Spalding High School Reunion Oxfam To Close? Were you born between September ‘61 and August ‘62 and attended Spalding High School? If so then you will probably have already celebrated your big 50 or it may be in the very near future! Suzanne Strickson (nee Greensmith) and Elaine Lyon (nee Coles) are planning a reunion to be held on;- Saturday, May 12th 2012 at 7pm at Ayscoughfee Hall School, London Road, Spalding (which is where we all started at the High School). We would love to see our old friends, catch up on what’s been happening to you and reminisce on old times. If you are interested, please get in touch via email: s_strickson@hotmail.com or lyon27@tiscali.co.uk Please invite fellow class mates to join us too. Look forward to hearing from you all.

A recent milestone saw a celebration of Oxfam being in Spalding for 50 years, however unless shop takings can be increased significantly their lease will not be renewed. Continued high quality donations give the potential to raise more funds but in Spalding the dedicated team lacks volunteers.

Are you able to give a time commitment of two to three hours each week? You could be what Oxfam in Spalding needs for help with till operation, window display, washing china and glass donations and shop merchandising. For more information, call into the store.

Sage Apprentices and Disability Forum strive for excellent Customer Service In late February eleven members of Boston Disability Forum enjoyed a fantastic lunch as part of a Customer Service and Access Audit at Boston College’s Sage Restaurant in Spalding. The staff and apprentices at Sage Restaurant aim to deliver exceptional customer service to all customers, of all abilities. This innovative partnership with the Community & Voluntary Sector was a perfect opportunity for the apprentices to share the knowledge and previous experiences of local residents, with the aim of improving and raising customer care in the catering industry, amongst the next generation of catering professionals. The meeting encompassed a practical learning opportunity to serve customers with a range of disabilities including physical, mobility, hearing and visual impairments, together with other hidden disabilities. Following the meal, the apprentices joined in an open discussion around the table, which allowed the forum to share good and bad dining experiences with them, whilst encouraging any questions.

This successful event is one of many that is essential to strengthening valuable relationships as part of the College’s continuous commitment to Equality and Diversity. If you would like more information about a Catering Apprenticeship at Sage Restaurant please contact Sally Tebbs on 07880 584738 or email sally-t@boston.ac.uk.

Boston Disability Forum is run entirely by volunteers, with the support of Lincolnshire Community & Voluntary Service. The Forum aims to educate people and increase awareness

of barriers that are faced by the disabled, while seeking to promote user participation and representation at all levels within our society. Frank Hanson, Equality and Diversity Manager at Boston College, is a representative of the forum. He commented on the event and said, “We would like to express our thanks to the Boston Disability Forum for agreeing to take part in this exciting initiative. Lectures or reading alone cannot beat the first hand, practical knowledge of the potential difficulties and challenges faced by people with disabilities. The Forum will be producing a report highlighting their experience, which will be shared with our students to further improve their learning and understanding.”

Bens challenge for the 2012 season is to compete in some of the 2012 European Championship rounds under new team Skyzone Racing based in Eastbourne. Ben was approached at the end of the 2011 season and snapped at the chance to race in Europe where Supermoto is hugely successful, highly competitive and has a much larger following.

From a cultural viewpoint there is a lot going on at the moment. For orchestra lovers South Holland is developing its very own symphony, “The South Holland Symphony” which you   are being asked to help develop. The London   Mozart Players have already been to the   y t n Methodist Church in Holbeach and will be u   o C h, the t r returning on 24th March and 12th May o W , Nick e e h u from 2pm to 4pm with the grand ‘world t s s r i o y an llor f Ever premier’ of the symphony on 19th July Counci on, gives you i g s i n i at the South Holland Centre. Preparations   for the Torch Relay are progressing well and the detailed route, timings and torch bearers will be announced by the   London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games on For the second year running Lincolnshire County March 19th. There will be a special pull out edition with Council has frozen its’ proportion of the Council all the details in Simply Holbeach for the occasion. Tax. South Holland District Council have gone

one better and actually reduced their Council tax by just over 0.25%. This makes South Holland District Council one of just eight councils in the country to have reduced their council tax. Unfortunately Lincolnshire Police have decided to go the other way and have increased their proportion and for the second year running you now pay more in council tax to the Police than you do to South Holland District Council!   South Holland has also now agreed to move towards a shared management including chief executive with Great Yarmouth. We already share a management team with Breckland in Norfolk (Dereham area). This innovative move (we will be the first to share management across three councils), will save us a further £100,000 a year and provide opportunities for further shared services without having to cut any of ours. South Holland District Council along with all other councils in the country who have their own council housing stock, have now been told by Government that they don’t actually own their housing – the government do! What is worse is that they now want paying for that housing stock and South Holland having been a debt free authority for many years now finds itself having to pay a mouth- watering £67million to the government to help pay off the national debt!

Prior to this we had to pay over any rent received from tenants to the government. The good news is that now, the difference we paid in rent to the government and the amount we will pay in interest on the £67m will mean we are about £1m a year better off. The other major bonus is that we will be able to keep the rent received from our tenants to invest in new council houses. We will also be able to keep a larger proportion of right to buy sales, which again we will be able to invest in new houses which will provide opportunities for younger people to get on

the housing ladder.

Finally congratulations to the team of volunteers who have helped to clear the Holbeach Nature Reserve in Fishpond Lane. Holbeach Town Councillor, Martin Howard, who contributed £1,000 from his Designated Councillors’ Budget to help pay for the project, said: “Our aim is to make this a real centrepiece for the people of Holbeach. It was once overgrown with brambles, but a lot of work has been done to clear the site to make it appealing for visitors and a haven for wildlife.” Councillor Howard has been working with Graham and Carole Rudkin to clear the site and provide a natural habitat for wildlife.

School News

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils - Do You Have Exciting news at your school?   If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to  editor@simply-holbeach.co.uk.

Weston St Mary CE Primary School The first day of March was World Book Day, and children were asked to come to school dressed as their favourite book character – we had characters ranging from Pinnochio, Noddy, Six Dinner Sid, Little Red Riding Hood, Tigger, Hermione, Cinderella, Where’s Wally to Horrid Henry. Children have a busy term ahead, we are sending two teams of Year 6 boys to a Volleyball Festival being organised by Agilitas Sports, and five teams from Class 5 to a Quicksticks Hockey Competition. We are hoping for fine weather! Children from Class 4 & 5 attended a Dance Festival at the South Holland Centre – a fantastic morning! We are also going to be attending the Big Bang at the South Holland Centre later

this month – Class 3 will be performing Samba and Class 5 Taiko drums. On Friday 16th March Food4Thought, our hot meals provider, kindly organised a “Mums Eat Free” lunch for Mothers Day. There was a great turnout of mums! Our Class 5 children will be attending “Easter cracked” at the Baptist Church in Spalding at the end of March. We are organising a trip to London in May – every two years we take Year 5 & 6 children to London to look round the Houses of Parliament and to go on the London Eye, it is a fantastic day out and one that children really enjoy.

Ayscoughfee Hall School

It has been a busy time for the children at Ayscoughfee Hall School. The Juniors, accompanied by many parents, had the experience of a lifetime singing with over 8,000 other youngsters in the Young Voices concert at the O2 arena in London. The quality of the singing, combined with the sheer numbers involved and the torchlight spectacular created a truly magical and uplifting experience for all.

rhymes”. Amongst many activities, they have posted letters to Goldilocks as well as making porridge and have been building walls and bridges for Humpty Dumpty and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The interhouse football and netball tournaments have been taking place with Vikings winning the football and Saxons the netball. In addition, a greater variety of interhouse competitions are being introduced to reflect all manner of interests and skills. To this effect, the high standard of the recent handwriting competition gave the judges some difficult decisions.

Elsewhere on the music front, the school choir sang beautifully in the semi finals of the Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition, doing the school proud and narrowly missing out on a place in the finals.

The children are also busy getting their entries ready for the Decorated Eggs competition, the entries for which will be on display in the school during the last week of term.

The school celebrated World Book Day at the start of March with the children and teachers dressing up as their favourite book character. There were some fantastic characters represented on the day – everything from Elmer the Elephant to Willy Wonka. On the subject of books, the Reception class have been having great fun with their topic “stories and

Looking further ahead, preparations are well underway for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations which will take place in the school on 1st June. The playground will become a traditional street party with music and games from the 1950s to add to the fun and to give the children a sense of the history and significance of the occasion.

Spalding High School Sixth Form LINCOLNSHIRE DANCE SESSIONS FOR ADULT BEGINNERS The sixth form at Spalding High School is co-educational and open to students in Year 11 from all local schools, as well as the High School, subject to a basic academic entry requirement. The sixth form regularly offers about 25 different subjects at AS and A Level, and consistently achieves some of the best results in Lincolnshire. About 90% of students usually progress to university, with most of those not wanting to go to university pursuing management training, officer training or similar careers. The last Ofsted inspection (2009) reported that “Through their excellent attitudes to learning, students make very good progress in achieving exceptionally and consistently high standards….Most students meet very challenging targets…Students make a strong contribution to the School…. Excellent personal development ”. More importantly, what do the students say? “Having only joined the High at 6th form, I was instantly made to feel welcome. I’ve made amazing friends, and the support you receive from staff is second to none….Spalding High School 6th form achieves a balance between encouraging academic success and offering a huge range of extra curricular activities”.

School News Wisbech Grammar School

Holbeach Primary School Great excitement has accompanied the opening of the new library at Holbeach Primary School. After many weeks of drilling and digging the library is finally ready. It is a wonderful, bright room flooded with light from the huge windows and this adds to the calm and gentle atmosphere. The new furniture is bright and welcoming. Already the pupils have loved choosing from a range of new fiction books, some donated by the PTFA. They are keen to read and then to find something new and to read some more! The week began with a visit by author Dan Freedman. Dan is an author and sports journalist who specialises in football. His books were a great hit with the Key Stage 2 pupils who were fascinated by his tales of the time he spent in the England team hotel during the World Cup and by his many interviews with famous footballers like David Beckham and Jermain Defoe. Dan read from his book Kick Off which tells the story of a young footballer named Jamie Johnson. Many pupils are keen to read the whole series of Jamie Johnson books and have been inspired to read more by Dan’s visit. Later in the week saw a visit by author Jane Clarke. Jane has written a huge range of different books which have inspired many readers. Her books are illustrated with wonderful pictures. In assembly everyone was captivated by her storytelling and rhymes. The younger children spent time

with Jane listening to her reading from her huge selection of books and drawing pictures of new animals that they had invented. The youngest children even made up a class rhyme. The week was concluded by a very special assembly where Reverend Alan Barker blessed the new library. Mrs Gill Graper from All Saints Church and Ricky Holstead (yr 6) together cut the ribbon. A splendid book shaped cake was cut by Jayden Price (yr 6) and Martin from Langworth’s builders. At the end of the day each pupil from Holbeach Primary School was presented with a special library pencil to mark the day. This opening ceremony was a quiet and gentle reminder to us all about how important reading is in our lives and how much we can all gain from reading.

The sixth form students were invited to don chefs’ whites and spend the day in the kitchen of the exclusive Goring Hotel – the establishment where the Middleton family stayed for the royal wedding – by the executive head chef, Derek Quelch. After touring the premises and inspecting a £2000 a night suite at the hotel, which is just a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace, the five A Level students set to work. One pair went to the larder to prepare pumpkin and mushrooms, as well as flaking salmon and making sandwiches ready for the afternoon team. The rest focused on vegetables, preparing spinach, onions and shallots. The seasoned staff showed the students how to make lobster omelettes and how to present food on the pass. Head of food and nutrition Mrs Alison Sloan said: “I love being in the kitchen when it is busy, because it is noisy and it is exciting when you see the finished dish on the pass ready to go.”

Advice

By John Willoughby

The clamping of vehicles on private land has been in the news a lot recently so I thought it would be beneficial to bring you up to date with the current regulations Use of licensed wheel-clampers

Wheel-clampers who charge a release fee must have a licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) if they are working on private land. It is a criminal offence for wheel-clampers without a licence to clamp your vehicle and to try to charge a release fee. It is also a criminal offence for someone to employ an unlicensed wheel-clamper, or for a landowner to allow a wheel-clamper who they know is unlicensed to operate on their property. When you pay to have your vehicle released, the wheelclamper must provide a receipt which includes the following information: • The place where the vehicle was clamped • Their name and signature • Their SIA licence number (a 15 digit number on the front of their licence) • The date. Licensed wheel-clampers should also wear their SIA licence where you can see it at all times when they are working. You can check whether someone has a valid SIA licence by looking on a public register of licences on the SIA website at www. the-sia.org.uk, or from the SIA call centre on 0844 892 1025.

When can your vehicle be clamped

If you park on private land without the owner’s permission, they can legally clamp your vehicle. However, they can only do this under certain conditions. Some examples of when your vehicle might be clamped on private land are when: • You have parked in a car park reserved for customers of a pub and you are not a customer • You have parked in the car park of a block of flats, where you are not a resident • You have parked in a car park reserved for employees of a company, when you are not an employee • You have overstayed in a pay car park • You have failed to display a ticket or permit properly, or at all • You have parked across two spaces instead of one • You have parked dangerously, or blocked an emergency access. In order for your vehicle to be legally clamped:

• There must be notices up where you can clearly see them, warning that unauthorized vehicles will be clamped • The landowner does not charge more than a reasonable fee to release your vehicle • Your vehicle is released as soon as you have said you will pay the release fee • There is a way for you to get in touch with the landowner (or their agent) to make arrangements to pay, for example a telephone number on the warning notice. • It is a SIA requirement that a landowner must not clamp your vehicle if: • It displays a valid disabled badge • Is a marked emergency service vehicle attending an emergency.

What to do if you are clamped If you are clamped:

• Keep calm, don’t lose your temper or attempt to remove a wheel-clamp - you could be sued for criminal damage if you damage the wheel-clamp. You could be also prosecuted for theft if you keep the clamp • Contact the telephone number shown and ask for release • Check whether warning signs and boundaries are clear enough. You could also take a photograph to use as evidence later on • Ask the wheel-clamper who they work for, and whether the landowner’s authority can be produced • You have the right as a clamped motorist to see their SIA licence if they are asking for a fee to release the vehicle • If you don’t think a wheel-clamper is licensed , don’t pay the release fee. If they refuse to release your vehicle without a fee, call the police. An unlicensed wheel-clamper who asks for a fee is committing a criminal offence. • You can report unlicensed wheel-clampers to the SIA • If the wheel-clamper uses threatening or intimidating behaviour, you should report this to the police • If the wheel-clamper is licensed, you will have to pay the release fee, but insist on a receipt. Try to get the address and phone number at which the wheel-clamper can be contacted • If you think you should not have been clamped, for example because the warning notices were inadequate, or the release fee was too high, the only way to get your money back may be through the courts. A solicitor will be able to advise you on

Towing away

It may be necessary to tow away a vehicle parked on private land if it is: • Dangerously parked • Causing an obstruction • Blocking an emergency access If your vehicle is towed away from private land • Look for any notices with contact information for the site owners or managers • Contact the local police station – they should be informed when a vehicle has been removed (do not dial 999 however!) • You will have to pay to get the vehicle released, but you may want to get legal advice from a solicitor. Anyone who tows away vehicles and charges a release fee must be licensed by the SIA. You can report them to the SIA (see above) if they are not licensed.

British Parking Association

You can also look on the website of the British Parking Association which acts as a trade association for companies that carry out parking enforcement activities on private land. Members of the Association must comply with a Code of Practice on wheel-clamping and vehicle removal. You can find the Code of Practice on the website at www.britishparking. co.uk/clamping.

Adult Read of the Month - Songs of the Humpback Whale by Jodi Picoult American author Jodi Picoult has become hugely popular with her modern novels about life, loves and the dynamics of family relationships. Songs of the Humpback Whale is one of her early novels originally published in 1992 although not available in the UK until it was re-launched in 2008. It tells the story of Jane who was abused as a child and now lives in the shadow of her successful oceanographer and whale expert husband Oliver. When her daughter Rebecca has problems Jane takes her across American hoping to find sanctuary. Our borrowers who enjoy one Jodi Picoult novel always come back for more and there are lots to choose from.

Children’s Read of the Month The Famous Five – Five Get Into Trouble by Enid Blyton The stories of Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy the dog have inspired generations of children to become amateur detectives. Parents love introducing their children to the thrilling adventures. The language is a little old-fashioned, everyone has a cook and a maid and it always seems to be summer but the story telling shows through. The books were published between 1942 and 1963 and there are 21 adventures to enjoy. In Five Get Into Trouble Dick has been kidnapped having been mistaken for someone else. The others manage to track him down but just as they think everything will be all COL-AD-HOME1 Spalding 190x135_Layout 1 09/12/2011 10:04 Page 1 right, they all find themselves held captive.

Gardening

April in your Garden By Baytree Garden Centre

Borders and Beds

Hardy annuals can be sown directly into soil that is not too wet and sticky. A wide selection of colourful cottage garden pants is available. Alternatively sow an insect friendly seed mixture in a sunny spot to attract colourful butterflies, moths and insects. Tender annuals, including many bedding plant varieties can be sown in a heated propagator and pricked out into pots of multipurpose compost. Grow young plants on a well-lit windowsill and plant out when the risk of frost has passed. For a dazzling display of colour later in the year, plant a few packets of summer flowering bulbs, including gladioli, dahlias, and lilies. Protect emerging shoots with slug pellets if necessary. If not done already, cut down last years herbaceous flower stems and foliage and apply a generous mulch of well-rotted compost. Now

is the time to put in place any plant supports for taller, back of the border perennials to grow through. Feed ericaceous plants e.g. rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias using a proprietary, acidic liquid feed or consider a granular slow release fertilizer to provide nutrients for several months. Pot -on root bound container grown shrubs using a loam based compost and ensure that drainage holes are not blocked.

The Garden Pond

Warmer weather means biting the bullet and tackling the garden pond. Remove plant debris and cut back last seasons marginal plant growth. Divide congested plant baskets, including water lilies and re-pot using aquatic compost. Cover the surface with a layer of gravel to prevent soil disturbance from curious fish. Stock the pond with an adequate supply of

marginal, deep water and oxygenating plants to help keep the pond water clear. Floating plants e.g. water-lettuce and hyacinth can be added in May, after the frosts. Check the pump, filter boxes and U.V. light if fitted and replace if necessary. Consider adding a bacterial suspension to “kick start” the natural filtering process. Check the water temperature periodically and commence feeding your fish when appropriate.

The Glasshouse

April is a good time to begin successional sowings of salad vegetables including cut and come again lettuce, mesclun, beetroot and spring onions. Always use clean pots and containers and fill with a good quality multipurpose compost. Water lightly until plants have established and keep an eye open for damping-off disease. Treat with a copper based fungicide if detected.

Complementary Therapies

Your Health and Wellbeing

Depending on your individual requirements, there are many complementary therapies that can help improve your general wellbeing. Complementary therapies are named as such because they complement conventional medicine and work hand in hand with an individual’s health. Hypnotherapy – a pure state of relaxation

Sue Wickham of Soul 2 Soul gives us the facts about hypnosis: ‘We all experience the hypnotic state throughout our daily lives, just before going into a deep sleep. There has been a lot of misconception put onto hypnosis due to the media and television. Hypnosis is not a state of sleep; you do not have the power over a person to take control of their thoughts. It is a joint decision where a person feels relaxed and comfortable to move into deeper relaxation. The hypnotic state is very similar to a deep meditation. You are aware of all noises around you and are fully aware of your surroundings. My clients always report how pleasurable and relaxing their experience of hypnosis has been. ‘Hypnotherapy is a natural therapy – a pure state of deep relaxation to enable a therapist to bypass a person’s conscious mind to allow direct communication with the subconscious mind. It can be of benefit to many types of problems of a physical or psychological nature including: fears, phobias, smoking, weight, confidence, stress, sleep problems and anxiety – to name but a few.’ For more information visit the National Council for Hypnotherapy: www.hypnotherapists.org.uk.

Acupuncture

This type of therapy involves a therapist inserting fine needles into specific areas of the body to help with a range of ailments – from back pain and migraines, to arthritis and dental pain. Acupuncture is based on ancient principles which go back nearly two thousand years! This form of therapy works by helping the body’s ‘motivating energy’ or ‘life energy’, known as qi, to move smoothly through the body’s pathways. The needles go into these channels and help the body to restore its balance. Acupuncturists believe that when the flow of qi is obstructed, ill health can occur. As a result, acupuncture aims to help make the flow of energy smooth again, thus helping the body to heal. The therapist may manipulate the needles from time to time to help to regulate the flow of the qi. For more information, contact the British Acupuncture Council at www.acupuncture.org.uk.

Reiki

Developed in Japan, Reiki is used as a form of natural healing – used to release physical and mental blockages. It works by the therapist putting their hands

in different positions either on or above the body over the 7 ‘chakra’ points. It is believed that healing energy then flows from the therapist to the patient – Reiki flows through the areas where negative energy is present, replacing it with positive energy, and thus in turn allowing the ‘life energy’ to flow again. Reiki practitioners believe that it can help anyone suffering from physical pain, but it is also said to help with a wide range of physical and emotional conditions – from mild anxiety and stress, to headaches and sleeplessness. Visit www.reikiassociation.org.uk for more information.

Nutritional Therapy

Jo van Bragt at MISHISHI hair and beauty in Spalding explains that healthy eating is not just about losing weight. Jo offers consultations and advice to people looking to improve their health through informed food and lifestyle choices.

by plants and trees. Sometimes it’s combined with massage. Aromatherapy is believed to help improve physical and emotional wellbeing. Reflexology This intensive massage works on the idea that different points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of the body. It has been practiced for some 5000 years by the Egyptians and Chinese and is said to be a means of unblocking energy and promoting healing. Great for some serious relaxation! Remember: always make sure you seek advice from qualified professionals only.

‘It’s a form of complimentary therapy that can help improve your health. I will work with you to produce a tailored nutritional report according to your individual needs. Health and nutrition therapy can have a range of benefits. It can improve overall health, help reduce symptoms of common ailments such as IBS, arthritis, psoriasis and ADHD, and can help promote everyday weight control. It can also be used to help reduce stress and improve natural energy.’ CIBTAC qualified in Diet & Nutrition, Anatomy and Physiology, a consultation with Jo can benefit young and old, male and female.

Our team favourites Indian Head Massage This relaxing massage has been practiced for over a thousand years and includes the treatment of the shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face. It is said to relieve tension, fatigue, headaches and eyestrain by manipulating energy channels.   Aromatherapy This alternative therapy combines the use of essential oils, naturally produced

Horse Riding By Louise Hardwick Horse Riding should come with a warning.... start and you won’t want to stop The well known phrase “daddy, I want a pony...” will never disappear. Whether you set eyes on your first shaggy pony in your local field, as a child or you became “hooked” at an older age, horses have an incredible way of settling in your soul. My story started as a toddler when I met my first ride, Dusty. My little legs didn’t even reach the bottom of the saddle, yet I never felt scared. They say you are born with horses in your blood. I agree that I was. However, I remain a huge advocate for introducing horses to people who previously have never felt the desire to ride. Horse riding has, thankfully, become increasingly accessible. The British Horse Society have worked tirelessly for years ( www.bhs.org.co.uk) to promote the sport. It is essential when considering your first horse riding experience that you are aware of a few basic points: • Always look for a BHS approved Riding School or BHS Registered Instructor. There are currently over 1000 approved centres and over 2000 registered instructors in the UK. • When you have chosen your approved riding school, be honest about your level of ability and any nerves you feel. (Before you meet your mount!) A good instructor wants to share the joy of riding with you - and armed with all your facts, they can match you to a suitable horse. • It doesn’t matter whether you have the “correct” attire to start your experience. Clothes do not make the man. A sensible pair of shoes, with a slight heel, a pair of jeans

and a warm jacket will suffice. The centre will spend time with you, correctly fitting a riding hat. This will have a Kite mark inside, so you know it has been tested to current safety standards. • Use your judgement. Do the horses and ponies at the riding school look generally happy and well cared for? Once you have considered all of the above, you are ready to go. Your first lesson will likely be around 30 minutes. No matter how fit you think you are, I promise you will feel muscles you never knew you had. So the addiction has started? I have no doubt that with the right instructor and right horse, you will be itching to get back on board. Regular lessons will not only improve your technical ability, they will start to develop the illusive “feel” that experienced riders talk of. “Feel” is when you have a rapport with your ride. You begin to understand the horse’s movement, his reactions to your movements and how you can work together. This is when you are likely to fall in love...I can’t describe the feeling. True rapport with a horse is a special thing. There are many options to pursue, all of which the BHS can assist you with. There are over 72,000 current members who are all as passionate, about their area within the sport.

22

These include: leisure riding, carriage driving, dressage, show jumping, polo and riding for the disabled to name but a few popular ones. The BHS will make you welcome, and you will find many opportunities to join other like minded members, at events, competitions or social gatherings. I could talk about this subject endlessly, but what I can summarise is this: When you and your ride feel as one, I guarantee the smile on your face will be huge. Riding should not just be considered as a sport. Horse riding is a way of life. The age ranges may be different, but you will see the same smile on the toddlers face on their pony as you will see on an Olympian winning Gold at the Equestrian Games. That smile is the love of the horse. It doesn’t matter what level you achieve with horses, they pay it back tenfold. If you don’t believe me have a look at the pictures...I started riding when I was just 3 years old and this is the smile riding brings me at 29.I look forward to the picture of me with my horses at 90! Give it a go. You won’t regret it, I promise.

Butternut Squash & Sweet Potato Lasagne

In association with The Black Bull, Donington   T:01775 822228 A: 7, Market Place, Donington

A great supper dish which can be assembled in advance, then cooked when needed. You will note I have written “season well with salt & pepper” quite a few times here – don’t worry, the dish itself can be bland if not well seasoned so please don’t be shy with the black pepper mill!!! Also, dried herbs lend themselves to being roasted, whereas fresh herbs would burn and lose their flavour. The fresh basil, however, lends a fresh taste to the dish, reminding us that summer is just around the corner (hopefully!!).

Ingredients:

1 medium butternut squash, peeled, de-seeded and chopped into 1cm cubes 1kg sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1cm cubes 1 large onion, peeled and sliced 4 garlic cloves, whole with skin on 100ml olive oil (not extra virgin) 1 litre passata Dried lasagne sheets (approx 8-10 depending on size) Small bunch fresh basil leaves, roughly torn or chopped Dried mixed Italian seasoning (oregano, basil, thyme etc) 50g butter 50g plain flour Approx 1 pint milk 100g grated parmesan / grana padano (or strong, hard cheese of your choice) Salt & freshly ground black pepper

To assemble the lasagne, put one third of the squash, onion & sweet potato mix into the bottom of a large baking dish (approx 20x30cms and 10cms deep). Pour over a third of the passata, season well with salt & pepper and sprinkle on a third of the basil. Cover with lasagne sheets then repeat twice more ending with a layer of lasagne sheets. Cover the top with your cheese sauce, sprinkle on the remaining cheese and bake in a moderate oven (180c/160c fan) for 35-45 minutes until piping hot and bubbling on top. You should have a nice golden crust on top. Serve with garlic bread and a nice green salad.

Method:

Place the diced squash, sweet potatoes, sliced onion and garlic cloves onto a large baking sheet, drizzle with the olive oil and sprinkle on the dried herbs. Season with lots of salt & ground pepper and toss in the oil to coat evenly. Roast in a hot oven (200c/180c fan) for approx 25 minutes until just soft and starting to blacken on the edges. Meanwhile, make your white sauce. Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the flour and stirring constantly, cook for 1 minute. Add the milk a little at a time, still stirring (I use a whisk at this point) until you have a thick sauce. Season well with salt and pepper and add half of the grated cheese. When your squash mixture has roasted, take the garlic cloves and squeeze the sweet paste from each one into your passata and mix well. Season with salt & pepper, and a few mixed dried herbs to taste.

TAKE A SPIN INTO SPRING! Spring has sprung. So what better time to get back outdoors and reinvigorated?! Here are some ways to spice up your pet’s exercise time and give a new meaning to the term ‘taking a spin’ round the block! Cover new ground Change your routine and try a different route. For us, following the same path every day gets boring on a visual level, but for a dog, there’s nothing new to smell! With an exquisitely sensitive nose, every scent sets your dog’s brain off into a smell-tastic escapade that we can only dare to imagine. The same smells day in, day out, can get boring for those with fine-tuned noses, so mix it up a bit and go left instead of right, right instead of left, and find yourself in some unchartered territory.

Walk in a Pack Do you have friends who have their own dogs? Walking with other dogs mimics the natural pack instinct of your dog. It is a great way for your dog to make new waggy-tailed buddies and gives you the opportunity to have a good ‘chin wag’ as you take in the scenery..

Play Time A walk can be livened up with a bit of jump, catch and fetch if you take along some dog friendly toys. Frisbees are a favourite for dogs who love to jump and catch the wind. Balls with throwers will get your pet racing for the ball at the speed of light and a gentle game of fetch will be fun for older dogs or

those with less agility. Rooke’s has a great selection of affordable toys, get our staff to show you when you’re next in.

School Time Sometimes you can teach an old dog, new tricks! Your dog’s mind is always ready to learn. Training your dog stimulates their mind and is as good an activity as running and jumping. Obedience training is the back bone of a good relationship with your dog and will build trust between the two of you. If you prefer, join a training class so you can engage with others and get advice from those more experienced in educating your dog.

The Right Accessories Whilst it’s fun to get out there and let loose, it is also worth giving some consideration to your choice of lead or harness. Different sized dogs need different leads and collars. The health and temperament of the dog may also determine your choice of accessories. Next time you’re in, ask one of our members of staff for some advice. They’ll be more than happy to help and can point you in the right direction.

The Clean up

And remember, whatever fun ways you choose to liven up your walks, don’t forget to poop and scoop! It makes these fresh, spring walks nicer for everyone.

Focus on Long Sutton & Sutton Bridge By Kate Chapman Steeped in history the Suttons - both Long Sutton and Sutton Bridge - are thriving communities at the heart South Holland. Separated along the A17 by a few miles they are, however quite distinctive in their own rights - with one a busy port and the other a bustling market town. Several buildings of historical note can be found dotted around Sutton Bridge including the Cross Keys Swing Bridge - a feat of engineering spanning the River Nene, as well as St Matthew’s Church, built in 1843 and the only flintsone church in Lincolnshire. There are also two lighthouses - known as the East and West Bank lighthouses - which were built in around 1831, to commemorate the opening of the Nene outfall. It is the East Bank landmark which draws the most attention as it was home to renowned conservationist Sir Peter Scott during the 1930s.

and with its oblong flats laid in a herringbone pattern it is believed to be the highest, straightest lead spire in the country. The church is a real community hub - and home to a variety of groups including bell ringers, mums and toddlers, Mothers’ Union and a music group to name a few. 2012 is a special year for the church and its devoted members who will be celebrating their 50th annual flower festival between Saturday, April 28 and Monday, May 7. The event which was initially organised as a one off has gone from strength to strength and this year promises to be better than ever. As well as the usual breathtaking floral displays there will also be catering available plus a raft of entertainments throughout the festival week including performances by the Bourne Borderers morris dancers and King’s Lynn Town Band. For more information about the event visit www.longsuttonchurch.org Another building at the heart of the community is the

Market House, which flourished from the late 1850s thanks to the advent of the railways; between 1830 and 1870 the town found itself on a main trade route to East Anglia. Such an increase in trade led to the building of a place to market local produce and a Corn Exchange to trade grain. Daily markets were held there but sadly began to decline in the 1920s when agriculture was hit by an economic downturn and community needs were subsequently met elsewhere. The building became a car showroom and was then used by a stonemason until 1999 when it was bought by South Holland District Council for a group of townsfolk who decided to bring it back into community use. Now the building has been restored to its original purpose it’s story has gone full circle. Now run by volunteers the centre offers access to a variety of services and groups such as toddler dance classes, free internet access, Lincs Credit Union and Tai Chi plus crafts, photography, migrant language courses and rural cinema. Visit www.longsuttonmarkethouse.org for more information.

Scott, who was also an Olympic sportsman, spent much of his time there studying and painting the abundant wildlife surrounding the isolated building. The lighthouse is now owned by Doug and Sue Hilton, who last year secured planning permission to add a museum and visitor centre to the site, as they want to make the area more accessible to the general public. Mr Hilton said they are still working to source funding for the project but are pressing ahead with a scheme to drill a borehole, which will provide fresh water needed for the new ponds they want to create. Once this work is complete it is hoped the ponds, sewerage tank and the base for the visitor centre will be installed this year, with the centre itself being completed next year. In another exciting development the collection of Sir Peter Scott memorobilia, which the couple has built up and will eventually display in the new museum, is to take centre stage at this year’s Royal Society’s summer exhibition. Scott’s swimming, gliding and sailing medals will form part of a sport exhibition being held to commemorate the 2012 Olympics. And following on from the success of last year’s open days the Hiltons are opening up the lighthouse to the public every weekend throughout August from 11am until 4.30pm - with refreshments of tea and buns available in the garage. For more information about the project visit www.snowgoosetrust.org Community spirit is just as prevalent a couple of miles down the road in the slightly larger market town of Long Sutton, which is home to around 5,000 people. St Mary’s Church dominates the central Market Place. Built in the latter half of the 11th century the church is of great architectural as well as historical significance. At 162 feet high the lead-covered timber spire is the focal point

Mum Knows Best... By Kate Chapman So insomnia appears to be my latest pregnancy symptom - but there’s not long to go until my due date now. To say I’m on countdown is an understatement – then the sleepless nights proper will really begin! It was during one of my wide-eyed periods in the middle of the night that the realisation hit me just how all our lives are going to change again very soon. Then my thoughts turned to sibling rivalry and how would I cope with the demands of two children? Nevermind manoeuvring the double buggy we recently took posession of, which has also been haunting my sleep. But as an only child I’m certainly going to find the whole sibling dynamic very interesting… Nancy, however, seems to be developing a growing interest in babies at the moment. Everywhere we go, she’s pointing them out, wanting to have a closer look, and in some instances touch, much to my horror as she’s quite heavy handed. Her baby doll has recently become one of her favourite toys - I often find her giving her a drink (albeit it out of a tea cup or milk jug), winding her and ‘rocking’ her rather furiously from side to side.

But all this behaviour leads me to think she’s going to make a great big sister - I don’t want to leave anything to chance tough, as on other levels she doesn’t seem to react well to change. I had to move her car seat the other week to try and fit something in the boot of the car and she had a right paddy because she wasn’t in her usual spot, so I’m not too sure how she’s going to cope with not being the centre of attention all the time. I sense the green-eyed monster rearing his ugly head very, very soon! Wish me luck!

I think on some level she knows something is happening as she keeps pointing at my ever expanding tummy saying ‘baby’, and on occasion she’s even kissed my growing bump when prompted, although she did this to Mr Chapman the other night too, so perhaps I’m reading too much into that one!

Paul Hammond from Cavendish Walsh answers Your Questions about Finance Who would look after your children if the worst happened? Sophia and Aiden were the most popular names for new babies in 2011 with Emma and Jackson coming a close second. A new baby is an exciting time for any family but there is more to consider than just the name. It is worrying that parents of minor children are less likely than others to have prepared a will. You should consider who would look after your children in the event of your death. A valid will nominating guardians is invaluable. If no one knows what you would have wanted, the court will decide on the future of your children, and it may not be what you or your children would have wished. If you are living as a couple but not officially married, you may be treated as a single person and your surviving partner may get nothing at all. If you’re a single parent you can take advantage of a free will during July.

Business Focus - Crown Affair Hair & Beauty

Inside Spalding’s Newest Salon

Since opening back in October last year, Crown Affair in Hall Place has certainly got us all talking about what is going on in one of Spalding’s oldest and most ornate buildings. Salon owner, Frank Martino, is proud of the restoration work of the once empty building “There were just one or two buildings in Spalding that I’d been keeping my eye on over the years to open a new salon, to offer a wide range of hair, beauty and clinical treatments. I had a strong idea of the type of environment I wanted to create for my clients.”

Nail Bar Crown Affair Hair & Beauty has three experienced nail technicians offering you the latest nail treatments. Whether you are looking for the more traditional gel and acrylic nail or nail art, foils or the latest craze of foils, Sammy, Lauren & Victoria are on hand for you.

A new business and new team is always going to be a challenge but the team of 15 are now not only colleagues but firm friends too, something Frank feels is imperative in delivering the best relaxing environment when clients are looking to leave the stresses of everyday life at the door.

Clinics Diamond Touch is situated within Crown Affair Hair & Beauty, and is the first salon in Spalding to offer this exciting treatment. OXYjet/Oxynergy is the world’s most effective Oxygen System available. Known as the ‘Celebrity Facial Treatment’.

More than Hair & Beauty As a hair and beauty salon, Crown Affair Hair & Beauty offers you everything you would expect but there are a several specialist services that are exclusive in Spalding.   Wig Work Crown Affair Hair & Beauty are part of a national network of independent salons who provide a wig styling service for people suffering from medical and illness related hair loss. ‘My New Hair‘ is a pioneering new charity founded and inspired by Trevor Sorbie MBE.

Oxynergy Paris offers a Mesotherapy product range (Pure Essence) that is suitable for transdermal delivery with various types of devices such as oxygen pressure injection. This range is also used with Collagen Induction Therapy treatments. Both face and body can be treated efficiently and results can be seen after the first session and long term results can be achieved after 4-5 sessions. As a rule Kim recommends a minimum of 5 treatments for face and 8-10 for body. Treatments available include: Anti-ageing, Rejuvenation, Wrinkles & Fine lines, Skin tightening, Pigmentation & Age Spots, Skin Whitening, Eye Bags and Dark Circles, Acne, Acne Scarring, Hair Loss.

If you are considering a wig for the first time, you may have questions and concerns, please call the salon and book a consultation to discuss these. All consultations are held in private with either Frank or Alex and are free of charge, for more information visit www.mynewhair.org

For more information about Crown Affair or Diamond Touch visit www.crownaffair.co.uk, email hello@ crownaffair.co.uk, find them on facebook and twitter or pop in for a free consultation.

Quality of Service Guarantee

Crown Affair strives to provide a high standard of service, feedback is so important for any business and allows the staff to develop. Here is just a small selection of clients’ feedback; I a m new to the area and when I read about a new salon opening I thought I would go along and see what it was all about. From the minute I stepped through the door it felt like a city salon, the reception is very warm and friendly and I was instantly at ease. After a tough few months, I decided to treat myself and enjoyed a massage – all my stress was gone & I certainly will be back!

Janie Edmonds Frank, what a wonderful new salon you have created. I have been coming to you for many years and can safely say I will be continuing to do so in your new home. Good luck with Crown Affair.

Sarah Smithson I just wanted to say a huge thank you for spoiling my daughter last week. I wanted her to come away feeling like a new woman and she certainly did after her mini makeover – I love her new hair style, it makes her look absolutely gorgeous. Thanks to everyone that helped her.

Maserati GranCabrio

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk Twitter: @carwriteups SOME SAY that cars are nothing special – they’re only for getting you from A to B. That’s true in a way, but that’s like saying any old home will do as long there’s a roof over your head. The Maserati GranCabrio is definitley something different – and special. Getting behind its wheel for a week is like moving from your bungalow in Birmingham to a villa in Valencia for seven days.

the two passengers in the back have to be very small) to enjoy the experience of driving with the top down. The roof can be opened in just 28 seconds and it puts on show all of the car’s interior beauty.

Looks-wise, the Italian sports car’s headlights blend perfectly into the contours of the nose section, while at the centre of its oval grille is Maserati’s legendary Trident symbol in chrome. The rear end of the GranCabrio emphasises its high-tech character, with triangular taillights that use 96 LEDs to ensure maximum night-time visibility, and a wide rear valence is framed at the sides by two pairs of large chrome exhaust tailpipes. The car is then finished off by impressive 20-inch Trident design alloy wheels which fit tightly into the wheel-arches, creating a powerful stance.

Of course, the Maserati sounds as good as you might expect. Better, in fact. That’s because, controlled by pneumatic valves, the GranCabrio’s exhaust system has two distinct characters – discreet and inspiring. In ‘Normal’ mode the valves are closed to ensure a low rumble. However, pressing the ‘Sport’ button not only changes the car’s performance and handling but also opens the exhaust valves - enabling the engine to deliver maximum power with a smileinducing growl.

Inside, the GranCabrio boasts a combination of elegance and sportiness. All the materials are in leather and wood and the driver’s controls are located to give a feeling of total command. The major dynamic functions are controlled by switches on the driver’s side, whilst the most commonly used multimedia controls can be operated via buttons on the steering wheel. One of the best things about the GranCabrio is that it is a four-seater, which allows you and three others (admittedly,

38

At the heart of all this throbs the most powerful of the Italian car-maker’s engines – the glorious 4.7 litre V8, delivering 434 bhp. It means the car can sprint from 0-62 mph in just 5.3 seconds and will go on to a top speed of 175 mph. The Maserati GranCabrio is indeed a car to behold. Yes, it will get you from A to B like any other car – but, believe me, you won’t want to stop at B once you get in the driver’s seat, drop the roof, gun the engine and hear the crackling roar of the V8.

Easter Fun By Hayley Willerton Traditionally linked to the oldest and the most important Christian Festival, the celebration of the death and coming to life again of Jesus Christ, Easter is now the second biggest holiday in the UK, after Christmas. What Foods are traditionally eaten at Easter time?

Good Friday Hot cross buns are traditionally served on Good Friday. A Hot Cross Bun is a rich, spiced tea cake. Easter Day Easter day, like Christmas day, is also associated with special food: Boiled eggs are traditionally served at breakfast. Roast lamb is the traditional meat for the main meal on Easter Day. Simnel cake is baked for tea. Simnel cake Simnel cake is a fruit cake with a flat layer of marzipan (sugar almond paste) on top and decorated with 11 marzipan balls representing the 12 apostles minus Judas, who betrayed Christ. Originally the simnel cake

was a gift to mothers on Mothering Sunday in Mid Lent. Easter biscuits Easter biscuits are sometimes called “Cakes”, and are eaten on Easter Sunday. They contain spices, currants and sometimes grated lemon rind.

British traditions at Easter

Easter Eggs The first eggs given at Easter were birds’ eggs. These eggs were painted in bright colours to give them further meaning as a gift. As chocolate became more wide spread in the 20th Century, a chocolate version of the traditional painted egg was developed. The size of the chocolate egg has grown over the years and is now more likely to be the size of an ostrich egg rather than a small birds’ egg. Easter presents Chocolate eggs are given to children. The eggs are either hollow or have a filling, and are usually covered with brightly coloured silver paper. Around 80 million chocolate eggs are eaten each year in Britain! Easter egg hunts Small chocolate eggs are hidden for children to find on the traditional Easter egg hunt. In recent years this game has been linked to the Easter Bunny, which only arrived in England relatively recently. Easter cards Easter cards arrived in Victorian England, when a stationer added a greeting to a drawing of a rabbit.

Oscar’s Outings

www.t witter.com/oscaradventures Taking a dog to work is proven to be good for staff morale and can increase work levels but there are some things you need to think about: • • •

This month has been jam packed for me - I have been to the seaside for walks, along the river at Surfleet, picnics at Bourne Woods and the most exciting part for me was a day spent at Chilli Media HQ! I was in the office for a whole day and loved it. Having never been before I wasn’t too sure what the protocol was on office behaviour but I soon learned that I had my bed and not to tear up paper!

• • • •

Only take dogs that are well socialised Ensure you have control of yor dog at all times and at a bare minimum they respond to sit, stay, down Make a list of items to bring, including bowls, food, treats, lead, pet carrier, toys, poop bags, clean up supplies (in case of an accident), etc. Use a lead that does not tangle easily Plan your day to include time for toilet breaks and walks Post a note at your door indicating that you have a pet in your office Be respectful of people with allergies and those who are uncomfortable around dogs.

oscar@chilli-mp.co.uk

The 2012 event will take place on Friday, June 22. On this day, thousands of pet owners will work with their dogs. In addition to the Friday for dogs, the entire week, June 18-22, has been designated Take Your Pet To Work Week. So, if your company is closed on Fridays or if you want to invite all types of pets, select any day during the week to host a special event at your workplace. If you do have pets i n your workplace, please email me some pictures and I will try and include them next month. If you would like to get in touch please email me at oscar@chilli-mp.co.uk

Silver Service - Second To None

Business Focus – South Holland Community Furniture Recycling Project Are you thinking of buying any new items of furniture or other household goods? Wondering what to do with your old but still usable furniture which you would like to find a good home for? Would you consider donating your surplus furniture to our ‘not for profit’ charity – the South Holland Community Furniture Recycling Project? About the project For over ten years our aim has been to alleviate poverty and economic distress by helping individuals and households turn their dwelling place into a home. Last year over 1,200 households were helped by the project. Our trustees believe that the concept of a decent home has three components: a dwelling unit with appropriate facilities; sufficient furniture and household effects; and, most importantly, a loving, caring family relationship. The absence of the first two makes the development of the third difficult. Living in such a decent home enables individuals to confidently engage with the wider society. We rely on your donations The South Holland Community Furniture Recycling Project relies on the generosity of local residents who donate (free of any collection charges) their unwanted but still usable furniture and other household effects. We then make these donated goods available to local households in identified economic distress. The items are sold at a low charge, which is simply to cover collection, storage, distribution and administrative expenses. The majority of our clients are residents of South Holland who are referred to us by the District Council’s Housing Benefit and Homelessness Unit, Social Services, Citizens Advice Bureau, local churches and charities. Many are previous referrals or come to us on ‘word of mouth ‘ recommendation. Our staff carefully assesses each client to ensure that they face real financial need. Our clients can get better value for their income from work, welfare benefits or social loans gaining £3 of benefit for every £1 they spend. Our trustees believe that households should be able to exercise a decree a choice in deciding what to take into their homes, in return the project expects and our clients expect to pay a small charge to enhance their selfesteem and respect their human dignity. Our project tries to be self-sustaining. Some 65% of our expenditure costs are covered from our operational income plus a small grant from SHDC.

We actively pursue alternative grant funding but in the current climate of uncertainty have had to run down prudently accumulated reserves. With the support of local donors and some local corporate sponsorship we can in the long term only continue to help local families facing temporary or more permanent financial hardship by increasing the stream of donations to generate more income. In helping the project the donors are helping themselves. We annually divert 80 tonnes of household waste from the council’s waste stream which reduces landfill charges, landfill tax and penalty charges imposed for failure to achieve landfill reduction charges. The more you donate, the more we can help reduce your council tax. Volunteering opportunities The project helps local residents fulfil their inclination for charitable giving and provides volunteering opportunities so they can put something back into their local community. The project provides four part-time employment opportunities and an opportunity for those volunteers with disabilities or the long term unemployed to acquire the necessary work and social skills to improve their chances of securing training and employment. Please continue to donate your old but still usable furniture to our charitable project. If interested in volunteering to help in the project please contact us. Visitors are welcome whenever the project is open. We are located next to the Drayman’s Arms at 34a Little London, Spalding, PE11 2UB. We’re open Tues-Thurs 10am – 3pm. Tel: 01775 711171.
