Welcome to the October issue

I

t has been a challenging few weeks transitioning from a family of 3 to 4, juggling the needs of a newborn and a toddler has been a whole new experience but a journey we are enjoying. We have had our first family holiday in Norfolk, we were very lucky with the weather and had some lovely days out exploring our neighbouring county. In this issue we are looking at all things chocolate (my favourite topic!) as it is National Chocolate Month. If over the summer you have got engaged or are going to be involved in a wedding, our wedding feature is focussing on the show stopper...the cake, what is the history and what are the new trends. As winter is now well and truly upon us, we are looking at keeping warm this winter. What are you entitled to, top tips to save money and be more energy efficient. Finally, this month Tim takes the Volvo V90R for a spin! All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue!

News Comic Relief and UK Community Foundations launches a new £2million initiative investing in small community organisations across the UK Comic Relief and UK Community Foundations announced a new £2 million investment into supporting small community led organisations across the UK, which will play a vital role supporting people to make positive changes in their lives and their local communities. Grassroots organisations like these have been hit particularly hard over the last few years due to the current economic climate, which has made it harder to secure funding and yet these organisations are often the first and sometimes only point of support for individuals and communities trying to make a difference in their lives. The Core Strength – Local Communities initiative provides funding for essential core running costs for small locally led community organisations. Grants between £1,000 to £5,000 for up to 12 months are available to local community organisations with an annual income of up to £100,000. The initiative will sit under the Comic Relief programme of Building Stronger Communities – supporting groups who work to make their communities more connected, empowered and productive. Gilly Green, head of UK grants said, “We at Comic Relief recognise the importance of these community led organisations and their critical work. We also know that sometimes even the basics of keeping the

lights on can be a struggle at the moment, let alone time to plan and invest in growth. At the heart of this funding is to give organisations the choice of where their needs lie – be it paying for the rent and lighting or invest in development and forward planning. We are proud to lead this approach and invest into the heart of our local communities”. Fabian French, CEO UK Community Foundations said, “At UK Community Foundations we know that one of the key challenges faced by local organisations is getting funding for their core running costs, which is especially difficult when public sector grants are running dry. We’re delighted to continue our strong partnership with Comic Relief to help small and local charities concentrate on what they do best – helping those in need”. Closing dates for receipt of applications are on 1 November 2017 and 1 March 2018.

Boston set to be Illuminated Preparations for this year’s Illuminate Parade are gathering apace, ahead of the big event on the evening of Thursday 23 November 2017 in Boston Market Place. Illuminate is an annual light festival which celebrates the story of the Pilgrims, which will lead up to the international celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower in 2020. This year, five different schools from across Boston will be creating spectacular new lanterns for the parade, to follow the stunning ships, stars and birds of previous years. There will also be open making sessions at the Geoff Moulder Leisure Centre activity room on Sunday 15 October and then Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October, 10am and 3pm. Anyone can come as long as they are free to attend the Illuminate procession itself. Places on these workshops need to be booked, so to book yours, email Transported@litc.org.uk. There are still opportunities for musicians to play in

the procession as well, preferably wind or brass instruments – please email Anna.Scott@litc.org.uk to express an interest. As well as the Illuminate Parade, Thursday 23 November will see the Boston Christmas Market return. Festive treats and gifts can be purchased whilst watching the evening entertainment which will host Cinderella and Kenny J performances. The newly formed community group, Christmas In Boston, will turn on the Christmas lights they have worked hard to secure funding for from local businesses to light the town. A Festive Market has also being added to this year’s calendar on Sunday 17th December hosting a free screening of Elf in the Stump in the afternoon. Illuminate is a partnership event organised by Transported, Boston Borough Council and Mayflower 400. For more information, visit www.transportedart.com and www. mayflower400uk.org.

News Outdoor cinema coming back next summer

Plans are already being made for a repeat next summer of the outdoor cinema experiences enjoyed by so many in Boston’s Central Park. And Boston Borough Council’s events team wants to hear suggestions from you of suitable films to show. They must be U-rated so they are suitable for a family audience. The first open-air shows were blessed with fine weather and the audience enjoyed Mary Poppins and Despicable Me on two separate evenings. Early arrivals saw the mobile screen and projector equipment being set up which delivered such highquality images. A short film made by the council, showing Boston off at its best, filled in before the main features, which were sponsored by Chattertons Solicitors and Wealth Management in Boston. A real life Mary Poppins popped in for the showing of “her” film, followed by a Minion when Despicable Me was screened. Some who attended took to social media to post “We watched last night, it was well worth the wait” and “We had a

brilliant time tonight. Great job.” Kristina Willoughby, the town centre services manager, said: “We held our breath and crossed our fingers and were really lucky to get good weather for both nights. It was the first time this had been done, and the audiences and enjoyment the people had, means we will be back next summer.” If you have a suggestion for a family film with a U-certificate that you think should be shown please email Kristina at events@ boston.gov.uk Boston Women’s Aid had a worthwhile day at the market and have thanked the council events team for organising their charity stall. Marie Chapman, funding and development manager for Boston Women’s Aid, said “We had a wonderful day, many people came along to chat and try their luck on our tombola. We raised £175 for the charity.

Become a volunteer mentor and make a difference A Lincolnshire woman who is helping others to enjoy the benefits of volunteering whilst doing it herself is urging others to get involved too. Volunteering can aid self esteem, well being, increase your social circle and be a useful stepping stone to a future goal such as employment or improved mental health. Retired Jaye Adams (64), a former CCTV operator and courts security officer, of Cherry Holt Lane, Pinchbeck, supports Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) as a volunteer mentor, providing support on a one-toone basis to help others take the first steps into volunteering. LCVS is seeking to recruit others to similar roles in Boston, East Lindsey, South Holland and South Kesteven. Jaye said: “I just wanted to make a difference and try and help someone. “I’d recommend volunteering 100 per cent. It’s a big challenge but each time you get over a hurdle it’s more satisfying. “This role has given me an insight into how to support people with mental health issues. “It’s a nice feeling knowing you’ve made a difference to someone and you’ve made their day a little bit better. It makes me feel so good to see a smile on my mentee’s face.” LCVS – the charity that runs Volunteer Centres in Spalding, Boston, Louth and Grantham – currently has capacity to recruit further volunteer mentors and champions. Volunteering Champions, attend events, meeting people and promoting the benefits of volunteering. Ruth Copleston, LCVS senior operations officer, said: “Volunteering is well proven to offer a wide variety of health and well being benefits and can increase job prospects too. “We’re looking to recruit people who want to access all those benefits themselves and tell others about them. “These are roles for people who really want to make a difference to individuals and their local communities.” No experience is necessary and training will be provided. These roles provide great work experience and any time you can give will be welcomed. LCVS keeps a database of available voluntary roles to suit all interests, ranging from administration to animal welfare. If you’re interested in volunteering in any capacity contact LCVS via enquiry@lincolnshirecvs.org.uk or call 01205 510888 and select your local office from the options offered. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 5 www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 5

oston Borough Council probably has more communication with residents about issues involving rubbish than anything else. We know that concern over these matters is common among most local authorities and it is encouraging that so many residents are bothered about keeping the streets and public areas clean and tidy. The borough council has the responsibility for doing all it can to collect and dispose of rubbish in ways which are kindest to the environment. But it cannot do this without the assistance of the public. The guidelines are straight forward, but here are a few reminders made necessary by some recent incidents: • Please do not place any items into your blue recycling bin which cannot be recycled. Doing so is more than just a minor inconvenience. Our refuse collectors work to a tight schedule and simply do not have time to check each bin. If a contaminated bin is tipped into the lorry the WHOLE LOAD is contaminated, and that’s a dreadful waste of finite materials which can be used again. Check what can go into your blue bin here http://bit.ly/2rQdtfB • Please do not place items inside bags in your blue recycling bin. If you use a bin liner in your home please ensure that the material is tipped loose, out of the bags, into your wheelie bin. Bin liners cannot be recycled and can hide items which cannot be recycled and may pose a hazard to our staff. Recently a bag was found to contain used hypodermic needles. Advice

What our local Citizens Advice trustees do by Sally Pygott – Project Development Team Leader

B

eing a charity trustee can be rewarding and enjoyable. It is a great way to be involved in a community or cause which matters to you. Trustees come from all walks of life and being a trustee can help you meet new people, change your community for the better, learn new skills or use your existing skills in a new context. You may get involved because it is a cause or an issue you are passionate about or maybe your life has been touched by the work of the voluntary organisation. You may want to build your CV, gain experience of strategy and management or find out more about the not-for-profit sector before making a career change. Across England and Wales there are over 300 local Citizens Advice. Each one is a registered charity and, by law, has to have its own board of trustees who are responsible for leading the organisation and deciding how it is run.

What does a local Citizens Advice trustee do? Trustees are volunteers who are expected to use their skills, knowledge and experience to help guide and govern their local Citizens

Advice. They work with the Chief Executive and other staff to shape strategy and give direction. This includes making sure that their local Citizens Advice is: • Doing what it was set-up to do, such as offering high quality advice services to the local community. • Complying with the law, including upkeep of premises, insurance, recruitment and equipment. • Securing money to meet current and new demands, and that all funds are used responsibly. • Recognised and valued by local organisations, funders and people, who are aware of the vital service their local Citizens Advice provides. Within a board, some trustees will have a specific role, such as being the Chair, Treasurer or Secretary. These positions have defined responsibilities, such as chairing and facilitating meetings (Chair), overseeing the budget (Treasurer) and taking and circulating minutes (Secretary). Attendance at regular meetings is expected by all trustees. Sometimes trustees will get involved in additional governance projects, such as supporting fundraising, developing strategy or overseeing HR procedures.

Jenny Paterson, a Trustee for Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire, tells us how being a trustee has given her the opportunity to use her unique skills and experience while learning from others too. How much time is involved in volunteering as a trustee? In 2015/16, the 2500 local Citizens Advice trustees said that they spent an average of just over 8.5 hours every month undertaking trustee business., including four compulsory annual meetings. Most trustee boards meet in the evenings to allow people to fit around full-time employment or studying. However, outside of meetings, trustees may be required to give additional support, such as working with members of staff on key projects (such as budgeting, recruitment or communications).

What qualifications are required to be a trustee? No specific qualifications are required to be a trustee. Local Citizens Advice trustee boards welcome people of all ages, backgrounds and experience who are passionate about advice services and can bring innovative ideas, unique perspectives and good judgement. Sometimes, a local Citizens Advice will be looking for a trustee with a specific skillset, such as experience in law, advice services or fundraising. If so, this should be outlined in the role profile and description.

What’s in it for you? • Expenses - all trustees are volunteers,

which means they aren’t paid. However, we do pay out of pocket expenses, such as travel to-and-from meetings. • Training - all trustees are given training so that you know what is expected of you and how to carry out your role. • Experience - being a trustee is a good experience to put on your CV. It shows that you can hold a position of responsibility, work with others and help to lead and guide an organisation. • Networking opportunities - in total there is a network of over 300 local Citizens Advice across England and Wales, and 2500 trustees. There are a number of national events and training opportunities available for trustees to attend. • Satisfaction - as a trustee, you would be helping to deliver a vital local service that, along with other local Citizens Advice, helps millions of people every year to find a way forward. At its heart, being a trustee puts you at the centre of the action for the organisation you are involved in. The more effective the board of trustees, the greater difference you and your organisation will make.”

Boston College New principal Jo Maher joined all the staff in welcoming everyone to the new academic year. New students to Boston College have settled in well and spent their first week enjoying a variety of activities as part of their induction week. As well as getting to know their way around campus and familiarising themselves with the new facilities, learners took advantage of team building trips to make new friends and get to know their courses a little bit better. Students on the Uniformed Public Services course began with the first of what will be many of their outdoor adventures at Tallington Lakes, putting their skills to the test in canoes and kayaks. Closer to home, students starting their Sports courses took part in an overnight camp out at the Peter Paine Performance Centre. Elsewhere on campus students could be found in the workshops

learning about health and safety and the industry standard tools they are about to start working with. Returning students have also settled quickly and are thinking about their next steps with UCAS Applications being filled in for University and work placements being arranged. Students on Health and Social Care courses are looking forward to starting their placements in hospitals, nursing homes and residential care settings. The College is also working closely with local schools and will be offering students the opportunity to tour the campus and speak to staff about subjects that interest them at their forthcoming Open Event.

Butterwick Primary School Butterwick Primary School recently raised an outstanding amount of money by participating in a fundraising event organised by Usborne Books at Home. Over a 1 week period in May half term the children in Years Reception to Year 6 at Butterwick Primary read as many books as possible and the children in Reception listened to as many books as possible, being sponsored by their friends and families. Usborne Organiser Sarah Singleton worked closely with Deputy Headteacher Karen Lewis to launch the event, setting the children a challenge to read with as many different people as possible during the week long sponsored event. The children were very enthusiastic and raised an impressive £525 which Sarah was able to add an additional £315 of Usborne Books to their total. Sarah Singleton - Usborne Books at Home Organiser - said: “Working with local schools to help raise money to get brand new books is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. Mrs Lewis and the children at Butterwick Primary School did an incredible job and I’m so pleased to have been able to support them in expanding their school resources.” Usborne Books at Home aim to encourage a love of books with as many children as possible and a way of doing this is by rewarding schools who raise large sums of money, with additional free books. The school received their books for the start of the new school 10 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Boston Library Events in October

Mrs Hudson and the Spirit’s Curse by Martin Davies ‘A group of Limehouse merchants are mysteriously dying off one by one. What if the best detectives for the job aren’t Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, but Holmes’ housekeeper Mrs Hudson and her assistant Flottie? I really enjoyed this entertaining story. It made a refreshing change to see Mrs Hudson and Flottie keeping one step ahead of Holmes and Watson throughout and I’m sure die hard Sherlock fans won’t be too upset to have their hero outwitted by his intrepid housekeeper.

Mr Pusskins by Sam Lloyd Mr Pusskins seems to have everything a cat could want; someone to play with, someone to brush his fur and someone to give him cuddles. Unfortunately Mr Pusskins doesn’t appreciate what he’s got and decides to leave home and seek adventure. Things don’t turn out quite the way he planned and he soon regrets his decision. With excellent illustrations and engaging text Mr Pusskins is a story that will delight readers young and old.

Gap years are traditionally the preserve of teenagers and students, but a Spalding couple is proving doesn’t have to be that way.

N

igel Chapman and Louise have given up their stable lifestyle in favour of a round the world trip with their seven-yearold son Kian. They have mapped out a route to parts of America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The family has enjoyed the summer in England and Wales, with Nigel and Louise doing voluntary work at six different field studies centres. The overseas part of their plan began on September 8, with the first leg to San Francisco. Nigel (46) said: “The plan is to travel until at least February, providing we manage to keep to our budget and nothing untoward crops up.

“It’s taken a lot of saving and a lot of planning but we’re thrilled to actually be on it now and seeing new places and enjoying fresh experiences every day makes the months of preparation worth every bit.” Prior to the trip, which began in mid-July, Nigel gave up his employment as a journalist. Louise (37), a freelance writer, will be doing some communications work remotely. Kian has been deregistered from Spalding Monkshouse Prmary School and is being educated by his parents on the road. Nigel and Louise believe the experiences and learning he will gather on the trip will prove valuable. Louise said: “A round the world trip is something we’d always hoped

we’d be able to do. We hadn’t thought it would be in our mid-life but decided now was an opportune time for all of us and have gone for it. “We could have waited until Nigel and I were retired but no one can foresee how their health or finances will be then. “We wanted to experience it with Kian while he’s old enough to appreciate it and young enough to want to do it with us!” The couple have rented out their home to provide some income and their voluntary marketing work with Real Family Holidays has enabled them to stay in and enjoy parts of the UK they had not previously seen. Real Family Holidays are affordable breaks run by the charity Field Studies Council, with the aim of getting families outside learning

together about the environment. The cost is kept low at £30 per person per night full board to try to reach as many as possible. The trips include a free daily activity such as orienteering, den building, survive in the wild skills or rock pooling, with expert guidance. They make use of field studies centres used for school residential visits during term time. “We love the outdoors and trying different activities so Real Family Holidays was a perfect fit for us,” said Louise. “Nigel and I both fondly remember residential courses from our schooldays so it’s been a chance to relive them and introduce them to Kian and we’ve all loved every minute. We can’t recommend these breaks highly enough.” Nigel recently won a prize of a

week’s campervan hire in the USA so that will be used between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Louise is looking forward to spending time with a best friend who emigrated to Perth, Australia, and Kian is thrilled by the prospect of seeing life in Japan. He’ll be in Tokyo for his eighth birthday. The Chapmans are hoping to spend Christmas Day on a beach in Australia, joined by Nigel’s daughter Tia who is flying out for a holiday during a break in her university studies. Nigel said: “We want this trip to provide us with memories to last a lifetime but we’re not naive enough to think it won’t provide us with some challenges and difficult times.

“And then we get back, we’ll be straight into finding a school place for Kian and employment for us. That may not prove easy, but we’ve said all long that we’ll tackle each hurdle as it arises and try and make the most of everything else in the meantime.”

Funerals

Choosing a Headstone It is important to know how to choose headstones for graves before you purchase a monument for your loved one. Depending on the type of material you choose the headstone may last hundreds of years, which is why it is so critical to make the correct choice.

H

eadstones for graves are known by many other names. Some people refer to headstones as tombstones, others say gravestones or grave markers, but all of these terms refer to the same thing. A headstone is used to mark a grave. It is placed over the location where the casket of the deceased has been buried, and it is usually made of stone. As a marker, it is used to let the living know who was buried on that spot. Oftentimes, the birth date and the date of death are also written on the tombstone. Most families or loved ones of the deceased also include a short message or prayer in honor of their departed loved ones. Unless people have had to buy a headstone personally, they probably do not know that there is actually more to a headstone than just a stone marker. The following are important points to consider when choosing headstones for graves

yourself. Visit the cemetery and see if there are limitations on the headstone size and material. 2. Make sure you know the fees Cemeteries will typically charge a fee for installation. However, not all cemeteries will offer installation services. The company that you purchase the monument from may do the install for you, or can recommend someone who will complete the installation. It is also important to find out if the cemetery has maintenance fees. Many cemeteries will have ongoing fees that you should be aware of.

How To Choose Headstones For Graves

3. Choose the headstone material Although most headstones are typically made of stone, there are still different types of stone available. Granite, marble, limestone, sandstone, and slate are the most common types of stone used. Still, there are other materials used for the construction of headstones such as iron, wood and bronze.

1. Learn the cemetery restrictions Most cemeteries will have restrictions on what type of headstone you can use. The restrictions vary and some cemeteries can have size, material and design regulations. Your local monument companies should be familiar with the restrictions, but it is important that you speak to the cemetery

4. Choose the headstone shape There are a number of different types of headstones for graves and each one of these have their own appeal. The most common way to differentiate headstones is through the way of their orientation. One of the most used headstones for graves are those that lay flat on the ground, simply

18 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

referred to as flat headstones. Also known as ground-level headstones, these markers are just a couple of inches off the ground. There are some cases however, when this type of tombstone is raised more than a few inches off the ground and are thus called raised-top flat headstones. Other headstones stand tall from the ground, and are called upright headstones. This is also one of the most commonly chosen types of headstones because they are easier to see than the flat types. The choice of which headstone to use is dependent not only on the orientation of the markers and the material of the tombstone, but also on other important aspects such as the design and the form of the tombstone. Most forms and designs are used to symbolize certain values or meanings. A dove symbolises purity and love, while a lamb is a sign of innocence. Weddings

Let’s Eat Cake! Why do we have a cake at a Wedding?

A

wedding cake is the traditional cake served at wedding receptions following dinner. In some parts of England, the wedding cake is served at a wedding breakfast, note that ‘wedding breakfast’ does not mean the meal will be held in the morning but at a time following the ceremony on the same day. In modern Western culture, the cake is usually on display and served to guests at the reception. Traditionally, wedding cakes were made to bring good luck to all guests and the couple. Modernly however, they are more of a centerpiece to the wedding and are not always even served to the guests. Some cakes are built with only a single edible tier for the bride and groom to share, but this is rare since the cost difference between fake and real tiers is minimal. Wedding cakes come in a variety of sizes, depending on the number of guests the cake will serve. Modern pastry chefs and cake designers use various ingredients and tools to create a cake that usually reflects the personalities of the couple.

The History of The Wedding Cake The contemporary wedding cake has

grown out of several different ethnic traditions. One of the first traditions began in Ancient Rome where bread was broken over the bride’s head to bring good fortune to the couple. Wedding cake was originally a luxury item, and a sign of celebration and social status. The bigger the cake, the higher the social standing. Wedding cakes in England and early America were traditionally fruit cakes, often topped with marzipan and icing with tiers, Cutting the cake was an important part of the reception. White icing was also a symbol of money and social importance in Victorian times, so a white cake was highly desired. Today, many flavours and configurations are available in addition to the traditional all-white tiered cake. In details, the custom was for the groom to break the cake over the bride’s head to symbolise the end of the bride’s virginal state, ensure fertility, and the beginning of her husband’s power over her. Cakes were not yet invented at that time, so they mostly used a loaf of freshly baked of barley bread to do the tradition. The guests who also attended the wedding would take part by taking a piece of the broken wedding cake in hopes that they would also get good luck and fortune. The custom of breaking the cake was mostly necessary at that time since they believed it would benefit and provide good fortune to the couple’s future children. This ritual was mostly necessary for couples because this also affected the future of their children since only those children whose parents participated in the ritual were considered for a Roman high office. Brides mostly had to participate to ensure that her children would have good fortune In Medieval England cakes were stacked as high as possible for the bride and groom to kiss over. A successful kiss meant they were guaranteed a prosperous life together. From this the Croquembouche was created. The myth behind this cake tells of a Pastry chef, visiting Medieval England who witnessed their tradition of piling sweet rolls between the bride

and groom, which they attempted to kiss over without knocking them all down. The pastry chef then went back to France and piled sweet rolls up into a tower to make the first Croquembouche. The modern croquembouche is still very popular in France, where it is now common to place the croquembouche tower on a bed of cake and make it a top tier. This traditional French wedding cake is built from Profiteroles and given a halo of spun sugar. In 1703, Thomas Rich, a baker’s apprentice from Ludgate Hill, fell in love with his employer’s daughter and asked her to marry him. He wanted to make an extravagant cake, so he drew on St Bride’s Church, on Fleet Street in London for inspiration.

Modern adaptations Wedding cake toppers are models or art pieces that sit atop the cake. The most common type of cake topper features a representation of a bride and groom in wedding attire. This custom was dominant in US weddings in the 1950s, where it represented togetherness. Wedding toppers today are often figures that indicate shared hobbies or other passions, if they are used at all. Some are humorous, or may represent the couple’s hobby or occupation. Some couples use a piece of art which will be displayed in their home later, some couples skip the topper altogether or decorate the top tier with flowers. The traditional wedding cake is made from a rich fruitcake whose ingredients last without degrading. This allowed the top tier to be stored after the wedding, to be eaten at the christening of the first child. Many modern cakes now consist of flavors such as vanilla sponge, chocolate sponge or even carrot cake! Most cakes are between three and five tiers in height. Royal wedding cakes are among the more elaborate cakes seen. Most recently in 2011, Prince William and his bride Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, had a wedding cake that was eight-tiers. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 21

October: My Idea of Food Heaven This could possibly be the most amazing week of the whole year, as between the 9th and 15th of October we are not only celebrating Chocolate Week, but National Curry week as well! Heaven! As well as paying homage to the amazing Curry (and chocolate of course), by eating as much of the stuff as is humanly possible the whole week long, I will also be putting together a few random facts on why we Brits love the good old curry so much. Enjoy!

k ee W e t a l Choco As a chocolate lover, this is the one I’ve all been waiting for, Chocolate Week! If you’re anything like me I’m sure you’ve already got lots planned to celebrate Chocolate Week in style, but just to show an extra bit of appreciation to the stuff, here’s a few interesting facts you might not know about chocolate.

Did you know..... 1: The earliest known curry was made in Mesopotamia in around 1700BC. 2: The origin of the word ‘curry’ comes from ‘kari’, the Tamil word for ‘spiced sauce’. 3: Chilli is the most popular spice in the world and can help combat heart attacks and strokes and extends blood coagulation times, preventing harmful blood clots. 4: Korma is a greatly misunderstood curry. Korma is “slow cooking or braising” rather than meaning a mild curry as it has become accepted in Britain. It can actually be very mild or fiery hot, with rich ingredients. 5: Over 70,000 staff are employed by the more than 9,000 Indian Curry Restaurants in the UK and, in fact, in London there is a greater number of Indian Restaurants than there are in 22 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Bombay and Delhi combined! 6: Two thirds of all meals out in the UK are Indian Food and this is worth 3.2 billion pounds a year! 7: Before it referred to food, ‘curry’ meant a way to prepare leather or the parts of an animal slain in a hunt that were given to the hounds. 8: A record tower of 1,280 poppadoms was piled up in Northampton to celebrate Curry Week in 2012. It was 5ft 8ins high. 9: The first recipe in English “To make a currey the India way” was in Hannah Glasse’s Art of Cookery published in 1747. 10: Japanese curry is one of the most popular dishes in Japan, where people eat it an average of 62 times a year. Curry was first introduced to Japan by the British in the 1870s.

How to keep the elderly warm in winter

S

evere cold snaps can have dramatic effects on everyday life, especially for the elderly. Cold and wintry conditions can cause severe illness and, in the worst cases, people can die. By taking some simple precautions, most people can be prepared for the cold weather • Get a free seasonal flu jab. Not only is seasonal flu unpleasant, but it can also cause serious illnesses, such as pneumonia or bronchitis and in the worst cases, it can result in a stay in hospital, or even death. The elderly and those with long-term health problems are most at risk. Your ageing parent can get a free jab from the age of 65. They should contact their GP, or talk to their pharmacist • Try to avoid catching colds or flu. Colds and flu spread very easily. Encourage your ageing parent to always cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when you coughing or sneezing and encourage visitors and relatives to do the same. They should throw away used tissues as soon as possible and wash their hands regularly with soap and water, taking a hand sanitiser gel when they are out and about • Stock up on over-the-counter cough and cold remedies, so they have them to hand if they suddenly feel ill Heating your home effectively and safely. Some of these energy-saving tips may seem obvious, but they can make a big difference when it comes to reducing fuel bills By setting the heating to the right temperature, you can keep your home warm and lower your bills. The main living room

should be around 21°C (70°F), the bedroom should be 18°C (65°F) and the rest of the house at least 16°C (61°F). Set the heating to come on just before you get up and switch off after you’ve gone to bed. If it’s very cold, set the heating to come on earlier and turn off later rather than turning the thermostat up. If you can’t heat all the rooms, heat the living room throughout the day and the bedroom just before you go to bed. Remember to close curtains and shut doors to keep heat in the rooms you use most. Get the heating system checked regularly, and keep the home well ventilated. If you have open fires, make sure they are properly ventilated. Use safety guards and don’t hang washing near open flames. If you use a fire or heater in your bedroom at night, always keep a window and the door open Use electric blankets as instructed and get it tested every three years. Switch appliances (such as TVs and microwaves) off, rather than leaving them on standby. Do not use a gas cooker or oven to heat the home – it is inefficient and there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Keeping the heat in Insulating your home not only helps to keep you warm and healthy, but it will also help to keep heating costs down • Fit draught proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors • Make sure that the loft has at least 10–11 inches(270mm) of insulation

• Insulate wall cavities and hot water cylinder and pipes • Draw curtains at dusk to help keep the heat generated inside the rooms • Make sure that radiators are not obstructed by curtains or furniture Financial help to heat your home Winter Fuel Payment. This is a tax-free benefit to help pay for heating during winter. You could get between £100 and £300 tax-free to help pay your heating bills if you were born on or before 5 August 1953. This is known as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’. Most payments are made automatically between November and December. You should get your money by 31 December. Visit www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment Warm Home Discount Scheme You could get £140 off your electricity bill for winter 2017 to 2018 under the Warm Home Discount Scheme. The money isn’t paid to you - it’s a one-off discount on your electricity bill, between October and March. To find out if you are eligible visit www. gov.uk/the-warm-home-discount-scheme Cold Weather Payment You may get a Cold Weather Payment if you’re getting certain benefits. You’ll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below for 7 consecutive days. You’ll get a payment of £25 for each 7 day period of very cold weather between 1 November and 31 March. For more information visit www.gov.uk/ cold-weather-payment Energy Company Obligation The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a government energy efficiency scheme in Great Britain to help reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty. Volvo V90 R-Design PROS ‘N’ CONS à Looks à Kit à Economy à Room à Hard Ride

V

olvo estates have come a long way since their ‘wardrobe on wheels’ image. We all knew they were safe and comfortable; they just weren’t sexy. That all changed some years ago, and the last V70 looked great; perhaps even better than its saloon sibling, the S80. Then in 2016, the V90 and the booted S90 came along; two stunning cars with more than a hint of sporting appeal woven into the luxury, ride comfort and space that Volvos always offer The models have been a success in the short time they’ve been out – but the V90 is the one that most people favour. As an estate car, it’s more practical, even though the Swedish car maker has made the load area slightly smaller than the previous V70’s. For those who like versatility and don’t want the ‘conservative’ estate car image, Volvo has recently put its R-Design stamp on the V90. This means you can still drive an estate car, but one that looks hunkered down and stimulating. Yes, stimulating – who’d have thought a Volvo could have that effect? The R-Design flavour has always given Volvos that extra something – it’s made the cars spicier to look at and hotter in the way they handle. The V90 R-Design is a genuine looker – a great piece of artwork all round. Its kerbside appeal is boosted even further, thanks to its 15mm lowered ride height, silver door mirrors, gloss black grille and flashy 18inch alloy wheels. The jazziness continues inside, with semielectrically operated leather and nubuck sports seats. There are also metal-effect inlays, a vivid LED driver’s display, sports pedals, and illuminated tread plates. My test car was fitted with the D4 engine, hooked up to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The D4 is a 2.0-litre 26 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

FAST FACTS (1.5 182PS i-VTEC Turbo Sport manual – as tested) turbo diesel unit delivering 190PS - a welljudged output for regular commuting. It’s quick enough for most palates, reaching 62mph in 8.5 seconds, but it is prudent, too. If you see over 60mpg from this engine, I wouldn’t be taken aback. The V90 is refreshing compared with its rear-wheel drive German equals. It’s driven by its front wheels, and is nimbler to wield. The Volvo feels sprightlier, thanks to the weight of the pedals and steering - and while this is no small vehicle, it feels far from overwhelming, due to how acquiescent it is. Because of the R-Design’s lowered, firmer suspension setup, the V90 R-Design will corner quickly without perceptible body lean. However, the drawback is that there’s no option to alter the suspension on the fly. Mind you, air suspension can be substituted when you buy the car new, although it will cost you £1,500 for the privilege. On the regular non-R-Design V90s you’re offered a more cushioned ride. But if you’re determined to go for a sporty estate, and don’t mind a lower, firmer system, then the stock V90 R-Design is an excellent choice. from the Japanese firm, and brings it right

into serious competition with hardcore rivals like Ford’s Focus and VW’s Golf. The way the tenth-generation Civic looks, feels, and goes means the opposition should be worried.
