RIDER July 20-22
Rules of the Road
COURAGE CLASSIC 2013 July 20-22
The Courage Classic is conducted on open roads with vehicular traffic. Roads include both marked and unmarked hazards. Though we strive to make the ride as safe as possible, always remember that safety is in your own hands and ride by these rules: • Wear a helmet at all times – NO EXCEPTIONS • Carry ID and relevant medical information • Do not wear headphones or earbuds • Rules of the road apply; cyclists have the same duties and rights as drivers of other vehicles • Ride single file where necessary, maximum of two abreast when conditions allow; do not impede traffic • Ride as far right as reasonable • Obey all traffic lights, signs, and regulations • Pass on the left only, announce “passing” or “hello” or “on your left”. No passing on double yellow. • Use hand signals to indicate road hazards, stopping, slowing, right, and left turns
COURAGE CLASSIC 2013
• Prepare properly: nutrition, hydration, training, and sudden changes in weather conditions
2
• Respect others: riders, volunteers, host communities, motorists, pedestrians, law enforcement, and the environment Riding safely and considerately is vital to your enjoyment and the safety of other riders. The future of cycling events in Colorado depends on your cooperation with the rules above. We reserve the right to close the course at any time due to weather or other emergencies. If you are riding with children, please review our helmet and sag wagon information.

Tour Communication Line: 720-777-7499 Should someone need to reach you during the tour, they can leave a message on the Tour Communication Line: 720-777-7499. We will monitor this number frequently throughout the tour and will post messages at the Tour Information Center (see below for locations and times).
plan) and your shower pass (if you’re camping). Please wear it for the duration of the tour. In addition to your rider wristband, you will receive a number that you are required to wear on your helmet and bike at the tour. In case of emergency, we will be able to match your rider wristband number and your bike number. Or, if you use our sag wagon service, your bike will be easier to identify.
Tour Information Center and Merchandise Booth You’ll find the volunteer-staffed Tour Information Center near the Start/Finish Line in Burning Stones Plaza each day. If you missed Friday’s volunteer registration, check in at the Tour Information Center. COURAGE CLASSIC 2013
Sag Wagons
4
If you (and your bike) need a lift up a hill, to the next aid station, or to the daily finish, we will have several sag wagons on the course each day to take you there. Sag wagons are large vans with bike racks on the top and a sag wagon sign in the windshield. Sag wagons pick up riders from the road (rather than a bike path). To catch a sag wagon, find a safe spot to pull your bike to the side of the road, then flag down the first sag driver you see – if they do not have space, they may ask you to wait for the next sag wagon. Your patience is appreciated: cyclists with trailers and tandem bikes may have a longer wait for a sag wagon due to space limitations. If you are riding with a child who needs a car seat, you will be required to wait for our special sag van outfitted to accommodate children.
The bottom of Vail Pass has a very high volume of need for sag wagons. Sag wagons will not take riders directly to Copper from bottom of Vail Pass – they can only take riders to Black Lakes aid station at the top of Vail Pass. From that location, riders can either ride back via the bike path, or wait for another sag wagon to take them to Copper Mountain Resort.
Bicycle Service To help riders with bike repairs, mechanics from sponsoring bike shops are available at the Start Line/Finish Line and aid stations along the course. Mechanics supply inexpensive parts and labor for free. Cyclists can pay for more expensive parts at the end of each day. Be sure to thank your mechanic for supporting Children’s Hospital Colorado!
Medical Service Medical volunteers are available at each aid station, along the route as biking/motor Medics (look for the red Medic jerseys/ t-shirts) and at the Finish Line. They are equipped with first-aid items and are in contact with EMS for more severe injuries. If a rider needs medical attention, please use your cell phone to call Medical Supervisor, Jason Kotas, (303) 746-5583. In a life threatening emergency call 911, then notify Jason Kotas.
Aid Stations Aid stations and water stops are located throughout the route. Check your route map for exact locations. Stop to rest or use porta-potties, get a snack and refill your water bottles. Most Aid Stations are staffed by volunteers and will have food, drinks, bathrooms, medical and mechanical support. Please keep your bike off the side of the road when stopping.
