Welcome to the December issue I may come across smug and to be honest I am….I am pretty organised for Christmas this year. Normally I am a panic buyer in the last week and wrapping on Christmas Eve but hopefully this year I will be able to sit back and enjoy the festivities. We are planning a quiet family Christmas, so I thinking a PJ day with lots of food and films in front of a fire – bliss! In the issue Annette from The Village Midwives shares with us the importance of energy conservation in labour and Tim test drives the Volvo V60. If you’re hosting a party over the festive period make sure you check out our guide to party food, as time creeps up the panic for an outstanding party builds up! How often do you visit Skegness, as it is on our doorstep? But do you know the history of the seaside town? All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and wish you a very Merry Christmas!

News Kirton – simply the best Kirton is the best kept large village in Lincolnshire… and that’s official. It was outright winner in the category for communities with a population of 2,501 to 7,000 in the competition organised by the Campaign to Protect Rural England. This year’s entry was the highest ever in its 56-year history, with 111 towns and villages vying for the top titles. A panel of judges visited Kirton to assess it against criteria which included overall appearance and condition, green spaces, public, private and business premises, religious buildings and memorials and overall community effort. Chairman of CPRE Lincolnshire, Tim Machin, said “Standards this year

were very high and winners have been validated against their largestever number of competitors. We are delighted to announce this year’s worthy winners and it is great to see so many communities taking such pride in where they live.” Kirton Parish Council Chairman, Cllr David Danby, said: “Thanks go to all of our contractors - the contractor who watered the tubs all dry summer long, the contractors who planted the tubs and baskets around the village, the grass contractors - the residents and businesses who have put on fine displays, the village caretaker who keeps the village litter free and the Friday Group who tidy up everywhere they go.”

Healthwatch talks about … Delays in test results for Cervical Screening Healthwatch Lincolnshire is aware that rates for cervical screening (smears) nationally are reported to be the lowest for 20 years. We have also been made aware by Lincolnshire patients that they are experiencing delays in results when they do go for screening causing anxiety and stress. We asked NHS England what was happening in Lincolnshire and whether the delays could cause harm to our patients. NHSE said, “NHS England acknowledges that the time women are currently waiting for cervical screening results in Lincolnshire is not acceptable and we apologise to women who are suffering delays in receiving their results. Difficult though it is, women and their clinicians are asked to be patient in the knowledge that the service is working through the samples as fast as it can, the current backlog has started to be reduced and will continue to do so. With regards to potential clinical risk associated with delays; the aim of screening is to detect and treat precancerous changes, it is not a test for

4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk 4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

cervical cancer. The length of time for abnormal cells to become cancerous is reflected in the relatively long screening intervals of 3 and 5 years depending on age.” Whilst this provides some reassurance that delays are improving and the risk of harm is managed, this can only be improved by women being more aware of the risks and going to their scheduled appointments for screening, prevention being the better option for our residents. All health screening is essential to ensuring any changes to our body are picked up early, cervical screening alongside breast screening is certainly among one of the most important that all women should commit too. Early detection of changes can often be a life saver, so Healthwatch Lincolnshire urges all women to attend every offer to be screened they receive. If you have any experiences you wish to share with us about screening or any other health or social care service please do not hesitate to call us 01205 820892 or email us at info@ healthwatchlincolnshire.co.uk.

Nominate premises which make you proud Nominations are invited for the Pride of Boston Award - premises in Boston which are an asset to the town. Boston Preservation Trust’s Civic Group has already been out looking at premises which show a high level of presentation. Each month one or more premises are nominated and a certificate is presented. Early in 2019 all nominees will be invited to The Pride of Boston Award ceremony at Fydell House and the overall winner for 2018 will be announced. Dudley Bryant, chairman of The Civic Group, said: “We are all very proud of our heritage, and understand that a warm, inviting and friendly environment in our town centre is vital to the future economic success of Boston, and all its varied businesses. “One of the key elements to this is the improvement and regular maintenance of our buildings which give a first impression to business customers, whether they be

local or visitors to the town.” Last year’s worthy winner was Pen Street – all of it. Gill Burns, of Cherry Tree Shoes in Pen Street, said: “We are all independent traders and take pride in our businesses. Kerb appeal is important and it’s good to know that has been recognised. We are a little bit on the edge of the town centre, but customers who find us are pleasantly surprised. We have a real business community here and customers find it’s worth the effort coming here.” If you know of any premises in Boston which are an asset to the town please let the Civic Group know by e-mailing your nomination to info@fydellhouse.org

Shortlisted for top award Boston Borough Council has been shortlisted in the LGC Awards 2019. The council’s submission in the environmental services category, entitled Boston’s Big Clean Up, has been considered by judges who said they had a difficult job scoring the entries and commended the high quality of entries this year. In the shortlist announcement to the council they said: “To be shortlisted is a fantastic achievement.” The entry detailed all the council’s activities to combat the scourges of litter

and fly tipping including such initiatives as the activities of 3GS, action in the courts against littering fine dodgers, attempts to reduce contamination in the recycling collection, Operation Fly Swat and the annual Big Boston Clean Up. A team of three from the council now have to go before a panel of judges who will make the final overall winner decision to be announced in March. @LGCAwards #LGCAwards

Boston Community Transport receives Dementia Friendly Town Award Boston Community Transport are very proud to announce that we are the most recent local organisation to be formally recognised for our efforts towards becoming Dementia Friendly. Many of our member customers are elderly and require some assistance. Our drivers have attended a Dementia Friends awareness session to help increase their understanding of dementia and be able to better support their customers. They also wear their badges with pride. Angela Gould, Office Manager said ‘We are extremely honored to receive this award, many of our member customers are elderly and need extra assistance. To be recognised for our efforts to make people’s lives easier is very humbling’. It is estimated that there are currently 850,000 people in the United Kingdom living with dementia and this is likely to rise to one million by 2025. Many people living with dementia face the condition alone and are excluded from society. By using Boston Community Transport’s essential transport

alternative service we can assist many people to get back into society and help them to live as independently as possible for as long as possible. “Our drivers will not only pick our customers up at their homes and return them home safely, but will wait with them at no extra charge, attend appointments if required and assist in any way they can”. said Angela. For more information on our charges and how to join our essential scheme please call: 01205 360183, email us on office@bostonct.org.uk or take a look at our website www.bostonct.org.uk

The usual rules of sitting still and being

quiet don’t apply. This performance will also feature both signed interpretation and audio descriptive narration; with the addition of pre-show character familiarisation (by prior arrangement) too.

A

s thoughts turn to Christmas and the end of another year looms I have looked back at some of the main events of 2018. At the time of writing 2018 still has a little while to run, but it is surprising at how much to date has been achieved; in fact too much for me to detail it all here, so these are our headlines. The year kicked off with the council’s continued efforts to improve conditions for people living in rented accommodation. The council was among the first to take on new responsibilities for issuing its own penalties to owners of unfit private rented accommodation that previously had to go through the courts. Also in January the Cabinet approved £100,000 worth of outdoor leisure improvements at play areas across the town. Before the month was out a start had been made on the £1 million Boston Barrier scheme – the biggest flood alleviation project in Europe. And we heard that our bid for Government cash to help build new homes had been successful with a £3.5 million award. February blew out with disruption to refuse collections caused by the Beast from the East with unusually low temperatures and snowfall. Despite appalling conditions our bin men battled through to get all collections back to normal early in March. Refuse was again making headlines in March when the borough council was at the head of a campaign to keep battery “bombs” out of the rubbish collections. Batteries in Boston’s recycled collection were believed to have been responsible for three fires. Residents were asked not to put batteries or any electrical items in any of their waste collections – a campaign taken up later in the year across the county. April and we backed the Boston Standard petition campaign to try to get a share of new roads cash from Government to speed up the distributor road scheme for Boston.

Councillor’s

Column Each month a different member of Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet writes about the issues which they have responsibility for. This month Cllr Michael Cooper, Leader of Boston Borough Council talks about 2018 and the headlines over the last 12 months.

I joined volunteers to help with the 11th annual Big Boston Clean-up. I was heartened by the enthusiasm of all those who turned out, but saddened by the volume of litter still being dropped in our streets. The Boston Marathon – the flattest marathon on Earth – was another huge success with record numbers taking part. Boston’s “special relationship” with its twin, Laval, in France, was marked in its 60th anniversary year. New play facilities for children with disabilities were unveiled in Central Park in May. And the dredger Gypsey Race arrived in The Haven to begin work on the river bed in connection with the Boston Barrier construction. In June the courts caught up with a clutch of fine dodgers who had not paid up after being caught littering by the council’s enforcement officers. They ended up paying more than £500 for trying to dodge a £75 fine for littering. In July around 1,750 people attended when the Vikings set up camp in Central Park for a historical re-enactment weekend. A borough council employee saved five kittens he found dumped in a litter bin. Homes were found for all of them. The fun continued in July and August with free beach days at Central Park and the popular Get Cycling Roadshow returned to the Market Place. Pilgrim Hospital chiefs faced a three-hour grilling from councillors and the public at a meeting called by the council to discuss proposals to reduce some health services. The MP handed the residents’ petition to the Transport Minister, making the case for Boston to have a share of new road-building cash. New artwork was unveiled on the side of a council vehicle to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. The silhouette of a Tommy with bowed head by a barbedwire barricade amid a shower of poppies was

suggested by the Boston branch of the Royal British Legion. The council’s events team scored another success when an outdoor screening in Central Park of The Greatest Showman was a sell-out. An announcement from music store giant HMV that it was returning to Boston was greeted with enthusiasm. An initiative to inspire students to consider a career in engineering was launched by the council with a special inventing day at MetsaWood. September was rounded off with Boston receiving its fourth gold in-bloom award plus four more top environment awards. October and new litter bins were being installed in the town centre. The 90 new bins costing £22,410 are especially adapted to deal with cigarette litter. I officially declared open the new food service station at Sutterton roundabout – Greggs, Burger King and Subway. And with more to come it’s an upgrade to services for residents and visitors on the move. Local Democracy Week was a great success with younger residents coming to the council offices to find out how things operate. The centenary of the end of the First World War was marked with a rededication of the First World War Centenary Memorial in Boston’s Memorial Gardens – part of the Remembrance Day service. The council’s environmental services and efforts to keep Boston clean and tidy were shortlisted for a national award – finger crossed for the overall winner announcement early in 2019. Season’s greetings to all borough residents.

Cllr Michael Cooper, Leader, Boston Borough Council

Advice

Citizens Advice

With christmas fast approaching we are able to give you some useful information on some of your consumer rights. Return faulty goods If something’s gone wrong with an item you’ve bought, you may be entitled to a refund, repair or replacement. It doesn’t matter whether you bought the item new or secondhand you’ll still have rights. You’ll have legal rights if the item you bought is: • broken or damaged (‘not of satisfactory quality’) • unusable (‘not fit for purpose’) • not what was advertised or doesn’t match the seller’s description You won’t have any legal rights if: • it was damaged by wear and tear, an accident or misuse • you knew about the fault before you bought the item • you’ve just changed your mind Warranties and guarantees add to your legal rights. Each one is different, but they tend to be useful if: • something’s gone wrong after the first 6 months and you want a repair or replacement - it’s tricky to do this as you may have to prove you didn’t cause the problem • you bought an item abroad and the manufacturer is based in the UK • a trader’s gone out of business and there’s a problem with the goods or service they provided It may be easier to get your money back, a repair or replacement without using your warranty or guarantee. Find out if it’s easier to use your

legal rights on faulty goods instead. It’s usually easier within the first 6 months. You have legal rights for up to 6 years if there’s a fault. You may want to use your warranty or guarantee if you think it’ll be easier - for example, if you bought the item 7 months ago and your guarantee lasts for a year. Check your paperwork to find out how you make a claim. The warranty or guarantee could be on your receipt, in an email or given to you as a separate leaflet. The paperwork will also say: • how long the warranty or guarantee lasts for • what you’re entitled to, eg a refund, repair or replacement If you can’t find the guarantee or warranty, contact the seller or trader and ask if they have a copy or the manufacturer’s contact details. When you make a claim, you’ll usually need: • proof of purchase - usually a receipt showing where and when you bought the goods • details of what the problem is • a photocopy of the warranty or guarantee If something you ordered hasn’t arrived If something you’ve ordered hasn’t arrived, you should contact the seller to find out where it is. It’s the seller’s legal responsibility

...give free, confidential, impartial and independ ent advice to help you solve your problems

to make sure the item is delivered to you. They should chase the delivery company and let you know what’s happened to your item. If your item wasn’t delivered to the location you agreed (eg it was left with your neighbour without your consent), it’s the seller’s legal responsibility to sort out the issue. If the item doesn’t turn up, you’re legally entitled to a replacement or refund. You can write to the seller and ask them to deliver the item again. You should do this if the item wasn’t delivered within a reasonable time or the item wasn’t delivered by an agreed date. “Failure to deliver within a reasonable time and outside of the agreed deadline is considered to be a breach of contract. I am now making time of the essence and request the item be delivered within 14 days of receipt of this letter.” You can ask for your money back if you don’t receive the item either: • within 30 days of buying it • on the date you agreed with the seller - if it was essential to receive it by then (eg for an event then or shortly after) If the seller refuses to give you your money back, you should put your complaint in writing - follow their complaints procedure if they have one. If that doesn’t work you could:

• contact their trade association - look on their website for this information, or contact them to ask • use an alternative dispute resolution scheme - it’s a way of solving disagreements without going to court, where a third party will mediate to try and reach a solution If you paid by debit card Contact your bank and say you want to use the ‘chargeback scheme’. If you paid by credit card If the item cost less than £100, you should contact your credit card company and say you want to use the ‘chargeback scheme’. If the item cost more than £100 but less than £30,000, contact your credit card company and say that you want to make a ‘section 75’ claim to get your money back. If you paid using PayPal Use PayPal’s online resolution centre to report your dispute. You must do so within 180 days of paying.

Contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 if you need more help - a trained adviser can give you advice over the phone.

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school?

Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Kirton Primary School Kirton Primary School is celebrating after achieving the status of ‘Centre of Excellence’ in financial education. This school has been awarded this national status as an acknowledgement that it has embraced financial education, embedding it within its centre and disseminating it in the local community. The award recognises

that the school gives its pupils the knowledge, skills and confidence to be able to make informed and independent financial decisions.

Butterwick Primary School Over the past year, our staff and pupils have been working with the AntiBullying Alliance in a commitment to try to minimise and prevent bullying as much as we possibly can and also to improve the wellbeing of our pupils. We completed a case study, introduced a number of strategies and ideas that both staff and pupils have suggested and delivered them with the aim of improving behaviour in our school and the wider community. As a result of this, our school has been awarded ‘gold’ status for our work in trying prevent, minimise and stop bullying in school. As this is a national award, this is a

fantastic achievement and recognises the time and effort that staff and pupils have put into gaining this award. Well done to all involved. Anti-bullying week is 12th – 16th November and this year’s theme is ‘Choose Respect’. The school will be holding assemblies and lessons around this theme and the Mini Police will also be involved in activities during the week. We have taken part in Odd Socks Day on Monday

12th November, which gave children the opportunity to express themselves and celebrate their individuality. The school recently had an article published in a national newspaper about our efforts to prevent and minimise bullying at the school. Pictured are the Mini Police, Mr Huck (Teacher & Safeguarding Officer) and Alex Devenish (PCSO) with the Anti Bullying Alliance gold award certificate.

MiniPolice

T

he last few weeks have been an absolute whirlwind for Mini Police across Boston since the schools returned from September. On 2nd September there were 23 Mini Police in two schools, having carried on from our pilot phase last year. There are now 130 Mini Police spread across 14 schools in the Borough of Boston, from Swineshead and Sutterton through to Old Leake and Wrangle. The children from Years 5 and 6 (ages 9-11) were visited in September and given a briefing on the Mini Police project by the PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) who will be leading the project in their school. The children were reminded about the aims of the project and expected standards of behaviour, and those who wanted to take part were given a week to go away and think about the skills and attributes they held as individuals, and what qualities they thought they would be able to bring to the Mini Police project. A week later, our PCSOs returned to school, speeches were read and votes were cast. We were in awe at some of the great stories and pledges read out by candidates. There were some really close calls, with so many children wanting to take part, and having prepared their speeches in their own time. This in itself is an amazing achievement, as 107 children who had bravely stood before their peers and read out their election speeches were democratically voted to take up the role. There were quite a few nerves, the odd tear and plenty of smiles as the results were read out. Well done to all of the children who stood up and read their speeches – they were all absolutely fantastic! If only we could elect them all…. On Saturday 13th October, Lincolnshire Police Community Cohesion Team and Boston Borough Council hosted a ‘Blue Light Event’ in Central Park,

Boston. A host of agencies were invited along, including HM Coastguard, LIVES, Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, St Johns Ambulance, Lowland Search & Rescue and Lincolnshire fire & Rescue. As part of the day, the challenge was set to our freshly elected Mini Police – Come along, explore the range of equipment and activities on display, take part in a ‘Mini Marathon’ fun-run and raise some money for charity. The response was overwhelming, and despite it being a very dull and windy day, over 50 of our new recruits arrived to take part. A sea of hi-viz yellow jackets took off at a rapid pace around the perimeter of Central Park shortly after midday, with all entrants completing the run. All of the Mini Police were presented with medals sponsored by Boston Borough Council’s Boston town Area Committee (BTAC), and trophies were presented to the first three runners home. At the time of writing this article, the last few sponsor forms are being collected, but already the total raised is over £1600.00 which will be shared between local charities. A tremendous WELL DONE and THANKYOU to all those who took part, brought children along and sponsored them. On Friday 19th October, Mini Police from the Pioneers Free School Academy were invited by Boston Borough Council to take part in Democracy Week. Our recruits were accompanied by PCSO Kosiba and VPCSO Baker to the event where they took part in several activities and were able to explain the Mini Police project to visitors and guests including MP Matt Warman, Councillor Michael Cooper and Chief Executive Phil Drury. Merry Christmas to all of our children and families!!

Vancouver Quarter at Christmas With King’s Lynn’s festive lights switched on, the countdown to Christmas is officially on and there are plenty of reasons to discover King’s Lynn ahead of the big day. There will be festive Late-Night Shopping events, and no countdown to Christmas would be complete without Father Christmas jetting in to meet children in his grotto. Late Night Shopping launched on November 29 and runs every Thursday evening until Christmas Day with stores around the town centre remaining open until 8pm. There will also be festive street entertainers, music and activities for all the family to enjoy on all these Thursdays leading up to Christmas.

Father Christmas will be visiting King’s Lynn every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday right up to Christmas – albeit he will leave Lynn a bit earlier on Christmas Eve to get back to the North Pole to finalise everything and check on those cheeky elves! The grotto is free for children to attend but donations to the Vancouver Quarter’s chosen charity, EACH, are welcomed. Father Christmas’ grotto will be situated within the shopping centre and bookings need to be made via their website but move fast as these appointments are snapped up quickly.

T

his time last year I sat down to write my first column for the Simply magazines. I can hardly believe 12 months has already gone. So much has happened this year for me professionally and personally; it’s very difficult to have imagined I would be sitting here with a 6 week old, never mind everything else! Change is a big thing. It affects us all in different ways, but for most people, the thought of change and what that might bring is very scary indeed. Inevitably, the end results aren’t anywhere near as bad as we are expecting, we just sort of get on with it. Is it then not so much the actual change but the perceived pathways that might be the problem? Do we let our minds imagine worse than what is really coming? It is said children have imaginary friends, but as adults I believe we have imaginary enemies. Those enemies might be what other people think of us, tangible things that we think might happen, situations or feelings that we don’t want to deal with. The enemy might even be ourselves. The enemies are real to us because we are naturally overthinkers, and because the things we tell our brains are what they believe. This year I have had to deal with a few of my own ‘imaginary enemies’. Although all our stories are very different, there are undeniably some common themes within them; self-worth, being ‘good enough’, obligation to put others

14 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

above ourselves to name but a few. My theme for December (as appears to have been my theme for 2018!) is to be yourself, and to be happy. We most often don’t realise we are perfect the way we are. Our only purpose is to be ourselves, otherwise we will deprive the universe of who we came here to be. If you are waiting for someone or something else to validate who you are, then you are going to be waiting a very long time! One small positive thought in the morning about yourself can change your whole day…try it! It’s weird in the beginning, especially if you say it out loud, but it really does work. It’s just a small piece in the puzzle of life, but lots of small pieces add up to something brighter which puts us in a more positive position when we fear change looming on the horizon. To finish this years writing I am going to borrow some sage words from the Dalai Lama “It is under the greatest adversity that there exists the greatest potential for doing good, both for oneself and others’. There exists in your darkest hour the opportunity to use it to heal yourself or use the experience to help others. Forgive what you thought was unforgiveable and let go of what’s holding you back. Wishing you all a very merry, peaceful and love filled Christmas. See you in 2019!

Love Annette xx

larkes Cleaning Services Ltd was established in 2015 with only having a handful of clients and one employee. Since then it has grown to having 18 employees and around 70 clients. Our client base is in and around Lincolnshire with work ranging from New Builds such as The Quadrant, Chestnut Homes, Barnes Construction and many others. We provide Domestic cleaning with varied frequencies to suit the customer, we always provide the cleaning operative to suit our customer. We provide much more than just cleaning. If our client is elderly or unwell I choose a cleaning operative who may have relevant previous experience to suit the customers’ possible needs. We take the time to talk with our customer and get to know them and vice versa. Our Cleaning Operatives are trained, uniformed, DBS checked and Insured. We use all our own high standard cleaning products unless specifically requested to use others by our customers. We provide End of Tenancy cleans or Move in/ out cleans for private and estate agent customers. House clearances are something we started to do last year and has proved very successful and in high demand. We are able to provide cleaning in a wide range

of areas. No job is too big! If you need a job doing in a day, we get a team together to complete the work and then it is inspected on completion. Oven cleaning can be done as one off, window cleaning services, and carpet and upholstery cleaning. We like to pride ourselves in our high standard of cleaning. We go that extra mile to make your home clean, tidy and welcoming when you get home. We will iron if required and change bed

linen. All our customers have different needs; I meet personally with all new customers to establish exactly what is required. We also understand that sometimes things can change. We are adaptable and will do what you require. We invoice monthly for work carried out and simple bank transfer is all it takes and we have recently been awarded Safe Contractor Accreditation for the 2nd year, showing our commitment to Health and Safety.

For some, hiring a home carer is the best option. These carers either live at home to ensure round the clock care, or come throughout the course of the day to check in and take care of tasks that elderly people cannot take care of themselves, such as certain cleaning duties. Live-athome carers are a good choice for families who are extremely busy and unable to provide the necessary assistance to their elderly family member. Additionally, these carers are helpful when the family member has certain conditions which require 24 hour supervision and assistance, such as mobility issues or conditions like Alzheimer’s or dementia. Another option, for people who remain healthy and active in their older years, is to purchase a home medical alert system. The purpose of senior alert systems is to provide a quickly accessible method of alerting the emergency services of any problems your loved one may have. Although many people opt out of purchasing an alert system because they rely on telephones, the benefit of a medical alert device over a phone is that, since the device is worn on the body, it is immediately accessible. This is particularly helpful because when someone has an accident in an area of the house without a phone, or they are rendered immobile due to a fall or other situation, they can simply press the button on either their

medical alert bracelet or necklace which will immediately alerts the company providing the service of their situation and send out an ambulance if need be. Typically, senior family members prefer a medical alert device as it affords them more independence than a home carer; however, it is ultimately up to the family to decide together which arrangement provides the best care for their loved ones. A live-in carer should be a priority for senior citizens with more severe conditions, but for those who are still healthy and active a medical alert device will usually suffice, especially for those who are still cared for by family regularly. The constant availability of aid provided by these services is a huge reassurance to family members who, for one reason or another, cannot provide the round the clock care their loved ones require and deserve. With the help of a medical alert service you know your elderly family members can get help in any situation, giving them the safety and confidence to continue living alone, and giving you the peace of mind knowing that they will be taken care of 24 hours a day.

the Tub

You may think that hot tubs are just for fun but they can actually have health and wellbeing benefits too! • Hot tubs and spas help with minor aches and pains, soothing sore joints and muscles. The buoyancy of the water removes pressure from joints. Heat is carried deep into your muscles, allowing them to relax and bringing temporary pain relief. Hydrotherapy is very helpful for specific, painful conditions like arthritis and knee ailments. • The heat helps increase blood flow throughout the body. Warming blood causes blood vessels to dilate. After as little as 20 minutes, blood pressure is reduced.

18 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

• The focused streams of water from a hot tub’s jets provide therapeutic massage you can control the intensity of, effectively relieving chronic lower back pain. It’s like having your own personal massage therapist on call! The warm water increases your heart rate but lowers blood pressure. You get many of the same benefits of exercise but with less stress and strain on the heart. • The steam from the water can open up nasal and bronchial passages, improving

upper respiratory health. • Studies have shown that just 30 minutes a day spent in a hot tub or spa results in a significant drop in blood sugar levels. This is a big benefit for those with Type 2 diabetes. • Relaxing in a hot tub or spa can help relieve tension headaches, induce relaxation, reduce stress, increase a general sense of wellness and well-being, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep quality, depth and duration.

Happy

Food & Drink

New Year You had a great idea a few weeks ago to host a New Year’s Eve party but now reality has hit home and there will be 30 hungry mouths to feed and the expectation of a ‘show stopper’ spread. Don’t worry if you’re in panic mode as we have got some top tips to help you throw a fabulous party with minimal effort. Decorations Sometimes the clichés work…. keep it simple and less is more in the case of decorations. A little bit of sparkle goes a long way! Use candles on tables, glitter on black table cloths and glitter dipped balloons around your house. If you can find some disco ball baubles then why not change your tree decorations to just sparkles? As it’s New Years Eve many peoples resolutions will start the very next day, so it’s the last opportunity to indulge before it’s all about health. Why not create a sparkling dessert table and a glitzy champagne bar? Food Preparation is definitely the key here. Plan out what you can serve as a buffet so you aren’t stuck in the kitchen all night – this doesn’t mean it has to be stale sandwiches and sausage rolls. Here are my favourites to serve up • Anti-pasti platter • Fresh bread with dipping oils • Cheese, crackers and chutneys • Mini savoury pastries • Chocolate dipped strawberries If you have children coming too, why not set them up their own picnic table with cardboard lunch boxes and treats for them to fill it with – sandwiches, pizza, fruit, crisps, drinks etc.

It’s all about the presentation with food, think about having various plates, trays and serving platters to mix up your look. How about investing in some small signs to tell people what you have put out for them? If you are having a smaller dinner party gathering then again think of dishes you can prepare in advance that don’t involve hours in the kitchen watching over the cooker whilst your guests are enjoying the evening, you want to have fun too. Music Again keep it simple, why not look at playlists that are already set up for you – services such as Spotify and amazon music are perfect for this task! Alternatively ask guests to suggest their two songs of choice and create your own personalised bespoke playlist for the evening. The Big Countdown As midnight approaches how are you going to see in the new year? You could fill a large glass vase with party poppers, fireworks in the garden or sparklers? Make sure you have glasses ready to quickly fill with fizz around 11.45pm, the radio or TV tuned in ready to hear the famous Big Ben chimes and enjoy! www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 21

Skegness Esplanade and Tower Gardens When Skegness was connected to the railway in 1873 the numbers of visitors increased rapidly, at a time when agriculture was beginning to decline. By this time much of the land was owned by the Earl of Scarborough who saw the opportunity to convert the estate to meet the demands of the new summertime trade. A plan of the new town was drawn up in 1868 by Civil Engineers Clarke and Pickwell, who went on to design and construct the pier, and Skegness became a seaside resort, superimposed on the old village of 350 inhabitants, with a grid system layout of wide, tree lined streets, parades, a new main shopping street and supporting amenities. Work began in 1877 with the building of a sea wall. Within the first five years of development the Pleasure Gardens, with bandstand and Pavillion, an indoor swimming bath and a pier one-third of a mile long had been built. Tower Gardens (then known as the Pleasure Gardens), were of particular distinction, created from a site used for storing coal that had been landed by ships locally from Tyneside. The glory of the newly created town was its pier. Opened in 1881 by the Duke of Edinburgh it was at the time the fourth longest in Britain. In 1882 it is recorded that over the August Bank Holiday there were 20,000 visitors to the pier, the majority having arrived by train simply to ‘walk the plank’. By the end of the 19th century a number of new hotels had opened but by 1900 the Seacroft Hydro was the biggest, and was renamed in 1921 as the Seacroft Hotel. Sea air had been recognised as having a recuperative influence long before John Hassall created his famous Jolly Fisherman poster for Skegness in 1908, and at the end of the 1800s convalescent homes were being erected. Many were financed by wealthy benefactors or by large companies for their employees; the Countess of Scarborough established one in Park Avenue, for women only, in the 1890’s. The Derbyshire Miners Convalescent Home opened in 1928, and in 1939 they added a holiday camp alongside, to give the miners their very own ‘Butlin’s’. The contraction of the coal industry had an impact, and the camp, was forced to close in 1989. Homes to provide seaside holidays for 24 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

disadvantaged children from Nottingham and Derby had been opened in the 1890’s in Scarborough Avenue, Brunswick Drive and Roseberry Avenue but only that in Scarborough Avenue remains. Following the end of the First World War, the Earl of Scarborough offered to sell the whole of the foreshore to Skegness Urban District Council. The deal was completed in 1922 and included the beach, parades, Pleasure Gardens (now the Tower Gardens), Marine Gardens and the Sands Pavilion. Billy Butlin first visited Skegness with his hoopla stall which he had previously operated in Bristol and Olympia, London. He set up stall in 1925 on a site off North Parade known as The Jungle, close to where the County Hotel stands today. The fairground was originally on the central beach, south of the pier, but after the First World War it was moved to the seaward side of North Parade, filling the space between the pier entrance and the figure 8 switchback at the Sea View end of the parade. Butlins amusements including model cars, a slide, a haunted house, were on the other side of the road, an area which also accommodated a theatre and mini-zoo. The seaside of the parade was the main draw for crowds with racing games using small model race horses and Charlie Severn’s Aerial Flight which, shown on the 1906 OS map, predated most of the other attractions. This consisted of two parallel wire cables suspended between high wooden platforms. The flyer clutched an inverted handle above their head and swung themselves to and fro towards the far platform with a safety net to catch the numerous ‘drop-outs’. There was a wooden studio where an artist drew portraits and sold his landscape paintings, a photo studio, a bowling alley with an Ariel motorcycle on show, a crystal maze, hall of mirrors and balloons for sale. There were roundabouts, helter skelter, swingboats, a rifle range, coconut shies and stalls selling ice cream. But, 1929 was the last summer for everyone. A covenant relating to new building compelled the council to remove all temporary structures and give notice to all stall holders, although it allowed them to relocate to a new amusement park to be built on the other side of the pier. Billy Butlin offered to build and operate it for himself and the other occupiers and the council accepted. From here Butlin

went from strength to strength as he adapted his various ventures including the first Dodgem bumper cars to be seen in Britain. North Parade was developed with permanent attractions and in 1930 the opposite side of the parade began to be built up with private hotels and, later, residential flats. In the post Second World War years some of the amenities provided in the 1920s and 1930s needed replacement, and by the end of the 20th century the largest, most notable change is the replacement of the big open-air swimming pool and the Embassy Ballroom. Tower esplanade was revamped and the 1990s saw the completion of new sea defences, incorporating marine walks the full length of the seashore. The new defences and walks had little impact on Jenkins’ landscape and likewise, new attractions in the form of Natureland and Seal Sanctuary (1965) and the Aquarium (2015, formerly known as Pandas Palace (1986) have also respected the earlier landscape features.

The Moss Man The Moss Man has been operating in the Skegness and Louth areas for over three years now and has built up a large customer base. With our newest operator, Adam, we now cover Boston, Woodhall Spa and Spilsby areas. We are based in Sloothby near Skegness, Lincolnshire. Through being in the building trade for many years we realised that keeping block paving weed and moss free is a real problem. For years pressure washing has been the only real option, although a wire brush with a long handle is also useful if you have the time. Neither of these options kill the weeds or moss however, they simply remove the top greenery. In the case of the weeds it leaves the roots intact ready for regrowth and in the case of the moss any spores left behind have a nice damp environment to thrive. Pressure washing can also remove the sand which the blocks are laid on making your blocks drop and causing untold damage to your driveway which, in turn, could lead to having it re-laid. We kill the weeds and treat the moss and

algae. We make sure the weeds have been killed at the root before brushing all the debris from between the block work. After all debris is removed we treat the surface to remove any algae left on the blocks. This will keep the surface of your blocks clean. We then re-treat the block paving every three months to help control the regrowth. As I’m sure you’re aware unless the blocks are maintained the weeds and moss will keep returning. We clean your drive from only £99.00. then going forward we maintain it from only £29.99 every three months. It’s cheaper than getting your windows cleaned. We are now also treating roofs without standing on them or upsetting your neighbours. If you’ve got a new roof or driveway or have recently had them cleaned, don’t let them get back to their old state

again. Let us maintain that fresh look so you don’t have to worry. We are fully qualified and insured for your piece of mind. If your roof or drive is green and you want it clean call the Moss Man for an eco-friendly gleam! Call 01754 761606 for a quote today or email adam@themossman.co.uk

New Volvo V60 PROS ‘N’ CONS à Handsome à Comfortable à Powerful à Efficient à Pricey options

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS

(Volvo V60 D4 Momentum Pro - as tested)

A

t first glance, you think the new Volvo V60 is the V90. Then you get closer and realise it’s smaller than its brother. The cars look very similar, and that’s a good thing because they’re both handsome. If you put both models next to each other, I bet you’d agree with me that the V60 beats the V90 in terms of attractiveness. Why? Because it’s more compact and as a result, the car looks more taut and athletic. But the new estate has far more about it than sex appeal. The outgoing V60’s boot has been superseded by a load area that’s the biggest in its segment. Open the tailgate, and 539 litres of cargo capacity greets you. Crucially, the fresh V60 beats its German foes in this area. The BMW 3 Series Touring’s boot only offers 495 litres and Audi’s A4 Avant manages just 505-litres. The Swede is longer than the Audi and BMW too,

meaning there’s decent room for four adult occupants. A fifth person could squeeze into the middle of the back seat, but a prominent transmission tunnel hump hampers legroom. In the front, all looks classy and relaxed, with a dashboard that is mainly digital. There’s not as much metal or wood in the V60 when compared with the V90 - instead, you get soft plastics. However, this doesn’t rain on the parade - everything still looks solid and well screwed together. Behind the wheel, the new V60 is planted and comfy. I was handed the keys to the 190PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder D4 model. The diesel engine pulls like a train with zero to 62mph arriving in 7.9 seconds. Top speed is 137mph. It’s an efficient unit too, returning a claimed average of 61.4mpg. The new estate car’s ride is excellent, primarily due to the flexible suspension system, and the steering weights up well from 40mph. These two things alone make

à Max speed: 137 mph à 0-62 mph: 7.9 secs à Combined mpg: 61.4 à Engine layout: 2.0 litre four-cylinder diesel turbo à Max. power (PS): 190 à CO2: 119 g/km

Price: £36,350 the 2018 model V60 a delight to drive. It’s entirely suited to the UK’s roads, making it an ideal commuting machine. Thanks to its general roominess, it’s also a perfect family vehicle. The new Volvo V60’s spec is a bit of a downer. From launch, there are only two levels of trim - Momentum and Inscription. Happily, the more athletic R-Design and elevated Cross-Country variants will soon join the party. And while the V60 is well kitted-out with features like LED headlights, sat-nav and a portrait touchscreen, other alluring accessories, such as semi-autonomous driving aids and Apple CarPlay, are on the options list. These can make an already costly car even more expensive to buy or lease. Still, you should have the V60 on your shopping list if an estate car is what you’re after – especially one as eye-catching and accommodating as this.
