Finally we can start thinking about Spring, I love the start of winter but after about 3 weeks am ready for the nicer weather and longer days to come back! There’s not much to report in the Hammond house from February, I feel like we have been hibernating! Jobs advice on oﬀer Looking for a job in South Holland? Then come along to a free event in Spalding happening soon. The South Holland Jobs Fair takes place on Tuesday, April 4 and offers visitors the chance to speak to over 30 employers and training providers from a range of industries who are currently recruiting in the district. The popular annual event is being held at the South Holland Centre in Market Place between 10am - 2pm and is organised by South Holland District Council’s Economic Development Team in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions. Representatives from several sectors including the food industry will be on hand to discuss current vacancies as well as offering information about a wide range of jobs. Visitors can get career advice

and learn about the skills needed for different roles. Helpful hints will also be offered to anyone who is thinking of starting their own business or looking to beneﬁt from training and development opportunities. Boston Marathon 2017 Last year’s ﬁrst Boston Marathon recorded the fastest times for both men and women of all the Association of Running Clubs’ marathons in 2016. Ben Harris, from Retford, ran the 26.2 miles in two hours 40 minutes - an average speed of 10mph. Fiona Davies, from Rotherham, recorded two hours 54 minutes. This year Boston Marathon will be run on Bank Holiday Monday, April 17, the same day as the one in Boston USA. Already 500 runners have signed up for the Lincolnshire event, on what has been dubbed the ﬂattest marathon course in the world. The event is expected to attract the maximum number of 800 entrants. Event secretary Harish

Karup confirmed that the course will be the same as last year, starting in the Market Place, then out to Wrangle and finishing at the college. There will also be a half marathon again and a three km fun run for the 12 to 17year -olds. Rachel Lauberts is in charge of recruiting marshals for the event. She needs to find about 100 to help at the watering stations and road junctions. NEWS LIVES helped a record 20,516 Lincolnshire patients in 2016 LIVES, a Lincolnshire based charity attending 999 medical emergencies, have experienced their busiest year on record by responding to more than 20,000 emergency calls from patients across Lincolnshire in 2016. This is an increase of more than 2,000 on the previous year and a testament to the hard work and dedication of LIVES volunteers. The trend of increasing calls is continuing into 2017 with LIVES responders exceptionally busy over the holiday period. Between 31st December 2016 and 2nd January 2017, LIVES volunteers attended over 300 emergency incidents which is nearly double the normal number of jobs. On average, LIVES responders attend nearly 60 calls per day and aim to get to the patient in eight to nine minutes to deliver immediate

life-saving care, often before the arrival of an ambulance. Nikki Silver, CEO of LIVES commented, “Our responders make a huge contribution to their communities throughout the year, responding to emergency calls day or night and whatever the weather. We’re often the ﬁrst people at the scene of an emergency and our actions save lives. Now, as the number of calls we attend grows, more than ever it is important for us to raise funds to allow our volunteers to continue their exceptional lifesaving work. We are very grateful for the public support that allows us to continue to offer immediate medical care throughout Lincolnshire, and we would not have been able to help over 20,000 people without our generous supporters.” Every year LIVES need to raise more than £1 million from public donations to keep their army of volunteers trained and equipped to be able to respond to any medical emergency across Lincolnshire. Surfleet Neighbourhood Plan Residents are being asked to have their say on a proposal made by Surﬂeet Parish Council to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan for the area. Surﬂeet Parish Council has applied to South Holland District Council to designate their Parish area as a neighbourhood area. Neighbourhood Planning offers communities the

opportunity to shape future development by creating new policies which are used in determining planning applications. Nick’s Notes

he first six weeks of the year are now behind us and for me it has certainly been varied and challenging. From a County Council perspective this has included more visits to Fire Stations (Emergency Services are a part of my County portfolio), as part of regular inspections. There is also the ongoing Blue Light collaboration project which will have shared headquarters with the Police at Nettleham and a joint Emergency Ambulance, Fire and Police Station at South Park, Lincoln. Opportunities to share more fire stations with the Police in particular are being looked at across the County, saving money and becoming more efficient in the way we work. A consultation paper on a merger of the two current Coronial areas into one area for the whole of Lincolnshire has recently been sent out by the Ministry of Justice. This will mean one Coroner for Lincolnshire but there will still be Assistant Coroners and Coroners officers based in the south of the County, currently based at Boston and local venues, such as the Red Lion Quarter in Spalding and Registration offices at Long Sutton for inquests, so continuing to provide a really valued local service for residents in South Holland and saving a minimum of £50,000 in the process. Locally I have been helping to move books onto shelves in the new Co-op run Library in Holbeach. Two of us moved 45 boxes of books in the first day, just 115 to go! It all looks very shiny, new and welcoming as does the pharmacy and post office which looks great. Unfortunately. This will leave a temporary hole in the town centre, but it is hoped these will be filled fairly quickly. To help us understand the High Street in Holbeach even better, Cllrs Carter, Biggadike and myself have commissioned a Retail Study, which I very much hope will dovetail into new

opportunities being presented through an Historic England programme, ‘Heritage at Risk’, with a particular focus on the Holbeach Conservation Area and future Regeneration of the town centre.Lots of opportunities, so watch the local newspapers for the latest news on how this will develop and bring in investment to the town. I have also been working hard to help our large employers to ﬁnd ways of recruiting more people by bringing job centres from across the region together to focus on available jobs, of which there are many . I also want to make it easier for people living in Lincolnshire to access jobs in South Holland through what I hope will be an innovative project by adding bespoke bus routes from towns such as Boston and Kings Lynn, picking up employees in South Holland on their way and linking into local shift patterns. This all links in nicely with our annual Jobs Fair on Tuesday, 4th April at the South Holland Centre. With over 30 employers and training providers, for those of you who are out of work, want to change direction or just want to see what is on offer, this is an opportunity not to be missed! Last year over 400 people attended and we are hoping for more this year. On the cultural front, there will be a once in a life time opportunity to see the Lincolnshire section of the Domesday Book (just 931 years old!), never seen outside of London! It will sit alongside Magna Carta and The Charter of the Forest. It will also signal the start of ‘Battles and Dynasties’ an exhibition of International importance to be shown at The Collection in Lincoln, in the summer, taking in the great moments of British history from 1086 right up to the House of Windsor and will include loans from the Queen’s private collection and National Archives. ...give free, conﬁdential, impartial and independe nt advice to help you solve your problems

If your gas or electricity supplier increases its prices, they should tell you at least 30 days before the change takes place, unless: • your prices are changing because your supplier is changing the way you pay - such as if they’re installing a prepayment meter (you’ll get 7 days’ notice) • you’re on a ‘staggered tariff’, where your contract contains set price increases on set dates (you won’t get a reminder) • you’re on a ‘tracker’ tariff, where your prices will go up and down to follow something else, such as a stock market (you won’t get any notice) You should complain to your supplier if they don’t give you the right amount of notice. How to avoid the increase To avoid the increase, you can compare tariffs from different suppliers to see if you could get a better deal. Make sure you act quickly - you’ll need to ask to change tariffs before the price is increased. If you change tariff with your current supplier, they must put you on the new tariff

no later than 20 working days after the price increase was due to start. If you switch to a tariff with a new supplier, they must tell your current supplier they’re taking over your supply. They have to do this no later than 20 working days after the price increase was due to start. If you owe money on your account, your current supplier can prevent the switch until you’ve paid. They must write to tell you they’re doing this. If you pay the balance within 30 working days of them telling you, the switch can still go ahead and your current supplier mustn’t increase the price. If you’re on a ‘fixed rate’ tariff Your supplier can’t increase the price you pay for energy unless: • the government has raised VAT • you have a tariff that has structured price changes set out in advance If you’re unsure what tariff you’re on, check your bill. If it says your contract has an end date, you’ll most likely have a fixed term tariff. When your fixed rate tariff ends The price you pay for energy will normally go up if your contract ends. The work, which included a trim trail being installed, new fencing, outdoor staging and toadstool seats and new playground markings has ﬁnally been completed. We are thrilled with the result and the children have had great enjoyment from the result

Boston College Boston College’s Business Development department hosted an event on Wednesday 25th January, ‘The Age of Information and Technology.’ The event played host to over 60 employers and provided them with the opportunity to see how technology is shaping the business landscape and to discover how current businesses are using technology innovatively to benefit them. The guests had the chance to attend a sequence of short presentations from both global and local businesses, who explained how they use technology and the benefits of this. NatWest, Parkinson, EEF, Chattertons, Seeing Machines and Metsa all gave presentations relevant to technology in their sector. There was also the opportunity after the presentations for the visiting businesses to have a look at the 12 exhibits on display from businesses such as the NHS Talent Academy, EEF, Rolec, Metsa and even electric motor vehicle giants Tesla. The exhibits not only gave the chance to visiting businesses to have a look at their products and to network but also gave students from Boston College the opportunity to speak and learn from some of the industry’s big names. Tris Cox, a representative for Tesla said, “It has been very beneficial to see local businesses and the opportunities that have arose in how we could collaborate and work together. The whole event has been well thought through and nicely put together by Boston College.”

What are the Legal Diﬀerences?

etting married is an exciting time in life, however it does come with more legal implications than just a name change and ticking the married box on forms!

Banking If a married couple has a joint bank account, the money is owned jointly regardless of who put it into the account. On the death of one partner, the whole account immediately becomes the property of the other. Debts and overdrafts relating to a joint bank account will be the responsibility of both or either partner, irrespective of who incurred them.

Death and Inheritance When your married partner dies, you will inherit under the will of the dead partner if it makes provision for you. If either married partner dies without making a will, the other will inherit all or some of the estate.

Debts You are liable for any debts which are in your own name only, but not for any debts which are just in your partner’s name. You may be responsible for the whole of debts in joint names and for other debts for which you have ‘joint and several’ legal responsibility. For example, in England and Wales, if you owe council tax, you and your partner will both be responsible for the debt, regardless of whether one of you contributes or not. If your partner has a debt for which you

have acted as guarantor, you will also be held legally responsible for paying it. If you’re married, you will not be responsible for any financial obligations or debts that your partner had before you were married.

Home Owners Both married partners have a right to remain in the matrimonial home, regardless of who bought it or has a mortgage on it. This is known as home rights. You will have the right to stay in the home until a court has ordered otherwise, for example, in the course of a separation or divorce settlement. If you and your partner are divorcing, the long-term right to ownership of your property can be decided alongside divorce proceedings. The court has the power to transfer property regardless of original ownership. However, if you are not separating legally, the court will only agree to transfer ownership of a property if it is in the best interests of your children. If you are the sole or joint owner of the home, your partner will not be able to sell it without your agreement. However, if your partner is the sole owner, you will need to register your home rights in order to protect your interests. Unless you register your home rights, you will not be able to prevent your partner from selling the home or be able to remain there if it is sold. You can register your home rights, regardless of whether or not you are still

living in the home. You will need to register your home rights with either the Land Registry or at the Land Charges Department, depending on whether your home has already been registered or not. If you register your home rights, they will show up when buyers do a search on the home. This would make them aware of your right to stay in the home and prevent the sale going through. This is a complicated area of the law and you should get expert legal advice.

Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements If you’re planning to marry or form a civil partnership with your new partner, you might want to protect your ﬁnancial position by taking out a prenuptial agreement or a postnuptial agreement. These are legal documents that will set out what you’ve agreed. A postnup, which is taken out after a couple has married or become civil partners, is often used if one partner comes into an inheritance or buys a second property. It can also be used if there is a change in circumstances, for example if you have a baby.

What is the legal status of prenups and postnups? In England, Wales or Northern Ireland, prenups and postnups are not fully legally binding, but they are taken into account by the courts if you divorce or dissolve your civil partnership. The court would want to know that: • You had both taken independent legal advice • There was full ﬁnancial disclosure (that you were open with each other about your money) • Neither of you were pressured into signing the prenup • It was fair (what is ‘fair’ will depend on the circumstances of your case) If you and your partner are considering a prenup or postnup, take independent legal advice. You will need a solicitor to draft the agreement. This advice has been taken from Citizens Advice and The Money Advice Service. If you are unsure of your position seek advice from a fully trained solicitor.

Spoil Mother with an Afternoon Tea…at Home!

fternoon tea is a tradition we all love to indulge in - from scones to cakes, from sandwiches to loaves, we all have our favourite afternoon tea staple that we can’t do without!

Things you will need to host afternoon tea: • Plates and bowls: Go for a matching set or a mixture of decorative plates to set the scene. • Tea pot and tea cups: No afternoon tea is complete without a classic tea pot and some tea cups. • Tea (of course) and other drinks including hot chocolate, coffee or champagne, it’s a special occasion after all!

Here are our recipes for the sweet section, accompany these with a selection of traditional sandwiches such as smoked salmon and soft cheese, ham and mustard, cheese and tomato or coronation chicken.

Scones Scones are a British favourite and couldn’t be easier to make with our cheap, quick and easy scone recipe. This recipe includes added sultanas but you can leave them out or replace with fruit of your choice.

Ingredients ✔ 225g self-raising flour ✔ 2tsp baking powder ✔ 50g butter, chilled and diced ✔ 2tbsp caster sugar ✔ 50g sultanas ✔ 1 large egg ✔ 100ml milk ✔ Jam and clotted cream (to serve)

• Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas Mark7. Sift the flour into a large bowl with the baking powder. • Add the chilled and diced butter and rub in with your fingertips to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the caster sugar and sultanas. • Beat 1 large egg with the milk. Pour nearly all the egg mixture into the bowl of flour and butter and mix with a knife to form soft, but not sticky, dough. Add a little more of the egg mixture if needed. • Turn the dough on to a floured surface and knead lightly then roll out to a 2cm (3/4in) thickness. Use a 5cm (2in) round cutter to stamp out approx 9 scones, gently re-rolling the dough as necessary. • Place the scones on a lightly greased baking sheet. Arrange them so the sides are just touching, as this helps them to rise evenly. Brush the tops with any remaining egg mixture or a little milk and bake for 1012 mins until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.

• Cutlery: You’ll need everything from a cake knife to teaspoons for spooning on the clotted cream. • Napkins and doilies: Napkins for mess and doilies for decoration. • Cake stand: Cake stands are a great way of showing off your bakes and making them look extra fancy. A wooden chopping board or large serving plate would work just as well

Macaroons There are endless variations to pimp this classic French dessert. This classic recipe will take you just under two hours, but you can make more than you need and pack the macaroons you won’t need right away in a plastic freezer container. All you’ll have to do is make the filling of your choice and there are so many options – chocolate, strawberry, coffee… You can also make them in different colours, which is great to add a bit more colour to the table

100g (3½oz) ground almonds 100g (3½oz) icing sugar 125g (4oz) caster sugar 75g (2½oz) egg whites Food colouring

140g (4½oz) caster sugar Pinch of salt 50g (1¾oz) egg whites 150g (5oz) unsalted butter Few drops of vanilla extract

You will also need: ✔ Sugar thermometer ✔ Large piping bag, fitted with 1cm (½in)

or baking parchment • To make the macaroons: Sift together the ground almonds and icing sugar twice, to make sure they’re well mixed. • Pour 2 tbsp water into a small pan and add 100g (3½oz) caster sugar. Place the pan over a low heat and stir until the sugar dissolves, then use a damp pastry brush to wash down any sugar crystals around the sides of the pan. Boil the syrup rapidly until it reaches 121°C. When the syrup is at about 110°C, start whisking 45g (1½oz) egg whites until stiff, then whisk in the remaining sugar. • When the syrup is at the right

Add the food colouring and whisk in. • Sift the ground almonds and icing sugar over the top and add the remaining egg white; gently fold in until all the ingredients are well mixed. • Spoon the mixture into the piping bag and pipe rounds on to the lined baking sheets. Tap the baking sheets against the work surface to flatten the macaroons slightly. Leave them for about 60 mins, until a skin forms on top. • Set the oven to 150°C/300°FGas Mark 2. Bake the macaroons for 12-15 mins, or until they just start to tinge in colour. Remove from the oven and leave them to cool on the baking trays. • To make the filling: Pour 3 tbsp water into a small pan and add 125g (4oz) sugar and the salt. Boil to a syrup and pour over the whisked egg whites as in Step 2 for making the macaroons. Whisk the mixture for a few minutes, until it cools, then gradually whisk in the butter. Childcare Options 30 hours of free childcare - will my child get it? The doubling of free childcare to 30 hours is being rolled out by the Government across the country this year. But, it turns out, free may not mean entirely free...

So what is the free childcare deal? In a nutshell, many working parents of 3 to 4-year-olds in England will be eligible for 30 hours of free childcare - rather than the current 15 hours. But the ﬁrst thing you need to know is that this is 30 hours free for only 38 weeks per year - not 52 weeks of the year. In theory, you may be able to spread the free childcare out over further weeks, but this will mean you’ll get fewer than 30 hours free childcare each week.

When will it start? The Government has been rolling out a pilot scheme in 8 English areas: Wigan, Staffordshire, Swindon, Portsmouth, Northumberland, York, Newham and Hertfordshire. The scheme is scheduled to go nationwide later this year (2017).

Will my child get it? Not necessarily as not everyone is eligible. But everyone will still receive the 15 hours free childcare that is currently available.

Eligibility rules for 30 hours free childcare: • Your child will be aged 3 or 4 when the scheme starts in your area • Both parents must be working - or the sole parent is working in a lone parent family

• Each parent earns, on average, a weekly minimum equivalent to 16 hours at National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage • Each parent must have an annual income of less than £100,000 • You live in England

For this scheme, the minimum amount will always reﬂect the lowest hourly rate that a person of your age can legally be paid. Horse Riding should come with a warning...ﬆart and you won’t want to ﬆop by Horse Fanatic, Louise Hardwick

he well known phrase “daddy, I want a pony...” will never disappear. Whether you set eyes on your first shaggy pony in your local field, as a child or you became “hooked” at an older age, horses have an incredible way of settling in your soul. My story started as a toddler- when I met my first ride, Dusty. My little legs didn’t even reach the bottom of the saddle, yet I never felt scared. They say you are born with horses in your blood. I agree that I was. However, I remain a huge advocate for introducing horses, to people who previously have never felt the desire to ride. Horse riding has, thankfully, become increasingly accessible. The British Horse Society have worked tirelessly for years ( www.bhs.org.co.uk) to promote the sport It is essential when considering, your first horse riding experience, that you are aware of a few basic points • Always look for a BHS approved Riding School or BHS Registered Instructor. There are currently over 1000 approved centres and over 2000 registered instructors in the UK. • When you have chosen your approved riding school, be honest about your level of ability and any nerves you feel. (Before you meet your mount!) A good instructor wants to share the joy of riding with youand armed with all your facts, they can match you to a suitable horse. • It doesn’t matter whether you have the “correct” attire to start your experience. Clothes do not maketh the man- A sensible pair of shoes, with a slight

heel, a pair of jeans and a warm jacket will suffice. The centre will spend time with you, correctly fitting a riding hat. This will have a Kite mark inside, so you know it has been tested to current safety standards. • Use your judgement. Do the horses and ponies at the riding school; look generally happy and well cared for? Once you have considered all of the above, you are ready to go. Your first lesson, will likely be around 30mins. No matter how fit you think you are, I promise you, you will feel muscles you never knew you had.

So the addiction has started? I have no doubt, with the right instructor and right horse; you will be itching to get back on board. Regular lessons will not only improve your technically ability, they will start to develop the illusive “feel” that experienced riders talk of. “Feel” is when you have a rapport with your ride. You begin to understand the horses’ movement, his reactions to your movements and how you can work together. This is when you are likely to fall in love...I can’t describe the feeling. True rapport with a horse is a special thing. There are many options to pursue, all of which the BHS can assist you with. There are over 72,000 current members. Who are all as passionate, about their area within the sport. These include: leisure riding, Carriage Driving, Dressage, Show jumping, polo and riding for the disabled to name but a few popular ones The BHS will make you welcome, and you will ﬁnd many opportunities to join other like minded members, at events, competitions or social gatherings. I could talk about this subject endlessly, but what I can summarise is; When you and your ride, feel as one, I guarantee, I know the smile on your face will be huge. Riding should not just be considered as a

The age ranges may be different, but you will see the same smile, on the toddlers face on their pony, as you will see on an Olympian, winning Gold at the Equestrian Games. That smile is the love of the horse. It doesn’t matter what level you achieve with horses, they pay it back tenfold. If you don’t believe me have a look at my pictures. It seems like almost everyone is getting involved in group exercise today. On any given day in a warehouse, in a park or at the gym you can ﬁnd people exercising together. There’s everything from Running Clubs, Clubbercise, High Intensity Training to Boot Camp classes. So why exactly are so many people jumping the ‘lone wolf’ ship to work out with others in a group setting? What is the big attraction?

Motivation Unless you’re that rare person that can jump out of bed at 5 a.m. and hit the ground running, odds are that getting and staying motivated are difficult for you. You are not alone. Many people who attend a class will show up exhausted from the ups and downs of everyday life. But once they join the group, they become re-energized. With a friendly fitness instructor there to light a fire under you rear, it can’t get any better.

Accountability A workout group give you the fear of group teasing or shame of ‘where were you?’ Plus, there’s the friendly instructor again that keeps track of your tardiness. I have even heard of instructors sending a friendly reminder with the threat of numerous burpees. This usually does the trick.

Group Camaraderie Human beings are social creatures. Yes, a few are hermits and recluses, but the majority of us love to be around other people. We love to laugh, joke and have fun. This is one of the greatest products of a group workout setting. Nothing brings people closer quite like misery and physical suffering. If you’ve ever done a boot camp or similar class, you’ll understand what I’m talking about. In a world where we’ve become so dependent on email and texting, working out with a group offers that human interaction that is slowly disappearing. We can do just about everything today virtually without ever talking to a person. With group ﬁtness, you have to get involved. You can try to escape to the back of the pack, but a good instructor will integrate you into the group whether you like or not! So what are you waiting for? he biggest single personal financial risk in 2017 is that mortgage rates will rise rapidly. This isn’t primarily about UK base rates, set by the bank of England, it’s far more about the City’s long term prediction of interest rates – which new cheap fixed and long term variable rate deals are set based upon. Mortgage rates are near all-time historic lows and have been for a couple of years, and we’ve got used to that. Yet there is a plausible chance that 2017 is the year that will change. We’ve already seen some cheap deals such as HSBC’s 0.99% two-year fix being pulled. The five-year swap rates have increased from 0.35% back in September to 0.9% now – and we’re already seeing longer fixes start to get more expensive on the back of this. Of course, there’s no certainty here. Yet UK rates are so cheap that even if things reversed and they dropped again, the likely gain to mortgage holders would be limited. But if they did rise, the cost could be huge. The savings available right now can be huge, like Kperat’s who emailed: “Fixed at 1.24% for 2 yrs, reduced term to 13 yrs without paying much more a month. Will be saving about £20,000 even after fees. Thanks.” So, this is my clarion call for ALL mortgage holders, to check NOW if you’re on the cheapest deal, and, if not sort, it. Here’s what to do to find your cheapest deal. How much could I save? If like many people, you’re on your lender’s standard variable rate (SVR) – the default rate most fixes and trackers revert to when the intro deal ends – then the savings can be huge. Most SVRs are at 4% or higher. Yet the cheapest two-year fix is just 1.2% (you’ll need a top credit score and it’s got a big fee). Five-year fixes start at around 1.8%. All, of course, depend on how much of your home’s value you’re borrowing. So, someone moving

a £150,000 mortgage from 4% SVR to a twoyear fix at 1.2% would save £4,000+ over two years, even after fees. New Bathroom Bathroom Flooring When it comes to choosing bathroom flooring, it can be one of the toughest choices to get right. Not only does it have to look good and complement your chosen suite and wall finish, but it also has to stand up against water and humidity, as well as being slip resistant and low maintenance. Porcelain and ceramic tiles are often the default option and for good reason, but LVT (luxury vinyl tile), stone, rubber, polished concrete and even engineered wood flooring can be options too. Before looking at materials or different styles, the best place to start is to ask who will be using the room. Establishing this will enable you to work out your priorities. In general, most surface types will work for a family with older children or adult inhabitants — but if you have very young or older people at home, certain hazards must be considered.

irst impressions when approaching the new Audi Q2 are good. Like all Audis, it manages to stand out, even if it doesn’t try anything spectacular design-wise. In the more daring ‘Vegas Yellow’, it makes quite a visual impact though, and is unmistakeably Audi in appearance. The large grill and muscular body are complimented by a sloping roof line and contrast C-pillar which – in S-Line trim at least – is nicely offset in metallic silver. Sadly, on the smallest alloy wheels it looks puny, so bigger is better there. The interior is more of the same, being almost identical to that which you’d find in the A3 hatchback. That’s no bad thing though, as Audi makes some of the most pleasant interior spaces on the market today, and feels decidedly upmarket if it’s kitted out with a range of technology options, such as the virtual cockpit. We tested the Audi Q2 in 150PS 1.4-litre petrol guise. It provides plenty enough power for all types of road, being capable of overtaking on motorways and A-roads, yet remaining suitably quiet when pottering through towns and villages. If your annual mileage is quite low, this is a fine engine to go for, as you’re unlikely to need anything more than this. While the engine is quiet, the S-Tronic automatic gearbox is a little jumpy at low speeds, and tends to put too much torque through the wheels when trying to move off. This results in some minor wheel-spin. The S-Tronic unit has never quite been up to the high level of BMW’s eight-speed unit, but it is far from a bad gearbox, and, when up to speed, works quickly and seamlessly. Our petrol test car was the S-Line, fitted with sports suspension and larger alloy wheels, and we found it to be slightly too firm for our liking. Being a ‘Q’, you get

into it expecting a smooth ride, but you get something more like a ﬁrm hatchback than a compact SUV. We suspect Audi’s excellent seating helps offset this a little. If the trade-off was entertaining cornering and impressive dynamics, we’d be content, but it isn’t exactly fun to drive either. The steering is rather numb and it doesn’t feel particularly settled going quicker around corners, though it doesn’t feel out of its comfort zone either. Audi was keen to point out that it doesn’t skimp on technology with the new Q2; it uses the same tech in the fresh compact SUV as it does in its higher-end products, like the TT sports car or Q7 SUV. The stunning virtual cockpit is an option once again, and you can also get such goodies, such as adaptive cruise control, heated seats, a power operated boot, and Audi’s parking assistance system. The problem is, almost these luxuries cost extra. Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients.
