MOVING FORWARD 2016 STEWARDSHIP REPORT

Dear friends, The start of each new year is always an opportunity for me to evaluate the previous year and to look ahead, setting new goals and challenges for myself and the organization. I think back on the milestones we have reached together and brainstorm ways we can move forward to break the cycle of child abuse and help even more children. Children like Edgar and his brother‌ At just six years old, Edgar came to school with bruises on his arms, legs and neck. When his teacher asked him about them, he said his mother hit him with a belt. Edgar’s mother, a victim of domestic violence and human trafficking, could not provide a safe home for him or his one-year-old brother. The boys were taken into the care of Child Protective Services, and will now spend a portion of their childhood navigating unfamiliar places and confusing circumstances. Edgar and his brother need someone to speak up for them and help them move forward to a permanent home where they can thrive.

In 2016, 751 advocate volunteers gave over 55,027 hours of their time to ensure that 2,193 of Houston’s abused and neglected children were not lost in an overburdened child welfare system. I am overwhelmed with gratitude as I think about each individual life that is changed for the better. It is because of so many dedicated people that the children we help will be able to take steps toward accomplishing their own goals. Goals like graduating from high school, having healthy families of their own or just being able to have a childhood. All because they had an advocate by their side.

There are still thousands of children in the Houston area who need us. This year, we hope to give a voice to at least 2,350 of them. With your help, we will raise more dollars and train more volunteers to help us move forward, and give a bright and hopeful future to these children.
