Welcome to the January issue Happy New Year! I am sitting here writing my welcome thinking once you receive the magazine through your door, Christmas will be all over! I love the break over Christmas and New Year, we try to make as few plans as possible so we can take the time to relax and enjoy being at home. For me Christmas is all about family, we tend to alternate between my family and the in-laws each year. Either way it’s a house full and that’s what I love, a busy festive period. But now it’s all about the new year and as we head into 2017 we can look back on the past year and plan our resolutions for the next one. There’s all the usual ones – lose weight, learn a new skill, get fit, get a better work/life balance but mine is only for a month and it is to cut down on my phone use. We all spend so much time with these small devices in our hand that we miss out on what’s happening in front of us, so I am deleting any social media apps from my phone for January and seeing how much time I gain…I think I’m going to be surprised. I haven’t managed to convince my husband to do the same as yet! This issue is stuffed full of features to help inspire you. NEWS

Ensure you have dog poo bags in readiness for new rules Extra supplies of FREE dog poo bags are on order by Boston Borough Council ready for the introduction of tougher new rules on February 1. The council will do its best to make a free supply available, but it remains the responsibility of the person walking the dog to be sure they have equipped themselves to clean up and to show that they have the intention to do so if challenged. Failure to do so could see a £100 fine imposed from February 1. The council will do its best to ensure FREE bags are available, but, should they not be, this will not be an acceptable reason for failure to clean up. Dog poo bags are not expensive and are available from shops. Some people like to use scented nappy bags. From February 1 those walking dogs could face a £100 fine if they cannot demonstrate their intention to clean up after their pet. If challenged they will have to produce a bag to show they are equipped to pick up. Although Boston Borough Council approved new fines under new Public Spaces Protection Order legislation in October, residents are being given until February 1 to get used to the new regime. Signs are going up in public areas to give notice of the new rules – doubling of fines from £50 to £100 for failing to clean up after a dog, if a dog walker cannot show that they have with them the means to clean up, allowing a dog into an enclosed children’s play area or refusing to put a dangerous or nuisance dog on a lead.

The new powers to control dogs are being introduced under the Anti-social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014 which allows councils to create a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO). Cllr Michael Brookes, the Cabinet member with responsibility for waste services, said: “It is encouraging to note that more people are using our free dog poo bags, and we will do our best to have plenty available. But being in possession of a bag is the responsibility of the dog walker. An failure to clean up because a free council bag was not available will not be accepted as an excuse for not picking up. “The only people this control will affect are the irresponsible dog owners who do not clean up or have consideration for others.” Public consultation showed that 90 per cent were in favour of it being an offence for dog walkers not to carry a bag or the means at all times to clean up after their dog. And 74 per cent agreed the fine should be £100. Dog poo bags are available for free from Boston Borough Council’s Municipal Buildings office and a dispenser in Central Park. They are also available from parish councils and from some village locations, such as shops. Evidence so far indicates that more dog walkers are already doing the right thing – the free dog poo bag dispenser in Central Park has to have its supply replenished every day.

Three years ago it flooded – are you prepared for any emergency? ‘Tis the season to be... aware of flood risk. Around this time, three years ago, the unthinkable actually happened and Boston suffered a catastrophic flood. It happened as a result of an unfortunate coincidence of an extra-large high tide, low air pressure leading to a bulge in the sea surface and a storm driving the tidal waters from the North Sea into The Wash and along the tidal Haven into Boston. The tidal water overtopped the riverbanks and flood defences leading to sudden and dramatic flooding on the night of December 5, 2013, affecting around 900 residential and commercial properties. There are no predictions for these nightmarish conditions to happen again anytime soon. But... there is always a possibility. Flooding isn’t the only emergency which could happen. But preparation is the key whatever the difficulty. When an emergency does happen the emergency services, voluntary sector

and local authorities will be busy helping those people who need them the most. It’s up to you to make sure your family and the people you care about know what to do and that you all have what you need to get through on your own until help arrives. It’s not as hard as you might think. Have a chat with your family and work out what you’ll do using this simple selfhelp guide to help families prepare for times of crisis www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/ lincolnshire-prepared Your community may have a plan in place which can be activated in times of crisis? Would you like to get involved with your local community emergency plan? To find out more and to see if your community has a plan in place or is going through the development stages check on the map here www.boston.gov.uk/ index.aspx?articleid=11480. If no plan exists in your community (shown in white on the map) why not

start one? Community Emergency Plan templates are available to download free here https://www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/ lincolnshire-prepared/Preparing-for-anemergency Community emergency planning is not about leaving you to your own devices until the emergency services arrive, or providing a service to the community instead of an emergency response. It’s about enhancing what we are all trying to do in the first place by saving and preserving life. It’s about giving people the right information at the right time so they can make choices based on this information. Community resilience is about communication, talking to each other, being a good neighbour and then sharing this with the emergency services and local authority so the community can recover more quickly from an emergency. NEWS Rhianna Berry wins gold at WorldSkills UK 2016 Health and Social Care Competition Rhianna Berry, 18, who is currently studying Level 3 Health and Social Care at Boston College, was awarded first place in the Health and Social Care competition at the WorldSkills UK 2016 National Finals, the UK’s largest skills and careers event for young people. The Health and Social Care competition, that was organised by Profiles4Care and sponsored by the NHS Leadership Academy, aims to find the best adult health and social care professionals in the country. Rhianna secured her place in the National Finals of the WorldSkills UK Health and Social Care Competition after scoring highly in the regional round, and went on to compete against seven others, in-front of thousands of visitors, at the NEC in Birmingham. As part of the competition Rhianna took part in eight separate scenarios in which she was presented with a care plan and then had to use her practical skills and knowledge to react to each situation appropriately and provide professional care as if it was real-life. The tasks were based on themes that included: Diabetes, Parkinson’s Wound Dressing, Vital Signs, Dementia, Learning Disabilities Drugs and Alcohol, Stoma Care Infection Control, Basic Life Support, and Mental Health Safeguarding. Independent judges assessed the work of competitors, and selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each

of the 61 skills categories, within which Rhianna was presented with a gold medal at a ceremony on Saturday evening (19th November). Rhianna, who is currently studying Level 3 Health and Social Care at Boston College, was initially entered into the competition by her tutor. Reflecting on her success Rhianna said, “I am really overwhelmed - I don’t think it has sunk in that I am now number one in the UK for Health and Social Care! I know that it’s an amazing achievement, I have thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and the hard work has definitely paid off. I am so grateful to my Lecturers at Boston College – they all have different industry backgrounds and so much experience

which means I have learnt a broad range of hands-on skills and in-depth knowledge as part of my course, but they have also given me excellent support, encouragement and additional training on specific topics, which meant I was well prepared to compete at national level. This experience has definitely improved my professional and clinical skills, as well as my communication, confidence, and methods in caring for people, which will really help me in my future career. I’m now excited and focussed on attending the four university interviews I have been offered with the aim of securing a place on a nursing degree when I have completed my course.” As part of her Health and Social Care course, Rhianna has not only received hands-on skills training at Boston College where industry standard facilities include a dedicated clinical room with equipment such as: a hospital bed, hoist, blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter, and much more, but the College’s excellent links with employers has also enabled her, and her fellow students, to undertake an industry work placement of over 100 hours – gaining first hand, real-life experience. If Rhianna’s success has inspired you to aim your sights high for a career in health and social care visit www.boston.ac.uk to find out more about courses at Boston College.

I

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston

Peter’s Notes

t seems odd to be wishing readers a Happy and Prosperous New Year when I have only just shared mince pies and sherry with fellow councillors to wish them a Merry Christmas! It’s the job of politicians to forever be thinking ahead, but I’d like to take a little time at the start of 2017 to reflect on what happened in 2016. Looking back on the past year it was, on the whole, a good year for Boston. It started in January with consultation with all of you over the local plan. This is an important document which we are still working on which will lay foundations for the future growth and development of the area. Information and consultation events were held throughout January so that your views could be taken on board. We share this work and document with South Holland and it will guide growth and development over the next 20 years. A Government planning inspector is due to consider all our efforts anytime now. For Boston one important detail in this blueprint for the future is protecting the route for the town’s distributor road to help ease traffic congestion – more on this later. February brought the welcome news that plans for construction of Boston’s flood barrier were going ahead as planned. At that time I made an appeal for nothing to happen which might derail progress, after indications that some might pursue a desire for environmental improvements which could impede the main objective of future flood protection. I agreed it would be nice to have “all the bells and whistles” but stressed that flood protection had to come first. I am pleased to report that although a planning inquiry is now to be held, thanks to some earlier fast tracking the £100 million project is still on target for the barrier to be in place by December, 2019. In March I was able to report that the

council had received more Government funding for its groundbreaking Rogue Landlords Scheme. Government recognised the good work being done by the council to tackle poor accommodation provided by landlords in the private-rented housing sector. The council, working with partners such as police, fire service and the Gangmasters’ Licensing Authority, has helped improve living conditions, especially in properties officially designated as HMOs – House of Multiple Occupation. That work continues. Most landlords make the improvements we demand. Those who do not, have found themselves before the magistrates. I was delighted to write in April about the completion of an affordable homes project in Blue Street, Boston. Residents were then moving into the 41 new, modern properties, built with the possibility of future flooding protection in mind. In fact one of the first new families to move in had been flooded out of their previous home. The council continues with its mission to facilitate building of new homes which local people can afford. More will be available this year in Broadfield Lane and Toot Lane. May brought good news of a £200,000 Government grant for the We’ll Meet Again museum at Freiston Shore. The living history museum adjacent to the Second World War defences, some of the best preserved in the country, received recognition for its efforts to educate the generations which did not live through the fight for freedom. It is pleasing to report that Paul and Linda Britchford are making progress with their plans for a bigger, better visitor centre. It is so important that we never forget. I was at the controls of a giant mechanical digger in June, breaking ground on the start of the Quadrant development at Wyberton. Since then a new roundabout has been

built on the A16, opening up the land on either side for residential and commercial development and for construction of a new Boston Utd community football stadium. Most importantly, work is going ahead on the first part of a distributor road to free Boston town centre of some of its traffic congestion. Eventually the Quadrant project will provide 500 new homes, many of which will be affordable, supporting infrastructure, shops and commercial opportunities bringing local jobs. This new gateway to Boston was further enhanced in July with the opening of the SportsBikeShop – a locally-based business which now trades internationally. Next door, work was continuing on a new showroom for Duckworth Land Rover, due to be open anytime soon. Boston College became the highest performing education college in Lincolnshire and community spirit was celebrated after stonework experts Andrew Baker and Ian Stones cleaned the main war memorial in Boston for free. August is traditionally a slow news month as the schools break up and many escape on holiday. Not in Boston. The Blue Street affordable homes development was a winner in the building control excellence awards for the East Midlands. More affordable homes in Argyle Street became fully occupied. And the switch was thrown to fire up the green and energy efficient biomass boilers at the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex and the Princess Royal Sports Arena. Both sites were already benefiting from solar panel arrays on their roofs. Good news came in September that, far from taking trade away from other businesses in the area, the new Marston’s Inn and Tavern pub, The Chain Bridge, was actually generating new trade for all. The Boston Barrier scheme took a significant step forward with submission to the Secretary of State of the Transport and Works Act Order – an essential part of the necessary authorisation to construct the barrier and associated works. Boston also secured its second gold In-Bloom award. October saw me at the House of Commons for two days. One was for the launch of “Water For Growth” – management of flood risk and water resources as a critical factor in enabling economic growth in our area up to 2040. The other day was spent giving evidence to an all-party Parliamentary group investigating social integration. November seemed to be all about December, and gearing up for a great night out in Boston to mark the beginning of the festive season. Lots of free entertainment was planned, a Christmas market and the second annual Illuminate parade, marking the run-up to 2020 and a 400th-year celebration of Boston’s connection with the Pilgrim Fathers, the Mayflower and the founding of Boston, Massachusetts. I make no apologies for wanting to see Boston take every advantage from the opportunities that this global celebration presents. I think, despite austerity, the EU vote and devolution issues, 2016 can be marked down as a good year for Boston. Here’s to more success in 2017 and a Happy and Continuing Prosperous New Year for all of us. Cllr Peter Bedford.

Boston Grammar School Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk

The Senior Team Maths Challenge is organised by the UKMT (United Kingdom Maths Trust), based at Leeds University and the FMSP (Further Maths Support Programme). This annual event allows teams of four students to compete against each other to solve challenging mathematical puzzles, often against the clock! Teams from across the county entered this event that was held at the Priory LSST

in Lincoln. Luke Cocks and Matthew Wearden from Year 13 were joined by James Worthington and Neelay Sant from Year 12. They completed rounds of questions against many of the top schools in the area. They placed 4th overall and were again the highest performing team in the Boston area. The top placed schools were from Leicester Grammar, QEGS Gainsborough Caistor Grammar.

“We are very proud of their achievements; maintaining the schools’ fine record in this difficult competition.”

Boston College After months of preparation, Thursday 1st December saw the final of Boston College’s annual sporting event ‘Elite 11’, the title of which was scooped for the second year running by University Academy Holbeach. ‘Elite 11’ is an inter-school sporting competition involving nine secondary schools from around the county competing against each other in a variety of indoor sporting challenges, ranging from football and netball to golf and darts. Each team comprised of a mixture of 11 boys and girls from years 10 and 11 who competed for the coveted ‘Target Team Award.’ Each individual from the winning team also received a ‘Fitbit Flex’ activity tracker. The attending students were given a celebratory speech in the form of a pre-recorded video from Adam Peaty, Olympic gold medallist and his coach, double Olympian, Melanie Marshall. Adam is the first British swimmer in

24 years to win Olympic gold in the 100m breaststroke and the only swimmer to have completed the ‘grand slam’ of holding all four major gold medals in the same event at the same time. Speaking after the event Amanda Mosek, Boston College Principal said, “Elite 11 has once again been a fantastic event and we were delighted to have 9 schools participating in the event. It’s been an excellent day, and has really shown how much sporting talent there is in Lincolnshire. A big thank you to the event’s sponsors The Target Series, Boston United Football Club, Geoff Moulder Leisure Centre and Freshdrop.” After an action packed day, the scores were counted up and the big announcement of who was taking home the title was made as the medals and prizes were awarded to the top three teams, 1st place University Academy Holbeach, 2nd place Bourne Academy, and 3rd place Haven High Academy.

Daughters of Courage By Margaret Dickinson

at Boston Library

Love blossoms under the storm clouds of war Following the gripping story of the Ryan family in Margaret Dickinson’s top ten bestseller The Buffer Girls, Daughters of Courage sees Emily and Trip fight to keep their new life afloat in the turbulent 1930s. Emily Ryan has gone up in the world since her arrival in Sheffield. Brought there by her mother’s ambitious schemes for her brother, Josh, she had found work as a buffer girl polishing cutlery for the city’s famous trade. With the help of a friend, Nell, Emily eventually set up her own buffing business employing those with whom she had once worked. And then comes the threat of another war . . .

Advice Worth Hearing!!

Y

ou probably have regular check-ups at the dentist and the opticians, but when did you last have your hearing tested? It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about 10 million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually & can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation and has been linked to mental health issues. It can take between 10 & 15 years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision & teeth it is often taken for granted. People often try to compensate for this by asking people to repeat themselves, turning the T.V up etc. It is often a friend or family member that notice beforehand. Sound Advice Hearing can help you hear better again and in turn, help improve your quality of life. If I think I have a problem, how can you help? Going Abroad with your Pets

B

rits wanting to take their pets abroad used to have to put them in quarantine for a period, causing misery to both the animal and owner. But times have changed, and fortunately, provided you comply with the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) you can take your dog, cat – or even ferret – abroad with you, so you don’t have face the worry of placing them in quarantine. What do you need to do? Depending on which country you’re going to, the criteria for the scheme includes: Fitting your pet with a microchip so they can be identified; getting a blood test, vaccination against rabies, and treatment for tapeworm and ticks – and a certificate to prove this; getting an official PET certificate, and signing a declaration of residency. However, bear in mind that pets can only be vaccinated against rabies once they reach a minimum age, which is typically three months. You’ll need to have all the relevant documentation with you when going abroad, as well as checking that your pet insurance extends to cover overseas. Start organising your pet’s trip at least seven months before you leave, as your pet can’t re-enter the UK within six months of having a blood test, and this has to be done at least a month after the rabies vaccination. You’ll need to renew the passport after two years have passed, as that’s how long the vaccination lasts. So what’s the cost? In total, the required vaccinations, blood test and documents cost around £200. If your pet is to travel on a plane, check what extra charges you’ll face. Some airlines allow pets to travel as hand luggage, so they’ll be no extra cost, while others charge a fee – this could be a flat rate, or a sliding scale based on the animal’s weight.

Funeral

Traditions

M

any British funeral traditions and customs that are still alive and thriving today date back to the Victorian era. It was at this time that society developed strict codes of conduct in how a person should be mourned and how their life should be celebrated. Despite the fact that funerals are undergoing a fundamental change, with many people viewing them as a celebration of a person’s life, rather than the mourning of their death.

Funeral announcement It is customary for individuals to announce the death of their loved ones (known as an obituary notice) in a national or local newspaper. Most funerals are open to the public in the UK, unless the family has requested a private, intimate funeral with immediate friends and family only.

Black clothing It is traditional to wear black, smart clothing to a funeral. Men often choose to wear suits. Black has long been the colour associated with mourning, as it has connotations of being respectful. If you have not been told otherwise, it is advised that you choose a predominantly black coloured outfit for the funeral you are attending.

Funeral procession The traditional funeral procession is still popular in the UK today. The procession is lead by the hearse, containing the coffin and the funeral flowers. It is usually followed by the car or limousine driving immediate family of the deceased. Traditionally the funeral director would lead the cortege on foot. This ritual was called ‘paging away.’ Although this is less commonly seen today, some individuals still choose to include the ritual as part of the funeral procession. It is believed this tradition dates back to the times when horses and carriages were the predominate method of transport. Walking in front of the hearse slowly allowed neighbours and passersby to stop and pay their respects.

Funeral flowers Funeral flowers play an important role in funerals, providing beauty and comfort at a time of sadness. Many people also believe that flowers symbolise the continuation of life. Although many people choose funeral flowers based on the favourite flower of their loved ones, others choose flowers based on their connotations and meaning. The flower that is most commonly associated with funeral services is the lily. White lilies are often believed to be a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the deceased. They also symbolise sympathy and purity.

Burial traditions The deceased can either be cremated or buried. During a burial service it is customary to throw soil onto the coffin as it is lowered into the ground. As well as this family members often throw things like flowers and personal items onto the coffin. This ritual is carried out as a symbol of love and remembrance.

Wakes

It is customary to hold a wake, this event is kind of like a small party and is designed to celebrate the life of the deceased. The wake is usually hosted at the house of the deceased’s immediate family, though it can also be hosted at a local pub or hotel. Something that often ends up happening is the telling of old stories. Family members and friends of the person that died usually share fond memories of their loved one. Although wakes are a sad occasion, they provide a chance for families to reunite and remember the good times. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 17

Food & drink special

Eagles Restaurant

W

hen you think of fish & chips in Boston you instantly think of Eagles Fisheries, who have been around since 1954, opened and owned by Mrs Eagles Senior and handed down to her son Mr John Eagles and his lovely wife Viv since 1954 the shop was owned by the Eagles family for fifty years until they decided to retire to the Channel Islands in 2004. As you can see the current image of Eagles (above) is somewhat different to the small terraced property that it started in (below). On the ground floor you will find their frying area, a 60 seater cafe

and take-away counter. On the first floor is the main 120 seater fully licenced restaurant and bar. Offering an extensive menu Eagles really does offer something for everyone, don’t forget there are some great meal deals too – especially the 2 for £12 deal, buy two £8.95 meals and pay just £12.00! Extra parking facilities are available down York Street at Boston United car park. What Our Customers Say “My fiancee and I ate here yesterday in the restaurant. I have to say that from us arriving to departing the staff were attentive, polite and helpful without being overbearing. Unlike many places the eating area was not tightly packed with tables making for a comfortable setting in which to eat.”

Move or Improve?

A

nyone thinking of a relatively large home improvement project weighs up the pro’s and con’s to moving or improving – is it easier, cheaper, more convenient and less disruptive to find their dream home or create it? In order to answer this question you first need to ask why and you need to be honest with yourself. Why are you considering either? What is it that you want to achieve? More space? A change? A new look and feel? Generally there are 3 types of people; pro move, pro improve and those in the middle that can’t decide between the two. Within each type the reasoning behind the end decision differs and typically those that aren’t sure either way aren’t sure because they aren’t aware of all the pro’s and con’s in order to help them make an informed decision. The aim of this article is to highlight all the blatant and hidden considerations to help you make the best decision for you and your

family – don’t be too hasty in your decision, the cons are as important as the pro’s and vice-versa, this article is about finding your happy medium. Con’s to Moving: • Expensive – it may seem like a cost effective solution at first however there are an awful lot of ‘hidden’ and pricey costs, associated with moving: legal fee’s stamp duty, estate agent fee’s to name a few • You have to give careful consideration to your current mortgage situation – will you be able to borrow more and extend your borrowed limit? • A number of external factors impact whether ‘now’ is the right time for you to move – things to consider include the state of the general housing market and the current economic climate. Cons of Improving: • Inconvenience and disruption. Regardless of what you are having done there will be an element of both with a typical home improvement project. Depending on what

“Be careful to ensure that whatever improvement you go with the style and design suits the existing look and feel of your home.”

that improvement is it could be minimal and short or quite extensive and prolonged – a new bathroom vs a double storey extension for example. The secret here is if you opt to improve engage with a trusted and highly reputable building company who will ensure both is kept to a minimum. • Be careful to ensure that whatever improvement you go with the style and design suits the existing look and feel of your home – a traditional Victorian style semidetached would look a little bizarre with a modern 21st century orangery. • Large scale improvement works are generally a result of wanting to create more space but be careful to give consideration to communal areas whilst adding more living space. • There are a number of compulsory elements that are out of your control, cost money and take time. Architectural drawings, planning permission, and building regulations approval – the process usually takes a number of weeks so patience is key.

Pro’s to Moving: • An ideal solution if you don’t have the space and/or facilities to improve the amount of space you have through extending or converting. • A fresh start - new area, new people, new neighbours, new shops, new schools – somewhere different and somewhere exciting • Ability to find your ‘dream house’ – difficult but through moving it is possible to find the house you always wanted Pro’s to Improving: • Make your house, your home – make it yours – it might not be your dream house but that doesn’t mean it can’t be. Home improvements are a great way of giving your home a brand new look and feel. • Already settled? Don’t want to up root your family? Like your neighbours? On the doorstep of your work place and preferable schools? Improve over move all day long. • Typically a be cheaper alternative to moving and, within time, should add value to your property – a lucrative investment • If you have low equity in your property improving it rather than moving would be beneficial. • The list of possible improvements are endless; extensions, conversions, new kitchen, new bathroom, new layout – room conversion and room extensions and external improvements.

Finance

Money Sins

A

re you a sinner? Financially that is. There are a host of everyday money misdemeanours that millions of people do, costing them thousands, without being aware of it. These aren’t horrors like grabbing a payday loan, but the result of simple misunderstandings, bad habits or inaction. So having recently toured around the UK doing roadshows for the sixth series of my ITV show, I’ve collated five of the most common. 1. Saving while you’ve expensive debts Savings rates are depressingly low – the top easy-access rate is 1%. Credit card and other interest rates are depressingly high. So, £1,000 credit card debt at 18% costs it costs you £180 a year, the same amount saved in top paying savings account at 1% interest only earns you £10. If you had both, pay the debt off with your savings and you’d be £170 a year better off. Many of you will be thinking, “but I want to keep my savings, what if the boiler packs up or the roof falls in?” However, that’s a sentimental strategy, not a logical one. Let’s carry on the £1,000 debt and £1,000 savings scenario to show you why. - If you don’t pay the debt off with the savings and an emergency happens that cost you £1,000 to fix, you’d use all your savings and still £1,000 of credit card debt. - If you do pay off the debt

Motoring

H

ybrid vehicles are in vogue these days – or so it appears. Will this technology take over the conventional power plants we know one day? I don’t have the psychic wherewithal to tell you. But a lot of automakers seem to be following this trend – and now it’s Kia’s turn. The all-new Kia Niro hybrid is propelled by an orthodox 1.6-litre GDi petrol engine, paired up with a 32kW electric motor. There’s also a lithium-ion polymer battery where energy is saved. This layout is like with the one in Toyota’s Prius, and manages an official combined mpg of up to 74.3mpg, alongside CO2 emissions starting from 88g/km.

The Niro is larger than its relative, the Cee’d, yet more pocket-sized than its other relation – the attractive and admired Sportage. The all-new Kia Niro is the South Korean car company’s first attempt at a hybrid crossover type of vehicle, but you wouldn’t know. Sure, there are copied elements, such as white plastic adornments inside the cabin, especially around the inner door handles. These are, undoubtedly, inspired by Toyota, but you can let Kia off because every car manufacturer ‘makes use of’ ideas. It’s a fashion thing and, by its very nature, fashion is all about making certain you’re ‘down with the kids’ on the hottest style. The new Kia Niro’s body is rectangular, but it’s not at all disagreeable. The Niro has a simple, fetching form, that has hints of Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) about it. At the front, the Sportage’s genetic material comes through – most markedly around the headlights. What’s more, the rump of the all-new Niro is easy-on-the-eye, with a conventional tailgate decorated with touches of silver trim. The all-new Kia Niro will seat four-adults comfortably, or five at a squeeze. The load area is a decent size – certainly large enough for a regular sized family’s needs. The steering wheel is pleasingly thick to grasp and the switchgear and dials are intuitive and clear to use. The only difference between the Niro and a conventionally powered car is an energy flow meter replacing the rev counter. There’s also a drivetrain pictorial showing the energy stream between the Kia Niro’s engine, battery and wheels. On start-up, the all-new Kia Niro sounds like it’s not turned on. That’s because, as with all hybrids, the engine under the bonnet doesn’t cut in instantly. Instead of any tick-

over sounds, you hear a chime, signifying that the Niro is running. It’s not long before the 105PS petrol powered unit makes its presence known, though. On the road, the Niro delivers eventempered performance, thanks to a six-cog automatic gearbox. And, while the Kia Niro is no out and out performer, the additional power the petrol engine receives from the electric motor is appreciable. The all-new Kia Niro also feels planted and deals with the straights contentedly. It’s only on more blemished B-road surfaces that the Niro’s firm suspension results in a bit of jitteriness. The Kia Niro has to have a stiff set-up, though, to cope with the extra heft of the hybrid assembly. Luckily, there’s a silver lining to every cloud and this firmness means that body lean is hardly noticeable in corners. The all-new Kia Niro hybrid comes in four levels of trim, categorised ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’ and ‘First Edition’. All are well-appointed with driver assistance, comfort, and connectivity features. Every Kia Niro has a lane-keep assist system, hill-start assist control, cruise control and a speed limiter. The new car also comes factory-fitted with support smartphone connectivity, music streaming and a DAB radio.
