Welcome to the February issue We made it….January is done! Always seen as a miserable month in the year, cold, damp days with very little light, as I am writing this it is grey, miserable and the rain is lashing at my window! It’s nice to be looking forward to Spring and what the year ahead has in store. As always, we are keen to promote supporting our local shops as they are key to our local economy. As the saying goes ‘use them or lose

your LOCAL COMM

contents

them’. After tidying up from Christmas it often makes us think of home improvements we can make. This month we look at the kitchen, how to add value if you are thinking of remodelling your cooking space. I know at home I am nagging at my husband on DIY jobs I think need doing, although so far it seems to be falling on deaf ears! February is the month of love, and of course we are talking about Valentines Day but don’t worry if you’re on your own, it’s just one day of the year and why not spend the evening with other single friends? Order a takeaway and relax whilst thinking how much money you’ve saved not having to buy a present! This month Tim is road testing the Range Rover Sport so make sure you flick to the back of the magazine to see what he thought when he put it through it’s paces. As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is roll on Spring and have a great month!

Boston Barrier work about to start There’s no grass growing under the feet of those tasked with building the Boston Barrier, which received final Government approval just before Christmas. The £100 million project - which will better protect more than 14,000 properties from tidal flooding - was given the green light by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), Michael Gove, and HM Treasury. On Monday, January 8, pontoons in the river along London Road will be moved across the river and moored on the Ports Quays, downriver of the Swing Bridge., It is expected the moorings will be offstation for approximately four weeks while the Port carries out maintenance dredging at the pontoon site on behalf of main contractor

Bam Nuttall / Mott McDonald (BMMJV). After completion of the dredging, the pontoons will be returned to their original position. From January 15 there significant amount of works have started in the Haven. Around 75 metres of scour protection piling works will commence at the Port of Boston’s starch berth situated between the grain loading silo and Dani Foods. All piling will take place from the shore, using a tracked crawler crane. The expectation is that the 19 metre-long piles will not swing out over the river but mariners have been advised to take extra caution when navigating in this area. Warning signs will be erected at either end of the works. Piling will take place during the hours of 7am to 7pm.

The tidal barrier will feature a moveable gate across the River Witham (also known locally as The Haven), together with a new control building to operate the barrier, new flood defence walls on both banks, and a replacement gate across the entrance to the existing Port of Boston wet dock. The Barrier will make Boston one of the best-protected areas from flooding outside of London. BMMJV Framework Director Allan Rogers said: “We are looking forward to delivering this innovative flood protection scheme. We have a proven track record of success having recently completed phase one of the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme.” Below is an artist’s impression of how the barrier will appear looking downstream.

Witham Way Battle Cry Answered Local man Peter Lucas along with his trusty dog Oscar has answered the call for volunteers to help maintain Witham way country park. He is often seen litter picking in the park and had this to say; “I have got to admit for the first few weeks it was more like going around with a skip, the rubbish was everywhere, I believe I have now broken the back of the rubbish and will try and keep on top of it. I use the park 4 to 5 times a day and really appreciate it as a lovely area and we should all be proud of it, it goes without

4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk 4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

saying, as with most things nowadays, it is the few that spoil it for the masses. But we can either walk around and moan or do something about it, I am more than willing to do the litter picking but it would be nice if anyone else could keep the brambles under control as these are litter collection points and I am unable to get the rubbish that is entangled within the brambles so if anyone could chop them back a bit that would be great but not remove them as they are a benefit to the wildlife.”

Police cadets help beat winter’s chill It’s cold outside, but thanks to Boston Police Cadets some families will now be able to keep themselves nice and warm. The cadets raided their own wardrobes and those of family members to donate warm winter clothing to the warm rail organised by Boston Stump. The rail of donated coats and winter clothes is available for anyone in need to help themselves during the colder months. The initiative was launched when it was noticed that more people were coming into the Stump to keep warm and children were spotted in town not dressed for winter weather. Senior Cadet Charlotte Amey said: “We all knew

we and others had coats and other clothing at home which never gets worn, but would still be serviceable. It seemed the right thing to do to bring it in for someone who could make good use of it.” Anyone who wants to donate winter clothing can leave it at Boston Stump. For those in need, the clothing rail is available at St Christopher’s Church Mondays, 10am-12pm, Tuesdays, 12-2pm, Wednesdays 1-3pm and Thursdays 12-2pm. The cadets have also been thinking of others by undertaking first aid training. They are pictured receiving their first aid certificates at Boston Police Station from Sgt Dave Robinson.

Win a Family Ticket to see Alice in Wonderland at New Theatre Royal in Lincoln The New Theatre Royal in Lincoln is proud to present it’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland from 30th March to 7th April. Alice is sitting with her sister outdoors when she spies a White Rabbit with a pocket watch. Fascinated by the sight, she follows the rabbit down the hole. She falls for a long time, and finds herself in a long hallway full of doors. There is also a key on the table, which unlocks a tiny door;

through this door, she spies a beautiful garden. She longs to get there, but the door is too small. Soon, she finds a drink with a note that asks her to drink it. We then follow her through her journey in Wonderland. Brimming with live music, stunning costumes and magical set design – you and your family could join alice and all her friends for free for an amazing adventure this easter by simply entering our competition.

T

.uk @simplyboston.co

here has been a Cabinet reshuffle. No, not that one in London. We’ve had one in Boston, and I am the new boy. My Cabinet responsibility is for the town centre, which fits well with my current chairmanship of BTAC – Boston Town Area Committee, which acts as a town council for Boston. I am also a member of the Prosperous Boston Task and Finish Group, which has been busy for the past two years taking evidence and looking at all aspects of the town centre and ways to improve it. My Cabinet portfolio includes town centre development and management, car parks, markets, events, the annual May Fair and the public toilets. My first focus will be the Market Place. Boston should be rightly proud of its traditional Market Place. It has been described as one of the best medieval market places in the country and retains the look and feel of a traditional open public space. It had a £2 million

Each month a different member of Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet writes about the issues which they have responsibility for. This month Cllr Nigel Welton talks about the future of the town’s iconic Market Place.

Nigels’s Notes

refurbishment in 2011/12. What many people may not realise is that the county council and not the borough council has control of the Market Place, although it is the borough council which organises the markets and the events. Car parking in the Market Place is also the responsibility of the county council. I’d like to see a new local arrangement in which the borough council has more control of its Market Place At a time when many traditional markets are struggling and reducing, Boston’s remains one of the biggest and best, a favourite with both traders and shoppers from near and far. There has also been a significant increase in use of the Market Place as a space for public entertainment. Working with Transported, the Boston arts organisation, we have increased use of the events area with, in the past months, everything from crafts and entertainment specifically for children through to family-focused events such as the popular farming day. And, of course,

the Market Place is the centre for the May Fair and the big Christmas event, packed as it was this festive season for the lights switch-on, the Illuminate parade and the Christmas market. We already have a growing list of events for this coming spring and summer. But we are far from complacent and are constantly looking for new ways to make better use of this marvellous space. Currently we are seeking views from traders and the public about how the market could be better. There is an important link between the Wednesday and Saturday market businesses and the wide-ranging businesses which operate permanently seven days a week. There are still a few days left for businesses are invited to make their views known using this link to a survey http://bit.ly/2jOJpTz The views of residents are equally as important and they too are invited to make their views know using this link to a survey http://bit.ly/2AY1y5H Hard copies of all the surveys are available from Boston Borough Council’s reception at the offices in West Street. Car parking is an essential ingredient in any vibrant town centre mix and I will also be taking an early look at this. Watch this space.

Cllr Nigel Welton,

Cabinet member for the town centre, Boston Borough Council

Advice

Dealing with Post Christmas Debt by Emily Orme – Money Advisor Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire

Analysis by the national charity shows that across the country, demand for money and debt advice is highest in January and February, with one person contacting their nearest Citizens Advice for help every 11 seconds and people visiting the Citizens Advice website every 3 seconds in January. While January is often associated with squeezed budgets and debt worries, Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire is also expecting people to contact them with money queries as people take stock of their money situation and plan their finances long-term. Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire anticipates

that the most common questions around managing debt will cover credit cards, utilities and unsecured loans. To help people get started, Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire is sharing its eight top tips to help people get their finances in order during the start of the year. Stuart Hellon Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire said: “January is a great time to take stock of your finances and think about your priorities for the future, not just for the next month but for the next year and beyond.

“Although many people will be focusing on their next paycheck after the busy Christmas period, people can also use the time to review whether they can save money on their bills or set a savings goal. “Whether you’re looking to deal with debts, cut your costs or budget better, Citizens Advice can help you review your overall money situation so you can make decisions that improve your financial security.” For information and advice, contact Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire Money Advice line on 01529 414086.

Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire’s top tips for getting your finances in order Do a simple budget Write down your income and take away your essential bills such as gas and electric, food and transport. If you have money left over, plan in advance what else you’ll spend or save. If you don’t, look at ways to cut your costs. Use our online tool to set a more detailed budget . Save money on essentials You could save an average of £300 on your energy bill by changing tariffs or suppliers. Use Citizens Advice’s energy comparison tool to see if you can save. Diarise the dates of annual contracts that are up for renewal, like your mobile phone or car insurance, and use a comparison site to see if you can get a cheaper deal.

Check you’re claiming the right benefits If you have a family or are married, check if you can apply for working tax credits or marriage tax allowance on gov.co.uk If you live alone, you may be entitled to a discount on your council tax bill. If you claim benefits, visit the Citizens Advice website to check if you are eligible for discounts on your water or energy bills. Start saving Start saving if you can - it doesn’t matter if it’s 50p or £5 a week, every penny will help improve your finances. Saving is an important part of everyday finances, giving you a buffer for emergencies, helping you buy bigger items and giving you more financial security for the future.

Keep tabs on your overdraft Sign up to free text alerts from your bank so you know when you’re close to going into your overdraft. Then make adjustments to your spending if you can. Be choosey about your borrowing If you need to borrow money, it’s important to know that there are different offers with credit cards and loans, from free balance transfers to paying no interest for the first few months. Get your debts in order If you can’t pay all your debts at once, it’s important to prioritise. Rent or mortgage and council tax are more important than credit card debts for example, as the consequences can be more serious if you don’t

pay. Find out how to prioritise on the Citizens Advice website or contact your nearest service for help. Invest in your future Pensions are a great way to save for the future and are also good value, as your contributions are topped up your employer and the government. If you’re eligible for autoenrolment, consider paying more than just the minimum. Those who are self-employed can still set up their own pension but make sure it’s with a regulated company. If you’re over 50 and have a defined contribution pension you can get free a Pension Wise appointment to learn more about taking your pension.

rimary School’s unique Bank and Shop system – Learn and Earn the BBC has visited the school to record the ground breaking work that is taking place. Every child at Kirton Primary School, from Y1 to Y6, has a bank account at the school. The children have the opportunity to earn ‘money’ (the school has its own currency designed by the children) by achieving well academically, representing the school or completing tasks such as attending councillor meetings. The school also has its own shop, full of exciting and often unique merchandise, where the children can spend their hard-earned money. The shop and bank are run entirely by a team of children – who also earn money for the jobs they do. The school has had much national

acclaim, including Finance Teacher of the Year, Primary Teacher of the Year, a Pearson teaching Award, a Community Education Award, short listing for a TES Award and a Renaissance Award. The date for the article to air has not yet been released, so keep your eyes peeled!

Boston College

O

fsted has recognised Boston College’s high standards of provision, performance and quality of teaching during their recent inspection. The inspection team confirmed the College’s “Good” status, making it one of the best performing providers of education in the area. The report concluded that the College has built upon previous inspection performance with aspects of provision described as “life-changing”. There was excellent feedback regarding the College’s Apprenticeship provision, with Ofsted stating “A substantially higher proportion of Apprentices achieve their qualifications than in other providers.” Ofsted praised the College’s strong links with local employers which ensure that students have access to high quality work experience placements and real world projects, whatever their field of study. Inspectors also praised the staff, saying that they “Prepare learners extremely well for the workplace”, adding that “The focus on competition work helps learners and apprentices to aspire to be excellent rather than merely competent.” The inspection results were backed up by the College’s continued success of students progressing into employment and on to higher levels of study. The inspectors made particular

reference to the high quality careers service, saying, “learners have access to high quality careers, information, advice and guidance.” Principal and CEO, Jo Maher confirmed “The College is in a strong position looking to the future, with ambitious plans for the further development of its high quality qualifications, including ‘A’ levels and technical education. Investment is planned for new facilities with a particular focus on STEM, University level courses and Apprenticeships which will allow us to continue to build on this excellent result.” Fiona Grady, Vice Principal of Curriculum and Quality says “We are delighted that Ofsted inspectors recognise that not only have we maintained our status as a “Good” college, but have continued to strive for excellence. Inspectors noted that we have extremely high expectations of our staff and we know that their dedication, professionalism and caring attitudes are the reasons students enjoy

Boston College and achieve their goals.” There has never been a better time to join Boston College with the next Open Event on February 8th. Valentines

Feel the Love St Valentine’s Day – the celebration of love and affection - has

been marked on February 14 for centuries in one form or another

T

oday it’s a multi-million pound, global business with millions of cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts exchanged between couples, admirers, family and friends, in countries all over the world. . In celebrating love and romance we send 25 million cards and spend a massive £1.3bn on gifts in the UK alone! But what stands it out as the most romantic of the year? One myth associated with St Valentine is that he was

imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry, and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer and legend has it, that before his execution wrote ‘from your Valentine’ as a farewell to her. Others claim the celebration stems from the Roman’s religious Lupercalia festival, held in mid-February to avert

If you’re looking to avoid the cliche of roses, chocolates and cards, you could always choose an alternative way to mark it , like one of the following ¤ In the original selfless spirit of the Valentine’s story, why not do some charity or community work - this will cost nothing and leave you glowing with the feel-good factor. ¤ Donate the money you would’ve spent on overpriced roses and chocolates, to a charity dear to your loved one’s heart, in their name

¤ Plant or donate a rose bush to a school, public garden or old people’s home to spread some Valentine’s cheer. ¤ Or why not return to the original practices and write your betrothed a love letter and have it delivered? Chocolates are soon eaten, while flowers die but an old-fashioned declaration of love will last forever.

evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility. Its association with romantic love grew during the middle ages, when Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the poem Parlement of Foules, to honour the first anniversary of the engagement of Richard II to Anne of Bohemia. Moving forward The Young Man’s Valentine Writer was issued by a British publisher in 1797; it contained numerous sentimental verses for the young

man unable to compose his own. By this time printers had already begun producing a small number of cards with verses, while a reduction in postal rates in the following century made it easier to mail cards too, and in turn made it possible to exchange them anonymously. In the 19th century paper Valentines became so popular, they were assembled in factories, while fancier versions were made with real lace and ribbons.

Fun facts about Valentine’s Day ¤ Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day in the late 1800s ¤ In medieval times, girls ate bizarre foods on Valentine’s Day to make them dream of their future husband.

¤ The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife. ¤ About 3 percent of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their cats and dogs.

Support Your Town Our town has many independent shops and services for us to use but sadly these are fading as the sayong goes, use them, or lose them’. Why Shop Local! Local shops sell a wide range of great products at affordable prices. Many people get out of the habit of shopping locally and are then are surprised by the range of products and gifts available. Shopping locally saves you money. Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us all that sole traders = expensive, but the evidence just isn’t there to back this up. If you add in travel, parking costs and fees to transport larger items home, the overall cost is often much greater. Shopping locally retains our communities. People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns and villages but don’t equate this to how they spend their money. Shops will only survive if customers spend locally - so if you want a vibrant selection locally where people can socialise as well as shop, we need to encourage people to shop locally. Shopping locally creates jobs. Shops in our town centres and villages create

local employment and self employment. These people in turn spend in the local economy. Evidence shows that for every £10 spent in an independent shop, £25 is generated for the local economy compared to £14 spent in multinationals. Local shops value you more. Evidence from numerous surveys shows people receive better customer care and service in local shops. Traders survive by their reputation and repeat business - so shopping locally means that you get a higher standard of service. Shopping locally saves services. Private, voluntary and public sector services cluster around shops. The loss of the high

street often corresponds to a reduction in these services. As shops disappear, so do hairdressers, vets, dentists etc.

Lorraine Christine Planning a wedding takes so much thought these days, but attire remains top of many bride-to-be’s priorities. As, such the bridal shops in Kirton are essential places to check out early well before the big day comes. Okay, so choosing the bridal gown is a big decision, but that is not all that you need to think about ahead of the big day. What about the rest of your attire? Shoes, underwear and

jewellery all need to be considered and it is hard to make progress here without having a decision made on the dress itself. That is why the bridal shop in Kirton is a good places to visit. Of course, you will get an idea of the dresses that are stocked, but you can also obtain invaluable advice about the rest of your garments from friendly staff who have a wealth of experience to draw upon.

Health & Beauty

The Power of Positivity Positive thinking can be defined as an optimistic or bright, mental and emotional approach to life. A positive person is more likely to anticipate happiness, health and success, and believe they can overcome obstacles or difficulties in their life. Some say, we are as happy as we choose to be. Whilst many believe adopting a positive mindset is not always an easy choice, it is really one of the most important things you can do to improve your life.

I

t is important to become aware of how our thoughts, feelings, perceptions and desires have a direct impact on our real life outcomes. You may notice how your thoughts effect your decisions, reactions and responses to what is happening in your life and continue to shape your future. It is therefore important to pay close attention to these and how you can best contribute to creating a positive mindset to shape your future.

5 Steps to Positive Thinking: 1. Tell yourself you can change: Believe that you are in control of your thoughts therefore have the power to change your life. Understand the relationship between change and personal growth. Inspire yourself to want to change by reading positive quotes and affirmations. 2. Stop comparing: Search for happiness within, rather than analysing what is going on around you. Ignore what other people say or think about you. Stop worrying what others are up to, or questioning the successes in their lives. We are all living our own journeys. Focus on yourself first, and once you find happiness you naturally won’t worry about what’s going on the outside. 3. Refuel and re-energize: Whilst being tired can lead to physical exhaustion, it can also cause mental fatigue and drain the energy you need to control your thoughts and

think positively. High stress levels and lack of nutrients can effect your nervous system and cloud your judgment. You have the ability to think clearer when you are rested so notice when you need a break, or take part in activities that relax and re-energize you. 4. Identify both the positive and negative: Be aware of your negative thoughts, but know that you have the ability to choose positive thoughts. Be aware of why particular thoughts may exist, and your intention and desire to change them. Understand the

Essential Oils: Peppermint Peppermint is cultivated in Europe, Asia and North America due to it needing lots of rainfall. It is a hugely versatile oil in that it can be ingested, inhaled and applied to various areas of the body - peppermint foot lotion is perhaps the most well known application of this oil. Did you know it’s also amazing at helping get rid of headaches? Apply to the temples, above the ears and the back of the neck.

Also by adding one drop to your drinking water you’ll add great flavour and enhance the health benefits of your drink. If you want to find out more about the powerful benefits and ways to use essential oils then visit www.essential-oils.guru. Information is shared for educational purposes only. benefits of choosing positive thoughts over negative thoughts. 5. Seek Support: Seek support from people around you who are likely to influence and guide you positively. You may choose to reach out to friends, family or a professional. You’ll be surprised at the amount of help that is around you if you ask for it. (Macdonald, Katie 2014) Taking steps to identify and control your thought patterns can provide you with the tools and foundation you need to transform your life.

Tastes so good... Steak and Sweet Potato Chips February is the month of love. And a beautifully cooked steak is a wonderful way to have a romantic meal a deux, simply and easily. It’s not that hard to dish up a fabulous supper that is sure to please if you follow the simple instructions.

n e h c Kit Makeover

Home & Property

No matter the state of the housing market, kitchen remodelling remains a good idea. The modernisation of a kitchen will certainly add value to your home and almost every buyer will be attracted to a kitchen that’s updated and move-in ready. Even if you’re planning on staying in your home for a while, few things can reinvigorate your home like a brand new kitchen.

K

itchens are the hardest-working rooms in most homes, and the wear and tear that comes with years of use can leave them looking drab. A remodelling project that makes over your kitchen from floor to ceiling can do more than just improve the aesthetics - it can also be a great way to adapt the room for better functionality to the changing needs of your family. If you’ve put off dreams of a new kitchen because you think it’s unaffordable, you might want to reconsider the changes you can make with your own two hands (and maybe those of some family and friends). When you have the right tools on hand, do-ityourself kitchen projects are more accessible than you might think. By visiting a nearby DIY store to pick up the necessary tools, you can see twice the savings - in addition to the DIY cost savings, you’ll avoid the expenses associated with buying the tools outright. Here are some essential parts of the project and the tools you’ll need to get going:

24 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Floors: There are lots of stylish and functional options for flooring, but the type of saw you’ll need for cutting things down to size will depend on what material you choose. For tile, you’ll need a wet saw, but a cut-off saw for wood and laminate. A table saw can also be helpful for wood flooring. Cabinets: Now more than ever before, homeowners have great options for easy-toinstall cabinetry that don’t require a team of professionals. Make sure that you’ve got the right drill, drill bits, nails, screws, anchors, levels and supports on hand before you get started - that way you’ll be able to work without interruption. Worktops: Again, the tools you need will vary, depending on what material you’re using. If you need to cut a material like laminate to size, a jigsaw will be a convenient tool. Sanders and drills are two more items you’ll want to have nearby. Walls: Whether you’re hanging drywall or simply painting, a ladder will be an essential

tool. If your kitchen has particularly high ceilings or hard-to-reach spots, renting a ladder to fit the task is a good idea.

Appliances: Don’t forget that appliances are sometimes the finishing touches to your kitchen. Think about built in large appliances to create a uniform look and also the image of more space. Small appliances should co-ordinate and try to limit how many you have on display as to not clutter your workspace. A beautiful kitchen will quickly become a focal point in your home, both for your family and for potential buyers. By taking the project into your own hands, you can save a significant amount of money, giving you even better return on your investment. That said, if you are anything like my husband and I, DIY is not our strong point and therefore we tend to use the rule ‘We are saving ourselves time, money and stress by getting the professionals in’. Not only will a professional company be able to advise you on the best gadgets and options for your budget they will be able to draw plans for you so you know exactly what you will be getting for your money. It is always recommended to approach several companies when undertaking any project for advice and quotes to ensure you get exactly what you are looking for as this will possibly be one of the biggest expenditures you make for the home.

Range Rover Sport PROS ‘N’ CONS à Powerful à Spacious à Comfortable à Composed à Expensive

FAST FACTS (HSE Dynamic)

N

ow, here’s a question that you might not know the answer to but will almost certainly have an opinion on. Is the Range Rover Sport one of the most influential cars of the modern era? A decade or so ago it seemed like all the celebrities were arriving to events in a Range Rover Sport, and since then the SUV market has exploded. Now nearly everybody wants one. Furthermore, almost every manufacturer is now making them. The Sport is not really a full-blown Range Rover. It’s cheaper for a start, and comes with five seats, but it does offer the option of seven. That said, the additional chairs are tiny and aren’t appropriate for fitting kids’ car seats. This is a lower, smaller ‘Rangie’, designed to appeal to a slightly less affluent, but still successful, crowd. And the focus has moved from out-and-out luxury to one that is more about power and pure on-road use. Of course, it’s a Range Rover, so it is well equipped, and the interior is of a high quality. The Windsor leather seats are impeccable - but the Sport is quite different to the full ‘Range Rover’. There are three diesels, two petrols, and even a new hybrid powertrain to

choose from - and all are tuned primarily for clout. Only the entry level TDV6 feels a little lacking, but equally I couldn’t recommend the powerful eight-cylinder petrol engine on offer - unless you own a small oil producing nation. This will really eat away at your cash reserves. Being designed for on-road action, rather than the full-blown Range Rover’s off-road capability, the Sport comes with optional air suspension. This keeps it comfortable and composed, even when cornering hard. The issue with driving it fast is more the size than the capability of the car. Britain’s most enjoyable roads are just a bit too small to be throwing a two-tonne SUV around, however good it might be. The Range Rover Sport is a status symbol, a luxury cruiser, and an enjoyable car to drive hard. But it’s expensive to buy and run - especially with its more commanding engines. And it’s not certain that the new hybrid unit can deliver on the claimed figures. Nevertheless, those who want one won’t be put off by such trivial matters.
