Guide to Giving:

Philanthropy and Children’s Hospital Colorado

2

A message from Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation Thank you for considering a philanthropic investment in Children’s Hospital Colorado. Your partnership is essential, and even pivotal, in helping Children’s Colorado achieve our goal of giving all children a chance to live a healthy life. Consistently ranked among the nation’s top pediatric hospitals, Children’s Colorado provides the full range of care to more infants, children and teens than any other hospital in our region. As Children’s Colorado continues to grow in order to meet our community’s needs, we are careful to be good stewards of the philanthropic investment our community makes. There are many ways to support the hospital’s efforts. Whether your gift is designated to a specific area or unrestricted, one-time or recurring, part of your estate plan or the result of a successful fundraiser, every gift helps Children’s Colorado provide world-class care for children and teens who come to us. These gifts help us find breakthroughs and cures. And, these gifts also help us partner with our community to prevent illness and promote health, so that fewer children come to us in crisis situations. This Guide to Giving is designed to help familiarize you with your giving choices and help you identify the ones that are right for you. Right from the start, we want you to have all the information and informed advice you need about the best choices for you related to making a gift. We also want you to have confidence that your gift will do exactly what you want so that it can bring the most benefit to the children and families we serve. We want you to feel confident that you are choosing the best way to support Children’s Colorado. We know that you have many options when choosing a way to give back to your community. We thank you for considering a gift to our hospital. Tremendous possibilities are within our reach. At Children’s Colorado, we are inspired by the potential that lies ahead and we are grateful to our generous philanthropic community for helping us improve the lives of children. Sincerely,

Steve Winesett President and CEO Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation 3

Meet Christina Sixteen-year-old Christina inherited a severe version of her mother’s asthma. Diagnosed at 18 months old, Christina still visits Children’s Hospital Colorado to ensure that her condition is kept under control. The first eight years of her life were the hardest, with Emergency Department visits every three or four months. “Whenever the seasons changed, if they just cut the grass at school—just about everything seemed to trigger an attack,” said Christina’s mother, Nicole. The most severe of Christina’s asthma attacks have required admission to the hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Today, thanks to her caregivers at Children’s Colorado, Christina is able to manage her condition well and pursue her passion—singing and playing the guitar. “The entire medical staff is amazing and they make both the parents and the kids feel completely comfortable and involved in their own care,” said Nicole. “The only way Children’s Colorado can work to find better treatments, and even cures, is through the support of the community.” childrenscoloradofoundation.org

Thanks to therapy at Children’s Colorado, Christina’s asthma doesn’t keep her from singing the songs she writes.

Ways To Give:

Annual giving When you make a one-time or annual gift to Children’s Hospital Colorado, your gift can change the lives of the patients and families we serve each day. Making a charitable contribution by cash, check or credit card is an easy way to support Children’s Colorado. If you itemize gift deductions on your income tax return, you may be able to receive a tax deduction for the full value of your gift, and will know that your contribution will help improve the care Children’s Colorado provides to children around the Rocky Mountain region and beyond. Whether large or small, every gift makes a difference. childrenscoloradofoundation.org

Ways To Give:

Planned Giving Planned gifts provide long-term support for children and families by helping Children’s Colorado build a financial pipeline to fund our mission of familycentered patient care, research, education, and advocacy. A planned gift can also provide financial benefits to you and your family. Whether you’re considering a simple bequest or a more complicated planning tool, such as a charitable lead trust, our planned giving professionals can help you examine the best charitable solution for you and your goals. Planned gifts include:

Bequest Give to Children’s Colorado through your will without affecting your cash flow during your lifetime.

Charitable Gift Annuity Receive a fixed payout and significant tax benefits during your lifetime and the lifetime of your spouse.

Charitable Lead Trust Discover an innovative way to pass appreciating assets on to family members while making gifts in the interim.

Charitable Remainder Trust Increase your income, reduce your taxes, unlock appreciated investments, and ultimately provide very important support.

Life Insurance Name Children’s Colorado as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or donate a policy that is no longer needed and receive income tax savings.

Retirement Plan Assets Take advantage of one of the best planning assets by naming Children’s Colorado as a beneficiary of your 401(k) or IRA. Simply complete a beneficiary designation form with your plan administrator. Individuals who have provided for Children’s Colorado through a planned gift are recognized in the Tammen Society. There are numerous additional ways to leave a legacy through thoughtful planning. Contact Kellie Fischer at 720-777-1751 or kfischer@childrenscoloradofoundation.org to find out more. 7

Ways To Give:

Tribute gifts Pay tribute to the important people in your life with a gift to Children’s Hospital Colorado. Tribute gifts might honor a teacher, parent, dear friend or caregiver, celebrate a birthday, wedding or special anniversary, or, remember a loved one who has passed. Each gift you make to honor a special person or event can help us improve the lives of children and families.

Stock Publically-traded securities are great assets to donate. They are easily valued without an appraisal and easy to transfer. Donating appreciated securities before they are sold typically results in a tax advantage. A tax deduction is normally allowed based on the market value of the securities at the time of the gift. Since the deduction is based on current value, rather than original cost, no tax is paid on the appreciation.

Real estate A charitable contribution of real estate – whether it is your personal residence, a vacation home, a farm, commercial real estate or vacant land – will give you numerous advantages. Gifts of appreciated property typically qualify for an immediate tax deduction and result in the avoidance of tax on appreciation. The amount of the deduction for a contribution of real estate is normally valued at the current market value of the property.
