Children’s Day School Mission At Children’s Day School, what you learn and who you become are equally important. CDS is a welcoming community in the big city, a farm and garden among urban streets, an advocate for responsibility to others as well as individual achievement, an independent school with down-to-earth values, always asking how we can do this better. We strive for balance so students become both academically successful and grounded. They leave CDS confident, with the humility to listen and the resolve to speak up for what they see as right.

Stay grounded Our garden, sheep, and chickens are magical for children and have something important to teach. The children become grounded in who they are, in the earth and how things grow, in caring for animals and for each other.
A Note from Board Co-Chairs Meghna Subramanian and Vivien Zraick At CDS we believe community matters, and this past year we were so fortunate to be able to bring our community together at events such as Grandparents & Special Friends Day, Bid & Bash, and our beloved Country Fair! This belief was on full display as our strong Community of Supporters (including Parents, the Board of Trustees, Faculty and Staff, Grandparents and Special Friends) raised over $1.1M in Annual Fund donations and over $1.8M in overall Annual Giving. We also want to celebrate the impact the New Early Childhood Center and Yard Reinvention will have on our CDS community!
Over the summer our campus was bustling with activity as we began demolition, construction, and the expansion of our 333 campus, a project that we have been working on for the past few years. Soon after the eighth graders graduated from CDS, we broke ground with a Demolition Party. Preschool faculty and staff, alongside board members and families, enthusiastically took swings with sledgehammers to help demolish the bungalows and commemorate this important milestone. Students and families also had a chance to reflect on all the fond memories of the preschool years by adding a drawing or a reflection on the walls. CDS is working closely with Jensen Architects and Guzman Construction on a 13-month construction timeline. We are happy to report that we remain on track to complete the project in the fall of the 2024-2025 school year. When completed, CDS will have a new building for four early childhood classrooms, an adaptable and flexible art and classroom space targeted for our youngest learners, and an enhanced and reimagined yard and outdoor play space. We are thrilled that by the end of this project CDS will have three buildings that maximize teaching and learning and reflect the overall excellence of our school. This project brings us full circle to our founding as a preschool and we are so excited to have a permanent home for our Early Childhood Program, expand the 333 Dolores campus, and enhance the outdoor play space. We hope you enjoy this issue of our Annual Report! You will read about achievements in student activism and social justice from our latest recipients of the Changemaker Awards. You will also hear from Eighth Grade Humanities Teacher Terry Ashkinos about his fellowship trip to Europe, as well as a story from one of our alumni who is thriving with his own radio program at the University of Arizona! We hope that all members of the CDS family feel as proud and grateful as we do to be part of this community.

A Message from Head of School Shelly Luke Wille Building the Future: A Year of Learning Innovation, Campus Expansion, and Building Community
It is truly remarkable to reflect on the progress and achievements that we’ve made as a school community over the past year. I find myself in complete awe of how we have been able to come together in such meaningful ways to continue our work of creating an even brighter future for Children’s Day School. I am honored to work alongside each one of you and trust that our collective enthusiasm and commitment will propel us into the coming year, building a brighter future for our students knowing that they will be both academically successful and grounded. In collaboration with our strategic partner reDesign, an educational design lab, we created an innovative competency framework which was designed to ensure that our faculty’s work in the classroom was aligned to our school’s mission, and enabled them to consistently assess and measure the growth of their students in the context of the CDS Learner Profile. In doing so, they could ensure that there was ongoing visibility into students’ progress and shared language to support deeper conversations and ultimately stronger partnerships between teachers, parents, and students. As we entered our early adopter phase, we worked with a cross-divisional team of faculty and observed them working collaboratively to enhance their proficiency with the competency framework. Many of the early adopters are now part of the Competency Implementation Team and are working to partner with other teachers in their respective divisions, serving as leaders who will model and demonstrate the work. As we embark on a new year of learning, you may already be experiencing some of the new language and approach to assessments in the classroom as teachers begin to incorporate their new educational learning. I am so excited to observe the positive impact that these changes will have on our students’ educational experience in the coming year. The 333 Campus Expansion Project is proving itself to be quite an exciting journey. It all began with our students creating storyboards of their hopes and dreams for a reimagined space and although we were not able to build a zipline or a unicorn ranch, we were able to incorporate many of their creative ideas into the construction project. The prior 2,880 sq. ft. bungalows will soon be replaced with a new Reggio Emilia-inspired 8,000 sq. ft. center that will feature a highly functional, student-focused building with six classrooms and a rooftop deck designed for inquiry, reflection, and play. The newly configured outdoor yard space will provide differentiated play areas and a beautiful gathering space for our entire community! This initiative promises to bring new dimensions to our learning environment, foster even more innovation, and elevate the overall educational experience for our students and community as a whole. During this phase of growth and expansion, I know that our shared commitment to our school’s mission will be our guidepost into the future. We are committed to our challenge of always asking ourselves how we can do this better and look forward to the future of learning at CDS!

Future Focused Learning: Bringing our CDS Learner Profile to Life
It was just a few years ago when our community embraced a future focused vision for learning at CDS and created the CDS Learner Profile. The CDS Learner Profile names the 10 core skills and mindsets embraced by CDS students, and serves as the north star for curriculum development. The CDS Learner Profile embodies our core beliefs and values as an institution and serves to distinguish our unique approach to educating young people as we imagine how education can lead to a more just world. Last school year, we partnered with reDesign, an education design lab, to bring the CDS Learner Profile to life in the classroom. Our goal was to create a tool that all our teachers can use to align their teaching to outcomes, and make the learning journey visible to students and families along the way. We established an early adopter team to allow us to test the model, receive feedback, and refine the framework to ensure a smooth and successful rollout with our broader team of educators. Our Early Adoption Team worked collaboratively to explore new resources, tools, and strategies to deliver educational experiences across divisions. Team members experienced both professional and personal growth as a result of their new approaches:
“We are really intentional teachers in the preschool and early childhood program…and so there are learning goals that are set for every activity. But then, it’s about [the student] talking about, doing, then reflecting on what they’re doing. It’s really designed to sort of open the doors to real growth. I started seeing how these learning intentions could come alive more robustly in the classrooms.” - Divya Vyas, CDS TK Teacher
Our educators are committed to helping students make their own connections with what they are learning and the world around them. “I would love it if our kids went out into the world ready to share their perspective on what they learned and listen to others and uplift other perspectives while being gentle and thoughtful when they hear a perspective that’s different to theirs.” - Darryl Owens, CDS Grade 5 Humanities Teacher In fact, many of our early adopters are now members of this year’s Competency Implementation Team; a team of faculty leaders who are facilitating the gradual introduction of this tool across all three of our divisions. Others are members of our Capstone Development Team, established this year to develop a signature capstone experience for our 7th-grade students, which will allow our “almost” graduates to apply the learner profile to a yearlong project. Our goal for this CDS Capstone Project is to demonstrate who our students are as learners and support their transition to high school and beyond. Harnessing the skills learned throughout their time at CDS, students will have the power to craft their own culminating project that they can take with them after they graduate.
A History of Community Philanthropy CDS is an extraordinary school with an extraordinary community. Since its founding as a nonprofit in 1996, CDS has had a rich history of community philanthropy. Our school has grown tremendously over the years in both geographic footprint and the number of students we serve. As we celebrate our 27th anniversary as an independent school, it’s been great to reflect on our history and the important milestones over the years.
Preschool Founding Since its founding in 1996, CDS has grown tremendously over the years in both geographic footprint and student size. Jim Robinson originally founded CDS as a for-profit preschool in the Excelsior district in 1983, and later moved to what is known as our 333 Dolores campus in 1987. In 1996 when Jim decided to retire, he sold the assets to a group of parents who established CDS as a non-profit. At its founding as an independent school, CDS prioritized social justice, diversity, and community. Over the following years, the school increased in size, adding a lower school and middle school.
Growth and Expansion In 2001, CDS had the opportunity to purchase the 333 Dolores site thanks to philanthropic support from CDS

families. With the board decision in 2003 to grow the school through middle school, in 2005 CDS placed three temporary bungalows on campus to house the preschool program. The following year, the first 8th grade class graduated from CDS. In 2008, a group of parents loaned CDS funds to purchase what is now known as our 16th Street Admin Building. This allowed the library, music room, and administrative staff to move to 16th Street and allowed the third floor of St. Joseph’s Hall to be built out into classrooms to accommodate the growing student body following the decision by the board in 2009 to grow the school to two sections per grade. This would be the school’s first capital campaign to renovate St. Joseph’s Hall - building five classrooms on the third floor and seismically enhancing the building.
lobby, adding more accessible pathways, and making necessary seismic structural upgrades to the building. CDS has a long-time partnership with the Boys & Girls Club to lease the gym. By raising funds at the Spring Auction in 2012, CDS partnered with the Boys & Girls Club to install Mr. Jim’s Gym Door, a door that provided direct access and was named in honor of Mr. Jim, a beloved gym teacher. Again in 2019, our community raised their paddle at Bid & Bash to build out the Community Library and Center for Inquiry shared by CDS and the Boys & Girls Club. This partnership presently continues with members of both our communities sharing resources. Today, we’re excited to be embarking on a full-circle journey to build a permanent student-focused early childhood building, a rooftop deck, and an outdoor space that will be a beautiful gathering place for Friday Assembly! The history of our school and facilities expansions is inspiring and a testament to the generosity of families, past and present, who made CDS as we know and love today!
In 2011, thanks again to the support of many generous donors, CDS purchased and renovated 601 Dolores, our middle school campus. This tremendous construction project took place over three years while the school raised funds for the capital campaign. In the spring of 2015, 601 opened its doors allowing our fifth to eighth-grade students to move in. In 2018, another capital campaign focused on making St. Joseph’s Hall accessible and welcoming to all by adding an elevator, modernizing the entrance with an official

Annual Fund Leadership Captains for 2022-2023: Each year, the Children’s Day School community participates in the Annual Fund, our most important fundraising event that provides unrestricted support to our operating budget and supports programs that enrich the lives of our students. We ask that every parent, trustee, faculty, and staff member make a gift and strive for 100% participation school-wide. Supporting the Annual Fund demonstrates our community’s collective commitment to the well-being of our students, and sends a powerful message that we are all invested in their growth, development, and academic achievements. In 2022-2023, the CDS community came together to raise $1.15 million through 97% participation and over 590 gifts. These gifts to the Annual Fund have a tremendous impact on our ability to sustain the school’s exceptional faculty, unique programs, provide classroom supplies, arts, athletics, field trips, new technology, and more. We would like to thank the following individuals, families, and institutions for generously supporting the Annual Fund.

On November 18, 2022, over 400 attendees gathered on the yard for a special extended Friday assembly, complete with musical performances and presentations. After assembly, the grandparents and special friends joined the students in their classrooms to see what they have been learning since the start of the school year.

Changemaker Award & Grants Each year, the Joe Cooper Changemaker Award and Grant are given to CDS community members who model the change-making spirit embodied by Joe, our founder who had a deep commitment to student activism. The award honors the achievements of CDS alumni who have made a difference in their community, while the grant enables current students to work on social justice projects which fulfill the school’s mission of active participation in personally and socially meaningful work.
The winner of this year’s Changemaker Award was CDS Class of 2020 graduate, Gabby Chen. Gabby exemplifies all the qualities of a Changemaker. As an activist for LGBTQ+ and women’s rights organizations, Gabby is dedicated to making a difference and inspiring those around them to do so as well. Gabby stays active in the community by volunteering with organizations like Project Open Hand, the Ocean Conservation Club, Pacifica Beach Coalition, SF Film Festival and more. They also serve as the CFO and co-founder of Youth for Political Engagement, a non-partisan organization that seeks to promote political involvement through nonpartisan initiatives. It is evident that Gabby is dedicated to creating a more inclusive and equitable society, and our community is a better place because of their leadership. In 2023, the Changemaker Grant funded five creative and innovative projects which included contributions from 15 middle school students. One 6th grade team of Changemakers (Harper Gregg, Marissa Johnson, Livi Ach, Odessa Kreischer, and Kaia Gassman) collaborated on a project benefitting endangered animals, hoping to make
the world safer for all animals to live in. The other 6th grade team (Lilah Rosenfield, Julia Foulke, Frankie Clay, Harper Solomon, Mahi Surafel, and Avery Schultz) used their grant to prepare baked goods and donate them to the Hamilton House Shelter through the Saint Ignatius meal drive. Growing up in the Bay Area, they have seen the impacts of homelessness on our community, and want to see a San Francisco where homelessness is non-recurring and all people have a safe and stable place to live. 7th graders Wilder Wendler and Noah Kirsch-Lopez focused their efforts towards creating accessibility to sports and recreation in their community to overall benefit mental health, quality of life and well-being for San Francisco youth, and Sophie McFadden created a website housing information and resources that can help young people navigate their identity, emotions, and mental health as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Finally, 8th grader Ana de Rijk Farey-Joes used her creativity to help CDS better understand the collective emotions of our community by surveying middle school students at the end of each day and using the data to create a moving art display. This project will allow us to reflect on how our community is feeling and then make changes to make sure everyone is feeling their best.
Bid & Bash 2023 On March 25, 2023, CDS brought back Bid & Bash for an out-of-this-world night at the San Francisco Design Center. Over 350 members of our groovy community came together for Cosmic Boogie to raise funds for the sliding scale tuition program.Approximately 26% of our students receive sliding scale tuition and thanks to the generosity of our families, community supporters, and staff, Bid & Bash grossed over $475,000. CDS is proud to continue to be a leader in socioeconomic diversity among San Francisco Independent Schools. We extend our deepest gratitude to the entire community for participating as volunteers, sponsors, donors, and auction bidders. The event was an intergalactic success!
2023 Paddle Raise for Sliding Scale Tuition A key component to Bid & Bash is our Fund-A-Need paddle raise, when the community comes together to show their support. This year, we raised over $260,000 from 152 donors to strengthen our commitment to socio-economic diversity. CDS continues to exhibit strong financial health and stability! The school operates with a balanced budget while adding strategic initiatives and investing in new personnel and programming for the children. Stable enrollment and outstanding fundraising have allowed CDS to be a leader in economic diversity among schools in San Francisco. Practicing one of the founding tenets of CDS, the school allocates 20% of tuition to sliding scale so that students can have access to a CDS education regardless of the parent’s ability to pay. As part of the strategic plan, the school remains committed to attracting and retaining talented and dedicated faculty and staff with competitive compensation and invests more than 72% of the budget in salaries and benefits.

The CDS IDEA Fund, established by a CDS family to support continued innovation in teaching, offers summer fellowships which help teachers explore innovative learning opportunities for themselves. This allows them to develop expanded curricular offerings and teaching strategies based on school priorities as well as their own interests. This summer, the fund sponsored a trip to Europe for Eighth Grade Humanities Teacher Terry Ashkinos, who researched the effects of the Cold War on East Germany in order to develop a lesson plan on World War II, the rise of fascism, and twentieth century political conflicts.
Inspired by these experiences, Terry is working on a curriculum which will promote curiosity and critical thinking in opposition to hate and oppression. “My travels have helped me understand how easy it is to fall victim to our worst impulses to hate and scapegoat,” he told us. “They have shown me how important critical thinking skills are and how we cannot let this wave of anti-intellectualism and disregard for science, experts, and facts steal the narrative.” At CDS, we hope that we can do our part in resisting the renewed wave of prejudice and oppression sweeping the world.
This project was inspired by Terry’s encounters with students and family members who have fallen prey to misinformation and conspiracy theories. As he described it, “liberalism and intellectualism become the enemy and the communities that traditionally support these values are scapegoated and called anti-American.” He decided to create a unit of study which examined the rise of oppressive societies in the twentieth century and connected it to modern events in Brazil, Turkey, Germany, China, Russia, Iran, Italy, and the US. Over the summer, Terry traveled through Italy, Turkey, and Germany. He visited sites that exposed the brutality of Nazi rule, suh as the Holocaust Museum in Rome, the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism, and Dachau Concentration Camp. He also explored the history of the Cold War, talking to both opponents and supporters of the USSR. Finally, he asked ordinary citizens about their experiences living under farright or authoritarian leaders such as Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey.

8th Grade Trip to Washington, D.C. As graduation approaches for our oldest students, they culminate their time at CDS with a once-ina-lifetime opportunity: a week-long trip to Washington, D.C. where they not only see the sights but also have the opportunity to act as changemakers!
Each year, Eighth Grade Humanities Teacher Terry Ashkinos guides his students as they choose a social issue that’s important to them, design a petition calling on the government to take action, collect signatures from San Francisco residents, and finally present their work in person to a leading government official. This year, their project was to advocate for the end of gun violence in America, and on their trip they delivered hundreds of signatures to the offices of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Dianne Feinstein.
“Our Washington, D.C. trip was one we will never forget because of the experiences we had visiting the three branches of government, touring the beautiful city, meeting with congressional staffers, and going to amazing museums—but also because of the chance to be together.” The Class of 2023 packed an amazing amount of learning and sightseeing into just five days. Their schedule included a White House tour, trips to museums (the Smithsonian, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Archives, the Holocaust Memorial Museum, and more), and visits to the memorials of figures ranging from Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King Jr. to Franklin D. Roosevelt to Thomas Jefferson. They also found time to take in a performance of Shear Madness at the Kennedy Center, a ghost tour through Alexandria, VA, and even a bowling night (“Terry said he would drop our research papers if someone beat him. He later admitted that was never true, but it gave us the strength to try our best,” said one student). Naturally, the key points of the trip were the students’ meetings with Rep. Pelosi’s Director of Legislation and Sen. Feinstein’s staff, where they got the chance to speak with those in
power and advocate for what they feel is right. The eighth graders’ final verdict: “Our Washington, D.C. trip was one we will never forget because of the experiences we had visiting the three branches of government, touring the beautiful city, meeting with congressional staffers, and going to amazing museums— but also because of the chance to be together.” This journey was an amazing example of students being just and courageous changemakers while also developing a meaningful sense of community.
Congratulations Class of 2023! 8th Grade Class Gifts Each year, the eighth grade class presents a gift to the school upon graduation as a symbol of the class’ gratitude to the school and commitment to the future generations of CDS students. This year’s gift is a special one connected to CDS’ beloved Farm and Garden program. The Class of 2023 presented CDS with a gift of $41,677 to refurbish the farm and add a new sheep house, drinking trough, concrete pad, food storage shed, and more! Alumni News & Events Urban Jazz Band Our students are making beautiful music together even after they graduate! The Urban School of San Francisco, one of several local high schools with a large population of CDS grads, is famous for its jazz band. We’re proud to say that four of the eleven performers in this year’s group are former CDS students, with a guitarist, a trumpeter, and two saxophonists all coming out of our music program. After taking Urban’s Intro to Jazz Band class, the quartet joined the band as a study hall activity and recently played in a winter concert. Although they’re lifelong music lovers, the jazz musicians credited their years at CDS with helping them develop and refine their interest in the craft. They especially praised their classes with Middle School Music Teacher Yari Mander, who has his students play together in small groups as they explore the world of sound. “The small groups with Yari were really fun because we had a lot of freedom to do whatever we want,” said Anand, the guitarist. “It was definitely one of my favorite memories.”
Jack, the trumpeter, agreed, saying that “it really opened up a new door into different types of music that we would be able to play.” At CDS, we encourage our students to share the joy they see in the world, and one way to do that is through the arts. We’re glad to see our alums continue to sharpen their skills and take their love of music onto a bigger stage!
Alumni Spotlight Giacomo Cain is a 2019 graduate from CDS, who is now a freshman at the University of Arizona. He is currently a photographer for the student-run Daily Wildcat publisher, with a concentration on sports and other school events in and around Tucson. He loved the teachers, meeting people in the Mission-Dolores community, and having lunch at Dolores Park. He credits his CDS education for his ability to learn about different people from different backgrounds, which has allowed him to thrive in college. Though Giacomo’s passion for photography began in 7th Grade, the spark came when he began using a professional camera given to him by his father. He received additional tips on the artistry behind the camera from his mother. Giacomo’s plan after graduating college is to continue pursing photography as his primary career choice, either for major league baseball or as a traveling journalist. Along with serving as a photographer for The Daily Wildcat, Giacomo is also part of the University of Arizona’s student radio station, where he hosts his own weekly show. His program includes music playlists, music conversations, and other topics of interest. You are invited to listen at: Kamp Radio, 5PM SF/AZ time every Wednesday. Giacomo’s words of wisdom for present-day CDS students: Get good grades when applying to high school, continue getting good grades in high school with an eye for college, and to take lots of photos on your field trip to Washington, D.C.!
