We’re all interested in rankings. Last year, Children’s Medical Center Dallas was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals in all 10 pediatric specialties. CHILDREN’S HEALTH RENOVATES PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT AT DALLAS CAMPUS When faced with a life-threatening illness or injury, a child often needs specialized care only available in a dedicated pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Among four dedicated intensive care units at

Children’s Medical Center Dallas, the 22bed Women’s Auxiliary Critical Care Unit offers children with a range of critical issues, including those undergoing organ transplants, access to state-of-the-art technology and life-saving strategies. In November, Children’s Health completed an initial $11 million renovation to this Dallas campus PICU to expand patient experience amenities and maximize access to critical care. Work

continues on the adjacent floor for the next phase of this project. On average, the PICU is at 80% capacity every day and accommodates approximately 6,000 patient days each year, with an average length of stay at nearly five days. The space includes newer, upgraded technology and better designed spaces, allowing for team members to more effectively focus on the intensive, continuous care required in the PICU. For families enduring high-stress, longterm stays, the new space provides a healing, family-friendly environment and added comforts like showers and a washer and dryer.
ECMO PROGRAM GETS NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Caring for the most critically ill and injured children requires expert-level care and treatment methods, and one lifesaving approach used at Children’s Health is extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). ECMO is a complex therapy method typically used when all other treatment approaches are unsuccessful. “ECMO buys time; it gives hope,” says Donna Taylor, ECMO Team Lead. As a type of life support system, ECMO uses a machine to temporarily function in place of a child’s heart and lungs, allowing the child to build strength and heal. To support the growing pediatric population in North Texas, the need for and utilization
of ECMO at Children’s Health is also growing. With generous philanthropic support, Children’s Health upgraded and expanded the ECMO program with the purchase of new mobile pumps. The pumps allow for improved efficiency and patient outcomes among many other advantages, including immediate therapy in emergency transportation. Children’s Health began offering ECMO nearly 30 years ago – thanks to a generous donation from the Women’s Auxiliary to Children’s Medical Center Dallas – and has since provided it to nearly 800 patients, making it one of the busiest ECMO programs in the country. Consistently receiving the “ELSO Center of Excellence Award” from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), Children’s is recognized as a leader in ECMO and is the first ECMO center in the world to have its training course endorsed by ELSO.

CURES FDA APPROVES PRECISION MEDICINE DRUG FROM UT SOUTHWESTERN AND CHILDREN’S HEALTH U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval came in November 2018 for a drug credited with saving Briana Ayala’s life. Briana began receiving treatment at Children’s Health after surgeons in her hometown of El Paso said it would be too dangerous to operate. She was enrolled in a clinical trial at the recommendation of Theodore Laetsch, M.D., a pediatric oncologist at UT Southwestern and Children’s Health, when her tumor resisted chemotherapy and other treatments. Approved for the treatment of solid tumors with a very specific genetic mutation called TRK fusions, the drug is the first ever oral TRK inhibitor. It’s called larotrectinib and is a form of precision medicine based on cancer’s mutation instead of the tumor’s location. The
TRK gene mutation notably occurs more frequently in some rare pediatric cancers than common adult cancers. So, while drug approval for pediatric treatment typically comes much later, the drug is already cleared for treating tumors in both adult and pediatric patients. Hospitals could only participate in the trial if patients’ tumors were sequenced to identify these rare mutations. Because Briana was a high-risk cancer patient at Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Health, physicians sequenced her genes and found the genetic alterations, making her eligible for the trial. For patients and families seeking new options for untreatable illnesses, the opportunity to participate in clinical research and treatment trials like this bring hope. A product of collaboration between some of the medical world’s brightest minds, clinical trials of this level are only available to pediatric patients in North Texas because of the partnership between Children’s Health and the research powerhouse of UT Southwestern Medical Center. COMMUNITY FOUNDATION MARKS NORTH TEXAS GIVING DAY MILESTONE

Marking our most successful North Texas Giving Day to-date, Children’s Medical Center Foundation finished second place on the large organization leaderboard for total amount raised. Over $900,000 was given in the single day of fundraising through the generosity of 685 donors — more than double the 2017 dollar total. This day means so much to the participating organizations that improve our community. The significant funds received for Children’s Health further demonstrate how much North Texas truly cares about the health and well-being of children. Also, in a show of support, Children’s Health employees collectively gave over $30,000 – an incredible milestone reached by those who already give so much to children and their families every day.
#GIVINGTUESDAY LAUNCHES CHARITABLE SEASON On the heels of Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is a nationally celebrated day that launches the charitable giving season. Children’s Medical Center Foundation participated in a local Giving Tuesday campaign, Give Big DFW, hosted by United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. Finishing first on the leaderboards, more than $31,000 was raised by 173 donors for Children’s Health.

For nearly 30 years, Children’s Health has been a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, operating as the local beneficiary for 40 national fundraising partners in North Texas. In 2018, these partners raised more than $2 million through point-of-sale and other fundraising campaigns. Partners like Costco and Panda Express, as well as Walmart and Sam’s Club, had particularly exceptional years:

COSTCO While Costco has been a CMN partner for more than 30 years, they first appeared in North Texas in 2000. Since then, the seven local warehouses have raised more than $3.3 million in support of Children’s Health. Along with warehouse employees and a generous corporate gift, local warehouse members raised nearly $500,000 in 2018. Beyond financial gifts, local Costco warehouses have donated supplies for patient and family support, participated in the AdoptA-Family and Stocking Stuffer programs, donated goodie bags for Nurse’s Week and provided a Thanksgiving meal to patient families in the Heart Center.
With 80% of their general managers personally supporting local CMN Hospitals, Panda Express works to benefit organizations that provide charitable care, life-saving equipment, education for healthy living and research for advanced treatment.
WALMART & SAM’S CLUB Walmart and Sam’s Club associates, customers and members in Dallas put their money where the miracles are during the annual Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraising campaign. The Dallas area raised more than $500,000 for Children’s Health. The effort was part of a national campaign for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, which put the total raised in the U.S. and Canada since 1987 over the $1 billion mark. Donations poured in during the six-week campaign as Walmart and Sam’s Club associates at 118 locations held various in-store fundraising activities and asked customers and members at the register to help kids live better.
PANDA EXPRESS In the last 10 years of partnership, Panda Express has raised more than $777,133 for Children’s Health with 46 local restaurants participating in the year-round fundraising campaign. In 2018, local Panda Express restaurants had a record-setting year with $440,000 raised — more than double previous years’ totals.

Nancy Belt, LCSW, has known she wanted to be a hospital social worker since she was in high school. “My mother is a nurse, and one of her close friends was a social worker at the nearby hospital,” she said. “After hearing about her work, I knew that’s what I wanted to do too, and from then on, that was my goal.” Nancy went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work and started her career in the Emergency Room at Children’s Medical Center Dallas in 1998. She’s been there ever since. With 122,000 average yearly visits, the Children’s Medical Center Dallas Emergency Room is one of the busiest pediatric emergency rooms in the nation and the only pediatric Level I trauma center in North Texas. For Nancy, that means she and her team members have thousands of opportunities each year to support children and their families on what may be some of the hardest days of their lives. “In trauma situations, typically only one parent is allowed to accompany the patient during transport – whether it’s by air or via ambulance,” Nancy said. “So once they arrive at the hospital, while our medical team is providing life-saving care to their child, these parents are often waiting on their own until additional family members arrive. That’s when we step in. When we’re standing by those parents’ sides, comforting them until their support system arrives, there’s no question in my mind that we’re making a difference in that moment.” Social workers are available 24/7 on both the Dallas and Plano campuses, responding during crisis situations such as child abuse cases, behavioral and mental health incidents and trauma cases. They help families gain access to appropriate resources – both in and outside of the hospital – and advocate for family members to their child’s care team, when needed. “Social workers often are the first to provide a behavioral or psychological assessment for our patients and are equipped to make recommendations for that patient’s next steps, whether that be inpatient care or connecting them with the right resources to support the child and their family safely at home,” Nancy said. “We’re also able to help support families with the logistical and financial issues

that may arise during their child’s unplanned hospitalization such as helping with food, lodging or even extra clothing.” There’s no question social workers play an invaluable role in providing compassionate and comprehensive care for some of our most vulnerable patients and their families, especially those who come through the Emergency Room. And they are only one of the many teams who continue to provide insightful feedback as we move forward with the recently-launched $56 million Emergency Room renovation project. One of the aspects of the renovation project that Thresa Belcher, Director, Child Life and Social Work, is most excited about is the addition of a Social Work office located right in the middle of the Emergency Room. “Because the Social Work team plays such an important role in caring for the whole family while their child is in the Emergency Room, the new Social Work office, which will be easily accessible to all patient care areas,
will further support our ability to care for these children and their families by enabling us to allocate our resources where they are most needed,” Thresa said. Our community has already shown tremendous support for the Emergency Room renovation project, contributing over $16 million toward our $30 million philanthropic goal to ensure we are able to expand our resources to meet the needs of children in North Texas and beyond. “Thanks to charitable gifts from our donors, when a family brings their child to the new Emergency Room at Children’s Health, not only are they going to get the best medical care possible for their child, they will also find several members of our Family Support Services team,” Thresa said. “Social workers, child life specialists, chaplains and our concierges are ready to assess how their visit to the ER is affecting the entire family and to step in to provide support and guidance in the best way possible.”

Since its founding in 2011, Children’s Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern (CRI) has continued to advance the fields of regenerative medicine, cancer and metabolism research.

Each scientist and physician working at CRI shares the same determination to push the boundaries of knowledge and to discover new strategies for treating disease. The scientific
and medical communities recognized their dedication and tireless work with a number of awards and accolades this past year.
DR. MORRISON INDUCTED INTO THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF MEDICINE Last October, Sean Morrison Ph.D., Director of CRI, was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine. NAM recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and a commitment to service. “I am grateful for this recognition for my laboratory’s work and particularly thankful for the support of my colleagues at UT Southwestern and Children’s Health. This is a remarkable environment in which to do science with many inspiring colleagues,” said Dr. Morrison of his induction. Also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator, Dr. Morrison is known for his significant discoveries in stem cell biology and cancer. “Sean Morrison’s successes are at the forefront of discovering new knowledge about cancer, including the very ways that research is conducted, aptly merit the exceptional distinction of being elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine,” said Christopher J. Durovich, President and Chief Executive Officer at Children’s Health.
Durovich added, “Moreover, the leadership of Dr. Morrison while pursuing his vision for exploiting the intersection of cancer, stem cell biology and metabolism has enabled Children’s Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern to move rapidly from a novel idea to a portfolio of leading laboratories making profound contributions to the health and well-being of everyone.”
DR. DEBERARDINIS BECOMES A HOWARD HUGHES MEDICAL INSTITUTE INVESTIGATOR AND O’DONNELL AWARD RECIPIENT Last year, Ralph DeBerardinis, M.D., Ph.D., a professor at CRI, became a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. His selection makes him one of a select group of 19 distinguished biomedical scientists named HHMI Investigators in the last year. HHMI selects Investigators who are consistently at the forefront of their fields and funds research in their laboratories. Dr. DeBerardinis also received the 2019 Edith and Peter O’Donnell Award in Medicine from The Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas (TAMEST).

The O’Donnell Awards — which honor four researchers statewide each year — recognize outstanding achievements by Texas earlycareer investigators in science, medicine, engineering and technology innovation. These prestigious awards are a result of Dr. DeBerardinis’ work on the role of altered metabolism in human diseases, particularly cancer and inborn errors of metabolism in children. The DeBerardinis lab has pioneered new approaches to identify altered metabolic states, to understand how they contribute to disease processes in humans and to treat diseases by inhibiting disease-specific metabolic pathways. In 2014, Dr. DeBerardinis established the Genetic and Metabolic Disease Program (GMDP) at CRI to accelerate metabolic disease research by bringing together clinicians and researchers interested in these conditions. “My lab and I are so grateful to be recognized by HHMI and TAMEST for our research in human metabolic diseases. I am also grateful to Dr. Sean Morrison for recruiting me to CRI and creating a culture that cultivates risky, cutting-edge research,” Dr. DeBerardinis said.
DR. MISHRA CAPTURES NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH AWARD In October of last year, Prashant Mishra, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant professor at CRI, was awarded the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director’s New Innovator Awards for high-risk, high-reward research. “I’ve always been passionate about developing creative solutions for unsolved
problems,” Dr. Mishra said. “During medical and graduate school, I felt drawn to unsolved problems in biology, particularly those for which there is an unmet need.” Dr. Mishra’s research focuses on mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which are found in about 1 in every 5,000 people. Diseases that arise from these mutations are often untreatable, and research into this area is limited by the lack of reliable animal models — something Dr. Mishra hopes to change. His lab is generating mouse models that contain the same genetics and physiology seen in human patients. These models will reveal how the body responds to a mitochondrial mutation and may reveal new treatments for these diseases. “Many of the children diagnosed by CRI’s GMDP have mutations in their mitochondrial DNA that cause debilitating diseases. We do not understand the relationship between the DNA mutation and the disease symptom. The NIH Director’s New Innovator Award confirms the need for new tools and treatment options for diseases caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA, which are both understudied and usually untreatable,” Dr. Mishra said.

DR. ZHU ELECTED TO THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CLINICAL INVESTIGATION Hao Zhu, M.D., assistant professor at CRI and attending physician at Parkland Hospital, was elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI) in December of last year. The ASCI, which is one of the nation’s oldest and most respected medical honor societies, recognizes physicianscientists for outstanding biomedical research and academic achievements. “Being elected into the ASCI is a wonderful honor. It recognizes the importance of physicians at the lab bench. As a physician, I am lucky to participate in the experience of liver cancer patients in the clinic. I can see that the problem is complex and involves not only treating the cancer but also trying to support normal liver function. This is something that I did not fully appreciate before I joined the Parkland Hospital Liver Cancer Clinic, and it has inspired new work in my lab,” Dr. Zhu said. Dr. Zhu studies the relationship between injury, regeneration and cancer using liver cancer as a model. He hopes his research and clinical work will one day lead to treatments that promote tissue regeneration and prevent or delay cancer.

Children’s Medical Center Plano opened its doors in 2008 with one goal: To extend the compassionate and expert health care Children’s Health has been known for to the fast-growing pediatric population of Collin County. Since then, our team in Plano has performed nearly 65,000 surgeries and has seen nearly 400,000 visitors in our Emergency Department, which also recently received its Level IV Trauma Facility designation from the Texas Department of State Health Services. The number of families that turn to us for care each year continues to grow, reaching over 82,000 patients in 2018. The campus is now home to two specialty centers: Specialty Center 1, which offers a wide array of pediatric subspecialty care, and Specialty Center 2 Plano, which opened in 2018 and is now home to the Children’s Health Andrews Institute of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, an ambulatory surgery center, an outpatient imaging center and clinical office spaces.

We continue to invest strategically in our campus through facility expansions and upgrades in the latest technologies, while exploring new ways to enhance the experience of our patients through our patient and family support programs. We have a lot to be proud of over the past decade. Children’s Medical Center Plano is filled with several “first-of-its-kind” specialty clinics in the region. Because of that, our experts offer a wide range of care for our pediatric patients, and we are continuously enhancing our offerings to ensure we are able to meet the needs of our community in the future. With rates of sports-related injuries in children on the rise nationwide and with more children enrolled in athletics in the Plano and surrounding areas than most anywhere else in the country, the Children’s Health Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine opened on the Plano campus in 2015 to

rehabilitate and train young athletes. As the first pediatric institute of its kind in the region, it has quickly become a leader in innovative orthopedic and sports medicine care. The Children’s Health Andrews Institute is housed in a new state-of-the-art facility with advanced equipment and imaging to match its world-class care for young athletes, including an anti-gravity treadmill and aquatic therapy; a turf field and synthetic sprint track; a specialized dance floor and a biomechanics lab offering sports movement assessments — all aimed at keeping student athletes across North Texas safe.
REES-JONES CENTER FOR FOSTER CARE EXCELLENCE The Plano location of the Rees-Jones Center for Foster Care Excellence is a fixture of this crucial program that serves some of our state’s most vulnerable residents. Since the new and enhanced clinic opened on the Plano campus in 2016 in conjunction with Child Protective Services, Children’s Health
experts have provided integrated care as well as resource and care coordination for more than 2,300 children in the foster care system. The Rees-Jones Center team also is dedicated to advocating for improvements in the foster care system through legislative, research and educational efforts.
INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY SUITE Fueled in large part by philanthropic sources, the interventional radiology (IR) suite completed in 2017 filled a critical need in patient care on the Plano campus for minimally invasive diagnostic assessments and targeted therapies. Guided by detailed images that decrease risks, recovery time and discomfort for patients, these assessments and therapies potentially eliminate the need for surgery altogether. Thanks to a robust IR suite in Plano, patients requiring PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) lines, which are often placed to provide prolonged intravenous treatments

such as chemotherapy or extended antibiotic therapy, are no longer required to transfer to Children’s Medical Center Dallas for the procedure. Instead, they are able to remain in Plano, improving the patient-family experience and scheduling logistics on both campuses.
FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES A hospital stay can be an uneasy experience no matter a patient’s age, but it can be especially frightening for a young child. Children’s Medical Center Plano offers supportive services for patients and their families, such as a full-time Child Life program that includes two in-house therapy dogs, Flora and Patton; social work; language interpretation services; pastoral care; school
and library programs and other services and amenities to make each child’s stay and family’s experience as positive as possible. In 2018, we also introduced a new playground on the Plano campus with support from the Women’s Auxiliary to Children’s Medical Center Plano, highlighting the importance of childhood activity and the value of “letting kids just be kids” – even when they’re in the hospital. As we reflect on our 10-year anniversary in Plano and acknowledge our achievements, we want to thank you for the role you have played in our success. None of this would be possible without the support of our community. By working together, we can continue to make life better for children for decades to come. 21

North Texas – ranked among the top five most charitable regions in the country – is full of nonprofit organizations making a difference in our community. Being a crowded field, many voices are competing to become a charity-of-choice – an organization top-of-mind when donors make charitable giving decisions.

To increase community awareness about the life-saving work performed at Children’s Health, the Children’s Medical Center Foundation launched the philanthropic expression “I Choose Children’s” in 2018. A wide variety of community influencers – including well-known athletes, grateful families and patients, employees and community leaders – are sharing stories through traditional and social media channels of why they choose to give to Children’s Health. The collective movement encourages others to join in making donations of time and money, which support countless initiatives such as social work, music and pet therapy,
pastoral care, child life services, clinical research and capital renovations. We’re also creating new engagement opportunities for community members with events like Cape Day, celebrating our superhero patients with thousands of capes worn in North Texas and beyond, and the “We’ve Been BOOed!” yard sign campaign across the area during October. We are proud of the early successes of the “I Choose Children’s” campaign, but we know the work is just getting started. As we look forward to 2019, we hope more people in our community will join us as active partners in the mission to make life better for children.

“WE’VE BEEN BOOED!” NEIGHBORHOOD YARD SIGN CHALLENGE During the month of October, North Texans got into the Halloween and giving spirit by participating in the inaugural “We’ve Been BOOed!” challenge. By taking the Halloween tradition from simple neighborhood trickery to a community fundraiser, every sign sold provided a Halloween treat to one of our patients. Neighbors purchased over 1,000 spirited “We’ve Been BOOed!” signs to display in their yards and share their love of Children’s Health with friends and neighbors.
NORTH TEXAS GIVING DAY In 2018, 685 donors raised more than $900,000 for Children’s Health on North Texas Giving Day. With your support, we placed second on the large organization leaderboard. Help us reach No. 1 in 2019 and plan to participate on Sept. 19.
“WE CHOOSE CHILDREN’S” EMPLOYEE CAMPAIGN Our team members are the heart and soul of Children’s Health, and they have eagerly embraced the “We Choose Children’s” employee campaign. The initiative gives employees the opportunity to give back to any department or program. Last year they gave generously, and it sparked an incredible movement, raising more than $340,000.

CAPE DAY Cape Day is another new awareness initiative honoring the more than 278,000 patients treated each year at Children’s Health. These superheroes possess matchless strength and courage as they wage battle against their illnesses and injuries from their hospital beds, their classrooms and their neighborhoods. Children’s Health invited members of the community to support our superheroes by sponsoring a cape for patients in the hospital and purchasing a cape for themselves. Celebrity athletes such as Jordan Spieth and Dirk Nowitzki donned capes and shared photos on their social media pages to encourage the community’s support. More than 2,000 capes were distributed across our region in 2018. We hope you’ll join us for this year’s celebration on Nov. 7.

“WHAT’S UP, DOC?” BREAKFAST SERIES On Oct. 11, 2018, we launched a new inspiring breakfast series called “What’s Up, Doc?” Attendees heard from Dr. Stephen Skapek and Dr. Ted Laetsch, two experts in the Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Health. They shared the incredible, life-changing story of a patient whose cancer is now in remission after participating in a breakthrough cancer research study for an experimental drug. The next “What’s Up, Doc?” breakfast will be offered at The Rustic in Dallas on Oct. 10.

With 5,302 registered participants, the Alliance Data Red Balloon Run & Ride raised $800,842 for Children’s Health in 2018. Title sponsor Alliance Data — the data and marketing company whose headquarters is a neighbor to Children’s Health Plano — along with 10 other sponsors and more than 630 volunteers joined together to support the event. Families and Children’s Health caregivers made up most of the 207 teams, choosing programs and services like Our Children’s House and medical camps to benefit from their fundraising. Thank you to all who participated, including Joel T. THE RED BALLOON CHILDREN HELPING CHILDREN TENNIS TOURNAMENT More than 450 youth tennis players registered for the Red Balloon Children Helping Children Tennis Tournament last September, raising more than $110,000 for Children’s Health. The tournament has raised $3.3 million since its inception in 1991. Funds support the Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Health, which cares for more than 1,000 new patients each year. The event was started in honor of Clint Sumrow, whose life was saved after being treated for cancer at Children’s Health at age 5. Now he serves at the annual tournament as event volunteer co-chair, along with his sisters.

FRIENDS The Women’s Auxiliary to Children's Medical Center The Women’s Auxiliary to Children’s Medical Center raised nearly $950,000 in 2018, bringing their support to more than $21 million in total fundraising for Children’s Health during their storied 56-year history.

With more than 800 members, the Women’s Auxiliary raises funds and serves as advocates and volunteers at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and Plano campuses. Their selfless support started in the Auxiliary’s early days, as members assisted staff by admitting patients, running samples to the lab and establishing and operating the Children’s Corner Gift Shop. In 2018, the Auxiliary’s enduring tradition of good works resonated throughout the health system, as they served dinner to patient families during the holidays, provided snack baskets to critical care waiting areas and distributed essential care items to families experiencing unexpected hospitalizations. The Auxiliary fundraising events are beloved
annual traditions like the reimagined Breakfast with Santa Spectacular and festive Santa’s Workshop. Signature Spring events include Family Night at Six Flags and Legacy of Love Benefit & Fashion Show. Funds raised by the Women’s Auxiliary support critical patient programs, research, intensive care and the purchase of life-saving medical equipment. The Women’s Auxiliary was established in 1962 by combining the auxiliaries from the precursors of the modern-day Children’s Medical Center: Bradford Memorial Hospital for Babies, Children’s Hospital of Texas and Richard Freeman Memorial Clinic. Changemakers for Children’s Changemakers for Children’s – a newly formed group of high school students passionate about the mission of Children's Health – launched their advocacy and fundraising efforts in 2018. Equipped with a toolkit of fundraising and leadership skills, Changemakers made an impact in their schools and spheres of influence by raising awareness, inspiring action and fundraising for Children’s Health. In 2018, several Changemakers volunteered for events like Sundaes on Sunday at American Girl and the Dallas and Plano Tree

Lightings. During the holidays, a group of Changemakers assembled and donated stockings to hand out to patients. Plans developed for fundraising efforts, including letter campaigns, bake sales and social media campaigns to benefit the Child Life program's work to make the treatment environment more child-friendly.

The One Society The One Society, a group of young professionals supporting Children's Health, fulfilled their mission of engaging and fostering young leaders to make life better for children with philanthropic, educational, fundraising, volunteer and social opportunities throughout the year. In 2018, The One Society raised $10,000 for their beneficiary, the Child Life Program, which provides emotional support, education and advocacy to nearly 40,000 kids at Children’s Health each year. Funds were raised through events like the Red Balloon Run and Ride, Quiz for a Cause and the group's signature, Night in White event.
The One Society consists of 75 active members who also gave their time and efforts in 2018. The One Society volunteered their time at the Child Life Zone and the Solid Organ Transplant Holiday Party, where members participated in crafts and cookie decorating with some of the transplant patients at Children’s Health.

BOARD Children’s Health Board Members Children’s Health welcomes new board members appointed in 2018.
CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER FOUNDATION Mary Martha Pickens is a senior vice president and private client manager for U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management. With more than 24 years of industry experience, Mary Martha works closely with clients to develop tailored wealth management strategies. Throughout her career, Mary Martha has been actively involved in the community and serves on multiple boards for healthcare and charitable institutions. Mary Martha earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Houston and a bachelor’s degree in business communications from the University of Texas.
CHILDREN’S HEALTH SYSTEM OF TEXAS Lee Jackson formerly served as Chancellor of the University of North Texas System from 2002 until 2017, following a 30-year career in state and local government. Lee is a member of the Board of Directors of the Dallas Citizens Council and the Dallas Regional Chamber, where he chaired the University CEO Council. At the national level, he served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of System Heads (NASH). Born in Austin, Lee received his B.A. in political science from Duke University and his Masters of Public Administration from Southern Methodist University. He is married to Margaret Jackson and has four children and four grandchildren.

Caren Kline, a former marketing and real estate executive, is nationally recognized for her work in the hotel and resort industry. Caren culminated her 25-year career as corporate vice president of marketing for Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, where she served an instrumental role in the development of the Wyndham brand. For the past 20 years, she has dedicated her time to making Dallas a better community, especially for children, serving in leadership positions for charitable causes across the city. Caren is a graduate of Cornell University and earned a Master of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University.
CHILDREN’S HEALTH SYSTEM OF TEXAS Robbie Briggs serves as president and chief executive officer of Briggs Freeman Sotheby's International Realty, the Dallas-based global real estate firm founded in 1960. Robbie is passionate about serving the community. He is on the boards of the Dallas Regional Chamber, the Fort Worth Chamber, VisitDallas, YTexas and the advisory board of BBVA Compass bank. He has a master's degree in architecture from Tulane University, and he is married with five children.
Sylvia Cespedes is trained as an industrial engineer with a specialty in quality control in service industries. She started her career at L.L. Bean in Costa Rica, helping set up and operate the procurement and supply chain organization and processes in Latin America. After L.L. Bean, Sylvia worked for at the T.J.X Companies in Massachusetts where she specialized in sales and inventory optimization. In addition to her undergraduate and graduate training in engineering, Sylvia has formal training in interior design. In Dallas, Sylvia is active and serves a number of civic organizations, including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Garden, the Museum of MADI and Geometric Art and Children's Medical Center of Dallas.
Dotti Reeder, CPWA®, serves as a managing director on the Client Advisory Team at Tolleson Wealth Management. She provides a strategic wealth management process for clients by identifying and implementing strategies that meet each client’s investment, financial, tax, philanthropic and wealth-transfer needs. Before joining Tolleson Wealth Management, Dotti was a managing director with JP Morgan Private Bank. Dotti earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from the University of Texas at Austin. She serves in leadership roles with Executive Women of Dallas, Business Council for the Arts and Culture and Nexus Recovery Center.
CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER DALLAS - ASSOCIATES Ghousuddin Syed joined ISN in 2014 and currently serves as the director of the products team. Prior to joining ISN, he worked for 14 years at Yahoo! where he served as director of engineering for several different platforms, including video, personalization, cloud and big data. Prior to working at Yahoo!, Ghousuddin was a software engineer with the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Va. He holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering with a minor in computer science, from Cleveland State University. Ghousuddin is a member of the GIAC Information Security Advisory Board. He lives in Dallas with his wife and four children.

IN MEMORY GENE BISHOP
A business legend and role model philanthropist, Gene Bishop quietly and generously supported Children’s Health for more than 40 years, along with the continuing support by his wife, Kathy. Sadly, Gene passed away on Feb. 22, 2019. With our deepest condolences to his family, we celebrate Gene’s life and honor his long commitment to the mission of making life better for children. Last year, the couple pledged over $6 million to support Children’s Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern, which conducts cutting-edge research at the intersection of cancer, stem cell biology and metabolism. Based upon an earlier gift, the CRI director, Dr. Sean Morrison, also holds the Kathryne and Gene Bishop Distinguished Chair in Pediatric Research at UT Southwestern. In addition to many volunteer roles over the years, at the time of his death, Gene continued to serve as an honorary life member of the Children’s Health System of Texas board of directors.
