Welcome

to the September issue

This month has been a busy one in the Hammond household as we have welcomed our second child, Nancy. All is going well and we are adapting to being a family of four…the car boot is certainly getting tested to the limit with a dog and two young children, every journey is a challenge of how can we fit everything in! In this issue we are looking at the return to normality of the school routine. We offer advice on how to help your children with their homework, how to deal with going back to school as well as what school clubs there are available locally. September is foodie month, with National Organic Month and British Food Fortnight. Make sure you turn to page 22 for inspiration to liven up your dinner plate. Locally we have so many towns and villages with unique businesses and activities on offer, this month we are looking at what Freiston has on offer, next time you’re wondering where to visit think about supporting our local amenities. As much as I hate to think about it winter is just around the corner and that means preparation at home. One of the areas we often forget is upgrading our heating – why not think about installing underfloor heating when you next need to make changes to your system, check out our guide on page 25. But before the dark nights and weather change all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and what remains of the summer weather!

Welcome to Nancy Ham

NEWS New kitchen for Old Leake Community Centre Groups, organisations and individuals are benefiting from an all new kitchen at Old Leake Community Centre installed thanks to grant funding of more than £17,000. Until the upgrade this summer, the 35-year-old hall had not had any significant improvements to the kitchen since it was built. Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service supported the community centre committee to find funds and complete successful applications for the grants. Chairman Gordon Potter said: “This is very exciting for us and something we have been working towards for a number of years. “The centre is well used by the community and we hope these improvements help make it more attractive for people to hire too which helps to bring in income and keep it running.” Inspire-Lincs uses the centre daily in its work with adults with learning disabilities. It is also the base of a monthly luncheon club for pensioners, which, when it launched in February last year, attracted 28 people. At its Christmas meal there were 106. Other users of the centre include Brownies and keep fit classes. The community centre was awarded £10,000 from Awards for All Big Lottery Fund and £7,000 from Asda Foundation. Lincolnshire Co-op at Old Leake also donated £250. Mrs Ali Willetts, founder of InspireLincs and member of Old Leake Community Centre Committee, said: “Without LCVS I don’t think I would ever have located the funding to go for. They were a tower of strength. “They helped me sit down and really think about what this community centre offers and it was really quite eye-opening to consider and describe in our grant applications just how important it is and how people are involved in it.” For more information visit www. lincolnshirecvs.org.uk , email enquiry@lincolnshirecvs.org.uk or call 01205 510888.

Egyptian Paralympians Boston has maintained its Egyptian links formed during the 2012 Paralympics when team members trained at the town’s Princess Royal Sports Arena. A mainstay of the association was Pauline Chapman, Boston Borough Council’s executive assistant to the corporate management team. She had the job in 2012 of being lead volunteer looking after the Egyptian para athletes during their time in Boston. Pauline went beyond her duties ensuring the visitors were introduced to the best of Boston and Lincolnshire, including traditions such as a trip to the seaside and fun in the amusement arcades. Since the athletes return to Egypt, Pauline, who had made lifelong friends, recently met up with some of them again at the Para Athletic World Championships in London. Pauline said: “We got on really well during our time together in 2012 and we promised to stay in touch, and we have done. We also promised that if ever we got the opportunity to meet again we would, and five years later we have. Five out of the original “Boston Six” were competing at the world championships. “I received a late-night phone call from Ibrahim Badr saying they were coming to London and would love to meet up. When we arrived at the hotel Ibrahim was waiting for us and quickly called the others to join him. We had lots of hugs and smiles and they were introduced to my husband, Glen, who they didn’t meet when they were here in 2012 – and everyone insisted on calling him Mr Glen. The team also generously brought me some gifts from Egypt.” Over the next two days they caught up on each others’ news and shared family pictures. Pauline and Glen also met the head coach, Dr Hamdy, who was in Boston in

2012. They also met Dr Hayat Khattab, President of the Egyptian Paralympics Committee, who said the athletes had told her all about Pauline and had said that Boston pretraining 2012 was their best ever because of her assistance. “I felt very humbled by this, but extremely proud to have put Boston on the map,” said Pauline. “We have been messaging since that time and I know we will continue to stay in touch for many years to come.” Ibrahim Badr and Ibrahim Abdelwareth secured bronze in the men’s discus and men’s shot put respectively. Mostafa Mohammed (100m, 200m and 400m sprints) and Metawa Abou Elkhir (discus) both securing respectable fourth places in their events and Mohammed Komal fifth in his discus event. Yader Abdelaziz Elsayed was not part of the original Boston team, but was quickly introduced, having already secured bronze in the javelin. He gave Pauline his medal to try on.

Bloomin’ great Boston boosts More people are recognising the beneficial impact of Boston in Bloom and showing their faith in the project by backing it with cash. The 2018 campaign has received major boosts from the White Hart Hotel and Boston Seeds. The Coaching Inn Group, which owns The White Hart Hotel, is making £2,000 available. It is hoped this will help complete the Art Decostyle garden in Central Park, helping mark its centenary in 2019 Boston Seeds has made £1,000 worth of seed and bulbs available to the Bloom group to enhance the local environment. And Dudley Bryant and Ralph Ottey are giving £2,000 in tranches for planters, trees and an arts project. Alison Fairman, chairman of Boston in Bloom, said: “It’s fantastic that local companies and individuals are recognising

the value of Boston in Bloom and its impact on the town and the local community.” Cllr Claire Rylott, Boston Borough Council’s portfolio holder for open spaces said: “With the East Midlands in Bloom awards just round the corner, it’s brilliant news that local businesses are backing Boston in Bloom. We are grateful for their generous support, particularly at the current time of austerity when public resources are very limited .” Boston will be hoping for its third gold award in September when it hosts the East Midlands in Bloom presentations at Boston Stump. In Bloom judges toured the town last month (July) to assess it and commented afterwards that they had been impressed. Since Boston first entered the competition it has received a bronze, silver, silver gilt and two gold awards.

Lincolnshire Author Writes About His Experiences Flying the Phantom During the Cold War in Fascinating New Book Boston author David Gledhill joined the RAF as a navigator in 1973. After training, he flew the F4 Phantom on squadrons in the UK and West Germany. He was one of the first aircrew members to fly the F2 and F3 Air Defence Variant of the Tornado on its acceptance into service and served for many years as an instructor on the Operational Conversion Units of both the Phantom and the Tornado. He commanded the Tornado Fighter Flight in the Falkland Islands and has worked extensively with the armed Forces of most NATO nations. He has published many books and has used his knowledge of the era and his own personal experiences to write his latest book, Phantom in the Cold War. This book focuses on predominantly on the aircraft’s role as an air defence fighter, exploring the ways in which it provided the British contribution to the Second Allied Tactical Air Force at RAF Wildenrath, the home of Nos. 19 and 92 Squadrons during the Cold War. As with his previous books, the author, who flew the Phantom operationally, recounts the thrills, challenges and consequences of operating this sometimes temperamental jet at extreme low-level over the West German countryside, preparing for a war which everyone hoped would never happen. Written by an author with first-hand experience of flying this aircraft, this book should have great appeal to any aviation and Cold War enthusiast.

aving housing which is fit for purpose is a serious matter, and Boston Borough Council takes seriously its responsibility to ensure residents have a roof over their heads which meets accepted modern standards.

How seriously? Ask the defendant in court recently whose accommodation was found to be so far below par it actually presented a risk to the lives of tenants. The court agreed with the council and its inspection team and ordered him to pay a total of £58,000. More recently he was back in court appealing against both his conviction and sentence. Despite his appeal being upheld in four of the 17 charges he was then ordered to pay an increased amount of more than £74,000. This prosecution followed a joint action by the council and the fire and rescue service and revealed the property in Boston to be used as an unlicensed HMO (House in Multiple Occupation) with serious hazards, such as a fire exit route being blocked and a fire alarm being disconnected. Cables had also been trailed from room to room to provide tenants with electricity. One had been fed through a hole in a ceiling into a bathroom to power kitchen equipment. The council, and its partner agencies, which include the police, will not tolerate this treatment of residents. The council launched its rogue landlords initiative early in 2014 and it has been hailed by a housing minister as “a good council looking to do the right thing by its local residents”. The scheme has twice received additional Government funding. Some of the worst offenders, who failed to heed advice and warnings, have ended up in court and faced substantial fines and costs. The definition of an HMO is any property with three or more occupants forming two or more households and sharing amenities (bathroom/kitchen). A mandatory licensable HMO is one that has three or more storeys and five or more occupants forming two or more households sharing amenities. The Government at the moment is redefining the threestorey element such that all properties, regardless of storeys, will meet the mandatory licensing criteria should it have five or more people forming two or more households and sharing amenities. These changes will come into effect in the near future. One of the biggest concerns is electrical systems – around ten per cent of domestic fires in Great Britain are caused by dangerous household wiring and 16 per cent of renters have experienced problems with

electrical hazards. Those responsible for HMOs are reminded that every fixed electrical installation has to be inspected and tested by a qualified person at intervals not exceeding five years and a certificate obtained specifying the test results. But the really good news is the number who have heeded our advice and made improvements to the benefit of their tenants. They have been able to enjoy living safe and secure in accommodation which is clean, warm, free from hazards and equipped to acceptable modern standards. Besides routine inspections the council is dependent on receiving information from tenants. It has set up a confidential hotline - 01205 314333 - to gather more information about rogue landlords. Callers to the hotline number will be asked to record their concerns about a property, landlord or letting agent in the borough. They will need to give the address of the property, a brief account of the issues and, if known, the name of the landlord. Callers will not need to leave their own details, but it may prove useful for borough council housing officers should any additional information be required. They do not have to give this information, but if they chose to do, it will be kept strictly confidential. There may be occasions when the information is shared with Rogue Landlord partners - the police and the Gangmasters Licensing Authority. Please do not put off calling the hotline if you have concerns - it could be a matter of life and death. This is all part of our policy of cracking down on landlords who fail to offer a good standard of accommodation that is properly maintained in order to drive up housing standards in Boston. There are many good landlords, but sadly there are some who see profit before people and will take advantage of sometimes vulnerable people and have little regard for their wellbeing. These are the ones we are targeting, and these are the ones we want people to call the hotline about. Since the council’s rogue landlord project started in 2014, the council has: • Inspected 682 properties; • Issued 694 notices in advance of or pursuant to these inspections and • Issued 80 formal ‘works’ notices. Cllr Martin Griggs, Cabinet member for housing, property and community, Boston Borough Council

Advice

A young person’s guide to Citizens Advice: by Will Cressey, A Level student at Sleaford Joint Sixth Form

C

oming to the end of year 12 meant for me, as well as many other 17 year old students, finding a work experience placement. I had been told by my school that work experience was an important part of becoming ‘workplace-ready’ and that it helps students to learn new skills in order to become more employable. As a politics and sociology student, I wanted to undertake a placement in an organisation relevant to these studies. I was therefore delighted to be accepted by Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire (CAML) to spend a week during the summer at their Boston & Sleaford offices. Before I started work at Citizens Advice, I did some research about the organisation. I found out that my local office was an independent charity providing free legal information and advice but what I didn’t know was that the service is staffed almost entirely by volunteers. I assumed, to volunteer at Citizens Advice you needed to be an ex-solicitor or of a similar professional background. However, when I got to meet many of the 100+ volunteers who work at the local offices, I was surprised to find that they come from a wide range of backgrounds and ages, such as parents & grandparents, people who are retired, those who are working or others who like me who are students or unemployed and looking for work experience. It was great to see that everyone had a shared goal - to help people to find a way forward, whatever their problem,

and I began to understand why people volunteer for the service. For example, whilst working as a receptionist, I helped a lady to obtain food from the local food bank. A delay in her benefit payment left her without food for her family. Seeing the relief on her face knowing that she was able to feed her children gave me a real sense of satisfaction and pride that I was able to make a difference. Before joining the service I felt that as a 17 year old and therefore not entitled to vote, that young people like me didn’t have a voice in society and that the current system was unfair. For example: • At 16 I can go into the army, but I have to wait another 2 years to go into combat on a video games console. • I can be taxed on my income at any age, yet I have to be 18 to vote on the rates of these taxes and what they should be spent on. Frustratingly, if too much tax is taken from my earnings, I have to ask my parents to claim it back for me. • To watch an explicit film I have to be 18 yet, ironically, the legal age of consent is 16. These laws are not only conflicting and confusing for young people like me, but I feel they jeopardise our voices in society. I now know that Citizens Advice gives me and other young people this voice. They use clients’ experiences and stories

to campaign for positive change for everyone. They speak up about the policies and services that are unfair and cause people problems. I also learnt that Citizens Advice provides free, confidential and impartial advice on a whole range of subjects which affect young people. Their goal is to help everyone find a way forward, whatever problem they face. People come to them with all sorts of issues. Next year, I will be starting university. As there is a Citizens Advice office in most towns and cities, I now know that they will be there for me if I experience problems with renting accommodation, part-time employment, money or budgeting. At the end of my work experience, I realised that my school was right. It provided a great opportunity to build useful skills that can’t be taught in the classroom, as well providing contacts that I otherwise would not be exposed to. I’m really grateful for the experience, and I am now intending to continue working with CAML as a volunteer, providing me with, I hope, a continued feeling of accomplishment and great experience for my personal statement and CV.

“Before joining the service I felt that as a 17 year old and therefore not entitled to vote, that young people like me didn’t have a voice in society and that the current system was unfair...”

Library news Adult Book Choice Between You and Me - By Lisa Hall ‘They say every marriage has its secrets, but no one sees what happens behind closed doors. Sal and Charlie are married with a young daughter called Maggie. Sal stays at home and looks after Maggie while Charlie is a high flying lawyer looking for promotion.’ To say Charlie is controlling is putting it mildly and there were lots of aspects of this book that made for

very uncomfortable reading. Lisa Hall’s description of the bullying that goes on in this marriage is disturbing and thought provoking. This is a difficult review to write without giving too much away. You need to read this book without any preconceived ideas, so keep away from too many reviews. If you enjoy psychological thrillers that are very hard to put down, this is the one for you.

Children and Hobbies The benefits of engaging in a hobby and how to encourage your child to take up a hobby. As adults we know if we spend time on an activity at which you are highly capable and interested in, then you are likely to be a lot happier and healthier than those people who don’t. The same can be said for children.

How to figure out what hobby your child may be interested in: If your child has not yet developed a hobby, try to help him or her figure out what they are interested in by observing them. Ask questions about their likes and dislikes. Introduce a wide

Family life

Family Life variety of activities and look for the activity they are highly capable and show an interest in. Once decided on a particular hobby ensure you show your support by getting involved with them.

Here are some further benefits for children who engage in hobbies: • Children learn to entertain themselves as hobbies keep them focused and busy. • Boosts self esteem to be involved with an activity that makes a child feel competent. • Children learn goal setting and decision making. • Hobbies can teach self discipline, patience and practise. • More time spent on a hobby means less time spent on digital media. It makes it easier for parents to limit digital media time when their child has a hobby. • Hobbies can have an educational value and kids develop a hunger for knowledge (to know more about the hobby) without realising it. • Hobbies can lead to lifetime career choices or lifetime passions • Children with hobbies are more interesting to other children and this improves their interpersonal skills and general personality development. They are also likely to make more friends especially if they join a club where the other children are interested in the same activity or hobby. • Hobbies can bring parents and children together and strengthen family bonds. • Working on a hobby gives a child “down time”, helps with stress relief, and generally makes a child feel good. • Children involved with hobbies are less likely to become involved in destructive or unhealthy activities as teenagers, such as turning to alcohol and drugs for entertainment value.

Hobbies can include: Colouring and painting, dancing, astronomy, building models, playing an instrument, participating in a sport, reading books, stamp, coin or currency note collecting, rock collecting, photography, gardening, lego building, trading cards, horse riding, drama, swimming, football, gymnastics, rugby, scrapbooking, balloon twisting, sailing, hockey, computing, needlecrafts, mosaics, pottery and lots more. There are so many groups, clubs and classes locally where children can try different activities and see what they enjoy. It can also help with childcare when organised through the school as many run immediately after school on the premises, so you know your child is doing something they enjoy at the same time as allowing you to stay longer at work! We’ll Meet Again

T

museum

he We’ll Meet Again museum project was started in 2009 by Paul and Linda Britchford, the idea was to give children a better understanding of life during the war using hands on education. When we first started the museum it was mobile and we would take nearly two ton of wartime memorabilia into schools, setting up would take four hours and the same to pack away, this resulted in days often starting at 3am and finishing at 10pm, these long days were rewarded by the results we had with the children and impact on their learning about the WW2 subject. In 2016 our efforts were recognised by the government; former Chancellor George Osborne commended us on our level of commitment to education and fund raising for Ex-servicemen.

of coastal defence structures in the country, with pill boxes, gun emplacements and anti- aircraft battery, these wartime building’s will be incorporated into the children’s learning days at the museum using role-play and revolving activities. The museum will offer Education, also venue hire for different groups on selected days and is open to the public Friday Saturday Sunday 10am-4pm. Paul and Linda would like to thank friends and family for all their support during this testing time also our loyal group of volunteers, without the support of these people the museum would never have come to fruition. A very special thanks to North Sea Camp for supplying skilled labour to help us complete this unique project.

We would also like to thank the RSPB who have granted us permission to use their land to visit the gun emplacements and WW2 buildings in the name of education. Paul and Linda can be contacted on Tel :01205270473 Mobile:07903529614 or you can visit the museum Shore Road, Freiston,PE22 0LY Boston, Lincolnshire. Find us on facebook Well-Meet-Again-WW2-Museum-Freiston

On the morning of the budget 2016 we had a phone call from the Treasury in London explaining that we had been awarded the sum of £200,000 to kick start our static museum at Freiston Shore, Boston, the location was chosen due to land being offered by local farmer J.Bland. This unique museum would aid education for children learning about WW2 and also house our vast personal collection for the public to enjoy. After nearly two years working on the site, we opened on 12th August 2017. The museum site in situated next to some of the best examples 18 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Banish the Holiday Weight Gain

W

e have all done it, booked a 2 week all inclusive holiday and for the first day we eat the salad and fruit but by day three the cakes have lured us in as well as those yummy cocktails after lying by the pool all day. Before you know it you’re back home and it’s like cramming sardines in a can to get your favourite jeans on. So, what can you do to reverse the gain?

Flush Away Bloat A lot of the weight gain that we put on throughout the holiday season - some of it’s bloat because it takes a lot of calories to put on fat - so if we stay hydrated, we can easily flush some of the extra sodium and bloat from our body. Additionally, if we drink a lot of water, we don’t get those false hunger cues, and water is very important for our metabolism, which is important for weight loss. Drinking 500ml of water increases your metabolic rate by 30 percent. Don’t go overboard though as too much water can be dangerous!

Think Fresh It’s as simple as this: Every time you eat a meal, incorporate something fresh too. Start your day with veggies with your eggs or have a salad at lunch and at least one vegetable at dinner. It’s important to have veggies throughout the

day - they’re really high in fibre, which will help keep you full, and they’re really low in calories. I always say to fill half your plate with vegetables.

Avoid Empty Calories And Simple Carbs When choosing post-holiday foods, stay away from items that have low nutritional value like simple carbs and empty calories. These types of foods include cookies, cakes, bagels, baked goods, breakfast cereal, syrups, and soda. Instead focus on complex carbs and “brown foods” like whole wheat, farro, quinoa, and brown rice.

Keep Your Drinks “Clean” Cutting alcohol is a really easy way to cut calories, and if you’re not ready to cut alcohol, then at least cut the mixers. Try and keep it clean.

Think Before Going Gluten-Free Do you have celiac disease? Then yes, a gluten-free diet is important. However, if you’re just looking to lose weight, gluten-free isn’t necessarily going to help you. In fact, it could hinder your weight-loss goals. Gluten-free is great if you don’t know how to cut out the carbs that are in your life, but the tricky thing about that is there are a lot of gluten-free substitutes that are full of rubbish. Glutenfree

Migraine Awareness Week Sun 3rd September 2017 - Sat 9th September 2017 Migraine Awareness Week is marked each year to highlight the facts about migraine and reduce stigma. The week begins on the first Sunday in September. Migraine affects 1 in 7 people, that’s over eight million people in the United Kingdom alone, making it more prevalent than diabetes, epilepsy and asthma combined. The World Health Organisation recognises migraine as one of the most disabling lifetime conditions yet awareness and understanding is low. Migraine is a complex neurological disorder with no known cause or cure. Unfortunately many people will suffer from migraine for years throughout their life negatively impacting upon their work, family and social lives. It is not really known what

causes migraine, there is no diagnostic test or cure. However, we do know it starts deep in the brain with misfiring of neurotransmitters which set in place a chain reaction. This results in many symptoms which affect hearing, eyesight and ability to smell, and usually ends with a throbbing one-sided headache. Exactly what triggers a migraine is very individual to each person. For most people it is rarely just one trigger but a combination of factors which individually can be tolerated but when several occur together or accumulate, a threshold is passed and an attack is triggered. For more information and advice on migraine treatments and prevention visit www.migraine.org.uk www.migrainetrust.org

items are usually made with potatoes, rice; more white, simple carbs, and a lot of fillers. So if you want to go gluten-free, and cut out grains for a quick jump start to your diet, then that’s a different story than just saying you’re glutenfree. Because today you can get a gluten-free muffin or bagel, so it’s not always calorically beneficial to go gluten-free. It’s also usually void of nutrients because it’s still processed food. If you want to go gluten-free, stick to quinoa and brown rice and beans and root vegetables.

Don’t Forget Strength Training Many people, women in particular, neglect resistance exercise. Women tend to stick to aerobic machines or group exercise classes. Weight training is crucial for women in order to prevent muscle and bone loss that occurs with age. More muscle mass also helps women to better manage their weight, maintain joint flexibility, and improve endurance.

Unplug Constantly checking email and refreshing our news feeds on a nonstop basis is technology overload. We are now tuned into our electronics 24/7, and it’s making us more stressed than ever. More and more research is linking this overload to increased risk for depression, burnout, and social anxiety. Aim to spend at least an hour or two during the day without your mobile phone, iPad or computer.” Being sedentary on our phones or laptops is also a recipe for weight gain and heart disease.

British Food Fortnight

September 23 – October 8 2017

Organic September

H

eld in the autumn at the same time as harvest festival, British Food Fortnight is the biggest annual, national celebration of British food and drink. It was established in the wake of the Foot and Mouth crisis, in response to the fact that, though there are numerous food initiatives, projects and events taking place across Britain, there was no overall flagship event to bring them to the public’s attention. Since its beginnings in 2002, British Food Fortnight has become THE opportunity for those who work in any aspect of food and drink, to come together and promote the benefits of buying and

22 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

eating from our home produced British larder. In setting a particular date range, it concentrate efforts across sectors. Every year businesses and organisations across the UK take part, all enjoying the commercial benefits that participation brings. The event is the biggest showcase of food on the national calendar with celebrations including promotions, tastings and special menus in pubs, restaurants and shops, special events in care homes for the elderly, scrumptious servings of British food in garden centre cafes, patriotic menus in hospitals, family feasts in children’s centres and lots of fun food and drink festivals and country fairs. To find out what is happening locally visit www.lovebritishfood.co.uk

This year the Soil Association needs you to join their “Organic your September” campaign. And again this year we have a whole month to celebrate all things organic. The message is to promote organic and encourage shoppers to discover their own favourite organic products – and there are lots to choose from. So, swap your usual supermarket foods for organic products. Be kinder to yourself, your wildlife, and create an overall healthier planet. So … how can you take part in Organic September? Well, there are lots of ways! Why not make a pact to replace just one of your everyday products each month with an organic one instead. You could replace food items, beauty products, clothing or household goods and before you know it you could be completely organic! The Soil Association has lots of helpful ideas about how you can shop for less and if you join The Soil Association you can get access to exclusive offers via Organic Connect a directory of independent retailers and suppliers. You could even have an organic box, filled with fresh fruit and veg, delivered straight to your door. Have you ever thought about having an organic holiday. By visiting The Soil Association website you can find a beautiful place to stay for a fabulous holiday – you could choose from a working organic farms, where you could find out more about organic farming, an organic campsite, yurt or cottage – something for everyone! For more information about activities and how you can get involved, go to Organic September at www. soilassociation.org for the details. Also the Fairtrade Foundation’s website at www.fairtrade.org.uk is full of useful information on why it’s so important to be eco-friendly. Go on, give it a go!

Underfloor Heating Underfloor Heating Underfloor heating is a great way to keep your home warm. It’s lovely to walk on, it distributes heat evenly around each corner of the room, and it frees your walls from radiators, making more space for paintings, shelf units or even picture windows. However, it can also be very expensive to install, particularly in older houses, so you may need to think long and hard before making a decision. What are the good things about underfloor heating systems? • Comfort! Your feet will be lovely and warm, so you can walk around barefoot all year - it’s particularly welcoming in the bathroom when you step out of the bath or shower • It distributes heat evenly and consistently around each room • A suitably sized unit can heat a larger area than an individual radiator, and works at a lower temperature, so it could reduce your

heating bills • Less wastage – your floors will stay warm even if the windows are open or the room is very draughty • It’s hidden – so it doesn’t spoil your décor or take up space with ugly, bulky radiators • It can be installed below stone, tile, wood or carpeted floors (as long as the carpet isn’t too thick - a 1.5 tog is generally considered the maximum suitable thickness) • It might enhance your home’s selling price: underfloor heating has a reputation for being state of the art and high spec and could attract buyers looking for a luxurious property So what’s not so good about it? • The main problem is the cost of underfloor heating: it can be expensive and difficult to install – so even if your bills are lower, you’re unlikely to recoup your initial outlay. In older buildings creating the right conditions under the floor can take time and cause major upheaval • It can take a long time to warm up, so it’s vital to use a timer to make sure rooms are warm enough when you want to use them • You can’t use it under some items of furniture or fittings, which might restrict the way you arrange your furniture; in fact, if you want to install underfloor heating throughout your home, you might have to get rid of some large, heavy items altogether

Separating an Open Living and Dining Space Combined living-dining rooms first became popular in the first half of the 20th century – open-plan design layouts replaced the stuffy and formal mazes of reception rooms found in traditional Victorian houses. So while they are a fairly contemporary idea, they can also feel like a bit of a dated concept already: modern 21st century living, particularly in small-yet-stylish flats, often sees the kitchen incorporated into the living area without the need for a dining table, with a raised kitchen island and sofas around a coffee table providing an open, social space for cooking and eating. While the kitchen may be the heart of any home, a big openplan living-dining room can be the warm social centre: perfect for eating, relaxing, entertaining, and working, with space for the whole family and plenty of friends. However, both halves are still separate spaces, and it can unfortunately be all too easy to let them blend into one and lose their definition just because they happen to be in the same room. There are plenty of ways to decorate a living-dining room so it feels a little more like two distinct places, with a space for mealtimes and a space for relaxing, or a more secluded spot to work at the table while the kids watch TV and the most clear divide is the flooring you choose.

• If you use a smaller system, you may find you have a lovely warm floor but the rest of the room is still chilly, so you need radiators anyway Can I install it myself? Before you invest in any underfloor heating equipment you should consult a specialist to help you decide which system is right for your home. They will also explain the difficulties and costs involved if you want to install it yourself. It’s possible to carry out electric underfloor heating installation yourself if you’re confident with DIY techniques. However, if you choose a water-based system you will need a qualified professional to lay the pipes and connect them to your boiler. They will also need to lay insulation and screed. Whichever system you choose, it should be linked to the electricity supply by a qualified electrician, who will also need to connect a sensor that works the thermostat.

might struggle to make them feel like different spaces. A great way to provide some contrast is to start with a base of a warm laminate floor style, and then use rugs to separate the two different areas. Arrange sofas and chairs around a large square rug in the living area, and use a similar styled rectangular rug – with a noticeably different pattern – under the dining table. If you don’t want to lose the soft carpets in your cosy living space, then consider separating the dining area with laminate flooring or tiles. The two different flooring styles side by side will create a noticeable contrast, with the added bonus that food spillages during dinner can be easily cleaned up.

Flawless flooring If there’s one thing that really ties a room together, it’s the floor-coverings – be they rugs, carpets, laminates or tiles. If a living-dining room has consistent flooring throughout, you www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 25

VW Passat GTE PROS ‘N’ CONS ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠

FAST FACTS

T

he GTE badge was first ushered in with the VW Golf and it eventually made its way to the more conservative Passat. Bolting a plug-in petrol-electric propulsion unit to a model that is best known for its diesel pulling power was perhaps a brave move for Volkswagen. But it seems to have paid off with the Passat. Like the Golf, the VW Passat GTE’s looks are characterised by C-shaped LED lights accommodated in its bumper, and the blue bar that stretches across the headlights and grille. It’s a restrained fine-tuning of the Passat’s tailoring, although, given the intense hue of blue, the use of which even expands to the car’s brake callipers, the GTE model is simple enough to distinguish from diesel Passats. The battery capacity and output have been given a bit of a boost, but the petrolelectric set-up is fundamentally the same as in the VW Golf GTE’s. The 156PS 1.4 TSI petrol unit and 115PS electric motor combine to make 218PS, giving a 0-62mph sprint of 7.4 seconds. Top speed is 140mph, but unless you’re on a German autobahn, you’re unlikely to risk finding out what that feels like. Step into the cabin and the Passat GTE houses a few understated touches, such as blue piping, blue stitching, aluminium trim and GTE emblems. Other than that, the switchgear and seats are the same as in any other Passat. And, as with all Passat saloons, space is generous. Even with the car’s lithium ion drive battery beneath the rear seats, the VW has good room and a boot that is big 26 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

enough for a family’s needs. The Volkswagen’s electric charging time is easy to cope with. Plugging the car’s seven-pin charge cable into a 16A wall socket, I got the 9.9kWh battery from a quarter charged to 100 per cent in under two hours. The GTE runs well on electriconly juice, with a possible range of 31 miles on zero emissions. In Hybrid form the VW saloon responds admirably, even when the petrol engine has closed, which it’ll do at moderate motorway speeds. The power unit restarts effortlessly when it needs to, while the car’s cruise control allows it to store its own impetus and cruise economically. The Passat GTE’s handling is as good as its performance. You can thrust the

Max speed: 140 mphh 0-62 mph: 7.4 secss Combined mpg: 156.9 Engine layout: 1395cc petrol + electric ➠ Max. power (PS): 218 ➠ CO2: 40 g/km ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠

Price: £37,025 saloon through bends and its tyres will dig into the tarmac strongly. There’s very little body roll, and the steering, while not delivering that much feedback, is precise. Here’s the important bit, though. VW claims the Passat GTE will do 156.9mpg on the combined cycle. But, as with all cars, this model’s economy will depend on what your driving is like. On a 60-mile run, beginning with a fully charged battery and driving on a mix of roads, I achieved 80.1mpg. Volkswagen’s Passat GTE is, without doubt, a talented car and an attractive vehicle in a wider sense than a conventional high-performing, fully loaded volume-marque. By blending large car pragmatism with a sophisticated plug-in hybrid system, VW has produced one of the greatest reasons yet to think about swapping from a standard oil-burning business saloon to an electrically powered one.
