Welcome to the August issue We are now in full swing of the school holidays and I cannot believe how the nights are drawing in and that can only mean one thing…we have to make the most of the warmer weather! The last month I have personally been getting out and about to the local family attractions before the busy times with all the school children, I know it is only a matter of a few years and I will be doing battle like many of my parent friends! The highlight of our last month was my little boys nursery trip to Rand Farm Park – well worth the journey if your children like animals! We have also enjoyed family bike rides and trips to the seaside. Enough about me, let’s talk about what’s in this issue for you! Martin Lewis is offering advice on buying home insurance, making sure you have the best deal as well as the right cover. This month local resident Terry Despicht talks about the Boston Barrier to update all on the activities, we look at home security and Tim test drives the Suzuki S-Cross on page 26. We are always looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is to have a great month and enjoy the summer!

NEWS Joy Ellis signs for Joffe Books Joffe Books are delighted to be working with local author Joy Ellis on her series of DCI Nikki Galena mystery novels set on the Lincolnshire Fens. They’re immensely readable and gripping police procedurals with a strong sense of the landscape and towns of the Fens. They feature a tough no-nonsense detective Nikki Galena and her suave sergeant Joseph Easter. The first two books have just been released in paperback and kindle eBook to immediate success. CRIME ON THE FENS in its first ten days since release broken into the top 50 UK Amazon best-seller list. And SHADOW OVER THE FENS is hot on its heels. The next two books in the series will be out by the end of the year. JOY ELLIS IN HER OWN WORDS “I was born in Kent but spent most of my working life in London and Surrey. I was an apprentice florist to Constance Spry Ltd, a prestigious Mayfair shop that throughout the sixties and seventies teemed with both royalty and ‘real’ celebrities. What an

eye-opener for a working-class kid from the Garden of England! I swore then, probably whilst I was scrubbing the floor or making the tea, that I would have a shop of my own one day. It took until the early eighties, but I did it. Sadly the recession wiped us out, and I embarked on a series of weird and wonderful jobs; the last one being a bookshop manager. Surrounded by books all day, getting to order whatever you liked, and being paid for it! Oh bliss! And now I live in a village in the Lincolnshire Fens with my partner, Jacqueline, and our two second generation Springer spaniels. I had been writing mysteries for years but never had the time to take it seriously. Now I can, and as my partner is a highly decorated retired police officer; my choice of genre was suddenly clear. I have set my crime thrillers here in the misty fens because I sincerely love the remoteness and airy beauty of the marshlands. This area is steeped in superstitions and lends itself so well to murder!”

Biomass boilers

The switch has been thrown to light up the new biomass boiler at the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex – the latest advance in a number of green efficiency measures by Boston Borough Council. The 500kw boiler is fed automatically from a hopper using quality wood chip from sustainably managed woodlands. Heat transfer from the boiler will heat the pool water, domestic water such as the showers and heat the building. Throwing the switch were Boston Borough Council leader, Cllr Peter Bedford, and portfolio holder for leisure services, Cllr Claire Rylott. Cllr Bedford said: “We are happy to embrace new technologies which offer opportunities for efficiencies in these difficult financial times. On top of that these measures help reduce the council’s carbon footprint – important for the environment now and for future generations.” Cllr Rylott added: “I am pleased to see anything new in place which helps ensure we can continue to provide leisure, health and fitness facilities for the community.” Juliet Slater, team leader at biomass main contractor Robert Woodhead Ltd said: “We’ve been really lucky from the outset on this project. Boston Borough Council had a very clear idea of what it wanted. By working in partnership with the council we’ve been able to deliver a

project which will have long-term economic and environmental benefits.” By investing in biomass the council will be eligible for Renewable Heat Incentive, providing a long-term income stream to help subsidise services. The centre’s energy needs are also already supplemented by two rooftop solar arrays, taking free energy from the sun. Since the Geoff Moulder solar panels were installed in 2012 and 2014 they have provided Boston Borough Council with a £100,000 boost. A 500kw biomass boiler has also been installed at the Princess Royal Sports Arena, replacing costlier LPG – the site is not on mains gas. Fuel for the two leisure sites is being provided by Nottinghamshire Eco Fuels, who are working with a local company to provide the deliveries. Once burned the ash from the wood chip will be used as a soil improver in the community gardens. Since solar panels were switched on at the Princess Royal Sports Arena last June

there has been an additional saving of £5,150, plus energy generation worth £6,200 for the period up to March 31. That green-energy project is aimed at making and saving cash for the council to pay for repairs and improvements at the centre. The cost of the solar system was £104,000. Sport, leisure and recreation experts 1Life have now taken on full responsibility for the centre. The council will fund repairs and improvements to bring the centre up to an improved handover condition – costs covered by savings made by the energy efficiency improvements. The sport, leisure and recreation experts have a full repair and renew lease for the site, relieving borough council tax payers of any future financial responsibility. The biomass investments at GMLC and PRSA are expected to pay back within eight to nine years.

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston

Peter’s Notes

B

oston Borough Council has been working hard to address the need for family homes which are affordable. It has worked with Government agencies, housing associations and builders to enable families to move into properties which they can call a home of their own. As well as enabling these new homes to be built one has now been put forward for a national award for its building excellence.. Five new building schemes submitted by Boston Borough Council were all chosen as finalists in this year’s building control excellence awards for the East Midlands. And the Blue Street development, built by D Brown Building Contractors, was selected as the winner in the Best High Volume New Housing Development and now goes forward to the national awards. The awards, held in Leicester, are an opportunity for all local authority building control sections to celebrate the very best construction in the region. Paul Smith, Boston Borough Council’s head of building control, is currently chairman of the LABC East Midlands Region. He welcomed more than 350 guests to the event. The awards were presented by Graham Rowntree, former England and Leicester Tigers’ Rugby Union Player. The regional awards cover Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. There are 12 LABC regions and the winners from each of these twelve regions are shortlisted for the national finals to be held in London in November. This year Boston Borough Council’s Building Control section endorsed five schemes and we were very pleased that all five were selected as finalists. The schemes submitted were: ◆ A domestic extension in Freiston Road, Boston in the Best Extension or Alteration to an Existing Home category. The architect for this scheme was Jenny McIntee Architectural Design and the builder R H Developments Ltd. ◆ In the Best Individual New Home category Eden Lodge at Swineshead for Mr Booth was submitted, with Clive Wicks Associates as the architect.

Cllr Peter Bedford, right, welcomes the first family to their new home in Blue Street. The Green family had been flooded out of their former home in the 2013 disaster. Their new Blue Street home has flood resilience built in.

◆ The new flats at Maud Street, Boston were submitted in the Best Small New Housing Development and Best Social or Affordable New Housing Development for Taylor Pearson Construction Ltd and Geoff Carter Architects. ◆ The new housing development in Blue Street, Boston was submitted in the Best High Volume New Housing Development and Best Social or Affordable New Housing Development for D Brown Building Contractors and Chaplin Farrant Ltd. ◆ In the Best Large Commercial Building category the Mercedes Benz workshop and office building at Old Station Yard, Sutterton, was submitted for Lagan Building Contractors, Whittaker & Watt Architects and Ballyvesey Holdings. It is a feather in our cap to be nominated as a finalist with other major national developments from all over the country. Another affordable homes development in Argyle Street is now fully occupied. Devolution of some powers, and £450 million extra funding, from central Government to councils in Greater Lincolnshire, including Boston, moves ahead, with opportunity now for the public to comment on the proposals. I just want to straighten out one misunderstanding. The Government has insisted that if Greater Lincolnshire’s councils are to take advantage of this we must have a Greater Lincolnshire Elected Mayor. Some areas, such as Boston, have a long history of having their own mayor. These mayors are strictly historical civic positions and will be retained. The suggested Greater Lincolnshire Elected Mayor will be more like a chairman of the combined authority. Please take part in the public consultation by going to www.boston. gov.uk/devolution Read all the information and have your say. You have until August 8. New homes in Blue Street, Boston. Now up for a national building excellence award.

Advice

Scammers’ tricks

C

itizens Advice Mid Lincs is urging people in the Boston area to spread the word about scams and expose the tactics of fraudsters to protect others. They are launching Scams Awareness Month on 1 July to help stop people falling prey to scams by following a three-step rule get advice, report it, and tell others about it. It comes as national research by Citizens Advice finds scammers are using a variety of tactics to get people to part with their cash, with people losing an average of £2,500 across all types of scam. Scam methods include vishing whereby scammers cold-call people in a bid to get their bank details, and offers of fake services, such as telling people their computer has a virus which they can fix remotely. Investment scams carried the highest price tag, with people investing in fake diamonds or bogus stocks and shares losing of on average £20,000 each. Citizens Advice is warning people to be on guard and watch out for the different methods used by fraudsters, from doorstep selling of counterfeit goods to demands for upfront payments for services that never materialise.

Stuart Hellon, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Mid Lincs said: “Scams are not a minor blight, they heap misery on people and in some cases can lead to financial ruin. “Fraudsters use sophisticated techniques to con people and because they vary their methods, it can be tricky to spot when something is a scam. If you come across something that seems suspicious, seek advice so you don’t put yourself at risk. “It’s vital to report scams and spread the word so we can clampdown on con artists and stop others falling into the same traps.”

“It’s vital to report scams and spread the word so we can clampdown on con artists and stop others falling into the same traps.”

Stuart Hello n, Ch Citizens Adv ief Executive of ice Mid Linc s said: “Scams a

re not a min or blight, they heap misery on people a nd in s cases can le ome ad to financial ru in.”

EIGHT COMMON SCAMS REPORTED TO CITIZENS ADVICE ARE: 1. Investment - victims are persuaded to invest money into fake ventures and are then unable to get their money back. 2. Fake services - people are offered a service for a fee, only to find the service isn’t real or doesn’t exist at all. Examples include, offers to fix computers remotely and fake invoices for advertising. 3. Vishing - con-artists cold-call people pretending to be a legitimate company, asking for credit or debit card details - for example on the pretence that they need to refund overpaid bills. 4. Doorstep selling - victims are offered goods door-to-door or from the back of a van, which are likely to be counterfeit. Fraudsters selling mattresses, “fresh” fish and cleaning products were all reported to Citizens Advice. 5. Upfront payment or fee - fraudsters ask for a payment in advance for a service or product that never materialises, such as asking for a fee to get a loan, or to pay for a training course to secure a job. 6. Premium rate texts - victims inadvertently agree to receive premium rate texts about games or competitions, usually costing around £4 each. 7. Counterfeit goods - people buy goods at marketplaces or online that turn out to be counterfeit or even stolen. Common products include cigarettes, shoes and clothing, and tickets for events. 8. Goods not received - people place orders for goods which don’t arrive. Scams are often carried out through social media and online auction sites.

School news

Boston Grammar School Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk

Bicker Preparatory School Staff and children at Bicker Preparatory School and Early Years had a wonderful surprise at the end of term when two ladies from the Parents’ Association arrived with a large cheque for £5,000 to be put towards ICT refurbishment over the summer. Headteacher Mrs Julie Miles said, “We knew they had been working hard to raise money for the refurbishment, but we were quite overwhelmed by the amount donated. We have already embarked upon a large refurbishment programme so the donation will be put to good use. We are extremely grateful for all their hard work and support.”

Monday the 20th June started early for four pupils and their teachers as they headed to London for the final of the Junior Team Maths Challenge. Approximately 2000 schools entered the regional events throughout the country and 88 teams were invited to take part in the National Final. The Final was held in Lindley Hall in Westminster – owned by the Royal Horticultural Society. The pupils did themselves and the school proud achieving the 46th position overall. “We are all so proud of the boys and this amazing achievement. To come in the

top 50 of a hugely popular competition is a major achievement for a small school like ours and demonstrates the amazing talents of the students at our school”, said Mrs Cooper, Head of Mathematics at the school. Pictured below is the Boston Grammar School team and their teacher.

Boston College The annual Student Electrotherapy Beauty Therapist Award recognises the best student electrotherapists in the whole of the UK. This year marked the 10th year of SEBTA, sponsored by Carlton Professional, and Boston College is extremely proud to be home to the winner of this year’s title, Theresa Nelson. Six student finalists and their lecturers were invited to stay overnight in Brighton, where the awards were hosted, and enjoyed an evening being wined and dined by The Carlton Group before attending the grand final on Thursday 16th June. On the day of the final, each of the students had to perform a treatment in front of a panel of renowned judges, giving them the perfect opportunity to make their decision on the winner before the awards’ ceremony. Theresa Nelson, from Boston College, impressed the panel of renowned judges so much so that it gained her the title of SEBTA 2016 winner. On this achievement,

she said, “SEBTA 2016 has been an amazing experience. Winning is just a bonus! I have met so many lovely people and the atmosphere has been so friendly. I have just finished college but my plan is to set up my own mobile business and am keen to specialise in facials and massage. I know that this award is going to help me do that. Ultimately, I would like to teach. SEBTA has been an experience I will never forget. I have learned so much from it.” By winning this title, Theresa took home an abundance of prizes, for herself, her lecturer, and Boston College. Along with the title she gained, she also took £500 and a Carlton Professional Ultraderm machine home. As a direct result of Theresa’s success, Boston College now have recognition via the SEBTA College Winner Logo and SEBTA College Trophy. Sam Cropley, Theresa’s supporting lecturer also left with a prize for her dedication and training of £250.

dancer and a hip hop song writer. The project also included the actors attending an acting workshop at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, and the visit to the Stomp musical show in London. The hard work of the students and teachers and from Art and Design, Drama, Dance, English, Media and Music led to 4 performances of Romeo and Juliet and all of the different art forms and workshops came together to produce an outstandingly original show. 250 Year 5 students also enjoyed the show during a special Primary school performance. This show forms part of the case study that the Giles Academy is putting together to work with the Art Council England organisation on their

ArtsMark scheme. Other cultural events this term have included a Sixth Form Art Exhibition opening for students and friends, a Lower School Arts Showcase including an art exhibition and music and dance from Years 7 and 8 pupils. On the last day of term we also enjoyed our arts and culture GFest festival. Over 500 Year 5 pupils came to the academy for a day of activities including art, photography, swimming and science. The day also included a lunchtime concert of singing, music and dance.

Only weeks ago the River Seine rose 6.1 metres above its normal level and more recently West Virginia experienced its worst floods in more than 100 years.

There are four critical benefits to be gained with the inclusion of a sea lock; navigational safety, the future of Boston’s regeneration prospects, the reduced possibilities of freshwater flooding and the installation of a vital part of the Fenland Waterways Link. It would appear that Boston, no longer to be dictated to by a European bureaucracy is now being dictated to by one of our own making; a national bureaucracy which places more faith in its limited modelling exercises than the opinions of those with years of river experience and common sense. How tragic for the town and surrounding area that its destiny is currently being decided by the EA with its own agenda and a total disregard for this once in a lifetime opportunity for the regeneration of Boston and its businesses at such a crucial time in its history.

The Richard Glen report The Richard Glen report is a comprehensive and very detailed report explaining the many aspects of such an important construction in Boston. It comments on the Barrier lock as follows:‘A lock adjacent to the barrier, which operates in-conjunction of excluding the high tide, will provide greater benefits for ease of navigation for both inland and maritime craft, improved accessibility to the Wash and greater regeneration potential. The lock could provide additional capacity to sluice water past the barrier as a back up to the barrier operation’. The reduction of a threat from tidal flooding in Boston is a priority but another priority is the continued safe navigation on the Haven that has been the right of river users for centuries. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 17

Look after your eyes Because our eyesight changes as we age, almost all of us will need to wear glasses or contact lenses by the time we’re 65.

I

f you have regular eye tests, wear the right lenses and look after your eyes, there’s a better chance your sight will remain clear.

Have regular eye tests An eye test can pick up eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataracts, as well as general health problems, including diabetes and high blood pressure. The good news is that if you’re 60 or over, you can have a free NHS eye test every two years. You can have a free test every year if you’re 70 or over. However, a 2011 survey from Age UK showed that nearly 2 million people over 60 did not take advantage of free eye tests in the previous two years.

Keep your eyes healthy There are several things you can do to keep your eyes as healthy as possible: v Eat well. Eating a healthy, balanced diet is important for your eyes. Eating plenty of vegetables and fruit will benefit your overall health and may help protect against some

conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. v Wear sunglasses. Strong sunlight can damage your eyes and may increase your risk of cataracts. v Quit smoking. Smoking can increase your chances of developing conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. v Stay a healthy weight. Being overweight increases your risk of diabetes, which can lead to sight loss. v Use good lighting. To see well, your eyes need three times as much light when you’re 60 as they did when you were 20. Increase the daylight in your home by keeping windows clean and curtains pulled back. Make sure you have good electric lighting too, especially at the top and bottom of stairs so you can see the steps clearly. For reading or close work, use a direct light from a flexible table lamp, positioned so the light is not reflected by the page and causing glare. v Exercise. Good circulation and oxygen intake are important for our eye health. Both

Wear the right lenses It’s important to wear the correct prescription lenses. This will improve your quality of life and reduce the risk of accidents such as falls. According to Age UK’s research, poor vision was a factor in 270,000 falls in people over the age of 60 in the previous two years.

of these are stimulated by regular exercise. v Sleep well. As you sleep, your eyes are continuously lubricated and irritants, such as dust or smoke, that may have accumulated during the day are cleared out.

Eye problems as you get older As you get older, you become more likely to get certain eye problems: v Difficulty reading. Eye muscles start to weaken from the age of 45. It’s a natural ageing process of the eye that happens to us all. By the time you’re 60, you’ll probably need separate reading glasses. v Floaters. These tiny specks or spots that float across your vision are normally harmless. v Cataracts. Easily detected in an eye test, this gradual clouding of the eye’s lens is extremely common in over-60s. A simple operation can restore sight. v Glaucoma. This is related to an increase in pressure in the eye that leads to damage of the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. Left untreated, glaucoma leads to tunnel vision and, ultimately, blindness. v Macular degeneration. This is a disease of the retina caused by ageing. The retina is the nerve tissue lining the back of your eye. There are two types of macular degeneration. The first type, called dry macular degeneration, gets worse very slowly. The other type gets worse very quickly. This needs to be seen as an emergency in a hospital eye unit for prompt treatment.

Family life

Learning starts at home Early learning starts at home with babies and young children. As parents we teach our children social and behavioral skills as well as helping them to learn about the world that surrounds them. Many of the instinctive things we do help to teach them about the world and give them skills to prepare them for school and early learning. Can We Get the Work/Life Balance? It’s not easy juggling work and family that’s for sure. You can find yourself thinking you need to pick up nappies and make a Red Riding Hood cape for dress up day at school during a meeting and then find yourself thinking about that presentation you have to write when you should be playing tea parties with your little one. You can feel pulled in two directions and it’s hard to know how to get a balance. Here are our top 10 tips for creating a work life balance that works for you: Organise childcare you’re happy with. If you’re worrying about your child’s health and happiness while you’re at work, there’s no way you’ll be able to do your job properly. Find childcare that you and your child are happy with. If you’re lucky enough to have a support network of family and/or friends living nearby, make an informal agreement that you can call on them to help if your child’s ill. If you do not have a support network within family and friends there are still many options available to you such as nurseries, childminders or even discussing with your employer the options of flexi-hours so you and your partner could still both work but share the childcare?

Ignore the bad press Don’t bother reading pointless news stories based on ‘latest research’ and blaming working mothers for damaging their

child’s health/intelligence/long-term prospects. It just piles on unecessary guilt. These are the two things that matter: you know why you’re working and your children know you love them.

Don’t do everything yourself They say ‘women can have it all’ but in reality you’ll just fall over if it’s down to you to keep all the plates spinning and do everything yourself. Get help - from your partner, your family, the in-laws...Put systems in place to get everyone in the house to help. Don’t try to be superwoman.

Get organised Leave as little as possible to the manic mornings: pack bags and get clothes ready the night before. Buy enough school clothes and children’s socks and underwear so you’re not a slave to the washing machine every evening. Have a ‘grab and go ‘ spot for keys, purse etc. Give yourself a break You can only do what you can do. Be kind to yourself and don’t be too hard on yourself. It doesn’t matter if your home’s not immaculate. There will be days when you feel guilty and wish you could be the parent helper on the school trip when you had to work and equally there will be days when you feel guilty as you were knackered after a night with a poorly child and didn’t feel you gave it your all at work.

yourself and try to make a clear line between the two roles. Make the most of weekends and holidays for family time. Switch off from work and cherish those times. They go by so fast after all.

Cherish the good things about working Apart from the money which pays the bills, hold onto the great things about your working day. It could be something as simple and everyday as having a good laugh with work mates, drinking a coffee without having a small child clamouring to eat the chocolate on top, having your boss praise you or simply having five minutes to read your book on the train. Similarly take time to hold onto the most magical parts of being a mummy too. There is room for both if you plan your time to make it work. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 21

Home Insurance

H

ow much are you getting paid to take out home insurance? That’s right, PAID! The record so far this year from my cheap home insurance system is £23 profit – and the all-time record is £67 profit. So can you beat it? Of course not everyone can make a profit, yet the same steps that lead you to that can slice huge amounts off the cost of many people’s insurance, so it’s worth doing anyway. The most important thing to understand is that there is no one cheapest home insurer. This is all about how each company reacts to your own particular risk. Therefore, the only way to find it is to follow a system. My detailed cost cutting strategy is at www.mse.me/homeinsurance and a month ago someone told me they’d use it to get contents insurance for £3 – so I challenged the rest of my users to see if they could beat it. Ian came back saying he could trump it: “Paid £32 and have £55 cashback confirmed, so I should have £23 profit”. That’s now my record result in 2016, now the challenge is open to you to beat it.

1

KNOW HOW MUCH COVER YOU NEED There are two elements to home insurance: buildings and contents cover. An easy way to work out which each covers is to imagine you can turn your home upside down: everything that stays put is buildings, if it falls, it’s contents. Though if you need both, it’s usually best to get a joint policy, as it stops arguments between insurers over who covers what if there’s a problem. - Don’t over cover with Buildings Insurance. This is only usually needed by freeholders. If you rent or have a leasehold property it’s usually the landlord/freeholder who should have this. You’re meant to cover the rebuild cost – how much it would cost to rebuild your home should it get knocked down. But many wrongly cover market value, the amount it might sell for – which is often far higher. To find out how much you should cover see the calculator at http://abi.bcis.co.uk/ - Don’t under cover contents insurance. Most people have far more contents than they think. Walk around the house and add everything up (there’s a calculator on www.directline.com). Yet many underinsure thinking: “I’ve £40k of stuff, but will only cover £20k as I’d never claim it all.” 22 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

MARTIN LEWIS

However, if you do then claim, say for a £1,000 TV, the assessor may say: “You’ve only covered half your stuff, so we’ll only pay you out half.” It’s also worth considering fitting a secure lock, such as a five-lever mortice deadlock. The insurance saving means it can pay for itself, and cuts costs for years to come.

2

NEVER AUTO-RENEW. START BY COMBINING COMPARISON SITES If you just auto-renew, you’ll often be fined for apathy. Insurers bump up prices just because they can get away with it. And currently prices are rising, so this will be more noticeable. Comparison sites search a wide range of offers from insurers and brokers. Yet they don’t all search the same deals, or even have the same prices for the same deals. So use two or three. My current order to get the widest spread is www.Confused.com, www. CompareTheMarket.com, www.GoCompare. com and www.moneysupermarket.com. You may even be surprised that your current insurer turns up top of the list with a new customer quote that’s cheaper than your renewal. As Vicki emailed me: “My renewal quote was £700+. Using comparison sites got it to £188 with a better policy. Thanks.”

3

STEP 3: THEN CHECK INSURERS THAT COMPARISON SITES MISS Now you’ve a price benchmark, let’s try to smash it. Big insurers www.Aviva.co.uk and www.DirectLine.com are not included by comparison sites, so check them too. Comparison sites also tend to miss out special promo deals that insurers offer, so it’s worth checking out if there are any of these as well. There’s a daily updated list of hot home deals at www.mse.me/homeinsurance (which also includes special policies if you’ve high value contents).

4

IF YOU WANT TO STAY WHERE YOU ARE, HAGGLE Once you’ve found your cheapest policy take the price to your existing provider and ask them to see if they will match it – they often will. In a recent poll I did, 78% of customers who haggled with Direct Line said they had success, while 81% did with Admiral and 80% with Hastings Direct. So it’s worth a try. As Pat Olver tweeted me: “@MartinSlewis Sainsbury’s home insurance renewal £252. Same policy on confused was £186. Rang Sainsbury’s, talked them down to £181.”

5

IF YOU’RE MOVING, ONCE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE GETTING, CHECK FOR CASHBACK Once you know your cheapest policy and, crucially, you’ve checked IT’S RIGHT FOR YOU, then see if you can earn cashback using a cashback site such as www. Topcashback.co.uk or www.Quidco.com. These sites pay you if you click through them. This usually works, but there can be tracking issues, so see this as a likely added bonus and always check ensure you’re getting the right policy. If you’ve got time and your top three policies are all much of a muchness, it can be worth seeing the cashback on offer for all three.

Final word of warning! And a final word of warning, beware paying monthly, it’s actually just a loan. In effect, the insurer pays upfront then loans you the cash, sometimes at hideous interest (e.g., Endsleigh’s 39.7% APR). If

you can’t afford to pay upfront, check the APR. If it’s high, you’re often better on your credit card, or, better still, get a 0% credit card (just ensure you pay it off within the year).

Fencing Your Boundary! Choosing a good fence is important to the exterior design of your house and its functionality

O

ne of the main reasons why people put up fences is for privacy although there are many other factors. The privacy factor is also crucial to the kind of fence that you choose. Here is a simple guide to the different types of fences:

Aluminium fences Aluminium fencing is quite popular and inexpensive. It can be designed to look just like most of the other fencing material. However, aluminum is not very strong and does not provide enough security as you may look for in a fence. It is not recommended for use in severe weather. On the plus side, aluminium is very easy to maintain.

Wood fences Wood is one of the oldest fencing materials and has stood the test of time due to its aesthetics, durability and great functionality. It still remains one the most popular types of fencing because of the amount of privacy it provides with its wide panels and great height. It is very attractive since it can be carved and painted into any of a variety of colours. Wood fencing has a warm and welcoming feeling without being too expensive. With good

maintenance, wood fencing can easily last as long as the lifespan of your home.

Wrought iron fence Wrought iron fences are great if you want some funky designs on top of your fence. Wrought iron is a strong and beautiful fencing material. They are great as a security measure since they are virtually indestructible. Wrought iron fencing have only one disadvantage, like wood fencing, they also require constant upkeep to prevent discoloration and rusting. You will need to repaint your fences at least once every two or three years.

Chain link fences Although they do not add much privacy, chain link fencing is one of the functional fencing material. Chain link fences are very popular in

ALUMINIUM Popular & inexpensive applications where functionality overrules aesthetics, they are easy on the eye too. Chain link is cheap, durable, easy to maintain and repair and suitable in a variety of applications such as pet enclosures, park enclosures, pool enclosures, school and playground fencing among many other functions.

Secure Your Home during the Holidays With schools soon to break up, we look ahead for a summer of fun. However, it’s unfortunately also a fruitful period for burglars and opportunist thieves. If you are planning to be away during the summer before you leave just double check that all keys and valuables are well hidden from sight, and leave a few lamps on timers so that when night falls it will look like you’re home, deterring

M PS LEAVE LA RS ON T I M E 24 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

any potential thieves who prey on empty properties over this busy social weekend. If you already have an intruder alarm, remember to let a trustworthy neighbour know that you’re away and if the alarm goes off to call you or a family member whom you might have left your key with. You may be close to your neighbour, like many of us are, and then feel safe to leave a spare key with them ‘just in case’. If you don’t feel like you have a neighbour whom you can trust, then you might want to consider an alarm monitoring service, whereby a professional security provider will monitor your alarm. Amanda Chesson from GBSG comments; “At GBSG we provide this service too many homeowners as it gives them peace of mind that if the alarm was to be activated someone will be alerted. For some clients who are away for

long periods we also act as the keyholder and will respond to any alarm activation on their behalf. “Increasingly homeowners are needing more from their security systems. At GBSG we can design an intruder alarm system that helps with home management to provide you with extra reassurance whilst you’re away from home. For instance, you may be an hour into your car journey when you remember that you haven’t switched the heating off – with our advanced integrated systems you would be able to access the system simply via your smartphone. The same for lights – if you forget to set timers you can control lighting remotely from your smartphone, from anywhere and at any time. Such a system helps with peace of mind as you can check the activity happening in your home at any time of the day. Not only helping when you are away on holiday, but also on a daily basis – you could check that the kids have left for school on time and similarly arrive home on time.”

W

ell, it’s a sport utility vehicle (SUV) with a chassis more similar to a car than a traditional truck-based SUV. Most come with either two or four-wheeldrive, and having the fundamental elements of a car means a more contented ride. They also tend to return better fuel economy because of lighter construction and smaller engines. Suzuki’s SX4 S-Cross is one of the better value choices of this type of motor, although you may not have heard much about it. That’s because the Japanese automaker is a fairly small player within the UK car scene. Suzuki punches pretty hard above its weight though and, if the S-Cross is anything to go by, the manufacturer is only going to grow in strength in Britain. It’s a well made machine, packed with equipment and, even at flagship level, it only costs £25,149. The SX4 S-Cross’s bold and sporty design offers ample room for passengers and luggage. The front seats offer excellent support and hold you firmly in place, even on tight curves. Behind the wheel, the instrument cluster, although surrounded by a little too much cheap looking plastic, helps you focus on driving. For instance, an outsized speedometer and tachometer border a multi information display that shows anything from fuel consumption to time and outside temperature. High-rigidity in a car’s body is essential to handling, comfort, safety and performance. That’s why the SX4 S-Cross incorporates 26 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

The engine options are 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel. I drove the latter, in top of the range SZ5 DDiS 120 guise and equipped with Suzuki’s four-wheel-drive ALLGRIP system. The four-wheel-drive technology leaves no room for doubt that the SX4 S-Cross is the perfect fusion of family-friendliness, safety and performance. Don’t get me wrong, it’s no hardcore mud-plugger, but it’ll handle dirt, grass, snow, sand and a bit more – so it’s perfect for mini-adventures. The four-wheel-drive system is so adept because it has a variety of settings – AUTO, SPORT, SNOW, and LOCK. Price: £25,149 centre console. It works like this: AUTO prioritises fuel economy in typical driving conditions. The system uses two-wheel-drive by default and will switch to four-wheel-drive if wheel spin is detected. The SPORT setting is best for twisty roads. It makes maximum use of four-wheel-drive in response to how hard you press the accelerator. The SNOW option is optimal for snowy, unpaved and other slippery surfaces and uses four-wheel-drive all the time. LOCK is designed for extricating the car from snow, mud or sand. It does this by distributing high turning power to the rear wheels continually. Safety equipment hasn’t been overlooked either. Features include seven airbags for occupants and the bonnet provides impact absorption which lessens injury if the car hits a pedestrian. In fact, the SX4 S-Cross has been rated one of Europe‘s safest cars, according to independent crash testing results from Euro NCAP, receiving the maximum five-star rating.

Have your say on our Preferred Sites for new housing, employment and other development in South East Lincolnshire As part of a new Local Plan for South East Lincolnshire (the areas of Boston Borough Council and South Holland District Council), we would like to know your views on our Preferred Sites for development over the next 20 years The South East Lincolnshire Local Plan is being produced by Boston Borough Council, South Holland District Council and Lincolnshire County Council working in partnership and will guide the development and use of land in the area up until 2036.

All are welcome to attend any of the venues shown below to talk about any town, village or site in the Plan area.

Production of the Local Plan is moving towards its final stages and we are now consulting on our Preferred Sites for development. The consultation period will run until Friday 12 August 2016 and there are still a number of ‘drop-in’ sessions to come across the area.

n Sites for future business use to assist in the creation of 17,000 jobs that will be needed in South East Lincolnshire

Residents and business representatives are being invited to come along and have their say on our Preferred Sites for new housing, employment and other development to take place over the next 20 years.

The Local Plan identifies a need to plan for: n 18,000 new dwellings across the area

n New primary and secondary school provision in Boston, Spalding and other settlements This is the last chance you will have to comment on the prospective location of such development.

Come along and have your say You can find out more about the Preferred Sites for development, and give your views, at the following drop-in sessions: Friday 29 July

Tuesday 2 August

Wednesday 3 August Pinchbeck

Library, Knight Street

Friday 5 August

The Policies Map Insets - which indicate our Preferred Sites for development are available to inspect on our website: www.southeastlincslocalplan.org, at each council’s offices or at any of the area’s libraries. Cllr Peter Bedford, current Chairman of the South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee, said: “This chance to comment on the Preferred Sites proposed in the Local Plan is perhaps the most important as it is the last opportunity before it is re-drafted in preparation for its final version for examination by a planning inspector. Take the opportunity to get involved in whatever way you can.”

Let us know what you think… You still have time to comment on the Preferred Sites for development: n
