Anniversary celebrations to mark 60 years of twinning Boston’s special relationship with its French twin Laval marks its diamond anniversary this year. For the past 60 years, representatives from both communities, have travelled back and forth across The Channel and it is no exaggeration to say we have become firm friends. The driving forces have been the opportunities to sample the differences in the way of life and the similarities in sporting interests. Archery has been a shared pursuit and bowmen and women and other athletes from Laval and Boston have enjoyed friendly rivalry battling for ownership of the Valentine Cup. It is hoped stronger sporting links can be forged to maintain the link with Laval for the future, possibly through activities seeing a resurgence in both communities, such as cycling and rugby. Anyone interested in furthering these links should contact Ian Clayton, Chairman of the Boston International Committee, for more information. Call 01205 363976 and 07812 682123 or email Ian at glenhurst@btinternet.com A civic party from Boston, was invited to visit Laval, to join in the diamond anniversary celebrations. As guests of honour Boston’s VIPs were invited to a civic reception at the Town Hall, organised in order to renew the historical and very precious twinning agreement, which lies at the very heart of our Municipal friendship. The twinning organisation has a website with more detail and pictures - www.boston-lavaltwinning.org For an English version of the Laval Tourist Information website go to http://www.laval-tourisme. com/en/discover

Back grant bid by local attraction A local tourist attraction and educational facility needs your help to make it more resilient. The We’ll Meet Again Second World War Museum at Freiston needs your vote to win a £2,500 grant. The project has been accepted by the Calor Rural Community Fund for a public vote starting next month. Voting opened on May 25 until June 29. For more information about the museum’s bid go to www.calor.co.uk/ communityfund/we-ll-meet-againmuseum-ww2-teaching-facility Museum owners Paul and Linda Britchford said: “We are in the process of upgrading to solar panels for the museum in order to be more green. As part of this process we would like to install in the

area to the side of the museum an LPG standby generator with automatic activation that would be able to cut in should there be a power failure. Due to our location we can be susceptible to power cuts which could interrupt the teaching. This would allow us to remain open, and if children were in the museum a teaching day would not be interrupted by a power cut.” The museum is open to the public on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays, but is actually more of a teaching facility for mainly primary school children. Schools locally and from futher afield regularly attend.

Paul added: “We also cater for other groups such as the Normandy Veterans, the Evacuees Association, Dementia Groups, Women’s Institute groups just to mention a few. “Many local people have supported the museum and donated items to us and we also have a very enthusiastic set of volunteers who the museum could not function without. Born here, lived here, ready to serve here She’s Boston – all the way through It’s a cliché to say that if Judith Skinner was a stick of rock she’d have BOSTON written all the way through her. But the 484th Mayor IS Boston through and through. Judith was born at the former Wyberton West Hospital and has lived all her life in the borough. She will make it her mission during her year in office to promote the Boston she knows and loves. “I’m a cup half full sort of person and I believe that Boston has a lot going for it,” she said. She has had a long stint at the helm of the Prosperous Boston task group, collecting evidence and investigating ways in which the town can be better for residents, shoppers and for those who work and visit here. Judith’s father came from farming stock and her late parents were smallholders at The Broads, Old Leake, and then Sibsey Road, where she lived with her two older sisters, who now live in Bournemouth and New Zealand. She was educated at Butterwick Primary School – at the infants’ school and then a few hundred yards along the road at the junior school - before going to Giles Secondary School. After a short spell in the accounts department of seed merchants Sinclair McGill she joined Lloyds Bank where, apart from a break to have her first daughter, she has worked ever since. Judith met Paul at a dance at Freiston when she was just 15 and a school friend of his sister. They were married just before her 20th birthday and then along came Amy (28), a pharmacist in Great Yarmouth, and Megan (23), a product design teacher at Lutterworth College. Judith and Paul live at Fishtoft. Paul is a Fishtoft Parish Councillor, so Judith had an insight into public service before she became

a Boston Borough Councillor in 2011. Paul (60) is also a Lincolnshire County Councillor and has been a Boston Borough Councillor since 2015 and is portfolio holder for regulatory services Judith (56) said she is interested in environmental issues and the way that history can inform innovation. She is hopeful that an avalanche of positive comment about Boston can overwhelm the negative and portray the town as a place that more people would want to work, live and visit. “I am excited to be Mayor. I have had lots of good wishes and I want to live up to it. I am looking forward to meeting people and having the opportunity to promote Boston,” she said. Away from work and council Judith and Paul have been members of the Caravan Club for 25 years and have more recently moved from caravan to camper van after using one in New Zealand on a trip to visit Judith’s sister. Paul is a keen cyclist and canoeist, but it’s when he rides one of his motorcycles that Judith joins in – so watch out for the Mayor at Boston Bike Night, possible arriving on the pillion of a 1961 650cc BSA Super Rocket or

a rare 750cc Honda Nighthawk. Judith has chosen Macmillan Cancer Support and the Alzheimer’s Society as her charities for the year. She chose Macmillan because in 2009 she had breast cancer. She is now in complete remission but said the experience gave her a different perspective of life. She has previously raised funds for Cancer Research UK and Lloyds Bank has a programme to help customers suffering from cancer. She has chosen the Alzheimer’s Society after having first-hand experience of people living with dementia after attending a Lloyds Bank Day To Make A Difference when she visited the dementia cafe held at the Len Medlock Centre and saw the good work done by reminiscence demonstrators who need funding. Lloyds will contribute to the funds Judith raises for the two charities. She thanked the bank for enabling her to accept Mayoral duties, and colleagues at work who will swap days to accommodate her appointments. Deputy Mayor will be Cllr Yvonne Stevens and her consort will be her eldest son, Vincent Forinton.

here has been a lot in the news, locally, regionally and nationally, about recycling and a fall in recycling rates because of contamination. The definitions of contamination, so far as the recycling collection is concerned, are items placed in the recycling bins which cannot be recycled, or recycled items being spoiled by residue from items which have not been properly washed out. I do accept that recycling can be a bit of a science. Most residents know that cans, bottles, paper (but not shredded paper) and cardboard can be recycled. But there is a lot of confusion around plastics. We aim to address this confusion soon with a video presentation available on the council’s website. This will be presented in response to a recent request by the council for residents to tell us what the problem areas are. I want to thank everyone who has responded. These have highlighted the confusions which do exist, and that our residents want to do the right thing. There is an existing information leaflet about recycling, but it is evident that this does not cover every eventuality. So we will design a new leaflet with the aim of covering all the issues so far raised. There will also be visits to known areas of high contamination to advise residents face-to-face. We will also be holding advice sessions in the Market Place. All of this builds to July 1, when the council will have to begin using legislation enabling it to issue £75 fines to persistent and serious offenders. We have allowed for a period of information and education. Regular offenders will receive

Cllr David Brown, pictured, is Boston Borough Council’s new Cabinet member for environment, with portfolio responsibilities for street cleansing, green waste, refuse and recycling and environmental health. He takes over from Cllr Michael Brookes, a borough councillor since 1997 and a Cabinet member for a total of 12 years, who has decided to step down from the Cabinet to make more time for himself and his family. He will continue as a borough councillor. He has been a Lincolnshire County Councillor since 2009 and will continue in that role. He has been a member of Swineshead Parish Council since 1983. He routinely attends parish council meetings in the nine villages within his council wards.

advice when their collection is contaminated, followed by a formal warning and further advice before receiving a £75 fine. This is not to penalise people who make an honest mistake but to penalise those who just don’t care, wilfully continue and just won’t make any attempt to recycle. The council will not make any money from the new enforcement measures, but better recycling will save all council tax payers’ cash. Contamination, by such things as used nappies and food waste, is now running at 35 per cent. That’s 2.45 tonnes in every full bin lorry load. On one recycling collection round 160 contaminated blue bins were recorded. And up to 25 per cent of the general waste can be recycled. Dealing with contamination in the recycling collection costs everybody more money and impacts the environment as material cannot be recovered for recycling. I also want to remind people that they should not put batteries, or any electrical item, in either their green or blue bins. Batteries are thought to have been responsible for three recent fires in the rubbish collections. You can take old batteries to collection points at many of the major supermarkets and electrical items can be disposed of for free at the new household waste recycling centre in Bittern Way. If you have a large electrical item to dispose of, such as a television, fridge or freezer for example, you can book a bulky waste collection by the council on 01205 314200. There is a small charge for this additional service. We also offer a competitivelypriced commercial waste and recycling collection service to local businesses, providing refuse

sacks or a variety of differentsized wheeled bins selected to meet your specific needs. The amount you pay for the service is based on the size of bin required and the frequency of collection you require. The service is local, provided by friendly staff and the price you pay is all inclusive. There are no hidden costs, no VAT and no hire or purchase fee for your bin(s). We will invoice you for the annual cost which you may choose to pay quarterly or by Direct Debit, which is quick and simple to set up. For a no obligation quote, tailored to meet your needs, or for further information about our commercial waste and recycling service, please contact our Commercial Waste Team at commercialwaste@boston.gov.uk or alternatively call our Customer Service team on 01205 314200. And it’s still not too late to sign up to have your garden waste collected – full details at www. boston.gov.uk/gardenwaste A reminder, too, that the law has changed and the keeper of a vehicle from which litter is thrown, which includes cigarette ends, is now responsible and will receive a fixed penalty notice if litter is thrown from a vehicle. Finally, I think congratulations are in order. This year’s Big Boston Clean Up recovered the least amount of street litter in the 11 years that it has been running – down from 10.6 tonnes in 2008 to 3.8 tonnes this year. That wasn’t because there were fewer volunteers, but because there was less litter to pick up. And that must be because fewer are dropping litter. Despite what some may think, the town is getting cleaner. Cigarette litter is now the biggest issue. Smokers can no longer throw a cigarette end down without a care. It’s littering and could cost you a £75 fine.

Human trafficking and general immigration advice Human trafficking is the trade of people for exploitation and commercial gain. If you think someone has been trafficked, you can help make them safe. Identify human trafficking Human trafficking doesn’t just happen in the sex industry. People are exploited in construction, farming and even working in other people’s homes. Usually people who have been trafficked are: •lied to about what a job involves •brought from another country (but people can also be trafficked within the UK) •forced to work •monitored very closely by whoever they work for Because people are trafficked to work for very little pay, or none at all, it’s sometimes called ‘modern day slavery’ or labour ‘exploitation’. Signs of human trafficking All trafficking cases are different, but there are common signs. A victim of trafficking might: •have a lack of freedom •work for very little or no pay •seem to be in debt to someone •live in fear of someone, or even the authorities •have signs of physical abuse, like cuts and bruises •move location regularly Children can be trafficked too. They will share many common signs with adult victims, but may stand out from other children because: •they have money or possessions that they can’t account for •they don’t seem to live with parents or guardians •they’re emotionally unstable, eg aggressive, withdrawn or anxious

Get advice If you want confidential advice about trafficking before calling the police, there are a number of specialist organisations you can talk to. You can contact: •The Salvation Army’s 24 hour confidential helpline for reporting modern slavery on 0300 3038 151 •The Modern Day Slavery Foundation’s helpline on 0800 0121 700, open 24 hours a day •the NSPCC’s helpline on 0808 8005 000 if you think a child is in danger of trafficking If you want to talk to someone face-toface, your local Citizens Advice can help you decide what to do next. What happens after you report trafficking The first thing the police will do is protect someone who has been trafficked from anyone that might harm them. The police and specialist organisations will work together to provide the victim with practical and emotional support. They’ll get medical care and help arranging accommodation in safe place, away from their traffickers. If it’s safe, they’ll be helped to return to their home country. If it’s not safe to return, perhaps because they might be trafficked again, they can apply for asylum in the UK

immigration problem. It’s important to get help early if you’re not sure what to do. You can get free, confidential help from your local Citizens Advice on: •visa eligibility and applications - including advice on filling in forms (although they might not be able to fill in the form for you) •chasing up Home Office delays •getting replacement immigration documents •problems with coming to the UK or staying in the UK, eg applications for entry clearance, leave to enter, leave to remain or residence permits •becoming a British citizen (also known as ‘naturalisation’) If your situation is more complicated If your situation is more complicated, you might need to pay for specialist advice from a professional immigration adviser or solicitor. For example, if you’re applying for your family to join you in the UK or you’re separating from your partner. You need to make sure that an immigration specialist is registered with OISC (Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner) before you ask for their advice.

Important All immigration specialists must be registered with OISC - if they’re not, they won’t have the best knowledge to advise you (and you’ll still have to pay).

hildren from Boston West Academy were in “The Potting Shed” at Central Park on Wednesday learning how to grow using less water in the garden. The event was held by Anglian Water and Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) to mark National Gardening Week (April 13 to 19) and the children joined The Potting Shed Club for a visit to the community garden. The Potting Shed Club - https:// bit.ly/1EIli6O - is an online resource in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society to help customers create beautiful and waterefficient gardens. The children enjoyed potting up seeds to take away and grow on and heard how they could encourage wildlife, such as birds, into their own gardens, and make their own compost. They heard how they could grow a water-saving garden in one of the driest areas of the country.

Children received hose guns and water-saving gardening kits which included a ground moisture indicator, a water mat to help keep plants watered for a week, water-storing granules to help reduce watering, a packet of lavender seeds, a guide to droughttolerant plants and a water-saving guide. Customers joining Anglian Water’s Potting Shed Club can get their hands on one of the water-saving garden packs. You can also join via Facebook @ thepottingshedclub get your watersaving kit and pick up ideas and tips from other gardeners.

E

very decision we make is based on Love, Fear or a combination of both. Do you work in the job that you do because you love it or because you fear what will happen if you didn’t work? Are you in a relationship because you love the other person or because the fear of being alone or without financial or emotional support is too great? The problem is the fear path will never lead you to a good place, even if it feels like the secure or more comforting thing to do. It will never really lead you to what you want because doing things out of fear is a representation of what other people want us to do, or ways in which they want us to behave. Rarely is it our own path. As parents, things we often hear are about how we are bringing up our babies and children. ‘You should give them a dummy’ or ‘you don’t want to give them a dummy because it will be hard to take away’, ‘are you still breastfeeding – no wonder they won’t sleep through the night’ or ‘you didn’t breastfeed for very long’, ‘if you pick them up every time they cry you’re making a rod for your own back’ or ‘letting them cry like that is bad for them’. It feels a bit like you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. The truth is this – they are giving you advice out of both love and fear – love for

you and fear that you will have the same rocky journey that they did. In their own way they are truly trying to help, but instead of dealing with their own issues they try to parent vicariously through you. Sadly, in a society where men and women aren’t always taught to have confidence in their own parenting skills, random advice from people you love prays on your fears that you aren’t doing a ‘good enough’ job; that the daily struggles, mental anguish, anxiety and all round battle you do with yourself everyday could be easier if you listen to someone else that probably knows better. There is some truth in this, but parenting is a right of passage. Parenthood is about the making of a mother or father as much as the making of a child. Learning to trust your own instincts and have confidence in raising secure, happy, well balanced children is something that you can only learn by trial and error yourself. Having people around you that share your viewpoint is helpful, but unless you have found your ‘village’ before you have your baby this is also something you build as you go along. This month, I encourage you to think about whether your decisions are grounded in Love or Fear. Be brave, take the road less travelled and choose Love.

The History of

Father's Day T

here are two stories of when the first Father’s Day was celebrated. According to some accounts, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state in America on June 19, 1910. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at church in 1909. She felt as though mothers were getting all the acclaim while fathers were equally deserving

Washington was deferred to the third Sunday in June. The other story of the first Father’s Day in America happened all the way on the other side of the country in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the local Methodist church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men. While Father’s Day was celebrated locally in several communities across the

While there may be many different dates dedicated to dads across the globe, one thing is for certain, they all celebrate the same thing, fantastic fathers. of a day of praise. Sonora’s dad was quite a man. William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He went on to raise the six children by himself on their small farm in Washington. To show her appreciation for all the hard work and love William gave to her and her siblings, Sonora thought there should be a day to pay homage to him and other dads like him. She initially suggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father’s death to be the designated day to celebrate Father’s Day, but due to some bad planning, the celebration in Spokane,

country, unofficial support to make the celebration a national holiday began almost immediately. William Jennings Bryant was one of its staunchest proponents. In 1924, President Calvin “Silent Cal” Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day become a national holiday. But no official action was taken. In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day. However, it wasn’t until 1972, during the Nixon administration, that Father’s Day was officially recognised as a national holiday in America

and quickly followed success here in the UK.

Why is the date of Father’s Day different in other countries? While countries including the UK, Ireland, US, France, Cyprus, South Africa, Netherlands, Greece, Japan, Canada and Saudi Arabia celebrate Father’s Day every June, others have the day on a completely different date in the year. Australia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand celebrate their dads in September. Many people believe that the celebration date is different in the southern hemisphere because June is their autumn, rather than their spring, and the day can be marketed better in the spring season. And in Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal and Croatia it’s in March. For Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Iceland, Father’s Day celebrations are held on the second Sunday of November - and in Bulgaria it’s on the same day as Boxing Day, December 26. The dates usually correspond to each country’s culture and traditions. While there may be many different dates dedicated to dads across the globe, one thing is for certain, they all celebrate the same thing –fantastic fathers. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 19

open! We are now

The Thatched Cottage Restaurant is now open! We have been working hard on a fabulous refurbishment of The Thatched Cottage which includes a big new bar as well as a sensational new extension that will be home to the main function room for big occasions.

T

he restaurant is housed within a beautiful cottage that has been restored sympathetically, keeping the original features, including the stunning thatched roof, intact. The interior décor is in keeping with the outward appearance of this quaint cottage and the black beams, columns, trusses and bracing contrast with the light green panelled walls to create an olde English feel.

What our customers say.... Thankyou for bringing it back to life! A birthday treat out today, food absolutely spot on.. soup I don’t eat but tried the broccoli & Stilton it was stunning, as was every course. Lovely to be able to revisit The Thatched after so long with its new look. Well done to The Chambers for bringing it back to life

Jaguar E-Pace D240 PROS ‘N’ CONS à Handsome à Economical à Comfortable à Kit à Pricey

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS

(2.0 D240 R-Dynamic S AWD Auto – as tested)

T

he E-Pace is diminutive when compared with the F-Pace, and it doesn’t look much like it. It has more in common with the Range Rover Evoque, because it uses the same chassis. There are other Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) models rolled into the mix, too. The new SUV’s headlights are reminiscent of the two-seater Jaguar F-Type, possibly hinting at the athletic potential of the E-Pace. There are two petrols and three diesels on offer. I drove the most potent diesel, the D240 twin-turbo. As the numbers in its name suggest, the SUV churns out 240PS, and it’s fitted with an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive only. There are a couple of model line-ups: regular and R-Dynamic; the latter of which gets twin tailpipes, front fog-lights and body-coloured door cladding. Then there are four trim levels within each range. I drove the ‘S’ trim in R-Dynamic form, which boasts fat alloys, navigation, electricallyadjustable front seats and leather upholstery. Behind the wheel, the E-Pace isn’t mindblowing, but it’s very good - as far as small SUVs go. The car’s steering weights up well at speed and the baby Jaguar feels planted, inspiring some confidence in corners. Zero to 62mph is achieved in 7.4 seconds and the top speed is 139mph. Unsurprisingly, I found myself enjoying lacing the E-Pace down Corsican roads; perhaps even more so than if I’d been at the tiller of a German-made machine. The jewel in the E-Pace’s crown is undoubtedly its ride quality. The car feels refined on every road surface, behaving better than an SUV has any entitlement to, even at a snail’s pace. Potholes are

soaked up so well that there are times when you wonder if the Jaguar has metamorphized into a hovercraft. The D240 produces just a smidgeon of diesel clatter on start-up, but it soon settles. Give it the beans with your right foot, though, and the oilburning musical score returns. To be fair, the car’s sound insulation masks this most of the time, to the point where you start to question which fuel type the Jaguar drinks. The E-Pace’s ZF nine-speed automatic ‘box changes smoothly, and on the R-Dynamic, gearshift paddles make things more fun. Rather than staying in ‘auto’ mode, you can dance through the cogs yourself using the shifters behind the steering wheel. The cabin is a lovely place to spend time. It’s even grin-inducing at times, with neat touches, like the ‘cub’ image in the windscreen frame helping to raise a smile. The general effect is elegant enough, with skilfully placed sections of leather and double stitching to remind you you’re in a quality motor. Only some hunks of dark plastic here and there rain on the parade. Room-wise, you’re laughing in an E-Pace. The car will sit four-up, no problem, and tall occupants in the back seat won’t have cause to moan about legroom or headroom. There’s plenty of that. The practical side of things continues to the Jaguar’s boot. At 577 litres, it offers more cargo capacity than most other small SUVs. And things become positively van-like with the rear seats

folded down. In place of human cargo, there’s 1,234 litres to knock yourself out with. JLR has every right to look like ‘the cat that got the cream’ with this fresh product. The E-Pace will be popular, no doubt about it. It has a nearflawless mix of comfort, practicality, power and refinement. Not every premium compact SUV can do that.
