To Our CDS Community of Supporters, If you walk across our campuses on any given morning, you will witness moments of learning bursting from our students and teachers at every turn. It begins with a spark of wonder: a preschooler crouching in the farm & garden asking why earthworms move the soil; a first grader puzzling over how to make a cardboard city accessible to everyone; a middle schooler asking how urban spaces can better serve neighboring communities. At Children’s Day School, wonder is not just a passing feeling. It is our educational engine. It moves our students from “I don’t know” to “I wonder why,” and ultimately to “Here is how we can make a difference.” As we reflect on the past year in the 2025-2026 Annual Report, we celebrate the theme that guided our Annual Fund: Spark Wonder. SPARKS OF WONDER: How Your Generosity Ignites Learning
Walk down the hallways of our school on any given day, and you’ll hear the hum of discovery from the classrooms. You’ll catch snippets of conversations about food chains over lunch, see first graders debating color choices alongside local artists, and spot fifth graders sketching architectural designs inspired by forest fire ecologies. Every gift to CDS helps bring the annual fund theme to life: Spark Wonder. But what does wonder actually look like in practice? It isn’t an abstract idea in a textbook. It’s hands-on, dynamic, occasionally surprising, and deeply transformative. Thanks to the support of our donor community, our teachers have the resources, flexibility, and space to turn everyday curiosity into unforgettable learning journeys. The following three vignettes from this year showcase exactly what your gifts make possible across our school.
1 EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM:
The Great Snail Population Boom Math, Empathy, and the Ethics of the Natural World What began as a modest preschool investigation into backyard mollusks quickly turned into a full-blown scientific event when our classroom terrarium experienced a baby snail boom! Rather than seeing a logistics problem, our preschool educators saw an extraordinary learning opportunity. Math emerged naturally as four-year-olds counted tiny white egg clusters, compared shell diameters, and estimated population sizes. When it became clear that hundreds of baby snails couldn’t live in the classroom indefinitely, the students were invited to solve the puzzle. Student ideas ranged from “taking them to live in the snake’s home” to “releasing them in the forest.” The inquiry blossomed into a deep exploration of food chains and ecosystems. Students learned about predators and prey, classified omnivores and herbivores, and visited Tree Frog Treks to donate snails as food for reptiles and amphibians. When it came time to release the original adult snails into a garden, the children practiced profound empathy. As one student thoughtfully observed, “I can kind of understand why you let the snail go. It would have been lonely there all alone.” Through your gifts supporting dynamic classroom environments, the Farm & Garden, and community partnerships, our youngest learners gained not just scientific and mathematical knowledge, but emotional intelligence and respect for living things.
2 LOWER SCHOOL:
Art Beyond the Canvas Creativity, Inclusion, and Neighborhood Action As part of their neighborhood inquiry unit, where students explored how they can actively make a difference, first graders partnered with several neighborhood organizations, including Creativity Explored and Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. Artists from Creativity Explored visited the classroom to conduct hands-on workshops, giving students a firsthand look at a studio in San Francisco that partners with artists with developmental disabilities to celebrate and nurture the creative potential in all of us. For a second community engagement moment, our first graders turned their creative energy toward helping animals in need, designing custom adoption posters for senior dogs at Muttville. Donor contributions fund these vital community partnerships, studio supplies, and field trips. Because of your philanthropy, our first graders aren’t just learning how to paint and draw, they are learning how to use art as a voice for empathy, advocacy, and neighborhood connection.
3 MIDDLE SCHOOL:
Young Fire Ecologists & Nature’s Blueprint Data Analysis, Biomimicry, and Safe Science In the Middle School, fifth graders took on the mantle of professional fire ecologists. Analyzing forest health data from before and after low-intensity prescribed burns, students investigated how living systems adapt to and benefit from fire. Each student researched a specific organism adapted to fire ecosystems and used models to understand how matter moves through an ecosystem. Next, they designed engaging interactive teaching tools to share their findings with their peers, learning from each other in a student-designed museum setting. The highlight of the unit was a fascinating biomimicry challenge, where students applied principles they learned from fire-adapted plants and animals to design a fire-safe school. Your gifts keep our science curricula, research tools, and hands-on modeling materials state-of-the-art, giving our students the foundation they need to grapple with real-world environmental challenges with creativity and rigor.

This incredible show of support speaks volumes about our shared commitment to CDS and sparks wonder for every student. The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of philanthropy at CDS and our most important fundraiser of the year. It directly supports every student’s learning journey by funding the people, programs, and resources that make a CDS education truly exceptional. It was truly an unforgettable evening celebrating all that we love about our city and CDS at Bimbo’s 365 Club, filled with festive music, creative costumes, and generosity. Together, we raised more than $532,000 for CDS. This year’s Fund-a-Need raised over $210,000 to support technology initiatives from preschool through 8th grade, ensuring our students’ environment remains innovative, safe, and connected. Throughout the year, our community hosted a myriad of fantastic count-me-in parties that both fostered community connections and raised funds for the school. We are so grateful to the entire CDS community, especially the amazing planning committee, volunteers, sponsors, and every guest who participated in the auctions, Fund-a-Need, raffle, and the rockin’ dance party!

Grandparents & Special Friends Day In May, we welcomed grandparents and special friends to campus for a joyful day of connection and celebration. It was a meaningful opportunity to share the CDS experience, highlight our students’ accomplishments, and honor the important relationships that enrich our school community.

The day began at our Friday assembly with an all-community sing and musical performances from TK alligators, fourth graders, and middle schoolers. From social gatherings to classroom visits to student art showcases, the day reflected the spirit and heart of CDS. The special day took place right before our Country Fair, which allowed more grandparents and special friends to participate in one of CDS’ most beloved traditions.

Eighth Grade Gift: Thank You to the Class of 2026! Each year, the eighth-grade class leaves a meaningful gift to the school as a gesture of gratitude and a legacy for future generations of CDS students. This year’s gift transforms memory into place: two hand-crafted, custom-built tables–a conference table for the 333 campus and a student work table for the 601 student lounge–made from reclaimed wood from the trees removed from the 333 yard during the Come Together Campaign. Alongside the tables, the Class of 2026 funded a refresh of the 601 student lounge and made a contribution to the CDS Endowment for Mission-Driven Resilience. The trees that once shaded the 333 yard witnessed years of recess, discovery in the farm and garden, and community gathered at weekly Assemblies. Rather than let that history disappear, the Class of 2026 chose to carry it forward, rebuilding it into spaces where the next generation of students will brainstorm, lead, collaborate, and connect. The refreshed 601 student lounge gives incoming students a place to grow more independent and get to know one another, while the 333 conference table anchors the community that shaped this class’s own years at CDS. The contribution to the Endowment for Mission-Driven Resilience carries the legacy further still. It helps ensure that CDS remains an inclusive, vibrant, and accessible community. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this year’s gift, and to the Class of 2026 for making their final act together as a class one that future CDS students will sit at, gather around, and be shaped by for years to come.

Every year, Children’s Day School recognizes alums who embody the changemaking spirit of our co-founder, Josef Cooper. This award celebrates their work to continue the legacy of action instilled in CDS students. Lorren Dangerfield, Class of 2008 Lorren is a dedicated public health professional and social justice advocate. After earning her degree in Sociology and American Multicultural Studies from Sonoma State University, she is currently pursuing her MSW at SFSU. Lorren works at the San Francisco Department of Public Health, expanding access to health care and critical services for vulnerable populations. From organizing grassroots campaigns like “Free MUNI for Youth” to her current health equity work, Lorren embodies a lifelong commitment to building a more inclusive San Francisco for all.

Sarah Quiñones, Class of 2015 Sarah has dedicated her career to pursuing justice in her home city. After completing her undergraduate studies at USC, she earned her Juris Doctor from UC Berkeley School of Law. Today, Sarah serves as a Deputy District Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco. As a Spanish-speaking professional, she serves as a vital bridge for diverse populations, inspiring others to see how foundational community values can evolve into a career of significant public impact. Oliver Yeaman, Class of 2020 Oliver, currently a sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis, bridges community service with cutting-edge space exploration. In addition to leading local service projects, he serves as the Chief Mechanical Engineer for WashU Satellite. There, Oliver co-developed the award-winning AIRIS telescope, designed to capture Gamma Ray Bursts 100 times faster than current technology and set to launch on a NASA research balloon next year. Oliver continues to carry forward the inquiry sparked during his time at CDS with his current work on SCALAR, a revolutionary fuel-free satellite mission.

Since its inception in May 2022, contributions have grown the endowment to approximately $4.3 million to help strengthen the school's future. Those gifts have been carefully invested to support the endowment's long-term mission, yielding investment returns added an additional $1.9 million in value after fees, bringing the endowment's total market value to approximately $6.3 million as of June 30, 2026. This growth demonstrates the compounding impact of philanthropy.
