The search for knowledge is essential for improving the care Children’s Hospital Colorado provides. Research gives physicians and scientists the ability to develop new preventions, treatments and cures for children with life-altering illnesses and injuries.

Children’s Hospital Colorado’s investigators are contributing to a greater understanding of pediatrics – work that is resonating with their colleagues, the larger scientific community, and is impacting the lives of patients and families. Research ranges from improving treatments for childhood leukemia, diabetes and cystic fibrosis, to developing a new artificial heart pump for kids with only one ventricle.

Increasingly, gifts from a broad base of passionate donors, along with thoughtful long-term management of these community investments, drive our pursuit of research to find new ways of caring for kids.

Giving to discovery Dear friends, Children’s Hospital Colorado is an internationally-recognized leader in research to discover new evidence-based ways of preventing, curing and treating childhood illnesses and trauma. Our future is driven by a desire to give children of all ages, all across the globe, the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Philanthropic investments that support the discovery of these breakthroughs are often the decisive factor for success. Whether these gifts create endowments that provide stable, secure funding for proven researchers, or whether gifts support the hospital’s Research Institute, creating an environment where new discoveries and innovative treatments can blossom, they are all critical.

Several current and former board members have each made recent gifts to establish Discovery Funds for the purpose of furthering research that can lead to new and novel ways of treating children. Discovery Funds give a source of perpetual income to programs and investigators at the discretion of Children’s Colorado’s leadership to help further build the body of scientific knowledge that can lead to better treatments and cures.

Our affiliation with the University of Colorado School of Medicine is one of our great strengths. This collaboration allows scientists to work alongside clinicians in a wide range of pediatric specialties, ultimately bringing new discoveries to the bedsides of sick children.

Collaborative research efforts at Children’s Colorado and on the Anschutz Medical Campus help make breakthroughs in new treatments and the most promising cures a reality. As a result, the quality of life for children is improved, illness and harm are prevented, and children’s lives are saved.

Research worthy of top awards

Recent grants awarded to Children’s Colorado’s researchers hold the promise of transformative breakthroughs.

In 2013, the University of Colorado Department of Pediatrics, whose doctors practice at Children's Colorado, was awarded grants that totaled more than $43 million by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), ranking first in the country for NIH funding. Children’s Colorado’s own Dr. Ron Sokol is the country's most highlyfunded pediatric investigator.

Additionally, hospital physician-scientists involved with the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, an effort that includes universities around the state, six affiliated hospitals and health care organizations, and multiple community organizations, received a $48.4 million, five-year NIH grant in 2013. The grant will help accelerate the translation of laboratory discoveries into clinical treatments.

Donors support discovery

Philanthropy also helps to further investigation into new and novel theories that large government grants are less likely to support.

Donors like Foundation Board Chair Laura Barton, former Board Vice-Chair John Ikard and his wife, Karen, and former hospital Board Chair Cathey Finlon and her husband Richard, have made recent gifts to establish Discovery Funds.

Discovery Funds further research that can lead to new and novel ways of treating children by giving a source of perpetual income, at the discretion of Children’s Colorado’s leadership, to programs and investigators who are working to find better treatments and cures.

Other donors make gifts in support of individual researchers. Chris and Tara Hummel, from Pennsylvania, have a son

diagnosed with an inherited metabolic disease called homocystinuria. Their William R. Hummel Homocystinuria Research Fund, has almost exclusively supported Dr. Kenneth Mclean’s work to understand the pathogenesis of this disease in children. Thanks to their support, he is making progress toward better treatments.

Similarly, Michael and Erin Cole, whose daughter, Rachel, had a rare heart condition, are donors from Illinois who support the work of Dr. Bettina Cuneo.

Dr. Cuneo treats severe heart arrhythmias in children, and the Coles' gift supports fetal heart rate monitors for pregnant mothers that can help detect severe arrhythmias before their infants are born.

Research at Children’s Colorado is changing the future for children in our region, and because we share what we learn, kids across the nation and globe. Research grants take us far – but community support is the key to a healthier future for all children.

Philanthropy as a bridge to breakthroughs

Philanthropy to supplement large government and outside agency grants is critical for many reasons, including the fact that it allows investigators to continue their research between funding cycles.

Researchers who were awarded internal investments have, in turn, received more than $45 million in additional peerreviewed, competitive funding as a result of philanthropic and internal grants – a return on investment of more than five to one.

Through unexpected journeys, Dr. Di Paola and his team discovered the cause of a rare disease by finding a gene mutation that scientists had never seen before.

Meet Isabella Isabella was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 7.

The following year, an endoscopy revealed that she also had celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine triggered by eating gluten.

Isabella’s mom, Claudia, noticed her daughter’s symptoms early on. Claudia saw that Isabella was using the bathroom a lot, and seemed excessively thirsty.

“It’s tough, but she knows her body pretty well,” said Claudia. “She is in complete control of her diabetes and knows when she’s feeling low.”

“I woke up in the middle of the night and just knew we were dealing with something serious,” said Claudia.

Isabella became a Children’s Colorado ambassador for the opportunity to fundraise and to teach other kids how to manage and deal with diabetes and celiac disease. “I can let them know they’re not alone,” said Isabella.

She researched the usual diabetes symptoms – unusual thirst, multiple trips to the bathroom, and tremulous, sweet breath. The next day at the pediatrician’s office, caregivers measured Isabella’s blood glucose level. A normal blood glucose level for a child is between 60 and 100. Isabella’s blood sugar measured 350.

“We were fortunate that Isabella didn’t have serious side effects before her diagnosis,” said Claudia, who decided her daughter should be treated at Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Claudia describes her daughter as sweet, smart, artsy, perceptive and bubbly.

Isabella is a well-spoken, confident 15-year-old with big plans for the future.

She wants to be a fashion buyer and travel the world, bringing back styles from China, France, Italy and beyond.

For now, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and going skiing. She also joined her high school’s tennis team.

Isabella appreciated that caregivers at Children’s Colorado informed their patients – the children – as well as parents about treatment. “They showed me what I needed to do to take control of my health and gave me a better understanding of how to eat,” said Isabella. “They showed that they care.”

Isabella has been in control of her own health since age 10. “Diabetes is a hassle, but manageable,” said Isabella. She is on an insulin pump and she tests her blood sugar multiple times per day.

The Ponzio Family Endowed Chair in Neurology Research In 2013, the Ponzio family generously endowed a chair in neurology research. Children’s Colorado was fortunate to have Dr. Tim Benke, Director for research in the Neuroscience Institute.

As chairholder, Dr. Benke will bolster the pediatric neurology research program at Children’s Colorado. The Institute is part of NeuroNEXT, a national, multi-center National Institutes of Health-funded

consortium of clinical trials organized to find cures for rare neurological diseases, and this chair will play a key role in Children’s Colorado’s participation in national clinical trials.

Led by Dr. Frederick J. Suchy, chief research officer, professor of Pediatrics, and associate dean for child health research at University of Colorado School of Medicine, the Institute supports all aspects of research – from basic laboratory studies to improved clinical care at a child’s bedside.

Dr. Nick Foreman wants to cure pediatric brain tumors, and he is supported by a community with personal stories of loss and hope. Gifts generated by two families in particular have already transformed pediatric neuro-oncology and saved lives.

Joan Slaughter and her husband, Steven Adams, became philanthropists for Dr. Foreman’s work after losing their daughter, Morgan, to a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor when she was 6 years old. They realized through this experience that pediatric neuro-oncology research was significantly underfunded.

Grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) were not targeting brain tumors, which are one of the deadliest cancers and which dramatically impact quality of life for the children who survive. They created the Morgan Adams Foundation to fund pediatric neuro-oncology research, and specifically, to develop Dr. Nick Foreman’s research lab and infrastructure.

“Philanthropy is an imperative. It makes a difference in how children are treated,” says Joan.

In addition to building the neurooncology research enterprise at Children’s Hospital Colorado, the Morgan Adams Foundation has invested in great ideas from promising researchers. One of the greatest challenges for early-career investigators is securing initial funding to support their hypotheses; bigger grants

usually go to established physicianscientists. The return on investment for a great idea, however, is remarkable.

“New idea generation is the greatest need, and where our philanthropy has been most effective,” Joan says. “We made a $40,000 investment in a young researcher’s work recently, which resulted in a $1.2 million NIH grant.”

Stephanie and Matt Seebaum, who also suffered a momentous personal loss, founded the Tanner Seebaum Foundation in part because they were inspired by the Morgan Adams Foundation, also support Dr. Foreman’s research.

Stephanie and Matt’s son, Tanner, was diagnosed with a brain tumor called ependymoma before he turned 2 years old. Tanner grew into a giving, positive young man despite the occurrence of three tumors before age 8, and many rounds of chemotherapy and radiation.

When he learned about a new and incurable tumor on his brain stem at age 15, Tanner continued to pursue his dreams, including becoming a wellrespected DJ, until he passed away at age 16 in July 2013.

During this journey, the Seebaum family and their friends and community decided to raise money to support Dr. Foreman and his team in their pursuit of novel treatments for hard-to-treat cancers.

Their efforts helped create the Tanner Seebaum and Zachary Tschetter Chair in Neuro-Oncology, held by Dr. Foreman, and an endowed fund to further research into ependymoma and related tumors.

“We felt it was important to fund research in the type of tumor Tanner had, because there is not yet a cure. We want to give hope for a cure to other kids,” says

Stephanie. Their fundraising, and Dr. Foreman’s clinical care and research, continues.

Children's Colorado has the largest neuro-oncology tumor bank in the US, funded by the Morgan Adams Foundation.

As home to world-renowned physicianscientists like Dr. Foreman, Children's Colorado is one of the best places to invest resources that can immediately impact the care brain tumor patients receive.

Dr. Foreman and his team would like to position Children’s Colorado as a national

research center in rapid trials for currently incurable or recurrent brain tumors. Such a center does not yet exist, and current efforts are scattered across pediatric research centers. Private philanthropic investment can help fund an infrastructure to match the team’s vision, ambition, and potential. In the meantime, the families behind the Morgan Adams and Tanner Seebaum foundations have become friends and allies of Dr. Foreman and his team.

“It’s really a pleasure to support him,” Matt says.

“We want to improve the longterm quality of life for the kids we’re treating today.”

Research

underway at Children’s Colorado For several years, area Hyundai dealers have supported innovative pediatric cancer researchers at Children’s Hospital Colorado by contributing grant funding through a competitive awards program called Hyundai Hope on Wheels.

Dr. Christopher Porter is a pediatric hematologist and oncologist, as well as an early-career researcher, who has received Hyundai awards in both 2011 and 2013. Support from the latest $250,000 Hyundai Hope on Wheels grant will fund Dr. Porter’s work to combat drug resistance in certain types of leukemia.

Dr. Porter, who came to Children’s Colorado in 2007, splits his time between the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the laboratory he now runs.

“Funding from Hyundai Hope on Wheels will allow us to study a gene we found that contributes to drug resistance in leukemia cells,” says Dr. Porter, who used early Hyundai funding to lay the groundwork for his current research. “In addition to understanding the normal function of this gene, we will learn its role in the development of leukemia and the disease’s response to therapy. These studies will inform clinical trials.”

Hyundai Hope on Wheels is a nonprofit organization that provides grants to young investigators who are pursuing lifesaving research and innovative treatments for the cancer. Primary funding for Hyundai Hope on Wheels comes from Hyundai Motor America and its more than 800 U.S. dealers.

Children’s Colorado physician-scientists are creating a better understanding of diseases that affect children to develop new ways of diagnosing, treating and curing children. Here are examples of current research on the Anschutz Medical Campus.

Breathing Institute

Neurosciences Institute

Breathing Institute investigators are using DNA diagnostic techniques to study microbes that live in our mouths, lungs, gut and skin to understand whether this “microbiome” is associated with breathing conditions and determine whether treatments with prebiotics, probiotics or antimicrobials may benefit a wide variety of pediatric lung conditions.

Neurosurgeons, including neuro-oncology specialists, focus on bringing bedside clinical information into the laboratory and translating lab data into advances in therapy for children. Research includes effective therapy of multiple brain tumors, the optimal timing to give medication during shunt and spine surgeries, and clinical outcomes following surgery at the junction of the head and neck.

Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders

Oncology researchers have identified genes that cancers target, and they are working to develop potential new therapeutic strategies for hematologic malignancies and glioblastoma.

Digestive Health Institute

A unique US population-based celiac disease study has shown a much higher prevalence of the condition than previously described. Researchers have identified novel blood tests for celiac disease and the relationship of celiac disease with diabetes.

Heart Institute

The Heart Institute’s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, the only one of its kind in our region, is actively developing research in: • Nutrition for critically ill patients • Innovative monitoring technologies •M anagement of low cardiac output and tissue perfusion disorders •Q uality improvement, safety and clinical effectiveness

Orthopedics Institute

The Miller Basic Science Laboratory is focused on the genetics of spinal deformity and growth plate injury. Most recently, they’ve discovered rare genetic variations in families with scoliosis from previously-unknown causes, in particular those with more severe spine deformities.

A study is also underway to investigate the use of stem cells as a therapy for growth plate injury recovery.

Physician-scientists throughout our Institute are developing the basic and clinical knowledge we need to create new medicines, devices, diagnostic approaches and other health care innovations that change, and save, children’s lives.

Funds raised since the inception of Children’s Classic at Sanctuary have furthered our research enterprise, making a real difference for kids and their families facing a tough diagnosis.

A tradition of funding child health research Gail and Dave Liniger demonstrate the values of foresight, land and community stewardship, and deep compassion. Children’s Hospital Colorado is lucky to have them as steadfast longtime supporters. In fact, for more than 17 consecutive years, the Linigers have helped to raise more than $5.3 million for research at Children’s Colorado through their beautiful Sanctuary Golf Course.

Children’s Hospital Colorado Research Institute has impacted children and families – not just in Colorado, but worldwide.

The Sanctuary course was created as a way to preserve a fragile mountain ecosystem, and play is limited to members and select events, with a focus on philanthropic events. The Linigers’ guiding philosophy of community stewardship has nurtured Children’s Colorado’s environment of discovery.
