This year, we chose not to list specific giving levels in this report to reflect our inclusive mission and values. At CDS, every gift is vital to our collective success and a meaningful expression of support for our vision. By removing financial tiers, we celebrate all contributions equally, fostering a stronger sense of community and shared purpose.
The CDS Mission
At Children’s Day School, what you learn and who you become are equally important.
CDS is a welcoming community in the big city, a farm and garden among urban streets, an advocate for responsibility to others as well as individual achievement, an independent school with down-to-earth values, always asking how we can do this better.
We strive for balance so students become both academically successful and grounded. They leave CDS confident, with the humility to listen and the resolve to speak up for what they see as right.

Dear CDS Community,
It is truly an exciting time to be part of Children’s Day School! As we approach our 30th anniversary as an independent school, there is much to celebrate. As one of our founders, Tracy Kirkham, noted at the ribbon cutting for the Treehouse, CDS started as a preschool. Today, our preschool to eighth-grade program reflects the same dedication to early childhood education that shaped our vision from the beginning. Now, after years of dreaming, our early childhood program has a home that truly supports both the expertise of our educators and the growth of our youngest learners.
Six years ago, we invited our entire community to imagine what our spaces could be, and their ideas have come to life in incredible ways. The rooftop slide, circular skylights, high windows, and colorful touches throughout were all inspired by student voices. Our students asked for more play space, larger pollinator gardens, and to honor the land, including the preservation of our two mighty elm trees. And here we are! Watching so many in our community take that first ride down the slide—whether it’s on their fifth birthday or during a visit back from college—is a reminder of the joy and togetherness that defines CDS.
Every step in creating this building has been guided by our mission—centering student agency and joy. Each decision was made with intention: designing spaces for teachers, considering our neighbors, ensuring true accessibility, and, of course, preserving our heritage tree. This was a true community effort, and I love seeing everyone together again for assemblies on the yard. The enduring legacy of this project will inspire future generations of students, a testament to the transformative power of community collaboration and the generous support of our donors.
The success of our Come Together Campaign highlights the incredible spirit of philanthropy at CDS. The energy around our Annual Fund and Bid & Bash was both joyful and generous, and every gift directly impacted our students. Thank you for your continued thoughtful support and for making CDS such a vibrant, nurturing place for children to learn and grow.

Dear CDS Community,
As we reflect on a landmark year for CDS, we are filled with immense gratitude, pride, and excitement for the future of our school.
At the heart of last year’s Come Together campaign was a shared belief in the power of community to accomplish great things, and we are thrilled to celebrate all that we achieved together. Thanks to the incredible support of our donors, we completed and opened our new Early Childhood Program center, a continuation of CDS’s foundational and mission-driven commitment to early childhood education. This state-of-the-art preschool, along with our beautifully redesigned outdoor spaces and new Hub classroom, has helped enhance our teaching and learning environment for every student, embodying the innovation, creative spirit, and academic excellence that CDS is known for.
It is a phenomenal feat that construction finished on schedule, just in time for the 2024-2025 school year! Navigating thirteen months of construction certainly had its challenges, but the patience, flexibility, and unwavering support of our teachers, families, and neighbors made it all possible. Thank you! We are also incredibly grateful to the many individuals whose expertise and dedication made this project possible, including Jensen Architects and Guzman Construction, the leaders of the Come Together campaign, and every one of our generous donors. And, of course, an extra special thank you to the CDS administration, faculty, and staff who made countless design decisions throughout the process to keep our students and their learning at the heart of the project, aligned with our mission, beliefs, and values. The joy on campus is palpable every day, and it’s all thanks to your support.
As we look ahead to this year, there are several exciting initiatives that we invite you to participate in. The Annual Fund is our most important fundraiser of the year, giving our faculty the essential tools they need to continue to provide an excellent education. Now that the Early Childhood Center is complete, our Board of Trustees is refining our Campus Master Plan and focusing on managing our growing $4 million endowment, established through contributions from the Come Together campaign. By the end of the year, we can look forward to welcoming two new lambs to our farm and garden, bringing even more joy to our community!

Celebrating Our Campus Expansion
On September 6, 2024, the Children’s Day School community gathered at our 333 Dolores Street campus to celebrate the grand opening of the new Early Childhood Program Center—a milestone made possible by the incredible generosity of our donors. This transformative project reflects the spirit of CDS: student-centered, imaginative, and deeply committed to fostering joyful, hands-on learning. The celebration culminated in a moment of pure delight as students took the inaugural ride down the 35-foot slide connecting the rooftop play yard to the ground—a feature inspired by student input during the design process.
True to our inquiry-based approach, the construction itself became a learning experience. Students explored the building process, engaged
with architects and construction teams, and turned their observations into creative projects such as blueprints, art, and an original film titled “The Sunny Day of Construction.”
Thanks to your support, the new 8,000-square-foot center exemplifies our commitment to early childhood education. Designed specifically for preschool and transitional kindergarten students, it includes classrooms built to exceed best practices, featuring classroom kitchens, skylights, plenty of space for multiple specialized learning areas, and access to a courtyard just for our youngest students. The courtyard, anchored by a heritage elm tree lovingly preserved during construction, connects students to nature while fostering curiosity and exploration. feature, apart from the slide of course, is the new rooftop that added 10,000 square feet of outdoor space to campus and now serves as a play yard for our youngest students, including a massive sandbox, and lunch area for all students.
“There aren’t many preschools housed in spaces purpose-built for how young children learn,” said Early Childhood Program Director Antonette Greene. “This center was thoughtfully designed to support curiosity, creativity, and connections, with features like whisper phones for classroom communication and vantage points from the rooftop playground to the yard below.”
Thanks to the unwavering generosity of our donors, CDS has created a space where our youngest learners can thrive. From classrooms that encourage active learning to rooftop play areas that invite exploration, every element of the center is a testament to the importance of early childhood education. Every gift played a critical role in making this vision a reality, and we are profoundly grateful for your support.

What a fabulously glamorous night we had at Bid & Bash, our community fundraising extravaganza! On May 4, 2024, the CDS community came together for an evening filled with glitz, glamour, and community spirit. From the stylish cocktail party to the electrifying dinner, auction, and dancing at the stunning Hibernia, it was truly a star-studded celebration. With over 325 attendees, we came together for a dazzling night that exemplified the heart of our community and supported our mission.
We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support throughout the night and in the weeks leading up to the event. The community’s contributions helped us transform our yard and rooftop garden into vibrant spaces for play, learning, and community celebrations for years to come.

Grandparents & Special Friends Day
In November 2023, we were delighted to host our Grandparents and Special Friends Day, a celebration of our students’ accomplishments and a chance for families to connect with the school community. The event began at Dolores Park Church with a warm greeting from Shelly Luke Wille, Head of School, who welcomed everyone and set the tone for a joyful afternoon.
The program featured a series of student performances by our Kindergarten, 3rd, 5th and 7th grade students. Songs kicked off the festivities bringing plenty of smiles and the program finished with performances filling the room with energy and creativity.
Following the performances, grandparents and special friends had the opportunity to explore the classrooms at both campuses. Students shared the projects they’ve been working on throughout the year. This was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to see firsthand the creativity, growth, and academic progress of our students.
The day was a heartwarming celebration of the strong bonds within our school community, offering a chance to showcase our students’ talents and the hard work they put into their education.
8th Grade Class Gifts
Class gifts are a wonderful tradition that allows CDS’ graduating classes to make a positive impact on the future of our students. Each year, the eighth grade class presents a gift to the school upon graduation. The gift is a symbol of the class’ gratitude to the school and commitment to the future generations of CDS students.
The Class of 2024 purchased sheep to join the farm on the CDS campus in the spring of 2025. Additionally, they gave a gift with a tangible legacy with an intentional contribution towards the CDS Endowment for missiondriven resilience.

Changemaker Award 2024
Each year, the Joe Cooper Changemaker Award and Grant are given to CDS community members who model the changemaking spirit embodied by Joe, our founder who had a deep commitment to student activism. The award honors the alumni of CDS alumni who have made a difference in their community, while the grant enables current CDS studnets to work on social justic projects which fulfull the school’s mission of active participating in personally and socially meaningful work.
We are thrilled to celebrate the 2024 recipients of the Changemaker Award: Lily Glickman (Class of 2013) and Blue Kennedy (Class of 2021)!
Blue Kennedy, a student at the Urban School, is co-founding RAACE Karts (Racing & Applied Creative Engineering), a nonprofit that introduces high schoolers to mechanical engineering by building and racing go-karts. Blue is passionate about addressing educational inequity, fostering creativity, and inspiring future innovators.
Lily Glickman, a UC Berkeley Environmental Studies graduate, plans to become a marriage and family therapist. Through her work at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and community involvement, Lily makes a meaningful impact on her peers and the broader community.
In 2024, the Changemaker Grant funded creative and innovative projects proposed during our annual Soup for Change event. Last year’s service project proposals included:
