2017 STEWARDSHIP REPORT
Along with his six siblings, fourmonth-old Andrew was found living in deplorable, unsafe conditions. Because of complications at birth, he required specialized care that his parents were not able to fulfill. Later, his siblings revealed they had been sexually abused. Camille & Allison, court appointed advocates, are working together on the case to ensure each child receives the care they need. They stay in regular contact with Andrew’s physicians and therapists, advocating for the best possible care. Andrew’s health continues to improve
and now there is hope that he will grow up to be a healthy little boy.
2017 was a year all of Houston will remember for years to come. We saw snow, a World Series championship and witnessed a 1,000-year flood with Hurricane Harvey. Though our city saw a lot of tragedy, we also saw a tremendous amount of hope. The same is true for so many of the children and families that were helped by Child Advocates. Last year, 825 active volunteers gave thousands of hours to serve more than 2,200 children. Our court appointed advocates read thousands of pages of case files and traveled countless miles. They gave even more hugs and bright smiles to help Houston’s littlest victims navigate the foster care system and find homes where they can thrive. Throughout these pages, you will read just a few of our children’s stories and see the profound impact our volunteers made in their lives. The hope we shared in 2017 would not have been possible without your support and generosity. Every dollar raised, every new volunteer trained and every child helped was made possible by individuals who believe in this work. The Child Advocates family continues to believe in our mission of speaking up for Houston’s abused and neglected children. Our organization offers hope to children who need us the most and, ultimately, we are breaking the vicious cycle of child abuse one child at a time. It has been amazing to see. Each new year will surely present its own challenges, but I am confident that together we can give a voice to the many children in Houston who need us. With continued hope,

Nine-year-old Sasha was sexually abused by her father. Her life is filled with chaos and frustration, as she is wheelchairbound and nonverbal. She suffers from seizures and pulls her hair out. But now she has her advocate, Laura. Laura combed through medical records and spent time talking with doctors and therapists to understand Sasha’s medical and psychological needs. When Sasha was given Christmas gifts that weren’t appropriate for her, Laura gave Sasha a teddy bear instead that helps calm

In foster care for just two short months, six-year-old Jason lived in two different homes and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. His parents neglected to care for him and his five siblings.
When Patrick and Christine were appointed to Jason’s case, they visited him in each placement. They continue to follow up with doctors and teachers to make sure every child’s needs are met. Jason is prone to depression and is at risk of hurting himself. Patrick takes the time to cheer Jason up, helps him with jigsaw puzzles and replaces the batteries on his toys. He has given Jason a friend

Since 1984, Child Advocates has spoken up for over 25,000 children in Harris Country. More than 5,500 volunteers from the community have dedicated their time as court appointed advocates. On behalf of the 2,227 children who were given a voice in 2017, thank you for your commitment to our mission.
