Since 1978, Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation has been dedicated solely to advancing the mission of Children’s Hospital Colorado. As the only nonprofit children’s hospital in the region, Children’s Colorado relies on philanthropic support to provide world-class care to every child who needs it.

For more than 100 years, Children’s Colorado has worked to improve the health of children in our community. The broad array of strengths we have developed sets us apart from other hospitals. As we carry forward our momentum from 2012, we are positioned to seize incredible new opportunities in medical care for children.

Last year was a remarkable time of growth. Philanthropy was the driver of transformation in our institution, and more than 40,000 donors gave $23 million to Children’s Colorado. Our donors understand that in order to tackle today’s (Continued on page 5)

Support from our community impacts countless lives at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Each of the more than 186,000 patients treated at the hospital last year have shown courage, and their stories are as unique as those of the individuals who give to support their care.

In 2012, more than 40,000 donors made gifts to Children’s Colorado. Some of these donors were individuals and families, while others were corporations that encourage the spirit of generosity among their employees. Last year, our donors made more than 127,000 gifts on the hospital’s behalf – and this is the highest number of gifts the Foundation has ever received.

We are grateful for the generosity of a community that has allowed Children’s Colorado to pursue the highest-quality care for children and families. Your support allows us to hire the best staff, perform cutting-edge research that can save lives, and offer children in our own neighborhoods the best care, when they need it the most.

With a nearly 50-year of history of giving to Children’s Hospital Colorado, King Soopers has surpassed $1 million in gifts to the Children’s Fund supporting the hospital’s greatest areas of need. King Soopers has supported Children’s Colorado through numerous efforts, including in-store fundraising, employee giving and outright donations. Each summer the organization also provides thousands of dollars of food and beverages to support cyclists and volunteers in the three-day Courage Classic bike tour.

“We are thrilled to have an impact on children’s health in our region,” said Russ Dispense, president of King Soopers and City Market stores. “Our relationship with Children’s Colorado has been a priority for a number of years, and I am so proud of our team for offering their time and resources to support such an important cause.”

Dispense is a member of the Children’s Hospital Colorado Board of Directors and has been with King Soopers for 48 years. His leadership has inspired many employees to become involved in fundraising efforts, and each year more than 7,000 King Soopers and City Market associates participate in giving to Children’s Colorado.

“Our company culture is an anomaly today and the generosity of our associates is humbling,” said Kelli McGannon, director of public affairs for King Soopers. “Russ absolutely fosters a culture of giving, and it starts at the top by living it.”

This year, King Soopers will celebrate its philanthropic successes and membership into the Charles C. Gates Society. Established in 2006, the Gates Society recognizes donors who have contributed $1 million or more to Children’s Colorado.

King Soopers and City Market stores have 143 locations in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

Community leader finds hope through giving For more than 40 years, Ramon Montoya of Westminster has given back to the Denver-area community by volunteering his time to education and civil rights advocacy.

Because Montoya cares especially for children in the community, he recently established a $25,000 Charitable Gift Annuity to Children’s Colorado.

Born and raised in Las Animas, Montoya moved to Denver in 1972 to work for the State of Colorado after spending several years as a social worker. Montoya also served 24 years in the military reserves for the Army National Guard and U.S. Army. He is a graduate of Adams State College in Alamosa.

In 2000, Montoya was diagnosed with cancer and received treatment at St. Joseph Hospital next to the former Children’s Hospital location in downtown Denver. “They asked if I wanted to go over and see kids at Children’s, and when I saw those little children it really touched me,” he said. Recently he had the chance to meet Addison and Bella, two young children receiving cancer treatment at Children’s Colorado. He brought each of them a new backpack and soccer ball.

Giving to Children’s Colorado started with a small donation, and Montoya is now a member of the Children’s Circle of Care. He wants his most recent gift of $10,000 to be used for cancer treatment and research. “I am thankful God has let

me live this long. I don’t know what the future holds for me and I want to leave something behind,” Montoya said.

Montoya has served on the boards of numerous Latino education organizations in the Denver area and in 2008 was presented a civic leadership award from the Public Education and Business Coalition. He also supports the Denver Rescue Mission, St. Joseph Hospital Foundation, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy and the American Cancer Society.

Montoya’s desire to give was inspired by his parents Joe and Mary Montoya, also of Las Animas. “My parents always told me to help those less fortunate,” Montoya said.

He also finds inspiration in St. Francis of Assisi who said, “For it is in giving that we receive.”

Montoya has three children and three grandchildren. “I thank God they are healthy. I hope someday there will be a cure for cancer and kids don’t have to go through that," he said.

2012 Highlights

As we acknowledge the many highlights from last year, we thank our community of donors and supporters for having the courage to actively improve children’s health. In 2012: • Children’s Colorado received more than 127,000 gifts, a record number.

• We congratulated Dr. Frank Accurso as the chairholder of the Asher Family Chair for Cystic Fibrosis.

• We welcomed Dr. Marianne Wamboldt as the new chairholder of The Leslie and William Vollbracht Family Chair in Stress and Anxiety Disorders.

• We announced the creation of several new endowed funds and now have a total of 89.

• The Daniel and Janet Mordecai Foundation made a generous commitment toward the Pediatric Student Research Program.

• Team Children’s Colorado, our online fundraising tool, helped raise more than $150,000 from our community.

• The Salah Foundation supported Fetal Care Center research and the Experimental Therapeutics Program.

• We identified several new members for our Board whose collective wisdom, vision and passion for children’s health will help to guide our efforts in the years to come.

• We built the Family Giving Program to provide a muchneeded avenue for grateful patient families to support the hospital.

• We celebrated major gifts from J.T. Tai & Company Foundation, Inc. for The Center for Gait and Movement Analysis.

• A former Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals ambassador, Peyton Palermo, established an endowed fund for brain tumor research. The Palermo family raised $75,000 in just three months toward their goal of $2 million.

• We added 27 new members to our Tammen Society that honors donors who have included Children’s Colorado in their estate plans.

• Our Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraising programs, including our annual three-day radiothon, resulted in a record-setting $4.8 million.

• We raised more than $8.7 million through our special events and corporate giving program including the Children’s Gala, Courage Classic, and numerous cause marketing campaigns with partners like King Soopers and Walgreens.

Community support

Thanks to community partnerships in 2012, Children’s Colorado experienced significant growth and numerous achievements: • U.S. News & World Report ranked Children’s Colorado the 7th best children’s hospital in the country.

After fighting stage 3 H odgkin’s lymphoma, Preston has been cancer free for 5 years.

• For the first time in history at Children’s Colorado, fetal surgeries were performed.

• The East Tower opened on the Anschutz Medical Campus to serve more children.

• Three new care locations were opened, two moved locations, we broke ground on one new location, and acquired one new practice – all to improve community access to quality care.

• We began offering pediatric services at Children’s Hospital Colorado at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs.

These accomplishments would not be possible without a generous network of supporters who understand the connection between good health and a better quality of life.

Donors make a tremendous impact on our ability to meet the needs of children in our community, and we believe there is no better place than Colorado to raise the bar for children’s care. In the mountain states, bold and inspiring ideas are part of who we are, and with the partnership of our community, we will continue to pursue new frontiers in pediatric health.

The Barton Family Chair in Bone Marrow Transplant

The Children’s Colorado Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT ) Program team has been consistently recognized through national peer review for high-quality patient care and laboratory performance.

In a March 6 ceremony, Dr. Roger H. Giller was named the inaugural holder of The Barton Family Chair in Bone Marrow Transplant. “The patients challenge us every day to do what we do, and do it better,” Giller said during his acceptance of the chair. “Children’s Colorado is a unique place in an elite group of institutions. This chair represents the growing up of our program and it ensures continuity.”

Dr. Giller founded the BMT Program in 1993 and since then has served as the program director. For the past 26 years, he has supervised more than 900 patients who have undergone transplants. Dr. Giller has over 20 years of experience in laboratory and clinical BMT research, has produced more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and scientific review articles, and is a professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

“I know this investment is critical to the current and future work at Children’s Colorado.

I look forward to witnessing the impact this endowed chair will have on children and families for years to come,” said Laura Barton on behalf of The Barton Family Foundation, which funded the chair. Barton, currently the Chair of Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation’s Board of Trustees, has supported Children’s Colorado for a decade.

Over the past 12 years, Alice’s 36 Hours for Kids Radiothon has become one of the top Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ radiothons in the nation.

Circle of Care donor spotlight: John and Lesia Rehl Children’s Circle of Care recognizes individuals, family foundations and private corporations giving $10,000 or more to Children’s Hospital Colorado in a calendar year.

Like many Children’s Colorado donors, John and Lesia Rehl have formed new friendships and made great memories through their involvement in fundraising and events that support pediatric care.

The Rehls are Courage Classic veterans, Gala attendees and Circle of Care members.

But for John and Lesia, support of Children’s Colorado was inspired by a tragedy that shaped their lives. Almost 20 years ago, the Rehls lost twins Alexandra and Evan who were born prematurely at 23 weeks. In 1994, John rode his first Courage Classic as a way to honor the memory of his children. “While it was a devastating loss, what they have provided us and others in their memory is immeasurable,” John said.

Tough times such as his brutal bike crash at Turquoise Lake in 1998, or riding through welt-inducing hail on Vail Pass could not stop John from finishing the ride in those years, or continuing to return for more. After recruiting his wife Lesia to ride, the Rehls have added numerous friends to the tour, and eventually started the Village Idiots, a very successful Courage Classic fundraising team. “Completing my first Courage Classic was unforgettable,” Lesia said. “I wasn't sure I could ride all those miles, but with John's encouragement, and inspired by all the kids who I saw out on the road riding, it was an awesome feeling to cross the finish line cheered on by patients.”

During construction of the hospital’s new East Tower, John and Lesia had the rare opportunity to tour what would be the future home of the Colorado Institute for Maternal and Fetal Health, which opened last September. “The sheer scale of the project, the amount of planning and detail that goes into desiging a high-level

care facility for moms and babies was mind boggling," Lesia said.

“We now have a better understanding and appreciation for the expertise and high standards that Children's Colorado employs to provide world class service.

We're fans of the hospital all over again.”

The Rehls support the Maternal Fetal Institute as members of Children's Circle of Care, a society that recognizes annual gifts of $10,000 or more. Their generosity will help mothers and babies at high risk for pregnancy or birth complications receive comprehensive care. Services provided at the Maternal Fetal Institute include state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, comprehensive genetic testing and intensive care after birth.

“We continually search for causes to support in the twins’ name, and the Maternal Fetal program at Children's Colorado was such a natural fit. If we can help prevent just one family from experiencing a loss by supporting the program, then something positive has come from our tragedy,” Lesia said.

John and Lesia have two children who are both in high school. Their son John is interested in pursuing a career in sports medicine and will go to the University of California Santa Barbara in the fall, where he will play soccer. Their daughter Dominique is a freshman in high school and hopes to play college soccer and attend medical school.

The Helton Foundation makes the Welcome Program possible The Welcome Program covers logistics such as hotel accommodations, meals, hospital tours and other details that contribute to a positive, family-focused experience at Children’s Colorado.

Now in his 17th season with the Colorado Rockies, Todd Helton is the face of the organization, a likely Hall of Fame candidate and the all-time leader in nearly every category of his team’s statistics.

An All-Star on the field, Helton also has a significant impact outside the ballpark.

Helton and his wife Christy began giving to Children’s Hospital Colorado in 2010, and support from The Helton Foundation enables Children’s Colorado to offer a unique set of services through the Welcome Program. Designed as a resource to reduce stress and worry for families facing medical issues, the Welcome Program covers logistics such as hotel accommodations, meals, hospital tours and other details that contribute to a positive, family-focused experience at Children’s Colorado.

“We realize families have a lot of anxiety when they come here and we are prepared to help with their immediate needs,” said Debbie Schuster, Welcome Program Coordinator.

By proactively coordinating services and fielding questions throughout each family’s stay at the hospital, the Welcome Program also enhances communication between patient families and Children’s Colorado medical care providers. “We work in partnership with the care teams and collectively provide a supportive network,” said Stacy Schafer, Welcome Program Coordinator.

“Our kids are healthy and we are so thankful for that. Children’s Colorado is a tremendous resource, and while we hope our family never needs it, we want to support the medical care happening right here in our community,” the Heltons said in a statement.

Last year more than 1,500 families utilized Welcome Program services. Thanks to support from The Helton Foundation and other generous donors, the program continues to grow and is offered in almost all specialty areas at Children’s Colorado.

Welcome Program coordinators anticipate the needs of families down to the smallest details, and items such as water bottles and journals for recording medical notes are included in welcome bags that families receive upon arrival at the hospital.

Planning is particularly important for families traveling from outside the Front Range who often have to make arrangements that are difficult to coordinate on short notice or in times of emergency.

Welcome bags are a valuable component of the Welcome Program.

Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation exists only to support Children’s Hospital Colorado by raising funds and managing endowments that benefit the hospital. Normal distributions made in carrying out this function were $16.6 million in 2012. During 2012, endowments totaling $188.3 million were transferred to Children’s Hospital Colorado Health System, where they are invested and continue to support the hospital. Foundation net assets were $36 million on December 31, 2012.

These important gifts ensure that future generations will benefit from the research, family-centered care, clinical education and advocacy for which Children’s Colorado is known. Harry H. and Agnes Reid Tammen were among Children’s Colorado’s earliest most important philanthropic supporters. Harry gave Children’s Colorado its early motto, “For a Child’s Sake.” The Tammens established the Tammen Trust in 1924 to provide health care for children whose families could not afford to pay. Gifts supporting research and the Colorado Institute for Maternal Fetal Health at Children’s Colorado may qualify for additional tax benefits.
