Welcome to the August issue What a lovely summer we are having, we have had lots of days out enjoying the weather – we have been over to the coast, Rutland Water, as well as more local days at Central Park and Heckington pool and walks to our local park, there’s lots to do right on our doorstep! In this issue we are looking at dealing with toddler tantrums, looking after your eyes as well as celebrating several British food traditions – pub grub, afternoon tea and a summertime pint in a beer garden! We are also looking at Kirton’s classic car show, so if you’ve not got any plans for August 13th why not head over to see what they have to offer? Whilst the weather is still nice it’s a great opportunity to get all those outside jobs done, we are looking at fencing this month, do you know what your legal responsibilities are? Finally this month Tim is reviewing the Peugeot 3008. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and the summer holidays!

Local Plan submitted One of the area’s most important planning documents is in its final stages. The South East Lincolnshire Local Plan – a wide-ranging plan for future development in Boston Borough and South Holland District over the next 20 years – has now been submitted to the Planning Inspectorate who will examine the Local Plan on behalf of the Government. Four public consultation events have been held over the last few years to inform the production of the plan and thousands of comments have been received over that time from individuals and other interested parties. The Planning Inspectorate will now consider whether the Local Plan has been prepared in accordance with the legislation and will also explore any outstanding subjects of disagreement. The Planning Inspectorate will arrange an Examination in Public, possibly within the next 11 to 14 weeks. The public will be able to attend, but further representations at the examination will now be by invitation from the Inspector only, and only from those who have made comments through the consultation events and have registered their interest in attending the examination. The Inspector will produce a report with recommendations to be considered by the plan’s authors – the South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee – with the aim of adopting the plan by April, 2018. Cllr Claire Rylott, Boston Borough Council Cabinet member and vicechairman of the joint committee said: “This is a major milestone for the future of Boston in bringing forward new homes, businesses and infrastructure as well as protecting those things which make the area special.” For more information about the Local Plan and regular updates on progress towards the Examination see http://www.southeastlincslocalplan. org/

Jerry Green’s advice to Stay Cool this Summer When the sun comes out, we Brits are keen to make the most of it, but have you ever considered the danger summer poses for your fourlegged friend? Jerry Green Dog Rescue has compiled a few top tips for staying cool this summer with your dog. Firstly, never leave your dog unattended in a hot car. Leaving a car window open makes little or no difference and your dog could die in a hot car in a matter of minutes. No quick trip to the shop is worth putting your dog in serious danger. Put your dog first and make sure they’re never left unattended in a hot car. And if you see it, report it immediately. Watch out for hot tarmac! Imagine being on holiday in the sunshine and how painful walking hot sand is on your bare feet as you run awkwardly run to the cold water in the sea to cool your skin. It really hurts! Hot tarmac can have the same effect on your dog’s paws and can even cause serious burns on their pads. Remember the 5 second rule, too hot for you stand on for 5 seconds then it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. We can feel grumpy when we’re hot and bothered and dogs are no different, if your dog normally joins you on the school run remember he might not feel quite so tolerant in the hot weather with the hello’s he normally enjoys from the children, so he is probably best left to chill at home in the shade.

Plan your walks around the cooler times of day such as early morning and late evening when your dog can walk without the heat of the sun making him feel uncomfortable. Some dogs might appreciate a paddling pool on a hot day to cool down in and some dogs might benefit from frozen treats or Kong’s to give them something nice and cold to keep them busy. In some instances a cold, wet towel applied underneath the dog for them to lie on can help cool down a dog who is over-heating. If your dog is a keen sun bather in the garden you might even need to consider using sun screen on their skin and make sure they have regular time inside to cool off. And finally, always make sure your dog has access to fresh drinking water and to shade and if you have any concerns about your dog’s welfare then contact your vet for advice. Enjoy the summer and the great outdoors and make sure your dog safe, happy and comfortable too.

Plant vandal A teenage girl who damaged plants and engaged in other anti-social activity in Boston has agreed to abide by a six-month Acceptable Behaviour Contract. She will also undertake some days of restorative justice, which may involve litter picking and weeding. The 16-year-old was seen in the presence of her mother by Boston Borough Council’s anti-social behaviour officer and presented with CCTV evidence of her misdemeanours. Detective work by the officer, aided by Boston’s CCTV system, identified her as responsible for vandalising planters in Boston town centre and being involved in an earlier incident in which trees were destroyed at St John’s Park. With the help of partner agencies she was also revealed to be involved in other incidents of anti-social behaviour including pelting food at passers-by from a rooftop vantage and shop lifting. If you are suffering from anti-social behaviour or have information about anti-social behaviour please contact the anti-social behaviour team on 01205 314318.

Taxi! In a wheelchair? They will look after you Taxi and private hire vehicle drivers driving wheelchair-accessible vehicles in Boston could soon, under equalities legislation, be required by law to take steps to ensure passengers are carried in safety and in comfort whilst in their wheelchair, give passengers reasonably necessary mobility assistance and not make any additional charge for carrying passengers in wheelchairs. Boston Borough Council’s policy currently requires drivers to meet these requirements, but provisions under the Equalities Act 2010 makes it an offence if drivers of those vehicles fail to comply

with the requirements of the Act where a council opts to publish a list of wheelchairaccessible vehicles. Exemptions will be available for drivers who, for medical or physical reasons, cannot provide this service. Information on wheelchair-accessible vehicles is already available, but Boston Borough Council has now, under recentlyenacted provisions of the Equalities Act 2010, resolved to publish a list of wheelchair accessible vehicles. Boston Borough Council will be consulting with vehicle owners on the publication of the list and responses will be

Each month local councillors will be giving their updates on the local area, this month Paul Skinner shares with us what is happening in Boston over the next few months.

Paul’s Notes

e have a full programme of events lined up this summer, with an emphasis on family events and something to suit everyone. Many councilorganised events have already been held to kick off our own summer programme – such as the 1940s day in Central Park. Boston town centre was again THE place to be earlier this month when the 21st Boston Bike Night was held, another tremendous success with all things on two wheels taking over the town centre, and all for free. In between there have been concerts, live music, a cycling roadshow and, of course, our regular markets. The next big thing will be a repeat of our popular beach days in Central Park on Thursday and Friday, August 3 and 4 from 10am to 3pm. Bringing the beach into Boston has proved so popular that this year it will remain for children to enjoy throughout the rest of August. Thousands of people enjoyed last year’s event and the sandy beach will again be laid in the park and donkey rides, bouncy castles, circus skills, games, competitions and beachrelated arts and crafts will be laid on, all for free. Boston Big Local will again fund this year’s event and it will be supported by partner agencies - Mayflower Housing, Boston Children’s Centre, Transported Arts and Boston United in the Community. Another big favourite, is the Dragon Boat Festival. This year’s event is on Sunday, August 13, on the River Witham where it passes through Witham Way Country Park, which is well worth a visit in its own right at any time. There will be additional attractions such as bouncy castles, stalls and refreshments and the racing begins at around 10am, continuing until around 3.30pm. Central Park will be the venue for you to bring along a picnic in the park and enjoy free family crafts with Sam’s House on Wednesday, August 9. The park will then host a family fun sports day on Friday, August 18, from 10am to 3pm. Local clubs will be on hand to introduce all-comers to a range of sports. There will be storytelling by library staff and another chance to picnic in the park on Wednesday, August 23.

The next big event in Central Park, and something new, will be the two nights of outdoor cinema experience on Friday and Saturday, August 25 and 26. On the Friday we will screen Mary Poppins and on the Saturday Despicable Me. You can bring a picnic and the park cafe will be open, popcorn, sweets and candy floss will be available and there will be a licensed bar. Looking further ahead and into September we have another first with the Boston Food Festival in the Market Place from 10am to 3pm on Sunday, September 24. If you appreciate fine beer then Friday and Saturday, October 27 and 28, complete the hat trick of firsts (thirsts!) for Boston when the Oktoberfest beer festival takes place in Central Park. This stomping Bavarian celebration of all things frothy in the Beerhall Tent will feature music, games, entertainment, food, singing and ... bier in steins. An Oompah band will lead the festivities. There is also a full summer programme of activities for children in the borough – everything from football fun and badminton smash up to spy school and pirate treasure trail. The Guildhall will also take part in national Heritage Open Days on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 6 to 9, when the county theme will be Freedom, Justice and Equality – time to visit the Guildhall’s courtroom and prison cells. And if traditional afternoon tea takes your fancy a literal feast of treats will be available in the Guildhall’s banqueting hall from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, September 9, £9.95 per person, tickets from the Guildhall Finally, put a date in your diaries for Thursday, November 23, and Boston’s annual Christmas market, Illuminate Parade and lights switch-on. This is by no means an exhaustive list and more information can be found at www.boston. gov.uk/theevent also www.boston.gov.uk/ summer2017 and at www.bostonguildhall. co.uk and www.bostonleisurecentre.co.uk Never let it be said that there’s nothing to do in Boston. Cllr Paul Skinner, Cabinet member for town centre, Boston Borough Council

Advice

Parcel Delivery

T

wo thirds of online shoppers suffer problems with parcel delivery! Two in three people (69%) who shop online have had parcels lost, damaged or turn up late in the last year, according to research by Citizens Advice. As the autumn sales season gets underway, Citizens Advice says problems with late deliveries affect online shoppers the most - including those who paid for a premium service guaranteeing next day or a named day delivery. Other common issues include parcels being left in unsecure locations, such as bins, and unnecessary failed deliveries - where people waited at home for a parcel, only to receive a note saying they’d missed it. A survey of over 2,000 online shoppers carried out in December 2016 reveals: • 38% of people have had a parcel arrive late - including more than one in ten 16%) who paid for premium delivery service. • More than 1 in 10 have received damaged items. • More than 1 in 5 had a parcel go missing • 28% had a parcel left in an unsecure location • 28% were at home but had a note through the door saying the parcel couldn’t be delivered. A new report ‘Parcel delivery: Delivery services in the online shopping market’ published by the charity, highlights the problems people face resolving their delivery complaints. More than half of people (54%) don’t take any action if their parcel is late - such as complaining or asking for a refund. Meanwhile a third of consumers who receive a damaged parcel don’t take action. For those that did try to complain, over 40% ran into problems - such as difficulty contacting the retailer or delivery company on the phone. The research also found that half of consumers were unsure about who was responsible for the delivery of their parcel in the first place.

Citizens Advice’s consumer service helps people with around 2,600 parcel delivery issues each year. In 2016, over 23,000 people also visited the charity’s website seeking help for parcel problems. A common issue reported to Citizens Advice was parcels that had been left in rubbish bins. One woman who came to Citizens Advice for help was on holiday when her parcel was left in a bin. When she returned the bin had been emptied and the parcel gone. When she tried to complain to the retailer she was told it was not their responsibility. Another man ordered a car part online which was left in a bin that was emptied by the time he got home from work. He complained to the sender but they said it wasn’t their fault. Citizens Advice suggests a number of measures to make it easier for consumers to sort out their delivery problems, including: • Asking retailers and parcel firms to explain more clearly on their websites what customers’ delivery rights are. • Set up a quality mark scheme for parcel delivery firms that retailers could use to judge which offer the best service to their customers. Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire’s Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Hellon, said: “Online shopping should be quick and convenient - but problems with delivery create unwanted hassle. “Waiting at home for an item that doesn’t arrive is frustrating and time consuming but our research shows many people aren’t taking action to resolve delivery issues, and others are running into problems if they do. “Retailers are responsible for getting the parcel to the customer - and making this clearer to customers at the checkout could help them sort out problems quicker if deliveries go astray.” How to solve online delivery problems Your parcel doesn’t arrive when you expected it to

Standard delivery: If you’re worried an item hasn’t arrived by the date agreed on your order, contact the retailer to find out where it is. The retailer is responsible for getting orders delivered to you, not the parcel company. If you didn’t agree a specific delivery date, it should arrive within 30 days of when you ordered it. You can cancel the order and get a full refund if it doesn’t arrive after 30 days. Premium delivery: You can claim a refund for some of the cost of delivery. Legally, retailers only need to refund the cost of the cheapest delivery option - so if you paid for a premium ‘next day’ or ‘named day’ service, you may not get all your money back. Your parcel is damaged It is the retailer’s responsibility to make sure items arrive in good condition. Contact them about the damage and they will either offer to send you a new item or refund you. Someone was waiting at home for the parcel, but a note said it couldn’t be delivered Contact the parcel firm to arrange a redelivery, or alternatively if you don’t want it any more you can cancel the order if it’s been less than 14 days since you bought it and get a refund. Although legally you’re not entitled to compensation in this situation it’s worth complaining to the delivery firm and retailer - they will value your feedback and may offer you a goodwill gesture. Your parcel was left in an unsecure location If you get a note saying your parcel has been left in a certain location but it isn’t there, the retailer should replace it or give you your money back. If you receive the item but aren’t happy with where it was left, complain to both the retailer and delivery firm. Although not legally obliged, they may offer you some sort of compensation as a goodwill gesture.

Boston High School A team of 12 Year 9 students from BHS entered the Lincolnshire STEM Challenge 2017 on June 22nd. There are over 100 students participating from Lincolnshire schools and there are four events: • Designing and racing a vehicle, • programming/robotics, • medical diagnostics • E-Fit criminal profiling.

Boston College and The Federation of Small Businesses joined together to recognise the hard work of Apprentices and Trainees and their employers by hosting the Boston College and FSB Apprenticeship Awards. The awards focus on celebrating the success of Apprentices and Trainees and appreciating the key roles that good employers play when it comes to developing the skilled workforce of the future. The Apprentices’ Employer or Assessor made nominations for the awards and the nominees were then judged on feedback from the employer, taking into account the quality of their work and ability to adapt to a working environment. The event was held at Boston College’s Sam Newsom Centre and offered awards in the following Apprenticeship areas; Accounting, Retail and Business, Animal Care and Science, Catering and Hospitality, Computing and Engineering, Construction, Joinery and Plumbing, Early Years and

Teaching, Electrical, Hair and Beauty, Health and Social Care and Motor Vehicle. Prizes on offer to those nominated included medals, certificates, vouchers, tools and equipment. There was also a special award for the ‘Apprentice of the Year 2017’, awarded to Kelsey Daw, an Apprentice at Strands of Spalding. For the success and recognition in her role Kelsey received a £50 voucher and a personal trophy.

Each event has a winner of who showed best teamwork, attitude and achievements with an overall team winning the whole day. We are delighted to report that Julide and Kim won the first event! This is itself an achievement, but more great news was to come as it was announced that Manal Ashraf and Hana Rehan had won the overall trophy for best team, and they are now through to the Finals in January where all the county winners will compete!

The winners demonstrated a great work ethic, resilience, ambition and achievement – suggesting our future is in good hands. I’m really grateful for the sponsorship from the Federation of Small Businesses, which served as the catalyst for this special Apprentice event and for the support of so many Apprenticeemployers, both large and small, who came to cheer on their awardwinning Apprentices.”

25TH ANNUAL CLASSIC

Car Show in Kirton

T

he Boston Classic Car Club was formed in 1990 when a group of about 12 like minded people decided to start a local classic car club. From these small beginnings they now have a membership of over 160, not bad for a regional club! The only stipulation, age wise, is that to display a car on the Club stand at shows it must be over 15 years of age. There are a wide variety of vehicles within the Club, ranging from the 20’s up to the late 80’s. Their annual Classic Car Show is held at Graves Park, Kirton just off the A16 road between Spalding and Boston. If you are interested in exhibiting contact Den Pattrick on 01205 360617 for an entry form, entry is free and there are many trophies up for grabs. All exhibitors must be in place by 10.30am, prize giving takes place at 4pm. This year the Club is raising funds for the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance with a Grand Raffle. With over 450 vehicles expected, the show will be open to the public from 10am - 4.30pm, tickets cost £4.00 for adults and children are free. There will be a variety pf autojumble trade stalls, crafts, classic cars, motorcycles, trophies, bar BBMF flypast (weather permitting). For more details contact Paula Garbbitas on 07415 336815

Family life

Dealing with Toddler Tantrums

Tantrums are perhaps one of the most difficult areas of children’s behaviour for parents to manage. They are both stressful and potentially embarrassing, which makes it extremely hard for parents to remain calm during toddler tantrums. Nobody who has ever been a parent will ever judge anyone because their child is having a tantrum. Precious few who have not had children will do so either. Bear this in mind, and you will find it much easier to remain calm and non-embarrassed in the face of a screaming, red-faced toddler. There are several basic ways to manage tantrums. These include:

Avoidance A behaviour diary may show you some easy ways to change your actions and routines that may have a huge impact on your child’s behaviour.

Do they need more routine around feeding and sleeping? If tea-time is fixed by other events, do you need to provide a snack after your child’s afternoon sleep to keep them going? Subtle changes may often have a big impact on behaviour, so don’t be afraid to try things out to see what happens. You can also use avoidance techniques for non-compliance and defiance. For example, if getting ready to go out is always a trial, try making it a race. Say ‘I bet I can get ready to go out quicker than you can’, or ‘I bet I can tie my shoelaces faster than you can get your shoes on’. Competition is a great incentive! The important thing is to avoid either of you getting backed into a corner where confrontation is the only way out.

Family Life Distraction Once you know what is likely to trigger your child’s tantrums, you may be able to head them off, with a bit of judicious distraction. Point out something interesting, or ask what they would like to do later/tomorrow/at the weekend, or speculate on what you might have for lunch. It doesn’t matter what you say, as long as it is interesting and different enough to catch their attention and help them move away from the problem issue.

Ignoring Often tantrums and tears are about attention. Ignoring them, therefore, sends a very strong message to your child, and will not be AT ALL what they want.

Managing your child’s screen time When you limit screen time, you give your child the gift of more time to read, engage in active play, and be a healthier child. With the array of media available for our kids today — and their amazing ability to watch TV, instant message, and listen to music all at the same time — what’s the best way to balance media exposure with other activities? How can you monitor what and how much your child consumes?

Use them as opportunities to watch together and discuss. Be on the alert for teachable moments. Pose questions like ‘Why do you think the characters are being mean to each other?’

Know your kids and know your values.

Keep media out of kids’ bedrooms.

If your child complains that all his friends are watching a particular TV show that contains a lot of sex and or violence, explain what your values are and why you are sticking to them

Be conscious of age-appropriateness. What’s OK for an 8 year old isn’t necessarily going to be OK for a 4 year old!

Set family rules and stick to them. It’s just like anything else in parenting, set guidelines. You could say, for example, that watching TV is OK from 7 to 9 p.m. or after the homework is done.

Limit screen time. While most experts recommend no more than one to two hours of screen time (TV, DVDs, computers and video games) per day, most kids are in front of a screen 45 hours per week!

Have regular family movie nights

16 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

It’s much easier to exercise control when your child is within view. So that means keeping video games, the TV and the computer in a common area where you can keep an eye on things.

Fairytales and Legends

The novelty of being ignored may even be enough to stop them in their tracks. Over time, it will ensure that they abandon the tantrums in favour of actions that get your attention, such as asking nicely. Ignoring a tantrum can be quite hard, especially if you are out and about. You may need to just sit down and wait for the screaming to stop. .

The hugely successful Fairytales and Legends returns to King’s Lynn town centre on Sunday 20 August for a day of magic, enchantment, princesses and superheroes! This free event is a great day out for children and families, packed full of things to see and do. Activities take place from 10am to 4pm at various locations around the town centre. Abbie Panks, Vancouver Quarter centre manager, said: “The day’s programme has something for children of all ages, from sound-play classes for toddlers, to craft workshops for older children. “Every event is free of charge, making this the perfect day out for all the family. Some activities need to be pre-booked, and I recommend you do so as early as possible. We’d also like to invite all children to come along in fancy dress!” Discover more at www.vancouverquarter.com/ fairytalesandlegends2017

Consequences If your child is capable of listening to you, and not so deep in screaming that you cannot communicate at all, then you may want to use this option. Tell them once nicely, making eye contact and smiling, what you want them to do. In this case, it is likely to be ‘stop shouting and behave nicely’. If they do not do it, ask them again, firmly, explaining briefly what will happen if they do not do as you ask (for example, they will have to sit on the bottom step of the stairs for a short time, or go to their room). If they still do not do it, then deliver on the consequence, calmly and firmly.

Health & beauty

The eyes have it! Brows Today our eyebrows get more care than ever before, but what treatments are there out there for you?

Microblading Microblading is a great means for women and men to thicken their existing eyebrows or darkening them thus making them more apparent by enhancing the most natural brows possible. This technique mimics your own eyebrow hairs which creates a feathering effect. By adding coloured pigment to the skin, this technique fills in empty spots on your brows to give them a full and flawless look. How is Microblading done? • An anesthetic cream is applied to reduce the sensation of pain • Once the desired brows are traced, a small blade is used to cut very small pieces of the top of layer of the skin away and apply the color which best matches your brow • There may be some redness and minor swelling, but that should disappear within a few hours to a couple of days.

BEFORE

AFTER

• The colour will likely fade by about 50 to 70 percent in the first two weeks so a followup session will be required. • It is important to avoid scrubbing the brow area or picking off any scabs that may form, in order to protect the new eyebrows. Is it safe? • In order to make sure you get the best quality treatment and minimize your risk for infection, make sure your technician is qualified and certified by a reputable company and has been performing the procedures for a minimum of 12 months.

HD Brows There are a number of steps – usually seven to create the perfect HD Brow. The whole appointment usually takes around 40 minutes, so it’s much more thorough than a standard eyebrow wax/thread and tint. It’s also worth leaving your brows alone for a few weeks so you get the best possible results. First you’ll have a consultation where the Brow Stylist talks through your brows, the shape, the colour and how you want them to look. It’s here you can talk about any issues you have with them – whether there are sparse areas or you’re unhappy with the shape, and they can advise on where to go

from there. If you are looking for thicker, fuller brows, it might be that you and your Brow Stylist decide on a regrowth programme but again, this will differ depending on what they’re like. If the eyebrows are overplucked you’ll work with them to grow in certain areas and you’ll be shown how to fill them in properly in between appointments and this is likely to take more appointments. If it’s only a certain area or row to grow back in, it will take fewer apointments. The next step is tinting the brows. The colour is matched to the hair colour and style that’s wanted so they don’t end up looking out of place. They apply the dye before any of the shaping starts so that it grabs onto all of the little baby hairs you might have so these can then be styled and help to fill out the brows. Once the dye has taken, the shaping starts. This is a mixture of waxing, threading (for the areas the wax may have missed) and plucking for any final stray hairs.

Wax & Tint A more traditional beauty treatment is a simple wax and tint. A colour dye is applied to your brows to match or darken your natural colour and then wax is used to remove any excess hair. You may also find your therapist will pluck any stray hairs which miss the wax! This treatment is great for anyone who isn’t looking to fill out their brows but to tidy them up.

Top Tips For Looking After Your Eyes We only get one pair of eyes and they work extremely hard for you during your life. With sight loss being the one sense that many fear about losing, it is vital that you look after your eyes in every way possible. Regular Eye Examinations Having an eye test isn’t merely just to see if you need glasses, but now considered as an important health examination that looks at both the health of your eye, as well as your general health. It is recommended that you have your eyes tested at least once every 2 years, although in some cases, more regular checkups are advised. You may even be entitled to an NHS funded test, so

call your local optician to find out more! Not Smoking Smoking has been proven to cause sight loss in multiple ways. Smoking greatly accelerates the progression of cataracts and puts your retina under great strain, leading to an increased risk of macular degeneration (a severe form of sight loss). You are also much more likely to have a contact lens problem if you smoke, which again may lead to a painful and sight threatening condition. Sun Protection The sun is a big source of ultraviolet (UV) light. We all think of sun cream to protect our skin but how do you

protect your eyes? (I’m not advising using sun cream in your eyes!). UV causes changes to the conjunctiva, the cornea and the crystalline lens, leading to raised yellow regions around the white of the eye and also speeding up the development of cataracts. UV can also lead to skin cancers, so we advise use of suncream on the face and around the eyelids. UV protective sunglasses, that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB radiation. If you use contact lenses, discuss with your optometrist ones that have a UV block to them. Eat Right The right diet is key when looking

after your eye health. A diet that is rich in fruit, vegetables and protein can really make a difference in regulating your eye health. A diet rich in dark green leafy vegetables (such as kale and spinach) helps keep the retina healthy, with flaxseed oil and omega essential fatty-acids helping regulate a healthy tear film, reducing the feeling of a dry eye. Safety First Make sure to consider your eye health when doing DIY or any other hazardous tasks. Safety lenses and frames can make a difference to being able to see your finished creation and a trip to A & E!

Tastes so good... Risotto is a northern Italian rice dish, that’s quick to prepare and yet a satisfying meal. Great for using up leftovers, why not experiment to add new ingredients?

Risotto INGREDIENTS

Ingredients for 2 servings 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic 2 small sticks of celery Half a red pepper, chopped into small pieces 1 vegetable stock cube 200ml boiling water 4 small handfuls of risotto rice Bacon (optional to make a non-vegetarian version) Parmesan cheese to top (if required)

Method • Heat some oil in a pan. • Lightly brown the onion and add the garlic • Add the rest of the chopped ingredients and fry for a couple of minutes until slightly softened. • Add the risotto rice and fry, stirring regularly for another couple of minutes. • Add the stock cube to the boiling water and pour onto the rice dish. • Cover with a lid and reduce the heat. • Once all the liquid has been absorbed, your dish is ready to serve.

Chocolate chip mini muffins

A lunchbox treat or perfect for picnics! INGREDIENTS Makes 24 mini muffins 1 ¾ cup plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 3 tsp cocoa ¾ cup caster sugar 1 ½ cups milk chocolate chips 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla essence 1/3 cup vegetable oil

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180c and line 2 x mini muffin trays with cake cases 2. Si the flour, baking powder, cocoa and sugar into a bowl then mix in 1 cup of the chocolate chips. 3. Whisk the egg, oil, vanilla, and milk in a cup 4. Mix all the ingredients together, gently folding the dry ingredients. 5. Fill each cake case approximately 2/3 full with around a tablespoon of mixture. 6. Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of chocolate chips over the top of the muffins and bake for around 20 mins unl risen.

Easy raspberry ice cream INGREDIENTS for 8 servings 200g fresh raspberries 50g caster sugar juice of 1 lemon 397g tin condensed milk 600ml double cream 200g frozen raspberries a few handfuls of chocolate chunks (optional) 1.5 tsp. Baking powder ½ tsp. Baking soda Pinch of salt

Method: • Put the fresh raspberries in a pan with the caster sugar and lemon juice and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. • In a bowl put the condensed milk and double cream and whisk by hand until the mixture thickens and falls in ribbons off of the whisk. • Next remove the raspberry mixture from the heat and sieve to remove all the pips. This will leave you with a thick sauce. • Now put the condensed milk and cream into a 2L food box and slowly add the raspberry sauce bit by bit, stirring gently with a spatula to create a rippled effect. • Next crush the frozen raspberries into small pieces. Add the frozen raspberry pieces and chocolate chips to the cream, condensed milk and raspberry sauce. • Place in freezer for at least 3 hours.

Extra tasty served warm! You could make 12 larger muffins as an alternative version. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 21

Food & drink

The love of a Beer Garden There are few finer things in life than sitting in a pub garden, the sun beating down, sipping an ice-cold drink or two. People love beer gardens, they’re certainly a cheerful place, but not everyone gets it right. So this got us thinking about what exactly it is that takes a beer garden from good to great? It’s all about creating atmosphere… Seating is key The original beer gardens in Germany lined up rectangular picnic tables in long rows to seat as many people as possible. This resulted in squashed patrons and elbows in the face, although it certainly forced strangers to talk to each other. Nowadays people prefer the option of a little more privacy and like to socialise with their own group of friends around tables or in booths. Shade and Shelter It’s fair to say us Brits are totally at the mercy of our weather, a long-lazy day in the sunshine can often be rudely interrupted with the odd gush of wind or downpour. Plus with our pasty skins we need to be careful not to burn when the sun does eventually get his hat on so parasols or pegolas are a must! Space for all the family What’s better on a summers afternoon or evening to kick back with a drink in hand whilst the children are able to play safely insight. Many pubs understand this and offer a variety of outdoor play equipment for younger patrons. Beer Of course this one is key, make sure it’s flowing. The beer garden has become something of a British institution and those who get it right are the ones who have thought carefully about the type of environment they want to create for their customers. So make sure on the next sunny afternoon you seek out your local and see what they have to offer!

Pub Grub

Us Brits’ love pub grub and according to new research from Mintel, sales of pub meals grew by an estimated 14% between 2012 and 2016 to reach £7.4 billion. In the same time period, sales of alcoholic drinks grew by 6%, while soft drink sales rose by 7%. The report reveals that it is increasingly likely that pub goers will be there for the food. In 2016, 23% of consumers said they had visited a pub in the past month because of the high quality of food on offer; while in 2017 this had risen to 30%. Currently, 69% of pub-goers say that one of the most important factors that would make them choose one pub over another is high-quality food, while one in six (16%) who visit pubs or bars to eat say they would go especially to try a new menu. Looking into the battle for the UK’s favourite pub dish, it’s steak that tops the menu. One in five (20%) Brits say that grilled steak is their favourite pub dish, narrowly pipping roast dinners (19%), burgers (15%) and fish and chips (14%) to the top spot. Falling flat, however, just 3% say beef wellington or sausage and mash is their best of the bar meals respectively. What’s more, giving a new meaning to ‘getting pie-eyed’ at the pub, 5% say pie is their favourite pub dish. While pub grub has not held the reputation of a fine dining destination in the past, today, Brits have high estimations of what they expect from public house cuisine. Almost half (45%) of pub-goers say that they would be put off ordering a particular dish at a pub or bar that wasn’t freshly made. It seems that pubs might be going back to their old-school ways with two in three (65%) pub-goers say they would like more pubs to have quiet areas free from music and TV. Meanwhile, many still value table service; 61% of pub-goers say that table service makes an evening more special, while 75% say it’s important for waiting staff to be able to explain the menu. 22 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

History of Afternoon Tea Tea consumption increased dramatically during the early nineteenth century and it is around this time that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is said to have complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon. At the time it was usual for people to take only two main meals a day, breakfast, and dinner at around 8 o’clock in the evening. The solution for the Duchess was a pot a tea and a light snack, taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon. Later friends were invited to join her in her rooms at Woburn Abbey and this summer practice proved so popular that the Duchess continued it when she returned to London, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for “tea and a walking the fields.” Other social hostesses quickly picked up on the idea and the practice became respectable enough to move it into the drawing room. Before long all of fashionable society was

sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches in the middle of the afternoon. Occasionally you will see hotels serving a ‘high tea’. Traditionally, the upper classes would serve a ‘low’ or ‘afternoon’ tea around four o’clock, just before the fashionable promenade in Hyde Park. The middle and lower classes would have a more substantial ‘high’ tea later in the day, at five or six o’clock, in place of a late dinner. The names derive from the height of the tables on which the meals are served, high tea being served at the dinner table. Many visitors from overseas still imagine that we are a nation where, in the words of the well-known song, ‘at half past three, everything stops for tea’. These days Afternoon Tea is usually only an occasional treat; a birthday celebration in a country house hotel, or a welcome break from a hectic days shopping ‘in town’.

Home & property

Are you Obliged

to Fence Your Property? We are all accustomed to seeing fences around fields and around the gardens of individual houses. So it may come as a surprise to learn that there is no general obligation in law to fence the boundaries of one’s land. There are a number of circumstances where the law requires that fences are erected. These are usually related to safety and include: • alongside railways: Railways Consolidation Act 1845; • around disused mines: Mines and Quarries Act 1954; • around building sites adjacent to highways, both road and path: Highways Act 1980; • to prevent livestock from straying from their fields: Animals Act 1971. A conveyance deed or a transfer deed may include a covenant requiring the purchaser to fence the land and any successors in title to forever maintain the fence. Of course most of us like to fence our property to ensure the safety of children and pets. There are many questions surrounding fences, here we can hopefully answer most of the common ones for you:

How high a fence can I put on my boundary? The height of fences is a matter of planning policy. To find out what is allowed in your area contact the local authority planning office. As a general rule, fences in rear gardens are allowed to be up to 2 metres high.

Who owns which fence? Is it true that every house owns the fence on its left side, as you look at it from the street? There is no general rule about whether you own the fence on the left or the fence on the right of your property. The truth of the matter

is this: it is the vendor who breaks up the land into smaller parcels before selling each parcel individually who assigns responsibility for the boundaries of the new land parcels that he creates. Normally this will be identified in the conveyance deed (or the transfer deed) the boundaries for which the purchaser is responsible.

If the deeds are silent on the question of responsibility for the boundary then you may have to work on the basis of the information given in the Seller’s Property Information Form by the vendor at the time you bought your property. It is sometimes possible to infer who is responsible for a fence by establishing the pattern of fence ownership along the same side of the street.

What can I do about the unsightliness of my neighbour’s fence? Unless your neighbour agrees, you cannot:

• paint, stain or varnish your neighbour’s fence to make it a more attractive colour; • affix close boards or panels to your face of the fence in order to conceal the support rails; • attach trellis or some other system to support plants that you wish to grow up your side of your neighbour’s fence. What you can do is: • plant free standing shrubs or a hedge to conceal the fence from your view; • erect your own fence alongside your neighbour’s fence. Can I hang things on my neighbour’s fence? Can I use my neighbour’s fence as a support for my own plants? Can I paint my side of my neighbour’s fence?

Only if your neighbour gives you permission to do so. Leaning things against your neighbour’s fence, hanging things on your neighbour’s fence, even using your neighbour’s fence as a makeshift retaining wall, will place a much heavier burden on the fence panels and supporting posts than they were designed to bear. The consequences of such actions are easy enough to predict and you will be liable for the cost of any repairs. On top of that you will still have to do, and pay for, the work that you did incorrectly and which resulted in the damage to your neighbour’s fence.

In short, anything you do to your neighbour’s fence without your neighbour’s permission - including staining, painting or applying preservative to your side of your neighbour’s fence, amounts to criminal damage. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 25

FAST FACTS

I

t is not unusual to see some big changes between an older and newer generation of the same model, but the all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV looks radically different to the outgoing one. That exiting generation, introduced in 2008, was a frumpy, chubby SUV that did little to inspire buyers. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV, though, is a different animal, burying the clumsy image of the last car six-feet under and achieving the European Car of the Year crown. Sometimes it can be difficult to separate SUVs out on the road because most of them drive alike. Many are set up for comfort, and that’s what the all-new 3008 is tuned for. The small steering wheel and light handling gives a feeling of sprightliness, even if that’s not the case, as it’s a tall, heavy car. However; that’s not a complaint, the designers and engineers have done a good job covering the traditional flaws of an SUV’s dynamics. There’s a wholesome medley of engines on offer, as with most Peugeot models: two petrol’s in the shape of a 131PS 1.2-litre unit and a 165PS 1.6-litre turbo. Then there are a couple of turbo diesel engines of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre capacity. What suits you best is largely going to depend on what sort of driving you do. Short urban trips suit the 1.2-litre petrol more, whereas longer journeys will fit the potential 70mpg obtainable from the 1.6-litre diesel. I drove the 1.2 petrol in GT Line spec with 131PS, fitted with a manual gearbox. Behind the wheel, things feel dynamic, and the weighting of the steering is spot 26 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

on. The car grips bitumen like a cat’s claws cling to flesh, and mid-range pulling power is good, so you can pick up the pace easily. The six-speed transmission is slick shifting, and the car delivers a hushed ride. Tyre roar and wind whistle is kept out of the cabin, too. All this just adds to the 3008’s sense of refinement. The Peugeot offers a composed ride with seats that provide the sort of comfort and support required for long distance motoring. Furthermore, the car’s suspension sops up potholes without complaining. Significantly, the all-new 3008 doesn’t tip into bends. Indeed, body roll is very well contained. This surprised me, as smaller SUVs aren’t always the type of vehicle to stay so unflustered on twisty tarmac. The new 3008 comes in four levels of trim: Active, Allure, GT Line and GT. Factory fitted safety kit includes automatic emergency braking and rear parking sensors. The GT Line hasn’t got any extra safety equipment - just sportier looks. But it has all the safety kit you really need, and as with all 3008s, it has a top five-star Euro NCAP safety score. A car can look great and have all the equipment in the world crammed into it – but it’s no good if it isn’t economical and it doesn’t drive decently. There are no concerns to be had in this area with the

Max speed: 117 mph 0-62 mph: 10.8 secs Combined mpg: 55.4 Engine layout: 1199cc 3-cylinder turbo petrol ➠ Max. power (PS): 131 ➠ CO2: 117 g/km ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠

Price: £25,655 3008 SUV. The 1.2 GT Line’s average fuel consumption of 55.4mpg and 117g/km of CO2 means low running costs, combined with effective performance. 0-62mph is achieved in 10.8 seconds and the Pug’s maximum speed is 117mph. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV’s entry price is £21,795, but expect to fork out £25,655 for the petrol-powered GT Line I drove. A basic Nissan Qashqai costs £18,545, and the new SEAT Ateca is priced from £17,990. But I think the 3008’s extra cost is justified because it feels more upmarket inside than these two rivals. Cabin materials include brushed chrome, large areas of carbon decoration and textiles. They even cover some areas less commonly found in SUVs, such as the dashboard inlay. It’s all very contemporary and attractive. The Peugeot is just as stylish outside, and it drives well, while delivering a comfortable ride for all.
