MP Nominates Holbeach Firm For National Manufacturing Showcase As part of the ‘Made by Britain’ campaign, launched on July 6th by Business Secretary Vince Cable to showcase the best of British manufacturing, John Hayes MP picked Laddies of Holbeach to represent the South Holland and the Deepings constituency.

contenders so that wouldn’t have been fair.

Laddies, a fourth generation family business, has been making ice cream since 1922, and has undertaken many initiatives in the community, including a link up with distance learners at the University of Lincoln.

“I have been a happy customer at Laddies for many years, and it is a great example of a well run, thriving local family business which deserves wider recognition.

John Hayes said “Choosing just one product from my constituency was very hard – initially I thought of nominating sausages, pork pies or stuffed chine, but there are just too many quality local

“So, knowing that our area is renowned for making food, I decided that Laddies was the right choice to celebrate manufacturing in South East Lincolnshire.

“I’ve always supported food manufacturing locally; companies such as Laddies boost the local economy through their commitment to quality and service.”

Craft Fun For All The Family Families are being invited to join in the creative fun at a series of craft days being laid on at Spalding’s Ayscoughfee Hall this summer. Help will be on hand for parents, carers and their youngsters to make a range of arts and crafts on Thursdays during the long holiday break from school.

Sessions will take place on July 28, August 11 and 18 and September 1, from 11am - 3pm. Families can drop in any time and the cost is £2.50 per child. The days are primarily aimed at children aged five to 11 but other ages are welcome and youngsters must be accompanied by an adult.

Fantastic Five Join Hospice Mission Five intrepid council workers will be taking to the streets late at night to help raise money for cancer care. The team, nicknamed Mid-life Crisis, will be taking part in a Ladies Moonlight Walk , a six-mile stroll around Spalding in aid of St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice. The group, Jackie Starr, Lynne Williams, Rhonda Oldfield and twin sisters Jacqui and Heather Berridge, will be pounding the streets on July 9 and hope to

complete the course in about an hourand-a-half. Jackie Starr said: “All of us have lost relatives and have known people who have used the hospice. It’s not just the good work that the hospice does for patients, it’s the help it offers the relatives as well.” All five walkers are based at the offices of South Holland District Council in Priory Road, Spalding.

26 Mile Trek For Travel Agents Three colleagues from Lincolnshire Cooperative’s Spalding travel branch are pulling on their walking boots for a 26 mile hike in aid of Help for Heroes. Rachel Clifton (39) from Spalding, Cheryl Sullivan (22) from West Pinchbeck and Roxanne Murfitt (20) from Sutton Bridge are in training for the Avebury to Stonehenge walk which will take place on Sunday June 26th. All the money raised will go towards

Help for Heroes, which is Lincolnshire Co-operative’s Charity of the Year for 2011. Rachel, Assistant Manager at the Winsover Road branch, said: “As a team, we’ve taken on fundraising for charity before, including an abseil and even a sky dive. When we saw this walk, we thought it would be a good chance to challenge ourselves again in aid of Help for Heroes.“

Beware of Bogus Dyson Engineer Callers Genuine Dyson engineers are on hand to support you Dyson engineers clock up over three million miles a year visiting homes and workplaces to carry out service and repair work. They drive Dyson vans, wear a Dyson uniform and carry a Dyson ID. Call or email us if your Dyson vacuum is not functioning properly. A Dyson engineer will only visit you if you’ve pre-arranged a visit through our contact centre. We don’t ask anyone else to call you on our behalf If someone calls you to talk about your Dyson vacuum, check that they’re from Dyson. Unauthorised companies are cold-calling UK households - offering to carry out service or repair work. Because we are the UK’s best-selling vacuum manufacturer, there’s a one in three chance they will speak to a Dyson owner. Unscrupulous sales tactics Some unscrupulous businesses are making speculative calls offering cheap services. They offer to service Dyson vacuums for sums as little as £20. However, customers have told us that these visits actually end up costing them up to £150. Poor workmanship carried out by these engineers can also invalidate your guarantee. They regularly use fake

parts that don’t function properly and can cause damage that won’t be covered by your guarantee. There are even examples where the visitor has sabotaged Dyson vacuums in order to sell new machines. Dealing with bogus engineers If you think you have been contacted by a bogus engineer, or would like some help or advice, please email askdyson@dyson. or call a Dyson expert free on 0800 298 0298 (7am - 10pm, 7 days a week). The information we gather helps us build legal cases against companies employing misleading or fraudulent business practices. We also work with Trading Standards to stop companies operating illegally. Your Dyson guarantee All Dyson upright and cylinder vacuums are covered by our 5 year guarantee. During this time, all necessary replacement parts and labour are provided free of charge. If your Dyson vacuum is out of guarantee, you can book a £73 fixed price service from a Dyson engineer at . All work is guaranteed for 12 months. Our local authorised Dyson Dealer is BB Dyson. If you have any queries you can contact them on 01406 424688.

Pride in Holbeach Report Thanks to Lorraine Walker we are able to update you on Pride in Holbeach with her latest report and information about the group. “There are 8 of us in the group all volunteers. 3 of the group is Parish Councillors. This year is the first year we have grown our own plants. We bought them in as plug plants and grew them on. We had approximately 3,000 in total. My husband and myself looked after them in our own glass house. He and myself live at Carters park and he is the Park Manager there. All of the group got together to pot on the plants, plant up the town and we also made all the hanging baskets, 96 of them, my husband personally hanging everyone of them using a ladder. A few weeks before the judging someone put weed killer on 5 of the wooden tubs in the churchyard and killed all the plants off. They also sprayed some of our barrier boxes with an unknown substance which killed some more. We were very saddened by this but it made us even more determined to carry on with trying to do well in the East Midlands in Bloom competition. We have been encouraged by the many positive comments we have had from he public about how nice the town looks.

On judging day we were blessed with perfect weather. The judges don’t give anything away but we were heartened by some of their comments regarding our efforts. We are now keeping our fingers crossed for a good result when the awards are announced.

Take Part in Your ‘Quest for Gold’ 2,012 people will sign up by the Games next year.

We are now thinking about our autumn planting programme for which we are growing the plants from seeds and they have already been sown. We all work well together as a team and get together on a regular basis to discuss the projects we have in mind for the future. We hope to encourage more people to join the team and welcome everyone’s skill and experience. We are working to increase levels of recycling and sustainable planting in the town. One of our volunteers is working with some of the local schools to encourage the involvement of the children in improving the environment in which we live. We aren’t just ‘about flowers.’ We are about environmental responsibility through community involvement. Our aim is to encourage Pride in the town and make Holbeach a pleasant place to live.”

People in Lincolnshire can try all of the Olympic and Paralympic sports with a new 2012-inspired programme, Quest for Gold. Quest for Gold gives individuals aged 16 plus the opportunity to take part in all of the Olympic and Paralympic sports at clubs and leisure providers across the county. From archery and rowing to sailing and shooting, there’s something for everyone. Participants can take part in as many or as few of the 30 sports on offer, and the programme runs from now until the end of the 2012 Games in September next year. Individuals across Lincolnshire are already signing up to the programme, but Lincolnshire Sports Partnership hopes that

Quest for Gold costs £5.00 to sign up, but after the initial payment the majority of activities will be completely free (some may ask for donations for equipment if required), and 50% of your sign-up fee will be directly donated to the Lincolnshire Elite Athlete Programme (LEAP) which supports local, talented sportpeople. Even though the programme is for people aged 16+ years there is scope with some of the sports to bring younger friends and family if this is pre-arranged with the particular club/provider. Quest for Gold has been developed by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership as part of the 2012 Games Legacy Strategy for Lincolnshire. To sign-up to the programme and find out more information visit the website www., or contact Hanya on 01522 585 580.

Following on from the previous month’s magazine, Simply Holbeach received a letter regarding litter that is regularly dumped in the middle of Marshland’s Drive. I will be taking this up with South Holland District Council’s street scene team and copying it to the District Ward members, in case this area requires more litter bins or whether this requires enforcement of fly tipping, which will incur a fine if anyone is caught. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. August is holiday time for many. If you are having your holiday in the area or staying at home enjoying the hot weather, there is plenty to do. Young or old there is the Summer Fun Brochure available at the library, district council or online at There are weekly listings of holiday activities, arts, sports and entertainment. View the Sir Peter Scott Lighthouse at weekends throughout August, take the family to the gym, go sailing, do karate, listen to stories for the under 5’s, do family arts and crafts and of course there is Harry Potter in 3D at the South Holland Centre. See you there! If you like your food, a must visit is the South Holland Food Festival in Ayscoughfee Gardens over the weekend of August 13th and 14th. The best of local, county and regional food to savour, taste and enjoy. For more details see

If you are into your heritage make sure you note in your diary the Holbeach Cemetery Chapels open day on Sunday September 11th, 11am – 3pm. This is just one of 70 heritage venues open to the public between September 8th and 11th. Well worth a visit is the Spalding Gentleman’s Society open day on 10th September (10am -4pm). Founded in 1710 you can see Victoriana, 15th century manuscripts and a fascinating library. Follow this by a walk down the riverbank and visit the Old Blacksmith’s Shop, newly opened to the public which is a “Big Society” project! I am getting a few calls from people who are having difficulty in getting appointments on the Call-Connect Bus. I am investigating the cost of adding to the service in the Holbeach parish as clearly this is becoming a victim of its’ own success. If you are having any problems getting the time you want, let me know, as I need some evidence! There have been for some time a number of issues around who is responsible for what in Stukeley Gardens, with a lot of unsubstantiated claims that it is either the responsibility of Holbeach Parish Council and/or Lincolnshire County Council. I intend to have some documentary evidence one way or the other by the end of August, if not before, so that we can move on and get the jobs done that need doing, in particular who is responsible for the pruning of the shrubs and trees. Having listened to a number of young people I have been successful in getting funding for a teenage youth shelter with blue-tooth technology, like the one in Spalding. I am currently discussing an appropriate location but this should be in place by the end of September at the latest. I am also about to start fund raising for a skatepark similar to the one in Spalding, which will be led by the teenagers themselves. They have approached me and I will be working with them over the coming year to help them achieve their ambitious project. One thing I do know is that it will not be in Carter’s Park, so a venue will need to be found. If you know of any corporate sponsors out there, who might be willing to help, please do let me know. Enjoy the holidays!

Business Focus Holbeach Memorial Company is a family firm based in Holbeach Hurn who understand the difficulty of choosing the right memorial for your loved one. They offer a variable selection of memorials suitable for cemeteries and churchyards. Buying a memorial is something most bereaved families think is a traumatic task, but it can be made quite simple by visiting a sympathetic and diplomatic company that understands their loss and their requirements. Holbeach Memorial Company stock over 200 memorials in marble, granite, stone and slate. By importing their own materials they can offer affordable, competitive prices. The business was started in 1964, giving them some 47 years of experience with many thousands of satisfied customers. They can offer over 3,000 designs and even create special designs of one’s choice provided the design can be approved by the Incumbent (if a church yard) or the Burial Authority (if a cemetery).

Appointments are preferred as Holbeach Memorial Comany can give the customer their dedicated undivided attention, even showing the customer how their chosen wording would look like on the selected memorial. Their policy has always been to offer the same level of service to their customers that they would expect to receive for a member of their own family. Holbeach Memorial Company are members of NAMM (National Association of Memorial Masons) and BRAMM (British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons). They guarantee that their memorials meet health & safety requirements including any third party testing to BS8415:2005. Gary Huggins their memorial fixer has obtained his City & Guilds certificate of competence for fixing lawn and monolith memorials. How many of our readers know where Veterans Way is?  Veterans Way is situated next to the old cattle market in Boston, adjoining the war memorial. This is where some 38 veteran plaques have been sited by various

veteran associations in memory of their fallen comrades. All the plaques have been supplied with wording and coloured regimental engraved badges by our local stone masons at Holbeach Memorial Company; they have also redone most of the veteran’s plaques in our own remembrance garden in Ayscoughfee grounds. These two sites are really worth while visiting; where the craftsmanship can be seen first hand and everyone can pay their respects, those that gave their lives for our freedom should not be forgotten.

Top Tips For Private Tenants

by Diane Clay

Are you a private tenant living in poor housing conditions? Here are some top tips to help you understand your legal rights and work out   what action you might want to take: • As a tenant, you have the right to have the structure of your home kept in good repair by your landlord. Heating and hot water systems must also be kept in working order. Details about repair responsibilities are usually set out in a written tenancy agreement. • There may be several ways of getting repairs or improvements done if you need them. But you should always check what type of agreement you have with your landlords before you complain about housing conditions. Your landlords may try to evict you if you ask for repairs to be carried out so you need to know how easy it would be for them to do this. If in doubt, get advice from an experienced adviser at your local Citizens Advice Bureau or call the Shelter advice line (In England, Wales and Scotland, you can contact Shelter’s free housing advice helpline on 0808 800 4444 or visit Shelter’s website at: • The first step to getting repairs done is usually to talk to your landlords. It may be worth trying to negotiate with them, even if they do not have a legal duty to carry out a repair. Put your request in writing and keep a copy. • If talking to your landlords doesn’t work, don’t just stop paying your rent. You don’t have the right to withhold rent and you shouldn’t do this to try to force your landlords to do repairs. Your landlords could take legal action against you for rent arrears and you could lose your home. • If your property is in poor condition, your landlords may have broken the tenancy agreement or the law in not carrying out repairs. This means you may be able to take court action against them. But it’s really important to get advice first, in case your landlords try to evict you. If you do decide you want to take court action, you will need to give your landlords written notice of the repairs that need doing and you won’t be able to start court action until you have given your landlords reasonable time to carry out the repairs. • If you think the condition of the property is either affecting your health or causing a nuisance to others, you should complain to the Environmental Health Department of your local council. They should investigate and they have the power to order your landlords to do the necessary repairs. Local councils also have a duty to take action against landlords if they consider that housing conditions are not acceptable for people to live in. To find details of your local council, go to the Directgov website at:

Help with home improvements

You may be able to get a grant, loan or other type of help for home improvements from your local authority. However, you will need to get your landlord’s permission first.

The following tenants in England, Wales and Scotland, have the right to carry out and pay for improvements to the property they live in: • tenants in the private sector • tenants of local authorities • tenants of housing associations and other social landlords. You must get your landlord’s written agreement, but this cannot be unreasonably withheld. If your landlords refuse permission, they have to give their reasons in writing. You can challenge the refusal in court, where it will be their responsibility to prove that they are being reasonable in refusing permission. You may need the help of an experienced adviser in finding out whether you can carry out improvements.

Disabled tenants

If you are a disabled tenant you may be able to get a grant to make your home more suitable. For more information, consult your local Citizens Advice Bureau or Shelter (opposite) or check out If you’re a disabled tenant, you may be able to get help from the local authority to have alterations carried out to your home. You will first have to get the need for any alterations assessed by the social services department. Alterations could include the installations of a stair lift or hoist or adaptations of a of a bathroom or toilet. If you want to make alterations yourself to make your home more suitable, you will need to get permission from your landlord first. However, your landlord must not refuse permission without good reason.

Health & Beauty Crystal of the Month Lapis Lazuli Susan Yoxall of Fenchancements introduces us to a new crystal

This is a beautiful stone of deep blue flecked with gold/white veins that is capable of allowing us to unlock our inner self bringing balance and harmony into our lives. A powerful stone providing protection from negativity we encounter, allowing us to take charge of our lives and ourselves to promote the feelings of selfawareness, compassion and honesty. Lapis Lazuli teaches us the value of listening properly, also to have self-expression so we may communicate to those around us with empathy and clarity, without anger or confusion. It helps with bonding our relationships,

allowing us to express our true emotions and feelings. As a healing stone, Lapis Lazuli is said to help reduce bodily pain, especially migraine pain. It is said to help overcome depression, hearing loss, insomnia and vertigo. This stone can also be used for the treatment of respiratory problems, the nervous system and can help boost the immune system. It helps to lower blood pressure, purify the blood, and cleanse internal organs, bone marrow, thyroid and the throat. And we haven’t started on it’s spiritual properties!!

For more information and guidance visit Fenchantments at 14 Knight Street, Pinchbeck or call 01775 719461.

Family Fitness Made Fun by Kate Tarrant

After a busy day, exercise can be the last thing on our minds. And spending quality time as a family can seem even more of a challenge. In this 24/7 world that we live in, it can be hard to find time to eat as a family, let alone find a few hours to enjoy each other’s company. This month we look at how you can have fun with your family and get fit. No more slumping in front of the TV, no more computer games – it’s time to get out and have some fun!

The Benefits

Getting fit as a family should be an excuse to have some fun together. Aside from the obvious benefits of helping you to maintain a healthy weight, reducing stress and improving your energy levels, getting fit as a family means you can indulge in dedicated family time; it’s a chance for some quality time out in all your hectic schedules. And getting fit together means you have each other to keep you motivated!

Make a Date

Agree on a day and time that suits you all. What about setting aside a few hours over the weekend? If weekends are out, is there a week-day evening where you can all free up some time? Do any of you have time off in the week? Set a date and stick it on the calendar!

Fitness is Fun

There are so many ways that you can get fit together as a family – from taking up a dance or fitness class, to swimming and skating, or even joining a local sports group together: tennis, badminton, squash, cycling – the list is endless. Head down to your local gym to find out what’s offered for families.

For local groups and clubs, make sure you check out our ‘What’s On’ diary at www.simply-spalding. and www.simply-holbeach. You can also find local groups and classes at the back of this magazine. New activities are being added all the time, so be sure to keep up to date! If you don’t fancy joining a group or committing to a specific activity each week, why not make family days out an opportunity for fitness? A game of footy in the park, a walk through the woods, a walk along the beach, a local bike ride, a trip to a local nature reserve – to be ended with a healthy picnic! There are so many walks that you can do in Lincolnshire - check out lincolnshirewalks for some ideas. If the weather is good, tackle the garden together. Get that veggie patch in shape as a team! If you fancy going further a field, what about some hill walking? A mountain climb perhaps? Or some water sport activities? Have you tried horse riding? Pick day trips that involve getting out and about in the great outdoors – animal parks, a zoo, adventure playgrounds. Be sure to find something that you can all agree on - or take turns in trying each of your preferred activities.

Ideas for the Children

The first Wednesday in August was Playday, which is the national day for play celebrated every year. The day is organised to highlight the importance of play in children’s lives. According to Play England, 81% of adults believe that children playing outside helps improve community spirit. Do you need another excuse to go out and have some fun as a family? Last month the South Holland District Council published the Summer Fun 2011 guide – the 64-page brochure is packed with ideas to keep children entertained this summer, including sports activities. Copies can be picked up from the library, the South Holland Centre, Ayscoughfee Hall, community halls and sports centres.

Go On -   Have Some Fun

So what are you going to do this weekend? It’s time to reclaim week nights and weekends and have some fun!

r e n r o C s ’ t Pe Back to bunny basics Twitchy noses, cotton-ball tails and big floppy ears are the trademarks of one of the UK’s favourite pets - rabbits. Although easy to care for, bunnies have basic needs that must be met, and there have been speckled reports in the media recently that show a growing concern for rabbit welfare in the UK.

Keep em’ clean Rabbits spend a good portion of their days cleaning and do not like to be dirty. Their living environment and especially their toilet areas should be cleaned on a daily basis to ensure a healthy, comfortable environment.

So, in a bid to ensure you all have the necessary tools to care for your long-eared friend – welcome to our Bunny Basics where we’ll teach you what all bunnies need, whether lopeared, giant or dwarf!

The right habitat In the wild, a rabbit can roam an area as large as 30 tennis courts, keeping both mind and body active. Domesticated, rabbits are confined to a smaller territory and need extra stimulation to ensure they keep physically and mentally fit. Consider the hutch the rabbit’s bedroom, and as such, provide an adequate exercise area outside of the hutch where they are able to stretch their legs. A hutch should be wide enough that a rabbit can lie down and stretch comfortably and also tall enough that they are able to stand on their back legs and not have their ears touch the roof. If you own more than one rabbit, the hutch needs to be large enough that each rabbit could like down and stretch out at the same time, but also separate sleeping chambers should be built to allow the rabbits some time alone. Although social creatures, they also need their space! The hutch should provide shelter from the elements and be able to withstand extremes of temperature during hot and cold seasons. It should be free of draughts and as predator-proof as possible. When building a run, there’s no such thing as too big - rabbits will cover as much space as they are given! Ideally the run should be constructed on grass to recreate, as much as possible, their natural habitat. Make sure it is roofed and as predator-resistant as possible, and give them shade, boxes or tubes to hide in and an area to do some digging. A digging area can be made from sand or earth, but will need a secured bottom to ensure they don’t dig their way out of the safety of their run.

Behaviour Without stimulation, a rabbit can begin to exhibit signs of stress and depression such as fur pulling, acting aggressively, chewing excessively or retreating into hiding. Given a few simple tools rabbits can be easily stimulated and their daily lives much enriched. Make sure their living environment is interesting – provide plenty of objects for them to hide in, an area to dig and plenty of room to run and jump. Toys are a valuable addition to any rabbit’s lifestyle – Rooke’s have a variety on sale which their friendly staff will gladly help you browse through. Keep them social by letting them interact with other rabbits and spending time with them yourself. Rabbits are surprisingly intelligent and can even be clicker-trained with a little time and patience. Ensure their diet is well-rounded and promote their natural foraging ability by providing a variety of feed dispensers to make their eating routine more of a challenge. As rabbits can become bored quite easily, items in their environment should be rotated on a regular basis to keep their living quarters fresh and exciting.

23 High Street, Spalding PE11 1TX Tel: 01775 713005

Friends It is not natural for a rabbit to live alone and so rabbits should be kept in pairs or groups. An ideal pair is a neutered female and a neutered male – two neutered males are likely to fight over territory. Introducing new rabbits to a pair should be strictly supervised, and advice sought from a professional before making introductions. Young rabbits should be socialised from an early age (from a week upwards), both with people and with other rabbits to ensure they grow into confident, happy adults.

Vaccinating and health concerns Just like cats and dogs, rabbits require annual vaccinations to protect them from infectious disease. Each year your rabbit needs to be vaccinated against Myxomatosis – a virus spread by biting insects leading to an upper respiratory infection which can be potentially fatal – and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease or VHD – a disease that shuts down the internal organs and almost always causes death. VHD is caused by direct or indirect contact with infected rabbits. A regular flea and fly treatment program can help reduce risks of contracting this nasty disease. Other health concerns for rabbits are Flystrike caused by flies laying eggs on sore areas of a rabbit, which then hatch and burrow into the flesh. Flystrike can be avoided by keeping the environment and the rabbit itself clean and ensuring the rabbit is active enough that it avoids obesity and is therefore unable to clean its own fur. Fleas affect rabbits just as they do cats and dogs and so a regular preventative program should be routine. Another parasite affecting rabbits is Encephalitozoon cuniculi (E. cuniculi), which can cause paralysis and tremors if left untreated. Spores are transferred through contaminated urine so good hygiene practices will help prevent an infection. It is estimated that three-quarters of pet rabbits visiting vets have dental health concerns. A rabbit’s teeth can grow rapidly and although in the wild they become naturally worn, the soft diets fed to domesticated rabbits are ultimately leading to dental complications. A diet rich in forage and hi-fibre foods is the most effective means of preventing dental problems for your bunny.

Diet The highest percentage of a rabbit’s diet should consist of hay and grass. Your rabbit should have a constant supply of this on hand and it can be made more interesting by hiding food around their living area to provide them with stimulation and keep their minds active. Rabbits need a high proportion of fibre in their diet, of which there are two kinds – digestible and indigestible. Digestible fibre provides them with the nutrients needed to live healthily and the indigestible fibre helps their digestive system to function properly. It is strongly advised to avoid muesli-type foods for rabbits, as they tend to pick and choose which elements they eat and not receive a balanced diet as a result. There are plenty of tools available to keep your bunnies hopping and happy. Any of the representatives at Rooke’s will be happy to help you with any questions you may have.

Happy hopping!

School by Kate Tarrant

No sooner do the summer holidays arrive and it’s time to start thinking again about getting ready for the new school term. To help you with your preparations, we’ve put together a handy checklist.

First day of school

If it will be your child’s first day at primary school in September, the school will already have supplied you with lots of advice and information about making the transition and preparing for the big day. You can help create excitement by involving your child in decisions like choosing pencil cases and new shoes, and visiting the school together to build up a familiarity of the surroundings. If you know other children that are starting the same school, you could organise an afternoon get together in the holidays to settle nerves (both yours and the children’s!).

preparation as much as possible can help to settle nerves and build excitement. If your child will be using the school bus for the first time, make sure you know where the bus stops, and the timetable. Have a trial run too, if you can.

Starting secondary school is also a big step. Don’t underestimate your child’s anxiety - answer concerns and reassure them with worries they might have. Homework will be introduced more heavily now, so make sure your child has a quiet space to work in. Again, involving them in the

It’s the summer holidays, so who wants to follow rules anyway? But as the holidays near their end, it will be time to start putting routine back into bedtimes and mealtimes, so getting up early to catch that school bus is not such a horrible shock!

Involving children

New backpacks and lunch boxes, stationery supplies and books might need to be purchased. Involving children in this preparation can calm nerves and encourage their own planning for school.

School uniforms

Do they still fit? No doubt some alterations will be needed. Do you need to add name tags? What about school shoes? Find out if you need to buy any particular sports equipment for the new term. Now might be the time to extract the mouldy PE kit from under the bed! If your child is starting

primary or secondary school in September, make sure you have a complete uniform list – and don’t leave buying it until the last minute. Ask if the school is planning a sale of second-hand uniforms – often they do, and it helps to keep cost down.

Has all the holiday homework been done? Does your child need to prepare for any classes in the new term? Do you need to buy any particular books? For older students, have all the essays and coursework been completed?

Getting to school

Is your child walking to school? Have you practised the route? Do you need to refresh them on cycle safety? Is your child going on the school bus? Has the bus pass arrived? Do you need to book taxis?

The night before

Check uniforms are complete and bags and books are present. Does your child need lunch money or are you making packed lunches? Don’t overdo the preparations the night before - be upbeat and positive!

Summer Spots by Hayley Willerton

August is the month when high summer turns to late summer. Schools are on their break and thoughts turn to visits to the seaside. This is a great time to search along the foreshore, and investigate rock pools for goby fish, shrimps, crabs, sea anemones, snails and shellfish.

the dry ground can cause problems for the ground feeding birds. Early in the month grey squirrels are impatient and insist on cracking open the pale green hazel nuts, even though there is little reward inside. They can be heard chattering and squealing at one another. Aggressive confrontations can lead to tree top chases.

If the weather is hot, the countryside starts to look parched and tired, as grasses brown and even tree leaves start to wilt. In the hedgerows the blackberries have already started to ripen, going from green to red then finally black and delicious. Elderberries also ripen and are feasted on by hungry birds such as starlings and blackbirds.

Hot days also bring the restful sound of grasshoppers calling (‘stridulating’) from the long grass, advertising their territories. They are difficult to spot due to their green or brown colour, but soon hop to reveal themselves if disturbed, only to disappear again. In Britain the species most likely to be spotted are the common green, common field and the meadow grasshopper.

Other berries are ripening too, such as hawthorn (‘haws’), sloes and rose hips. These will provide sustenance for many species through the harsh winter months. For now food is plentiful, although

Parks and gardens: As the breeding season draws to a close birds will return to the garden but as some are moulting may rather skulk around. Put out water for the birds now as other sources may

not be available. Woodlands: Woods are quiet except for the occasional robin starting to sing its plaintive and melancholy Autumn song. Some trees may start to show changes in colour. Seeds are ripening and soon large-leaved lime, sycamore, field maple and hornbeam will drop their winged seeds. In August though, the leaves are all still green and growing. Arable and hedgerows: Invasions of house sparrows may be a thing of the past now, but they can still be seen as the wheat ripens, enjoying the feast. Whilst the flocks of yester year are not so likely to be seen, they do seem to be making a slight comeback. Let’s make the most of the remaining weeks of summer and the glorious nature that is on our doorsteps. Please send in any pictures of your finds to

Bringing Comfort to Your Bedroom The owner of Fitzgerald’s Bed Centre Paul Fitzgerald says, more and more people are now very concerned about the correct support they are getting from their beds and the importance of a good nights sleep. Finding the correct mattress and matching your weight to the different firmness is the key to this. It is advised the lighter you are the softer the mattress required and the heavier, the firmer required. Paul understands beds are also a fashion item to many people and offers many differing styles including wooden, leather and metal bedsteads, but storage beds are still very popular as a bed can take up a lot of space in the bedroom. Being a bed specialist allows Fitzgerald’s Beds the ability be able to cater for all needs from bunk beds, guest beds, memory foam and pocket spring beds going up to the very best hand made beds from top brand name such as Vi-spring, Silentnight, Myers, Slumberland and many more. Barry Hewitt, Spalding Store Manager

After opening his first shop 18 years ago in Bourne, he decided to open in Stamford 12 years later, and just 3 years later opened the third store in Spalding on Westlode Street close to Homebase. The location is ideal as there is free parking outside the shop and as with the other two stores Store Manager, Barry Hewitt offers the same top quality beds at very low prices. When we asked Paul about the future of Fitzgerald’s Bed Centre, he had a very positive outlook and intends to build on his success to provide Spalding with an outstanding bed specialist.

shop smart, shop local Shopping local saves you money Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us all that sole traders = expensive, but the evidence just isn’t there to back this up . If you add in travel, parking costs, fees to transport larger items home and your time, the overall cost is often much higher. Shopping locally retains our community People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns and villages but don’t equate this to how they spend their money. Shops will only survive if customers spend locally – so if you want a vibrant town centre, where people can socialise as well as shop, shop locally. Shopping local retains our distinctiveness Many town centres in Britain look the same with franchises and multinationals. Our independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Independent shops keep traditional local products alive. House & Home

Create the perfect window dressing by Sue Hessom

indows are the gateway to our homes so when we come to dress them we should give the process some serious thought and consideration. Dressing your windows to enhance your internal décor is the easy bit, but what about the functionality and appropriateness of your desired dressings? After all, window treatments can’t just look good; they have to be functional too.

Ground floor rooms normally require more privacy than first floor rooms, especially if you have houses opposite or live on a main road. Think about your options - do you want something that offers complete privacy at all times or would you be happy to have clear windows during the day providing you can have complete privacy during the night? Consider how busy the road is and the level of footfall. Give special attention to any bedrooms and think about what kind of privacy they would need; you wouldn’t want any window dressings that allowed silhouettes to be seen!

Understands how sunlight works in each individual room of your home. Are the rooms north or south facing? North facing rooms may require thermal window dressings to help keep the room warmer during the winter months, but don’t go too heavy as this will block out natural daylight and may leave the room feeling unwelcoming and dark. Rooms that have direct sunlight need careful consideration. Direct sunlight can fade rich colours over time, so consider how much sunlight you want to allow in. Think about your décor and the cost of your possessions. Want to allow sunlight and protect your things? Then consider light filtering materials such as muslin. Once you understand the functions required, start to consider style. Long gone are the days when net curtains where the main ingredient of a well-dressed window. Curtains, shades, blinds, shutters or any combination of these can help create and complete an interior look.

When choosing your style of window treatment, think about the style of your room. Is it traditional, contemporary, eclectic or country? Do you want to introduce a style that can be repeated throughout the home?

Be Creative

Create your own individual look by thinking outside the box. 1. Use MDF to create custom valances – especially effective in bedrooms. Can be painted to match walls or papered to match a feature wall. Use a jigsaw to create your own individual design. 2. Venetian blinds can be teamed with fine pieces of muslin to help soften edges. Put both panels of muslin over the window and secure to the curtain pole with ‘clip’ rings. Gently pull each panel of muslin to opposite sides of the window, causing a natural ‘cross-over’ drape effect at the top of the window. Use decorative, luxurious tie-backs to keep the muslin in place. The venetian blind is then raised to the bottom of the drape to allow daylight in, and then dropped back in place for night time privacy. 3. Extra-long curtains look great in bedrooms as they fall elegantly onto the floor. This will only work if the curtains are for decoration only. Covering the radiator when closing the curtains is not ideal, especially in the winter months. Also it’s not a great idea if you have to walk past the curtains as you could trip over the excess

material. Combine them with blackout roman blinds/ roller blinds or vertical blinds for an effective, stunning look. 4. If you have an extra - wide window, such as the kitchen, consideration needs to be given to the weight of the window dressings. Having one huge venetian blind could cause problems, especially if the blind is raised and lowered on a daily basis. Why not consider getting several venetian blinds? This works really well and looks effective as you can have the blinds raised at different heights.

Colours and Textures

Getting the right colour, pattern and texture is paramount to your dressing success. Think about the focus in your rooms. If you have introduced a really strong feature wall, then use a colour that blends in with the rest of the room – whether this is a light or dark colour. This doesn’t mean that you can’t use a mixture of styles or a mixture of different materials and textures to create a functional yet stunning window treatment. If you have plenty of patterns then keep the window dressing plain and simple. The idea here is to enhance the look of the room, not add to it. Likewise, if your room is very simple with clean lines consider soft, voluptuous muslin teamed with wooden blinds. If you have the room, why not consider wooden shutters for a simple yet effective look?

VW Passat S 1.6-litre TDI BlueMotion Technology 105PS  by Tim Barnes-Clay A FEW years ago if you had asked a director to give up their large company car and accept a smaller, more fuel-efficient alternative, you may have been looking for a new job soon afterwards. Now things are different and greener cars are now a perfectly acceptable executive option. The seventh generation VW Passat is a good example of what constitutes a frugal yet upmarket managerial motor. The ever-popular German mile-muncher takes on not only a refreshing appearance both inside and out, with every panel apart from the roof being new, but also adopts the latest technologies and efficiency measures to make it one of the most advanced and economical of cars in its class. Every diesel engine is now badged as a BlueMotion Technology product and is

equipped with battery regeneration and Stop/Start systems as standard. A six-speed manual gearbox has been fitted to the 1.6-litre TDI 105 PS engine for the first time; the result is that the model, on test here, will return 65.7 mpg on the combined fuel cycle and emit 114g/km of CO2. And what’s more it is VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) tax band C meaning that road tax is free for the first year. Pretty cost-effective or what? Three trim levels are available for the new Passat - the S, SE and Sport. Additional equipment added to the new car over the outgoing version includes an iPod interface and leather multifunction steering wheel for the S model. The SE trim level gains an eight-speaker digital radio, Bluetooth connectivity and a new driver fatigue detection system; while at the top of the range the Sport model gains touch screen satellite navigation.

All Passats are fitted with six airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system), ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) and WOKS (whiplashoptimised head restraints) as standard. In

addition, the Passat is the quietest and most refined to be made by VW yet. Thicker glass is fitted to the side windows while the windscreen features a thin plastic film sandwiched between two layers of the glass to help reduce noise transmission. The front bulkhead incorporates increased sound deadening which, combined with the latest generation of common rail diesel and TSI petrol engines, aims to cut the engine noise entering the interior of the Passat. Smooth, solid and classy are words that come to mind for the 1.6-litre TDI base model. The cabin is nicely appointed, with lots of rubber and soft touch materials but very little in the way of cheap plastics. The interior silver trim looks ok, but it is obviously just spray painted, so I would question how durable that will be, but everything else looks fairly hard-wearing. There is also a neat analogue clock in the centre of the dash - evocative of a late 1970s top-of-the-range Ford Granada. It suits it. Honest! The VW feels well-built, and the seats are comfortable. And, as you would expect from a Passat, leg and headroom is very good while the boot is gigantic. Behind the wheel, it feels punchy enough, but it is quite a heavy car, so don’t expect rocket-ship

acceleration - the 2.0-litre engine will be a much better match for the body if being first off the lights matters to you. Nevertheless, for £19,655 on the road, the lower powered entry-level diesel is great value for anyone wanting a sophisticated, fuel saving commuting machine that will double up as a roomy family car.
