TRAINING TOMORROW’S HOSPITAL LEADERS

$1 MILLION GIFT SUPPORTS THE CHRISTOPHER J. DUROVICH ADMINISTRATIVE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

As a teenager, Carlie Cohen knew she wanted to work in health care

Maybe she’d be a physician Or perhaps she’d be a psychologist

In college, she landed on Child Life specialist — inspired by the experience of her favorite high school teacher’s daughter, Krisanna, as a pediatric cancer patient

Through an internship as an undergraduate, Carlie learned about the health care administration profession and decided to pursue a master’s in health administration

“I knew hospitals had a CEO, physicians and clinical staff, but I had never thought about the business and leadership roles that play a part in an individual hospital or health care system,” Carlie said

In 2010, she landed a spot in the Children’s Health Administrative Residency Program, an educational opportunity that built a solid foundation for a more-than-a-decadelong career at Children’s Health

Now, Carlie serves as vice president of outpatient operations, overseeing outpatient services as the “front door” to the health care system for patient families

Carlie said the residency program is an investment in future leaders, but it’s also a financial investment that relies on generous donor funding

“From day one as a resident, I’ve had mentors and leaders who invested, believed and advocated for me to be a strong leader,” Carlie said “That speaks volumes to the mission of Children’s Health that they want to invest in and grow future leaders ”

Earlier this year, Children’s Health announced a $1 million donation from John and Susie Adams to establish the John and Susie Adams Excellence Endowment in support of the Children’s Health Administrative Residency Program

The post-graduate residency program provides additional training and development of future health care leaders to strengthen their understanding of the structural, financial, operational and management of the complex health care system and its impact on population health science

The program has been renamed the Christopher J Durovich Administrative Residency Program in honor of the Adamses’ friend and Children’s Health president and chief executive officer

“Very few organizations have the inspiring leadership that Chris Durovich provides to Children’s Health,” said John Adams “Susie and I are very pleased to recognize this by renaming the residency program after him We are fortunate to have Chris and Christina Durovich so focused on ensuring Children’s Health continues to provide the best quality care Our belief is the graduates of this endowed residency program will be better able to provide hospitals across the country with visionary leadership like Chris ” Children’s Health has sponsored an administrative residency program since 2005 in partnership with several universities to provide practical, in-depth experience in health care leadership for students pursuing Master of Business Administration and Master of Health Care Administration degrees The 11-month program — which connects residents with the president and CEO, as well as the CEO’s direct reports across various areas of the business — is recognized among these universities as highly desirable, rewarding and career-advancing Residents gain invaluable experience and develop leadership skills in areas such as quality improvement, strategy, human resources and the financing of health care

From day one, I’ve had mentors who invested, believed and advocated for me to be a strong leader. CARLIE COHEN

“It is a distinct privilege to have the opportunity to participate in the professional development of future leaders in our industry,” said Chris Durovich, president and CEO of Children’s Health “Susie and John’s investment celebrates and helps us fulfill the educational mission of Children’s Health; it advances our profession — today and for future generations We are grateful for their generosity, and I am humbled that they have named our program in my honor ”

John and Susie Adams have been longtime supporters and advocates of Children’s Health John has served on the board of directors of Children’s Medical Center Foundation since 2008 and previously served for many years on the board of directors for Children’s Health System of Texas and Children’s Medical Center Dallas, which he chaired

“For more than two decades, John and Susie have given generously to support areas of need most important to Children’s Health,” said Brent Christopher, president of Children’s Medical Center Foundation “Their creation of an endowed fund for the administrative residency program is the first of its kind at Children’s Health and ensures we can continue to help mold future hospital leaders who are dedicated to making life better for children ”

Carlie said educational endowments such as this go a long way toward preparing future leaders with the skills to grow alongside an expanding hospital system that looks very different from when she started as a resident more than a decade ago

“Because of the residency program, I was given the skills and mentors that allowed me to grow with the system,” Carlie said “So as Children’s Health got more complex, and we were able to do more for more kids, I’ve been able to grow and influence the care that’s delivered to thousands of kids just like my high school teacher’s daughter, Krisanna, every day ”
