Welcome to the March issue At home we have been busy making plans for the rest of the year, filling up the diary with days out, mini breaks and meet ups with friends and family. I always find time goes so quickly when you’re juggling running a home, children and work so if I don’t put something concrete in, it never happens! I cannot believe that this year my little boy will be 3 and we’re already thinking about his party and presents. Where has that time gone? But let’s nit wish time away and back to March, this month we are looking at all the romance with our wedding feature looking at the pitfalls of DIYing. In our family life section we are talking all things childcare, when you’re working you need to find reliable, quality childcare that your child(ren) and you are happy with – it can be a difficult decision to make on what is the best option for your family. Don’t forget mum this month! It’s Mother’s Day on March 11th, check out our guide on page 23. This month Tim is test driving the A4 Avant, Annette from the Village Midwives talks about celebrating Mother’s Day and we visit Kirton to see what it has to offer local residents. As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and have a great month!

News Boston marathon: World’s flattest and possibly the fastest

Boston Marathon has seen off a challenge from organisers of the Manchester Marathon to lay claim to running the flattest marathon in the world. Manchester Marathon organisers were proud to say their course only reaches a maximum elevation of 90ft. Pah! said the organisers of the Boston Marathon, ours only reaches a giddy height of 11.2 feet! Boston Marathon, THE flattest marathon in the world, taking place on Sunday, April 15, is popular with runners who, with an absence of hills, record their personal best times. It’s also the lowest marathon in the world – at sea level – with lots of good, clean air for deep-

breathing athletes. Organising committee chairman Richard Austin said: “It could also be the fastest marathon in the world. There is every possibility that the right runner could record a world record time here. This year’s event will take place the day before the Boston Marathon in the daughter city in America. It is anticipated that the entry will break through the 1,000 barrier. As well as the full marathon there will also be a half marathon and a fun run. The event is a great charity fundraiser. It will start in Boston Market Place at 9am and the finish line will be at Boston College.

soundLINCS Shortlisted for National Workplace Initiative Award Lincolnshire based community music organisation soundLINCS are delighted to have been shortlisted alongside four other organisations nationwide for the chance to win the Best FamilyFriendly Workplace Initiative as part of the Fantastic For Families Awards 2018. The Award, to be presented at a ceremony in Leeds on 1st March, recognises ‘fantastic organisations who have displayed innovative good practice in considering the caring

responsibilities and general needs of their staff.’ For soundLINCS, the nomination is in recognition of the decision to move to extended office hours from Monday to Thursday, fitting employees’ full-time working week into four days and providing a three day weekend in which they could meet their personal responsibilities, whilst also creating the systems to maintain the important delivery of the Company seven days a week.

Citizens Advice helps thousands of people with mental health problems in the East Midlands The number of people in the East Midlands with mental health problems who used Citizens Advice reached over 7,500 last year. On average, people reporting mental health problems in the East Midlands needed advice with 5.9 issues. A new survey from Citizens Advice has found mental health practitioners are spending more time on non-health related issues, such as debt or housing, during appointments compared to last year. 8 in 10 practitioners surveyed by the charity said they had less time to deliver clinical care after being asked to assist with tasks like writing up debt management plans and contacting public service bodies. A number of Citizens Advice run advice sessions in GP surgeries and hospitals to allow health professionals to focus on treatment, and help people tackle practical problems which can

cause or contribute to their poor mental health. Stuart Hellon, Chief Executive Officer of Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire, said: “Practical problems, like debt, can often be more difficult to manage if you also have mental health problems. “This new research shows it’s too often mental health professionals who are spending appointment time helping patients with wider problems. It is vital that people with mental health problems have access to appropriate practical support in their community. We would urge anyone who needs help to contact Citizens Advice on 03444 111 444, email us on outreach@ citizensadvicemidlincs.org.uk, look at www.citizensadvice.org. uk or visit our offices in Boston, Sleaford or North Hykeham (advice times available via the Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire website).”

Cadets’ coats for warm rail

Churchwarden Bob Tamberlin accepts a delivery of warm winter coats from Boston Police Cadets, pictured, from left, Section Leader Stephen Covell, Cadet Ryan Tittershill, Bob, Cadet Lauren Gamble and Cadet Holly King.

Temperatures are staying down and when it’s not chilly it’s wet. Some people do not have the funds to properly equip themselves or their families for what the winter weather may throw at them. So Boston Police Cadets have been running their own campaign to collect coats and warm winter clothing for “The Warm Rail” at Boston Stump. Anyone who needs something from the rail can help themselves. The cadets have just delivered their second load of coats and will carry on collecting. They are also collecting old ties. The cadets will be turning these into personal belongings envelopes as an alternative to the impersonal paper envelopes used to return or keep safe the personal belongings of people in hospital.

bypass for Boston – it’s been a dream for decades, but it’s now closer to becoming reality than at any time before. A £100 million flood protection scheme for Boston – that now IS reality. More new businesses, more new jobs, existing businesses expanding, exciting business news yet to come – all also reality. Boston’s new reality is that its future is looking decidedly rosy. It’s not come about by accident. Years of behind-thescenes conversations, debate and lobbying have had an impact. The barrier will be the biggest flood protection scheme outside of London, and that shows what notice is being paid to Boston at the highest levels. It is the single biggest public investment in Boston’s history. The Government minister who visited us to turn the first sod and officially declare the start of construction confirmed that Boston Barrier is a national priority. It is also the key to unlocking Boston’s potential and the minister said it was a vote of confidence in the area. Now another minister has made special mention of Boston. Transport Minister Chris Grayling has an expectation that there will be a campaign for Boston’s bypass to be an early project following announcement of additional Government cash for such schemes. Too right! After years of campaigning this is a huge step forward. We are working towards a viable plan to reduce the town’s very demonstrable traffic congestion

Each month a different member of Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet writes about the issues which they have responsibility for. This month Cllr Michael Cooper, Leader, Boston Borough Council talks about the future of the town and it’s development.

Michael’s Notes and we will continue to make the case for our fair share of any available funding. The finance is there and if we can get things ready to go I would hope to see something within the next five years. That confidence in Boston for a future which is already on the horizon is being reflected in an increasing appetite from those who want to do business here. We have been ahead of that curve for some time now, working hard to encourage economic development. Some of those conversations are commercially sensitive and have to remain confidential for now, but there will be some exciting announcements shortly. Already we have supported millions of pounds worth of development, creating hundreds of new jobs through our open-for-business policy and attracting inward investments. New inward investment is key to delivering the jobs growth and opportunities for our young people to live and work in the borough and we are working hard to support a £10 million pound investment from an Irish company, Annyalla Chicks, who have purchased and are currently bringing back into use the old Produce World site in Butterwick, creating more than 100 new jobs at all levels. Others include the new Lidl store, new Co-ops on London Road, Wyberton and at Swineshead, Screwfix store in Boston, Costa Coffee Drive Thru and KFC on the Quadrant development, refurbishment of the former Clarks Shoe shop to a coffeehouse increasing the leisure and recreational

offer in the town and ongoing conversations with developers to ensure the right type of business accommodation is built as seen recently with two applications to build business units on Endeavour Park and Sutterton. We have also seen, over this past year, growth and business expansion along Marsh Lane on the Riverside Industrial Estate and not forgetting the very impressive new Duckworth Jaguar Land Rover showroom and are pleased to welcome a new Hyundai dealership to Boston, reflecting our vibrant car dealership sector across the borough. Most of the leading car manufacturers are represented in the borough of Boston which reflects our economic buoyancy and growth potential. There has also been an extension to Sports Bike Direct and the Trade Windows facility coming out of the ground at Kirton. The good news for Boston just keeps on coming. The council put together the bid for this funding and is pleased that Government has recognised the efforts being made to do all possible to smooth the path for more housing in this area. It is for projects of marginal viability, so can be used for those housing projects already planned but which might otherwise have been slower in coming to fruition because of issues around funding for necessary infrastructure. With this not insubstantial amount of cash available, this will mean more much-needed homes, quicker. It’s not spin – these are real for the here and now, with even more to come.

Advice

Getting Your Finance in Hand “I recently lost my job and and fell behind on several bills including my council tax, electricity and credit cards. I’m back in work and keen to start paying off my debts, but can’t afford to pay them all straight away. What should I pay off first?” First off, draw up a list of who you owe money to, how much you owe, and which of these are ‘priority debts’. Priority debts include your rent or mortgage, gas and electric, and council tax. These debts should always be paid first as delaying payment can have serious consequences such as having your energy supply cut off, or losing your home. You can use any spare income to tackle your credit cards and personal loans. To work out exactly how much you can afford to repay, you’ll need to compare your monthly income to your essential outgoings and see how much money you’ve got leftover to put towards your debts. Citizens Advice has an online budget tool which can help. You’re now ready to start negotiations with your

creditor. Put together a letter otherwise know as a “financial statement” - explaining why your ability to repay has been affected, including a full breakdown of your monthly

income and outgoings and what you think you can pay. Send this letter to your creditors and they will use the information to help settle an affordable repayment plan

with you. For more guidance on putting together your budget and financial statement, go to www.citizensadvice.org.uk or visit your local Citizens Advice

Advice Worth Hearing!

Y

ou probably have regular check-ups at the dentist and the opticians, but when did you last have your hearing tested? It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about 10 million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually & can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation and has been linked to mental health issues. It can take between 10 & 15 years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision & teeth it is often taken for granted. People often try to compensate for this by asking people to repeat themselves, turning the T.V up etc. It is often a friend or family member that notice beforehand. Sound Advice Hearing can help you hear better again and in turn, help improve your quality of life.

If I think I have a problem, how can you help? We are a privately run local family business with full time hearing centres located in Peterborough, King’s Lynn & Horncastle. We also hold day clinics at Whittlesey and Kirton Medical Centre. We are proud to have some of the

“These days, digital hearing aids can be very discreet & almost undetectable - but they’re still powerful enough to help with even the severest of hearing losses.”

most sophisticated testing equipment available and offer FREE hearing tests, and if preferred, full diagnostic hearing assessments in a sound proof environment, or in the comfort of your own home. We provide independent and impartial advice and can provide a FREE hearing aid trial (with no obligation). We are able to create a personalised solution for all your hearing requirements based on lifestyle, cosmetics & importantly - budget. Our business model is based around good old fashioned values with free after- care which is second to none. What other Services do you offer? We also provide a comprehensive wax removal service through irrigation, micro suction & instrumentation. Wax removal is becoming more & more difficult to have administered through some GP surgeries and can sometimes involve frustrating & lengthy delays. We also offer advice on Tinnitus Management & provide custom solutions for noise and hearing protection. Are hearing aids big and clumsy? These days, digital hearing aids can be very discreet & almost undetectable - but they’re still powerful enough to help with even the severest of hearing losses. Most people are amazed at the size & performance of modern hearing aids. They help you hear every day sounds and make it much easier to follow conversations. Your confidence in talking to people should improve & everyday & social occasions will become less of a struggle. Some hearing aids also help reduce certain unwanted background noises & if you have tinnitus, you may find it disturbs you less when you wear a hearing aid. Some hearing aids can connect to telephones, mobile telephones, televisions, computers, IPads etc. For those that find hearing aids fiddly, there are now rechargeable solutions so batteries do not have to be changed.

It’s never too early to look after your hearing. Help yourself & those around you and book a free assessment with us now. It really can make a world of difference! What makes you different from the competition? We are a local family run business with many years of experience. We have access to all makes and models and can provide impartial advice accordingly. It’s our combination of an extensive range of products, experience, continuity, in depth testing, dedicated time and attention to detail that is a winner. If you spend time with someone to get their prescription and fitting correct, the quality of the final result will always be superior. We are a Hearing Care Company that is 100% dedicated and focused on hearing alone.

How can I tell if I have a hearing problem? Typical indicators include asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to hear in noisy environments, confusing words or misunderstanding what’s being said in conversation or having to turn the T.V up. If you can identify with any of these, then it is important to book your FREE hearing assessment with ourselves by calling one of the numbers above, and we can then assess whether you have any degree of hearing loss.

What should I do next? The most important thing to do is not ignore it! In most cases hearing deteriorates gradually & it often affects people around you more than yourself. Wearing a hearing aid can make a real difference to your quality www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON| |23 9 www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Kirton Primary School

K

irton Primary School is the best state-funded primary school in Lincolnshire, according to a comprehensive new guide. The Real Schools Guide 2018, compiled by Trinity Mirror’s data unit, aims to give a far more comprehensive picture than traditional league tables. The Guide, now in its fifth year, has been praised by education experts.

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school?

Dr Elaine McCreery, head of primary initial teacher education at Manchester Metropolitan University, said the guide could help parents make decisions about where to apply for or be useful for those with children already at schools to get involved and support the school. This year’s results put Kirton Primary School near Boston on top as the best school in the local area.

oston College recently welcomed Lincolnshire Police as members of the police force and student officers worked with Uniformed Public Services students as part of their ongoing assessments. Many of the College’s UPS students are hoping to join the police force and so this experience was invaluable to them as they were able to gain an insight into the training and assessment process they hope to one day be involved in. Leanne Hodges, a level 1 UPS learner said: “I really enjoyed the day and I have learnt so much from the experience. It is not something you would normally be involved with and it will really help me in the future. I am currently a Police

Cadet and being able to role play alongside the Trainee Officers gave me a fantastic insight into real life situations and how they are dealt with. It not only helped me gain a further understanding but also develop my skills relevant to the course.” A total of 30 police officers were on-site to give student officers the chance to put their training into practice in real-life settings. Student officers were presented with a five scenarios of incidents which they had to attend to while assessors took notes and prepared feedback. Boston College UPS students were able to see police training being put into practice up close by being involved in these scenarios.

he school library at Boston Grammar school recently hosted a BGS old boy, Dr Julian Haseldine, to deliver a lecture on the school’s history within the context of the wider world through the 450 years since its establishment on the current site. The library, which was the original school room, housed a mix of current and

former pupils with compatriots at the Boston Latin School in Massachusetts watching via the internet. Dr Haseldine, currently senior lecturer in History at the University of Hull, shared some insights into the often tumultuous times the Grammar School has had to navigate through its history. John McHenry, Headteacher, speaking

after the event said ‘It was a great pleasure to welcome back one of our own past students to deliver what we hope will be the first of a series of guest lectures. Seeing the library used for its primary purpose of delivering education reinforces our school mission to be a beacon of educational excellence at the heart of our community.’

Follow Your Dreams The Chapman family, from Spalding, are on the final leg of their round-the-world trip, which began last September. Nigel, Louise and son Kian (8) are now in Asia, having been to the west coast of America, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Here, Nigel tells Simply the latest instalment of their travels:

out to be about the most expensive accommodation we’ve encountered. It was our first stop after leaving Australia and we stayed in an AirBnB small flat just outside the city centre. The airport is a snapshot of the city itself - modern, clean and attractive, it’s easy to see why it’s regarded by some as one of the world’s finest. The city waterfront is particularly attractive, with skyscrapers and magnificent hotels - none more so than the Marina Simply Magazines Advert - PRINT READY.pdf 1 16/01/2018 13:19:10 Bay Sands with

e’d always wondered if we’d make it to this point with some money left in the budget. Knowing Asia would be less of a squeeze on our money than the other destinations was one of the reasons we put it last on our itinerary. However, Singapore turned

its three segments joined by a “surfboard” top with an infinity pool and rooftop garden. Even with our prudent expenditure, unfortunately the finances didn’t stretch to a night there. The whole area is simply stunning at night (a popular image for postcards and tourism shots) and free lights and music shows in the harbour and Gardens In The Bay are breathtaking. Away from the decadence, Chinatown and Little India were interesting places to wander around. Getting a glimpse inside the enormous and beautiful temples was a new cultural experience for us all.

After four night, it was on to Malaysia. If truth be told, Louise and I weren’t that taken with Kuala Lumpur. Having been assured we’d enjoy it, we were a little disappointed to find it limited on attractions and not as easy on the eye as we’d anticipated. The Petronas Twin Towers once the world’s tallest building - was an exception, a fabulous spectacle even more stunning by night when simple lighting showcases it perfectly. Much classier than the KL Tower which is illuminated much more glitzily. Much better for us was the time we spent further north in Taman Negara - a national park

After learning about their survival skills and the efforts by the government to integrate them while allowing their culture and individuality to remain, Kian got to experience a blowpipe - and hit the target with a dart. A couple of days later a local guide took the three of us on a fascinating day-long scramble through caves and jungle, learning about the climate, rubber trees and the wildlife. It felt brilliant to have such a

his month we celebrate Mothering Sunday and I would like to share a story I overheard on the train last week. There were 2 thirtysomething women sitting in front of me going to London to see a musical. They were discussing the endlessness and unexpected loneliness of mothering and how their other halves were seemingly blind to the struggles there were experiencing. To cut a long story short, they had decided to treat themselves as they were not expecting anything other than homemade ‘yoghurt pot crafts’ from their other halves on behalf of their small children. It got me thinking about what we expect in return for parenthood and the sacrifices we inevitably make. Should we expect those sacrifices to be recognised and rewarded for them to be worthwhile? If we aren’t rewarded, are our endeavours ultimately unrecognised? What do we consider to be sufficient recognition? So many questions! I really do believe that Mothering Sunday shouldn’t be about ourselves. It should be about our own mothers. Not all people have children, but all people have a mother. For some, the mother-child relationship is strong; they are an active and welcome part of our lives. For some, relationships are more strained and infinitely more complex. For others, their mothers are no longer here, and this poses the most difficult question of all. How do we celebrate or improve upon the love we have for our own mothers when they aren’t here

to receive it? We still have a relationship with them (good and bad) regardless of their physical presence. Things that they did or said stay with us forever. Healing those things starts with self-love I think, with a side of forgiveness. As a mother, I feel I get it wrong most days in one way or another. I work too many hours, I’m short tempered, impatient, dole out exacting standards that I wouldn’t hold myself to, worry about the quality of the food I’m preparing, the number of hours sleep that are/aren’t being had, that playtime outweighs structured academic learning...the list goes on. When I am gone, I would like to think my son could forgive my endless short-comings. What am I teaching him if not to love himself enough to survive on his own and not to have to carry round the weight of the things he believes I got right or wrong? In the same way, I hope you can love, forgive and be grateful to your own mothers – with you or not, good relationship or bad, and embrace the endless circle of the Maiden, the Mother & the Crone. We are all doing the very best job we can, but sometimes that doesn’t always translate. Don’t base your worth as a mother in the ‘quality’ of the gift you get from your child. I would be immensely grateful and proud to receive ‘yoghurt pot crafts’ because March 11th is not about me; not about what I see as fit reward for my efforts. It about mothering, and that means it’s always about your child.

Your Childcare Choices If you’re planning to return to work after your maternity leave, you’ll need to organise childcare for your little one.

Day Nurseries Nursery staff are trained to create a safe and stimulating environment. Children are usually grouped by age, so your child will join in with activities suitable for his development. He’ll be assigned a keyworker, who is responsible for keeping you up to date on how your child’s getting on. Nurseries must meet certain national standards and teach a curriculum designed for young children, this is monitored via OFSTED. This provides a structure for your child’s learning and care. Day nurseries are different from nursery schools. Nursery schools, or preschools, are often attached to a primary school. They’re for children aged between three years and five years, and usually open during school term times only.

bedclothes A nanny should also assist in the physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of your child. This means doing things such as taking him swimming, reading to him, taking him to playgroups, or supporting him in reaching development milestones. Although nannies aren’t required to hold a qualification in childcare, most take on some form of formal training or study. Your nanny carries a lot of responsibility in caring for your child. So make sure you find a carer you trust, and that your child is comfortable with. If employing a nanny seems beyond your budget, it may be useful to know that some families share a nanny, splitting the costs and legal responsibilities.

Childminder Childminders can care for up to six children at a time, including their own. No more than three children should be younger than five, and of these three, only one should be under 12 months old. This means a childminder will be able to give your child plenty of attention and one-to-one care. Like day nurseries, childminders must be registered with the appropriate authority for their country. However, they must first complete a pre-registration course that covers topics such as child nutrition, food hygiene, and health and safety. Many childminders take on further studies to gain additional qualifications, such as a diploma or degree in childcare.

Au pair An au pair is a young person from abroad who has come to the UK to learn English. Typical responsibilities of an au pair include babysitting in the evenings, helping with light housework, and looking after your child during the day when needed. An au pair will stay in your home, as part of your family. You’ll need to pay her a small fee and provide her with meals and a bedroom. Most au pairs are not trained in childcare, although some may have done a bit of babysitting or looked after younger siblings. For this reason, many agencies suggest that au pairs are best suited to parents who have preschool or school-aged children.

Nanny What does a nanny do? A nanny is employed by you to care for your child in your own home. Depending on what you want your nanny to do and the age of your child, a nanny may be responsible for: • planning activities to suit your child’s age • feeding, bathing and dressing him • changing nappies, or helping him use the potty or toilet • preparing meals for him • cleaning his room • washing and ironing his clothes and

Could I use a relative for childcare? Many parents ask a grandparent or another relative to look after their children. Informal arrangements with relatives make up the majority of childcare arrangements. It’s low-cost and flexible, and it means your child will be looked after by someone he knows well in a familiar environment. Relative care works best if you have a good relationship with the relative, and if they’re willing and able to help. She’ll need to be happy to do things your way, so you may need to set out some ground rules.

30 Hours Free Childcare – Are you Getting All You Can? All 3 and 4-year-olds in England get 15 hours a week, or 570 hours a year of free early education. If their parents are living and working in England, 3 and 4-year-olds may be entitled to 30 hours free childcare. An extra 570 hours of free childcare a year, so 1140 hours in total. 30 hours free childcare was made available from September 2017. The eligibility criteria are the same as the ones for Tax-Free Childcare, except you can continue to get these types of support at the same time as 30 hours free childcare: • tax credits • Universal Credit • childcare vouchers or salary sacrifice schemes • childcare grants and bursaries When you apply, you’ll be confirming that you need childcare so that you and your partner, if you have one, can work. If your child’s already in a full-time reception class in a state funded school, you won’t be eligible for 30 hours free childcare. Weddings

Things You Should Not DIY For Your Wedding

W

hile we applaud brides who want to add a personal touch or save money by doing a little DIY for their wedding, we cannot stress enough how important it is to leave some things to the professionals – you don’t want to be left crying into your champagne on the day! Working out what you can and can’t DIY is simple there’s only one rule: if you can do it beforehand at home then go for it. For example your invitations and favours can all be made months in advance; but if it’s something that has to be done on the day such as coordinating, photography and catering we highly recommend you don’t attempt any of these tasks yourself. Wedding Coordinating So, you’ve planned your big day for months even years, you’ve organised every detail and envisioned exactly how your day will proceed with the help of your trusted family and friends. But no matter how organised you are there is always a possibility of things going wrong and by hiring a professional to coordinate the day you will reduce the chances of your event looking disorganised and hectic. With a dedicated

18 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

planner ensuring your day runs smoothly, your wedding will look and feel exactly how you imagined. Your Wedding Dress You may be a dab hand when it comes to sewing on a button but unless you’re a professional seamstress, never attempt to make alterations to your or your bridesmaids’ dresses. In many cases, the results can be permanent and could ruin the dress completely. If your bridal boutique offers a tailoring service, take it; their professional team will be able to make your dress look and feel like it was made for you. If you’re buying a dress off the rail and find it needs amending here and there, find a professional tailor. The last thing you want is to ruin your dream dress. Your Hair With millions of hair tutorials on Pinterest and YouTube it’s become extremely popular for many brides to attempt to recreate the look for their big day; the only problem is creating elaborate and elegant hair styles can be tricky, and trying to get the same look may not be as

easy as you first thought. This is one occasion you can’t afford a bad hair day. Your Wedding Photos We all know someone with a professional camera, a popular Instagram feed and an eye for detail, but when it comes to your big day remember you’re only going to have one chance to capture those special moments you will cherish. Hiring a professional photographer, who understands lighting, timing, angles and most importantly weddings will guarantee your wedding photos flow with the emotions and moments you will treasure for a life time. Your Wedding Food Wedding food is something we all expect to be as delightful as the rest of the occasion. Even though your mum or mother-in-law may make a mean roast, when it comes to feeding 50 or more guests, the wedding food is best left to the professionals. Catering for such large numbers requires experience, know-how, skills and most importantly equipment. So give your guests something to rave about and leave your wedding food to the experts.

Lorraine Chirstine Planning a wedding takes so much thought these days, but attire remains top of many bride-to-be’s priorities. As, such the bridal shops in Kirton are essential places to check out early well before the big day comes. Okay, so choosing the bridal gown is a big decision, but that is not all that you need to think about ahead of the big day. What about the rest of your attire? Mother’s Day

Why do we celebrate

Mother’s Day?

The origins of Mother’s Day date back to the ancient Greek times. The ancient Greeks dedicated an annual spring festival to maternal goddesses, and ancient Romans also celebrated a spring festival called Hilaria which was for a mother goddess called Cybele. In the 16th century it was considered highly

important to return to the main church in the area, known as the mother church, at least once a year. Most people would do this in the middle of Lent and use the opportunity to see their families. It is believed children would pick flowers on the way home from church and give them to their mothers, which is why we give flowers today.

In the UK, Mother’s Day 2018 is being celebrated on Sunday, March 11. The day does not have a fixed date as it is linked to Easter, which is determined by the lunar calendar and changes annually. Mother’s Day always falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent and three weeks before Easter Sunday.

There are many ways you can show your mum how much you love and respect her this year, from the simplest hug and kiss to more elaborate gifts and tokens of your appreciation. Here we’ have thought of a few ways you might want to display how much you care for your mum........

Take Her Out For Lunch Gather up your family and friends and celebrate Mother’s Day with an extra special celebration at your mums favourite restaurant.

that your mum normally does. This is a great idea for getting the children involved, and could be accompanied by gifts they may have made at school for her.

Book Of Memories Modern technology has made it super Take Her Shopping easy to create your own professional looking Most women love shopping, and chances you’re looking to avoid cliche of books, so why not gather up as many photos areIf your mother is no different. Take her the roses, chocolates you of yourcould mum as possible and submit them to to some of her favourite stores, and and if cards, the anway online book budget stretches far enough, for a treat always choose anpay alternative to making and printing service. Memories are often the most precious on the day! mark it , like one of the following things we have, and to be able to recollect those by flipping the pages of a book Weekend Away dedicated to her would be extra special. Either pay for your mum to enjoy a weekend away with her husband, a friend Make A Home Video or by herself, or you can accompany her to Every camera and smartphone these days make it extra special. Think about what she has a built in video camera, so it’s easy to enjoys and find a retreat that fits such as gather friends and family to make a short yoga, spa treatments and art.

video of everyone telling her how much she means to them. Smartphone apps and free online tools makes editing a breeze. The most important thing for mothers is almost always their family and friends, so no matter what you do, try and incorporate this into the day as best you can. Putting some effort and thought into the day, and thinking about how you can make Mother’s Day unique to her, will show her how special she is to you and your family. For all mothers their number one concern is the welfare and happiness of their children and grandchildren, so on this special day of the year it’s important to turn the tables and make sure she is well looked after. While gifts are always appreciated, often a kiss and an ‘I love you’ is the best way to express how much you care, and is what she’ll remember long after the day is over.

Technology To Stay In Touch If your mother doesn’t live close by, and hasn’t organised an easy, efficient way to stay in touch, why not set up the latest technology. Maybe all she needs is someone to set up her Skype account, make sure her internet connection is strong, or connect a webcam to her computer, but whatever it is make it easy for her to stay in touch and see your face. Give Mum The Day Off This one is easy and doesn’t require any financial outlay. Start the day by making her breakfast in bed, and then do any chores www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 23

Home & Property

Making the Most of a

Compact Bathroom Some small bathrooms make you feel like you have to lose weight to enter them, but I really like working on this type of bathroom design. Trying to make everything fit in the available space is like doing a giant crossword puzzle. Among the challenges: configuring the toilet and sink, allowing enough clearance for a shower and, of course, where to put the towel rails and toilet roll holder? Despite the challenges, in most cases it’s still better to squeeze in an extra bathroom where one is desperately needed, even if it must be small. Here are our tips for designing a small bathroom.

Select a vanit y unit wit h one shelf

Sink unit design has got smarter. Even a pedestal style with one shelf can hold towels or a basket for toilet paper. I personally love the way fresh, clean towels look when folded neatly in a bathroom.

Float the vanit y unit

Besides just visually helping the bathroom appear bigger, mounting a vanity unit above the floor frees up a little space for small items underneath.

Install a corner sink

Sometimes even a pedestal sink can disrupt the only available traffic lane in a bathroom. In this case, placing a corner sink across from the toilet works better than a sink across from the shower. The opening and closing of the shower door usually creates an awkward walk-around situation.

Use a shower curtain

A shower curtain that moves back and forth

24 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

saves space over a glass door that moves in and out. Shower-tub combos actually can fit into small spaces, with some tubs coming in at just over 1.5 metres in length.

Use a large-scale pattern

A big pattern, can trick the eye into seeing expanded space. The size might stay the same, but the bathroom will feel bigger.

Skip the shower door

If your bathroom is about 1.5 metres wide, that’s just enough space to squeeze in a toilet and a 75cm by 1.5 metre tub. With tight conditions such as these, consider a glass panel instead of a glass shower door. It will keep water in the shower and free up needed elbow room.

Expand the mirror

In the tightest spaces, having a mirror stretch across the wall instead of just the vanity unit can enable two people to use it at once. In less-than-ideal space conditions,

every centimetre helps.

Mount the towel rail on a door

Where can I hang the towels? I wish I had a penny for every time I heard that question. When space is at a premium, mounting a towel rail on the shower door keeps towels handy. You might need to store the bulk of your towels in a nearby linen closet, but having that one towel close by is essential.

Install a trough sink

The narrow, clean styling of a trough sink is a good-looking space solution. Trough sinks have a low profile. When wall mounted, they free up floor space as well for storage or foot traffic.

Use a wall-mounted tap

Mounting a tap on the wall allows for a narrower sink or vanity unit, which in turn frees up square footage in the total bathroom. Don’t be afraid to try a wall-mounted tap in traditional design. It works anywhere!

Audi A4 Avant 3.0 TDI quattro 218PS PROS ‘N’ CONS à Fast à Quiet à Kit à Ride à Thirsty

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS (3.0 TDI quattro 218PS)

F

itted with a 3.0 litre V6 engine, the latest Audi A4 Avant becomes almost too powerful for its own good. Don’t get me wrong; the diesel lump is a real pearl, but there’s no way it returns the claimed 57.6mpg when riding on 19-inch wheels. I found the car thirsty, and mid-30s was more realistic for me when driving twoup, with no luggage, on a mix of motorways, A and B-roads. The A4 estate model that Audi sent me came in top S line trim, and starts at £38,895, but with a few thousand pounds of options thrown at it, my test car was waving a £46,395 price-tag. You get a lot of kit for the cash, though and Audi is well-known for its upmarket, understated interiors that are both perfectly finished and intuitive. This A4 doesn’t dissatisfy; it has upscale materials everywhere and a straightforward, intelligible dashboard arrangement. Technology is plentiful, too. It includes: a reversing camera, parking sensors, three-zone climate control, heated electric seats, and a powered, hands-free boot.

The A4 Avant is among the best-looking estates on the market in Britain. It’s undeniably classy, and the large 3.0 litre diesel engine is so smooth that it feels more like a hard-hitting petrol unit. What’s more, indiscernible wind and road noise make the A4 the quietest cruiser in its class – by a long chalk. The ride is wonderful, and easily a match for BMW’s 3-series. The same goes for the car’s bob-on handling. This practical five-up estate comes with Audi’s standard seven-speed S tronic automatic gearbox. It changes slickly, keeping the revs low except when Dynamic mode is selected. A moderate push of your right foot is all that’s required to build momentum hastily; stamp down hard, though and you’ll get to 62mph in just 6.4 seconds.

à Max speed: 152 mph à 0-62 mph: 6.4 secs à Combined mpg: 57.6 à Engine layout: 2967cc six-cylinder turbo diesel à Max. power (PS): 218 à CO2: 126 g/km
