Welcome to the April issue Hooray….it will soon be the Easter holidays, I know how many parents look forward to the breaks from school and the rush of a daily morning routine and we’re not far away now. Hopefully as we go into April we will be saying goodbye to the rain, ice and winds of winter and hello to bright and cheerful Spring days. This month we have been away for a weekend exploring Oxford and the Cotswolds, I love a city break and it’s one area that we’ve never spent much time in and what a gorgeous part of the country it is. If you find yourself in this area make sure you stop off in the picture postcard village of Bourton-on-the-Water, it’s a quintessentially British village! The UK has so many treasures here that we often overlook. In this issue we are definitely thinking about all things Easter and Spring! We have teamed up with The Caravan and Camping Club to give you guidance on getting back to nature and starting your caravan or camping journey as well as this they are sharing their top tips for the seasoned caravanner. April is stress awareness month, if you’re feeling more anxious than usual then please check out our guide to reduce stress. Now is the time to get out into the garden and start work on getting it prepared for the season and finally Tim is test driving the new Ford Kuga. For fans of Truckfest check out our competition to win free tickets.

The Big Boston Clean-up celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and will be a part of the national Great British Spring Clean campaign. It’s one of the biggest community events of the year with probably the biggest feel-good factor. Boston’s clean-up will take place over four days, from Monday, April 10, to Thursday, April 13. There will be opportunities for teams of neighbours, friends and relatives to work together, helping clean up their own areas. You can sign up now using the online pledge form, by contacting Jen Moore at Boston Borough Council on 01205 314583 or by emailing Jen at jenny.moore@boston.gov.uk Jen also wants to hear of any grot spots that you think need particular clean-up attention. She said: “The Big Boston Clean-up has proved a successful community event over the past

nine years, and we look forward to welcoming all our usual supporters and, hopefully, new ones to mark the tenth anniversary. “We start at 9am and finish at 3pm each day, but volunteers can do as little or as much as they want to. There’s a coffee break and a free lunch provided each day. “ She said volunteers needed to wear clothing appropriate to anticipated weather conditions and stout footwear. Everything else high-visibility vests, litter pickers, sacks and gloves are provided. The clean-up starts each day at 9am at Municipal Buildings. There will also be a Big Schools Clean-up before the Easter break when primary school children will clear litter from in and around their school grounds. If your school has not so far signed up and wants to be involved, email Tracey Banks at tracey.banks@boston.gov.uk

War museum needs last-gasp help After years of determined effort and sheer hard graft all that stands between a new finished-product visitor attraction for the Boston area is £15,000. It sounds a lot, but pales compared to the personal investment and monumental effort already put in by Paul and Linda Britchford. It is the remaining amount they need to be able to complete the catering facilities at their world wars museum at Freiston Shore. Through their own efforts and an

undiminished passion they have turned their mobile We’ll Meet Again museum into a new, permanent facility of national importance. When Paul is not wearing his sergeant’s uniform and barking orders to give visitors a real hands-on experience of the Second World War, he is dressed in overalls, high-vis and hard hat. Together with wife Linda they have turned their hand to the hard work of building their museum from the ground up, and are now within grasping distance of the finish line. “We will be open to first visitors to the new museum in the next few weeks, but the cafe will not be able to open. We need just £15,000 more to completely finish and be able to provide refreshments. We have gone as far as we can possibly go and need help to finish the job,” said Paul. The couple have invested everything they have into the enterprise and are now relying on last-minute help to complete the project. The museum is not where it is by accident. The site is adjacent to the old sea wall upon which remain the best-preserved Second World War defences in the country. Now

Surprise gift ensures dogs travel in style Dogs and staff at a South Lincolnshire rescue centre will travel in style thanks to the surprise gift of an eye-catching new van by loyal supporters. The van, which features photos of two of Jerry Green Dog Rescue’s success stories, was donated by the PawPrint Charitable Trust to celebrate a 20-year association between the two charities. Jo Hickson, manager at Jerry Green Dog Rescue’s South Lincolnshire Centre in Algarkirk, said: “This donation came right out of the blue. It was a wonderful surprise. PawPrint also offered to pay for signwriting the van and asked me to choose two dogs to feature on the sides of the vehicle. “Poppy is a beautiful black lurcher

who had a tough start in life but now has a fantastic home at the seaside. And terrier Ginny originally came to us as a stray but is now flourishing with her loving new adopter. Both dogs are real characters and like to be centre of attention, so they were a natural choice!” People in South Lincolnshire will have a chance to see the striking images of this lovely duo as the van will be used for bringing dogs into rescue care, vet and home visits, picking up gifts of food and bedding, as well as for fundraising events and activities. Jacqui Bell, CEO at Jerry Green Dog Rescue, said: “PawPrint has been one of our most loyal supporters since 1997 and we are delighted it chose to mark our 20-year association in this generous way. It will make a huge difference at the South Lincolnshire Centre.” The Peugeot Partner van was purchased from Taylors of Boston and the signwriting was added by Espin Signs of Scunthorpe.

looking out on reclaimed marsh which forms part of the RSPB reserve are the gun placements, pill boxes and soldiers’ accommodation from another age. Over the years 18,500 children have had the We’ll Meet Again experience – greeted by “Sarge B” who soon has the new recruits kitted out as soldiers and jumping to attention. “We take all visitors straight back to the 1940s. Some aren’t used to the discipline once Sarge B gets warmed up, but they love it” said Paul. Paul said: “Everything we do is hands-on and role play – that’s the best way to engage and the response is fantastic. If we talk about a Thompson machine gun it will not be out of reach, behind a pane of glass. Everyone who wants to will be able to touch and hold it. It makes it real.” There will be full access for the disabled to ensure that old soldiers can visit. Paul said they had already had some wonderful results with items sparking memories in people with dementia. One elderly lady immediately retrieved her childhood skills when she able to play with a whip and top. Prisoners at nearby North Sea Camp have constructed display cabinets for the museum from materials supplied by Paul and Linda. The World War One Commemoration Society has booked the museum for its events in 2018 marking the centenary of the end of the First World War. The project has had approval from Government, impressed with its educational aspects, and received a £200,000 Treasury grant. Paul and Linda have launched a crowd funding campaign for the £15,000 they need at Just Giving. You can make a donation using this link www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ paul-britchford. was pleased to attend the official opening of the new state-of-theart Jaguar Land Rover showrooms at Kirton. The new facility, opened by Duckworth, is impressive, representing two of the world’s top car marques. Equally important, for me, is the investment in the borough that this represents. Together with its neighbour, the equally impressive Sportsbikeshop, a leading UK motorcycle parts and accessories retailer trading internationally, they are an expression of confidence in the borough’s ability to grow business. The new garage has cost more than £7 million and created new jobs, Duckworth’s initial expansion into Boston happened in 2007, at the old site on London Road, Kirton. This latest investment in Boston is a vision of the future for the family and they have worked closely with Jaguar Land Rover to build this impressive facility. The council has a new economic development manager and we are always pleased to hear from new businesses and businesses with plans to expand or even with ambitions to relocate here. We will give every assistance we can. Please contact Clive Gibbon on 01205 314 211 or email him at clive.gibbon@boston.gov.uk A vitally-important piece of work for the future development of the borough is coming to a conclusion. I am chairman of the South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee, which has been working on the development blueprint known as the Local Plan. A version of the Local Plan has been produced with you in mind. We have taken on board the comments you have made so far about how you would like to see Boston Borough developed. A lot of work has gone

into its production, and it cannot be stressed enough how important this will be as a guide affecting where we build for the future housing, employment and shopping through to 2036. You now have a final chance to comment on the plan, before it is adopted, to help shape the future for generations to come, so please take a little time to read the findings. You can find out more at www. southeastlincslocalplan.org The council welcome yet another Government minister to the borough when Faith and Integration Minister Lord Bourne visited, hot on the heels of Hilary Benn and the Brexit committee. Lord Bourne came to hear directly from local residents and council leaders about the effects of recent migration on the area Representatives from the council have constantly beaten a path to Westminster to raise issues created by the rapid pace of population change in Boston. I, personally, have never missed an opportunity to speak to anyone with influence about these issues. That’s why ministers and Shadow ministers have visited Boston, including Brandon Lewis, Andrew Jones and Chuka Umunna. We continually highlight and spotlight the concerns of our residents at the highest levels. Lord Bourne met with heads of local services including education, police, housing and health, as well as local councillors, community representatives and front line staff, to discuss their experiences of working and living in the town. The Minister concluded his visit by meeting parishioners and volunteers who run the Boston Connected Community Table lunches at St Botolph’s Parish Church. The lunch events bring people of different backgrounds and faiths together. In his meeting with councillors, the Minister explained how the Government’s £100million Controlling Migration Fund will help ease pressures on local services. The Fund is currently open for bids and then those bids received will be assessed during the coming weeks.

Advice

Statutory Sick Pay

U

nscrupulous employers are using underhanded tactics to avoid paying their employees Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), the Citizens Advice charity has revealed. Citizens Advice say that some local employers are exploiting confusion around sick pay to avoid paying out and are using tactics including cancelling people’s shifts after they’d called in sick, to appear as though they weren’t meant to be working in the first place. Companies even asked employees for a doctor’s note even though people can selfcertify for up to seven days. Last year the national Charity helped over 12,000 people to deal with problems related to sick pay John, an adviser with Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire told us “Sick pay is a basic right which many workers are entitled to and yet week after week we help people who are being cheated out of sick pay, even though they are legally entitled to payment ” What is sick pay? How does it work? If you’re ill for more than four days in a row (including non-working days), you can get £88.45 per week statutory sick pay (SSP). This is paid by your employer for up to 28 weeks.

This is the absolute minimum you must be paid, but if your company has a sick pay scheme (or “occupational scheme”) you may get more. If you have more than one job you might also get SSP from each employer. Sick pay is paid by your employer in the same way as your normal wages, e.g on the normal payday, with tax deducted. A typical sick pay scheme usually starts after a minimum period of service, for example, a three month probationary period. Your contract will have the full details. Am I entitled to sick pay? If you work (and aren’t self-employed), you’re legally entitled to sick pay if you’re ill for four days in a row and earn, on average, more than £112 per week (before tax). . You must follow your employer’s’ rules about reporting sickness absence. If you don’t, you’ll still receive SSP but you’ll be breaking a term of your contract and you could eventually lose your job. Most employers ask you to provide a sick note if you’re off for more than seven days, but at the very least you should call in sick as soon as you need to take time off work, and ask if there’s anything else you need to do to record your sickness.

You won’t get SSP if you: • are self-employed • have already had SSP for 28 weeks (and the 28 weeks ended within the last 8 weeks) • had Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) in the last 12 weeks • are getting statutory maternity pay or Maternity Allowance • are pregnant, your baby is due in

• • •

4 weeks or less and your illness is pregnancy-related had a baby in the last 14 weeks (or the last 18 weeks if your baby was born over 4 weeks early) are in the armed forces are in legal custody (detained either by the police or in prison) are an agricultural worker (read about agricultural sick pay on GOV.UK)

What if I’m not entitled to any sick pay? If you can’t get sick pay, you might be able to claim Employment and Support Allowance and other benefits contact us on 03444 111 444 or visit your local office for further help.

Even if your employer says you’re ‘selfemployed’, you might in fact be a ‘worker’ and entitled to sick pay. It’s always best to check if this applies to you - contact your nearest Citizens Advice if you’re not sure. Even if your employer says you’re ‘self-employed’, you might in fact be a ‘worker’ and entitled to sick pay. It’s always best to check if this applies to you - contact your nearest Citizens Advice if you’re not sure.

What if I work for an agency – am I entitled to sick pay? If you’re an agency or casual worker, if you work part-time or on a fixed-term contract of if youre on a zero hours contract, you can still get sick pay - you should ask your employer for it. If they say no, ask them to explain why. You can contact your nearest Citizens Advice if you’re not happy with their explanation What should I do if my employer refuses to pay up If you’re not getting the pay you’re entitled to, for example if your employer says they can’t afford to pay, you can take steps to get the money you’re owed. If you think you’re entitled to statutory sick pay but your employer says you’re not and refuses to pay it, you should contact HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) on 0300 200 3500 For further information visit www. citizensadvice.org.uk/work/rightsatwork or if you need more help contact your nearest Citizens Advice.

School news

Bicker Preparatory School The Foundation Stage and Class 3 were delighted to have a visit from a tractor today. The visit was arranged by Willoughby Foods, the school’s hot meals provider as part of their ‘food and farming’ week. The tractor was kindly brought by Les Gilbert and Adam Langley from Doubleday’s in Swineshead. Children learnt about tractor safety, how a tractor works and all about the technology of the on-board computer. Class 3 prepared questions to ask and all children were able to sit in the cab. Headteacher, Mrs Julie Miles, said ‘ We are very grateful to Willoughby Foods, and to

Boston Grammar School Congratulations to our Year 10 Maths Team Challenge winners: Back: Finley Roberts and Harry Hopkins Front: Matthew Leachman and Pierce Murray On Wednesday 22nd February a team of four Year 10 students travelled to the Annual Maths Feast organised by the Further Mathematics Support Programme. The event was held at Sir Robert Pattinson Academy in Lincoln. The event was attended by many schools, with 15 teams from the area including local grammar schools, Lincoln Minster School and the Priory LSST amongst others. Over a series of rounds the boys worked together on demanding questions, performing incredibly well throughout the whole competition.

Boston College

Boston College’s first annual Bake Off final took place in March, with six young bakers from across the county battling it out, creating their ‘Show Stopper’ cake to be in with the chance of winning the title of ‘Star Baker 2017’. Inspired by the Great British Bake Off, ‘The Boston College Bake Off’ aims to highlight the talent and skills of some of the counties best young bakers. Back in November 2016, schools across the county were contacted with the opportunity for their year 9, 10 and 11 students to take part in the Bake off by submitting their ‘Show Stopper’ cake ideas. After receiving an overwhelming amount of entries, the top 12 were shortlisted and invited to take part in the Boston College Bake Off Masterclass, where they were put through their paces in three technical challenges, which included sponge cake making, Langue de chat piped biscuits, and assembling and decorating a cake using buttercream and 10 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

assorted decorations. These 12 bakers were then judged on their initial entry, ability, organisation and attitude, with the final six then announced. ‘The Boston College Bake Off’ final saw, Katie Hudson from Thomas Cowley High School, Alena Osbourne from Boston High School, Sophie Lorenz from Thomas Middlecott Academy, Oliver Batt from St George’s Academy and Ash Holloway and Libby Simpson Tunnard from William Lovell C.O.E Academy, spend the day in College’s industry standard bakeries creating their ‘Show Stopper’ cake idea from their original entry. After winning the title Ash said, “My teacher told me about the competition, as I want to open my own bakery in the future. I had so much fun and I’m really happy that I won.” Steve Cottrell, Boston College Programme Area Manager for Catering and Hospitality said, “The Catering

Summer School Invite Harry Hopkins, Year 10, has been invited to the National Mathematics Summer School organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust. The summer school is being held at Woodhouse Grove School in Leeds and led by James Gazet, a mathematics teacher at Eton College. Mrs Cooper, Subject Leader for Mathematics said, “We are all very proud of Harry and his achievements in the numerous competitions he has taken part in and we hope he enjoys this exciting experience.”

and Hospitality Department at Boston College have been ‘blown away’ by the response from schools (some even using the competition as GCSE coursework) and the number of entries that we have had in this first year of the Boston College Bake Off Competition. We have also been very impressed by the very high standard of both written entries and practical work produced during both the Masterclass and the Bake Off Final. We are very encouraged that there are so many young, talented bakers out there! We plan to work much closer with local secondary schools that we have built up a relationship with as a result of the competition and have already started organising visits to schools and for school catering students to spend a day at College. Our wish is to build upon this year’s success and make the Boston College Bake Off Competition an even bigger and better annual event! Congratulations to the Boston College Bake Off Winner for 2017!”

South East Lincolnshire Local Plan 2011-2036: Publication Version is being published on 10th April 2017 for a 6 week consultation period that will run until 22nd May 2017 The South East Lincolnshire Local Plan covers the whole of the local authority areas of Boston Borough Council and South Holland District Council and will guide development and use of land in the area up until 2036. As we are now at the final stage of plan preparation this consultation will be different to previous ones undertaken in that the comments made must relate to whether the Local Plan is ‘sound’ and complies with legal and procedural requirements. A guidance note will therefore be available to view on our website: southeastlincslocalplan.org, which sets out advice on how to respond. The Publication Version Local Plan includes sites to be allocated for different types of development, such as housing and employment, in order to meet the area’s needs, as well as identifying those areas of land which must be protected from development - perhaps because of their historic or environmental importance. It also covers a wide range of other planning related matters in the form of policies, against which planning applications can be judged.

12 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

We will also be publishing a number of other documents for consultation including the Policies Map, Sustainability Appraisal, Statement of Consultation as well as other supporting documents. The documents will be available to view on our website (address opposite), in the area’s libraries, mobile libraries and the council offices in Boston and Spalding, during normal office hours. An online consultation portal will also be available at: southeastlincslocalplan.org/consultation from the 10th April 2017. Cllr Peter Bedford, chairman of the South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee, said: “We have taken on board the comments you have made so far about how you would like to see Boston Borough and South Holland developed. A lot of work has gone into its production, and it cannot be stressed enough how important this will be in influencing where we build up until 2036. You now have a final chance to comment on the plan, before it is submitted, to help shape the future for generations to come.”

You can comment on the consultation documents: n Preferably online via our dedicated consultation portal at: southeastlincslocalplan.org/consultation n By emailing a completed comment form (available to download from our website or collect at locations listed to the left) to southeastlincslocalplan@sholland.gov.uk n By post using the comment form to: South East Lincolnshire Local Plan, South Holland District Council Offices, Priory Road, Spalding, Lincolnshire, PE11 2XE

Comments made must be received by 5pm on 22nd May 2017 All comments received will be submitted to the Secretary of State and considered as part of an independent Examination in Public by a Planning Inspector. For further information, please contact the Local Planning team at: southeastlincslocalplan@sholland.gov.uk or call :

Keeping Safe when Caravan & Camping Family Life Staying safe on the campsite It’s very rare to have an accident or safetyrelated incident on a campsite and we’d like to keep it that way. Here are a few pointers to help keep you and your family safe while you’re on site.

Carbon monoxide (CO) can kill • Never take a barbecue into a tent, awning, caravan or motorhome. Even a cooling barbecue gives off plenty of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO), which can kill. • Never use a fuel-burning appliance to heat your tent or awning. Gas and kerosene heaters – unless they are permanently fitted in a caravan or motorhome – should only be used outside. Stoves and barbecues are designed for cooking not space heating. • Never run a gas, petrol or diesel-powered generator inside a caravan, motorhome, tent or awning. Make sure fumes from a generator don’t blow into your unit or anyone else’s from outside either. • Don’t cook inside your tent or awning • Don’t use any other gas, charcoal, liquid or solid fuel appliances inside a tent or awning. Gas-powered fridges and lamps, for example, also need plenty of ventilation to prevent them

producing poisonous carbon monoxide. Tents and awnings aren’t generally designed with this in mind. • Consider using a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm, provided it is suitable for the condition you intend to use it, check with the supplier/ manufacturer, though it should never be used as an alternative to the precautions above. • Always have gas appliances in your caravan or motorhome serviced regularly.

Fire Safety At most campsites tents, caravans and motorhomes are pitched at least 6m apart to prevent the spread of fire. It is recommended you have a fire bucket full of water outside your unit, especially on campsites where no fire-fighting equipment is supplied.

Tips for the Caravan Season Local caravan maintenance company BL Caravans give their top tips for safe caravanning this season: For many caravan owners, this is the time of year when caravans are being prepared for their first outing of the year. A caravan should be treated no differently to your car when it comes to regular maintenance to help keep you safe. Having an engineer complete a service on your caravan means that a 60 point check is made, which includes running gear, gas system, 12v and 24v electrical systems, water system and a damp test. It is essential to check your running gear as caravan tyres tend to deteriorate when stood. Did you know that tyres are date stamped? VOSA and NCC recommend that tyres are replaced every 5 years. Another early season problem occurs

16 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

when water has been left in the system. If this has frozen and expanded, it may have cracked taps or damaged water heater tanks. Carbon Monoxide is a silent killer. Flexible gas pipes are dated and need regular renewal and gas seals degrade. Ensure your gas is checked by a qualified engineer. For your own safety, a carbon monoxide monitor is recommended as equally important to a smoke detector. A bit of time spent on maintenance of your caravan helps to make stress free holidays.

Looking after gas and other fuels Calor containers We take gas, petrol or other liquid fuel on a campsite is to burn it for cooking, heating or lighting so it makes sense to look after it carefully at other times, so it doesn’t burn at the wrong time in the wrong place. Always follow the supplier’s instructions on storage and transportation of fuel. Containers should be of an approved type. Fuel containers should be transported and stored upright and positioned carefully, so they cannot accidentally become disconnected or fall over and are less likely to leak. When you are using any gas or liquid fuel appliances, it’s vital to have adequate ventilation. Don’t forget – many caravans and motorhomes will have a gas fridge working all the time. Calor Gas Recall: An important notice for campers who use CalorLite cylinders: Calor Gas is issuing a product recall with immediate effect on all 6kg CalorLite cylinders made between 2008-2011 inclusive. All such cylinders must be returned to a local CalorLite stockist immediately.

e all know that exercise is good for you but why choose cycling? As a fairly recent convert to cycling (previously I had always maintained that I’d rather walk!) I have lots of people asking me why I changed my mind and caught the cycling bug...well for me it started because I wanted to get fitter. But with all those sports available why cycling? Cycling is a low impact exercise which is gentler on my ever-aging joints and therefore ideal for all age-groups from pre-school to retirement. And it doesn’t have to be a solo exercise – I chose to ride with a beginners group once a week. This gave me the confidence I was sorely lacking (I wasn’t brave enough to go riding on my own) plus cycling has opened up a whole new social group to me. I chose the beginners group run by Boston Wheelers on Monday evenings. Led by a small group of experienced riders they advised me on everything from best lights to how to use my gears to my best advantage. Joining a group was the best decision that I made – meeting new people, seeing areas of the countryside which I hadn’t seen before and grabbing lungful’s of our great Lincolnshire air. Starting with a 5 or 6 mile ride I soon found that I was covering over 20 miles in an evening and barely noticed the mileage as we chatted along the route. You don’t need fancy equipment – yes, some bikes are very expensive but it’s easy to enjoy this exercise on a budget by picking up a second-hand bike. On Monday evenings we see a great variety of bikes – from shoppers

to all-singing-all-dancing road bikes and even a tandem on occasion! Just make sure that you always wear a helmet...this is something that you should never scrimp on! Another benefit of cycling is saving money - think of the money you could save by cycling to work, especially with the price of fuel increasing almost weekly and parking doesn’t come cheaply either if you need to take a car to work 5 or 6 times per week. If you’re employed you could takeadvantage of the government’s cycle to work scheme www. cyclescheme.co.uk as a tax free benefit. The area surrounding Boston has plentiful routes away from main roads and cycling allows you the time to appreciate them. We regularly see wildlife such as rabbits, foxes, deer and owls on our evening rides. Routes can be as long or as short as you want them to be which makes cycling an ideal sport to fit in around work and all our other commitments. You don’t need to stick to road cycling either – there’s a multitude of styles and groups out there so there’s bound to be one that catches your imagination. And if you take to

cycling like a duck to water you might want to join in more experienced group rides – local affiliated (insured) cycling clubs such as Boston Wheelers, Velo One and Boston Tri Club offer longer and hillier rides throughout the week. If you think your children might be interested in cycling there are dedicated groups for them too, such as Go-Ride on Saturday mornings at the PRSA, where they can learn skills from qualified coaches whilst making new friends. Practically everyone can enjoy the health benefits of cycling with the right equipment so grab your helmet and get outdoors in this great Spring weather and see what cycling is all about!

Boston Wheelers do several rides a week from beginners to speedy rides and a tradition al club run on a Sunday. Some rides will split into smaller similar ability groups along the way. There are several social rides a year out of county as well as social tea and cake rides on summer Sundays, a group of members are off on a weekend jolly to the Eroica Britannia Vintage Festival. Qualified coaches run a Junior Go-Ride session on a Saturday morning. Full ride details are on the website. 20 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

April is Stress Awareness Month

S

tress Awareness Month has been held every April, since 1992 and during this annual thirty day period, health care professionals and health promotion experts across the country will join forces to increase public awareness about both the causes and cures for our modern stress epidemic. What you can do to help with stress Be active Exercise won’t make your stress disappear, but it will reduce some of the emotional intensity that you’re feeling, clearing your thoughts and letting you to deal with your problems more calmly. Take control There’s normally a solution to any problem. If you remain passive, thinking, ‘I can’t do anything about my problem’, your stress will get worse. That feeling of loss of control is one of the main causes of stress and lack of wellbeing. The act of taking control is in itself empowering, and it’s a crucial part of finding a solution that satisfies you and not someone else. Connect with people A good support network of colleagues, friends and family can ease your work troubles and help you see things in a different way. If you don’t connect with people, you won’t have support to turn to when you need help The activities we do with friends help us relax. We often have a good laugh with them, which is an excellent stress reliever. Have some ‘me time’ Here in the UK, we work some of the longest hours in Europe, meaning we often don’t spend enough time doing things we really enjoy. We all need to take some time for socialising, relaxation or exercise. Try setting aside a couple of nights a week for some quality “me time” away from work. By earmarking those two days, it means you won’t be tempted to work overtime. Challenge yourself Setting yourself goals and challenges, whether at work or outside, such as learning a new language or a new sport, helps to build confidence. This will help you deal with stress. By continuing to learn, you become more emotionally resilient as a person, it arms

you with knowledge and makes you want to do things rather than be passive, such as watching TV or looking at a screen all the time.” Avoid unhealthy habits Don’t rely on alcohol, smoking and caffeine as your ways of coping. Men more than women are likely to do this and is called avoidance behaviour. As a rule women are better at seeking support from their social circle. Over the long term, these crutches won’t solve your problems. They’ll just create new ones. It’s like putting your head in the sand, it might provide temporary relief, but it won’t make the problems disappear. You need to tackle the cause of your stress.

If you don’t have time to volunteer, try to do someone a favour every day. It can be something as small as helping someone to cross the road or going on a coffee run for colleagues. Try to be positive Look for the positives in life, and things for which you’re grateful. People don’t always appreciate what they have, try to be glass half full instead of glass half empty. Try writing down three things that went well, or for which you’re grateful, at the end of every day. Accept the things you can’t change Changing a difficult situation isn’t always possible. Try to concentrate on the things you do have control over. If your company is going under and is making redundancies, for example, there’s nothing you can do about it. In a situation like that, you need to focus on the things that you can control, such as getting your CV up to date, looking at cutting monthly expenditure and then looking for a new job.

Help other people Evidence shows that people who help others, through activities such as volunteering or community work, become more resilient. Helping people who are often in situations worse than yours will help you put your problems into perspective. The more you give, the more resilient and happy you feel. Work smarter, not harder Working smarter means prioritising your work, concentrating on the tasks that will make a real difference. Leave the least important tasks to last, accept that your in-tray may not be empty at the end of the day. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 23

Boston May Fair

T

he annual May Fair in Boston is bang up to date, with the latest high-tech big thrill rides. But it enjoys an historic past stretching back almost 900 years. The May Fair is inextricably linked with Boston’s weekly Wednesday and Saturday Markets, both having their beginnings in the medieval fairs held in the town. Trading fair or “marts” have been held in Boston since at least the 12th Century, and were granted a Royal Charter. The fun and trade elements of those original fairs separated out to become the stall markets and the May Fair that all now know and love. In the Middle Ages merchants came from all over Europe to buy and sell at Boston fair. The modern street fair evolved in the 1890s with attractions at that time including steam yachts, a boxing booth and even Rhona the Rat Girl in what today would be a very un-pc freak show. The arrival in town of the May Fair was a major event in the calendar, still looked forward to by boys and girls of all ages today. The traditional proclamation to signal the start of May Fair week used to be announced by the Mayor from the Assembly Rooms balcony and attracted vast crowds. A unique golden ticket, to ride every attraction at Boston’s May Fair for free for as many times as you want, is up for grabs. Once again the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain has agreed that one lucky reader will win the golden ticket. Paul Maltby, Secretary of the Derby, Notts, Mid and South Lincs Section of the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain, said: “This will be the fourth year that a lucky youngster has had a chance to win a golden ticket at Boston May Fair. It is always great fun and always brilliant to see the smile on the winner’s face when they receive their golden ticket.” This year’s winner will also be part of the special May Fair proclamation, receiving their ticket from Boston Mayor, Cllr Stephen Woodliffe, and a representative from the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain, as tradition dictates, on the steps of the Gallopers at noon on Saturday, April 29. The fair will open for business in the Market Place in Boston at 11am that day. The May Fair is an event all the family can enjoy. Young and older enjoy the rides and the other attractions. Boston’s town centre will be completely

taken over by a wide variety of fairground attractions, including thrill rides, children’s rides, game and food stalls from Saturday, April 29, until Saturday, May 6. It will be open from 11am to 11pm on the first Saturday, and from 11am to 10.30pm on every other day except for the Sunday when it will be open from 1.30pm to 9pm. The civic proclamation ceremony is attended by VIP guests including mayors and mayoresses from neighbouring authorities and representatives of the Showmen’s Guild. They will then enjoy themselves on the rides – usually doing battle on the dodgems.

The fair is rated as being in the top five street fairs in the country. Families of showmen have been coming to Boston for generations, occupying the same pitches with their rides and stalls, which are jealously guarded. To be in with a chance of winning the golden ticket simply send your name, age and address with a daytime phone number to Communications, Boston Borough Council, Municipal Buildings, West Street, Boston PE21 8QR, or email emma.staff@ boston.gov.uk Deadline for entries is Friday, April 21.

Spring Garden Preparation

W

ith recent arrival of Spring, we hopefully can now leave behind the dark, dreary days of Winter. With pleasant weather on the horizon, and the number of sunny days increasing, it’s once again time to get serious about gardening. The harsh frost of winter may have left your garden looking limp, lifeless and in need of some attention, so here’s 7 important steps to help you create the perfect spring garden.

Lawn Preparation Throughout March and April, we highly recommend that you rake your lawn vigorously to help remove any moss, leaves and debris. The build up of moss during Winter may have caused some drainage issues, so ensure that you spike your lawn to help improve its drainage. Mower blades should be kept fairly high and you should only feed your lawn using nitrogen based fertilizers For more information, read our post on how to create the perfect lawn.

Pruning Early Spring is often the ideal time to prune and deadhead any damaged shrubs. Plants such as Clematis, Hydrangeas and Fuschias, that are expected to flower during mid-summer should

be pruned now. Roses and fruit trees should also be considered, as well as any shrubs that are due to bloom during the winter months too.

Planting & Perennials Spring is often the perfect time to stock up on seeds, plants and garden equipment. It’s also the perfect opportunity to divide any perennials that have been growing for several years to ensure that they continue to flower well. Dig a layer of manure into your beds and borders, to help maintain strong growth. You’ll then need to begin sowing those summerflowering plants such as Lillies, Gladiolus and any hardy annuals.

Spring Vegetables Many herbs and vegetables can be started during the early days of Spring. We strongly advise that you only plant vegetables outdoors when the weather is completely frost free. In the meantime, keeping them in the greenhouse or under a small polytunnel should be sufficient.

Weeding Weeding should also be high on the agenda over the next few months. Now that the ground is getting warmer, the chances of encountering a pesky weed or two dramatically increases. Arm yourself with a high quality weed killer before they get out of hand.

Tidy Beds & Borders Preparing your flower beds and borders is another step to creating the perfect garden this spring. Using well-seasoned manure or compost add a layer to help the soil prepare for planting. You should also hoe the beds quite heavily to soften the soil, but it’s always best to avoid digging them up completely.

Cleaning, Staining & Repairing Finally, the first few weeks of Spring are also the perfect time to keep abreast of cleaning and maintaining your outdoor space. Sweep, scrub and pressure wash your patio or driveway, and if you’ve got decking, select a dry day to stain and treat its wooden surface. Oh, and don’t forget about cleaning your garden tools either. Removing your tools of rust, dust and dirt will not only help to prolong their life expectancy, but they’re also better for the health of your garden. Don’t forget to get any tools sharpened! Spring is also the ideal opportunity to clean and repair your all weather garden furniture. Whether it’s a gazebo or metal furniture set,

What to Plant in April You can plant gladioli and acidantheras now. If you have any herbaceous perennials then you should thin their roots. Sow hardy annuals in situ and prick off those sown earlier. Remove any dead flowers from narcissus and other spring flowers. As the weather begins to get a little milder sow new lawn areas, but make sure you protect them from birds. Mow your lawn at medium height. Plant evergreen coniferous trees and shrubs now. You should apply mulch to roses and trim over lavender. Trim all winter-flowering heathers and remove dead flowers from rhododendrons. Prune early flowering shrubs and cut down hardy fuchsias to soil as new growth appears. Prune newly planted bush fruits. Use nets to protect flowers on fruit trees from any lingering frost. If the weather is dry then water the newly planted fruits and spray against pests and diseases (do not spray if the trees are in full flower). If you have a greenhouse then sow seeds of outdoor tomatoes, melon and courgettes. You should space out growing plants and watch for pests and diseases. Bedding plants should be moved into cold frames.

If you have a vegetable patch then you should start sowing of radish, lettuce, peas and beans. You should also sow your main crop of carrots. Cauliflower and calabrese should be planted out raised in cold frames. You can plant late potatoes and earth up your early ones.

Ford Kuga PROS ‘N’ CONS

huania Location: Poland and Lit

T

he new Ford Kuga is a delight to drive. I should know, as I spent 24 hours in one motoring from Warsaw in Poland to Vilnius in Lithuania. And let me tell you, Eastern Europe’s roads are not as kind to cars as Britain’s are – and that’s saying something. Many of the roads in Poland and Lithuania are peppered with potholes, broken up by the odd stretch of motorway, but often with roadworks. The new Kuga made light work of the potholes, due to its excellent suspension and well-padded seats. The only real grumble came from the car’s petrol engine. My Kuga was fitted with the 1.5-litre Ecoboost engine, in four-wheel-drive 182PS guise. It returns 38.2mpg and 171g/km of CO2, and it’s quite noisy when you put your foot down for overtakes. That said; the melodramatics are soon over, and the car is happy to settle into a less raucous cruise when it sees the open road ahead. Inside, the Kuga’s cabin is cleaner – in the sense that there aren’t as many buttons littering the dashboard. An electronic parking brake has also joined the party. Ford’s new Sync 3 system is responsible for doing away with many of the switches. It consists of a large touchscreen and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. It also enables you to control functions using voice instructions. While it’s really a face-lift, the new Kuga does have some new stuff going on underneath the bonnet, too. There is a new 120PS 1.5-litre TDCi diesel unit with front-wheel-drive, which delivers up to 64.2mpg and 115g/km of CO2. If you prefer more clout, there is a 2.0-litre TDCi engine with 150bhp, and you can choose to have it with all-wheel-drive or frontwheel drive. This variant will return up to 30 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

60.1mpg, while emitting 122g/km of CO2. If you want even further power, there’s an Intelligent All Wheel Drive version with 180PS. This does 54.3mpg on average and CO2 emissions are135g/km. The 1.5-litre Ecoboost petrol engine stays, and comes in two states of tune – 120PS or 150PS. Finally, as mentioned earlier, the fourwheel-drive 182PS variant of this petrol engine, driven here, returns up to 38.2mpg and emits171g/km of CO2. All-wheel-drive Kugas, like the one I drove, also include semi-autonomous Perpendicular Parking tech. This helps you to park, without using your hands, in tight spaces alongside other vehicles. I found this particularly useful when trying to park up in a congested area of Warsaw – as you do. The new Kuga can be bought for £20,845 in entry-level Zetec trim, and the Titanium model is priced from £24,245. The ST-Line model is on sale from £25,845, while the more luxury oriented Kuga Vignale comes in at £30,745. The Kuga is an affordable car, if bought at the lower end of the range. It comes well equipped and has enough space for a family of four. The car is comfortable and makes mincemeat out of long trips. The six hours I spent travelling from Warsaw to Vilnius would be gruelling for any car, but the new Kuga coped well, and, more importantly I did, too. Everything in the new Kuga is simple to use, and there are lots of handy storage compartments for things such as cash for toll booths, and cup holders for bottles of

water and mugs of coffee. The boot is also a good, square size, and you can load things in easily due to the low load lip. All in all, the new Ford Kuga offers good value for money. It is certainly worth buying or leasing if you need a main car that isn’t too big, yet is large enough to cope with a family of four. In four-wheel-drive guise it also turns into a useful tool for the winter months – something many parents, like me, will find invaluable on frosty school-runs using ice-rink-like rural routes.
