I feel a bit mean writing about education in the August issue – it is the summer holidays after all! Nevertheless I’ve done it anyway – it’s such a tough decision for any parent to make. Where is the best nursery or preschool for my child? Which primary? Secondary? College? University?! With every parent having different preferences and priorities, the sooner you start the better!! I’ve balanced it out by including another feature looking at fab days out to take advantage of over the next few weeks. Some days you feel like staying local and others venturing a little further afield so we’ve travelled a little wider this issue. We’re also running a preview of the Holbeach beer and music festival. It’s the first of what the organisers hope will be an annual event and they are working really hard to bring you a family fun weekend for the whole community. It’s running from the 7th – 9th August so if you are around make sure you go and support this good cause. Enjoy the issue.

Art exhibition hailed a success A unique art exhibition held at Ayscoughfee Hall recently has been hailed as a success. Deafblind charity Sense took over the historic venue last month with a river themed exhibition and performance. ‘Poems of the River’ celebrated the achievements of people with sight and hearing impairments from the charity’s Glenside Resource Centre who took part in a six month project with poet Laila Sumpton to create poems, stories, photographs and artwork inspired by rivers. Participants also worked collaboratively with sound artist Daz Disley, to compose sound pieces of creatures found by the river banks, from eels and ducks to herons and rabbits. Their creations were exhibited at the museum, where they also performed the songs and stories they developed during the workshop. Kara Jarrold, Head of Arts & Wellbeing at Sense, said: “Many thanks to South Holland District Council for making it possible for us to showcase ‘Poems of the River’ at the Ayscoughfee Hall Museum. “It was amazing to be able to share with the local community an exciting multi-sensory exhibition that breaks down the barriers for making art for people with sensory loss.” A spokesperson for South Holland District said: “We’re very pleased that this unique and accessible exhibition was a huge success. We always welcome the opportunity to work with

local groups and help promote their work. ” The exhibition was part of Sense’s, Arts & Wellbeing programme, which supports people with sensory impairments at all stages of their involvement in the arts and cultural sector.

Spotless Spalding off to a flyer A new group set up to clear litter from Spalding town centre has got off to a flying start. ‘Spotless Spalding’ was started by Councillor Jack McLean, who was recently elected to represent South Holland District Council. Cllr McLean set up the group after being inspired by the council’s successful Pride in South Holland campaign to clean up derelict sites across the district. The group held its first meeting on June 27. Gathering at the flower beds near High Bridge, the party went on to collect 15 bags of litter. Joining Cllr McLean were several members of the public as well as fellow Councillors Harry Drury and Gary Taylor. Cllr McLean said: “It couldn’t have been a more enjoyable or satisfying experience. When I arrived at the flower beds with the litter pickers I was greeted by a group all ready and waiting. Within minutes we were taking photos and picking spots to head to. We also got lucky with the weather. It made all the difference when turning back to see the difference we had made.” 4 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Meanwhile, the group has also been boosted by a generous donation from Pinchbeck firm 24/7 Personnel Ltd who handed over several eco-friendly canvas bags featuring the Spotless Spalding logo. The group plans to meet on the last Saturday of every month from 6pm at locations around Spalding. You can find more information on facebook.com/ spotlessspalding or jackmclean.campaigningforyou.com you can also contact Cllr McLean on 07761098517 or jmclean@sholland.gov.uk

Leading the way – innovation and new manager roles at South Holland South Holland District Council and Breckland Council are embarking on an exciting new phase of shared management and this week have announced the first phase of recruitment for a range of innovative new roles. The two councils were one of the first to share a Chief Executive and senior management team in a move that has saved £4.4m, reducing the council tax demand on residents, despite reduced Government funding whilst leading to many service improvements. “I am committed to building South Holland District Council as a new ‘free council’, keeping the council tax low and becoming financially independent of

central government funding so we can drive enterprise and community growth for the benefit of local residents and businesses” says council leader Cllr Gary Porter, “and to do so we are launching a drive to bring the best manager talent to our transformational shared management team. “Our future successes, shared with Breckland Council in Norfolk, will be delivered through ambitious political leadership and a determined and entrepreneurial executive management team. “I have tasked the chief executive, with her new executive management team, to deliver a radical and highly practical approach to

Bakker Spalding School Garden Giveaway Spalding company, Bakker Spalding, believe that gardening should form part of every child’s school education. An early interest in a healthy activity such as gardening can provide many hours of enjoyment. Planting seeds and watching them grow helps children learn about the growth process, the environment and the food they eat. Statistics show that in recent years, gardening has grown more and more popular in schools. That’s not really a surprise; gardening is both fun and educational. Already this year, the company have sent over 70 boxes containing a variety of bulbs to school children up and

down the country. They love to hear about pupils planting the bulbs in their school grounds and have received many wonderful photographs and blog posts detailing the fun children have had planting outdoors and then later of course, the reward, when their plants are in full bloom! But they want more schools to benefit from our great giveaway! Want to get involved? There are no school age restrictions – where they can help, they will. If you would like to get involved and receive some free bulbs for your school, please contact Rachel Morgan on r.morgan@bakker.biz

community leadership, together with commercialisation of local services. “Innovation combined with sound financial and resource management skills, is a key priority for all our senior people” commented Cllr Porter. “Our successes to date in cost sharing and efficient joint working mean the council is now operating at the forefront of local government transformation and at the same time strengthening our distinct community identity” concluded Cllr Porter, who has already led the council through key stages of sharing and partnership development. Full details of the 13 senior manager roles and opportunities now available are at www.brecklandsholland.com

Take part in nostalgic event Calling all 1940’s enthusiasts – how would you like to take part in a spectacular nostalgic event this summer? Jointly organised by South Holland District Council and Spalding Remembrance Association, the event has previously attracted over 2,000 visitors. Organisers are currently looking for wartime re-enactors, memorabilia collectors and enthusiasts to play a part in the proceedings. There will be a chance for people to have their own vintage style stalls and displays. The event will also feature a spectacular flypast, remembrance parade and live music. Lincolnshire-wide crackdown on Benefit Fraud launched A campaign has been launched by Councils across Lincolnshire in an attempt to crack down on Housing Benefit fraud and error. A Parliamentary report which looked at the annual expenditure of Housing Benefit in the UK found that most councils were affected by claimant error or deliberate fraud. In Lincolnshire the annual spend on Housing Benefit is £160 million pounds for around 52,500 households. Lincolnshire authorities have joined forces and are working together to support the Government’s bid to cut the cost of fraud and error. The Lincolnshire campaign, called ‘Tell Us’ runs until March 2016. The campaign’s message to Housing Benefit claimants is simple. If you claim Housing Benefit you must tell your Council about all changes in your circumstances, including: Money coming into the home - such as pensions, wages, other benefits or tax credits. People who live in your home. Savings and investments. All Lincolnshire Councils will be checking the Housing Benefit claims being made. As a priority, the initial focus will be on those considered a high risk of not having reported changes which means 6 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

they may have received too much Housing Benefit which will have to be paid back. Whilst most claims will be genuine and correct, the review is essential in order to find those that are wrong. Some residents may have simply forgotten to let their Council know that they have had a change in their circumstances, such as children moving out or leaving full time education, getting a job or a pay increase. Changes such as these should be brought to the attention of their District or Borough Council as soon as possible to avoid claiming the wrong amount of Housing Benefit. Now is the time to notify the Council of a change before fraud investigators take more serious action, which can include prosecution. Cllr Peter Coupland, Portfolio Holder for Finance at South Holland District

Council, said: “Anyone who claims Housing Benefit and has had a change in their circumstances that might affect the amount of benefit they receive should contact their local District or Borough Council immediately. “Most residents will be claiming the correct amount, and therefore do not need to worry. “However, it is an offence not to declare changes in circumstances, and anyone found to be in receipt of Housing Benefit that they are not entitled to may have to pay back the money and could face court action or financial penalty. “Tell Us. We want to help claimants avoid being in such a position.” To report a change in your circumstances, please contact your local Council now: Boston Borough Council - 01205 314202 City of Lincoln Council - 01522 873355 East Lindsey District Council – 01507 601111 North Kesteven District Council 01529 414155 (or 01522 699699 if calling from a Lincoln number) South Holland District Council 01775 761161 South Kesteven District Council 01476 406080 West Lindsey District Council 01427 676565

John Hayes welcomes continued falling unemployment John Hayes has welcomed new figures showing since 2010 the number of people in South Holland and the Deepings claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in May 2015 fell by 1,017 – an incredible 55% drop. John said “these figures demonstrate the Government’s economic policies are working, and the continued fall in unemployment means a more secure future for families in our area. More people in work means more people can provide for themselves and their families. “The unemployment rate in South Holland and the Deepings fell to just 1.7% for May 2015 – better than both the regional and national figures. “Across the UK, there are 2 million more people in work than at the end of the thirteen years of the previous Labour Government. The number of young people without a job has also fallen by 199,000 over the last year. “And in a further boost for the financial security of hard-working families, wage rises grew at their fastest rate since 2011, rising 2.7%.” John said “I’m proud to be part of a Government which is on the side of working people, and these figures represent great news for South Holland and the Deepings, and for Britain as a whole.”

There has been a lot of talk in the press about Unitary Authorities, the whole of Lincolnshire, including Greater Lincolnshire, becoming one authority, replacing the current District and County Councils. It is not going to happen! Government have made it clear that it can only happen with the consent and agreement of all the authorities involved and in Lincolnshire the Districts have made it quite clear that they are not interested. Devolving power is flavour of the moment, with Greater Manchester leading the way with an elected Mayor. Devolving power from central government has got to be a good thing, with more decisions taken locally, but that is very different from having a unitary authority. Discussions on devolving power are now being held between all the chief executives of the Lincolnshire Districts and the County Council, as well as discussions with the blue light services and health, to see how by working even more closely together we can provide better and more efficient services through power devolved to us from central government. While it is an opportunity to be grasped, there will inevitably be pitfalls, but all parties will have to give and take to make it work. If it is to work at all, we are now in for many months of negotiation and discussion – better to get it right than to rush into something we could all regret. South Holland District Council continues with a restructure of its senior management team which when completed will have a strong emphasis on commercialisation, income generation and inward investment, encouraging new businesses into the area, more higher skilled jobs and making South Holland a place where people want to come for both work and leisure. This will clearly need a change in

mindset which is laid out in our new ‘Open for Business’ approach. Details of the new structure and its innovative ideas can be viewed at www.brecklandsholland.com I would like to give a plug to Lincolnshire’s Great Exhibition which runs from 27th June – 27th September in Lincoln at the Usher Gallery, The Collection, Wren Library (Lincoln Cathedral) and the new Magna Carta Vault. I can guarantee that never again will you see such a magnificent collection of art, manuscripts, books and national treasures in one place. Everything you see has a direct connection to Lincolnshire, including several items from the Spalding Gentleman’s Society. It is also free to view in the Collection and Usher Gallery, which holds the bulk of the exhibition. Great works of art include portraits of Sir Isaac Newton, JohnWesley, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Sir Joseph Banks, Matthew Flinders, George Stubbs and Margaret Thatcher. The Luttrell Psalter with lavish colour illustrations dating to 1325 is simply stunning. Matthew Flinder’s map of Autralia, the Kings Champion Saddle and gauntlets are a fascinating part of our history and Lincolnshire’s influence around the world. Works of art have come from the Royal Collection, The British Library, National Archives, Victoria and Albert Museum, National Portrait Gallery and numerous private collections from some of Lincolnshire’s great country houses. Not to be missed!

Maximise Your House Value ❱ BY HAYLEY HAMMOND, SIMPLY PROPERTY

Y

our home is probably the highest value commodity you have, yet so many people put their property on the market without a thought of how to ensure they achieve the highest offer possible. You wouldn’t sell a car caked in mud and full of rubbish, so why not spend some time at looking where you can spruce up your property. Every property is different but as a general rule of thumb adding rooms, uPVC windows and doors, a modern kitchen and a new bathroom you will be ticking the boxes for key areas that buyers look for, and where you can add value to your home. I’m not saying you should spend thousands on a full makeover of your property but look at your home through buyer’s eyes and identify where you feel the property could be improved. Windows & Doors If you already have uPVC doors and windows, are all the seals intact? If any have ‘blown’ then contact a specialist company to repair them. It will probably cost less than £200 to have half a dozen repaired but can be a red flag to buyers and they leave your viewing thinking it needs all new windows…knocking £10,000 in their minds off the value. If you have wooden windows, why not get some quotes for uPVC, you can pass this information to your agent and explain to potential buyers new windows in fact will cost much less than they have in their mind. Kitchens Is your kitchen tired? Why not think about a facelift? Changing handles, doors and/or worktops can instantly update an older looking kitchen. It can all be done for under £1000 for an average sized kitchen if you shop around when there are seasonal offers. Bathrooms A white bathroom suite can be purchased from a DIY store for about £250 and can make the world of difference in the look of this important room. is kept light as bathrooms are often the smallest room in the house – give the impression of space. Extensions Now, this would be a big project and one you need to carefully calculate but if the numbers stack up, think about adding space onto your home. Some extensions can potentially reap back double the outlay. Look at other properties in your area, have any others been extended and then sold? What value did they add? Could you covert a garage into a room? Or go into the loft space? It’s all about return on investment here. Other top tips for marketing your property 3 Give the garden a tidy and ensure the front of your home has kerb appeal 3 Wipe down any skirting boards and doors. If your gloss paint is looking yellow, give it a fresh coat. 3 Touch up any marks on walls 3 Make sure everywhere is neat and tidy – that includes, garages, loft space and sheds, you never know where a buyer may want to look!

Why it is important to make a will ❱ BY LISA BARWELL It is important for you to make a will whether or not you consider you have many possessions or much money. It is important to make a will because:• if you die without a will, there are certain rules which dictate how the money, property or possessions should be allocated. This may not be the way that you would have wished your money and possessions to be distributed • unmarried partners and partners who have not registered a civil partnership cannot inherit from each other unless there is a will, so the death of one partner may create serious financial problems for the remaining partner • if you have children, you will need to make a will so that arrangements for the children can be made if either one or both parents die • it may be possible to reduce the amount of tax payable on the inheritance if advice is taken in advance and a will is made • if your circumstances have changed, it is important that you make a will to ensure that your money and possessions are distributed according to your wishes. For example, if you have separated and your ex-partner now lives with someone else, you may want to change your will. If you are married or enter into a registered civil partnership, this will make any previous will you have made invalid. If you are in any doubt as to whether or not you should make a will, you should consult a solicitor or a Citizens Advice Bureau who can give you lists of solicitors. If you are a member of a trade union, you may find that the union offers a free will writing service. A union will often use its own solicitors to undertake this work. There are books which provide guidance on how to draw up a will. These can help you decide if you should draw up your own will

and also help you decide if any of the preprinted will forms available from stationers and charities are suitable. It is also possible to find help on the internet. Will-writing services are available. However, will-writing firms are not regulated by the Law Society so there are few safeguards if things go wrong. If you decide to use a willwriting firm, consider using one that belongs to The Institute of Professional Willwriters which has a code of practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute Consumer Codes Approval Scheme (CCAS). Traders in this scheme display the TSI approved code logo. When you see the logo it means that the trader has agreed to provide good standards of service including clear information before a contract is signed, a clear complaints procedure and access to alternative dispute resolution (ADR) scheme for settling out of court. Search for a will writing firm belonging to The Institute of Professional Willwriters, approved by the Trading Standards Institute Consumer Codes Approval Scheme (CCAS).

How much does a solicitor cost The charges for drawing up a will vary between solicitors and also depend on the complexity of the will. Before making a decision on who to use, it is always advisable to check with a few local solicitors to find out how much they charge. You may have access to legal advice through an addition to an insurance policy which might cover the costs of a solicitor preparing or checking a will. The charity Will Aid has set up a partnership between certain solicitors and nine well-known charities. Every November, participating solicitors will write a basic will free of charge in return for a donation to Will Aid. The suggested minimum donation is £90 for a basic single will or £135 for a pair of identical wills for a couple. More information about Will Aid, together with details of participating solicitors, is available at www. willaid.org.uk. It is also worth you giving some thought to what you want to say in the will before seeing a solicitor. This should help reduce the costs involved.

Suicide! Would you be able to ask the question “Are you thinking of suicide?”

One in 20 people at any one time in Britain are having thoughts of suicide and Lincolnshire figures have been higher than the national average. As ASIST Lead for Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Rita Blackler is determined to help save lives... “We want to spread increased suicide awareness throughout the county, particularly in areas where there has been a high suicide rate. As a county we are working really hard with lots of organisations coming together to bring the suicide figures for Lincolnshire right down. People are often frightened to ask if someone is having thoughts of suicide as they fear they won’t know how to help if the answer is “Yes!” The majority of people who take their own lives don’t actually want to die they just want to be free of the pain and situation they are in. The more we talk about suicide, the more we can affect change. If the stigma and the taboo can be reduced, people at risk will hopefully talk to someone about their feelings and will find reasons to stay alive. There is often a lot of shame and guilt

attached to suicide because people feel they could or should have spotted the signs and done something to help, especially when it’s someone close to them”. If you would like to be ready, willing and able to save a life please consider enrolling on one of our courses: ASIST: A two consecutive-day training course teaching ‘suicide first aid’ to keep someone safe. safeTalk: A three and a half hour suicide awareness course.

To find out more about either of these courses which are free for those who live or work in Lincolnshire please contact the ASIST administrator Maureen Toogood by calling 01529 416251 or email Maureen.Toogood@LPFT.nhs.uk

School News

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school?

Ayscoughfee Hall School It has been a very busy summer term! The sports teams have been excelling, particularly on the cricket and rounders pitches. The Under 11 cricket team won the Spalding Schools tournament and the Regional Play Off finals before competing in the County finals in Lincoln. Here they competed superbly, finishing fourth out of the ten best Lincolnshire school

teams. The Under 9 team is also shaping up very well with a great win over The Peterborough School in their latest fixture. The mixed rounders team also won the Spalding Schools tournament and, as at the time of writing, are going on to represent South East Lincolnshire in the County finals. In School, and having received a framed copy of Magna Carta in a ceremony at Lincoln Cathedral, the children celebrated the 800th birthday of this iconic document with a day of related activities. Dressed as 13th century peasants, the children started the day with an assembly where they learnt about Magna Carta, the changes it brought and the relevance of it today. They then enjoyed various

activity sessions including archery with Elite Sports, quill pen writing, medieval dance and basic Latin. Year 6 children have been ‘doing their bit’ for the community over the summer term with the introduction of a new ‘Life Skills’ initiative. The class had been divided into groups of 5 children and had spent Friday afternoons rotating around a variety of community based projects. Although the school prides itself on academic and sporting success, the idea of the Life Skills Challenge is that it extends the children further, helping to further develop their social skills and to see the importance of putting something back into society.

Spalding High School This term is proving busy again for Spalding High School! The rounders team have enjoyed success, having hosted the Year 10 District Rounders tournament. After narrowly losing their first game to University Academy Holbeach, the High School girls needed to win their next two matches in order to stand any chance of topping their league and reaching the final. An improved team performance in game two against Sir John Gleed School ensured a victory against our neighbours. The final rounders game of our league was played against Bourne Academy 1. In a magnificent display of rounders the High School girls dominated the game, eventually winning 8½ rounders to 0 leaving the league to be decided on the number of rounders scored against the number of rounders conceded and the High School girls superior advantage ensured a final against the other league winners, Bourne Grammar School. With confidence high in the team after two consecutive victories the High School girls gave another commanding performance winning the tournament with a 4½ to 8½ victory. The girls will now go on to represent the district at the Sainsbury’s Schools Games finals on 8th July. Meanwhile Year 8 students have spent the year

fundraising for the popular citizenship programme, G NATION. The programme is used in schools nationwide with the aim of students becoming actively involved in charitable giving. Having worked together on ideas for the organisation of their fund raising activities, the students held various events both within and outside of school. Events included the ever popular cake stalls, Mother’s Day stalls, Valentine card making, a milkshake stall, bag packing at a local supermarket and even selling carrots to give to the reindeer at Baytree Nurseries! A trophy and prize are presented to the form raising the most money. This year the trophy was presented to form 8C for raising an impressive £890 to be split between Great Ormond Street, RSPCA, Cancer Research, Kidney Research and Make a Wish. In total the five Year 8 forms raised over £2300 to be split between local and national charities.

Holbeach Primary Academy Congratulations to Year 4 for winning 1st prize in the Schools Challenge at the Lincolnshire Show. A class of Year 4 children worked on raising awareness of living a healthy lifestyle and trying to influence a change to healthier eating, led by their class teacher Miss Pegg and Governor Mrs Kenyon. The whole school, including parents, following a theme across the term of ‘Grow a Rainbow, Eat a Rainbow’. We have developed recipes from fruit and vegetables, tasted, surveyed, invited special guests into school to talk to us about fruit and vegetables, we have visited a farm to see food grown and set targets to reduce chocolate bars and crisps eaten at breaktime. Breakfast clubs, a Rainbow Café and lunchtime sessions have been well supported and we have all been made more aware of how exercise and eating healthily are inter-linked.

Pets Corner

Summertime Hot Dogs and Cool Cats The summer heat is glorious. Our pets love a bit of sunshine too, but they can’t take off their fur coats. When it gets hot we need to take care so they don’t develop heat exhaustion and sunburn Here are some top tips for your pet’s health this summer. Hot Pavements Tarmac and paving stones heat to burning temperatures. You won’t feel it through your shoes, but your dog will. Dog pads can blister when it’s hot, so walk in the shade and avoid pavements. It’s worth checking their toes if you see them licking their pads excessively. Heat Exhaustion Put on a fur coat and sit in direct sunlight before long you’ll feel ill. Dogs and cats can’t sweat or strip off like us. Keep them indoors if it’s hot or provide shade in the garden. A small paddling pool or baby bath is ideal for your dog to cool down in, but your cat probably won’t like it much! In the evening birds may drink and bathe in a shallow paddling pool, so it’s worth leaving it outside. Sunburn Light- furred animals are susceptible to sunburn. You can put non-toxic sun cream on your pet’s nose and ears. Animals in Cages You must keep caged animals cool. Rabbit hutches should be kept shady, and indoor cages moved away from window sills. Keep all water sources topped up - change water twice a day if you can. Cold water is more cooling than tepid water. Fish When it gets hot oxygen levels drop in shallow water. Your fish may gape at the

surface. A pump is a useful addition because aerated water drags in oxygen. You can add cool water and provide some shade too - a parasol over part of the pond works well. Water-butts Cats jump onto water-butts but once in they can’t get back up the slippery sides. Always put a secure lid on your water-butt. What To Do If You Suspect Heat Stroke Heat stroke can be fatal - here are the symptoms • panting • eye-rolling • foaming at the mouth • possible vomiting • unsteadiness • lethargy

bathroom floor, provide drinking water, wrap them in a wet towel, and wipe their eyes and nose with cool water. A vet trip is a good idea to ensure there’s no organ damage. Don’t waste any time getting your pet there if they don’t quickly respond to your cooling efforts. Enjoy your summer folks! We know you know this, but please don’t leave any animals in a car when it’s hot, even for a few minutes. The temperature rises rapidly and can kill your pet.

You must bring down their temperature immediately. Find a cool kitchen or

Whether you want to tour the castle or simply enjoy the park and gardens there is something for everyone. As well as woodland walks there is a woodland adventure playground and plenty of picnic areas to enjoy. If you enjoy your cycling there are many cycle trails and should you not be able to transport your bikes, cycle hire is available. Hire starts from £5.50 for a child and £7.50 for adults. There is also a tea room and a shop. The park and gardens are open from Sunday to Thursday inclusive during the summer holidays from 11am – 6pm and the castle is open on the same days from 12 noon. Lincoln Cathedral and Castle Lincoln has much to offer by way of a day out but we are going to concentrate on the Cathedral and Castle. The Cathedral run tours from Monday to Saturday – floor tours, roof tours (which give you views of inside of one of the cathedral roofs and lets you get up close to the stained glass windows) and tower tours (running through the summer this tour allows you to climb the highest tower in the cathedral and admire the views at the top). The Castle is open daily from 10am – 5pm. As well as enjoying the scenery and taking a tour you can also take a medieval wall walk, visit a Victorian prison and view a copy of the Magna Carta. With this year being its anniversary it would make a timely visit! There are also regular events, with August playing host to a medieval battle, a performance of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a children’s festival of history and a Steampunk Festival. Bewilderwood Set on the Norfolk Broads, Bewilderwood is a day out like no other. An adventure park with magical treehouses and intriguing characters this huge, award winning forest is a great day if you love the outdoors. There are treehouses, zip wires, jungle bridges, boat trips, marsh walks and good food. There is also storytelling,

and, of course, Crocklebogs, Twiggles and Boggles. Open daily throughout the holidays from 10am – 5:30pm, don your scruffs and go and have a great day. Banham Zoo Who doesn’t love a trip to the zoo? Banham Zoo is open every day during the summer holidays from 9:30am – 6pm. August is Groovy Hooves month – activities centred around the hooved animals at the zoo, not just the domestic animals but also the giraffe, camels, zebras and many more. Once at the zoo you can take your pick from their huge variety of animals – birds, domestic livestock, cats (including big cats such as cheetahs and Siberian tigers), hoofstock, lesser apes, monkeys, carnivores, mammals, reptiles, invertebrates and fish. With shops and plenty of places to eat don’t be afraid to get there for opening time as you could still be quite happily going round when the park closes. Go Ape and Go Ape Tree Top Junior Go Ape is the UKs number 1 forest adventure. They offer tree-top adventures, zip trekking, forest segways and Tree Top Junior for the younger members of the family so everyone can get involved. With courses taking 2-3 hours to complete you are guaranteed to get rid of some of that excess energy that builds up over the holidays. At over 28 locations across the UK, you might like to look at the Thetford and Milton Keynes locations.

Education Plan

Choosing the right educational setting With so much to consider and places vying for your attention, how do you decide where to educate your child?

Y

ou may not think about education when you are choosing a nursery but it might be worth asking where their children go to once their time at nursery comes to an end. Some nurseries are “feeder” nurseries where the children go to a particular school when they reach school age. If you already have a primary school in mind then they will be able to recommend nurseries to you. It can be a good decision as your children will get to know other children who will be in their class at school before they even start!! As usual make sure you view any nurseries that you like the look of and take the time to get all of your questions answered so that you feel comfortable leaving your child there. Many nurseries offer taster sessions so that your child can have a shorter time there and get used to the setting before they start longer hours. When it comes to choosing a primary school your choices may be dictated by where you live, also known as your catchment area. The schools which fall in your catchment area will be your choice. Many schools have open days so take the opportunity to go and have a look around and see if there is anything that you think your child would particularly like. Once you have decided you will need to apply for a place for your child. The council has information on this process if you are unsure, you can either pop in to the council offices or take a look at their website. If you would prefer an independent school then the process is slightly different and you should begin by contacting the school directly and they will talk you through their individual processes. Before your child reaches Year 6 you will need to decide whether you are going to enter them for the 11 plus exams. If they take them and pass then they will have access to the area’s grammar schools. Whether you choose a grammar school or not you will need to visit the school on one of their open days or open evenings so you can get a real feel for the kind of education your child will receive. It’s always useful to bear in mind your child’s interests and make sure they match up. For example, if your child is sporty then look at the sports facilities and ask about achievements in that area. If they are academically minded then ask about exam results. Make sure also that you get your child’s input! You may like it but if your child doesn’t get the same feeling then you may 24 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

“If your child is looking to go to University then UCAS will have all of the information they need...” have problems down the line! After GCSEs the big question becomes ‘what next’? A levels or vocational training? And sixth form or a college? If the secondary school your child is attending has a sixth form then it can be easy to continue there as they will be familiar with the school, staff and all of its processes. But it is always worth taking a look at all of your options so when you see an open day or evening advertised take advantage and pay a visit. If your child is looking to go to University then UCAS will have all of the information they need, (www,ucas.com) as they have details of all of the colleges and courses available as well as the grades required to secure a place on the course. Schools and colleges will work closely with your children make sure they make the best decisions when it comes to post-18 decisions but it is worth keeping involved.

Pub Grub

Pub Grub Why we love heading to the pub for a bite to eat

W

hether it’s after an evening walk in the summer or to escape the cold in front of a roaring fire in the winter we, as a nation, do love a trip to the pub. While we’re there we also love a meal, usually something we wouldn’t usually cook at home. So what do we love to eat in the pub? Tastes are always changing and the top pub meal will change from one year to the next. Today we are faced with so much choice we can pretty much take our pick of what we fancy. Top of the list is still the Sunday roast, all the satisfaction with none of the preparation. Of the Sunday roasts available it is still carvery which comes out on top, with people preferring more than one type of meat on their plate. Theme nights are still as popular as ever with curry nights, steak nights and burger nights the favourites. Alongside these theme nights there are also Tasting Menu evenings where you get to sample lots of dishes from the menu in miniature form. It’s a great way of sampling many dishes without having to have the full version. Early evening visits to the pub were made for sharing platters! With their popularity on the increase the variety you can get now will suit all tastes – texmex and nachos are always a hit but dessert platters and cheeseboard platters are new favourites. If you are unable to decide on what you want to eat a sharing platter is always a welcome addition to the menu as there are often several things to try. The message to ‘Eat Local’ is all around us and a very easy way to do this is to eat at the pub! Many pubs use local butchers and growers to source their ingredients. Aside from the positive effect on

“...we love these old faithful dishes, they go so well with the good beers that the pubs have on offer.”

the environment, locally sourced food tends to be particularly tasty as it hasn’t had to travel far to get to your plate! Fresh, seasonal produce often takes pride of place on a menu and rightly so, not only is it helping the local economy but also treating you to the best the area has to offer! We love a traditional pub meal! Pie and chips, fish and chips, steak, the list goes on. A perennial favourite, chicken in a basket, is also making a resurgence albeit presented in a more up to date way. One of the reasons we love these old faithful dishes is that they go so well with the good beers that the pubs have on offer. Finally, the specials board. Most of us have a ‘local’ which is our pub of choice, although the meaning has changed somewhat as this is no longer automatically the pub nearest to you! When it comes to enjoying the food the chefs all tend to have a selection of dishes that they do particularly well. This will vary from chef to chef but it’s meals like this that keep people coming back for the food. Have a think about the pubs you love and the particular food that you love to go there for – is it for any of the above?

Health & Beauty

All about eyes Glasses or contacts? Contacts or glasses? How to decide which is right for you then how to choose

O

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

nce you have had your eye test and received your prescription you are faced with the task of selecting either a pair of glasses or contact lenses. In both instances your choice is wide and whilst it might be fun trying on everything in the shop it might be less time consuming to take a little advice… If you are fashion conscious then many opticians stock ranges of designer frames which are a bit of a one stop shop if you are looking for a style which is up to date and on trend. A pair of glasses which match your personality might practically jump off the shelf at you – bright colours, large frames, retro style or a particular shape, in which case problem solved! Much like the shape of your eyebrows, the right style of glasses can be dictated by the shape of your face. Round – this face type will benefit from narrow frames and a rectangular shape. Oblong – nice deep frames suit this type of face shape. Diamond – leave those eyebrows on show and try a pair of rimless glasses. Square – make sure the frames are a soft shape to complement the strong angles of your face. Oval – lucky you! Most styles of glasses will suit you, particularly rounder frames. When it comes to contact lenses people have concerns about wearing them but many of their worries can be addressed by having a discussion with their optician. Technologies in contact lenses are always improving and if you have thought about using them before but decided against it then now might be a good time to think again. Today there are many types of contact lenses which fit around not only the type of eyesight you have and any conditions you might have but also your lifestyle. If you are busy and prefer daily contact lenses you can pick up (or in some cases, have delivered) a set monthly. If you prefer to stick with the same pair 30 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

fortnightly or monthly there are lenses for that too. If you need bifocal or varifocals that’s not a problem and nor is age. If they are deemed appropriate then there is no reason why children cannot wear contact lenses and the elderly are also suited. The biggest concern many people have is that they won’t be able to put them in themselves or that they will be uncomfortable. When you decide that you want contact lenses your optician will work with you to ensure there are no problems. Whilst it does take a little practice at the beginning you will soon be able to put them in and take them out with ease. Once you have got your lenses your optician will keep in touch with you to make sure you have no problems and should you need to you can always pop in for advice and tips. Most opticians offer a free contact lens trial so if you are not sure you can take the opportunity to try before you buy!

Home Improvement

Garages and Outbuildings Having the space you want and need

T

here are many ways to add space to your home. Taking advantage of the space you have outside of your house is a good place to start. Whether it’s at the bottom of the garden or at the side of the house, making smart decisions will give you that all-important additional room. If you have an integral garage then there is the option to convert it into a room to give you more space in the house. Doing this you can add a dining room, family room, office or whatever you have the need for. Surveys suggest that nine out of ten homes with a garage don’t actually keep their car in them so it is space which is begging to be used! If you do like to put your car away in the evenings but also want that extra room in your house then consider building a garage next to the house. Provided you do not live in a listed building then garages are usually considered to be permitted development and as such planning permission is not required. It is always good practice to check though and all of the guidelines can be found at www.planningportal.gov.uk Round the back of the house you might like to consider a garden room at the bottom of the garden. Also referred to as home offices or studios these structures are usually made of timber but are connected to mains electricity for the purpose of being a fully functioning room. People who work from home but like to have their own dedicated space will benefit from a garden room. If you love evenings in your garden then you should look into summer houses. Whilst most summer houses look similar on the outside, the way they look on the inside is limited only by your imagination! Some people have a set of garden furniture in there, others decorate more elaborately. It’s not uncommon for a summer house to be decorated in the same way as a room in the

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

house! As well as being used for appreciating the nice weather and the garden some are used for entertaining (a fab space for a bar…) whereas others become ‘man caves’, the increasingly popular retreat for the men in the household. Get in there quick though boys as the ladies are reclaiming them and turning them into ‘she-sheds’!! Coming away from the fun and back to the utility, a garden shed can be the key to keeping your garden looking its best. Storing tools, the lawnmower, bikes and other sundries a garden shed keeps everything stored and secure. You can also keep seasonal garden items stored when they are not in use. Most new sheds come with a ten year guarantee and take very little maintenance so if you don’t have one then you should give it some thought. Finally, growing your own - flowers, plants, vegetables, the list goes on! If you want to start growing your own then the conditions need to be right and if you have the space then a greenhouse will provide those for you. If space is limited then you can buy smaller lean-to greenhouses or even smaller still portable greenhouses which use polythene instead of glass and can sit unobtrusively on the patio.

hey pride themselves on their high levels of service, offering windows and doors, composite doors, conservatories, fascias, soffits, guttering and rubberised flat roofs. They are also FENSA registered for your peace of mind. FENSA stands for the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme. Following Government encouragement, FENSA has been set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and other industry bodies in response to Building Regulations for double glazing companies in England and Wales. When replacing windows, doors and roof lights in dwellings in England and Wales, homeowners must comply with current thermal performance and Building Regulation standards and ensure they get a certificate from a Competent Person scheme such as FENSA or Local Authority Building Control. FENSA enables companies that install replacement windows and doors to self-certify compliance under these Building Regulations without the need for a separate assessment from Building Control. All of S & J’s products are ‘A rated’ so it reduces your heating bills as well as your carbon footprint! If you are considering a change from old windows you will also find that the time you spend on maintenance

dramatically decreases! All jobs come with a ten year guarantee for your peace of mind. No job is too big or too small and S & J are as happy replacing windows at a huge commercial unit as they are changing a single window at a home. If you are thinking about having some work done then the best place to start is by making the call to discuss your requirements. S & J offer free surveys and estimates – they are more than happy to come to your home, measure up and give you the benefit of their years of experience to make recommendations to ensure you achieve outstanding results. They have their own, fully qualified fitters so you can be assured of a quality installation. The whole process from start to finish takes very little time – the usual turnaround time can be around four weeks.

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY

he new ŠKODA Superb Estate is the ideal companion for everyday family and working life. Examining it at launch in Bavaria, Germany, I discovered the new car has the largest boot in the automotive mid-class. Although the Superb Estate is only 23mm longer than its predecessor, the load area holds 27 litres more than before with the rear seats up. By putting the chairs down in the back, the capacity will increase to almost two cubic metres - 85 litres larger than that of the secondgeneration model. Even carrying long objects is possible; the front passenger chair can easily be folded down when required. This allows objects of up to 3.10 metres in length to be transported. The new ŠKODA Superb not only triumphs in terms of space, but also in its practical solutions. Up to 31 Simply Clever features are on offer for the model – 11 of which are in the boot alone. Just as with the saloon version, the latest ŠKODA Superb Estate is also optionally available with a virtual pedal, which enables you to

36 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

open the electric tailgate handsfree with a simple foot movement around the bottom of the rear bumper. Another new addition making its debut on the new ŠKODA Superb Estate is the practical tip-to-close function that initiates the electric boot closing mechanism with a simple pull. Additionally, folding down the rear backrests can be done at the touch of a button in the boot of the new Superb Estate. The variably adjustable false boot floor offers the highest practical benefits in the ŠKODA Superb Estate. This intermediate moveable floor can divide the boot in various ways making it more flexible. The system also creates practical storage space: the boot’s coat shelf and the retractable cover can be stored under the double floor. The roller cover has been designed as a manual retractable load covering. By applying gentle pressure, it automatically moves back and the boot is free for loading. The cover also has an automatic unlocking roller blind. This means it will automatically move one notch back when the boot door opens. Another practical feature is the new coat shelf, which can be found

under the roller cover. This can hold flat items, such as a jacket. Four folding hooks in the boot can help to securely transport items that might otherwise move around, for example shopping bags. The net programme is also useful here; one horizontal and two vertical nets can secure items when required. Finally, in the boot you will also find a removable LED torch, which can be used outside the vehicle. The flashlight is charged automatically in its holder as you drive, and is also magnetic. The ŠKODA Superb Estate I drove - and highly recommend - is the 2.0 TDI 148bhp six speed manual SE Business model. It offers bags of pull, up to 68.9mpg - and 0-62mph in a respectably quick 8.9 seconds. It’s obviously a larger, heavier version of its latest hatchback sibling, but this doesn’t affect its dynamic ability. All the key controls feel smooth and well-weighted – hearteningly classy, even. And the Superb goes about its business in a hushed, unruffled manner, irrespective of the engine you choose. The box fresh Superb Estate goes on sale in the UK in July, ahead of first deliveries from September 2015.
