Sandra, Cynthia, and Sarah, are three siblings that

are living with Type 2 Neurofibromatosis (NF2), a genetic disorder that causes tumor growth throughout the nervous system. In 2008, when tumors began to aect their hearing, vision, and balance, their family sought the help of John Slopis, M.D., a professor of Neuro-Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center and specialist in the treatment of NF. Since that time, twins Sandra and Sarah, and younger sister Cynthia, have undergone surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments to combat the tumors.

At home in Pasadena, Texas, the family tries to live life as normally as possible. Their parents encourage the girls to creatively express themselves through art and music.

Sandra, 15, is a self-taught musician who enjoys drawing and painting, but really loves the more sculptural arts.

Cynthia, 13, says art became a means of self-expression during treatment, and it has brought her closer to her older sisters. She loves drawing and painting animals with a colorful and whimsical style all her own.

Sarah, 15, loves the creative process, drawing and piecing the elements of a scene together. She says that art is like life, in that no one really knows exactly how things are going to turn out, and she loves experimenting as she goes.

During the COVID-19 restrictions that prevent them from attending art sessions at the main hospital, the girls have continued to create art from home for MD Anderson's Children's Art Project. Some of their art 2 inspired the Nutcracker Suite of resin ornaments featured in this catalog.
