Welcome to the March edition of Simply Holbeach

February has been a month full of snow and ice - I am dreading my heating bill coming in later this year! But despite the difficulties the bad weather can cause, it looks magical and I don’t know about anyone else but as it was falling it looked gliterry to me?! Mar ch 1st is officially (according to the Met Office) the start of Spring - I’m not sure I agree but I am looking forward to the brighter days, and getting out in the garden to start work on my plans for the summer. Since Christmas it seems to have been one engagement party after another - the next couple of years are going to be filled with weddings for me. If you have got engaged recently or started to plan your wedding make sure you check out our 6 page guide from page 31. This issue is jam packed full with news of what is happening in and around Holbeach and of course there are all the usual regulars - Kids Corner, Oscar’s adventures and School News. Blood Bikes planning to  ride for Lincolnshire A volunteer group of motorcyclists have launched a campaign to raise awareness of what are commonly called ‘Blood Bikes’. Formed just before Christmas the Lincolnshire Emergency Blood Bike Service (LEBBS) plan to provide a free ‘out of hours’ emergency courier service for hospitals and healthcare facilities within Lincolnshire, transporting urgent medical items including blood, actively staffed by volunteers working to professional standards. So why provide such a service? Currently in such cases these products such as blood and organs are delivered by taxi or commercial courier, costing the NHS a substantial amount of money each year. On some occasions ambulances or police vehicles have to be used, taking them out of service for the duration. LEBBS wants to change this within Lincolnshire. Relying purely on donations from sponsors and the general public, this will enable more money to be released for use in NHS patient care. If you feel you can help support the group as a rider, events co-ordinator, and controller or want to become a fundraiser or donator to the cause then please contact the group. More information is available on www.LEBBS.org or you can email on info@lebbs.org. Alternatively you can call David Wraight, County Coordinator on 07963 689834. Talks and presentations can be given to interested parties and local groups.

Ayscoughfee Hall awarded Grade I status Historic Ayscoughfee Hall has been officially awarded Grade I status putting it among the crème de la crème of buildings across England. The hall, owned by the people of Spalding and managed by South Holland District Council, has taken the accolade following an inspection by English Heritage. Formerly graded as II*, the building, was first listed in 1950 and its grounds were listed as a historic park and garden in 1985 at grade II.

MSP87624_v2 • 0411 • B • DM

The hall, which has been a museum since 1986, was closed for major refurbishment and repair in 2003.

4

During refurbishment a considerable amount of information about the building’s history and development emerged, specifically in the age of the roof timbers which suggested that it was older than previously thought. This evidence was a key part in elevating the hall’s status. Of the 300,000 listed buildings in England only 2.5 per cent are classified as Grade I. Council Heritage Champion Councillor Christine Lawton said: “I am very proud for the people of South Holland that this architectural gem has been recognised in this way and has been awarded Grade I status.”

South Holland Citizens Advice Bureau Moves Premises The district’s Citizen’s Advice Bureau has moved into new office accommodation at the council offices in Priory Road. They closed their doors on then old offices at 24 The Crescent, Spalding on the 24th January and re-opened to the public on the 1st February. The service which provides advice and information to the local community has been at the heart of the community for 23 years with a core service provided mainly by local volunteers. South Holland CAB manager John Willoughby said: “Our service remains very much in demand and believe that this will increase over the coming months. He however was keen to stress that whilst they were now sharing office accommodation within the Council offices, they remained an independent organisation “We provide free, confidential, independent and

impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities - this means that we don’t charge, we don’t tell and we don’t judge!” The CAB also offers specialist legal advice in debt and welfare benefits, and in partnership with Ringrose Law, specialist housing advice. Advice is also offered in a variety of languages. In 2010-11 they dealt with more than 13,000 new enquiries. As well as moving their main office in Spalding they are also planning to open a new outreach service from April, this time at the new Community Centre at Sutton Bridge. The events take place on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th April, and Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th April, at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering. Volunteers will be needed for a variety of jobs and no volleyball experience is needed.

Communities Urged to Join Diamond Jubilee fun Party planners are urged to take a tip or two from a specially devised toolkit to help celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Street parties, fetes and large public events are expected to be held up and down the country this year to toast the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne. To get you organised and ensure your event goes with a swing, South Holland District Council has produced a toolkit or checklist on what to do ahead of the celebrations which will focus on an extended bank holiday weekend from Saturday, June 2 until Tuesday, June 5. Organising small, private street parties and fetes is straightforward and does not normally require licenses. However if you are thinking about a larger event, planning to have a pay-bar, charging admission, selling food, providing entertainment or want to close your street for an afternoon, there are licenses and legalities involved which you can get help with. Grants are available for street parties and community events from a number of organisations including South Holland District Council’s Designated Members’ Budget Scheme where each councillor has monies available for local projects and initiatives. If you have any questions or require further details, then please contact the Community Development Team at South Holland District Council on 01775 761161 or email community@sholland.gov.uk

Local Opticians Sponsors Local Charity LIVES volunteers alongside the East Midlands Ambulance Service attending certain 999 calls. The nature of LIVES is so that we train local responders so that they are ready to be called locally and attend to a 999 call quickly. LIVES is a charity and solely depends on the kind generosity from the general public and business’s. One local opticians, Molsom & Associates have decided they would like to sponsor the Bicker & Donington group where they have a shop located. As a local, family business, directors Andy Molsom and Cheryl Clark strive to assist the local community in a variety of ways. When they learnt that there was to be a local branch looking for sponsorship, they decide to get involved after all, who knows when a friend, family member or even ourselves may need the expertise of these diligent volunteers. Cheryl Clark, Director at Molsoms said; “I must admit, prior to our company involvement, I didn’t really know a lot about LIVES. Obviously I had heard of them, knew they attended medical emergencies,

and that their staff are volunteers, but now thanks to the discussions I have had with our local co-ordinator, Adam, I am more aware of the amount of time the LIVES volunteers donate to such a worthwhile cause. It is a great honour and pleasure to be a corporate sponsor of the Donington and Bicker branch of LIVES. I wish the charity a fulfilling future in the area.”

So just when we thought we were going to get away with a mild winter – it struck with a vengeance, drifting snow and minus 16 in Holbeach according to the BBC News! There were no major problems in this area thanks to LCC gritting lorries and new mini gritter being trialled for the first time, which I think as a result we will be seeing more of.

The Snow Code - tips on clearing snow and ice from pavements or public spaces (From Direct Government website) Don’t be put off clearing paths because you’re afraid someone will get injured. Remember, people walking on snow and ice have a responsibility to be careful themselves. Follow the advice below to make sure you clear the pathway safely and effectively. And don’t believe the myths - it’s unlikely you’ll be sued or held legally responsible for any injuries if you have cleared the path carefully. Clear the snow and ice early in the day. It’s easier to move fresh, loose snow rather than hard snow that has packed together from people walking on it. So if possible, start removing the snow and ice in the morning. If you remove the top layer of snow in the morning, any sunshine during the day will help melt any ice beneath. You can then cover the path with salt before nightfall to stop it refreezing overnight. Preventing slips: Pay extra attention to clearing snow and ice from steps and steep pathways - you might need to use more salt on these areas. Use salt or sand - not water. Don’t make the pathways more dangerous by causing them to refreeze. If you use water to melt the snow, it may refreeze and turn to black ice. Black ice increases the risk of injuries as it is invisible and very slippery. You can melt snow or prevent black ice by spreading some salt on the area you have cleared. You can use ordinary table or dishwasher salt - a tablespoon for each square metre you clear should work. Don’t use the salt found in salting bins - this will be needed to keep the roads clear. Be careful not to spread salt on plants or grass as it may damage them. If you don’t have enough salt, you can also use sand or ash. These won’t stop the path icing over as effectively as salt, but will provide good grip underfoot. Take care where you move the snow. When you’re shovelling snow, take care where you put it so it doesn’t block people’s paths or drains. Make sure you make a path down the middle of the area to be cleared first, so you have a clear surface to walk on. Then shovel the snow from the centre of the path to the sides.

LOCAL CONTACTS

Offer to clear your neighbours’ paths. If your neighbour has difficulty getting in and out of their home, offer to clear snow and ice around their property as well. Check that any elderly or disabled neighbours are alright in the cold weather. If you’re worried about them, try contacting their relatives or friends, or if necessary the local council.

School News

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils - Do You Have Exciting news at your school?   If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to  editor@simply-holbeach.co.uk.

Wisbech Grammar School An African headmistress is seeking to build on the historical links between Wisbech Grammar School and her home country of Sierra Leone. Mrs Alice Daramy, who runs the Islamic Call Society primary school in Moyamba in the south of the country, has been visiting the Grammar School in a trip partly funded by the British Council to help to create a partnership between the two schools. The connection between the two countries goes back 220 years to John Clarkson, who was – like his brother, Thomas – a pupil at the Grammar School. As agent for the Sierra Leone Company, Lieutenant Clarkson was instrumental in the founding of Freetown, which is now the country’s capital city, as a haven for former American slaves.

travelled outside her home country before – has toured the Wisbech & Fenland Museum, where she has looked at the displays about the Clarkson brothers, and she has noticed many differences between the Grammar School and her own school, with its 345 boys and girls aged six to 13. In future she would like to strengthen the partnership between the two schools by encouraging the writing of letters and emails as well as donating gifts and she would like to establish exchange visits between the two schools. Headmaster Nicholas Hammond said: “We are delighted to be involved with a cluster of schools in Cambridgeshire which are developing links with schools in Sierra Leone. We have been delighted to have Mrs Daramy with us for a week and look forward to developing long-lasting links between her school and ours.”

During her eight-day visit, Mrs Daramy – who has never

Weston St Mary CE Primary School (Federated with Surfleet Seas End Primary) Our children have been having an enjoyable Spring term. Class 1 celebrated the Chinese New Year in style when they visited the Shanghai Gardens restaurant in Spalding to taste their delicious food. All the children had a wonderful time and left with full stomachs! We would like to take this opportunity to thank Shanghai Gardens for welcoming us to their restaurant.

The topic for Spring Term is Heroes and Villains – Class 1 have been learning about the Victorian era and Florence Nightingale, while Class 2 has been exploring details of the Second World War and Winston Churchill. To celebrate this, the children visited Weston St Mary church for a service held by the vicar. Thanks to the support of the children’s parents, the children sang hymns to

School News Ayscoughfee Hall School Following last year’s outstanding achievements on the rugby field, it is the turn of the school’s football team to achieve some fantastic success at the start of this term. Before Christmas, the team had secured their passage to the Lincolnshire schools finals by winning the Spalding and District tournament. The County finals were held in Skegness on 28th January and the team played some excellent football to also win this stage of the competition and they now progress to the Regional final to be held in Nottingham. In the final, they beat Lea Francis school from Gainsborough and throughout the event scored twelve goals and only conceded one. The school have also been successful in sporting events organised by the Independent Schools Association (ISA) this term. Again, the football team brought home a trophy by winning the plate competition in the East Regional competition. In the ISA East Anglian Cross Country championships in Essex, Keilin Spurdens finished a highly creditable 3rd in the under 11 event and now goes forward to race in the national championships.

at The King John School in Thrapston. Closer to home, the whole school enjoyed a visit from the Exotic Pet Refuge and welcomed some very special guests including Thor, the European Eagle Owl. The Juniors also enjoyed a morning of activities at the “What is Life” exhibition at Spalding Baptist Church, to benefit their religious and cultural understanding.

On the music front, the school choir sang beautifully in the first round of the Rotary Music Competition in Boston and have progressed to the second round of the competition to be held

with some Blitz drawings of exceptionally high standard. After half term, the children of Class 2 are having a full day of being crime scene investigators! Children from Weston will visit Surfleet Seas End primary where they will meet Pulse, who will deliver a hands-on science experience for the schools. The

children will discover fascinating details about the applications, techniques and authentic processes used in Forensic Science. They’ll even get to dress up as Scenes of Crime Officers and take part in their own dramatized crime scene! We are sure that after this experience the children will return to school with great

enthusiasm towards their future learning. Later in the year, the school will be celebrating Mothering Sunday, organising an Easter bingo, visiting the South Holland Centre for a special performance, and having a visit from an ornithologist.

Advice - Buying over the Internet By John Willoughby As more and more of us are buying goods over the internet I think it is worthwhile reminding ourselves of our rights as consumers. What the law says

When you buy goods over the internet from a UK based company, you have the same rights as if you had bought them from a shop. The laws say the goods must:

Cancel your order,

This means they must be as described by the seller. This includes any description on the label. For example, if a pair of trousers are described as being leather, they must be leather. In most circumstances, it also means that they must conform to any advertising claims made about them; and

at any time up to seven working days after you received the goods and get your money back, although you might have to pay for the return of the goods. You cannot cancel if, for example, the goods were made to order, perishable, newspapers, or software, audio or video recordings which have been unsealed and have the goods delivered within 30 days of your order unless you and the seller agreed otherwise. If the seller later realises they cannot deliver within this time, they must tell you and give you the option of cancelling and getting a full refund.

Be of satisfactory quality.

What to do if the goods don’t arrive

Match their description

This means the goods must meet the standards that any reasonable person would expect. This includes their condition (whether they are safe and free from minor faults), appearance and finish. The goods must also be fit for their purpose, which includes what you would normally expect from the goods in question and also anything that you have specifically pointed out for the seller In addition, if the seller sells the goods in the course of a business (rather than a private sale), a criminal offence may have been committed if the goods are unsafe, or their description or price is false to a material degree. You may have additional rights when you buy over the internet, including the right to:

Clear information before you decide to buy,

including the name of the seller and the price of the goods, including any ‘extras’ like VAT or delivery charge. If you pay any money before the goods are delivered, the seller must also give you their full postal address. This information must be written and can be in a letter, fax, e-mail or on the website.

If the goods aren’t delivered by the agreed date or within thirty days, you have the right either to cancel the order and get your money back, or ask for a replacement.

Your rights if the goods are faulty • Refund

If the goods are damaged when they are delivered or are substantially different from their description on the website, you are entitled to ask for a full refund, including the cost of all postage and packaging. Faulty goods are not subject to the return time limit, but you must contact the seller within a reasonable period.

• Replacement or repair

If the goods are faulty and you return them promptly you don’t have to agree to a replacement or repair. If you have had the goods some time before you notice the fault, you would normally have lost your right to a refund and would be entitled to have the goods replaced or repaired. The repair should be carried out within a reasonable time and restore the goods

Citizens Advice Bureau give free, confidential, impartial and independent advice to help you solve your problems.   South Holland CAB is open at :   Council Offices, Priory Road, Spalding, PE11 2XE Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays 10am – 4pm;   Thursdays and Fridays 10am – 1pm Drop in for a short assessment interview during opening hours, prior to being offered an appointment. to a satisfactory condition. If the goods cannot be replaced or repaired, you would be entitled to a refund or the cost of buying the goods elsewhere. If you have had the goods some time, the seller may be entitled to offer you less than the purchase price to take into account the use you have had from them.

Compensation

You may be entitled to compensation if: the contract has been broken (breach of contract), for example the goods don’t match their description or are not of satisfactory quality or fit for their purpose; or you have incurred additional expenses or inconvenience because of breach of contract or negligence, for example, there is an electrical fault on a toaster you buy over the internet and this starts a fire, damaging other property; or someone has been injured because the goods were unsafe. In such circumstances you should contact Consumer Direct on 0845 404 0506 before returning the goods to the seller. Always take legal advice before deciding whether to accept an offer of compensation for personal injury; or the seller made a false statement about the goods to persuade you to buy; or you have accepted a repair which has turned out to be unsatisfactory. The amount of compensation you are entitled to will depend upon the seriousness of the breach of contract and could include the cost of replacing the goods or having the goods repaired.

The bureau is also open at the following:   Parish Offices, 11 West End, Holbeach:   Wednesdays   (drop-in for 15 minute assessment interviews)   Fridays   (appointments only):10am – 1pm   Market House, Market St, Long Sutton:   Mondays (drop-in for 15 minute assessment interviews)   Thursdays (appointments only):10am – 1pm

Business Focus - Spalding Mobility 2

For All Your   Mobility Needs Seeing doom and gloom headlines from every angle it makes it difficult for many of us to see opportunities or be brave enough to take them but that is exactly what local businessman David Carroll has done. Already owning two shops in Spalding – Paul Taylor and Spalding Mobility, he has expanded his business with the addition of a second Mobility shop, Spalding Mobility 2. Spalding Mobility 2 based at Holland Market offers you a much wider range of products and a huge test area so you can be completely confident in your purchase.

Bespoke Wheelchairs & Scooters

Many of today’s standard and off the shelf wheelchairs and scooters offer little or no comfort or support to the user. This can cause a problem with the seat depth meaning users tend to place a cushion behind their back or on the seat for extra support. If this happens you have bought the wrong chair and will not be comfortable. Our bespoke service involves a consultation of your disability and discomfort. We then can analyse what type of chair/scooter is best for you. Once this has been established we will then take measurements for the correct chair or scooter. Our bespoke service is designed to offer the maximum comfort available.

New and Pre-Loved

Adult Read of the Month - Deborah Goes to Dover by M.C. Beaton M.C. Beaton is a hugely popular author. She moved on from her well-loved Hamish Macbeth series to books about the busybody amateur detective Agatha Raisin in stories with wonderful titles like Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death. Deborah Goes to Dover is part of her latest Regency Matchmaker series about Miss Hannah Pym who travels around the country looking for adventure and setting up romances. The pretty but boisterous Lady Deborah Western is encouraged into the ways of a tomboy by her unruly twin brother. Miss Pym arrives just in time to ensure Lady Deborah is introduced to more feminine pursuits. Fun and light-hearted, this book will have you looking out for more.

Children’s Read of the Month Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy Skulduggery Pleasant is the first of a great series of books aimed at children from around 10 years old. Skulduggery is a brilliant, wise-cracking detective and magician who just happens to be dead and have a skull for a face. He teams up with 13-year-old Stephanie to fight the forces of evil. It is a fast paced and exciting story and huge fun to read.

In The Garden Hopefully the snow and ice will soon pass and we can get out into the garden to start the season off, as according to the Met Office Spring officially starts on March 1st! Vegetable garden Hopefully the vegetable patch was well manured in the autumn. Now is the time to break the clods down and rake in a general purpose fertilizer prior to sowing and planting. For 100% guaranteed germination, plant cell-grown young vegetable plants. A wide range of brassicas and lettuce are available now. Plant onion sets and shallots and protect from birds with string or netting. Plant those “chitted” potatoes as the soil warms, protecting any new shoots with fleece. Why not create a new herb bed in a sunny spot, close to the kitchen or plant a herb pot and stand it on the patio? Mint varieties are best grown on their own in containers. Harvest your herbs little and often to keep plants compact, tender and prevent flowering.

Fruit garden Tie in new raspberry canes, removing last season’s fruited stems. Cut autumn fruiting varieties back to ground level. Now is the time to plant a new strawberry bed or replace a tired, old bed with new virus free strawberry plants. Choose both early and late maturing varieties to prolong the picking period. Place cloches over established strawberry plants for an early crop. Hand pollinate any early peach and nectarine flowers on wall trained bushes. Apply a mulch of composted manure around fruit bushes and protect developing buds from birds with netting.

Lawn care Lawns are living things that undergo much abuse from the kids football match to the exploits of Rex the dog. Spring is the time to start repairing or preparing for the damage to come. A healthy lawn is better able to

14

withstand knocks and attack from harmful fungus. Therefore improve your lawns health by scarifying, aerating, using a garden fork or hollow tined aerator and rolling lightly. Apply a spring lawn feed and repair those bare patches with a suitable grass seed. Now is an excellent time to sow a new lawn. Select a lawn seed mix that suits the aspect and conditions of your chosen site. Alternatively consider laying a quality, ready grown turf for an instant beautiful lawn. Have the lawnmower serviced before the mowing season starts and remember to mow on a high setting for the first few cuts.

Around the garden Empty glasshouses should be cleaned inside and out, including any staging, seed trays and pots. Over-wintering pests can be reduced with a liquid sterilant, eg. Jeyes fluid. With water becoming increasingly more expensive, consider installing a water butt, or connect several water butts together to increase the storage capacity. Try building a self-assembly compost bin to recycle your vegetable waste and shredded paper or produce your own top quality compost with the help of a wormery. Clean the decking and patio with a simple to use algae and moss killing product. If that’s not enough for you then the really keen gardeners will also be sowing seeds and planting - March is the start of a busy time for gardening. It doesn’t matter how much you do, as long as you enjoy yourself. With the sun hopefully shining and the fresh air around you, there is no better way to keep yourself fit.

Over the Spring and Summer months we will be working with local specialists on how to get the most from your garden in 2012.    This month Baytree Nurseries are helping you with preparation of your garden for Spring/Summer.

Master Gardener Launches in South Holland Recruitment is now under way for the next foundation course training on 10 & 11 March An exciting project driven by leading charity, Garden Organic, partnering South Holland District Council is being launched in this district. The new programme which is already successfully operating across other areas of the county, involves the development of a number of community gardens and the promotion of people learning the art of growing their own vegetables. The project is supported by the Health and Well-being Fund, a partnership between NHS Lincolnshire and Lincolnshire County Council. The Lincolnshire Master Gardener programme is a volunteer network supporting local people and communities to grow fruit and vegetables in their gardens and community gardens. Free Support for Beginner Gardeners and Community Groups More and more people are becoming interested in growing their own food for numerous reasons, ranging from health, environmental awareness and, more recently, saving money. Each volunteer Master Gardener will mentor and support 10 householders develop their new food growing skills alongside supporting a local community garden. Volunteers are being urged to register quickly as this is a superb opportunity. We ask for a minimum commitment of half an hour a week. One Lincolnshire Master Gardener recently reported to Boston Council that “I have been a volunteer for many different groups & associations over the years but I have never felt so supported as I do as a Master Gardener” National Programme, Local Impact Building on the success of its sister scheme – Master Composters – Master Gardeners work in the community promoting the benefits of food growing through events, community talks, and practical demos. The role of a Master Gardener is not only getting more people into gardening and growing their own, but also to support them through any difficulties. The project has had great success in Islington, South London, Warwickshire and Norfolk. ”The lovely thing about the scheme is you don’t have to be an expert to be eligible to volunteer, all that is required is some experience of growing your own, together with a passion for encouraging others to have a go. Full Master Gardener training is provided covering everything a volunteer should need to know, with additional support from a dedicated Master Gardener manual an interactive website and myself” summarises Gabbie Sharp, South Holland Master Gardener Co-ordinator. Planning Your Day

The Wedding Planning Begins … With the last month being full of all things love – hearts, flowers and Valentine’s day as well as traditionally February 29th being the day when us ladies can ask our men to marry us we thought we would give you a helping hand to plan your special day. Whether you’ve recently got engaged or have been engaged for some time, organising your wedding can be one of the most exciting things you’ll ever do. If your wedding is next year, now is the time to get those creative juices flowing – and with some organisation and inspiration, you can make sure it’s as stress free as possible.

Agree a budget - and stick to it! Discussing and setting a budget should be your first priority. You need to talk about what you want to spend and what you can realistically afford. Be honest and discuss any concerns you might have – start as you mean to go on, you both need to be happy with your decisions! You might find it’s easier to decide your budget by breaking the day into sections: wedding attire, venue (ceremony and reception), catering, flowers, rings, photographer, entertainment, stationery, transport and honeymoon. If family have offered to help you with costs, have that conversation now – it’s better for everyone to be in the picture, and then you know how much you need to save. Once you know how much you can allocate to each part of the day, you can start to research your options.

Where to Start – 12 months or more to go This early on, there’s no point worrying about who’s sitting where at the reception or what your first dance is going to be. You just need to make a start on the basic features of your day. • Date – when do you want to get married? If you can pin it down to a certain month, that will help when you get quotes. But remember, some months, like during the winter, are cheaper than others. Mid-week is also cheaper than a Saturday. Have you checked with family and friends in case you’ve picked a date that clashes with another family event? • Guest List – you don’t need a final number at this stage, but when it comes to getting quotes you’ll need to work on an approximate number. It might also be worth making a decision now on whether to include children into the list – making a rule early on will avoid confusion for everybody. • Themes – is there a specific colour or visual theme you want to incorporate into your day? Do you want a relaxed feel or something more traditional? Are there any specific styles that are personal to you as a couple? • Venue – religious ceremony, civil ceremony? At home or away? Maybe you fancy ‘the destination wedding’?

The choice is endless! • Catering – buffet, bbq, sit down meal? • Reception – local village hall, pub, hotel, marquee, or something different? A lot of places get booked up early – sometimes a year in advance – so you do need to consider this option seriously, especially if you have a particular date in mind. • Bridesmaids – if you’re having bridesmaids, how many do you want? Will you be buying their dresses? Once you’ve made your choices, you can delegate work to them. After all, they are your attendants, so you can make them work for the privilege. This also applies to the Best Man! • Photographer – do you want traditional or relaxed photos? What about a video? • Entertainment – disco, live band, classical music, chocolate fountains, fireworks, highland piper, line dancing, belly dancing…there is something for all tastes and budgets! • Transport – limo, classic car, sports car, horse and carriage? Or perhaps you’re thinking of something different? • Wedding attire – the men seem to get off lightly here, but as with all things there is more choice the earlier you start to look. For brides, finding that perfect dress can take as long as you want it to, and there’s no harm looking for ideas now. Some dresses need to be ordered, so it’s best to start early. • Honeymoon – in most cases, it’s too early to start worrying about this now. But, there’s no harm in looking for ideas now and keeping your eyes peeled for a bargain. • Health and Beauty – it’s time to start looking after your health and making sure you’re in tip top condition for that special day. Healthy eating, exercise, a good skin care routine - maybe even some time for pampering?

want (marriage is about compromise, remember!). Once you start parting with money, keep a record of what you’ve paid for and when final payments are due. Why not set up a spreadsheet with everything on it so you can see what’s been paid? It can be very therapeutic to see things being ticked off! At 12 months to go, you should be able to tick off the list: Budget agreed Wedding date set Send out ‘save the date’ cards Approximate guest numbers agreed Wedding venue (ceremony and reception) – quotes/ booked Photographer & transport – quotes/booked Entertainment – discussing/getting quotes/booked Wedding attire – planning started Just stay calm and take one step at a time, and you’ll enjoy every minute of your wedding planning!

Bookings Once you’ve discussed these key areas, the next stage is start getting quotes and making visits. Don’t let any one bulldoze you into parting with your money – make sure it’s what you both

The Recipe For Success By Kate Tarrant When it comes to planning your wedding cake, often the biggest problem can be having too much choice. Last year when the time came for me to decide the type of wedding cake I wanted, it soon became apparent that there was rather a lot to consider! But with a bit of organisation and some ‘tasting sessions’ (essential research I tell you), it really was a fun experience and nothing to get stressed about.

Plan

Decoration: Tiers & Themes

Likes? Dislikes? Themes? Are there any specific colours or tastes you’d like to incorporate? Do you want something unique or traditional, or both?

Traditionally, the wedding cake has tiers (with the top tier traditionally being saved for the Christening of your first child). But you might want just a single tier, or perhaps something really creative that goes out in lots of different directions, or makes a specific shape. Of course, you don’t have to go with a round shape: square, hexagonal, heart-shaped, topsy-turvy - the list goes on!

Before you get started, it helps to have a rough idea of what you’re aiming for. You don’t need an exact plan, and your baker / caterer will be able to help you make decisions, but this will make things a little easier. Buy a wedding magazine and tear out ideas that strike you. Visit a wedding fayre and eat some cake!

Taste For me, this was the most important factor in making the perfect wedding cake. I wanted to stick to the tradition of a fruit cake, and as myself and my husband-to-be loved fruit cake, this decision was a no-brainer. Of course, not everyone likes fruit cake. You might prefer sponge, which can be just as tasty. You might also want to be more gracious than I was and consider that perhaps not all your guests will enjoy fruit! With sponge there are so many options - and you can incorporate your favourite flavours. Chocolate, vanilla sponge, carrot cake, zesty lemon….the choice is endless. Another popular option is to have alternate tiers of sponge and fruit - ensuring all tastes are catered for.

Cupcakes are also a very popular trend at the moment - and a cupcake tower can look stunning. Cupcakes can be given away to guests at the end of the evening, or some brides and grooms decide to serve them as the dessert. With the decoration of your cake, you won’t be stuck for ideas. There is so much you can do. Traditionally, the cake is covered with a rich white fondant - but you can have any colour! And if you’re going for sponge, you might want to incorporate different flavours - chocolate being a very popular option. When it comes to the finer details of your cake, you might want to match it to the colour and/ or theme of your wedding. Options include sugar roses or fresh flowers (you might like these to match your bouquets), fruits, hearts, ribbons and bells. And then there’s the cake topper to think about - you don’t have to have this, but it’s another area to have fun with!

Have fun Whatever you do, remember to have fun with your planning. Your cake will be an individual creation for your special day, reflecting your personalities as a couple. Good luck - and enjoy your cake tasting!

Method: Wipe mushrooms with damp kitchen paper to remove any soil, and peel if necessary. Remove stalks. Arrange mushrooms on a baking sheet, underside uppermost, season with salt & pepper, then arrange the chunks of haggis and cheese on top of the mushrooms, filling them generously. Bake in a preheated oven (180 / 160 fan) for 10-15 minutes until the cheese is oozing over the edges and the mushrooms are piping hot. Don’t worry if they collapse a little, it adds to the charm!! We served ours with a green salad and some crispy pancetta sprinkled over! top, skin side up and enjoy!

Creamy Rabbit Pie With Leeks And Smoked Bacon Ingredients:

Cooked meat from 2 rabbits, chopped into bite-sized pieces 2 medium leeks, finely chopped 6 rashers smoked streaky bacon, chopped 2 tbsp plain flour Quarter pint of chicken stock 100ml double cream Heaped tbsp chopped fresh thyme leaves Salt & freshly ground black pepper 500g pack of shortcrust pastry (or make your own!!) 1 egg, to glaze Method: In a large shallow saucepan (preferably non stick) fry the bacon until it renders it’s fat and starts to crisp up. Remove the bacon, leaving the fat in the pan. Gently fry the chopped leeks in the bacon fat until tender, adding a little oil if necessary (this depends on how fatty your bacon was). Once the leeks are tender, add the flour to the pan and stir constantly for a minute to cook off the flour. Add the chicken stock a little at a time until you have a very thick sauce (you may not need all of the stock). At this stage, add the bacon back to the pan along with the rabbit meat and the double cream. Season to taste with the thyme, salt & pepper. Remove from the heat and put to one side whilst you make the pastry case.

and 3cm deep). Leave the excess pastry hanging over the sides. Don’t forget at this stage to roll a lid for the pie as well!! Fill with your rabbit mixture, brush the top edge with beaten egg and place your pastry lid on top. Carefully trim the excess pastry and crimp the edges or press them together with the tines of a fork. Cut a small slot in the top of the pie to allow steam to escape, then glaze generously with the beaten egg. Bake in a preheated oven (180 / 160 fan) for 45 minutes to an hour.

Roll the pastry to approx 5mm thick and line a large pie dish (at least 26cm round

SPRING IS IN THE AIR! As the first few buds of spring gently emerge on the bare bone branches, eager pairs of eyes stare out of windows. Dogs’ tails wag, cats’ noses twitch and paws are licked in anticipation.

Spring is approaching and soon enough both human and animal hearts will be soothed by the freedom to participate in the great outdoors. However, though they may be itching to get outdoors, they’ll be scratching if we don’t take the proper precautions to ensure they are protected once they put paw to grass and begin exploring. There are a number of parasites that become a threat unless your pet is protected.

Fleas

Both cats and dogs are susceptible to becoming a walking home for fleas that happily thrive in the warmer months. The tiny parasites breed quickly and fiercely and are capable of infesting your home in just a few weeks. Animals and humans alike are irritated by their bites which cause severe itching, and allergic reactions known as Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) may occur as a result of the flea saliva, with swelling and rashes developing in the bite area.

Tapeworm Further to the nasty scratching resulting from their biting, fleas often carry tapeworms and if swallowed by your pet, your pet then becomes a tapeworm carrier. An indication that your pet has tapeworms is the presence of small, rice-like, white particles around your pet’s bottom. Adult tapeworms are made up of segments and once mature, individual segments break off and are expelled through the stool. These are the grain-like particles that you will notice if your pet is carrying the worms. Fleas and tapeworm can be easily prevented by planning ahead, ensuring your pet is protected against parasites before the onset of warmer weather.

Topical applications are easy to apply and require just a once a month application. Additionally, powders and sprays are available to help protect both your pet and living environment. Caution: Products containing permethrin should not be used on cats as they can cause severe adverse reactions.

Lungworm

Dogs that have a tendency to eat whatever they discover outside need to be watched closely. Incidents of lungworm, which a dog can contract by ingesting an infected slug or snail, have been on the rise in recent years. Lungworm is a particularly nasty and often fatal parasite affecting the lungs and heart of dogs and foxes. Their larva develop inside slugs and snails, and are then passed on to canines if eaten. Although treatments are available, it is a difficult parasite to treat and prevention is better than cure. For an easy prevention program option, choose a topical flea prevention that also prevents against lungworm.

Ticks

Ticks are another concern for pet owners in the spring and summer months. Hiding amongst long grass, ticks can attach themselves to your pet and grow up to 200 times their original size through sucking blood. Because of their small size, a tick may not be noticed until it has had enough of a blood meal to increase its size enough to a viewable instance. Ticks can cause infections and abscesses at the point of attachment, lyme disease and paralysis. Once again, topical applications are available to prevent ticks from surviving if they do initially attach to your pet. If you find a tick on your pet, it is advisable to have the pest removed by a veterinarian. Part of the parasite may be left lodged in your pet’s skin if you attempt to remove yourself. Always seek the advice of your veterinarian if you are unsure of how best to treat your pet or if you think they may be unwell.

The outdoors is for enjoying, but prevention is better than cure.

Celebrat ingMother’s Day Mother’s Day is a time for you to give thanks to your mum - thanks for everything she’s done for you throughout your life (and for everything she still patiently continues to do!). Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (this year it’s the 18th March), it can also be a day to dedicate time to thinking about motherhood and maternal bonds in general; you might be thinking about your own mum, your grandmother, aunts or other people that are important to you. It’s a chance to embrace and pay tribute to the female relationships in your life.

A potted history

The tradition of honouring mothers and motherhood can be traced back to ancient times. Around the world and in different cultures, what is known as ‘Mother’s Day’ has varying origins and is celebrated at different times; for example, Argentina celebrates it in October. In the UK what we refer to as Mother’s Day has become linked to Mothering Sunday – which is the 4th Sunday of Lent. It is important to note that in history the two events were separate: Mother’s Day reflecting the more secular celebrations held elsewhere around the world, and Mothering Sunday being the Christian festival. Overtime in the UK the two have become linked.

However, other factors include the fact that in the 16th century people were expected to return to their home or ‘mother’ church during Lent. Consequently, on the 4th Sunday of Lent, everyone would visit their ‘mother’ church – the main church in their locality. Of course, this event led to a time of family reunions; mothers were re-united with their children. Historians also believe that it was the existence of this timely family reunion that later led to servants (many of whom were children) being given the day off to visit their family, and in particular to spend time with their mother. As such, the day also came to be a celebration to include all mothers.

How are you planning on celebrating Mother’s Day this year? We’ve put together some of our favourite ways to say thank you to our mums. • Cooking for Mum - giving her the night off and pampering her with some homecooked food (and giving her a break from the washing up!) • A family day out - for some quality time together amongst our hectic lives! • A box of chocolates and a girlie DVD. • A homemade cake, a cup of tea, and a good catch up. • Flowers and a homemade card from the family!

Mothering Sunday

There are many theories as to how the 4th Sunday in Lent became known as Mothering Sunday. Of most significance is the fact that this was (and still is) a time when Christians would celebrate the Virgin Mary and the ‘mother church.’

Did you know?

The food item most closely associated with Mothering Sunday is the Simnel cake. These days we tend to wrongly confuse Simnel cakes as being linked with Easter. 28

Focus on Fleet & Fleet Hargate Fleet is at first glance a typical East Midland’s fenland village in south Lincolnshire stretching from the salt marshes of the Wash deep into the Anglian fens. The Meridian passes through Fleet Fen, marked by a stone on Langarygate. Nearly 12 miles long but only 2 miles at its widest, the Fleet settlement filtered northward as land was reclaimed from this former tidal inlet - the sea is now some six miles away! The main industry within the area is farming of arable crops like grain, brassicas and potatoes for supermarkets; quantities of flowers are also grown, especially daffodils. Of the population which is approximately1800, most are concentrated around the ancient coastal route known as the Hergate, giving its name to Fleet Hargate. The main street (Old Main Road) has been much improved by the planting of Rowan trees and general repairs of high standard to properties in the Conservation Area starting at the Bull. In the 1970s the new A17 by-passed the village leaving it a quiet backwater within convenient distance of Spalding, King’s Lynn, Boston, Wisbech and Peterborough. Fleet & Fleet Hargate offer many advantages with a delightful village school, a Grade I Listed church and adjoining Conservation Area, 2 traditional pubs, Baptist Chapel, Post Office, hairdressers, nursing homes, playing field, A17 Farm Café, Childrens Nursery and more! Walks There are many varied walks available but these are always on the level. Millennium Trails and other footpaths are much favoured by ramblers and amblers. A designated cycle route is enjoyed by many. Wild flowers like red campion, borage, yellow flag and poppies adorn the dykes and summer verges. Birds in the area include skylarks, green woodpeckers, red kites, kingfishers, goldfinches, waterfowl and many others too numerous to mention.

Fleot was Anglo-Saxon for “place to which the tide flows”.The sea once flowed inland as far as the church to mingle with untidy watercourses. It is said underground freshwater still streams beneath the Hargate. Fleet River is marked on old maps of the fen and ancient lock gates were found beneath Hallgate not far from Pinstock Lane. Air photos indicate a possible prehistoric salt industry in Fleet Fen. Early Iron Age pottery was found on the site of a tumulus near the church along with medieval shards. Complete pots of sophisticated Romano-British design were excavated in the fen and are in Spalding Gentlemen’s Society Museum. If Roman slaves cleared woods and embanked fens this would account for the long arrow-straight roads in Fleet Fen. A map names the Ravens Bank as “Roman road”. Could Raven be a corruption of Roman as suggested by an early historian? Roman coins and boat timber were found near Ravens Clough on what is now Little South Holland Drain. Thanks to Fleet Parish Council for supplying the information in this article. More details can be found online at   www. parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Fleet

More History According to an eminent American scholar, “England possesses the most remarkable set of records…in the world”. Fleet in Lincolnshire can claim to be one of the most remarkably recorded English “vills”. Records pertaining to Fleet exist from the 11th century through almost every century to the present day. The Black Death inevitably left gaps, decimating populations.

Did You Know? There are tales of Dick Turpin stabling his horse at The Bull and hiding in the chimney. If only the 17th century staircase could speak! 32

Business Focus - The Willows Day Nursery

at Fleet Hargate

As soon as you arrive at the Willows Day Nursery it’s impossible not to feel immediately at home – whether you’re a parent or child. Immaculately renovated, this beautiful nursery was once the setting for the Willows Tearooms. Now it’s a modern and exciting environment dedicated to children’s learning, with a family feel right at its heart. Light and airy throughout, the nursery’s spacious rooms provide the perfect environment for promoting creativity and discovery in children from 12 weeks through to 10 years. The main play zone is a vast expanse of space for children to freely indulge their imaginations. And for those who prefer more structured play, a neighbouring room caters for quiet play. Natural light pours in through the windows – but by being specially laminated, it means the rooms don’t overheat in the summer and, while the children can enjoy the views of outside, they are protected from anyone seeing in. To the back of the play area is the spacious dining room. Its large children’s dining table means that all the children can share meal times together – and it’s a great space for extra creative activities. Downstairs there is a room, where time can be dedicated to those starting school in September – a fun educational setting equipped with an interactive whiteboard and latest ICT materials. In the afternoons, this room will hold homework activities and a ‘chill out’ zone for those attending the Go Wild After School Club. Children will also find a computer area, with a mini library and more ICT resources including digital cameras and talking books. Upstairs, this new nursery is just as beautifully designed. There are three rooms for the 0-2s. The first room, ‘The Wriggler Room’, is an active play area. Next you will find ‘The Snoozer Room’ dedicated to quiet time and finally there is the ‘The Squiggler Room’ – a room specially designed for messy play, music and creativity. All this is just for 9 children for their key workers to really get to know them and retain a family feel.

The big outdoors

Outside, children will be greeted with an enormous

garden jam-packed with activities to fuel the imagination – from a giant sandpit and raised vegetable gardens, to dens to play hide and seek in. There is even a raised area for plays and performances! And if that’s not enough, down at the bottom of the garden children will find the ‘Honey Pot’ – an additional indoor play space with its own washroom facilities. One day a café, the next a spaceship! And if it’s raining, children can play on the huge covered outdoor decking, safely under wraps!

Vicky Pitts

Vicky, the owner of Willows Day Nursery, has over 18 years of experience in primary and early years teaching. In addition to this she was responsible for establishing the early years setting at the William Alvey school in Sleaford - a project she single handedly took responsibility for. This dedication and passion for creating a fun environment that allows for discovery shines through every corner of Willows Day Nursery. As Vicky states, the environment is cultured around the ‘TOT’ experience: ‘T is for Traditional: creating a family feel, eating together and access to a wide range of wooden toys that allow for open ended play. O is for Outdoors: the nursery allows children to explore the outdoors through free flow play and learn key skills, such as those taught in a Forest School environment,

which is our long term aim to become. T is for Technology: this is incorporated into the day - at every level.’

Homemade food

Vicky’s father is a chef, and he will be on hand to involve the children in the food-making process – from planting vegetables, to cooking! All the homemade food will be sourced from fresh, local produce, and in addition to seasonal menus, each week there will be a meal from a different part of the world.

Open day Thursday 5th April

The nursery opens in April, and will run from 7am 6.30pm. To meet the team and discuss your childcare requirements, come along to the open day on the 5th April from 2:30pm – 4:30pm. Funded pre-school places will be available once the initial assessment has taken place. Breakfast, After school and Holiday clubs are available with local school drop off and collection by prior arrangement

Nissan Juke 1.6 DIG-T Tekna

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk Twitter: @carwriteups I admire Nissan for being different. It stands out from the crowd at the moment because it has dared to produce a car which is definitely like Marmite; you either love the Juke or you hate it. And it is certainly an odd vehicle. At first glance, it doesn’t appear fast, but it is; it doesn’t give the impression of being comfortable, but it is. Do you see where I’m going here? As I write this I still can’t make my mind up on whether I like the car on not. It is fun to drive – mainly because it zips away from a standing start easily, albeit in a highly-strung manner. On the other hand, I don’t like the lack of load space because, as a dad of two, I need a boot which is bigger than the Juke’s. That said, if you’re going away on holiday or business, it is adequate for your flight case and your partner’s travel case – as long as the luggage is small and rectangular. The Juke is a mixed bag really. The two-wheel-drive model I tested could easily work for someone who wants a slightly zany company car to stick out from the convoy of German executive models on the daily commute. It is also an ideal vehicle for pure leisure; if you’re into towing, this little motor will pull up to 1200kg (braked). And there is also a fourwheel-drive version available which will, in wintry or muddy rural surroundings, give plenty of extra grip. But, whatever the reason for driving it, you’ll find the car is definitely one that draws looks. So what is the Juke all about? Well, the idea is that it brings all the benefits of the popular Qashqai into a more compact package. It is what’s known as a ‘Crossover’ vehicle because

38

Nissan has merged the rugged appeal of an SUV with the emotive appeal of a sports car. As the fourth such model in Nissan’s European range, the car injects some much-needed dynamism into the small car segment, offering British motorists an alternative to the traditional, uninspiring hatchback. It seems that innovation is central to every part of the Juke’s design and, inside, you are greeted with the ‘Nissan Dynamic Control System’. This is a central command and display module like no other; it allows you to alter dynamic drive settings as well as easily control functions such as climate control. What’s more, the system adopts different displays, colours and functions depending on the mode selected. It all adds to the fun of being behind the wheel of this nonconformist, yet very capable, car. The Juke on test here, in flagship ‘Tekna’ trim, has enough room for four and, with its 1.6 turbo and 188 horses under the bonnet, it’ll undoubtedly set all occupants’ pulses racing. With a 0-62mph sprint of 8.0seconds and a top speed of 134mph you can feel that Nissan meant this car to have a sporting, ‘hot-hatch’ character. It does feel slightly skittish and edgy but that just adds to the entertainment. You might think then that this petrol-powered version of the Juke is a juice-guzzler. Well, surprisingly, it’s not - it returns a very reasonable 40.9mpg on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 159g/km.

The Juke is manufactured alongside the Qashqai, Qashqai+2 and Note at Nissan’s high-tech manufacturing facility in Sunderland. The 1.6 DIG-T Tekna will set you back £18,095 on the road.

Snow, snow, snow. February has been full of snow and ice which for me is great fun - I love the white stuff but it can be a hazard for dogs.

dog’s nails cut short and the fur between his toes trimmed to a manageable level. Cut too short, the fur won’t offer protection from the snow anymore, but a neatly trimmed foot will attract less ice and snow to collect inside. To avoid trimming out too much hair, keep your scissors parrallel with your dogs pads and just shear off the fur that sticks out from in between the pads. Around the toes the fur should be cut just short enough to see the end of the toenail. Trim around the sides to keep that nice “paw” shape. If your dog isn’t a dog that grows fur between his toes (not all do), then you need trim nothing!

Did you know ice and snow can cause damage to your dog’s paws? Snow and ice can get stuck in between the pads, causing cuts and uncomfortably cold toes. Even a small amount of build-up under your dog’s feet can pull the sensitive hairs underneath and cause a noticable loss of traction. As an owner you can help by keeping your

When you’re just coming in from a snowy walk and wonder how to free your dog’s feet from caked snow, the best bet is to simply let it melt off in the heat of your home. Pulling on the packed snowballs will be painful for your dog and he’ll be very reluctant to let you try a second time. If you have walked along a road which has

been gritted it is worth rinsing the paws to ensure there isn’t any salt stuck on their paws. If you would like to get in touch please email me at oscar@chilli-mp.co.uk
