Welcome to the June issue For me 2019 is flying by, since January 1st it has felt like countdown until the day my first born starts school. Such a huge change in our house, the routine, the constraints that school brings, the apprehension of how he will cope but also the excitement of the ‘next chapter’ in watching him grow.

It’s true what they say that once you have children life goes much faster.

I cannot believe it is 4 years since he joined us, that time has whizzed by but at the same time I often ask myself what did we do with our time before children? Normally I think (dream of) sleep!

So, we are signing out for a couple of weeks this month for some much needed R&R and making the most of term time holiday prices, while we can get away with it! There’s almost so much to plan before a holiday, pet sitters, passports, car parking, money, stuff to entertain the children, catching up on work, what to actually pack as well as planning what to do whilst you are away. My husband, I am sure will wake up on ‘holiday morning’ and think all the fairies sorted everything out!!!!

But before we jet off we have a magazine to get to you. In this issue we have advice on replacing windows and doors, information to help you if you are caring for an elderly friend or relative as well as inspiration if you have ever thought of learning a new skill or returning to college.

Don’t forget it is Father’s Day on June 16, we have lots of ideas and inspiration for you. If you need an excuse it is National Fish and Chip Day on June 7, so head down to your local chippie and give them some support!

Annette this month gives advice on how to give yourself a break and stop expecting too much of yourself, something I think many parents can be guilty of at times. Who is perfect anyway?

Well, for now, all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and see you next month!

News The Long Ride Home Sleaford golfers cycling over 400 miles in 4 days to raise £10k for Lincolnshire charity LIVES Ten golfers with a combined age of almost 700 are ditching their clubs for cycles, to peddle over 400 miles in just three days, to raise money for LIVES. Members of the Saturday 9ers, from Sleaford Golf Club, have already smashed their £5k target and have now set their sights on raising £10k. They are cycling from Truro in Cornwall to arrive in Heckington on 5th May, in memory of their golfing buddy, Andy ‘Stix’ Thomas.

Former RAF bandsman, Andy, (pictured below), died suddenly aged just 51, in 2018, despite the valiant efforts of LIVES first responders to save his life.

said: “We wanted to do something to celebrate Andy’s life; hence the charity cycle ride from his place of birth to his adopted Lincolnshire home, plus other fundraising activities for LIVES, seemed a fitting tribute.”

“We’ve witnessed how those first few minutes can make all the difference,” added Rob. “If we can achieve our new £10k target, it could fund over 2,000 LIVES first responder call-outs; 1,000 opportunities to provide oxygen therapy; or 500 defibrillator pads, to help save local peoples’ lives.”

Blue Flag success for our coastal resorts BEACHES at Skegness, Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea, which are managed by East Lindsey District Council, have once again achieved prestigious Blue Flag status.

Central Beach Skegness, Central Beach Mablethorpe and Central Beach Sutton on Sea have all retained the Award, which looks at the water quality, facilities, beach safety, environmental education and management of the beaches.

Environmental Health Manager, David Dodds, said: “We are delighted to have retained the Blue Flag at all our main beaches. The status gives local people and visitors the confidence to know that our beaches are well maintained and meet water quality standards. The Blue Flag success is down to our teams work hard from

early morning until late evening to help make the resorts look their best.

Economic Development Manager, Jon Burgess also welcomed the announcement of the Blue Flag status; “We know that the number of visitors to the Lincolnshire coast is increasing each year. The Blue Flag status is an important recognition that the Council’s continued investment in the care of our beaches ensures that residents and visitors can continue to enjoy their time spent in a high quality natural environment”.

The privately owned beach at Ingoldmells has also been awarded Blue Flag status.

The Blue Flag Award is managed in England by Keep Britain Tidy and internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

Half year results - Sales up 3.4 per cent Sales at Lincolnshire Co-op have grown by £5m to £165m this half year, with a strong performance by the Society’s food stores leading the way.

Total sales in the six months to 3rd March 2019 went up by 3.4 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Food stores saw sales rise by 6.5 per cent, with customer visits up by 5.7 per cent to 12.6 million in the half year. This included a successful festive trading period with a record-breaking Christmas Eve. Demand for goods from the Society’s local bakers Gadsby’s went up 4.3 per cent.

Sales growth has enabled Lincolnshire Co-op to invest in valued services and new developments across its trading estate.

Lincolnshire Co-op uses green power from wind farms and hydro-electric

plants and is also focused on reducing energy use.

The Society has invested in energy-saving technologies like LED lighting and building management systems in food stores. Fridge doors have also been fitted in more than 30 outlets – cutting energy use by around 20 per cent.

Lincolnshire Co-op’s Chief Executive Ursula Lidbetter said: “We’re pleased to welcome over 12,000 new members to the Society and attract more customers, particularly considering challenging trading conditions.

“Our sales performance shows the quality of our offer across a range of diverse businesses. This gives us the confidence to invest in our valued services and keep on using our ideas, energy and resources to work together in our communities on projects that make a difference – from the Cornhill Quarter to reducing energy use in our business.”

Take a gentle stroll between Fydell House and the Stump and centuries of history contained within the architecture unfolds before you. And from next month (May) you will be able to find out more about Boston’s illustrious past and the stories contained within those walls.

Jane Keightley, Boston born and bred, has a lifelong passion for the town’s history and is to pass on her knowledge in a series of history walks.

The first is on Wednesday, May 8, and will

be repeated every Wednesday at 10.30am through the summer and on Sundays from 2pm for visitors and locals. They will all start at Fydell House and take about an hour.

The talking tour will take in the histories of Fydell House, the Guildhall, Gysor’s Hall, Blackfriars, Shodfriars, the Market Place, the Stump, the Herbert Ingram Memorial, Bargate, the War Memorial, Pescod Hall, Masonic Hall, Pump Square, Dolphin Lane and back to Fydell House, covering the Medieval period to more

modern times.

Jane said: “I have always taken an interest in Boston’s history. There is such a great story to tell and this tour will cover some of the main elements – the Hanseatic merchants, the friaries, the Pilgrim Fathers and the Georgian period, among others.

Column After the local council elections on May 2, Cllr Michael Cooper, re-elected for the Five Villages ward on Boston Borough Council, has been elected leader of the ruling Conservative group on the council.

The leader of the council will be elected at the annual general meeting of the council on Monday, May 20, when the new Cabinet members will be announced.

The make-up of the council after the elections was Conservatives 16 seats, Independents 11, UKIP 1, Labour 1 and Labour and Co-operative Party 1.

The new Mayor, Cllr Anton Dani, will be appointed at the annual general meeting of the council on Monday, May 20.

New council but same challenges Boston Borough Council’s post-election administration is gearing up to face a challenging future – but we are full of optimism after already meeting austerity funding cuts without any reduction in services.

I was pleased that the Conservative group, in light of results nationally, retained the majority of 16 seats.

We bucked the trend and held our ground.

We ran a strong and targeted campaign and have done a good job over the last four years in very difficult circumstances.

People, on the whole, are happy with how we are running the council, doing as much as we can with decreasing funds. We’ve not had to cut any services despite a 60 per cent cut in funding.

The challenges for the future remain the same, with lots of uncertainties surrounding the future for council’s finances at present.

The major challenge will be a cut in Government funding to zero in the next two years. From 2020 on we will have to fund all services through council tax – and we are allowed to keep very little of that – fees and charges, such as car parks, and business rates.

Last year the council was included in a Government pilot project where, for a year, it was allowed to retain more of the business rates.

If we are to continue to provide all services we will have to be more commercial and agile.

Boston, in common with the whole of the east coast, has additional difficulties in raising revenue from business rates. Agriculture is the main industry, but large swathes of this industry are business rates exempt.

We will be doing all we can to encourage business growth, but we are at a disadvantage compared with councils in areas where agriculture is not the main industry and more traditional commercial and industrial development is the main stay.

Often these areas also have better transport links.

We will push ahead with the distributor road to improve transport links and ease town centre congestion. This has to be, in the main, self financing and, as with other new roads projects in the county, is reliant on funding generated by development, including more housing,. The Quadrant project is moving forwards to assist this project.

No one is pretending any of these challenges will be easy to meet, but we will continue to do all we can to support the community.

A new council means a new corporate plan and strategy and I will be pleased to hear from anyone about what is important to them to help prioritise the use of the council’s limited resources.

Advice Scams Awareness

Scams are schemes to con you out of your money. They can arrive by post, phone call, text message or email, or from someone coming to your home.

Spotting a Scam Scammers try to get your personal details to get money from you or steal your details so they can pretend to be you.

If you think someone might be trying to scam you, don’t: • give them any personal information, like bank details, computer passwords or PIN numbers • reply to their email or click on any links • download any attachments or files in emails • send them any money or buy anything • ring any numbers in emails or letters you receive • let them into your house if they’re at your door If you’ve lost money because of a scam, you can report it.

Check the warning signs It’s easier to spot a scam if you know what to look for.

Be careful if something: • comes out of the blue or from someone you don’t know • sounds out of the ordinary - like you’ve won the lottery, or you’ve been invited to invest in an ‘amazing’ scheme and keep it a secret • asks you to pay for something in advance - especially by bank transfer • asks you for personal information

- like your bank details, computer passwords or PIN numbers • pressures you into buying something or making a decision quickly - a trustworthy company will be happy to wait • asks you to phone an expensive number - these start with 070, 084, 087, 090, 091 or 098 You can check recent scams on Action Fraud’s website and common financial scams on the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) website.

If you’ve been contacted about making an investment, check if the company is registered with the FCA on their website. If it’s not, it’s probably a scam.

If someone is offering to do building work for you, don’t let them start immediately and ask them for references - this will give you time to check if they’re reliable.

Spotting a fake email or website Scam emails ask you for personal information like passwords or bank details to get money. This is called ‘phishing’.

They often look like they’re from a real company - like a bank or building society. Remember that your bank will never ask you to confirm personal details by clicking on an email link.

If you’re not sure if it’s a scam,

check: • the email or website address - if it’s a scam, it might have a strange address or come from a free email provider like Gmail • for spelling mistakes trustworthy websites are less likely to have them • if the website starts with https:// - this means the information you send on the website is secure, but the website could still be a scam • if the website has a green padlock in the website address bar - this means the information you send on the site is private If you think you’re being scammed online Don’t click on anything and leave the website. You might want to keep the email as evidence in case you report the scam.

If you’ve had an email something that looks like it’s from your bank, contact your bank directly using the number on your card. You can also log into your account on their website - use Google to find the real one.

You can also block the email sender or mark an email as ‘spam’ or ‘junk’ - this means you won’t see them in your inbox. Check your email provider’s help section for instructions on how to do this.

Reporting a scam You might be able to stop others from being scammed if you report a scam.

You should report the scam to more than one organisation - report it to: 1. the Citizens Advice Consumer Service first 2. Action Fraud - or Royal Mail if you’ve been scammed by post If you know the scam has come from abroad, you should report it to econsumer.gov.

Give as much information as you can - for example, dates, names and email addresses.

Contact your bank or building society straight away if you’ve shared your bank details. Your bank might be able to refund some of the money or block your cards.

If you’ve been threatened with violence, report it to the police on 101.

Report a scam to Consumer Service Report the scammer to the Citizens Advice Consumer Service online or by phone 03454 04 05 06.

They will: • give you advice on what to do next • report the scam to Trading Standards - they might investigate to see if the business has acted illegally or unfairly

Wisbech Grammar School and Magdalene House Preparatory School Wonka’s Golden Ticket was a magical performance put on by Prep School pupils; performed to parents, visitors and staff “The performance from our pupils left us with a great sense of pride as they sang, danced and acted this year’s production, Wonka’s Golden Tickets. The colourful array of costumes combined with the outstanding props and lighting made for a spectacular display showing our pupils’ finest talents. The dedication of the staff to support our pupils in gaining the confidence to perform and reach their potential in this area of the curriculum is truly amazing and something I am so grateful for.

Gosberton House Academy

7 Pupils from Gosberton House Academy took part in Bikebaility training recently. All pupils achieved level 1 with 4 pupils achieving level 2 awards.

Bikeability is the only approved bicycle training programme supported by The Department for Transport. It is designed to enthuse participants about cycling whilst equipping them with the skills and confidence to ride more often. The level 2 took place on the local streets of Gosberton, giving the pupils a real cycling experience. Well done to all those who took part!

Recently Boston High School became an official Young Journalist Academy Newsroom and were presented the certificate by Sam Atkins from YJA. We also have two students who now have work published on the Young Journalist Academy website. Paige has written a variety of articles, mostly food related, and Keira has written an article on showing sheep which has had thousands of hits worldwide!

On the 18th of March, the 2018-2019 Student Leadership Team said their final goodbyes in their last ever assembly.

This included a recap by the head students of all the things they, and their teams, have achieved over the last year, followed by a video compiled with photos from the events we’ve organised and held as a team. It’s incredible to see how much we’ve achieved in just one year, and to see the impact everyone on the team has had.

Miss. Biscoe, Head of Sixth Form, commented that ‘”they have been a truly wonderful team, who have achieved so much. We value their time, effort and commitment. You have all been spectacular.”

In total, this year’s Student Leadership Team has raised a phenomenal total of £11,797.22 for various charities.

Massive thank you to everyone on this year’s Student Leadership Team, and good luck to the 2019-2020 Student Leadership Team who will begin their roles in April!

W

e are complex creatures. We arrive to parenthood with a wide range of life experiences that ultimately shape how we view and behave as people.

Society always impacts on our behaviour and beliefs – what is seen as acceptable, what is not…and these too change with time and trends.

When we embark on any new relationship – parenthood, friendship, marriage, we have expectations and ideals about how that is going to turn out.

We create whole little worlds in our head of how things will be.

When the reality doesn’t turn out quite how you expected we are left feeling that we have failed somehow in our new role.

One emotion that I see over and over again is grief. This is typically tied up with losing someone – either someone has died or are no longer in the fold but is also always involved in the letting go of what “isn’t” or the difference between expectation and reality. Grief is valid for many situations – the old you, the you that knew what they were doing, your old pre-baby life, an old partner, a new relationship that promises to make our lives better…many situations. Tears usually always follow grief – for women, crying is about wanting something to stop.

That could be the huge like the stop the world I want to get off feeling, or the smaller things like you want to stop feeling a certain way about a situation, yourself or another person.

Crying is good for us – despite the societal presumption that it makes us weak. It’s a reset for our hormones (which certainly don’t help

matters when we’ve just had a baby), it gives us a release that doesn’t involve punching something and it allows us to see what really upsets us and therefore ultimately to know ourselves better. Being honest with ourselves about our grief is the first step in dealing with it but that is often the hardest. Pay attention to your tears, there might be a range of other emotions involved, but we only cry at the things that really upset us. What it is about the situation that makes it a problem for you?

Then, more importantly, why is that aspect a problem. Almost always the answer will come back to expectation vs. reality with a sprinkling of personal experience on the side. I talk a lot about forgiving other people, but where grief is concerned, you have to learn how to forgive yourself.

Forgiveness for all your actual and perceived shortcomings, for the mistakes you have made and those you are yet to make (yes, forgive yourself in advance – it works wonders when you actually do make the mistakes!) and forgiveness for throwing your toys out the pram when you don’t get what it is you think you want. We are human, we make mistakes but that doesn’t mean that everything is bad because one part of our lives isn’t living up to what we felt it would be. Learn to be a little more flexible and new opportunities and ways to be will open themselves up to you.

Mini Police

As I write this article, most of our Mini Police schools are helping their Year 6 pupils prepare for the SATs, having only recently returned from the Easter break. Ordinarily this would mean that it would be rather quiet in terms of Mini Police engagements, however our schools across the Boston and South Holland areas have been busy carrying out numerous tasks both in and out of the classroom.

Below are a few examples of some of the important work being carried out by our children: Pupils from Sutterton Fourfields Church of England Primary school carried out their CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) task with PCSO Williams, learning about the investigation of crime scenes, how the police identify and gather different types of evidence from crime scenes, how that evidence is examined and what the police can use that evidence for in their investigations. They learnt about fingerprints, taking their own and learning how each and every one of us is different. They also got the opportunity to draw upon the interview skills, having to think about ‘open’ questions to work out which of their suspects (teachers) was guilty.

Mini Police from several local schools including Fleet Wood Lane Primary school and Moulton Chapel Primary School have been Kindness Secret Agents, carrying

out secret ‘random acts of kindness’ both in and out of school. Fleet Wood Lane Mini Police then went on to carry out a Litter Pick in their local neighbourhood, making it a better place for everyone.

Mini Police from Moulton Chapel have decided that their ‘random act of kindness’ will be to carry out a sponsored walk around the school field, raising money for a charity supporting greyhounds.

Wrangle Primary Mini Police had a special invitation to assist Boston’s Neighbourhood Policing Sgt Matt Dickinson with the launch of a new Police Office ran by volunteers at Pilgrim Hospital. Mini Police were there to promote the scheme which provides patients, staff and visitors with the opportunity to engage with police volunteers at the new office, providing crime prevention advice and building trust between hospital users and the police. They visited different wards across the hospital site, informing the patients and visitors about the new Police Office which is open on Tuesdays and Fridays between 1100 and 1600.

Supporting the Lincolnshire Police ‘Fatal 4’ road safety campaign is one of the Mini Police ‘National Priorities’.

The Fatal 4 task looks at the four biggest causes of serious injury and deaths on Lincolnshire’s roads – Excess speed, Drink/Drug driving, Mobil phone use and not

wearing seatbelts. Mini Police from several schools including Westmere Primary (Sutton Bridge), Long Sutton Primary School and Billingborough Primary school carried out speed checks outside the local schools, with any vehicles found to be driving above the speed limit were stopped and invited to speak with the Mini Police who had prepared questions to ask and information to provide to drivers to educate them on the dangers of inappropriate or excessive speed. Several drivers were stopped at each site, spoken with and given suitable words of advice.

As we move towards the final half-term of the academic year, and (hopefully) nicer weather, our Mini Police will be taking part in more engagements in and around their local communities. If you see them, please say ‘Hello’.

They will undoubtedly want to share their knowledge and explain what they are doing.

Family Life Time for Lincolnshire to start talking and include people with dementia in Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Action Week Alzheimer’s Society urged people of Lincolnshire to join their #AskUsAnything campaign during Dementia Action Week (20-26 May) by including people with dementia and starting a conversation. But this is not the end, dementia is happening every day and so it’s important to raise awareness all year long.

Local events throughout Dementia Action Week helped people to start a conversation and unite against dementia, which affects 11000 people in Lincolnshire. Local events included: • 20 May – Dementia Action Week in the Legends Lounge at Lincoln City FC from 10am to 4pm. Includes a Singing for the Brain session at 12.30pm, Dementia Friends Information Session at 2pm and Country Dancing at 3pm.

• 20 May – 24 May – events throughout the week at Age UK Lincoln and South Lincolnshire with supporting organisations providing information and advice.

• 21 May – Relaunch of the Grantham Dementia Café at Belton Park Golf Course from 10am to 12noon.

Research shows that despite almost all of us knowing someone affected by the condition, two-thirds of people living with dementia report feeling isolated and lonely.

People living with dementia have starred in a video to answer questions that are busting myths and showing that people with dementia are still the same people.

As part of the #AskUsAnything campaign, everyone is urged to share the video – that will appear on Alzheimer’s Society’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and in cinemas across the UK – far and wide throughout Dementia Action Week.

Public awkwardness and anxiety plays a part in the isolation that people living with dementia experience – over half of the general public reported that they didn’t feel confident inviting

someone with dementia to a meal at home.

In the UK, one person develops dementia every three minutes so small acts of kindness such as calling a relative with dementia, visiting a neighbour or becoming a Dementia Friend, can help towards creating a dementia-friendly generation.

Phil Measures, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager in Lincolnshire said: “Many people are worried about ‘saying the wrong thing’ to someone with dementia, yet a friendly face or listening ear can make the world of difference. Even in the later stages of dementia when having a conversation might become difficult, keeping in touch can bring feelings of happiness and comfort, especially as the ‘emotional memory’ remains with them long after the memory of the

biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia.

It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition, tackling the lack of understanding that means many people with the condition experience loneliness and social exclusion.

The over 400 dementia friendly communities across England & Wales see local businesses committing to support their customers and employees affected by dementia.

From the taxi driver to the hairdresser and the bus company to the newsagent, everyone can identify things they can do to support people with dementia to live the lives they want and be involved in their local communities.

Window Trends For 2019 What are some of the things people are looking for when they decide to replace their windows? We take a look at the trends we’re seeing on people’s wish lists; the top 3 window trends right now.

Maximising Light The primary reason for installing windows in our homes is to let in light. It’s the very reason windows were invented! It makes sense then to ensure that we get the maximum amount of light possible.

There are many things to consider when replacing your windows; budget, uPVC versus aluminium, timber versus timber-effect, colour, window furniture, etc. However, another important factor is the frame. If you want to maximise the amount of light coming in – and your views out – choose a window design with as little frame as possible. Aluminium frames are one of the slimmest available but there are other ways to reduce the amount of frame.

Don’t assume you have to replace your windows like for like. If your current windows have fan lights – the little windows at the top – are they really necessary? How often do you use them? Would it matter if you opened the main sash instead? Most double glazed windows have a night lock option for secure ventilation. This allows you to have the main sash open in a locked position. The gap is wide enough to allow for a draft on warm days, or to let the kitchen smells out, but not so wide that the cat can escape

retain that light & airy look and feel, while subtly segmenting zones. With their black, slim frames, steel windows are striking yet minimal and can suit many different styles of homes. The steel is often recycled, strong and thermally efficient.

This is particularly useful if your windows are north or east facing. Windows with low-e glass will improve the energy efficiency of your home as well as reduce your heating bills and carbon footprint.

New Nissan Qashqai 1.3 DiG-T The Nissan Qashqai has been around for 11 years, and it is still a hugely popular model, ranking as Britain’s fourth most popular new motor.

Only Volkswagen’s Golf, Vauxhall’s Corsa and Ford’s Fiesta fly out of dealerships more quickly.

Back in 2007, consumers fell in love with the oddly named Qashqai’s blend of room, SUV styling and affordability. Since then, the Japanese automaker has kept the Qashqai name rocking –

The new infotainment system and petrol engines only strengthen the Qashqai’s name further, validating Nissan’s flexibility in the constantly-fluctuating automotive arena. and the present incarnation of the car has been rolling off production lines since 2013.

Nissan has not been resting on its laurels, though.

but the major news comes under the hood. The previous 1.6-litre and 1.2-litre petrol turbos have been kicked to the kerb with a 1.3 becoming the

new kid in town.

The new petrol turbo powerplant comes with a couple of outputs – 140ps and 160ps - and is the engine currently housed in Mercedes-Benz’s A200. The unit is also more efficient with an exhaust particulate filter helping it make the grade in the latest emissions testing processes. As mentioned, Nissan claims the 1.3 petrol turbo is cheaper to run too, as service intervals have leapt to 18,000 miles.

They used to be 12,500 miles, so this is a significant increase.

The car is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch auto ‘box, as tested for this review. It’s worth noting, though, that the automatic is only offered with the 160ps unit.

your heart racing. Zero to 62mph arrives in 9.9 seconds, and the top speed is 124mph. While the steering is light and precise, it’s not the best handling motor in its class.

The cabin is the same as ever, and the infotainment unit looks identical. However, the software is brand new, resulting in fast loading times, and the screen responds far more quickly when you touch it. It will now identify swiping and pinching motions, and the home page can be personalised with apps and shortcuts. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come factory-fitted as standard on all bar the entry-level model.

The infotainment system on the Qashqai Tekna+ 1.3 DiG-T DCT we drove is still not unflawed though. The display is too dim, and you can’t see much when the sun is on it because the seven-inch matt surface gives off a lot of glare. Mind you; it’s much better than the former system.

Nissan forecasts segment-leading residuals for the modern Qashqai, with many versions holding over 50 per cent of their value over three years.

This means that finance deals are very reasonable right now.
