In early 2018, she was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma, a cancer whose initial treatment often results in extended periods of hospitalization to manage the side effects of the aggressive treatment protocol. Lara’s life was turned upside down very quickly. At her first visit to MD Anderson's Child & Adolescent Center, Lara joined our Children’s Art Project activities and felt at ease. “I don’t know what we would have done if it hadn’t been for art,” Lara’s mother, Mai, said of their long stays at the Children’s Cancer Hospital.

Fighting cancer isn’t easy, but finding ways to bring normal activities to Lara’s days made a huge difference in her experience. This summer at Camp Star Trails for pediatric oncology patients, she made lots of friends and lots of art. Now cancer-free, Lara says, “There’s always hope, even when it feels like there’s none.”
