We are excited to announce that Cille and Ron Williams will serve as honorary chairs for an imminent comprehensive fundraising campaign to support hospital priority areas essential to creating a healthier and more promising future for children.

Hospital and Foundation boards approved the decision to move forward with Campaign planning in April 2012 and are recruiting leadership to possibly launch the initiative in late 2014 or early 2015.

“Community support is critically important. Without philanthropic support, there wouldn’t be a Children’s Colorado,” said Ron, who is former president and CEO of Gary-Williams Energy Corporation.

• This summer, we highlight several philanthropic leaders, including Laura Barton and Cille and Ron Williams.

These dynamic community volunteers are excited by Children’s Colorado’s vision and are eager to use their time, wisdom and resources to make a true impact for children and families.

For a group of kids who rarely get to experience travel or be apart from their families, the unforgettable weekend included attending a baseball game, meeting Tulowitzki, and getting autographed baseballs and jerseys from Rockies players.

• We also spotlight a few long-time donors. Gertrude Arnold and the Scottish Rite Foundation have each partnered with the hospital for more than 60 years, while the Berger family has been providing support for a decade.

Jim Kellogg, Vice President of Community and Retail Operations for the Colorado Rockies and Chair of the Corporate Leadership Council at Children’s Colorado, learned of the interest in sending patients on a unique and unforgettable trip, and thought Tulowitzki would be interested in helping out. “I have a lot of respect for these kids,” said Tulowitzki, a three-time All-Star who has given previous gifts to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at Children's Colorado.

“They have faced some serious battles, and I’m happy to create an opportunity where they can escape for a little while and just be kids.”

• The name Troy Tulowitzki might sound familiar: he’s not just a great shortstop for the Colorado Rockies, he’s also a great supporter of children with cancer and blood disorders.

Patients had the opportunity to not only watch baseball and meet Rockies players, but to also share meals, challenge each other in arcade games, and build new friendships with others sharing similar life experiences and struggles with cancer and blood diseases. “It’s baseball, but it’s so much more,” said Dr. Robert Casey of Children’s Colorado, who helped organize the spring training weekend. “This trip allows our patients to get away from the hospital, their treatments and their daily routine of being sick. They get to be with other kids who understand the challenges of being a patient and going through diagnosis and treatment.”

U.S. News & World Report has ranked Children’s Colorado among the nation’s top children’s hospitals every year since 1993. Community leadership and investment has played a key role in transforming Children’s Colorado for more than 105 years.

The travelers were all patients of CCBD, the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Colorado. For many who attended, trips are rare—due to the complexity of their diseases, onthe-road care must be well-planned and monitored. Twelve caregivers accompanied those who made the journey to Scottsdale, so patients were able to experience a weekend free from the limitations of a hospital room.

This is the first trip of its kind for Children’s Colorado patients, and Casey hopes that similar trips for patients will take place in the future.

Denver native is 70-year Children's Colorado donor Gertrude Arnold has given to Children’s Colorado since the 1940s. Born and raised in Denver, Gertrude has an extensive family history along the Front Range, and for years her family has given back to the local community through philanthropy.

Gertrude attended Colorado College as a chemistry major. When she graduated, she was hired by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, becoming the first woman to work in the laboratory.

She spent her years there performing oil analysis to develop a process for determining the condition and maintenance needs of the railroad’s trains.

Early in her career, Gertrude knew she wanted to give away some of her earnings and began to look for a cause to support.

An aunt, to whom she was very close, was a donor to Children’s Colorado and encouraged Gertrude to consider giving money to the hospital.

Gertrude started giving small donations to Children’s Colorado in the 1940s. She continued to give throughout her career and while she raised her children. Her donations increased as years went on, and in 2007 she became a member of the Children’s Circle of Care, which recognizes gifts of $10,000 or more.

She also recently established her third Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) at Children’s Colorado. Based on her age and life expectancy, Ms. Arnold earns 9 percent, a significant incentive for her to choose a CGA over other investments she considered with relatively lower returns. Gertrude believes her CGA is not only a great option for someone her age,

but also that “giving is always good.” Her gifts support the hospital’s greatest areas of need ranging from equipment to research, and allow Children’s Colorado to provide care for more children and their families, regardless of their ability to pay.

Gertrude attends several annual events benefiting Children’s Colorado including the Little Hearts Luncheon and Fashion Show, Doctor’s InSight and the Tammen Society and Loyal Donor luncheon. “I just love to see those little kids,” she says.

She has three children who live in the Denver area, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren, one of whom was treated at Children’s Colorado as a newborn and is healthy today.

In addition to Children’s Colorado, Gertrude supports Colorado College, the Denver Dumb Friends League, the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the ALS Association, Ahlzheimer’s Association and the Webb-Waring Center at University of Colorado Hospital.

For decades she has enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables, and remains active in her garden.

Carolyn and Michael Asher The Asher Family Chair for Cystic Fibrosis was established to support research and improve treatments for children living with cystic fibrosis. Three generations of the Asher family joined together to create this endowment. The Ashers are members of the Charles C. Gates Society.

Laura Barton Laura Barton has served on the Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation Board of Trustees since 2010, has supported Children’s Colorado for a decade, and was recently named initial co-chair of the Campaign. Amy and Rob Millisor In 2006, the Millisors lost their son Jack who was waiting to receive a heart transplant. Their loss compelled the Millisors to support Children’s Colorado through numerous gifts, including creation of the Jack Cooper Millisor Chair in Pediatric Heart Disease Endowment. Rob joined the Children’s Colorado Foundation Board of Trustees in 2012. He and Amy are members of the Charles C. Gates Society.

Judi and Joseph Wagner The Wagners believe Children’s Colorado is special because of its specific focus on children in our community. "Something

about this hospital really touches the heart in ways no other organization can," said Joe. Joe became involved with Children’s Colorado in the 1980s, serving nine years on the Children’s Colorado Board of Directors. He joined Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation Board of Trustees in 1994. As Charles C. Gates Society members, Judi and Joe established The Wagner Family Chair in Childhood Diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that has affected several members of their family.

Cille and Ron Williams As honorary chairs of the Campaign, Cille and Ron’s most recent gifts to Children’s Colorado include the Cille and Ron Williams Chair in Executive Leadership, a unique gift to endow Children’s Colorado’s CEO. They also consistently support Children’s Gala, and have included the hospital in their estate plans.

Ron has served on the Children’s Colorado Board of Directors since 1989 and played a pivotal role in the decision to move Children’s Colorado to its current location on the Anschutz Medical Campus. Cille and Ron are members of the Charles C. Gates Society.

Early leadership: Catalyst for change in pediatric medicine

Sandy Wolf Children’s Circle of Care and Charles C. Gates Society member Sandy Wolf of The Melvin and Elaine Wolf Foundation supports the Colorado Institute for Maternal and Fetal Health. The Sandy Wolf Chair in Maternal Fetal Surgery funds the hire of a maternal-fetal surgeon who will help save and heal babies with certain conditions detected during pregnancy. “This is my opportunity to help a mother whose baby is affected by an illness or genetic anomaly. I’ve been through that, and I decided to make this gift because no parent should have to suffer from a devastating illness or loss that we have the knowledge to avoid,” said Sandy.

The spirit of philanthropy Giving generously—whether investments of time, money or wise counsel—make Cille and Ron Williams an important part of our community.

“I think the spirit of helping others drives philanthropy regardless of the amount of money you have,” Ron says. This ethic took root in both Cille and Ron early in life. Each developed philanthropy as a core value over time, witnessing giving in their families when they were young. Cille says, “I always knew about helping others.” They share a value for helping out when help is needed.

“I think that I got a lot of my ethic for philanthropy, or community involvement, over the last 30 years of my working career with Sam Gary,” Ron says, referring to his partner in the Gary-Williams Energy Corporation.

“Being involved with the community was part of our corporate agenda,” says Ron. In addition to Children’s Colorado, they support a host of early childhood initiatives in Colorado and Nebraska.

Children’s issues are particularly meaningful to both Cille and Ron at this point in their lives; they have three children and seven grandchildren.

Ron’s involvement didn’t start with an emotional impulse. He has been on the hospital Board of Directors since 1989, when his close friend Nancy Gary invited him to bring his finance acumen and leadership expertise to the Board. “It was a big process–looking at what we should be in the future and where we should be.” It’s been a theme in his career-looking at an organization; dreaming of what could be; and then making it happen. After the feasibility study examining the costs of a major renovation versus a new hospital, Ron concluded that a new hospital would better serve children and could make Children’s Colorado a national and international name. It was a big proposition, but, Ron thought, “this could happen.”

Moving beyond projections of a possible future involved years of vision, leadership, and hard work.

Ron served as one of the three co-chairs for the Imagine the Miracles Campaign, raising $273 million and transforming Children’s Colorado into a worldclass hospital and irreplaceable community resource.

Cille and Ron gave the first leadership gift to Imagine the Miracles, inspiring giving throughout their community. Now, in their new role as honorary cochairs, Cille and Ron themselves are inspired. Ron says, “Cille and I are excited to serve as the honorary chairs of this Campaign. We have loved our time serving Children’s Colorado over the years and are thrilled about this current opportunity. We realized that building the new hospital was only half the job— now we have to make sure it accomplishes all we dreamed it would.”

Their gift to the new Campaign shows their commitment to great leadership. They are investing in the leadership of Children’s Colorado—not to mention demonstrating great trust in our exceptional leadership—by funding the Cille and Ron Williams Chair in Executive Leadership, a unique gift to endow Children’s Colorado’s CEO. Their role in mobilizing the community and inspiring philanthropy served our community well. “If our efforts drive philanthropy and make things happen, we will have done a good day’s work and we are happy to do it,” Ron said.

Over the last decade, Laura Barton has followed several paths to significant involvement with Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Several of Laura Barton’s close family friends were “heavy users” of the hospital, where their children received excellent care. Her friends’ belief in Children’s Colorado as the best place for their kids impressed Laura. In 2003, though she’d never summited a mountain peak before, Laura challenged herself to ride the Courage Classic with friends Mary and Don Elliman on behalf of their son, Mac. She’s been riding the Courage Classic ever since. Finally, Laura’s daughter Kate interned with the Foundation, providing a window into the leadership of the hospital and Foundation.

Over the past three years Laura has stepped up her investment significantly.

She currently serves as chair of the Foundation Board of Trustees, and is the initial co-chair of Children’s Colorado’s upcoming Campaign, likely to be named Courage is… the Campaign to Transform Children’s Health.

When asked why she has become even more involved with Children’s Colorado, Laura said, “It really is a remarkable place.

Not only is Children’s Colorado a vital community resource, but I believe we are at a unique moment in time. We have several opportunities to do some truly incredible things.”

While Laura may not have foreseen her current dual roles as chair of the Foundation Board of Trustees and Campaign co-chair, she says, “I’ve been fortunate to be a community volunteer for the last twenty years, and I’ve had the opportunity to invest in things that have been important to me. I was really looking for another engagement opportunity where I could contribute my professional skills, and also learn.”

Laura has made a significant personal investment in the Campaign. Her gifts— to the Discovery Fund, the Digestive Health Institute, and to establish both the Barton Family Chair in Bone Marrow Transplant and the Barton-Elliman Chair in Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery—will further the hospital's breakthroughs.

Laura is helping friends, family and community members become familiar with Children’s Colorado, in the same way she herself was introduced to our work and mission.

When asked why a gift—regardless of its size—matters, Laura responded, “We rely on all sizes of gifts all the time to fund our mission. We can’t live without them. For us, the $25 gift is highly, highly valued."

Laura feels that she never stops learning at Children’s Colorado. “I’ve learned a lot about just what we’re capable of doing for children and met some amazing care providers and professionals. I’ve loved that. I learn a lot from my partners— fellow board members and Foundation staff. I so admire their professionalism and the dedication to Children’s Colorado. It’s really humbling too.” Laura believes she has a contribution to make to Children’s Colorado, and specifically, in this Campaign. “I think I can add value by sharing stories about what’s happening at Children’s Colorado, and lead by example by making strategic investments in programs where we can make amazing changes or breakthroughs and build on the incredible care we provide.”

Patient, athlete and fundraiser Big dreams leading the way As a baby, Bryan was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and regularly receives treatment at Children’s Colorado.

This summer, he rode in the Courage Classic.

Bryan rides to encourage others with CF to keep pursuing their passions

Cystic fibrosis (CF) creates serious breathing and digestion problems in those it affects. In addition to treatment at Children’s Colorado, Bryan's regimen includes nine oral medications, two physical treatments, and more than 40 pills per day. Last year, a lung infection caused the partial loss of Bryan’s right lung. Now 14 years old, Bryan’s lung capacity and endurance are less than those of teenagers without CF, but he remains active in hockey, skiing, snowboarding and now cycling.

This summer, Bryan rode more than 150 miles in the Courage Classic. He is fundraising in support of CF research that could help improve treatment for CF patients – including Bryan. Together, he and his family have shared their story with family, friends and colleagues.

Bryan has raised nearly $70,000 and was this year’s overall fundraising leader for the Courage Classic. The money he raised will support ongoing CF research at Children’s Colorado, one of the largest CF treatment centers in the country.

Hannah is an athlete – and she believes Children’s Colorado gave her the confidence and courage to pursue her athletic passions at the elite level.

As a paralympic ski racer and competitive flat water kayaker, Hannah is focused and motivated. “I was 5 when I had my first surgery and 6 when I began skiing,” said Hannah. “My doctors at Children’s Colorado encouraged me, knowing a sport would motivate me for rehab. Over the years, I’ve put my trust in these doctors’ expertise. They preserved my mobility. They taught me to always prepare for what I might do next – and never look back.”

Hannah has visions of competing on the U.S. Paralympic team at the Hannah kayaking on Sloan's Lake Brazil summer games in 2016. “My confidence is absolute,” she says. “It has to be.” It’s something she learned at a young age by watching the demeanor of her doctors at Children’s Colorado, and from her instructors at the Hospital Sports Program.

Hospital experience inspires engagement As longtime Denver residents, Theresa and Jim Berger always had an awareness of Children’s Colorado as a leader for pediatric care.

The Berger's relationship with the hospital became personal 10 years ago when they discovered their newborn son, Jake, had a cyst near his brain. At only 4 months old, Jake had surgery at Children’s Colorado to remove the cyst. The surgery was successful, and today he is a healthy 10-year-old boy.

Theresa and Jim were grateful for the care Jake received and decided to become supporters of Children’s Colorado. In 2003, they joined the Children’s Circle of Care, which recognizes gifts of $10,000 or more, and have continued to support the hospital over the last decade.

In the years following Jake’s treatment, the Bergers processed the difficult experience their family had faced. They wanted to increase their involvement with the hospital, and as their kids grew older and the family schedule became more manageable, they looked for ways to become more engaged.

In addition to their previous gifts, Theresa and Jim wanted to make an investment that would continue to have an impact throughout the future of Children’s Colorado. They chose to make a gift in support of research at the hospital to foster positive outcomes for other families who may face similar challenges as Jake.

“The things they are accomplishing through research are absolutely incredible,” said Theresa. “For anyone who is interested in supporting Children’s Colorado, we encourage you to come down here and see the hospital, see the kids and the staff.

It’s such an inspiring place to feel like you’re a part of.”

Theresa also invests her time as a Children’s Colorado volunteer serving in several different areas of the hospital, directly interacting with patients and staff.“ "I enjoy it so much. I always leave inspired, and it makes me want to give everything I can,” Theresa said.

Theresa and Jim will attend their first Children’s Gala this fall and look forward to celebrating with others who share an interest in supporting pediatric health. They enjoy travel and spending time with their three children, Shari, Sam and Jake. Jim and Theresa are expecting their first grandchild this summer.

Hayley’s Heroes fundraising for rare disorder As a newborn, Hayley was diagnosed with a rare metabolic disorder called Homocystinuria (HCU).

Homocysteine builds up in the blood stream and can cause deadly blood clots, strokes, heart attacks, learning delays and dislocated eye lenses. Protein is toxic to Hayley’s body and acts much like a poison.

Hayley is currently on a restrictive diet consisting of small amounts of fruits and vegetables, medically manufactured food, medical formula and medicine. She has her blood drawn every three to four weeks to monitor her homocysteine levels, but her symptoms are ever-present.

On Hayley’s 1st birthday, the Thomas family started Hayley’s Heroes Homocystinuria Research Fund through Team Children’s Colorado to support better treatments and a cure for her disease.

The Children’s Hospital Colorado Association of Volunteers hosted a successful Wine Event that raised $244,000 for Children’s Colorado. Four hundred attendees enjoyed an evening of wine tasting and food pairings, along with a live and silent auction for rare wines and travel destinations. "Laughter and tears filled the room as Savannah Perry and Erik Hall recalled their daughter's treatment with Dr. Crombleholme and his team. We are thrilled that this event helps change lives in our community,” said Jean Bitzer, event co-chair.

Courage Classic raises funds and awareness

More than 2,000 cyclists rode 150 miles and five mountain passes in this summer’s Courage Classic bicycle tour. Riders from more than 141 teams helped raise funds and awareness to benefit Children’s Colorado.

The preliminary total raised by the date of the tour was $2.24 million. Fundraising continues until August 31, when final gifts will be tallied. Chris Hugget, a Denver resident and 7-yearparticipant, is one of many people inspired by Team Courage.
