energy bills.’ You can download an information pack from the Energy Saving Trust to find out how you can reduce bills at home and in the workplace. Make Your Own Draught Excluders What you will need… A rectangular piece of material, at least 40cm wide and just a bit longer than the width of the door. No need to buy brand new material - you can use up old scraps to create a funky and fun draught excluder! Needle and thread, pins An old pair of tights Stuffing (beanbag balls, uncooked rice or lentils, old clothes cut up/old tights) What you need to do… 1. Fold your chosen material in half lengthways, so that any pattern your material has is on the inside, and pin it together. 2. Stitch up the length of the rectangle, as close to where the two edges meet as possible. 3. Turn the material inside out so you have a long cylinder that is open at both ends, with the patterned side of the material on the outside. Stitch together one of the ends so your stuffing does not fall out. 4. If you’re using beanbag balls, rice or lentils cut a leg off your tights and fill it with stuffing. When it’s full and just a little bit smaller than your draught excluder, tie a knot in the end. Insert the stuffed tight into your draught excluder and stitch the other end together. 5. If you’re using old clothes and old tights as stuffing (clean of course), you don’t need to put them into the tights as in step 4. Using old clothes is also a lot cheaper than using rice or lentils. Just push the clothes/tights into the cylinder and stitch the end up. With whichever type of stuffing you use, make sure you get enough of the filling into the draught excluder so that it is firm - this will stop draughts from getting through. You can keep your draught excluder simple - or you can get creative and add buttons, ribbons, braids. Children might like to make it into a snake!  SIMPLY HOLBEACH  35 34
