Welcome to the August issue All I can say is WOW! What an amazing few weeks of weather and football July has given us. We may not have brought the trophy home but we sure know how to celebrate and get behind our team. It has been lovely watching my son start to show an interest in sport, whilst he didn’t really understand what was going on he certainly got caught up in the mood and was shouting ‘goal’ or ‘England’ regularly! We have all been able to enjoy the outdoors with the beautiful weather we have had, I’m not sure the gardens are enjoying it too much as mine currently looks very brown instead of green. All too soon it will change, I’m sure and we’ll be moaning about the cold and rain. Back to the issue in hand….August! It’s the last weeks of the school holidays before we embark on a new term and year for students and teachers alike. There’s still plenty of time to get out and enjoy your break, so make the most of it. In this issue we are looking at eye-care, looking after your ears, we have a seasonal food & drink special with some yummy recipes, our Home & Property feature this month is all about fencing and Tim test drives the Hyundai i30 N.

Tackling Prostate Cancer Together The fight against prostate cancer can take another step forward thanks to more than £143,400 raised for Prostate Cancer UK during a campaign by Lincolnshire Co-op. One in eight men and one in four black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK. The disease takes a life every 45 minutes, and while it’s only men who can develop it, partners, families and friends are also affected. Men’s health charity Prostate Cancer UK is leading the fight against prostate cancer, and by funding vital research into diagnosis and treatment they aim to stop the disease from being a killer. And together with members and colleagues, Lincolnshire Co-op has raised the six-figure sum through its Community

Champions scheme to help bolster the charity’s work. The money was presented to Prostate Cancer UK at Lincolnshire Co-op’s Holbeach Pharmacy, which is part of the Society’s community hub in Fleet Street alongside its Holbeach Food Store, post office and community library. Tamarin Fitzpatrick, Head of Corporate Partnerships at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “Lincolnshire Co-op has exceeded all expectations by raising a phenomenal £143,463 for Prostate Cancer UK. One man dies every 45 minutes from prostate cancer, and it is with support such as this that we can continue to fund vital research to improve diagnosis and treatment of the disease – and also provide support to men and their families who are affected.”

NEWS

The Fishermen’s Mission Launches 100in10 Campaign The Fishermen’s Mission, a well know charity, has launched a campaign this to highlight the number of fishermen lost at sea in the last decade. Called the 100in10 Campaign, they hope to raise awareness of the dangers of being a fisherman and the devastating impact on families and communities when fishermen are lost at sea. They are asking people to buy a pair of yellow fishermen’s wellies (with their logo attached) from them. For every pair that is sold they will be tying a yellow ribbon to the flagpole outside their Head Office in Hampshire. When they have sold 100 pairs these will be used for a photograph that will be released nationally. Local Fishermen’s Mission Port Officer, Supt Suesan Brown says ‘The work of the Fishermen’s Mission is as necessary today as ever. Our vital services and support provides practical, financial and pastoral help to local fishermen, both active and retired, and their families as well as a 24/7

emergency response for accidents or illness at sea. ‘We are the only charity that solely works with fishermen and we will help anyone who works aboard a UK fishing boat. I would urge any fisherman who think that we might be able to help to get in touch on 07710389717 or using boston@fishermensmission.org. uk If you would like to be part of the 100in10 Campaign then you can join in on their website www. fishermensmission.org.uk, email 100in10@fishermensmission. org.uk or call, using Freephone number 0800 6341020

Open Gardens - National Garden Scheme

Who we are and what we do

The National Garden Scheme is the most significant charitable funder of nursing charities in the country, donating over £50 million so far. We help our garden owners open their beautiful gardens to the public, sharing their passion and raising impressive amounts of money through entry fees, teas and slices of cake. Our beneficiary charities are: The Queen’s Nursing Institute, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Carers Trust, Hospice UK, Perennial, Parkinson’s UK and other guest charities.

Our history The National Garden Scheme has a rich and interesting history that is closely connected with nursing in the UK.

1927 - The National Garden Scheme was founded. Individuals were asked to open up their gardens for ‘a shilling a head’. In the first year 609 gardens raised over £8,000. A year later, the district nursing organisation became officially named the Queen’s Nursing Institute.

BOSTON What we do Around 3,700 gardens open each year for the National Garden Scheme, all of our gardens can be found on our website or in our Garden Visitor’s Handbook, published annually. Thanks to the generosity of garden owners, volunteers and visitors, the National Garden Scheme has donated £55 million to charity over the last 90 years. Originally set up to support district nurses, the National Garden Scheme is now the most significant charitable funder of nursing and caring charities in the UK. We also support charities doing amazing work in gardens and health, and we grant awards to help community gardening projects and gardeners at the start of their career. In 2018, we donated a record £3.1 million from funds raised at gardens open in 2017 – almost double the £1.6 million donated ten years ago – and a huge 82p in every £1 fundraised goes straight to our beneficiaries. Read about our charity partnerships below, and find out more about our bursaries and apprenticeships by clicking here.

1931 - By now a network of volunteer County Organisers had been set up and over 1,000 private gardens were open. 1932 - Country Life magazine publishes an illustrated guide - costing one shilling - to 1,079 gardens open for charity, with a green cover and an introduction by its editor, Christopher Hussey. 1948 - After the Second World War, the National Health Service took on the District Nursing Service, but money was still needed to care for retired nurses and invest in training. The National Garden Scheme offered to donate funding to the National Trust to restore and preserve important gardens. In return, the National Trust opened many of its most prestigious gardens for the National Garden Scheme. 1970 - 1,234 gardens open, raising almost £52,000. 1984 - Macmillan Cancer Support joined the list of beneficiary charities.

29 July – Yew Tree Farm, Spalding 5 August – Gunby Hall & Gardens, Spilsby 5 August – Elgoods Brewery Gardens, Wisbech 19 August – Willoughby Road Allotments, Boston 26 August – Manor House, Spilsby 15 September – Inley Drove Farm, Spalding 23 September – Goltho House, Market Rasen

1996 - Marie Curie (formerly Marie Curie Cancer Care), Help the Hospices and Crossroads (now Carers Trust) also became beneficiary charities. 2013 - Parkinson’s UK joins as a ‘guest charity’ of the National Garden Scheme, they go on to become a permanent beneficiary. 2016 - In honour of Frogmore gardens opening for 70 years for the National Garden Scheme, 70 Queen’s Nurses attend the open day in June. 2017 - Our 90th Anniversary. We celebrated with our biggest ever donation amount of £3 million to our beneficiary charities. Including to a new Gardens and Health beneficiary, which for 2017 was The National Autistic Society.

Councillor’s Column r Cllr aaron Spence

Cllr Aaron Spencer, pictured, is Boston Borough Council’s deputy leader and finance portfolio holder. While he is concerned with everything to do with the council’s financial affairs, a responsibility he took on during the toughest times of austerity, he also has charge of “property” and has overseen a remarkable overhaul of one of Boston’s biggest and best-known buildings – the council offices in West Street.

M

unicipal Buildings is an Edwardian building which has been home to the council since it opened in 1904 when the then Boston Corporation moved from the Exchange Buildings in the Market Place. For years it housed not only the council but was also the police station, with cells for unruly prisoners, the fire brigade and the library. It is an imposing building, dominating West Street with a roofline which can be seen from many parts of the town. Because it is Edwardian, although it was solidly built – more solid than we anticipated – it was very spacious, with large offices with high ceilings and expensive to run. Over time the other organisations using the building moved out to their own accommodation, and the borough council was left alone, rattling about in a building far too large. A Transformation plan was drawn up to modernise the building, make it more economic to run and able to generate muchneeded revenue for the council when it has

needed it most. A new-look Municipal Buildings, modernised, future-proofed and fit-forpurpose has now opened to the public following months of refurbishment. The work, which saw contractors having to cut their way through walls that were three feet thick in places and steel-reinforced floors, has seen spacious offices which served very few council staff redesigned as open plan, accommodating more people, often from different departments creating better joinedup working, and creating space for other organisations The Department for Work and Pensions, various Lincolnshire County Council departments including highways, registrars, the probation service and the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, have moved in. The latest to relocate and join us is Lincolnshire Community Voluntary Service. The offices are now state-of-the-art with latest high-tech equipment and connectivity, all available for the public to use.

The revenue generated for the council, as landlord, is generating savings and muchneeded income to that we can continue to balance our budget, despite the cuts and maintain vital services. Single Person Discount Review A review is underway of all residents receiving a 25 per cent single person discount on their council tax. Single Person Discount (SPD) is claimed when an adult is the sole adult occupant of the property. We are aware that while most residents are claiming the discount appropriately there are a minority who are attempting to defraud the system. These residents may not have reported a change in their circumstances and are receiving the discount when they are no longer entitled to it. The Single Person Discount Review will detect those who are claiming a discount that they are no longer eligible for. Residents receiving Single Person Discount will be receiving a letter asking for them to explain their current circumstances. Not only will this be a way of keeping our records up to date it will also be a way of allowing our residents to notify us if there has been a change in their circumstances. If they do not respond to our letter their Single Person Discount will be removed and further investigations may be undertaken. The council is dedicated to protecting the public purse and detecting fraud. We take council tax fraud very seriously so we are very pro-active in confirming all entitlements to discounts.

Mini Police Mini Police is a new primary-school engagement coming to Lincolnshire in September 2018.

M

ini Police is a primary school initiative involving pupils from Years 5 and 6 in primary school (ages 9-11). The aim of the project is to build trust and confidence between the Police and local communities, to teach children responsibilities in a fun and interactive way, and to build better communities. Children in 119 schools across Lincolnshire will have the opportunity to work with Police, and get involved in Policing and community projects. The programme is written around the school curriculum, so they aren’t missing out on education. In March 2017 Lincolnshire Police piloted the project at two primary schools in Boston (Carlton Road Academy and Staniland Academy). In September 2017, Mini Police volunteers from Year 5 were enrolled and they began to engage in projects both within their school and also their local community. Over the following months the Mini Police undertook several tasks including: raising awareness of being safe on the journey to and from school by supplying and fitting cycle lights, litter picking across the local area with Boston Borough Council and Lincs

Housing Partnership, taking part in the Remembrance Parade in Boston with the Police cadets, interviewing Assistant Chief Constable West, learning CPR and first Aid with St Johns Ambulance, bag-packing for a local charity, delivering Scam advice to their community in a local supermarket and also helping to address the issue of parking around schools by designing and producing posters and flyers which they then handed out to parents and pupils. The pilot has been a huge success at both schools, and the decision was made to roll it out to schools across the whole county. In September 2018 a further 117 primary schools will join our pilot schools, with a total of 1006 Mini Police volunteers being elected. The project will be delivered into schools by the Neighbourhood Policing Teams, with each school having a designated Police Community Support Officer (PCSO).

Look After Your Eyes

M

ost of us take our eyesight for granted, but imagine if you couldn’t gaze at your family or even navigate your way safely round the kitchen. There is much you can do to look after your eyes. For example, a well-balanced diet can protect against age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in older people.

Smell your eye make-up - You have probably never thought about bacteria lurking in your mascara and other eye cosmetics

of zeaxanthin and lutein. These vital nutrients help protect against age-related macular degeneration.

Eat sunshine-coloured foods - Make sure your dinner plate contains a splash of yellow or orange. Egg yolks and a wide range of orange or yellow vegetables, including carrots and squash, are good sources

Take a break - If you work long hours in front of a screen in artificial light, you are increasing your chances of becoming short sighted. Take regular short breaks away from the screen and walk around the office to exercise

Lucious Eyebrows Castor Oil - Castor oil is one of the most effective remedies to boost the growth of your eyebrows. It contains protein, vitamins, fatty acids and antioxidants that nourish the hair follicles and promote hair growth. Soak a cotton swab in pure castor oil and apply it on each eyebrow. Massage gently with your fingertips for 2 to 3 minutes. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes or overnight. Wash it off with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser. Repeat once daily for a few weeks until you notice improvement. Olive Oil - Olive oil is also good for your eyebrows. Being rich in vitamin E, olive oil can help your eyebrow hair grow faster and thicker. It will also help keep it darkhued. Massage your eyebrows with warm olive oil for 5 minutes before going to bed.

Leave it on overnight, then rinse it off with warm water the next morning. Alternatively, prepare a mixture with 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil and a few drops of honey. Apply it on your eyebrows and massage for a few minutes. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then wash it off with warm water. Egg Yolk -The hair of the eyebrows is made up of keratin protein, and egg is a great source of protein. Thus, it can help improve the health of your hair, which in turn will make your eyebrows thick. Break 1 egg and separate the yolk from the white part. Beat the yolk until you get a thick, creamy consistency. Apply it on each of your brows with a cotton swab. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash it off with cold water. Use this protein treatment once or twice a week until you are satisfied with the result.

your eyes as well as your legs. Cool your feet - Make sure that the vents that deliver cool air into your car are aimed at your feet rather than at eye level. Specialists warn that the dry air from car air-conditioning systems sucks moisture out of your eyes, which can cause discomfort and put you at greater risk of eye infections and even ulcers.

Get Your Senses Checked Out

T

here is no embarrassment, or shame attached to visiting an optician, or the dentist, at least once a year, even though the latter can be terrifying for some people, so why do we rarely consider having a regular hearing test? The tests are often free of charge, painless and more informative of your overall state of health than you might contemplate. Your ears, unlike teeth and eyes will rarely give you much trouble apart from an occasional annoying ‘blockage’ usually caused by a buildup of earwax, will often endure the slowly diminishing quality of hearing loss without detection. It is so easy to compensate by turning up the volume of the TV, or radio, or stereo, or alarm-clock, even resorting to ‘reading people’s lips’, when listening to speech becomes impaired. So, what’s stopping you? Many opticians offer an additional hearing check service so get booked in today! www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 15

ugust – shorts, sundresses and swimming costumes; I’m breaking out in a cold sweat just thinking about it! This month I would like to talk about our postnatal bodies. Lumpy, bumpy, stretch mark riddled, baggy, saggy, flappy – you name it, I am sure everyone of you has looked in the mirror post-birth and wondered quite what happened? We hear about celebrities ‘snapping back’ after birth and although we don’t expect that to happen for us (unless we have personal trainers and chefs), neither do we expect the stubborn, lingering wobbly bits that we don’t recognise as ourselves. We live in a society where to feel beautiful we have to feel desired. The problem with that is, when we rely on other people to feel secure and happy in ourselves, our happiness is not our own but that of other people’s opinion. And that is not a great place to be, physically or mentally. So why don’t we love ourselves? On the whole, women are very disconnected from their bodies. Pre-pregnancy, few take the time to get to know themselves or are in tune with their cycles or hormones. We buy into the social and industry standards of beauty. If we have a flat stomach and ‘perky’ breasts we feel good about ourselves and are thankful we have things about our physical appearance we like. It’s only during or after pregnancy when things start or stop working how they did before that most women take more of an interest or find the courage to really see themselves – and what

they see staring back is not always a welcome image. For some women it’s not until menopause that they really come to be friends with the body they have. Explore ladies – get to know all your perfectly imperfect nooks and crannies! Don’t let the image you have of yourself in your head or see in the mirror take away from the amazing human being you are. Especially not after childbirth. We hold on to so many social constraints of how we should look, feel, smell. As a woman, you hold the power to the Universe. Can you imagine how different the world would be if women woke up one day and decided they loved themselves unconditionally? Fashion, beauty, the diet industry to name but 3 would all fade away and our daughters and granddaughters wouldn’t have artificial points of reference upon which to build their self-esteem. I think where I am going with this is ‘enjoy your body’. Use it every which way you can. Don’t be afraid of it or what other people think of it. There is nothing more rare or more beautiful than a woman being unapologetically herself; comfortable in her perfect imperfection. Self confidence comes from within, and that’s about changing your mental attitude not your waistline. Believe in yourself enough to never look back and wish you’d spent more time being unafraid.

The Moss Man The Moss Man has been operating in the Skegness and Louth areas for over three years now and has built up a large customer base. With our newest operator, Adam, we now cover Boston, Woodhall Spa and Spilsby areas. We are based in Sloothby near Skegness, Lincolnshire. Through being in the building trade for many years we realised that keeping block paving weed and moss free is a real problem. For years pressure washing has been the only real option, although a wire brush with a long handle is also useful if you have the time. Neither of these options kill the weeds or moss however, they simply remove the top greenery. In the case of the weeds it leaves the roots intact ready for regrowth and in the case of the moss any spores left behind have a nice damp environment to thrive. Pressure washing can also remove the sand which the blocks are laid on making your blocks drop and causing untold damage to your driveway which, in turn, could lead to having it re-laid. We kill the weeds and treat the moss and

algae. We make sure the weeds have been killed at the root before brushing all the debris from between the block work. After all debris is removed we treat the surface to remove any algae left on the blocks. This will keep the surface of your blocks clean. We then re-treat the block paving every three months to help control the regrowth. As I’m sure you’re aware unless the blocks are maintained the weeds and moss will keep returning. We clean your drive from only £99.00. then going forward we maintain it from only £29.99 every three months. It’s cheaper than getting your windows cleaned. We are now also treating roofs without standing on them or upsetting your neighbours. If you’ve got a new roof or driveway or have recently had them cleaned, don’t let them get back to their old state

again. Let us maintain that fresh look so you don’t have to worry. We are fully qualified and insured for your piece of mind. If your roof or drive is green and you want it clean call the Moss Man for an eco-friendly gleam! Call 01754 761606 for a quote today or email adam@themossman.co.uk

Butlin’s Skegness At some 160 acres and more than 80 years old, Butlin’s Skegness is the biggest and oldest of the brands three seaside resorts – and the team working at Skegness would say it’s the best too! Just north of the town of Skegness in Ingoldmells, the resort was the first opened by Sir Billy Butlin in 1936 – his vision of guests having their own accommodation with entertainment, swimming, fairground and dining all for one price revolutionised the British seaside holiday. At a cost of some £100,000, the Skegness resort originally catered for 1,000 people with 600 chalets that had the benefits of electricity and running water – luxuries for holiday accommodation in the 30s! During World War II, the camp was subject to a short military occupation when it served as a Naval training base and became known as HMS Royal Arthur – it reverted back to being a holiday resort in 1946. Continued investment and growth now means the Skegness resort of 2018 caters

for more than 500,000 guests each year and is operational for 50 weeks of the year. So, what can day visitors to Butlin’s Skegness enjoy? Two of the key elements of Sir Billy’s original plan – swimming and a traditional fairground – are still at the heart of the resort today. The Splash Waterworld at Skegness is currently the newest of any of the resorts, having been totally refurbished and extended in 2013. With flumes, splash pools, special sections for families and younger swimmers and an outdoor fountain area for those hot summer days, Splash Waterworld is always hugely popular with guests of all ages. The traditional fairground is clearly visible as you drive into the resort, and rides such as the carousel and the waltzer allow youngsters and their parents to share great fun times together. Of course, every Butlin’s fairground includes dodgem cars – Sir Billy Butlins first brought them to the UK in the

There is plenty more for day visitors to enjoy: a good tip is to head for the Skyline Pavilion at the heart of the resort, where shows featuring the likes of the Teletubbies, Mr Men Little Miss and Butlin’s own Skyline Gang will delight the youngsters. With an ice cream parlour, restaurants and bars, a day visit to Butlin’s Skegness has got everything covered – and remember, it’s even got its own very sandy beach!

De-stressing

in th e modern world

It’s no secret that spas have been around since the beginning of time. Originally only for the affluent who would travel the world in search of hot or cold springs to cure their ailments. Water springs, which are synonymous with rebirth and rejuvenation, soon became the spot where people would cleanse and purify their bodies. Nowadays spas are a place that we go to rejuvenate, unwind and de-stress. The concept behind them has remained the same but nowadays you don’t have to travel, you can just install a spa at home! Pools and enclosures If you’re considering installing or building a pool, Oasis offer the complete project management service from soil surveys, technical drawings, the actual build, finishes and enclosure erection. Choices of pools include the one piece fibre-glass pool, panel pools which are labour saving, block and liner or above ground wooden pools, details and images of which can be found on their website. Experts in pool maintenance Covering the Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Rutland area, Oasis Pools and Spas offer a complete maintenance, refurbishment and backup service bespoke to each client. So whether you require an overhaul of your filtration system, a replacement liner, new pool cover or just looking to winterize your pool then get in touch, the experts are at hand!

Wet your appetite for well-being Whether you’re considering a spa for the enormous health benefits or just looking to bring the feel of luxury to your garden where you relax, socialise, listen to music and enjoy sunsets, Oasis Pools and Spas can turn your dream into reality. This well-established, local family run business with over 25years of experience, provides expert advice on Spa and Pool purchases and aftercare.

The benefits to your health and well-being: • Minimise the pain of arthritis • Lower diabetic blood sugar levels • Lowers blood pressure • Promotes weight loss • Sleep more soundly Add value to your property Hot tubs are an investment that can potentially add value to your property. Having a hot tub retreat can be a major selling point especially when combined with attractive landscaping. Building around the spa as a fixture makes it feel more permanent while helping it blend into its surroundings in a more visually appealing way – for instance, building a deck around the hot tub, making a patio/pad specifically designed for hot tub specs or by adding a pergola or gazebo to the space. The appearance and condition of the hot tub itself plays a part. Presenting a clean and well maintained spa is sure to make a difference when it comes to attracting the interest of future home buyers.

Your Oasis is our Oasis There are a host of choices to consider that will give you an exceptional customised experience, like Bluetooth, LED illumination, the sound of comforting waterfalls and aromatherapy. Hot tubs available range from £3,450 - £20,000 from the robust, affordable Rotospa to 2018 Best Buy family spas and SwimSpas. All spas come with a free chemical starter kit and many come with steps and covers too, all delivered at no additional cost! Other important factors to consider are access and portability, but don’t let this put you off as Oasis Pools and Spas will come and survey the site in advance...it’s all part of the service they offer! Couple that with the ongoing excellent advice you’ll receive, you can rest assured you’ll be in safe hands... It doesn’t stop there either as their showroom boasts a wide range of chemicals and water treatments, a variety of filters and a host of accessories from inflatable toys, booster seats, headrests, drink holders, Spabombs and essential oils...the best in the area by far!

Home & Property

Fencing Your Boundary! Choosing a good fence is important to the exterior design of your house and its functionality as well. One of the main reasons why people put up fences is for privacy although there are many other factors as well. The privacy factor is also crucial to the kind of fence that you choose. Here is a simple guide to the different types of fences: Aluminium fences Aluminium fencing is quite popular and inexpensive. It can be designed to look just like most of the other fencing material. However, aluminuim is not very strong and does not provide enough security as you may look for in a fence. It is not recommended for use in severe weather. On the plus side, aluminium is very easy to maintain. Wood fences Wood is one of the oldest fencing materials and has stood the test of time due to its aesthetics, durability and great functionality. It still remains one the most popular types of fencing because of the amount of privacy it provides with its wide panels and great height. It is very attractive since it can be carved and painted into any of a variety of colours. Wood fencing

has a warm and welcoming feeling without being too expensive. With good maintenance, wood fencing can easily last as long as the lifespan of your home. Wrought iron fence Wrought iron fences are great if you want some funky designs on top of your fence. Wrought iron is a strong and beautiful fencing material. They are great as a security measure since they are virtually indestructible. Wrought iron fencing have only one disadvantage, like wood fencing, they also require constant upkeep to prevent discoloration and rusting. You will need to repaint your fences at least once every two or three years. Chain link fences Although they do not add much

privacy, chain link fencing is one of the functional fencing material out there. Chain link fences are very popular in applications where functionality overrules aesthetics, although they are easy on the eye too. Chain link is cheap, durable, easy to maintain and repair and suitable in a variety of applications such as pet enclosures, park enclosures, pool enclosures, school and playground fencing among many other functions. Secure Your Home during the Holidays With schools now broken up we are in the midst of a summer of fun. However, it’s unfortunately also a fruitful period for burglars and opportunist thieves. If you are planning to be away during the summer before you leave

just double check that all keys and valuables are well hidden from sight, and leave a few lamps on timers so that when night falls it will look like you’re home, deterring any potential thieves who prey on empty properties over this busy social weekend. If you already have an intruder alarm, remember to let a trustworthy neighbour know that you’re away and if the alarm goes off to call you or a family member whom you might have left your key with. You may be close to your neighbour, like many of us are, and then feel safe to leave a spare key with them ‘just in case’. If you don’t feel like you have a neighbour whom you can trust, then you might want to consider an alarm monitoring service, whereby a professional security provider will monitor your alarm.

Hyundai i30N 2.0 T-GDi 275PS N Performance PROS ‘N’ CONS

FAST FACTS

(2.0 T-GDi 275PS N Performance – as tested)

S

South Korean motoring giant, Hyundai, has created a brand new ‘N Division’, which has sparked the awesome new i30 N. The regular variant gets a 251PS petrol turbo unit, but it’s the 275PS Performance Package i30 N that I was handed the keys to. This car gets bigger brakes to scrub the extra speed off. At the front of the model, there’s also a no-nonsense electronic differential, which decides all sorts of smart things to keep the front wheels biting into the bitumen. The i30 N’s chassis is electronically damped - and the arrangement has been designed to supply all-out precision. At the same time, the system doles out a good dose of refinement, meaning comfort is not in short supply. What’s more, the car has state-of-the-art electronic dampers at each corner that empower it to do things some other challengers can’t even consider - both on tarmac and on track. The i30 N also belts out a banging tune of its own. Seriously, the car sounds incredible. And when the pedal is pushed to the metal in third gear, all sorts of crackles and pops fire from the tailpipes. What’s most extraordinary, however, is how the i30 N handles, turns and comes to a halt. The steering is outstandingly precise, and the car doesn’t feel edgy at the rear whatsoever. This is some feat, considering that it takes the Hyundai a mere 2.2 turns from lock to lock. The handling is unreservedly razor-sharp,

even in ‘Normal’ setting. Things get spicier in ‘Sport’ mode, and there’s a ‘Custom’ choice in which you can alter the car’s specific characteristics. The i30 N also has, perhaps unsurprisingly, an ‘N’ mode. This is only meant for using on a track really, so the ride quality is stiff and hard-nosed. But if you’re in the right frame of mind and the weather and road conditions are okay, then it is a grin-inducing system. The throttle map and exhaust become zestier, while the dampers become more unyielding. Furthermore, any interruption from the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) is played right down. Out and out performance is heavy-duty from the 2.0-litre petrol turbo powerplant in all settings. It never feels too much, though - and the sixspeed manual transmission hops through the cogs satisfyingly. The hot Hyundai’s straight-line talent is blisteringly impressive, but it is the i30 N’s chassis that blows you away. This is the feature that remains indelibly etched on my mind. It’s my ‘take-away’ memory of the car if you like. Sure, this isn’t the fastest hatchback ever made – but the point is, not many cars in this segment will have such an excellent chassis set-up. And, here’s the occasionally thorny bit – the price. Well, with this Hyundai there

Max speed: 155 mph 0-62 mph: 6.1 secs (est) Combined mpg: 39.8 Engine layout: 1898cc four-cylinder petrol turbo à Max. power (PS): 275 à CO2: 163 g/km à à à à

is no issue. The South Korean firm knew it had to chip away at the main competition to give itself authority in the hot-hatch market. Therefore, an on-the-road price-tag of £27,995 is more than respectable, bearing in mind how capable the 2.0 T-GDi 275PS N Performance is behind the wheel. Moreover, the car is jam-packed with kit, and it feels well screwed together.
