Welcome to the April issue

contents

Fingers crossed we have seen the last of ‘The Beast from the East’! What a month we’ve had weatherwise, snow, sun, showers, we’ve had it all. In the office we have had a month of celebrations, Sarah has had a big birthday and has certainly been extending it to it’s full potential! And, our sister publication, Simply Spalding, is celebrating its tenth anniversary. At home we are all about the parties, our daughter is being Christened and our son will be celebrating his birthday soon. In maybe a slightly naïve and over ambitious decision making mood I decided to look after the catering of the Christening myself so all I have done is bake, bake, bake! In this issue we are looking at the annual Boston MayFair where the town centre will be completely taken over by a wide variety of fairground attractions, including thrill rides, children’s rides and food stalls. We catch up with The Chapmans on the final leg of their world tour and Tim is test driving the new Skoda. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue!

Crackdown planned on those who contaminate blue bin collections Despite extensive public information campaigns, recycling rates have been tumbling across the nation. In Boston one of the biggest issues has been contamination of recycling collections by rubbish which should have been put in the green bin. Concerns have been expressed that continued contamination by those who fail to recycle correctly could jeopardise the current collection arrangement in Boston. Boston borough’s recycled waste collection accepts mingled waste – all recyclable items placed in one bin. But with contamination, by such things as used nappies and food waste, now running at 35 per cent, one-bin recycling could be at risk. On one recycling collection round 160 contaminated blue bins were recorded. The borough could be in the same position as some other council areas with numerous bins for different types of waste. And that would hit everyone in the pocket. Dealing with contamination in the recycling collection costs everybody more money and impacts the environment as material cannot be recovered for recycling. On Wednesday (February 21) Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet agreed to the introduction of £75 fixed penalty fines after advice and a warning

for those who continue to contaminate their blue bin collection. Portfolio holder for waste services, Cllr Michael Brookes, said: We co-mingle, which saves money, but if we fail regulations we may have to undertake more expensive collection methods.” He said there would be a campaign to inform everyone in the borough about what can and cannot go into their blue bins and regular offenders would receive advice when their collection was contaminated, followed by a further warning before receiving a £75 fine. “This is not to penalise people who make an honest mistake but to penalise those who just don’t care, wilfully continue and just won’t conform.” Cllr Nigel Welton raised a concern about people who had no secure place to keep their bins, where they might be contaminated by a third party. He was told the fixed penalties will be served by the council’s third-party enforcement agency 3GS, but they will only be served with authority from the council. It was stressed that the council would not make any money from the new enforcement measures. Cllr Welton said: “It’s important that residents know this is not to make money but ways for the council to clean up the town.”

Big Boston Clean Up Litter is a concern to many. There has never been a time when people have been more concerned about the environment. An annual opportunity to get involved in doing something about it is coming around again with the Big Boston Clean Up. For four days, from Monday, April 9, to Thursday, April 12, you can be part of the clean-up team helping make a difference in Boston. “Every year we have a small army of volunteers who turn out to help. It always becomes a real social event, with family members, friends and work colleagues

teaming up, often to work at cleaning up the areas where they live,” said Jen Moore, Boston Borough Council’s environment and sustainability officer. Many businesses and partner agencies such as the Environment Agency and the internal drainage boards support the event, helping clean the streets and waterways. Volunteers meet each morning at 9am at the council offices at Municipal Buildings, West Street, and are equipped for the day with collection sacks, mechanical litter pickers, gloves and highvisibility safety vests and given their areas

to work in. All volunteers get a free lunch. ASDA and Freshtime have been thanked for agreeing to sponsor this year’s event. If you want to get involved please contact Jen on 01205 314583 or pop into Municipal Buildings for a pledge form or download one from www.boston.gov.uk/ cleanup2018 During March the primary schools in Boston get involved in the Big Schools Clean Up clearing in and around their school grounds. So far Hawthorn Tree, Carlton Road and Boston West have been out litter picking in their local areas.

Litter pickers from Hawthorn Tree School who had a message for dog walkers in their area: “Please put your black bags in the bin when you have cleaned up after your dog.”

take a tough line where the bad behaviour of some impacts on the lives of others. People have a right to live in peace and safety and to go about their business without interference or intimidation. No sane person would say that’s unreasonable, and that’s why we have a raft of laws, rules and regulations to deal with those whose behaviour would impinge on the enjoyment of others. Anti-social behaviour is the popular label used to describe the undesirable actions of those determined not to live their lives according to the rules designed to ensure we can all just get along. The rules are not draconian, but it’s the job of a number of organisations including the council to use available powers when necessary to pull into line anyone stepping seriously out of line. One of the biggest concerns raised consistently by some residents is anti-social behaviour fuelled by alcohol. Some can feel intimidated by the presence of people drinking alcohol in the street even though their behaviour may not at that point be deemed to be anti-social. Other anti-social elements accompanying these types of activity include alcohol-related street litter. We were among the very first councils in the country to use new laws as soon as they were ratified by central Government to control street drinking by declaring the town centre to be subject to a Public Space Protection Order. We have also been among the first to use anti-social behaviour legislation to take persistent

C llr Paul Skinner is Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for regulatory services such as building control, licensing and land charges, community safety, health and safety, climate change and health and wellbeing. He is well-placed for these. He has had an international career as a chartered engineer, specialising in agricultural machinery (15 years an innovation and sustainability judge at the LAMMA agricultural and machinery show) and theme park thrill rides with a firm focus on public safety and has worked on safety aspects of the Volvo Ocean Race and Land Rover testing. He is a keen walker, with his constant companion Ted (his dog), cyclist and canoeist – he is chairman of Boston Canoe Club. In May he will become Boston Mayor’s consort when his wife, Cllr Judith Skinner, becomes Boston’s 484th Mayor. street drinkers to court. As a council we have in our armoury a small community safety team, with anti-social behaviour case officers. But they cannot possibly be everywhere all the time. They are backed up by the council’s CCTV cameras and recording system, which is also used by the police for evidential purposes. While we do our best to keep the peace for everyone we do need the support of the public. We work closely with the police, so if you spot an incident of anti-social behaviour please report it as quickly as you can to the police using their 101 phone number. Because of their operational needs the police may not always be able to attend immediately, but by reporting these issues a picture builds up of areas which require extra attention. Town centre cleanliness is another issue which concerns all of us. Litter takes many forms – drinks cans, fast food containers, cigarette ends and dog mess. They all have a negative impact on the way we feel about our town and the people we share the space with. It’s a sad fact that councils up and down the land have been battling the scourge of litter for decades with campaigns ranging from softlysoftly educational approaches through to threats of heavy fines. It is an offence not to clean up after your dog, but the council was again among the first in the country to go a step further and use legislation making it an offence punishable with a fine if anyone walking a dog failed to demonstrate

they were equipped to clean up after their pet. It’s not rocket science – if you take the dog out for a walk put some dog poo bags in your pockets, because you know a dog will do what a dog needs to do. It makes me sad, and angry, to think that there will always be some who will wilfully litter the places where they live, shop and work. In a response to calls for the council to do all it can to clean up after those who won’t we have joined with partners BTAC (Boston Town Area Committee) and Boston Big Local to fund a number of initiatives. The town centre maintenance team has been increased from one to three. They have wide-ranging skills and experience which include bricklaying, caretaking, grounds and vehicle maintenance. They will also help with an expansion of town centre community events, so that we can all enjoy more the opportunities for family fun and entertainment afforded by amenities such as Central Park and the pedestrianised area of the Market Place. So far as the environment is concerned we are all in it together, so I’d encourage as many as possible to help with this year’s Big Boston Clean Up from Monday, April 9 to Thursday, April 12. It’s an annual opportunity for you to get out with family and friends and make a big difference to our town. There will be a free lunch for all volunteers and each day’s clean-up starts at 9am from the council offices at Municipal Buildings in West Street. Contact Jen Moore on 01205 314583 to get involved.

Advice

A new financial year: a new financial you? 6 April is a key day in each year as it signals the start of the new fiscal year for tax purposes. There are lots of things to think about to make sure that are making the most of the money that you have; here are some areas that you may wish to review and ideas where you may be able to get some guidance and support. Debts: Our experience at Citizens Advice tells us that many people believe that they are managing their debts - until it is too late! The best advice that we can give is to take some advice as early as you can if your debts are a problem. How can you spot a problem? • Are you borrowing more money to pay off previous debts that you were struggling to repay? • Do you sometimes worry how you will pay your bills and living costs and keep up payments? Remember, debts include many things that you may not think that you have “borrowed”, items such as rent, council tax, energy and credit card bills. Bank accounts: When did you last check to see if there may be a better deal out there for you? So many banks will now pay you to transfer your account to them or give you another account that is better suited to your needs (e.g. a current account that pays reasonable interest on your everyday money) and sometimes even pay you for the privilege! Many people resist changing accounts as they think that it will be too much hassle and things may go wrong. Many banks now offer account move “guarantees” that should mean that everything (including direct debits and standing

orders) is sorted for you within a set period. Whatever you decide, just take some time to actually ask your bank what it is doing for you with the account/s that you have - can they do better?

One key aspect for those who rent their property, the landlord may have a buildings cover policy in place but invariably the contents cover (all of your items and possessions) is down to you. Please don’t overlook this.

Energy bills: This will be a big slice of most people’s household income so it makes good sense to look at what may be out there and consider switching your energy supplier. This is where we have regularly seen people saving up to £300 per year - can you afford to turn that down? Switching gets ever easier and Citizens Advice has its own independent site that gives all of your options and costs (the actual switch isn’t available on our site) - go, what can you lose? One other piece of advice, don’t just rely on the estimated readings on your energy bills (it will say on your bill whether it is actual or estimated) but make sure that you get an actual reading to your energy provider at least once per year.

Maximising your income: What does this mean? From our experience many people are actually eligible for support from the welfare benefits system (including state pensions and pension tax credit) and either don’t claim (countywide Citizens Advice offices secured over £7 million in unclaimed benefits for Lincolnshire people last year!) or have claimed and been turned down and haven’t taken their claim any further. We can help! The above areas are not exhaustive and may not apply to you; other areas might! To help you and give advice on what you can do is one of our core services so please, don’t delay if any of the areas above impact on you or anyone that you know. Of course, there are many other areas that we can offer advice on - we won’t be able to help if we don’t hear from you! Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire is a locally managed and funded charity that is there to support the people and communities of Boston Borough and North Kesteven. We wouldn’t be able to continue without funding from your district, county, town and parish councils and other generous funders that support our advice delivery. 80% of our advice is given by our brilliant volunteers but we always need more of them! Please contact one of our offices, the email address or call on Adviceline if you would like to see how you can volunteer and help us do even more. See you next month………...

Insurances: Yes, we’ve all seen the (relatively) cute and also annoying advertisements on television but reviewing your annual insurances such as car, house (buildings and contents) and travel insurance can save you a whole heap of money. It’s also good practice to look at what the insurances actually offer you as well. For instance if you go to Europe in your car on holiday, some insurers have stopped giving European cover as part of their quoted policies (it can be bought at an additional cost). Please check that what you eventually buy actually meets exactly what you need and also, crucially, what you thought you were buying.

School News

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk

Kirton Primary School W

e have recently received the following letter of congratulations from Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP. “Your school’s key stage 2 results, as published on 14 December, show progress scores of 4, 7.3 and 4.9 in English reading, writing and mathematicsrespectively. This means that your school is amongst the top 2% of schools in England in terms of the progress your pupils make between key stage 1 and the end of key stage 2. We want to ensure that every child has the necessary fluency in reading, writing and mathematics to prepare them for a successful secondary education and beyond, and your school has provided this. Thank you for your hard work and professionalism in producing such high standards and congratulations again to you and your staff for all you have achieved.”

Boston College B

oston College students had a day out of the classroom to get hands on with the world’s only semi-synthetic human cadaver dissection. The VIVIT experience was a fantastic opportunity, which gave the students a chance to get hands on and see the dissection of the human anatomy. The VIVIT experience was hosted at Boston College’s Peter Paine Performance Centre and delivered by clinically trained and highly qualified presenters giving students a journey through the human body like never seen before. Split into sessions, more than 100 students from both Boston Grammar School and Boston High School participated alongside Boston College’s Health and Social Care, Science and Sport learners in discovering more about the body we live in. The core programme of the experience was developed to meet the requirements set by national examining bodies and covered a variety of areas including the human anatomy, the cranial cavity and abdominal cavity. Using the anatomy of a spent swine, which is identical in size and shape to that of a human, the experience is as close to the real thing as many of the learners will get. The day incorporated a variety of exciting

demonstrations and hands on practical sessions all backed up by theory and discussions on real life cases. One of Boston College’s Level 3 Medical Science learners, Annalise Boothby, who has a keen interest in studying the human body said, “This experience has definitely helped with my studies. It has been very insightful and has been a great opportunity to further develop my knowledge of the human anatomy. Getting hands on and

seeing everything in person has helped so much more than just looking at images on paper and learning the theory.” Boston College’s Programme Area Manager for Science and Animal Care, Vicky Booth, said “It has been a very positive learning experience. The learners enjoyed finding out how the body works with a more hands on approach and it was a unique way of linking the theory from the classroom to a practical situation.”

Adult Book Choice Zealot’s Bones by D M Mark David Mark’s first historical crime novel is a gripping read. Set in Hull in 1849, a cholera outbreak is devastating the population. In the midst of this plague, young women are being brutally murdered. The local constabulary is keen to keep the murders quiet; they have enough on their plates. Along comes, Mesach Stone, a ravaged and tormented ex-major in the British army. He has been hired as bodyguard by a Canadian academic hunting for the bones of the apostle Simon the Zealot, rumoured to lie somewhere in Lincolnshire. Stone can’t see why ancient bones are of interest in a world full of death - but then a woman he briefly loved is murdered. As he investigates he realises that she is just one of many - and that some deaths cry out for vengeance.

Dr Who meets Mr Men The Tooth Fairy helps the Easter Bunny hide eggs inside wellington boots, under logs and inside a wheelbarrow. All is set for the Easter egg hunt until one of the children loses her wobbly tooth! Will the Tooth Fairy come to the rescue? Children young and old will enjoy this rhyming seasonal tale.

Who will be this year’s Boston May Fair golden ticket winner? The Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain has a unique golden ticket available, giving one lucky person free rides on any ride they fancy, for as many times as they want, for the whole duration of the May Fair in Boston. “It’s a great prize to win,” said Keith James, Chairman of the Derby, Notts, Mid and South Lincs Section of the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain. “It’s totally unique to Boston May Fair. The showmen love giving it away.” This year’s winner will also be part of the special May Fair proclamation, receiving their ticket from the Mayor and a representative from the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain, at noon on Saturday, May 5. Hope Spooner (7), from Boston, was last year’s golden ticket winner to ride for free at Boston May Fair 2017. The fair will open for business in the Market Place in Boston at noon on Sat 5th May 2018. The May Fair is an event all the family can enjoy. Young and older enjoy the rides and the other attractions. Boston’s town centre will be completely taken over by a wide variety of fairground attractions, including thrill rides, children’s rides and food stalls from Saturday, May 5, until Saturday, May 12. It will be open from noon to 11pm on the first Saturday, and from 11am to 10.30pm on every other

day except for the Friday, when it will be open from 11am to 11pm and on the Sunday when it will be open from 1.30pm to 9pm. Some of the bigger rides will only be available from 5pm. The civic proclamation ceremony is attended by VIP guests including mayors and mayoresses from neighbouring authorities and representatives of the Showmen’s Guild. They will then enjoy themselves on the rides - usually doing battle on the dodgems. The fair is rated as being in the top five street fairs in the country. Families of showmen have been coming to Boston for generations, occupying the same pitches with their rides and stalls, which are jealously guarded. It dates back to at least 1125 when it was one of the great trading fairs of medieval times. Merchants came from all over Europe to buy and sell at the Boston fair. Over time the nature of the fair has changed to entertainment. The event has a Royal Charter and is surrounded by tradition and ceremony and is rated as being in the top five street fairs in the country.

To be in with a chance of winning the golden ticket simply fill in the coupon and send to Communications, Boston Borough Council, Municipal Buildings, West Street, Boston PE21 8QR, or email your name, age, address and a daytime phone number to mayfair@boston.gov.uk Deadline for entries is Friday, April 20. *ride restrictions still apply

Focus on

Skegness

The town is popularly known as Skeg, Skeggy, Costa del Skeg, Skegvegas, or “the Blackpool of the East Coast”,[citation needed] and has a famous mascot, the Jolly Fisherman (designed by John

Hassall in 1908 for the Great Northern Railway), and a slogan - “Skegness is so bracing” - a reference to the chilly prevailing north-easterly winds that can and frequently do blow off the North Sea.

The Moss Man The Moss Man has been operating in the Skegness and Louth areas for over three years now and has built up a large customer base. We are based in Sloothby near Skegness, Lincolnshire. Through being in the building trade for many years we realised that keeping block paving weed and moss free is a real problem. For years pressure washing has been the only real option, although a wire brush with a long handle is also useful if you have the time. Neither of these options kill the weeds or moss however, they simply remove the green. In the case of the weeds it leaves the roots intact ready for regrowth and in the case of the moss any spores left behind have a nice damp environment to thrive. Pressure washing can also remove the sand which the blocks are laid on making your blocks drop and causing untold damage to your driveway which, in turn, could lead to having it

relaid. We kill the weeds and treat the moss and algae. We make sure the weeds have been killed at the root before brushing all the debris from between the block work. After all debris is removed we treat the surface to remove any algae left on the blocks. This will keep the surface of your blocks clean. We then re-treat the block paving every three months to help control the regrowth. As I’m sure you’re aware unless the blocks are maintained the weeds and moss will keep returning. We clean your drive from only £99.00. then going forward we maintain it from only £29.99 every three months. It’s cheaper than getting your windows cleaned. We are now also treating roofs without standing on them or upsetting your neighbours.

We are fully qualified and insured for your piece of mind. If your roof or drive is green and you want it clean call the Moss Man for an eco-friendly gleam! Call 01754 761606 for a quote today or email adam@themossman.co.uk

THE MOSSMAN 1-2LC

In March 2005, Skegness took the top spot in a survey by Yours magazine, looking at the best retirement places in the UK. Yours researchers visited sixty likely towns. The factors involved in

judging included house prices, hospital waiting lists, the crime rate, council tax rates, activities and attractions, weather patterns and ease of transport.[14] Skegness has also been described by

Lonely Planet’s Great Britain guide as “everything you could want” in a seaside resort. Next time you fancy a trip to the seaside make sure you head to Skeg!

Butlin’s Skegness At some 160 acres and more than 80 years old, Butlin’s Skegness is the biggest and oldest of the brands three seaside resorts – and the team working at Skegness would say it’s the best too! Just north of the town of Skegness in Ingoldmells, the resort was the first opened by Sir Billy Butlin in 1936 – his vision of guests having their own accommodation with entertainment, swimming, fairground and dining all for one price revolutionised the British seaside holiday. At a cost of some £100,000, the Skegness resort originally catered for 1,000 people with 600 chalets that had the benefits of electricity and running water – luxuries for holiday accommodation in the 30s! During World War II, the camp was subject to a short military occupation when it served as a Naval training base and became

known as HMS Royal Arthur – it reverted back to being a holiday resort in 1946. Continued investment and growth now means the Skegness resort of 2018 caters for more than 500,000 guests each year and is operational for 50 weeks of the year. So, what can day visitors to Butlin’s Skegness enjoy? Two of the key elements of Sir Billy’s original plan – swimming and a traditional fairground – are still at the heart of the resort today. The Splash Waterworld at Skegness is currently the newest of any of the resorts, having been totally refurbished and extended in 2013. With flumes, splash pools, special sections for families and younger swimmers and an outdoor fountain area for those hot summer days, Splash Waterworld is always hugely popular with guests of all

ages. The traditional fairground is clearly visible as you drive into the resort, and rides such as the carousel and the waltzer allow youngsters and their parents to share great fun times together. Of course, every Butlin’s fairground includes dodgem cars – Sir Billy Butlins first brought them to the UK in the 30s – and guests can still enjoy the fun of this fairground classic today. There is plenty more for day visitors to enjoy: a good tip is to head for the Skyline Pavilion at the heart of the resort, where shows featuring the likes of the Teletubbies, Mr Men Little Miss and Butlin’s own Skyline Gang will delight the youngsters. With an ice cream parlour, restaurants and bars, a day visit to Butlin’s Skegness has got everything covered – and remember, it’s even got its own very sandy beach!

Follow Your Dreams

Here’s the final instalment of the Chapman family’s round the world trip.Nigel, Louise and son Kian (8) left Spalding last September and took in the west coast of America, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Nigel tells Simply about the final leg - and what being back in England feels like...

T

hailand’s capital city was our entry point to the final country in our fivemonth adventure. Bangkok by day feels slightly chaotic and never less than 100mph. The river boat taxis are a perfect example. They zoom along the waterways with stops so brief that those passengers who are not fully prepared to hop on or off right away risk doing the splits

between the boat and the jetty as it sets off again! However, the traditional way to see the city is via a tuk tuk, a motorised bike with the capacity to carry passengers in an open-air “hutch” on the back. The maximum number of people seemed to fluctuate as did the cost which often took some negotiating down. But the feeling of whizzing through the warm air of the streets was great, even with the odd hairy moment as the numerous other vehicles elbow their way into position. Jim Thompson House Museum was a highlight for us. The American is credited with turning the Thai silk trade into the booming business it still is today, 51 years after his

On a small Thai island, the sun sets bringing our five-mo nth adventure abroad to an end disappearance in Malaysia. It was lovely too to catch a glimpse of the photographs being taken after a wedding ceremony held there. Much further north in Thailand is its second city, the walled Chiang Mai. Astonishingly, there are more than 300 Buddhist temples inside the city walls and we took the opportunity to learn more about some of them during a three-hour bike ride tour with Grasshopper Adventures. Our guide led us through a warren of streets and took us to a variety of market stalls where we were able to try local fruits and drinks. Even better was our day trip to Karen Habitat, an elephant sanctuary in the Mae Wang area, south-west of Chiang Mai. The operator is educating local elephant owners to not use the animals for unethical means, such as riding, logging and as tourist attractions in the street. Elephants are brought to live at the habitat and visitors can help feed, bathe them in mud and wash them down in the river. This way the owner can still earn an income from their asset in a much more natural environment. It was a truly unique and amazing experience to be

alongside these wonderful creatures. At one point we were on a narrow path on the hillside when one of the two adults sauntered by us so closely that we could have breathed on it (if we hadn’t been holding our breath). A day that was definitely one of the highlights of the whole trip for us. Equally memorable - albeit on a different scale - was the overnight train back to Bangkok for an onward flight to Krabi, at the southern end of the country. We’d not managed to secure beds on the sleeper train so it was seats for us on a rattler which made dozens of stops en route to our 4.30am alight. Not the ideal scenario for sleep so we filed that in the “an experience” folder. After some kayaking and relaxing on the lovely beaches it was time to accept our adventure of a lifetime was coming to an end. Time for Louise and I to find jobs again and for Kian to return to Spalding Monkshouse Primary School. And what better way for the reality to bite than swapping 30 degrees Centigrade for freezing temperatures and snow-bound roads...

Health & Beauty

Banish Wrinkles with Collagen If you’re like many women at or near the “other side” of 40, you want your skin to look as young as you feel. You search for and try products to help you reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines. There is one piece of advice that remains at the top of expert’s list to banish wrinkles – use products that boost collagen production. What Is Collagen? Collagen is a type of protein found throughout your body. It’s in your muscles, bones, tendons, and your skin. It’s the protein that keeps your body glued together and working correctly so that you stay strong and supple. In your youthful prime, your skin produced collagen on its own. Now that you’re getting older, your body is not able to maintain high collagen levels like it once used to. This has a direct impact on how old your skin looks. How To Use Collagen To Banish Wrinkles For years, women have paid a large price for beautiful skin by having collagen directly injected into the skin. Plastic surgeons use a large needle to inject the fibrous protein into wrinkles to plump them up and make them disappear. The injections are painful and only last a few months before the collagen wears off and the wrinkles reappear. Although injections are highly effective, they have negative side effects. Some women have difficulty showing expression after having large amounts of collagen injected into their face. Others have difficulty moving their lips or eyes because

22 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

of how stiff the collagen injections make the delicate area around their mouth and eyes. Now, there’s a better way for women who do not want to go through the pain or limitations caused by injections. Boosting Collagen Production Without Injections Producers of anti-aging products have found ingredients that naturally stimulate your body’s collagen levels. Moisturizers and creams offer an easier, more enjoyable way of boosting collagen production. Here’s what it takes to banish wrinkles and promote the production of collagen in your skin: • Wash and exfoliate your skin. Never apply moisturizer on dirty skin. Wash your face and exfoliate before using anti-aging creams. Exfoliation cleans the pores by removing dead cells and skin. This allows the collagen boosting ingredients to penetrate your skin. • Apply moisturizing anti-aging cream to dry skin. A little bit goes a long way when applying anti-aging creams to your face and skin. You don’t need to lather on the moisturizer for the collagen production to take place. • Stimulate collagen production. As

the cream gets absorbed into your skin, it will stimulate your skin to produce more collagen proteins. How To Choose A Moisturizer To Help You Boost Collagen Levels In Your Skin There are plenty of moisturizers that claim to help you rebuild collagen levels. When finding the right product for your skin, there are a few things you should look for. • Choose a collagen boosting cream with Vitamin C. Your body needs this vitamin to produce more collagen. With Vitamin C infused into your anti-aging cream, you help speed your body’s collagen production. • Know the difference between day and night face creams. You can use either or both. Some day creams offer UV protection to help prevent damage from sun exposure, others go on separately from sunscreen offering you more control. Night creams are thicker and do not offer this protection. Know the difference so you don’t get burned. When it comes to slowing the signs of aging, you need to restore your skin’s collagen levels. With the right cream, you avoid the pain of injections and still get the same rejuvenating results

Preparing a

Vegetable Garden in Spring Spring is a good time to start preparing ground and digging beds ready for next season. Clearing plants which have finished cropping as you go will save on having to do a big job all in one big task and will make digging the land over much easier. After digging vacant ground can be covered with black polythene to stop weeds growing Much of the vegetation will be suitable for making compost, so if you haven’t already got one, now is a good time to start a compost heap. As the weather has been so horrid over the past weeks the jobs that would traditionally be thought of for early Spring have now been pushed back to April.

Harvesting & Storing Vegetables in Early Spring

Start harvesting early Sprouting broccoli. Finish harvesting Brussels sprouts and harvest early maturing over-wintered lettuce

(sets), Kohl Rabi, Leeks, Lettuce, Onion (seed), Onion (sets), Parsnips, New Potatoes (tubers), Peas, Potatoes (maincrop), Radish, Shallots (sets), Spring Onions, Turnips

Protecting Vegetables & Herbs in Early Spring

Sowing & P lanting Vegetables in Early Spring

Outdoors under protection (fleece, poly-tunnels or cloches)

There’s still time to buy vegetable seed, onion sets, asparagus crowns and seed potatoes but try to do this at the beginning of the month.

Weather conditions can greatly affect the germination of seeds. Always wait until the soil is workable. If severe weather conditions persist into March, it’s best to wait until April before sowing seed outdoors especially if the ground is still frosted.

Outdoors

In the Czech Republic, Skoda vRS models are admired for their toughness and performance, and in the UK, they’ve also garnered a real fanbase. Octavia vRS owners often state there’s probably no finer all-rounder on the market at this price point, and they might well have a case. For under £30,000, you get a powerful 2.0-litre 184PS diesel engine mated to a decent automatic gearbox that helps put the power down via all-wheel drive. It handles nimbly for a larger car too, and is equally at home on a B road as it is on a motorway chewing up the miles. It’s not often you can say an estate car is handsome, but the Octavia vRS has a smart, modern, unaggressive look to it, despite being one of Skoda’s athletic models. You can notice the influence from Skoda’s owners - Volkswagen - in the styling of its newer models. In the same way that the Golf GTI and R models aren’t

too aggressive, the Skoda isn’t either. Of course, Skoda is a very modest brand, so the confident and unassuming styling works well for it. Space is abundant in the Octavia estate; there aren’t many cars you can get for under £30k that can reach 62mph in under eight seconds with a boot the size of a small cavern. There’s also room aplenty for human beings too, with the rear seats more than spacious enough for an adult to sit and relax in over a long journey. Really, if you need more car than this you probably need to consider a van or a minibus. So, the Skoda Octavia vRS is fast, it’s good to drive, it’s safe, and it’s got more space than your attic. At under £30,000, you’ll have serious difficulties finding a better allrounder than this Czech folk hero.
